Your opinions on ALL OSes

Ok, basically my wife is looking into a new phone and our options are more or less limitless, she just wants advantages and disadvantages of each OS. She's not picky and doesn't always need the most popular OS, she wants form, factor, and function. I am looking for a phone that will take a sim so trying to avoid Verizon and Sprint phones. Heres my opinions on the ones I can think up.
iOS-I wouldnt touch it with a ten foot pole personally but regardless of my personal feelings if it's jailbroken it's not actually a terrible OS just a bit bland. The hardware limitations and the fact that they're still building the same updates for the 2g that they are for the 4g causes some immense limitations and I cant think of an update that made a real difference.
Android- Good but often laggy even with a snapdragon. The UI customization is nice but they're killing themselves not allowing a GPU accelerated UI. I have a Dell Streak for my "fun phone" and though I love it it does seem more appealing to have a phone that "just works" for her. I dont think android will be quite as long-lived though its doing well so far. How can one expect a UI to have devoted developers when you can get anything you want free.
Windows phone 7- Perfect business device, still in what seems almost an open beta phase and lacking a lot of basic features. More promise than any other OS but for the time being it's not living up to the hype.
BadaOS-Support? What support? plays out like a bad WebOS ripoff
Blackberry-Just the most boring thing in the world. Aside from battery life I cannot seem to realize how this OS sells well outside of the old people who dont really know how to use a phone but want something high end...
WebOS- It had it's day in the spotlight and that didn't last too long... I mean its functional but feels almost dirty compared to the more modern OSes
WM6.5- Great OS for someone who wants to devote hours and hours and hours to customizing it to be the most functional OS. Sadly the only device worth having thats wm6.5 anymore is the LEO/HD2.
These are all opinions of mine, she just wants to know the opinion of others. Thanks for your input.

Moderate, a gaming device would be great but something with a pleasant UI is more appealing

If you don't mind about the limited hardware choice then iOS is very good, especially for newcomers. It'll probably make your life easier (less questions to answer).
Android is a different matter. The experience depends highly on what manufacturer you go for, but if you choose well then you get one of the best (functionality-wise) smartphone OSes out there together with a wide choice of hardware.
Personally I'd suggest the Nexus S (if you can cope with 16GB storage), or failing that the Galaxy S. Both are lovely devices, but the Nexus edges it with it's lovely display, GPU accelerated transitions (Android finally somewhat smooth) and Gingerbread.
Windows Phone 7? If you're a big business and/or Office user, then it's probably the easiest OS to get working with. It has good video/gaming capabilities and a GPU accelerated UI but currently suffers from limited storage space on most devices.
Choose if you love the UI or are a OneNote addict, otherwise I'd stick to the safer bet of Android/iOS for the time-being and wait for things to play out. You probably wouldn't buy a device running iOS 1 or Android 1.5 today, so I'd wait for Windows 7 to catch-up. It is good. It will be great, just in a little while.
That said you should have no problem editing/viewing Office docs or accessing Exchange email on either Android or iOS.
BlackBerry OS - used to be the pinnacle of a smartphone OS, but a lack of innovation and poor hardware has choked the platform, and RIM have said that in the future top-end BlackBerry devices will run the QNX OS they are running on the PlayBook.
WebOS - very good, but still failed to catch up fully with iOS/Android even with the recent update. That said, I think someone has to try a WebOS first - some people love it, some hate it. Limited range of apps.
WinMo 6.5 - Do not buy anymore, unless your business requires it.
Bada OS - Just no. No developers. No apps. No fantastic devices.

I thank you for your reply my wife still wants WP7 but I keep trying to tell her that even though I use it it could take time to work the kinks out. She is considering android but samsung devices are hard to go with especially the galaxy S devices due to the buffer overrun issues. I think we've more or less narrowed it down to those two its just hard to pick which though she is in love with the netflix integration. I think its between the mytouch 4g and the samsung focus

The MT4G is a fantastic device. I'm sure she'd have more fun with it than WP7 and its limited options.

Now when you say limited options what do you mean? I only ask because I recently converted to windows phone 7 after tinkering with android for 2 years and never once having something that felt 'complete.' Also is there any site that I can make one of those phone histories on or do I have to use paint?

WM: The most tested OS good and stable for business, thousands of apps, tweaks, themes, etc a lot of knowledge.
Android: Nice to play with as all is new and free but I got easily bored
WP7: So new, needs more time to get mature. Too closed similar to apple

The hardware limitations and the fact that they're still building the same updates for the 2g that they are for the 4g causes some immense limitations and I cant think of an update that made a real difference.

No they aren't. The 2g is stuck on Ios 3.2, while the Iphone 4 is on 4.2. Plus the hardware in the Iphone 4 is just about as fast as Snapdragon, and cortex. Hell, the A4 is a Cortex A8.
Android- I like Android a lot, but some of the manufactures don't take it as seriously as I like, and some manufactures are terrible with updates.(Samsung) And the UI isn't hardware accelerated AFAIK. But very easy to customize, I like that. Manufactures can make Android great, or bad.(Motorola, I'm talking to you with your Motoblur crap)
Ios- I like Ios too, but there are a few issues with it. AT&T is the big one, and the second issue because of that is limited data. I can't say that it's a bad thing that to make it useful to my standards, you have to jailbreak it because every Android phone I've had I've rooted for it to work great. I wish Apple would come out with an Iphone with a screen bigger than 3.7inch. And I wish Steve would not have so much hatred towards Adobe, because that means no real flash for Iphone while it's fully capable of it. Frash is okay for the Iphone, but real flash would be better.
BB Os- I'll tell you the same thing I tell people I sell these to. Blackberry is a business phone, so don't expect the fun and colorful UI you see in other OSes. It is very simple to use though, but RIM is stuck on hardware that was released almost 2 years ago. The Pre is originally clocked at 600 mhz like the Droid, the chip inside the Torch which is the newest Blackberry is only at 624 mhz, like the Storm, the Storm 2, the Bold, etc etc. Also, Blackberry does not like to update their phones to the current OS, despite most of the phones having the same specs. It is what it is.
Windows Mobile 6.5- Not bad, but not great. A nice business OS though.
Windows Phone 7- I like it a lot, but no flash support right now is a killer. I don't mind it not having things like bluetooth transfer since I really don't use it, but I would like copy and paste. Also they need to hurry up and expand to different carriers! D:
Symbian- Personally I never used it, but people say it is very versatile.
Webos- I like Webos a lot, I really do. But there simply isn't enough support behind it from developers, which means a huge lack of apps compared to Android and Ios. The big thing that kills me about it, is the fact that the Pre only has a 3inch screen, even the Pre 2 has a 3inch screen despite having specs that can be compared to the Droid 2!
Bada- Samsung, so I can't expect too much from it. I haven't tried it though, and I really don't want to.

What kind of user is your wife? If she wants a phone that does games, txt, email etc... then you have to take into consideration what is the best at these?
IOS even with it's limitations is probably the most "polished" out there. Has a huge base of followers, tons of apps, and it does work out of the box. Sure it's bland in its interface and your locked in with AT&T and the iWorld of Apple. Not to mention that you can't do anything with the hardware itself.
Android: Catching up to Apple - but still not the "iPhone killer" - yet. I personally love Android - and with enough tweaking I don't experience lag on my Captivate. But.. I would highly suggest NOT getting a Galaxy S phone. Too many issues with the devices to merit getting. I would go with an HTC.
Win Mobile 7: Although this looks promising.. if I wanted a boring interface and all the junk that goes with the OS? I'd have an iPhone. And not to mention it's still in its infancy - so who knows if it will go the way of the Do Do bird?

Should also mention about Android, if she gets an Android phone but doesn't root it, then she'll have to deal with all the bloatware the carriers put on the phone.

Can someone really tell me what WP7 and iphone comparisons there really are aside from their more strict markets. I mean yeah you cant sideload apps as easy as android but what motivation do devs have to continue developing if their apps are distributed for free.

need opinions to choose tablet with ios or android

hello,
first of all, i love follwing the tech and seeing present devices getting better with better softwares.. i own a xoom for 2 months and i really love it.. but -like most of the people here, probably- i believe the software is not fully optimized for the hardware.. in my computers i always used nvidia products, because i believe it did its job very good even when the ati competitors were better on the paper.. so here i am with a tegra 2 SoC and i cant find any game as smooth as ipad games..
now -in addition to my xoom- i was planning to buy a samsung galaxy tab 10.1 (one is for my girlfriend, one is for me but mostly to be used together) but when i was making some research, last night i found nvidia ULP and ipad 2 comparisons and could not believe the results.. ipad 2 was 2-6 times faster/better than the motorola xoom.. imeedieatly i downloaded the same tests and i ran them too and ended up with same results unfortunately.. and then i downloaded lots of high quality games and every time i ended between 20-25 FPS.. i think it is not satisfying..
i dont believe apple has the alien technology, i think the software makes the difference.. so i asked myself to questions;
"what do i plan to use my tablet for" and
"what is going to happen when iOS5 and ICS comes"???
my expectations from ISC is to bring more optimisation to our devices, i cant say no to new cool feautures but first i want my existing ones to be perfect...
to be honest, i can not answer both questions... i can only answer what i want from a tablet.. and again to be honest i guess i am hungry for performance, even though i do not need it. so in every tests tegra 2 cpu beats a5, and the web pages (the first thing i want my tablet to do professionally) are super faster loading then the ipad2 ... besides i love customizable home screen definition, i love being easy to carry my media from the computer or to the computer with one cable without any software.. and i love being able to connect my hard drive so that i can give up from my laptop once i buy a bluetooth keyboard..
but my second question; what is going to happen when iOS5 and ICS here? will iOS5 catch up with android by beating it in CPU and usefullness tests too or will ICS cacth up with the smoothnes and games performance and the promises they gave?
in my country asus transformer, acer iconia a500, ipad 2 16gb, motorola xoom are same prices and samsung galaxy tab is about 40 dollars more expencive in second hands or abroad products.. so i dont care about the price here.. what i am asking is which one is going to better according to your opinion between all these devices? and which one is going to give me more development and more increase in perfection?
i am so confused and every opinion is wellcomed.. i am planning to use it mostly for web browsing as a laptop replecement, gaming, photo and video making/editing/storing and -if possible- using engineering programs like the icircuit in ipad or the autocad in galaxy s (i have it on my galaxy s but i could not run it in tablet)..

as you are FULLY aware... we are talking apples and oranges here
1. iOS is for people who want something out of the box.. not worried about setting much up and have a billion games... for now atleast (something my grandma would like to be honest)
2. Android OS is far superior with whats under the hood and the customizations and endless tweeking...
my simple answer is... do you want something the same as every other...er... individual (*snickers* - as the ad's would have you believe).. or something that is truly your OWN device
i bet 9 out of 10 people in the xoom forum has something that is entirely unique to the next... i love this aspect... i like having something a little different.. i like to tweek untill i break it or have the best device out there.. 3/4 of the time if there is an app for the iOS there is a better app for android.. for example.. there is only crap remote mouse apps for iOS and yet i have unified remote full for android a masterpiece and i can control nearly every aspect of my computer via a remote with my android devices (yes there is splashtop HD for iOS and android but this is not always a viable solution and trust me i have both)... this is just one example as i cbf putting down the many apps i have that are better (foto tile slideshow - the live wallpaper is another AWESOME app that comes to mind)
last and not least... lets remember software for both devices are going crazy.. however now the tables have turned with android leading the way and iOS playing catch up and ice cream is going to be one hell of an update to which im pretty sure xoom will be compatible =]
i know i may have not 100% been to topic but had to express something (you did say all views were welcome lol)

I agree with the above poster...and will add that no matter what we wish, we will never have the very best, fastest,most bleeding-edge device because once we buy, there will always be something newer, faster, better, etc. IOS gives you what it wants you to have. Android lets you have (or create) what you want.
If you are rooted, with Tiamat Hammerhead Rom and the Tachi oc gpu kernel, and a launcher like ADW Ex, could the Xoom be any smoother?
It does make a difference how hands-on you want to be.

i guess i am trying to look at it as computers.. when i had my desktop it was not a big deal when one of the parts was getting old/slower becuase i was able to change only that one without spending big money... but once that world (both hardware and games) got larger it got harder to follow and find the best one.. so i felt like i was lost between nvidia and ati products.. then i switched to laptops when i became more mobile in daily life and when laptops offered more graphic power.. and i always thought GPU first and the ram 2nd, and the HDD 3rd.. CPU was ok to wait.. because CPU tech is already a lot higher than todays daily process needings..
so with the same feeling i have the same reflex to go for the better GPU one.. i feel like the weaker GPU one is going to get old faster/earlier.. this scares me..
and there is also the untidyness in the android world.. there are hundreds of phones with different specs and only a few of them has the full control of every feauture android can give you.. so when you buy a cheap android phone you are not only lacking some hardware, but also being some short on the software too.. they solved this mostly by making the tegra 2 the center of the tablets and i believe ICS will bring even more tidyness to the world just like apple world.. but i still have my suspicious with ICS, because i have read an opinion here in xda, he says ; ICS is a big development for 2.3 devices not for the 3.x devices.. but i want to believe better drivers will come and help us benefit from our hardware better.. nvidia has done that before when the game crysis was out, they increased the overall performance by %10 for every 8xxx card with a new firmware..
besides i made some research and some experiments; apperiantly this ULP is first defining the need of the FPS and then setting it as a limit to keep the power comsumption low.. so even though it can go faster or produce more FPS it stays in the limit of 28 especially in the desktop while ipad can go with 60 FPS.. i guess this is excatly what makes me jealous.. because i feel like my tablet does not have power to do that...
so basicly, i do not like apple anymore after they sue everyone they see as a thread... but i also believe the complains i made (the belief of the GPU being much more worse than the ipad 2 GPU) scares me.. i put my faith on the new software before, to nokia.. and every time they have given a new software to their "smartphones" they ruined it even more.. so far, in android, everything is just going good.. every new version came with better optimizations and i want to believe it is going to be like this in the future..
i guess my opinions and fears are mostly emotional and coming from my unfortunate experiences.. but i get attached to every device of mine and i want them to be good enough and last long enough .. so i do not want to feel like i am buying something to be old so quick under the shadow of new coming kal-el and already existing apple ipad 2..

Buy a xoom and root it! You have the use of SD card, flash drives, and USB hdd's. My wife looked at the options and realized she takes photos and needs access to her camera and to her hdd she uses to store those photos. Not one other tablet can do what the xoom can do! Sure it has some flaws, but at the same time it has less of those flaws than any tablet I have tested so far. My Logitech wireless mouse works, and every other device I have at my house. One cable to do it all, not several diff things like the tab 10.1. You want a custom PC, then here it is!

Maybe you should just be prepared to buy and sell whatever you no longer want so you can buy something new.Unfortunately none of us, except e.mote can tell the future.

I guess your points are valid considering alot if the economic uncertainty.. However one must argue that the ipad in all its glory is not a technological advancement.. Think about it.. U can do some neat things yet you cant replace a desktop with it.. Yet the Android comes so close it can almost blur the line entirely.. You can also try and get a windows 7 tab for cheaper as i was looking at these but i weighed up the usefulness and the tech side in me and now people watch me screw around with the xoom on the train and how individualistic it is and then my phone is a new avenue for full customization.. Sure they are not for all and its funny to watch the smartest people i know fumble with such a device and stick to apple babble like its the be all and get slugged a premium its great to see the sheep follow =]

Yesterday i found an ipad2 from a friend and put the xoom and the ipad on the table together and decided to make both devices very tired with my expectations.. I wanted to see which one was going to give up first (or which one i was foing to give up first ) i jailbreaked the ipad and have already rooted my xoom.. First did web experience, turned flash off and let them race .. Xoom was showing off in the beginning.. But once the tabs were more than 6 it started to slow down, on the other hand ipads slowing down was like this; wheb i cliked on a tab my waiting time extended lineerly with the quantity of tabs.. Then i looked at the photos and videos but apperiantlly itunes is tuning photos to a lower size when sending them to ipad.. So i did not like this.. Because i like to carry my stuff.. What if i wanted to carry the original sized photos to another device? Ipad failed here.. But then i nova2 in xoom, and it felt so bad.. Like 15-25 fps.. Dungeon defenders is not so different either.. But i kept testing and ipad kept failing.. Espesially in file management and easy file transferring and independence lets xoom to be the leader.. But then i learned google bought moto.. And ICS is planning for new quad core tegra3 platform or some other quad core platform with so much more powerfull gpu s.. I felt like ourtablets have been sold us ust to be temprorary leaders of the leaders.. I mean i paid this money to this tablet to have the dominant of the market when ICS is out.. But apperiantly ICS will come with new dominants.. So i will feel like i paid not only for a temprory OS but also a temprorary hardware.. I know , no hardware ia immortal but i am afraid i wont be able to have benefit of android world once the quad cores are out.. I know this hecause when i had galqxy s i was able to do anything in android world but now i have galaxy ace qnd i hardly cqn listen to rqdio akd write this at the same time.. It is lqgging as hell.. So this fear of being outdated in the very early future is taking over me.. I now understand why all the idevice owners are so cool about anything because they dont have to think about being outdated anytime.. But i have to think about overxloxking my device to play a game my galaxy s or iphone 3gs is already capqble of playing out of the box..
I love android world and i really want it to be better and i have read it was going to be 1.8 times faster and better when the ICS is out.. I want to bwlieve this but i qlso do not want my device outdated before at least, one year..

essentially... when do u want a device... NOW or NEVER?.. there is always going to be a newer better device in the future... why did you buy your phone when u did when there are better phones out now or the future... same with your computer... same crap... if you wait for the next one you will never have anything and never enjoy the benefits of such a device... personally im happy to have a device for 12 months maybe less and grab the next newest bit... because someone else in my family will benefit form the older software and i continue with the newest gadget

This is my sentiment exactly. You sound like a mouse who is caught running on a treadmill. Get off and relax a bit. Enjoy your Xoom or give it to your lucky girlfriend and get something else. Personally, I've gone thru three Android tablets just since November, and I'll be keeping my Xoom for a while...there's still so much app development that needs to happen to catch up to the tablet form-factor/resolution, and to exploit tegra 2 ---it will be a while until quad cores are fully exploited, I'm sure.

^^ exactly... this is my second tablet in less than a year and just the difference between froyo and honeycomb is astounding... i did my research before buying this tab.. in fact from my first experience i didn't want another tab at all... i despise apple products on general principle (not relevant but yeh) so it took alot of research and convincing about another tab.... i was going to buy a galaxy tab 10.1 yet upon buying it at auction i came across the xoom.. and viewed the true capabilities and noted that the galaxy tab is just a android iOS device and the xoom is a true android device and something that can fulfill my experimental side..

Just buy the iPad 2.
2 great tablets, no one needs to persuade you to use android.

i am only fan of people who develope, share, help and moreover ask to themselves and try to answer what they are doing with their devices and what they are planning to add to this in the future.. i am not fan of companies..
i know myself, i did this mistake before; i saw the 60 FPS shiny world of the iphone and when i was most bored with my lag-crazy nokia i swicthed to it (3gs) and found myself trying to buy a perfect book page by page and i was not able to choose the chapters..
when i had iphone i tried to customize the hardware limitations, unfortunately it was impossible.. then i tried to make things easier (like tried to get rid of itunes) that failed too.. and after 2 months i realised my little shiny and so called super optimized phone was lagging, this was when i learned iOS was able to lag too..
then after another failing nokia symbian update experience i tried android with galaxy s.. and that world my friend, became my addiction..
however; when i was making surfing throuh other forum sites i ran into some opinions and fears. they have become my fears too.. now i am making a summary of them in very short sentences, so i believe i will make myself more clear;
first thing like i said i always believed in every mobile device the GPU gets older first.. so, especially in my laptops i always tried to choose the better GPU over te CPU or the other specs.. and one day i was reading reviews about tegra 2 potential but then i saw ipad 2 was -sometimes- up to 5 times faster than it in graphic tests... that made me scared..
the second thing; i am fully aware of that our hardware is as valuable as its software and nokia failed me about it again and again.. one day, i found an web page which says ICS will make the performance 1.8 times better.. i assume (i want to assume) this is mostly graphic performance because CPU performance is already the best but i thing nvidia drivers needs to be optimized.. so the best thing is to wait for ICS and then decide about how android-tablet worlds growing bigger and success.. but, on the other hand, we are waiting for the tomorrows technology with yesterdays device.. this is my second fear, because i heard the quad core products are being released in this fall.. i am scared of being outdated even before i can enjoy the full performance of my xoom..
i have just shared these two fears and then realised apple owners did not have them.. so i asked here if apple is better at them.. it was not an "should i buy apple or android" topic.. but if people said "tegra 2 and honeycomb are temprory and will be history together soon and the real devices are the quad-core ones" i would go for an ipad 2 (maybe) for 6-9 months and then go back to android..
and not to forget; in my years, i have forgatten lots of device i used with their good or bad sides but i have never forgatten the people i shared knowledge and experience with.. and i am a fan of them..

I do see your point to the temp issues with tegra 2, but at the same time the I pad can't do flash. There is only one thing that has failed to stop the use of my $3500 alienware laptop that is 4yrs old. It burns discs and I am in sure the xoom can use a USB DVD burner. So can the ipad2 support an external USB hdd? Can you use all of Facebook in the browser on the ipad2? Can you push the ipad2 beyond what the box says? NO! That is why I did not even look at apple. My wife does photography and apple could not supply what she demanded it to do, so I bought her a xoom too. So far I have not seen one other tablet come close to it. I took into account something new will come out later, but at the same time it will be an infant in it's release as well. Not much using dual core anyway. Apple is for the kids that can't jump off the cliff into the water. Android is for those wanting to live on the edge and beyond. I can work, play, relax, and tinker with my xoom. Ipad2 can't deliver for me at all. I really think you have to ask yourself what do you want your tablet to do?

thank you.. i have narrowed down the equation to samsung tab 10.1 vs xoom .. i am trying to choose between them now.. i saw samurai 2 vengence and some other games and know i am so sure it is good enough as a toy too..

None of the tegra games seem to work right on honeycomb. I do like scrabble from ea. And cordy is kinda fun. Played one of the sniper games and it wasn't bad at all. Most of the games you have to buy and I just haven't found a good one I like. I wish halo reach could be done. Then I would be set!

I bought my Xoom for a very specific reason. At the time, it was the only device running Honeycomb, and the only (major) tablet with an OS specifically designed for tablets. The iPad is great and all, but, at the end of the day, it's just a really big iPhone. I already have an iPhone, and I don't need two. The apps are better on iOS for stuff like games and cutesy programs, but better on Android for stuff like tweaking programs or developer programs.
Really, the decision comes down to whether you're going to use the device like a "normal" user or a "power" user. If all you're going to do is browse the net and check email (and play games), get the iPad. If you want some power user features (better desktop remote control, better ssh, better customization, nonstandard kernels, rooting that does a lot more, etc), then grab the Xoom.
Generally speaking, Apple's products cater to the non-tech-savvy, which sometimes annoy those of us that are tech savvy. Android, though, caters to the more tech savvy. This is why Android is more complicated to use and it also explains the app selections.

Is anyone else thinking about actually USING WebOS?

I am really starting to like WebOS a lot and since we know it is the tablets and not the OS that were scrapped, I have to wonder about a possible groundswell of new development for the native operating system.
I am not quite as excited as most about getting FroYo on this thing, I actually think it may be a downgrade, performance-wise. GingerBread struck me as slightly different than FroYo, but Honeycomb is sweet. I also have a Viewsonic Gtablet running the FlashBack Honeycomb ROM and it is pretty damn nice, but I find WebOS to be a little more elegant and refined feeling. Especially after installing PreWare and adding the performance patches and stuff.
I am not a developer, but there are a lot of them around here and quite a few of them either already got or will get a touchpad to play with. I am hoping that some of them will be impressed enough (or intrigued enough) to look at the WebOS SDK and PDK.
Since there are already drivers for full functionality within WebOS, I would think it would not be too arduous for some of these intrepid devs to port a few of the popular apps over for those sticking with it. There is also a web-based widget builder called Project Ares that looks interesting.
Anybody else? Bueller?

Webos is probably my favorite tablet os now. The problem is there's no Apps for it. I bought the touchpad for my girlfriend yesterday and she said she loved it but after 10 minutes of just checking facebook and some websites she was like, ok what now?

i'm kind of torn about using android on my TP.
i quite like the way webOS works.
i honestly can't understand why HP gave up on this thing. it's brilliant.
sure it's a little slow out of the box, but so was my HTC magic. a new rom fixed that.
it has fantastic support from the preware community.
i'm loving gestures and cards.
a 3G modem would've been nice (or a usb port to allow a dongle), but again not a big deal given that most phones these days can do wireless hotspot and 99.9% of the time if i have my tablet, i also have my phone. therefore it's always able to connect.
i'll admit the build quality leaves a bit to be desired, but for a first up effort it's pretty good.
the touchstone dock is brilliant.
i'm tempted to buy a second one so i'll have one at home and one at work.
i love android. (i'm somewhat of a fanboy)
i recommend it to friends all of the time. but after experiencing webOS i'm starting to wonder why.
EDIT: maybe HP will sell or licence webOS off to google and we can get the best of both worlds?

Since WebOS was released on the Pre few years ago I always wanted to try this OS as I mostly heard good comments about it and it looked good.
I must say that WebOS on a tablet is WOW! I love it.
I really hope new apps will be developed and that I will be able to continue to use WebOS.
I like my Android phone, but I would be happy continuing having a WebOS tablet.

I have heard that the HP Touchpad has a 3G and 4G wan aready on the chip and just waiting for software to activate. Just like the Nook color bluetooth that it never came with but was activated within Gingerbread.

I've always been interested in webOS ever playing witha mates palm pre. The cheap touchpads seemed like a great way of getting a webOS device.
I don't understand why people want to remove webOS, however I can understand trying to port android apps to it.
I'm still waiting delivery of my touchpad, cant wait to get playing around with it.

I bought for two reasons, price and Android. For $149 you cant go wrong, I thought of buying more to try and sell for a small profit but decided against it. My local Arrons had one in their store, but had access to 6 more WebOS looks cool, but I am not familiar with it at all. I really dont care to learn it being WebOS is done. If worse comes to worse and only the Android market/APPS will work on it then I will be happy Heck, who am I kidding, at such a low price I am happy no matter what!

Yep, WebOS development will continue.
I really don't understand the cry for Android either. Froyo is not that amazing, Gingerbread isn't that great either. Heck, I have owned quite a few Honeycomb tablets (Xoom, rooted Nook Color, Dell Streak 7) and none of them impressed me.
I get that people here overwhelmingly like Android. But the only merit I can see for putting Android on this guy is for the apps. And, lets be honest, anything besides Android 3.X isn't even optimized for a large display like the touchpad. The Gmail application for example is just a giant list of emails. The WebOS email interface is leagues ahead because it actually takes advantage of the screen size by layering slide-panels instead of just being a giant list of messages!
WebOS is an awesome operating system. The only things holding it back to this point have been total garbage hardware (the Pre was trash) and a lack of developer interest. With HP pushing out hundreds and hundreds of thousands of these tablets in days, its safe to say that development will speed up on the WebOS front. Applications will start to trickle in faster, and things will improve.
The desire to have Android, yet alone a non 3.0 Android, on this thing just seems silly. But whatever, each to his or her own. I for one can appreciate the qualities of WebOS and will keep using it since it is a polished, tablet friendly operating system. After the "oh wow look what I did" factor of having Android 2.X on a tablet wore off, I realized non-Honeycomb Android on a tablet really sucks.

I already have an Android Tablet...it's cool.
I bought this for a cheap price, to have as a "coffee table" device for cruising the net and checking email. Maybe a youtube video once in a while.
AND...when you register the device you still get 50GB of cloud storage through box.net. I'm looking forward to using mine and have no intentions of putting any other OS on it...

I am a huge android fan, but Ill admit that after using the TP for a few days, WebOS is hands down a better tablet OS. Its just so much more structured. Thats why Im looking forward to see what comes out of the Palmdroid project. From my understanding, theyre trying to port the Dalvik VM over to WebOS which will allow android apps to run in "cards".

WebOS is dead Install Android 3.2 Honeycomb

Haha no, not at all. This is the worst OS I've ever touched. The OS is overall sluggish and not made for a fluid experience what so ever.
I just had mine fail to download a 30MB System update about 10 or so times.
Browsing the poor apps in the market takes a minute to load each individual apps page.
The pre-installed "apps" are a link to go download it on the market which takes the aforementioned minute load of the page.
The best app would have to be the youtube app that opens up the browser to Youtube.com, absolutely ingenious!
It has. . nothing. On it. I can't even find apps if there were good apps, you can't go to the top of free apps.. there is either top, paid, or free search tabs but not a top free.
Even the browser leaves me yearning for more as I sit there and watch the checkered white boarder all over.

Best and fastest Tab ever and WebOS is simply extraordinary... what a loss that that the best Tab EVER is discontinued and the most elegant and accomplished OS for a tablet has been sentenced to death. I have an ipad2 that I really like and a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7" that I use as my phone running Android 2.3.
Nothing touches WebOS, nothing! And nothing touches the speed of the Touchpad at 1.9Ghz! Ill use and love the Touchpad for as long as I can can, even iwht limited apps and an OS that is frozen in time. What a great loss, this is just so amazingly great! If HP had launched this a year ago and seriousely wanting to make it a success, this would be for sure the ipad killer... my a million miles.. really sad, but happy I have one and that works so well.

I just got my touchpad in the mail and have been playing with it for the last couple of hours. Here is my first impression:
wow, webos is pretty impressive. I owned and used iphones, ipads, android phones and tablets extensively and I can say that webos has the simplicity and user friendliness of ios and the multitasking and openness of android. Kind of best of both worlds. If it had the dev support of ios and android, it would certainly be better than ios and a huge competitor to android.
it is such a shame that it is almost dead. HP should have sold these tabs at $250 at launch ($50 below manufacturing cost) just like they do with the consoles and build dev support. Once established, they would make a ton of money off of their app market by selling media and apps just like apple.
introducing this tab at the same price point as the already established and ridiculously popular ipad with no apps and dev support was a quick and sure way to failure.
Such a shame. I really would have liked to see a mature webos platform as a strong competitor.
ps. I am writing this comment on my touchpad 32gb while listening to grooveshark on another browser window. The speakers are pretty loud and have great audio quality. Too bad Hulu just blocked access.
ps2. I really like the usa today app a lot. Nice job with the design and the use of gestures. That is exactly what touchcreen apps should be like

NOTE: If you are looking to troll, insult the intelligence of users of any platform, or flame in any way, then you are in the wrong thread.
To understand why "true" Android tablets (read as tablets besides the Fire) are struggling to gain market share, one must first consider why the iPad, and the Kindle to some extent, has been so successful, and why people choose to use a tablet instead of a laptop in the first place. It has nothing to do with specs. It has to do with three simple words: "Ease of use."
With little effort or thinking required, anyone can pick up an iPad without it being headache inducing or bad for your blood pressure. A good example is Netflix. I don't even want to start the Netflix app on the Transformer Prime. It is painfully slow and non-responsive. On the iPad, the Netflix app with the same exact layout is as smooth as butter and arguably one of the best ways to consume Netflix content. No constantly having to glance at the battery, no rampaging through forums trying to find out why your device is constantly rebooting. It is just you and your tablet having a relaxing, intimate experience.
Unless the Android tablet makers straighten out the reboots, the app issues, the wifi issues, etc before worrying about specs, then Android on tablets is destined to go the way of the Zune.

in the case of netflix, that's netflix's failure, not Android's or the tablet makers.
as for "ease of use", if you think an Android tablet is too hard to just pick up and use, you must be especially inept. both my 56 year old mother and 72 year old step-father picked up my Transformer and were tapping and swiping away like they'd been using a tablet for years, no hiccups at all.

The biggest problem with Android tablets is shoddy,poorly optimized software and lack of apps. Android is nowhere near as smooth as iOS(ICS better than Honeycomb but still nowhere close to iPad), which really degrades the user experience. There is also a severe lack of tablet specific apps, and certain apps run fine on one tablet,but not another even though the hardware is identical. The only way Android tabs can compete is on price, which is why Kindle Fire was able to gain traction. No one I their right mind will pay the same price for an Android tablet that will be obsolete in a few months, and may not receive OS updates. Google really dropped the ball by making Honeycomb such a steaming pile of dung and launching overpriced junk like the Xoom to take on iPad 2, horrible first impression to say the least.

As said above me, the problem is indeed the lack of apps and optimizations for the tablet with both size and hardware specs.
The only reason for that, is that Android 3 was rebuilt from scratch, iOS, which was old and popular already, was simple "streched" over the screen of the iPad. Even the hardware is the same.

Google didn't release the zoom Motorola did. As for honeycomb vs ios, ios is for all purposes the same exact operating system released on the first iPhone. The advancements have been few and far between, and always behind the time. Google actually changed everything, yes some of it did not come out perfect, but honeycomb is a unique ui from gingerbread, froyo, etc. I have some issues with my honeycomb tablet but the limitations of ios out weigh my issue with honeycomb. The ipad is a great product with an offensively boring operating system
Netfilx runs on my tablet with out any lag whats so ever, and I experience no reboots unless I am pushing it with over clocking and what not. Apple makes a one size firts all product. One screen size, one processor, one clock speed, one os, one ui. Most people who complain about android made a poor choice of the device they purchased, then blame the operating system for the performance. With Apple there is one tablet.

You are definitely right. The downside about Android is not the actual software but in a way how many devices and manufacturers there are. With So many Android devices coming out every other week, it would be almost impossible for Google to be able to take their software and mod it to every new device. With Apple they have one tablet and are able to focus on making things work perfectly on that one device, no other device specs to throw in.

The iPad sells because it is made by Apple and their customers are very loyal to the brand. Developers for the iPad only have 1 (or 2 if you count the 1st gen iPad) device to test on, so there should be no problems. Android app developers have many different devices which means there is a greater chance for issues, but this is not Google's fault or even the tablet maker's fault, it's the app developer.
Android has had quite a few updates in the last few years, both UI and Linux kernel. iOS on the other hand still looks like 2007 with some newer apps included. The tablet versions of Android are still pretty young. Even if the ratio of Android tablets to phones doesn't take off, getting everyone on ICS should help out stability of tablet apps.

When people are having to read forums and sometimes open up their device to get wifi to work correctly, that is not easy to use. You may not be having this issue, but there are hundreds in the prime forum having it. People use the tablet because it is a more enjoyable experience. If the laptop is more convenient, they will use that instead, which is why people don't want to use Android tablets. They are headache inducing trying to figure out why nothing is working like it should. They have great specs, but software is more important on the tablet form factor.

Your issues are not android software related. You should of read the same forums you are talking about before purchasing the device and you would of been aware prior. Because of the fragmentation of android there are plenty of sub par decvices on the market. It is up to the consumer to make a smart decision as to which to purchase.
this is all a matter of prefference so the argument can just go round in circles. If I was to win an I Pad 2 in a raffle I would not even take it out of the box before I sold it and used the proceeds to get an android device

So you're in a small minority of people who want to waste their cash on a barely functional device running junky software. I'm pretty sure that the vast majority of people would take an iPad over an Android tablet unless it's much cheaper with a comparable ecosystem ala Kindle Fire.

I don't see the Android tablets ever surpassing the iPad. In the tablet market, the "just working" is even more of a powerful concept than the phones since tablets are generally an extra expense.

I think the real problem is that people don't want tablets, they want an Ipad. I have never been sold on the tablet craze. My screen is 4.5 inches, why would I need more? I truly believe that this is why Apple keeps the Iphone so small, to almost make a tablet a necessity.

No you don't get the point of my OP. The forums for each of the popular tablets, the app selection, and Android market share prove they are symptoms of Android on tablets.
Google and the tablet manufacturers do not get why the tablet form factor became popular in the first place. This is the point of my post.

My apologies for the bickering, although I do not agree with the premise I respect your position. I have a company iPhone and purchased an android tablet as I prefer the platform. I have a htc flyer and for half the price like it more than my wives iPad. In the end that is just me though

Tablet market is not the same as the phone market. The reason Android gained traction is because carriers needed something to combat the iPhone and it was the best alternative at the time. Android gained market share because carriers embraced it since it put them back in the driver's seat, they could take out features,install loads of crapware and modify the OS to their heart's content. The majority of Android phones sold aren't premium handsets, but low to midrange phones of the BOGO or free with contract variety. Meanwhile tablets are typically not bought with a contract and wifi models are far more popular, which cuts the carriers out of the loop. This puts vendors in a precarious position,because they can't rely on carrier subsidies and can't compete with Apple on price due to their purchasing power. Trying to push an Android tablet at $500+ is an automatic fail because there aren't enough Apple haters or hardcore geeks who are pretty much your only market at that price point. The fact that W8 is also looming on the horizon and looks to be a much better tablet OS than anything that Google is bringing to the table doesn't help either.

More and more Android tablet makers are getting it right, starting now, just the way Google is getting the Android experience to match up to the iOS experience. It is true iOS was light years ahead in terms of beauty, simplicity, ease of use, performance etc - but Google (with Android) and many of the tablet makers (Samsung, Amazon, and now even the ODMs/OEMs in rest of the world) are catching up in terms of the OS experience - ICS is quite simply amazing, and one can't say it is horrible compared to iOS, even if one loves iOS.
The reason why many people complained about Android, rightly so, is caused by the fact that Android didn't dictate what hardware it must be run on, allowing manufacturers to make compromises/mistakes on the hardware (processor, memory, display etc) whereas Apple ensured the hardware is just as good as the OS, and even more than that Apple knew the internals of iOS and its processor/hardware really well from before, and could ensure the best optimized experience. With more manufacturers learning more about Android now - they are becoming more sophisticated in their engineering - and the Android experience will continue to flourish. And not just Google's own flavor of Android, but fork-offs like those of Amazon (and maybe others like Samsung?) may result in even more special things!
Its certainly an exciting time for Android, and in general, consumer electronics. As coders, I hope we all can add to this and bring great products to life!

As an avid android phone user, as well as a android tablet user, after comparing it with an iPad, my only gripe with my android tablet is the lack of productivity applications.
I can't seem to find one that fits my needs well enough. Most productivity apps (e.g. note taking, office applications) seems to be subpar and not a worthy laptop replacement. I haven't found a worthy office application on the iPad either. However, for note taking with a capacitive pen, iPad do have applications that performs pretty well, and those are mighty useful from the feel of it. This is my biggest gripe about the android tablet. This is coming from a university student, and of course it is probably less related to business based in terms of note taking.
Productivity aside, I love using my android tablet to watch shows, moboplayer is simply one good media player that is really convenient, unlike the iOS. As for games, there are hardly any games worth playing on the mobile platform. If I wanted proper games, I'd pick up my DS or PSP along the way rather than playing some half assed game on iOS or Android. This is my personal opinion of mobile platform gaming, most of the games are largely boring, that being said, there are some A grade games being ported off PC indie games that are worth playing on the mobile platform. Other than that, the general population of games arn't exactly worth playing.

Apple vs Android - Why Did You Pick Who Your Pick?

So, with all the new tech announced and released the last couple of weeks, it gave me an idea to do something a bit different and rather than just covering the devices, actually getting YOUR input on why you guys like Android over iPhone and vice-versa after actually be asked and not random arguments in YouTube comments. Be sure to leave a comment with your reasoning behind what you pick whilst keeping yourself from being completely biased if you can.

I had an iPhone and switched over to Android and probably won't ever go back. The amount of customisation and mods you can make on Android is incredible, plus if you're not incredibly tech savvy even a custom ROM can give someone everything they'd want in a phone in a way that a jailbroken iPhone just never could for me,
Just wish there was a public release of something I came across a few months ago called "Cider for Android" which let iOS apps run natively on Android. Would be cool to have the option to have both kinds of apps on a single device.

I love everything you can do on an Android that you can't on an iPhone. Customizations, rooting, custom ROMS, being free from iTunes, etc.

Well I came back to Apple
Well my first smartphone was 3 GS jailbroken. Ran good, but customization sucked, even with cydia. So got a Desire HD, and Played around with different ROMS. It was cool for a while, then got Samsung Note, and Note 2. they were both ok, but not that many ROMs for them. So when I got sick of that, went back to an iPhone 5. Overall I'm pretty happy with it. Functionality is the main reason I went back I guess, asa with Android, if you customized it you had to almost always give something up.

U didnt tried a nexus ?
Root + xposed is only thing needed to achieve extreme customization without giving up anything...
I would try a iphone 5s if my dad allows me to exchange my nexus 5 wid it....lol

Chose android because there's so much more you can do with it it seems. Like when it comes to customization. You can choose different ROMs, kernals, etc. Just seem to have more freedom on android.

Originally I went with Android simply because I didn't like Apple/iTunes. I've always preferred PCs, and iTunes is one of the worst programs created (along with Real Player and Windows Vista). It wasn't until later on I learned the limitations of iOS outside of jailbreaking, short battery life, lack of 3rd party keyboards, and other such things. As time went on, I was increasingly happy I went with Android. I had LTE while everybody's iPhones topped out at 14.4Mb/s 3G. Expanding storage cost way less (and still does). Apple kickstarted the smartphone market; they weren't the first, but they were the ones that spurred on the revolution. But refusing to evolve outside their own little box that they prided themselves on thinking outside of made them fall way behind.
Obviously, many people will still and always love iPhones. The larger screens of the 6 and 6 Plus are obvious confessions by Apple that they've had their head up their collective ass for years. 4 years ago Steve Jobs said nobody will buy a phone that big (referring to the "huge" 4.3" screen of the Motorola Droid X). Samsung proved him wrong 3 years ago with the Galaxy S2, then the Note series, and have been proving him wrong ever since.
Frankly, I think iOS is just fine as an operating system. Is it the OS for me? Hell no. But I can't deny that it's well designed, well rounded, and nobody can deny the apps and games available for it. And if I had to, I could "get by" with an iPhone, since it will do pretty much anything I would want a smartphone to do throughout my day. But I also know I'd grow bored with it, and frustrated that I can't modify/customize/optimize it like I can an Android phone. And I'd never actually pay for an iPhone, unless it was an absurdly good deal (and I'd probably resell it anyway).

I went with Android over apple because my friend had just got the new Galaxy Nexus back in 2011 and he was talking about how badass it was and how you could root it and unlock it so after I saw his I had to get my own and I also was told that you cant install roms on Apple phones.

Android... Widgets, customizations, opened system... And definitely hardware. I had iPhone and this is not bad device but not for me.

I think up till now iPhone was the way to go. As much as android might have customisability and whatnot Apple was always superior in the UI and experience department in my opinion. However L is going a long way and will change things I think

I think both OS have their benefits, which I won't go into because it's a long-winded talk we've all heard before. I used to use Apple and liked it fine. Eventually it slowed down after an iOS update and it became out-of-date and I got frustrated with it. Moved over to Android and I like it, though it's not without faults. The main thing I like about Android is the ability to get another battery instead of relying on Apple's in-house repairs and service.

The operating system no longer reaches Appel Android, but it has going for it ... a very important therefore it is designed only for your own devices, while Galaxy is an android devices, all with different specifications, measurements, etc ...

Apple is too overpriced, i would pick an iPhone for €400 and a good Android phone for €400 also.
Tablets will be forever Android.

Went for Android because they had more choice in hardware and were more configurable.
Leaning towards the Windows phone atm though...
