How NOT to separate the LCD and digitizer!

The very thin outer layer of my digitizer peeled off in one spot and my touchscreen stopped working, so I bought a new digitizer on ebay. Then I took apart my phone and got down to the LCD/digitizer, which are glued together. I tried to pull them apart and the LCD split apart, leaving one half firmly glued to the digitizer. Following are pics showing the broken apart LCD/digitizer below the new one, and a close up of one half of the LCD. The rainbow sheen is the oily liquid crystal of the LCD.
If you have to replace the LCD or the digitizer, I highly recommend buying the combo already glued together. Unless you already know how to separate them, you're gonna fail. Yeah, I hope it goes well too. Keep us posted on how it all goes, my digitizer is starting to have some lifting problems too so I would love any feedback on the process.

I had the same problem....but I have bought digitizer and lcd at once, and succsesfuly replaced them, actualy, when disasembling the htc, i have cut the speeker wire...., and after that i have order new speeker...
Anyway, now it is working better than when bought.
P.S., the LCD you have found, seller is the same...I bought from him also, (when you replace the part, you will notice that lcd contrast is not like before....)

What do you mean "you will notice that lcd contrast is not like before..."? Does it mean better contrast or worse?

And, so how SHOULD WE separate them?? Somebody please explain if you have any tips. I also got a new LCD top panel. I really don't want to get a similar result to this!

I got the LCD kit http://cgi.ebay.com/OEM-HTC-FUZE-LC...wItemQQptZPDA_Accessories?hash=item3ef8817bf6 and it does, indeed, include the LCD and digitizer. For only $20! Not only that, but it also includes a new front body piece and the LCD/digitizer are already installed. This is quite a relief because I was not looking forward to figuring out how to re-glue the new ones in the old body and have it not come out crappy. I have no idea how they can sell this item and profit.
I've posted a pic of the item's front, back, and finished install. I notice no difference in contrast whatsoever from the original screen. It's possible these really are OEM parts that somehow walked off the factory assembly line. I couldn't discern any differences from the original parts in a close inspection, and usually you can see minor differences in cheap copies.
To install, you just have to move the earpiece, buttons (power, volume rocker, PTT), flex circuit wiring harness, and hard buttons over to the new part, then reassemble reverse from the disassembly.
Overall I'm quite satisfied. The only negative is that there was no protective plastic layer over the screen, only plastic shrink wrap around the entire unit, and because of that there are some tiny scratches on the screen as seen in the last pic (there is no dust/hair on the screen, those are scratches.) It's really not as bad as the pic makes it look. You can't even see the scratches unless you hold the phone so that light reflects off in just the right manner, and when greasy from fingerprints, you can't see them at all. It might be possible to buff them out, but I'm totally satisfied with the results as is.

I broke my speaker wires, as well! On the first reassembly I forgot to replug the connector, and when I snapped the phone together one wire somehow broke. While trying to repair, I broke the other speaker wire and ended up running over the connector with my office shair. To fix I bought some 30g magnet wire (very thin stuff) and soldered to pieces of wire from the speaker terminals straight to the two spots just in front of the connector, which I correctly guessed were test points or something on the speaker traces.

anyone know where i can get a new one? how easy are these to fix?
it works fine. just cracked. im not sure how touch screens work, but it just looks like the outer glass..if thats what it is.

I heard its extremely difficult. Supposedly the touch sensor is extremely fragile. Again just what I heard.

If you are good with small parts and very patient, it is not going to be a terrible job, but I wouldnt recommend it if you havent done a digitizer before. They are very fragile, and the front bezel will require careful removal of old adhesive. Here is a video, ignore the final part which is just the LCD disassembly.

ok so in that video the adhesive is heated up so they can be separated, but what about putting it back together? is that same adhesive still good? what about where the ribbon cable is glued down?

I have used thin double side tape on a few, but usually I like the black rubberized superglue from the hobby store (called tire glue for RC cars). Use very sparingly. It is shock resistant and not brittle like regular superglue. Keep in mind, I have done a lot of digitizers in the past, but not on a Thunderbolt, your mileage may vary!

Very fragile is an understatement.

I had to replace mine about a week ago. I though it would be easy since I have replaced MANY iPhone digitizers. Ohhh I was wrong. I really wish I would have looked on Amazon since I had to pay 88 for one on eBay (I only buy from US sellers). The hardest part to me was seperating the LCD from the frame. I kinda man handled the old digitizer since it was broke. You will need to use a good combo of heat and force but don't pry to hard or you will crack your LCD. I recommend a blow dryer it does not get super hot and everyone has one. Use the adhesive well since that is the only thing holding your LCD and digitizer to the phone. I made the mistake of not using enough and now when my.phone is not in its case the screen likes to move around.
PS: Keep everything dust free!!! You do not want pressure points between the digitizer and LCD from dust.

ok so i replaced the digitizer, no problem. i turned on my phone and my LCD is now all f'd up. half the screen is discolored and lines, bla bla. i took it back apart and what it appears to be is that i must have pulled on the ribbon cable too hard when separating the lcd from the motherboard. its sort of stretched on one side.
So now i have to buy a new LCD i think :/ i might have a cellphone repair place put it in for me.
does anyone know if using a screen from a different phone such as the inspire will work?

There are many services that will repair these things for you, I've seen several ads on eBay to repair digitizers. I would stick with Thunderbolt parts though, unless you want a frankenbolt.

haha yea i guess you're right. its just so expensive :/ i thought maybe i could cop a super LCD. i might bid on a broken thunderbolt on ebay that still has a good screen. think i should or just buy a new one for 70/80 bucks?

possibly. might even need to dry out. put it in a bag of dried rice and ziplock it in there for about 2 days. make sure all the covers are off that u can take off. if you are sure its dried, it could be the display, could be the digitizer, the controllers. its like diagnosing a car, cant do that over the phone.

Should I risk fixing it?

It is impossible to say if it is worth the risk. As Darunion said the phone may dry out on its own. And it may not. It may just be the Digitizer and it could be other items. Problems could arise weeks and even months down the road. That is why it is a big deal not to get your phone wet.
Personally if it was my phone, it would sit in a bag of rice on a warm window sill for at least a week before I would even think of putting that battery back in. Any condensation on the boards and you put the battery back in and electonic components can fry.
And even then it would be trial and error getting it fixed. Hopefully it might be the digitizer then. But what if it isn't?

agreed, you could be causing additional damage to the phone. its likely not dried out. just because you can turn it on doesnt mean you should. i would still use the mentioned drying technique and then try it again later. other than that, we cant troubleshoot this problem over the internet. this isnt meant as an insult, but if you arent sure you can fix it, likely you wont. Not much we can do for you other than what we said to try for drying it out. sorry, that really sucks

Swapping the digitizer on the iPhone 3G/3Gs was incredibly simple: two screws and two cables and the whole digi+LCD was out. On the iPhone 4/4S it's considerably more involved. It seems like the Inspire 4G falls somewhere in between... not as simple as 3G, but probably easier than 4. Check YouTube; I'm sure there are video guides.

I guess I'm not completely convinced my phone is dead here...might be hanging onto a thread though.. But I thought I'd ask you guys to see if anyone has any input..
As stated previously, after replacing my digitizer I had my phone back to an operable state, but there were some spots that the digitizer wasn't working, so I took it apart one more time to make sure the small ribbon cable connecting the digitizer to the LCD had a tight connection. When I put everything back together, I got no display - only backlight. I've taken it apart 6 or 7 times since then and can't see anything that doesn't look right. When I unplug the cable from the LCD to the board, I don't even get a backlight. When I connect that cable, I get backlight but no display. The phone is booting and the digitizer seems to be responsive after booting, but no display. Is there something else I should be looking at? Obviously the cable from the LCD to the board gives the LCD power, but what controls the picture to the LCD?

The cable coming out the side of the LCD has connections for the picture, the backlight, and for the digitizer too (since the digitizer is connected to the LCD and then the LCD transfers the signal to the motherboard).
I repaired quite a few phones where the digitizer did not function correctly or only partially and it turned out to be the cable on the LCD as the issue. If you are doing the work yourself and you have a few extra dollars to spend then buy the lcd and digitizer already assembled. Something like this. Much easier.

It is a pain in the butt removing all the adhesive between the LCD and Digitizer and then you also have to have the correct double sided tape to reassemble the 2. Also trying to pry the 2 apart can damage the LCD very easily. Installing the LCD and Digitizer as one unit is much easier and much faster. Plus it gives a better fit. I have seen quite a few phones where the digitizer was replaced by itself and it was not properly attached with the correct adhesive tape. The glass was sticking up above the outside frame of the phone.

Yea that's what I should have done in the first place. It was a pain in the butt trying to get the Screen/Dig off of the LCD, and the LCD off of the frame. And now they're not back on anywhere near as well, the screen kind of falls off sometimes. I don't know if I'm gonna spend anymore money trying to fix this thing. I want a Vivid anyway

Its been forever ago, but I dropped my blackberry bold in the toilet...I totally freaked out but my bf showed me the rice trick...I was amazed it worked the next day.

This is how the screen comes and explains why they are $200 its half the phone
1 remove battery cover , battery, sim card, and sd card if you have one.
2 remove the 7 screws that have red arrows pointing at them, you might keep the order but they seemed to be all the same to me
3.use your finger nail and pick to pull housing apart at the volume rocker and slide down pushing in occasionally to help separate
4. remove all connectors and the 2 black screws with red arrows. also completely remove the little blue wire its the radio antenna wire you will have to reinsert later.
5. slowly and carefully remove the board
6. remove this board with the arrow pointing at it from the arrow side you can use your hands or a pry tool
7 remove the small screw from this board shown with the red arrow and remove the board, just becareful there is adhesive where the yellow arrow is pointing
8. remove the earphone/speaker with your fingers pulling from the earphone jack, it has some adhesive on the earphone jack
9 use a small flat head and pry up the metal part and this will remove it exposing the front camera and proximity sensor
10. use a small flat head screwdriver to carefully pry up the the proximity sensor where the red arrow is this has adhesive holding it down, if it doesnt come up with the adhesive you will want to remove you will have to reuse it
and there ya go. now all your have to do is take your new screen and reverse all the steps and everything should work just fine
also if you are really careful you can remove your IMEI sticker with a razor blade and hairdryer and transfer it to your new screen =)

It is truly a painless process. Broke mine on Dec 12th, and just fixed it Wednesday. 7 minutes and it was done. The hardest part is actually getting the new screen. Most online stores stay back ordered. But I am so glad to have it back again.

200$ still seemes awefully expensive for that, i've never seen such a high price for a lcd/digitizer assembly. I guess i'll have to take extra care of it

thanks. yeah alot of the places i found that had them on ebay was in china and i didnt feel like waiting 3 weeks for something that may or may not be OEM. i came across that place via a google search and called them to make sure they had it in stock. as far as it being 200 its a little more then just digitizer and lcd its like half of the phone. i know i saw one post where someone was compairing it to the $10 3g/s iphone screens.
but i agree the tear down wasnt that hard by any means just takes some care removing the parts with adhesive .I just like helping people with something that i come across

I got mine for $169.99. Shortly after, they raised it to $199.99. It is due to the limited availibility of the part I would guess. Took forever for me to get one in.

Also be advised- Depending where you get it from, you may have less work to do. The one I got already had the USB connection/ charger board and the proximity sensor and front facing camera installed. I only had to add the main board and antenna assembly. Pretty cool, as I now have extras of those things. Never hurts to have spares!

Thanks for the high quality images. I replaced my broken screen last night...everything works great. The new screen I ordered from dealrepairs came unattached to the plastic front adding a step. I had to pry off the old broken glass and lcd piece by piece with a razor blade since it's glued in. Have to be careful at the bottom where the home button sensors are attached. The new screen had three pieces of plastic over the adhesive back including a small red piece that had to be removed before setting back into the plastic base.

As he said, that plastic base has to be peeled off the screen. Most screens come that way without the plastic bezel. So expect some fun guys.
Hairdryer helps loosen the double sided glue. It looks easy (and is) with a whole screen, when cracked though... OMG /wrist.
Be careful with a razor to peel the tape off the glass for the button sensors. The glass and the razor can damage the filament and/or the LED solder joint.

Most places I see on eBay show a picture like this:

My glass broke, but digitizer and lcd are fine. I just received the glass only from ebay yesterday. blkkouki, how hard do you think it would be to separate the glass from lcd and digitizer and glue the new glass to old lcd/digitizer? I know I will need a heat gun. Thanks.

Then earlier today my screen went black but I can still feel the haptic feedback when pressing the menu and other buttons. I would just like to know, do I have to buy the digitizer along with the screen, just the screen or just the LCD. Thanks in advance.

Search replacing screen i727 xda. It's been discussed before. From what I remember you need to replace the screen and digitizer. It's next to impossible to separate the two.

After changing a bunch of screens for both apple and android....I would always recommend buying the complete LCD & digitizer screen replacement referred to as a screen assembly....if not it involves heat guns lots of glue that is not ment to unstick and so forth..... Most devices including the i727 make changing the screen assembly easy...
There are plenty of sites out there to show you step by step for most devices such as ifixit its my go to...for many devices and they have parts also. YouTube is another treasure trove.

I had just gotten my Skyrocket setup exactly like I wanted it and then it slipped off the seat of the car and I stepped on it. You have to replace the entire screen/digitizer assembly. There are some good you tubes on how to do that. I'll let you in on a "what not to do". I inadvertently severed the cable to the lighted buttons. No prob its an $8.00 fix. I put the new screen back in the phone, which is held by double sided tape so it wouldn't hurt to order some also. When the new cable came I looked at the phone and thought the hole at the top of the screen would be good leverage to remove the screen as I had scraped off most of the old adhesive. That was a mistake and almost a huge mistake. I cracked the new screen when I pulled on that opening on the new screen. I was just about to throw it in the trash and thought that I had the screen cable readily accessible I should plug it in. It worked perfectly- the digitizer doesn't go up that far and my case protector covers 95% of the broken screen area. It has worked perfectly since before Embryo 5. One of these days I'll get around to replacing the screen with a new one but not today. Have a pix attached.

The glass part of my screen broke recently but it kept functioning, I could still use it like nothing was wrong. Then earlier today my screen went black but I can still feel the haptic feedback when pressing the menu and other buttons. I would just like to know, do I have to buy the digitizer along with the screen, just the screen or just the LCD. Thanks in advance.

I broke my screen and replaced it for $150 off ebay. Just buy the LCD, it comes with the digitizer and faceplate, everything you need. You can't just separate the two and do it yourself for cheap, you'll ruin it. Took me no more than 10 minutes from start to finish. I recommend getting something to pry open your phone (the kits are like $2) because if you use anything like a flathead or what not, you'll scratch and chip the edges. Nails work but it's frustrating and you might put too much force trying to pry it and snap a clip.

This video is what I used to make sure there weren't any cables I had to worry about when opening it. 7 screws, some patience prying it apart and your phone is open. The rest is just swapping out the internals to your new screen. It's really simple. Not worth sending it off for $200+ and being without your phone for a week just to keep your warranty. It's probably up or almost up anyway and you still have a nice, new-looking phone to sell when you're done with it.
Plus you get the satisfaction of fixing your phone yourself.
