Android tablets need work--alot of work...

Just returned from Xmas shopping and thought I was going to get some tablets for family members but found them to be frustratingly slow when compared to the iPad--which is what people are going to do, even though they shouldn't, they're going to. Google did announced that Android <2.2 is simply not ready for tablets and I couldn't agree more.
I have an iPad at home and the cheapest iPad competes successfully with the best tablets Android has, the Dell Streak and Samsung tab. Those tablets are <$600, so's the iPad. Unless there's a specific reason why you'd rather use an Android tablet when the screen is smaller and the whole tablet is overall slower, the choice is easily iPad.
I heard a shopper try to use one and comment how slow Android is. I showed him my Evo to tell him that Android's still in progress, it'll get faster. Unless you don't mind paying for $300 or less for frustration, (inexpensive) Android tablets are just not ready. I hear Honeycomb will have a tabler-optimized system.

Couldn't agree more. The galaxy tab is an embarrassment. I tried using one in a store the other day and got 3 force closes in ten minutes, plus a jerky UI and ****house resolution.

I liked the Tab a lot, thought it was really great. Didn't have any issues with it when I played it with it. But I agree to an extent. Problem is, most Android tablets are made poorly. Archos is about the only one that has made decent tablets aside from Dell and Samsung. It could be better though, I'll say that. Right now Android is suited for mobile phones. For a good reason, it's a phone OS.

More reason to look forward to honeycomb. The flagship Google tablet should set the standard for android tablets.

Yes! And they're going to kick butt. Apple optimized the iPhone's OS for three years before they brought out the iPad. Android is only about three years old, isn't it? I just hope that the crappy tablets out there now haven't damaged Android's rep.
Or Google should've just thrown ChromeOS on tablets. Chrome is basically what I use on my Ubuntu powered netbook. I rarely see the desktop anymore.

I have had a galaxy tab for about 27 days..I also have an ipad that i've had for awhile....I like the tab but it's going back tomarrow...Had 3 and all 3 had dead pixels..I think the screen is better than ipad and using the apps and playing with OS is peppy like my Vibrant but start browsing and it becomes sluggish...Some sites are much worst than others...The stock browser is by far the slowest thing ever..dolphin hd is better but still sluggish..I tried all browsers and disabling flash/plugins and different settings ...No matter what i try browsing is not smooth like my ipad...I hoped a fix came out or a ROM that would fix the laggy browsing but nothing yet....I really like the tab because of A: Android OS vs the boring basic ios4 and B: The screen is better than my ipad...While the ipad screen is very nice the tab is better and once samoled starts coming on them ohhh my!

Google had plenty of time to make the OS smooth, 2.3 is a big fail. I don't know what google has given to people but everyone believes that android will be the next big thing. Seems like we will never reach the promised land.
People had so much expectations about gingerbread, new UI, gpu accelerated graphics, the smoothness, new integration with social networking... Instead you get a 2.3 with a new keyboard and few little things people don't care.
After 2 yrs and some the OS still is not smooth, it lacks in visual appearance, the apps are crap. I don't know how much longer i'll stay with this OS. Everytime i get a new phone is always read the stickies, flash new roms rinse and repeat. I am so tired of this, i don't know how long is going to stay like this but is like google doesn't give two ****s about it.
I bought an ipad this past weekend, jailbroke it, and started installing apps and end of story. I have games that i have fun playing with and apps that doesn't look like crap. If iphone had 3g in tmobile i'd consider getting an iphone.

It seems like you're the type that just wants their computer to work..[period]. This is not a criticism, you must just not be interested in hacking and modding your phone and why should you have to? There are so many choices out there, you don't have to use an Android phone--unless you were forced into using one.
Some of the apps are crap and some are are not but the choice is yours. The good apps filter to the top and bad ones never surface. I only choose apps that are four stars or better so my apps aren't crap--not to me at least. Don't you think that sort of freedom is nice? I do!
I, for one am glad that Google doesn't give two-****s about it ( I think they do ), it's an open source project and what you do with "your" phone is up to "you". We've never had this sort of freedom and I'm grateful we finally have it. But you don't have to try new ROMs or read any stickies if you don't enjoy it. I know Android phone users who have absolutely no plans to ever root their phone because they're happy with the way the carrier set it up for them--great!

Wow, well said mate, agreed except for Microsoft phones (WinMo), you can also buy them with the idea of tweaking, hacking, configuring everything to your liking, etc. in mind, unlike blackberry and apple.

Oh? I didn't know that about WinMO. I think that to a point you can hack and mod anything you want. I've seen OS 7 running on an iPhone and thought that was impressive but have no idea if that's difficult or not. But that's not Apple's corporate philosophy where as AOSP, by definition will lends itself to extensive modification and is almost encouraged--man, I've dreamed of this.

Android is pretty big right now and still growing.

The UI has different elements from previous versions, but this isn't the first time this happened. This happens with other platforms all the time. Windows Phone 7 for not having Copy and paste off the bat, or any decent homebrew support. Apple with the lack of multitasking, or Blackberry with something actually new and specs that can rival current Android phones!

It's not just google mind you, Google can only do so much. If you're gonna blame Google, then you have to blame Qualcomm, Samsung, TI, HTC, etc etc for making the phone and some of the drivers. And I don't know about you, but I didn't flash a new rom every day now. I just get a rom that's best for me, and if it needs updated, I update it. Same thing with stock roms. If Google didn't give 2 ****s about it, then why is Google still supporting Android as much as they are? I like the UI of Android a lot. Easy to customize and change, where as for the longest time in Ios and mostly still now, black background? Windows Phone 7, black background or a different color? For the apps, it's open source. That's what the reviews in the Marketplace are for. I've have good experiences with the apps.

Ios is also completely locked down in terms of development. Iphone 3g is also nothing compared to current Android phones now. An Arm11 v6 cpu, versus say an Arm Cortex a8? About 400-440mhz underclocked from 600mhz or so, versus even the Droid only being clocked at 550mhz, but having a huge advantage of better instruction sets and Adreno gpu? You obviously haven't done much homework either, Tmobile will support Iphone on their network, and there's even unlock codes in Cydia available. All you need to do, setup a plan with Tmobile, and get a Tmobile Sim card for that plan. It might now have the 3g network enabled, but there's your Iphone for you.
I'm not bad mouthing Apple, Iphone, Windows, Microsoft, WP7, or anything like that. But Apple has complete control over the Iphone and Ios(There isn't even an AT&T logo on the Iphone), WP7 is still young so we'll see how it turns out, and Android is still growing.

I would agree that the iPad is much more advanced. But the Galaxy Tab is pretty decent and I actually love the color nook. It is great for what it does...

Once released, Honeycomb should have a positve major impact on new futere Tablets.

I completely disagree. You must not have done your homework well. Right now the best tablets are the tegra tablets. They own the ipad in every way possible and are receiving alot of development. As far as I know there are 4 out now: Toshiba Folio 100, Viewsonic G Tablet, Advent Vega, and the Elocity 7". I'm on the Viewsonic G Tablet, so far the rims developed by our Dev team are 1337! They can play flash, have full market, and are hella fast!

[Q] Port of Garageband app to Xoom ?

Today i was suppose to get a Motorola Xoom but after seeing the garageband app for the ipad 2 im reeling..... first off i'm a musician so when something like garageband comes out im all geeked up...& disappointed at the same time because im a android junkie and wish that someone can port it or create the equivalent for android. CAN ANYONE PORT GARAGEBAND!!! to the Xoom

Sounds like you should just go buy an iPad.

'Port' would be the wrong term here...or for any iOS app. 'Clone' would be better...and then you can bet Old Man Steve would be around the corner with a patent or trademark lawsuit.

I second the motion for a clone of this app, I played with it at Verizon while waiting for my Xoom. I hate CRAPPLE and would never waste my money on their junk, but this was a fun app.

I'm really interested in this also and feel the same way as the OP. Im looking to buy the transformer or the xoom but im have second thoughts because of GarageBand. I love Honeycomb more than iOS and I really don't want to get an ipad because of 1 app (nothing else lures me to the ipad) but do you think there's ever going to be an equivalent to GarageBand?
I'm guessing Garageband-esque apps are not optimal for phones so nobody has really invested much into it b4 honeycomb came out, but do you think big companies like Avid and Sony or FLStudio invest in an app? Those are professional level companies and therefore their products are really expensive, but I don't see any other companies going into this market.
If you guys have any other insight or ideas let me know, this is a real killer. I would love something simple and intuitive exactly like GarageBand to have around with my tab and dabble ideas in. Sometimes I feel like the reason for Ipads success is because of the creative apps it has and hopefully the honeycomb devs can do the same.

Well, I didn't even know what GarageBand was until a few minutes ago - but there was an app that I played with a year or so ago - but it was limited to 8 tracks to mix with.
Not that it was better than this, or even equivalent, but it's a start.
Otherwise, I would think it would take months to get a piece of software even close to this. Especially since Androids built in Audio Controls are pretty much junk(up to 2.3 at least, so maybe HC has better), so all the EQ adjustments would be incredibly difficult.

I'm extremely intrigued by this likewise and feel indistinguishable route from the OP. Im hoping to purchase the transformer or the xoom yet im have apprehensions in view of GarageBand. All things considered, I didn't comprehend what GarageBand was until a couple of minutes prior - however there was an application that I played with a year or so back - yet it was restricted to 8 tracks to blend with.

Else, I would figure it would take a very long time to get a bit of programming even near this. Particularly since Androids worked in Audio Controls are practically junk(up to 2.3 at any rate, so perhaps HC has better), so all the EQ alterations would be fantastically troublesome.

[Q] WebOS dual boot on Android devices

I have always liked WebOS. Since the first Pre came out I've always wanted to purchase a WebOS device but I knew Android and iOS have a much bigger audience and therefor end up being the better operating systems. But once I was finally able to buy my Touchpad shorly after the fire sale WebOS proved to be even better than I had ever expected. WebOS has always run perfectly smooth for me and I always use WebOS instead of Cyanogenmod other than the fact that Android has a much much larger App Market. I have no idea why WebOS started getting such a horrible reputation, but I'll stop my whining.
I'm hoping that there is someone out there that feels the same way that I do about WebOS and, now that WebOS is going to be open source, will try to DUAL BOOT WebOS and Android on regularly Android based devices. I know nothing about writing code for any platform and, as much as I would like to, I don't really have the time to even figure out where to start learning.
Does anyone know what it would take for it to be possible to run WebOS on a device like the Motorola Atrix?

I haven't done much low level dev, but would love to dive in on a project like this.

I also would love to see this happen now that WebOS is open source. I can see myself abandoning Android all together some day (years from now), since, honestly, WebOS seems better in many regards. It's just amazing..
I've been reading about Android UI lagginess issues from various Google Plus posts and it seems to me that ICS isn't going to be our savior in terms of smoothness improvements. I wish the Android team would put more effort into making Android as smooth as.. every competitior.. but it seems like they're not. UI smoothness is a huge factor for me. It's frustrating when the simplest of animations stutter or scrolling doesn't react as expected. It shouldn't be that way.
WebOS seems ultra polished. I can't wait.

Interesting idea. I'd definitely be interested in seeing how it would run on other devices. I had a palm pre for quite a while and, while I like the phone/OS, the hardware was just terribly constructed and was constantly in for repair.

I've had two pre pluses, first one dropped in a toilet, second one stated to get ether dreaded oreo effect. And the pre two all on Verizon. I absolutely loved it. But the horrible reputation comes from not the software but from the horrible hardware. I told myself constantly it wasn't do bad, but it was. And also from mismanagement both at palm and HP. When they announced the veer pre three and touchpad in February (holy hell a lot had happened this year) and said that any phone before the pre two will not get updated to webos 2.0, just pissed off the whole community. And that's after saying that three phones would. About the only thing HP did right was embracing the homebrew community.
All that being said, I would have my thunderbolt's screen replaced to get webos running on it. I honestly believe that it would turn most any phone into a world beater.

Just bought a palm pre 2 unlocked gsm from ebay us and shipped to Italy
played half a day with 2.1 and is very pretty, now is updating to 2.2.4, hope to see something cool!

Beware of the 2.2.4 update for the unlocked Pre2. I've had a total of 4 of these devices between myself and my wife and they've all suffered the same idiosyncrasy. For some unknown reason, after about a week of normal usage the sound for alerts vanishes requiring a soft reset. It doesn't matter if they have preware or any overclocking, a stock 2.2.4 has done this. It may be a minor irritation for some but not hearing an alert for an important email is a big thing to me.
Unless you're using your Pre2 for message sharing with a Touchpad, I strongly recommend keeping it at 2.1 until the guys at webosinternals figure out if there's a patch for this. I've jumped ship to Windows Phone 7.5 but I still keep an eye on the happenings at webOS because I love the UI. I still find myself swiping at my phone and feeling like an idiot.

The bad thing is that in 2.1 the google account sync wasnt working well, in 2.2.4 is flawless (as can i see by now).
The pre2 is my secondary phone, so i do not need it 365days a year but only when i go out for work.

I was one of the lucky firesale TP buyers and love the thing. I have installed CM9 on it so I could get some apps like Netflix but webOS is a beautiful thing.

I just received my Touchpad and rooted it to dual boot. I'm typing this from the Android side now, but I'm impressed with WebOS. I've worked on several Android tablets, but this is my first WebOS toy. Wish there were more apps, but what a nice screen!

I've noticed that even the hard-core Android fans love webOS once they get to know it. The sad fact is that even with HP's mishandling (I'm really trying to be civil), i don't see how webOS could have survived. The lack of apps was a mortal wound that couldn't be closed. Just look at all the comments and they sound like a scratched record, "loved the UI but needed this app or that so I loaded CM9. But use webOS most of the time". UGHHH! End of rant.

I really hope that the opensourcing can give webos a second chance.
As an android fan i must admit, android can learn very much from webos... in te days of the selling of palm, i really hoped google would buy it...

As much as I hate to admit it, I think webOS's fate as a stand-alone OS has been sealed. My honest opinion is that what we know as webOS today will live on as a major redux of Android. It's already showing up in the form of modified Enyo apps on ICS and a modified version of touch-to-share. Being Linux-based will make it easier to incorporate the best features into Android now that the source code is being released. I still follow the threads here and on WebOS Nation because I really miss webOS but the lack of development and sub-par hardware makes it impossible for me continue with it. My work requires certain apps that webOS simply doesn't have and that's such a shame. Us old dinosaurs (yeah, I've been through a mid-life crisis and a heart attack so I qualify) are very resistant to change but there's nothing wrong with keeping up with new technologies.

My pre is retired and used as a media player on webOS 2.1 30% of the time, it works every time lol. It's really showing it's age but I keep it going because I just can't seem to find a capable media player on Android that will pass media metadata to my receiver as well as webOS 2.1
TouchPad is stock and fantastic the way it is, no problems.

I own a HP Pre3 running 2.2.4, bought it on ebay.
I'm using Advanced Device Menu tweaks and some browser tweaks.
Didn't get into developing now, may I try to get into it when I get more time.
What I still miss is a onscreen keyboard. Having that and maybe a few more apps, webOS would be THE KILLER OS.

I just picked up a pair of Veers (one black, one white). Can't wait. They should be here early next week. I get to practice Dogbert's Unlock method and then figure out how to use Impostah to put a profile on them without wiping my Pre 2 so I can test drive them.

I never got into the smart phone thing so I missed out on the pre and pre plus rush. I'm still looking for a pre plus or pre2 but have 2 touchpads. While there are advantages to android with the many apps out there, I continue to operate with webOS on the touchpad. I am a purchasing officer for an export corporation and use my touchpad daily for the business. The thing I don't understand is the common rant from folks who say that their webOS device is useless without android. What apps do you (really) need that are not available within the webOS or preware market? I find that everything I need to operate my business is available within the webOS community. My touchpad allows me to be productive in the field. I do not have android installed on my touchpad. My wife had classicnerd android on hers but that's for the games.
I have had to use a few work arounds for issues like a lack of camera but otherwise, the touchpad performs very well for my business needs. Yes, I could do more with an iPad or another (pure) android tablet but would be required to spend a great deal of cash for a minimal return.
Those of you who really want to be productive, tell me what app you find in android that you can't find a webOS equivalent for. Chances are that you could be surprised.

I love Android. I've been using it for two years now on five different devices and I've been able to watch it grow out of the awkward Gingerbread "teenager" stage into an amazing OS in ICS/Jelly Bean.
But, recently, I bought an iPad. It wasn't my first choice. I actually bought a Nexus 10 first but due to horrible backlight bleed issues and general boredom in the OS (I found Android to be much more uninteresting on the 10 than on my Nexus 4 and 7 for some reason) I returned it and eventually settled upon the iPad. And I'm not going to lie...I absolutely love it. It's ridiculously fast, fluid, sexy, and the screen is calibrated better than that of the Nexus 10. Sure, the homescreen is boring, but I've found I spend little to no time on the homescreen whereas I do much more on my Nexus 4 and 7.
Then my mom bought an iPhone 5. And so the story progresses. I've been playing with it a lot recently. The screen is pretty good, it's as fast as my iPad, the external speakers are perfection, and the general feel of the device is premium. At first I was bothered with the screen size (I still find it awkward in landscape), but I've grown used to it and actually found myself sort of liking the smallness of it (which is something I've always hated in iPhones). After all, I have my iPad for a larger screen.
And now, lastly, I'm getting a Mac pretty soon. I've always loved OS X. That really isn't anything new, to be honest. I'm not a huge fan of Windows and find it to be clunky and bloated after a few months of usage (after a year, none of my Windows computers have been as functional as they were when I first purchased them). So I'm selling my Windows laptop and buying a Mac Mini, something I'm really excited about. And the idea of pure integration between my computer, tablet, and phone sounds...well...mesmerizing. Fascinating. All of those types of adjectives.
So here I am on XDA, hounding around the Galaxy S4 forums, thinking "Well, this phone looks great, but what if I bought an iPhone?" And the fact that I'm thinking that terrifies the geek in me. For the last two years you would be hard pressed to find a bigger Android fanboy than myself. And now I'm considering having all Apple devices (except for the iPad Mini; clearly the Nexus 7 is superior to that overpriced and under-speced junk). Is there anyone here who can persuade me to stick around with Android? Maybe buy a Galaxy device (I have found AOSP to be pretty boring, lately)? I honestly don't really know. But I have an upgrade, and the last thing I want to do is waste it. I'm not a huge fan of shelling out $600 every time I want a new phone and can't upgrade. Anyway, if anyone can help me with this decision, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

My only big thoughts:
1) If you think the iPhone 5 speaker--singular, not plural--is great you must spend the majority of your time in a sound-amplifying box
2) On the OS front, to each his own, but I find Mac OS to be ridiculously quirky.
Honestly, there aren't any phones that that amaze me. For one, I hate the lack of QWERTY devices. Secondly, it's as if every company intentionally falls short with two or three major points on their flagships as if they couldn't comprehend that they're lacking.
I'm not sure how much fun a geek is going to have going the the Apple darkside, but whatever works.

I believe the iPhone 5 has two speakers. Or at least it looks like it does. And, of course, the sound isn't amazing. But for a phone it's very, very good.
I'm personally not a fan of QWERTY phones, but I don't understand why many aren't made anymore considering there definitely is a market for them.
And that's also a problem. I really like romming, hacking, etc.
I honestly think I'm just going to end up going with the S4. I feel like I'd love the iPhone and the integration for a month or so and eventually end up getting bored and hating it. Integration between my computer (the Mac Mini) an iPad should be enough. But I'll probably continue to play with my mom's iPhone. It's still a pretty interesting device and I find it to be very well built and fluid.

I had a Macbook for a few years and I didn't die.
I've been really unimpressed with Apple's products lately. iOS just feels horribly dated to me and the synching wasn't that amazing from what I experienced - I can do better on Android these days though I bet Apple has caught up.

I can tell you this. I have an iPhone5 that was provided to me by my work. It was great at first. I went from from an Iphone 3g to Android and thought I would never turn back. After my Evo 3d I've grown to loath my Evo3d and couldn't wait for the S4.
With this said after about two weeks of using the iPhone I have grown bored and annoyed with the device. Since it is a work phone I am not allowed to jailbreak or do anything "illegal" with it. I prefer to have a nice clean desktop and quick launches that I have grown use to on my EVO3d. With that said after the beauty of the iPhone 5 (and I'm not taking anything away from it), I have come running back with a new appreciation for the Android device. I still hate my Evo3d, but I don't take it for granted for what I can do on the device. Even if I were to jailbreak the iPhone5, the one thing that wouldn't change is that I would still be limited to the same OS with its basic limitations. Even with Winterboard the device wouldn't be able to do 50% of what my outdated Evo can do.
This is just my opinion and feelings but as a daily use I would hate it. Since I only need to check emails and use it for a few work items I can deal with the iPhone.

U ll be bored from ios in 2 months...haha u can't customize it like android...ios doesnt has freedom like android...it looks faster than android because of real time priority...and android has normal priority...nothing else

Owned the 1st iPhone and a 3GS. Both unlocked and JB'ed. Then made the jump and moved to a Galaxy S2.
I couldn't go back. There are just too many limitations and restrictions. Some of the most simple processes on android are a task on the iPhone.
Everything requires hoops and leaps compared to Android, unless you don't mind doing it Apples way. I HATED itunes. Simply throwing some mp3's on an sd card and putting it in my android phone was pathetically liberating after years with an iPhone.
If you just want to use twitter, facebook, send emails, and download some games, then you'll be fine.
But everything is proprietary and what you see is what you get.
IOS looks great and the build quality on the 5 is fantastic, but, that will get overshadowed in time imo. I strongly believe cosmetics are half the reason people own the iPhone. It screams quality, but personally, the limited and restricted functionality sticks out to me much more.

I don't think I could do a Macbook again because I'd need to dual-boot Windows to get half the things I want to work. At least Linux has a strong community that's invested in creative solutions (don't have native Netflix ? That's okay, we found a way!) and it can be taken as an environment that forces you to learn - I did not get that spirit from Mac, it was much like Windows but with more limited software and a different GUI.
I do harbour a special hate for the Mac GUI. It just looks so "1980s" to me, it looks like what I'd expect from a new and still developing technology - which made it awesome back when it first came out but it needs to move on.
I built my own Windows computer for $500 and am very pleased that it can play the video games I want very well - and if anything breaks I can repair it myself and I can upgrade components as I choose - it will grow with me for years. No, I wasn't thrilled about Windows but I've had this thing for almost a year it's doing fine.
I don't hate Mac, I really don't - if they start thinking differently I'd consider them again.

If you want to carry something and relax go to apple... But for me I like missing up and with andriod you are always able to discover something new.. Its more exiting
