Android tablets need work--alot of work...

Just returned from Xmas shopping and thought I was going to get some tablets for family members but found them to be frustratingly slow when compared to the iPad--which is what people are going to do, even though they shouldn't, they're going to. Google did announced that Android <2.2 is simply not ready for tablets and I couldn't agree more.
I have an iPad at home and the cheapest iPad competes successfully with the best tablets Android has, the Dell Streak and Samsung tab. Those tablets are <$600, so's the iPad. Unless there's a specific reason why you'd rather use an Android tablet when the screen is smaller and the whole tablet is overall slower, the choice is easily iPad.
I heard a shopper try to use one and comment how slow Android is. I showed him my Evo to tell him that Android's still in progress, it'll get faster. Unless you don't mind paying for $300 or less for frustration, (inexpensive) Android tablets are just not ready. I hear Honeycomb will have a tabler-optimized system.

Couldn't agree more. The galaxy tab is an embarrassment. I tried using one in a store the other day and got 3 force closes in ten minutes, plus a jerky UI and ****house resolution.

I liked the Tab a lot, thought it was really great. Didn't have any issues with it when I played it with it. But I agree to an extent. Problem is, most Android tablets are made poorly. Archos is about the only one that has made decent tablets aside from Dell and Samsung. It could be better though, I'll say that. Right now Android is suited for mobile phones. For a good reason, it's a phone OS.

More reason to look forward to honeycomb. The flagship Google tablet should set the standard for android tablets.

Yes! And they're going to kick butt. Apple optimized the iPhone's OS for three years before they brought out the iPad. Android is only about three years old, isn't it? I just hope that the crappy tablets out there now haven't damaged Android's rep.
Or Google should've just thrown ChromeOS on tablets. Chrome is basically what I use on my Ubuntu powered netbook. I rarely see the desktop anymore.

I have had a galaxy tab for about 27 days..I also have an ipad that i've had for awhile....I like the tab but it's going back tomarrow...Had 3 and all 3 had dead pixels..I think the screen is better than ipad and using the apps and playing with OS is peppy like my Vibrant but start browsing and it becomes sluggish...Some sites are much worst than others...The stock browser is by far the slowest thing ever..dolphin hd is better but still sluggish..I tried all browsers and disabling flash/plugins and different settings ...No matter what i try browsing is not smooth like my ipad...I hoped a fix came out or a ROM that would fix the laggy browsing but nothing yet....I really like the tab because of A: Android OS vs the boring basic ios4 and B: The screen is better than my ipad...While the ipad screen is very nice the tab is better and once samoled starts coming on them ohhh my!

Google had plenty of time to make the OS smooth, 2.3 is a big fail. I don't know what google has given to people but everyone believes that android will be the next big thing. Seems like we will never reach the promised land.
People had so much expectations about gingerbread, new UI, gpu accelerated graphics, the smoothness, new integration with social networking... Instead you get a 2.3 with a new keyboard and few little things people don't care.
After 2 yrs and some the OS still is not smooth, it lacks in visual appearance, the apps are crap. I don't know how much longer i'll stay with this OS. Everytime i get a new phone is always read the stickies, flash new roms rinse and repeat. I am so tired of this, i don't know how long is going to stay like this but is like google doesn't give two ****s about it.
I bought an ipad this past weekend, jailbroke it, and started installing apps and end of story. I have games that i have fun playing with and apps that doesn't look like crap. If iphone had 3g in tmobile i'd consider getting an iphone.

It seems like you're the type that just wants their computer to work..[period]. This is not a criticism, you must just not be interested in hacking and modding your phone and why should you have to? There are so many choices out there, you don't have to use an Android phone--unless you were forced into using one.
Some of the apps are crap and some are are not but the choice is yours. The good apps filter to the top and bad ones never surface. I only choose apps that are four stars or better so my apps aren't crap--not to me at least. Don't you think that sort of freedom is nice? I do!
I, for one am glad that Google doesn't give two-****s about it ( I think they do ), it's an open source project and what you do with "your" phone is up to "you". We've never had this sort of freedom and I'm grateful we finally have it. But you don't have to try new ROMs or read any stickies if you don't enjoy it. I know Android phone users who have absolutely no plans to ever root their phone because they're happy with the way the carrier set it up for them--great!

Wow, well said mate, agreed except for Microsoft phones (WinMo), you can also buy them with the idea of tweaking, hacking, configuring everything to your liking, etc. in mind, unlike blackberry and apple.

Oh? I didn't know that about WinMO. I think that to a point you can hack and mod anything you want. I've seen OS 7 running on an iPhone and thought that was impressive but have no idea if that's difficult or not. But that's not Apple's corporate philosophy where as AOSP, by definition will lends itself to extensive modification and is almost encouraged--man, I've dreamed of this.

Android is pretty big right now and still growing.

The UI has different elements from previous versions, but this isn't the first time this happened. This happens with other platforms all the time. Windows Phone 7 for not having Copy and paste off the bat, or any decent homebrew support. Apple with the lack of multitasking, or Blackberry with something actually new and specs that can rival current Android phones!

It's not just google mind you, Google can only do so much. If you're gonna blame Google, then you have to blame Qualcomm, Samsung, TI, HTC, etc etc for making the phone and some of the drivers. And I don't know about you, but I didn't flash a new rom every day now. I just get a rom that's best for me, and if it needs updated, I update it. Same thing with stock roms. If Google didn't give 2 ****s about it, then why is Google still supporting Android as much as they are? I like the UI of Android a lot. Easy to customize and change, where as for the longest time in Ios and mostly still now, black background? Windows Phone 7, black background or a different color? For the apps, it's open source. That's what the reviews in the Marketplace are for. I've have good experiences with the apps.

Ios is also completely locked down in terms of development. Iphone 3g is also nothing compared to current Android phones now. An Arm11 v6 cpu, versus say an Arm Cortex a8? About 400-440mhz underclocked from 600mhz or so, versus even the Droid only being clocked at 550mhz, but having a huge advantage of better instruction sets and Adreno gpu? You obviously haven't done much homework either, Tmobile will support Iphone on their network, and there's even unlock codes in Cydia available. All you need to do, setup a plan with Tmobile, and get a Tmobile Sim card for that plan. It might now have the 3g network enabled, but there's your Iphone for you.
I'm not bad mouthing Apple, Iphone, Windows, Microsoft, WP7, or anything like that. But Apple has complete control over the Iphone and Ios(There isn't even an AT&T logo on the Iphone), WP7 is still young so we'll see how it turns out, and Android is still growing.

I would agree that the iPad is much more advanced. But the Galaxy Tab is pretty decent and I actually love the color nook. It is great for what it does...

Once released, Honeycomb should have a positve major impact on new futere Tablets.

I completely disagree. You must not have done your homework well. Right now the best tablets are the tegra tablets. They own the ipad in every way possible and are receiving alot of development. As far as I know there are 4 out now: Toshiba Folio 100, Viewsonic G Tablet, Advent Vega, and the Elocity 7". I'm on the Viewsonic G Tablet, so far the rims developed by our Dev team are 1337! They can play flash, have full market, and are hella fast!

Android based tablets, ipad etc

Hi All,
I just read somewhere that this year we can see launch of Android based Ipads. I am worried will it be a threat to Apple ipad as Android is really growing fast in the phone market as compared to iphone.

Why would you be worried about it competing with an iPad. I highly doubt that it would be an actual Apple ipad being that they are extremely proprieterial (dont know if its an actual word ) the tab as I see it, is awesome machine. Besides having options for the consumer is always great for all of us.

The main reasons in Apple iPad are the stunning graphics interface, crisp video and clear. It has superb touch screen sensitivity, Bluetooth, WiFi and 3G connectivity, an amazing 10-hour battery life and easy-to-use OS platform. The drawback in Apple iPad are Multi-tasking feature is not available and the lack of a camera.
The main reason in Android Tablet is the Android operating system which is an open-source. It means any programmer can improve the application. The other reason is it’s affordable than Apple iPad. In all seriousness though, I don't know what you are trying to say. Android based iPad? Hacking Android onto the iPad? Having a 10 inch Android tablet?

I hope that honeycomb was overhauled as much as they say it really was. As in, hopefully it's really optimized for use with tablets. Seems so far like it's going to be pretty awesome.

Nothing is really going to threaten the iPad if that is your concern. Apple has that "Nintendo" effect. The PSP graphically and gameplay wise destroy the Nintendo DS but the Nintendo DS outsells it 2 to 1. The same could be said for the Wii vs Xbox 360 vs PS3. Apple and Nintendo have built such a great reputation and set such a strategic price for their products that their going to sell like hotcakes even if they don't have the latest technology or features on the market.
The Motorola Xoom is going to be absolutely amazing, but from a general consumer standpoint it won't be able to compete with the iPad.

Apple is always on the move to stay on top of the game and I think so far they are doing a heck of a job. iPad 2 should be released in the next month or so I believe, they added some cool new features. Although others may come close to topping Apple, I'm not quiet sure if it's possible. It's definitely an interesting topic to follow..

Yea I think the android tablets are going to be successful, but it will take some time for them to get traction. All of the people who already have ipads wont be too ecstatic about buying a different tablet unless they don't like it; also with the rumored ipad 2 announcement around the corner, it will be tough.
But yea, 3.0 looks promising.

Which is exactly why I got the Captivate over the iPhone 4.

Without a doubt, there will be tablets released soon that are better than the iPad, and the upcoming iPad 2. The problem is making them attractive to the consumer.
A prime example of the Android undersell: I have ATT, and any time I enter one of their stores, none of the employees are versed in anything Android. Every prop in the store, and everything the employees talk about, revolves around the iPhone / iPad. Even after I stated that I did -not- want an iOS device, I still got the gimmicky lines about how great the Apple products are. Any time I asked technical Android questions (even though I already knew the answer), all I got were blank stares.
I have no doubt that the situation will be the same for upcoming tablets. If the carriers and stores start respecting the Android products a bit more, we might actually see real competition in sales numbers.

Really, I just want a tablet independent of my phone carrier. I will just use one on wifi.

need opinions to choose tablet with ios or android

first of all, i love follwing the tech and seeing present devices getting better with better softwares.. i own a xoom for 2 months and i really love it.. but -like most of the people here, probably- i believe the software is not fully optimized for the hardware.. in my computers i always used nvidia products, because i believe it did its job very good even when the ati competitors were better on the paper.. so here i am with a tegra 2 SoC and i cant find any game as smooth as ipad games..
now -in addition to my xoom- i was planning to buy a samsung galaxy tab 10.1 (one is for my girlfriend, one is for me but mostly to be used together) but when i was making some research, last night i found nvidia ULP and ipad 2 comparisons and could not believe the results.. ipad 2 was 2-6 times faster/better than the motorola xoom.. imeedieatly i downloaded the same tests and i ran them too and ended up with same results unfortunately.. and then i downloaded lots of high quality games and every time i ended between 20-25 FPS.. i think it is not satisfying..
i dont believe apple has the alien technology, i think the software makes the difference.. so i asked myself to questions;
"what do i plan to use my tablet for" and
"what is going to happen when iOS5 and ICS comes"???
my expectations from ISC is to bring more optimisation to our devices, i cant say no to new cool feautures but first i want my existing ones to be perfect...
to be honest, i can not answer both questions... i can only answer what i want from a tablet.. and again to be honest i guess i am hungry for performance, even though i do not need it. so in every tests tegra 2 cpu beats a5, and the web pages (the first thing i want my tablet to do professionally) are super faster loading then the ipad2 ... besides i love customizable home screen definition, i love being easy to carry my media from the computer or to the computer with one cable without any software.. and i love being able to connect my hard drive so that i can give up from my laptop once i buy a bluetooth keyboard..
but my second question; what is going to happen when iOS5 and ICS here? will iOS5 catch up with android by beating it in CPU and usefullness tests too or will ICS cacth up with the smoothnes and games performance and the promises they gave?
in my country asus transformer, acer iconia a500, ipad 2 16gb, motorola xoom are same prices and samsung galaxy tab is about 40 dollars more expencive in second hands or abroad products.. so i dont care about the price here.. what i am asking is which one is going to better according to your opinion between all these devices? and which one is going to give me more development and more increase in perfection?
i am so confused and every opinion is wellcomed.. i am planning to use it mostly for web browsing as a laptop replecement, gaming, photo and video making/editing/storing and -if possible- using engineering programs like the icircuit in ipad or the autocad in galaxy s (i have it on my galaxy s but i could not run it in tablet)..

as you are FULLY aware... we are talking apples and oranges here
1. iOS is for people who want something out of the box.. not worried about setting much up and have a billion games... for now atleast (something my grandma would like to be honest)
2. Android OS is far superior with whats under the hood and the customizations and endless tweeking...
my simple answer is... do you want something the same as every other...er... individual (*snickers* - as the ad's would have you believe).. or something that is truly your OWN device
i bet 9 out of 10 people in the xoom forum has something that is entirely unique to the next... i love this aspect... i like having something a little different.. i like to tweek untill i break it or have the best device out there.. 3/4 of the time if there is an app for the iOS there is a better app for android.. for example.. there is only crap remote mouse apps for iOS and yet i have unified remote full for android a masterpiece and i can control nearly every aspect of my computer via a remote with my android devices (yes there is splashtop HD for iOS and android but this is not always a viable solution and trust me i have both)... this is just one example as i cbf putting down the many apps i have that are better (foto tile slideshow - the live wallpaper is another AWESOME app that comes to mind)
last and not least... lets remember software for both devices are going crazy.. however now the tables have turned with android leading the way and iOS playing catch up and ice cream is going to be one hell of an update to which im pretty sure xoom will be compatible =]
i know i may have not 100% been to topic but had to express something (you did say all views were welcome lol)

I agree with the above poster...and will add that no matter what we wish, we will never have the very best, fastest,most bleeding-edge device because once we buy, there will always be something newer, faster, better, etc. IOS gives you what it wants you to have. Android lets you have (or create) what you want.
If you are rooted, with Tiamat Hammerhead Rom and the Tachi oc gpu kernel, and a launcher like ADW Ex, could the Xoom be any smoother?
It does make a difference how hands-on you want to be.

i guess i am trying to look at it as computers.. when i had my desktop it was not a big deal when one of the parts was getting old/slower becuase i was able to change only that one without spending big money... but once that world (both hardware and games) got larger it got harder to follow and find the best one.. so i felt like i was lost between nvidia and ati products.. then i switched to laptops when i became more mobile in daily life and when laptops offered more graphic power.. and i always thought GPU first and the ram 2nd, and the HDD 3rd.. CPU was ok to wait.. because CPU tech is already a lot higher than todays daily process needings..
so with the same feeling i have the same reflex to go for the better GPU one.. i feel like the weaker GPU one is going to get old faster/earlier.. this scares me..
and there is also the untidyness in the android world.. there are hundreds of phones with different specs and only a few of them has the full control of every feauture android can give you.. so when you buy a cheap android phone you are not only lacking some hardware, but also being some short on the software too.. they solved this mostly by making the tegra 2 the center of the tablets and i believe ICS will bring even more tidyness to the world just like apple world.. but i still have my suspicious with ICS, because i have read an opinion here in xda, he says ; ICS is a big development for 2.3 devices not for the 3.x devices.. but i want to believe better drivers will come and help us benefit from our hardware better.. nvidia has done that before when the game crysis was out, they increased the overall performance by %10 for every 8xxx card with a new firmware..
besides i made some research and some experiments; apperiantly this ULP is first defining the need of the FPS and then setting it as a limit to keep the power comsumption low.. so even though it can go faster or produce more FPS it stays in the limit of 28 especially in the desktop while ipad can go with 60 FPS.. i guess this is excatly what makes me jealous.. because i feel like my tablet does not have power to do that...
so basicly, i do not like apple anymore after they sue everyone they see as a thread... but i also believe the complains i made (the belief of the GPU being much more worse than the ipad 2 GPU) scares me.. i put my faith on the new software before, to nokia.. and every time they have given a new software to their "smartphones" they ruined it even more.. so far, in android, everything is just going good.. every new version came with better optimizations and i want to believe it is going to be like this in the future..
i guess my opinions and fears are mostly emotional and coming from my unfortunate experiences.. but i get attached to every device of mine and i want them to be good enough and last long enough .. so i do not want to feel like i am buying something to be old so quick under the shadow of new coming kal-el and already existing apple ipad 2..

Buy a xoom and root it! You have the use of SD card, flash drives, and USB hdd's. My wife looked at the options and realized she takes photos and needs access to her camera and to her hdd she uses to store those photos. Not one other tablet can do what the xoom can do! Sure it has some flaws, but at the same time it has less of those flaws than any tablet I have tested so far. My Logitech wireless mouse works, and every other device I have at my house. One cable to do it all, not several diff things like the tab 10.1. You want a custom PC, then here it is!

I guess your points are valid considering alot if the economic uncertainty.. However one must argue that the ipad in all its glory is not a technological advancement.. Think about it.. U can do some neat things yet you cant replace a desktop with it.. Yet the Android comes so close it can almost blur the line entirely.. You can also try and get a windows 7 tab for cheaper as i was looking at these but i weighed up the usefulness and the tech side in me and now people watch me screw around with the xoom on the train and how individualistic it is and then my phone is a new avenue for full customization.. Sure they are not for all and its funny to watch the smartest people i know fumble with such a device and stick to apple babble like its the be all and get slugged a premium its great to see the sheep follow =]

Yesterday i found an ipad2 from a friend and put the xoom and the ipad on the table together and decided to make both devices very tired with my expectations.. I wanted to see which one was going to give up first (or which one i was foing to give up first ) i jailbreaked the ipad and have already rooted my xoom.. First did web experience, turned flash off and let them race .. Xoom was showing off in the beginning.. But once the tabs were more than 6 it started to slow down, on the other hand ipads slowing down was like this; wheb i cliked on a tab my waiting time extended lineerly with the quantity of tabs.. Then i looked at the photos and videos but apperiantlly itunes is tuning photos to a lower size when sending them to ipad.. So i did not like this.. Because i like to carry my stuff.. What if i wanted to carry the original sized photos to another device? Ipad failed here.. But then i nova2 in xoom, and it felt so bad.. Like 15-25 fps.. Dungeon defenders is not so different either.. But i kept testing and ipad kept failing.. Espesially in file management and easy file transferring and independence lets xoom to be the leader.. But then i learned google bought moto.. And ICS is planning for new quad core tegra3 platform or some other quad core platform with so much more powerfull gpu s.. I felt like ourtablets have been sold us ust to be temprorary leaders of the leaders.. I mean i paid this money to this tablet to have the dominant of the market when ICS is out.. But apperiantly ICS will come with new dominants.. So i will feel like i paid not only for a temprory OS but also a temprorary hardware.. I know , no hardware ia immortal but i am afraid i wont be able to have benefit of android world once the quad cores are out.. I know , no hardware ia immortal but i am afraid i wont be able to have benefit of android world once the quad cores are out.. essentially... when do u want a device... NOW or NEVER?.. there is always going to be a newer better device in the future... why did you buy your phone when u did when there are better phones out now or the future... same with your computer... same crap... if you wait for the next one you will never have anything and never enjoy the benefits of such a device... personally im happy to have a device for 12 months maybe less and grab the next newest bit... because someone else in my family will benefit form the older software and i continue with the newest gadget

Personally, I've gone thru three Android tablets just since November, and I'll be keeping my Xoom for a while...there's still so much app development that needs to happen to catch up to the tablet form-factor/resolution, and to exploit tegra 2 ---it will be a while until quad cores are fully exploited, I'm sure.

^^ exactly... this is my second tablet in less than a year and just the difference between froyo and honeycomb is astounding... i did my research before buying this tab.. in fact from my first experience i didn't want another tab at all... i despise apple products on general principle (not relevant but yeh) so it took alot of research and convincing about another tab.... i was going to buy a galaxy tab 10.1 yet upon buying it at auction i came across the xoom.. and viewed the true capabilities and noted that the galaxy tab is just a android iOS device and the xoom is a true android device and something that can fulfill my experimental side..

Just buy the iPad 2.

i am only fan of people who develope, share, help and moreover ask to themselves and try to answer what they are doing with their devices and what they are planning to add to this in the future.. i am not fan of companies..
i know myself, i did this mistake before; i saw the 60 FPS shiny world of the iphone and when i was most bored with my lag-crazy nokia i swicthed to it (3gs) and found myself trying to buy a perfect book page by page and i was not able to choose the chapters..
when i had iphone i tried to customize the hardware limitations, unfortunately it was impossible.. then i tried to make things easier (like tried to get rid of itunes) that failed too.. and after 2 months i realised my little shiny and so called super optimized phone was lagging, this was when i learned iOS was able to lag too..
then after another failing nokia symbian update experience i tried android with galaxy s.. and that world my friend, became my addiction..
however; when i was making surfing throuh other forum sites i ran into some opinions and fears. they have become my fears too.. now i am making a summary of them in very short sentences, so i believe i will make myself more clear;
first thing like i said i always believed in every mobile device the GPU gets older first.. so, especially in my laptops i always tried to choose the better GPU over te CPU or the other specs.. and one day i was reading reviews about tegra 2 potential but then i saw ipad 2 was -sometimes- up to 5 times faster than it in graphic tests... that made me scared..
the second thing; i am fully aware of that our hardware is as valuable as its software and nokia failed me about it again and again.. one day, i found an web page which says ICS will make the performance 1.8 times better.. i assume (i want to assume) this is mostly graphic performance because CPU performance is already the best but i thing nvidia drivers needs to be optimized.. so the best thing is to wait for ICS and then decide about how android-tablet worlds growing bigger and success.. but, on the other hand, we are waiting for the tomorrows technology with yesterdays device.. this is my second fear, because i heard the quad core products are being released in this fall.. i am scared of being outdated even before i can enjoy the full performance of my xoom..
i have just shared these two fears and then realised apple owners did not have them.. so i asked here if apple is better at them.. it was not an "should i buy apple or android" topic.. but if people said "tegra 2 and honeycomb are temprory and will be history together soon and the real devices are the quad-core ones" i would go for an ipad 2 (maybe) for 6-9 months and then go back to android..
and not to forget; in my years, i have forgatten lots of device i used with their good or bad sides but i have never forgatten the people i shared knowledge and experience with.. and i am a fan of them..

There is only one thing that has failed to stop the use of my $3500 alienware laptop that is 4yrs old. It burns discs and I am in sure the xoom can use a USB DVD burner. So can the ipad2 support an external USB hdd? Can you use all of Facebook in the browser on the ipad2? Can you push the ipad2 beyond what the box says? NO! That is why I did not even look at apple. My wife does photography and apple could not supply what she demanded it to do, so I bought her a xoom too. So far I have not seen one other tablet come close to it. I took into account something new will come out later, but at the same time it will be an infant in it's release as well. Not much using dual core anyway. Apple is for the kids that can't jump off the cliff into the water. Android is for those wanting to live on the edge and beyond. I can work, play, relax, and tinker with my xoom. Ipad2 can't deliver for me at all. I really think you have to ask yourself what do you want your tablet to do?

thank you.. i have narrowed down the equation to samsung tab 10.1 vs xoom .. i am trying to choose between them now.. i saw samurai 2 vengence and some other games and know i am so sure it is good enough as a toy too..

None of the tegra games seem to work right on honeycomb. I do like scrabble from ea. And cordy is kinda fun. Played one of the sniper games and it wasn't bad at all. Most of the games you have to buy and I just haven't found a good one I like. I wish halo reach could be done. Then I would be set!

I bought my Xoom for a very specific reason. At the time, it was the only device running Honeycomb, and the only (major) tablet with an OS specifically designed for tablets. The iPad is great and all, but, at the end of the day, it's just a really big iPhone. I already have an iPhone, and I don't need two. The apps are better on iOS for stuff like games and cutesy programs, but better on Android for stuff like tweaking programs or developer programs.
Really, the decision comes down to whether you're going to use the device like a "normal" user or a "power" user. If all you're going to do is browse the net and check email (and play games), get the iPad. If you want some power user features (better desktop remote control, better ssh, better customization, nonstandard kernels, rooting that does a lot more, etc), then grab the Xoom.
Generally speaking, Apple's products cater to the non-tech-savvy, which sometimes annoy those of us that are tech savvy. Android, though, caters to the more tech savvy. This is why Android is more complicated to use and it also explains the app selections.
As the commercial goes, "it just works". This is true. Apple's devices just work. They stay in control of your device in an attempt to make your life easier and the device easier to use. Android doesn't do this, but it also has a lot more bugs and such (hence better for tech savvy people).
So, to sum everything up, if you're going to use it for just normal stuff (browsing, email, games) and you're not overly tech savvy, get the iPad. If you're tech savvy and plan to remote control computers or other such advanced features, get the Xoom.

Android tablets are no more "iPad knockoffs" than Ford vehicles are Mercedes knockoffs. They are different products for different audiences.
Android is for people who want to get things done using a tablet. The alleged "weak supply" of apps hasn't stopped me from finding an apps (usually 20 or 30 of them) to do anything I want to do on my tablet. Perhaps that's because I can spell, know English, and have a certain amount of critical decision-making ability (as witnessed by my ownership of a $27 million company).

Had a Xoom. ya it had flash, sorta. caused more problems and restarts then it was worth. Got tired of the problems, and traded it for a first gen ipad, with half the ram, half the storage and half as many processors. No crashes, surfs faster, and has fewer problems with web-sites, even though it doesn't have flash. Everything about it's UI is smoother, and easier to understand. I guess Android works ok, but not sure that hating Apple is a good enough reason to find Android better.

No offence m8 but i think your missing the point. Its fine for any 'private individual' to pimp the hell out of anything they like for what ever spurious personal reasons they have.
however ........ Ms Reardon is supposed to be a professional journalist. One of the central tenets of professional journalism (and one of the prime journalistic criticisms of online citizen journalism and blogging) is strict factual, impartiality especially on issues where commercial advantage/disadvantage may be derived from said comments.
At least (despite the phone hacking scandal) thats what journalism generally means in the UK at any rate ......... maybe America has a different concept of impartiality ........ judging from Fox news this is definitely the case.

What about those of us who were smart enough to not invest in a proprietary DRM based format. My Android apps will work on many phones, tablets, and desktops with Bluestacks or an x86 build of Android.
For music I prefer a universal DRM free format like MP3. I also will never put iTunes on my computer. I don't need some big bloated program to sync my music and apps. I can browse and install new apps from the market all through my browser. I can sync music with my android devices by plugging them into the USB port and running a simple batch file I created that uses xcopy to sync folders.
For ebooks I would rather buy in a format that will work on more devices. Even though its DRM, Amazon's Kindle Books seem to be the best option at this point, since you can read them on many more devices.

I almost totally agree with everything you said there. However a couple of points.
1/ EPUB is the industry standard, it's much more widespread and books are usually cheaper than Amazons locked in "itunes-like" ebook store. Google Books and Kobo have 3m EPUB titles, Amazon have 750k
2/ MP3 is great, it's universal, but it's also now very old, rubbish sounding and rubbish compression rates. M4A (AAC) is ISO ratified has almost as good support as MP3 these days, and is much more efficient at compressing, which means you can have either smaller files or better sounding files. I re-ripped my entire music collection to AAC/M4A and havn't looked back, it sounds much better than MP3 and the collection is still 20% smaller in disk space, it's also more suited to streaming.

But Honeycomb tablets with Tegra2 are not really that great though, I'm happy I didn't have to get a tablet last year, because I don't like Apple and I don't like Tegra2/Honeycomb.
But it looks much better now, a 2012 tablet with ICS and with Tegra 3 or better SOC that can play my actual media files (720p/1080p MKV) is something I'd actually want to buy.
And my other main purpose with a tablet is web browsing, and this is also something that sucks with Honeycomb compared to iPad or my Galaxy S2 which both have butter smooth browsers.
This is also much better with ICS luckily

CNET has its points on the short commings of android but they have given apple a complete pass on the turds they have been droping.
Since the 3g there has not been any true innovations to the device. There were 2 major software updates, one added a poor attempt at multitasking and the other copied notifications from android/windows. Who in their right mind would update from a 4 to a 4s? And why would anyone need an iPad 2 if they own an iPad? The ecosystem is self contained which is ok for some but people are shelling out hundreds every year to buy the same exact device.
I had a 3g and loved it. When the 4 came out I was like what the f is this? Why would I lock in for another 2 years for the same exact phone? On the other side in the same time frame android has gone from froyo to gingerbread, introduced honeycomb and then blended ics together. each being a major change from the last. Yes there has been bugs but that is part of the pain of actually developing new software. Now add all the variations sense, blur, touch wiz. etc and the rapid updates to these and you have unique user experiences. Google gets criticized for creativity, while apple gets rewarded for playing it safe

With the greatest respect I have to ask where you get such dumb ideas from as all your posts at xda are so vehemently anti android yet absolutely factually incorrect.
Explain what it is that makes android only barely usable if rooted. My dad and my girlfriend are your average non techy people and both have unrooted android devices that they love and both customised them a lot, and neither have had trouble with their systems so to say its unusable etc with no evidence is rubbish.
So with respect to your post perhaps you could explain why people must hate apple if they use android, why you think android sucks (reasons, not vague rhetoric) and why in a number of threads you keep saying you have to root android to make it usable when its ios that has to have warranty voided to do much with it.
I genuinely wonder sometimes if your not another poster who hates android and posting under a second account. I doubt you are but at least give reasons not vague nonsense please.

I've used both Android and iOS extensively and I can't recommend an Android phone and especially tablet(simply awful) to anyone besides an irrational Apple hater(just to watch them waste hours flashing custom roms in hope of making it not suck so bad). Only carriers and vendors, not users benefit from Android's openness, so at the end of the day it's dimly a buzzword that Google uses to target the nerd market. While iOS I'd far far from perfect it's still much more usable than Android. An average user doesn't give a hoot about rooting,live wallpapers or replacement launchers they just want something that works out of the box. Just because a tiny portion of the market(mostly people who visit this site) doesn't mind having to void the warranty in order to make their phone or tablet somewhat usable doesn't mean that an average consumer will be willing to jump through these hoops.
Furthermore, Android tablets are such trash(being kind here) compared to the iPad that no sane individual will buy them at the same price range. If someone doesn't want an iPad then they should just wait for W8 tablets, but Android should be avoided like plague.

Obvious troll is obvious. The end user benefits from Android's openness by being able to build and distribute custom ROMs without copyright infringement. Many of us thoroughly enjoy flashing ROMs, rooting, etc. We aren't doing it only to make the device usable.

The Transformer Prime is my first Android device... it crashes a half dozen times a day. I think it is a nice piece of kit, with buggy software. Im not trading it for an IPad, but Im not satisfied as I feel I should be after dropping 650 for this thing. IDK who you blame, running ICS, latest patches hasn't fixed the random reboots, wacko video artifacts after using it a few minutes, slow browsing, buggy touchscreen keyboards, apps that freeze doing the most basic operations... is it the apps, the hardware, or android?!?! I let my kid play some random apps and I get an email that I just spent $20 for some BS in game credits that don't even require a password to steal money from your account!!!! The developer doesnt respond and there's no recourse through the android marketplace...
THE WHOLE MESS IS HALF BAKED. Instead of blaming cnet for telling the truth how about you fix the problems!?!?!

I find much higher quality audio and video editing apps on my IPhone, where there seems to be nothing comparable for Android... maybe someone can point me to an App that will let me splice, add transitions, voice overs, audio, titles etc for videos I create like I can using Reel Director on IOS... show me some decent tracking, midi over wifi, synths for Android.... if they exist, prey tell.

Watching Peter pan (for free, love ice stream) with my kids on my tv using my unusable semi functioning crap android tablet. Last week I watched the UFC pay per view using this thing the call flash.
For video editing try google video editor. Have not used it much as it is made for 10" tabs and mine is 7" so it is not scaled correctly. Appears to have some of the features you want

Welcome to the land of Android, prepare for a bumpy ride. I've had similar experiences with both Xoom(possibly the worst piece of consumer electronics I ever used) and Galaxy Tab(plastic iPad knockoff with the same crappy software). Browsing on both tablets was terrible, the browser froze, and oftentimes just randomly closed with no way of recovering open tabs. They were both useless as far as media playback since apparently Tegra 2 doesn't support high profile HD video, which makes me question the sanity of the idiot Google engineer who decided to make it the reference platform for HC. At the end of the day I've come to realize that even though it doesn't have all of the "features" of Android tablets the iPad is so far superior to the Google sanctioned junk that it's not even a fair comparison.

Yeah I've tried Google Video Editor... its crap... couldn't import videos or photos to edit, so I didn't even get past the first hurdle. Maybe they'll get it past the beta stage someday, but for now its not very good.

The iPhone can't be on the top forever, can it?

It seems that ever since January of 2007, when Apple revealed the rumored iPhone that they have been on top of the mobile game. Even before the phone was even for sale, it literally became the most hyped device in the world. Well its been over 5 years and Apple continues to control the mobile tech game.
But this can't last forever can it? Let's think about the mass popularity of Blackberrys and Sidekicks. Blackberry is a dying brand and sidekick's aren't even relavent in 2012.

Tell me your opinion
Do you believe the Apple iPhone will continue to be the most popular device? Or will something eventually come along in 5-10 years and just take over the market?
I think this is a big question because many of us speak of how Apple will eventually have the iPhone 10 but we never consider the competition.

I personally feel that apple has its days numbered with the following that certain android based phones are gathering. HTC and Samsung alike are well on their ways to EVENTUALLY topple apple.
I give it three years, apple wont be on top, but will still be relevant. Unless apple changes the game a bit, 10 years and we may be saying "apple who?" There's only so many times you can sell a different variation of a general idea.

People choose iPhone due to awesome user experience having no performance glitch. Project Butter brings that to Jelly Bean. So, I think.. Android is going to take crown this time.
What I like most: Android users have big choice of hardware specs. If you purchase any digital content from Play Store (or, Amazon App Store), you can use them on large no. of devices which is not true with iTunes case!

I have but one statement to add to this:
If HTC and Samsung wasn't doing so well in the smartphone market, why does Apple keep trying to sue them for anything they can?
Hell, even the Gooapple v5, although a Chinese knockoff, is still a better phone to me just because it runs Android and not iOS.
Say or think what you may, but android should be able to corner the market inside of 12-18 months based on the amount of users alone. No more desktops, no more laptops, and net books with touchscreens that run Android 3.2 for those that want a keyboard...
The future is in your hands, brandish it like a weapon and show it off to every iPhone user you know.

fyi , Android owns over 50% of the world market for the last 2 years at least. Its now around 61% and only 29% for Apple.

I just came from an iPhone 4 to an HTC one x as my first Android device. Just about everyone I actually know that's closely related to me has an iPhone as well.
One thing I've noticed about them is that they don't really seem to care what the latest features of Android are compared to the iPhone. Even when I gloat about what my phone can do compared to their's they just don't seem quite as convinced or impressed by it.
Their only argument for staying with the iPhone is the app store, which I must agree is quite impressive. The also seem to have a misconception that Android is hard to navigate or use compared to iPhone. to some degree it is true, but I wouldn't say it's hard, its just not as user friendly as ios.
Apple will probably retain a lead until they mess up big time with their phone. I feel that moment is coming soon. The os look and feel is extremely outdated in my opinion. They need a new layout for their home screen and something different to keep it fresh.
Also I would like to mention from a personal experience that iPhone is great out the box whereas Android isn't good until you root and throw some great roms on it.

No, they won't. Samsung outsold Apple in Q1 this year. It will happen again. Instead of innovating Apple seems content to litigate and steal, meaning that they aren't bringing anything fresh to the table. People will eventually get tired of shelling out money for new iPhones with almost no appreciable differences. What will the next iPhone offer? A slightly larger screen, UI upgrades stolen wholesale from Android, maps purchased from elsewhere, and most likely 4G. Nothing cutting edge and nothing that isn't already offered in a plethora of forms in other devices.
Granted, it will take some people time to break away, especially those heavily invested in iOS apps, but it will happen. If all Google offered from its Nexus line were the same phone year after year with only minor changes how many Android users would see any need to continually upgrade? If Android users had no choice but to buy a new device every two years so that it could actually function on the newest OS how many of us would continue to support them? Androids weak point has been manufacturers and carriers not getting the new Android versions out to devices, but as devs have made clear the hardware itself is plenty capable of utilizing whatever Google brings us. That's something that iOS can't claim. Heck, even a number of newer iDevices had major issues with iOS 5. Dinosaurs will die and Apple is sounding its own dirge by refusing to stay competitive and treating its customers like idiots.

I wouldn't quite say so.
Android can run widgets, live wallpaper, custom lockscreens, different launchers, change default apps like MMS/SMS, browser, dialer, camera, etc., out of the box no rooting required.
iOS needs to be jailbroken for those features. And they still don't have widgets, except for those "widgets" in the notification pulldown (which was a complete copy of Android 1.5).
The iPhone 5 will supposedly have a 4 inch screen. The original galaxy S phones from 2010 had 4 inch screens, and the OG Droid from 2009 had a 3.7 inch screen which is bigger than the current iPhone (4S).
Apple will fall soon. A couple of years give or take

Exactly. Androids strength is also a weakness. Variety and choice comes with a price. Apple's sole control over their device and OS allows them to easily roll out updates, whereas with Android, Google, in a way, is at the mercy of manufacturers and carries. Or perhaps it's the other way around?
So what if ICS and JB take while to get official support. Open source development takes care of that problem. In fact, I think it's safe to say that user/ community made ROMs are probably better than official releases.

oh get this LOL also my girlfriends sister has had an IMac laptop or whatever you call it for a couple of years now, 2 times she had to change the hard drive. that is hella sad considering the hard drive is one and only piece of permanent storage pieces in a computer.

I totally agree. If someone can't figure out how to connect to wifi with an android phone, they're not going to magically figure it out if you hand them an iPhone. The process is the exact same no matter which platform you are on. I guess most people haven't tried ICS, because it is just as easy to use as any other OS.
In fact, in a few ways, Android is more user friendly. For example, making a ringtone from an mp3 is fairly easy on Android. Doing the same in iOS or WP7 is a nightmare. Managing music is easier if you know how to drag and drop into folders. Once they start putting NFC chips in bluetooth devices, pairing will be super easy for Android too.

LG Optimus Me = 2.8" = <$10
Lenovo A60 = 3.5" = <$30
See. ALL of the iPhones android equivalents are LOW END phones! They are all GB/FroYo! In terms of screen size, Apple needs to step up and release a 4.3" iPhone ASAP.

Samsung makes the panels for the iPhone... I would love to see apple go to another vendor, increase screen size and start selling those phones, just so Samsung can sue them for patent infringement due to screen size and technology... that would be the lol of the year!

This is true, and proof can be found in the case of all the Gooapple units sold. Its essentially the same as an iPhone with the exception of the processor AFAIK...

They can't come up with something special every time they release a new one. They are also very limited with the way they can
change the whole thing. It's no coincidence that they stuck with the same screen size for so long. If you make it bigger it's not
really "the iPhone" anymore. I think they are very careful with making such drastic changes which, as I said, limits their innovation.
