[Q] replacement screen?

anyone know where i can get a new one? how easy are these to fix?
it works fine. just cracked. im not sure how touch screens work, but it just looks like the outer glass..if thats what it is.

I heard its extremely difficult. Supposedly the touch sensor is extremely fragile. Again just what I heard.

If you are good with small parts and very patient, it is not going to be a terrible job, but I wouldnt recommend it if you havent done a digitizer before. They are very fragile, and the front bezel will require careful removal of old adhesive. Here is a video, ignore the final part which is just the LCD disassembly.

thanks! i will definitely look into this.

ok so in that video the adhesive is heated up so they can be separated, but what about putting it back together? is that same adhesive still good? what about where the ribbon cable is glued down?

I have used thin double side tape on a few, but usually I like the black rubberized superglue from the hobby store (called tire glue for RC cars). Use very sparingly. It is shock resistant and not brittle like regular superglue. Keep in mind, I have done a lot of digitizers in the past, but not on a Thunderbolt, your mileage may vary!

Very fragile is an understatement.

I had to replace mine about a week ago. I though it would be easy since I have replaced MANY iPhone digitizers. Ohhh I was wrong. I really wish I would have looked on Amazon since I had to pay 88 for one on eBay (I only buy from US sellers). The hardest part to me was seperating the LCD from the frame. I kinda man handled the old digitizer since it was broke. You will need to use a good combo of heat and force but don't pry to hard or you will crack your LCD. I recommend a blow dryer it does not get super hot and everyone has one. Use the adhesive well since that is the only thing holding your LCD and digitizer to the phone. I made the mistake of not using enough and now when my.phone is not in its case the screen likes to move around.
PS: Keep everything dust free!!! You do not want pressure points between the digitizer and LCD from dust.

ok so i replaced the digitizer, no problem. i turned on my phone and my LCD is now all f'd up. half the screen is discolored and lines, bla bla. i took it back apart and what it appears to be is that i must have pulled on the ribbon cable too hard when separating the lcd from the motherboard. its sort of stretched on one side.
So now i have to buy a new LCD i think :/ i might have a cellphone repair place put it in for me.
does anyone know if using a screen from a different phone such as the inspire will work?

There are many services that will repair these things for you, I've seen several ads on eBay to repair digitizers. I would stick with Thunderbolt parts though, unless you want a frankenbolt.

haha yea i guess you're right. its just so expensive :/ i thought maybe i could cop a super LCD. i might bid on a broken thunderbolt on ebay that still has a good screen. think i should or just buy a new one for 70/80 bucks?

Broken lcd?

My brother cracked his inspires screen and tried to change it himself. Bless his heart but he couldn't tell you the difference from the digitizer and lcd, yet he tried replacing the digitizer from watching a YouTube video.

no idea, but holy crap is changing the screen on these phones hard. I damaged a ribbon cable trying to separate the boards and ruined the phone completely.

looks like he damaged the flex connecting to the lcd.

No, actually, IMO it looks like the lcd is still in working condition, but it seems like the cable to the lcd isn't completely connected.
It's possible he broke or over-bent a part of the ribbon cable, as the post above me states. So, before you buy any new ribbons or screens, just make sure all your connections are snug and lined up correctly.

This is what I was gonna say (bad connection to the board). I just tried replacing my digitizer this weekend. On the 4th attempt of taking apart and putting back together I got it working, but it wasn't working in some spots. So I took it apart for a 5th time, and when it came back on I get no display on the LCD, but I do have a nice bright blue spot in the bottom right hand corner. I'm pretty sure I borked the LCD good the last time. The digitizer seems to work ok now though

I successfully change my HTC inspired 4g glass not the digitizer because it was working properly but now the touch doesn't work. Any of you guys know if the touch is control on the glass or LCD screen/digitizer?
Just trying to determine. If it was a bad buy in eBay lol. $27 down the drain....
PS: phone boots to main screen. since touch doesn't work can't unlock.

The glass is part of the digitizer. That is what controls the touch. The LCD is picture only.

i see small wire going all around glass . and the small connector to the lcd screen.
i have connected them both but i still have to touch.
one more question? if i touch the lcd screen without the glass will it get damage?

I got to this point to and figured out the problem was every time I put the phone back together, the little ribbon cable that goes from the glass/digitizer to the back of the LCD would come out of the connector. This was solved with a small piece of scotch tape over the cable once I had it in where I needed it to go. The next time I booted the digitizer was working and the touch screen was active. But, like I said, I must have damaged the LCD at some point the last time I took it apart.
And no, I would not recommend touching the LCD directly if you can at all avoid it. Not only do they not like direct pressure applied, the oils, dirts, etc from your skin are not good for the display either.

Make sure cable is inserted all the way and the tab is depressed. Cable should not fall out. Also to add what homeslice976 stated, you have the cable that runs from the digitizer to lcd and then the cable that goes from lcd to board. So digitizer is affected by both cables here. LCD should only be affected by the one running from lcd to board.

This is how the screen comes and explains why they are $200 its half the phone
1 remove battery cover , battery, sim card, and sd card if you have one.
2 remove the 7 screws that have red arrows pointing at them, you might keep the order but they seemed to be all the same to me
3.use your finger nail and pick to pull housing apart at the volume rocker and slide down pushing in occasionally to help separate
4. remove all connectors and the 2 black screws with red arrows. also completely remove the little blue wire its the radio antenna wire you will have to reinsert later.
5. slowly and carefully remove the board
6. remove this board with the arrow pointing at it from the arrow side you can use your hands or a pry tool
7 remove the small screw from this board shown with the red arrow and remove the board, just becareful there is adhesive where the yellow arrow is pointing
8. remove the earphone/speaker with your fingers pulling from the earphone jack, it has some adhesive on the earphone jack
9 use a small flat head and pry up the metal part and this will remove it exposing the front camera and proximity sensor
10. use a small flat head screwdriver to carefully pry up the the proximity sensor where the red arrow is this has adhesive holding it down, if it doesnt come up with the adhesive you will want to remove you will have to reuse it
and there ya go. now all your have to do is take your new screen and reverse all the steps and everything should work just fine
also if you are really careful you can remove your IMEI sticker with a razor blade and hairdryer and transfer it to your new screen =)

It is truly a painless process. Broke mine on Dec 12th, and just fixed it Wednesday. 7 minutes and it was done. The hardest part is actually getting the new screen. Most online stores stay back ordered. But I am so glad to have it back again.

200$ still seemes awefully expensive for that, i've never seen such a high price for a lcd/digitizer assembly. I guess i'll have to take extra care of it

thanks. yeah alot of the places i found that had them on ebay was in china and i didnt feel like waiting 3 weeks for something that may or may not be OEM. i came across that place via a google search and called them to make sure they had it in stock. as far as it being 200 its a little more then just digitizer and lcd its like half of the phone. i know i saw one post where someone was compairing it to the $10 3g/s iphone screens.
but i agree the tear down wasnt that hard by any means just takes some care removing the parts with adhesive .I just like helping people with something that i come across

I got mine for $169.99. Shortly after, they raised it to $199.99. It is due to the limited availibility of the part I would guess. Took forever for me to get one in.

Also be advised- Depending where you get it from, you may have less work to do. The one I got already had the USB connection/ charger board and the proximity sensor and front facing camera installed. I only had to add the main board and antenna assembly. Pretty cool, as I now have extras of those things. Never hurts to have spares!

Thanks for the high quality images. I replaced my broken screen last night...everything works great. The new screen I ordered from dealrepairs came unattached to the plastic front adding a step. I had to pry off the old broken glass and lcd piece by piece with a razor blade since it's glued in. Have to be careful at the bottom where the home button sensors are attached. The new screen had three pieces of plastic over the adhesive back including a small red piece that had to be removed before setting back into the plastic base.

As he said, that plastic base has to be peeled off the screen. Most screens come that way without the plastic bezel. So expect some fun guys.
Hairdryer helps loosen the double sided glue. It looks easy (and is) with a whole screen, when cracked though... OMG /wrist.
Be careful with a razor to peel the tape off the glass for the button sensors. The glass and the razor can damage the filament and/or the LED solder joint.

Most places I see on eBay show a picture like this:

My glass broke, but digitizer and lcd are fine. I just received the glass only from ebay yesterday. blkkouki, how hard do you think it would be to separate the glass from lcd and digitizer and glue the new glass to old lcd/digitizer? I know I will need a heat gun. Thanks.

Replacing cracked screen

So I just got the S3 like 2 days ago.. i told myself i wouldnt really take it out the house til I got some protection for it but figured hanging around the house with it wouldnt be bad .. I ordered a rubber skin for it 2 days ago and waiting for it in shipping. Cousin comes over today for a quick visit today than leaves. I took the phone outside with me in my pocket, not thinking about the jersey shorts I was wearing (really slick material) I crouch to pet my dog and it slides out my pocket and hits the ground.. just a bit of the bottom right corner screen is cracked, i think it wouldnt be too noticeable with the case (once that arrives) but it is annoying to have this done to a new phone. I see they have replacement screens on ebay, so Im thinking of just ordering one there. Irony was that I was just telling my cousin he should get a case for his iphone for these very incidents.
My S3 is pebble blue, so this gives me the chance to convert it to white if I want huh. Ive done stuff before like taking my zune mp3 player apart to swap a bigger battery in it, and always mess with computers (modded my laptop). Question is how difficult will it be to swap the screen plate?

Ouch Idk if you can just remove the front panel but you might need to mess with the lcd panel. I would look up a video on youtube.

If it is functional I would say wait. The more use you get out of it, the more other parts of the screen will get stressed, could break. The later you replace it, the better the value for you. Again, only if it works and you aren't too annoyed at the appearance. If you do go for it, maybe this might help:

I have yet to see anyone.. ANYONE replace just the screen... I have the same problem... but sammy said it would cost me 178 for them to fix...my phone is now in claims status

his vid really makes it look possible since when he got the glass/digitizer off, the screen was separate , but i cant tell if the lcd got damaged when he took the digitizer off since he used a screwdriver and didnt put much care into it since he said was already broken.

That looks so sketchy and unprofessional. It scares me.

i know the phone is fairly new so replacing just the glass/digitizer seems like no one on the net has experience documented replacing just that.

SmartWatch 2 - Inside (PHOTOS)

Have you ever wondered what's inside your SmartWatch 2 ? No need to google, you won't find. Here is what's inside. After a day from swiming pool some water got inside, no idea how , so I opened it to dry it because I couldn't turn it on. Now rests in dry rice, I will come back with and update if I could make it work again, also I need to find a way to glue the screen to the bottom / motherboard part ( 1st pic ) to make it waterproof again. I will keep you guys posted.

I had one break from diving in the ocean. The USB port is not a very good seal. Things like chlorine change the surface tension of water and may allow it to penetrate more than tap water.
I'm gonna be opening mine soon too. (I made a QI charging mod) but I want to see if I can put a coil on the inside, instead of the outside.

Well, that can be true, the port doesn't supports the pressure more than 1 meter.
Now seems it is working again! I glued the screen with a black silicone, looks like new.

While I don't think swimming with the watch was the best idea... I am truly impressed by your repairs and getting the watch to work again. Congrats, and thanks for posting the pictures!

Yup that was not a good idea, it's good to take a shower it it, not for swimming at all. Yeah, thank you, that was a challenge to open it and dry it. First I tought I completely lost it ... but seems it wasn't like that.

So, the screen is glued to the front glass I'm figuring. I broke mine and I'm guessing I need to replace the whole screen.

Yup, you are right, the front glass is glued to the screen / display. The only way will be to completely replace the front part (front glass and screen). Contact SONY Service and ask for a screen replacement, they will help you as long as you won't find replacement parts on eBay ... .
It would be great if you will keep us posted to see how you fix it.

I fixed it, purchased the LG G Watch
Perhaps at a future point in time I will find a cheap screen, cause at the current price of the watch it will cost me almost the same to repair it here in Romania (plus the time and frustration as the Sony service is out of town).

Just dropped it of the table (1.2m height) onto ceramic tiles, impact was on the side, picked it up and said "wow, it didn't break". 30 seconds later first cracks started to appear. 2 min later it looked like that.
