Replacing cracked screen - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

So I just got the S3 like 2 days ago.. i told myself i wouldnt really take it out the house til I got some protection for it but figured hanging around the house with it wouldnt be bad .. I ordered a rubber skin for it 2 days ago and waiting for it in shipping. Cousin comes over today for a quick visit today than leaves. I took the phone outside with me in my pocket, not thinking about the jersey shorts I was wearing (really slick material) I crouch to pet my dog and it slides out my pocket and hits the ground.. just a bit of the bottom right corner screen is cracked, i think it wouldnt be too noticeable with the case (once that arrives) but it is annoying to have this done to a new phone. I see they have replacement screens on ebay, so Im thinking of just ordering one there. Irony was that I was just telling my cousin he should get a case for his iphone for these very incidents.
My S3 is pebble blue, so this gives me the chance to convert it to white if I want huh. Ive done stuff before like taking my zune mp3 player apart to swap a bigger battery in it, and always mess with computers (modded my laptop). Question is how difficult will it be to swap the screen plate?

More expensive than difficult
Sent from my unlocked VZW Galaxy SIII

Ouch Idk if you can just remove the front panel but you might need to mess with the lcd panel. I would look up a video on youtube.

If it is functional I would say wait. The more use you get out of it, the more other parts of the screen will get stressed, could break. The later you replace it, the better the value for you. Again, only if it works and you aren't too annoyed at the appearance. If you do go for it, maybe this might help:

Thanks for the replies, I am researching it now.. I could probably live with it, once the rubber case is here It would cover up the edges of it and it doesnt go into the actual screen too much. But it is annoying ,
But i see alot of replacement glass on ebay that dont have the lcd screen with it , I wonder how the heck are they selling those if from what Im reading its all one piece with the lcd and touchpad.

They probably mold it themselves. cheap knock off's

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5IPaCPaY_0
his vid really makes it look possible since when he got the glass/digitizer off, the screen was separate , but i cant tell if the lcd got damaged when he took the digitizer off since he used a screwdriver and didnt put much care into it since he said was already broken.

That looks so sketchy and unprofessional. It scares me.

i know the phone is fairly new so replacing just the glass/digitizer seems like no one on the net has experience documented replacing just that.

I send a email to ask htc. They inform me that Desire HD is not using Gorilla Glass.
Here is the letter.

i don't really get the big deal with gorilla glass, my cowon s9 has it and the screen still scratches, the S9 is so light tho that if you drop it the glass wont break anyway
also, why are people dropping their phones ?
but im weird id sell my phone the moment it gets a tiny scratch on it like i did with my legend

For the fun of it, you know, testing that it is drop proof. .
It's always good to know that if you accidently drop your phone, well them people thought it would happen and put a gorilla glass for you !
I've been using mine around 6 weeks without a shield and the screen is still in pristine condition, mind you I don't put it in my pocket with other stuff in there or anywhere it might get damaged.
Take care of it and it seems you won't get a mark on it.

Wise words MrGarak. My old Hero still looks close to brand-new, no added protection, 14 months on.
Then why corning is listing it in their website in the featured products section ??

Believe me, if you accidentally drop your phone, you'll know if the display has broken or not .
I've dropped once, it just slipped of my hand while rushing to work.... and landed HEAVILY on the sides... bouncing thrice before it stop (bounced on the sides). Luckily I had TPU case on it, life saver
Of course if you drop it on a rock with the glass on the bottom, I'm pretty sure that gorilla or jurassic glass might not help much
Good find and good news for us since apparently our phone is using a "better" type of glass for our screens. I'd still won't drop it though (just saying)
You say that but on the companies that makes Gorilla glass it does say that the Desire HD has it. I took some keys to my desire HD and no scratches.

from my experience
HTC support staffs are not that knowledgeable about their product
they most rely on whatever they post on their own website

Yeah, I'm gonna go with this, more official than some rep who's most likely clueless. Still, not letting my keys near the screen! No way!
Ive had mine for a few months and not one scratch,
untill yesterday, when it was in my pocket(on its own in a case, no screen protector though)...nice scratch across top which can be seen with the screen on, and can be felt quite obviously with a finger nail.
easy to say I was gutted. I've looked after this phone like it was a living breathing thing, never dropping it or anything, and then it scratches like that?
hohum.
I'd trust the creators of the Gorilla Glass over HTC support.
I've had mine since November and i don't have one scratch on the screen.
I've dropped my phone from insane heights, on my phone you can see metal grazed off and silver, but the glass looks brand new and not one single scratch!
Confirmed or not, DHD glass proved to be quite resistant.
Personaly, I've let my DHD with my glasses, my car keys, USB Flash keys, or just in my laptop case with plenty of cables, without getting *any* traces on it. This, without any protection...
Someone should really change the name of this thread
desire hd scratch
i drooped mine with the screen down and the only scratch is on the aluminium body where is the small led .i ve got no protection for screen yet and if i compare with my old omnia 2 wich it has a plastic screen

[Q] replacement screen?

anyone know where i can get a new one? how easy are these to fix?
it works fine. just cracked. im not sure how touch screens work, but it just looks like the outer glass..if thats what it is.

I heard its extremely difficult. Supposedly the touch sensor is extremely fragile. Again just what I heard.

If you are good with small parts and very patient, it is not going to be a terrible job, but I wouldnt recommend it if you havent done a digitizer before. They are very fragile, and the front bezel will require careful removal of old adhesive. Here is a video, ignore the final part which is just the LCD disassembly.

thanks! i will definitely look into this.
ok so in that video the adhesive is heated up so they can be separated, but what about putting it back together? is that same adhesive still good? what about where the ribbon cable is glued down?
I have used thin double side tape on a few, but usually I like the black rubberized superglue from the hobby store (called tire glue for RC cars). Use very sparingly. It is shock resistant and not brittle like regular superglue. Keep in mind, I have done a lot of digitizers in the past, but not on a Thunderbolt, your mileage may vary!
Very fragile is an understatement.
I had to replace mine about a week ago. I though it would be easy since I have replaced MANY iPhone digitizers. Ohhh I was wrong. I really wish I would have looked on Amazon since I had to pay 88 for one on eBay (I only buy from US sellers). The hardest part to me was seperating the LCD from the frame. I kinda man handled the old digitizer since it was broke. You will need to use a good combo of heat and force but don't pry to hard or you will crack your LCD. I recommend a blow dryer it does not get super hot and everyone has one. Use the adhesive well since that is the only thing holding your LCD and digitizer to the phone. I made the mistake of not using enough and now when my.phone is not in its case the screen likes to move around.
PS: Keep everything dust free!!! You do not want pressure points between the digitizer and LCD from dust.
No, thats not a storm. Its just my Thunderbolt layin down this post.
thanks again guys. i went ahead and ordered the digitizer. i really hope i dont screw this up. ive never done this before
if you have a warranty, it's cheaper just to pay the deductable and get a new phone
Jesus, you people are brave; I'd not be caught dead trying to pull this kinda thing off!
its mostly because im too cheap to pay someone else to do it lol i better not screw it up though
ok so i replaced the digitizer, no problem. i turned on my phone and my LCD is now all f'd up. half the screen is discolored and lines, bla bla. i took it back apart and what it appears to be is that i must have pulled on the ribbon cable too hard when separating the lcd from the motherboard. its sort of stretched on one side.
So now i have to buy a new LCD i think :/ i might have a cellphone repair place put it in for me.
does anyone know if using a screen from a different phone such as the inspire will work?

There are many services that will repair these things for you, I've seen several ads on eBay to repair digitizers. I would stick with Thunderbolt parts though, unless you want a frankenbolt.
haha yea i guess you're right. its just so expensive :/ i thought maybe i could cop a super LCD. i might bid on a broken thunderbolt on ebay that still has a good screen. think i should or just buy a new one for 70/80 bucks?

Digitizer and back covery replacement parts

Hey guys,
Just in case you need to replace your digitizer (glass) or back battery cover you can get them here: digitizer is $68.99 and the back battery cover is $39.99

Nice find! It's pretty nice that a new "battery cover" refreshes the entire phone body.
I'm waiting for some custom backings since it is basically the whole body. I'm thinking dark red on the metal and the black plastic used in the bottom half for both

Poor me. I just dropped my Sensation and the glass shattered. Is there any experience with this only shop in terms of speed of shipping and reliability?
Does anyone know if it's do-able to replace the screen by yourself?

Oh man, really feel for you. Have a look on Desire forums for tutorial, obviously it's going to be different, but at least it'll give you some idea. It is doable.
Thanks man. I'll have a look on the Desire forum, I owned one before so I'm kinda familiar there.
I'll also browse youtube for Desire digitizer replacements.
New sources...
It would be sweet to modify a back cover...I found this on Amazon for the back cover and front bezel but the prices are pretty expensive...

How hard is it to fit the digitizer? I dropped mine today and it's shattered - very disappointed, the first time I've dropped a phone in two years and this happens.
hjkl;' why no delete?
Found the digitizer on eBay for $30 delivered
Been dealing with cnn.cn since my Sony Ericsson days. Closest thing to OEM IMO sans pricing lol.
I got a digitizer for a sony ericsson phone years ago and it's spot on, just my error in putting that crap back without the proper adhesive was my issue lol.
They didn't have installation instructions at all, you have to go online to see if anyone has done it yet and do a write up in a forum or youtube, not sure if that changed though.

Hey man ! sorry for bringing up an old thread, Did you get the digitizer of ebay ? What was / is it like, Have you fitted it ?
Can you notice thats its an after-market product or is it exactly the same ?
Got my misses the sensation 2 weeks ago, She dropped it today and smashed the screen, The phone is still useable, its just the outer glass is shattered. And i am thinking of fixing it myself on the cheap.
She complains all the time about wanting a nice new phone. I get her one and she thinks its a bouncy ball !!
When I dropped my HD2 a while back, I sent it to someone to have it fixed, for a little over $80 USD. They did a splendid job and return shipping was free, although I had to ship it to them. Took them 1 day to fix, and I got my phone back in 2 days.

Do I need to replace entire LCD or just glass for cracked screen?

So I dropped my phone pretty hard and even with a trident case on the glass cracked. Do I need a whole LCD replacement like this http://www.directfix.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=GHT&Product_Code=XX2547 or can I get the glass only http://www.directfix.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=GHT&Product_Code=XX2543

You can just replace the glass instead of the whole amoled screen, However ive seen reports on here saying that it is extremely difficult to just replace the glass as the screen and digitizer are fused together.
If you can find a good how to guide and maybe a video it would be worth trying as it would save you a lot of money, That being said get it wrong and you will need to replace the whole screen and glass, which would cost a lot more.
Either way, I hope you get it fixed !!

If your digitizer isn't affected then its just the screen but I wouldn't be too sure tho, I mean from the picture it looks like you can use it pretty good

I think the digitizer is integrated into the display in SAMOLED screens to reduce thickness and air gap between display and glass, and not in the glass cover as in old AMOLEDs like the Desire or Nexus One.
Check this One S teardown/display swap video, seems like the display+digitizer+gorilla glass is one part. Easier to replace but not cheap, directfix wants 169 USD for it. http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?desktop_uri=/watch?v=b0jGY2N2h1U&v=b0jGY2N2h1U&gl=SE
On a side note the battery is also replaceable and not soldered on so hopefully batteries will pop up on eBay soon enough.
OOUCH! I'm sorry this happened. I only have a slim case. Good thing I don't do anything extreme.

After changing a bunch of screens for both apple and android....I would always recommend buying the complete LCD & digitizer screen replacement referred to as a screen assembly....if not it involves heat guns lots of glue that is not ment to unstick and so forth..... Most devices including the i727 make changing the screen assembly easy...
There are plenty of sites out there to show you step by step for most devices such as ifixit its my go to...for many devices and they have parts also. YouTube is another treasure trove.

I had just gotten my Skyrocket setup exactly like I wanted it and then it slipped off the seat of the car and I stepped on it. You have to replace the entire screen/digitizer assembly. There are some good you tubes on how to do that. I'll let you in on a "what not to do". I inadvertently severed the cable to the lighted buttons. No prob its an $8.00 fix. I put the new screen back in the phone, which is held by double sided tape so it wouldn't hurt to order some also. When the new cable came I looked at the phone and thought the hole at the top of the screen would be good leverage to remove the screen as I had scraped off most of the old adhesive. That was a mistake and almost a huge mistake. I cracked the new screen when I pulled on that opening on the new screen. I was just about to throw it in the trash and thought that I had the screen cable readily accessible I should plug it in. It worked perfectly- the digitizer doesn't go up that far and my case protector covers 95% of the broken screen area. It has worked perfectly since before Embryo 5. One of these days I'll get around to replacing the screen with a new one but not today. Have a pix attached.

I broke my screen and replaced it for $150 off ebay. Just buy the LCD, it comes with the digitizer and faceplate, everything you need. You can't just separate the two and do it yourself for cheap, you'll ruin it. Took me no more than 10 minutes from start to finish. I recommend getting something to pry open your phone (the kits are like $2) because if you use anything like a flathead or what not, you'll scratch and chip the edges. Nails work but it's frustrating and you might put too much force trying to pry it and snap a clip.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vf6jqYejWNU (try to ignore his coke nail)
This video is what I used to make sure there weren't any cables I had to worry about when opening it. 7 screws, some patience prying it apart and your phone is open. The rest is just swapping out the internals to your new screen. It's really simple. Not worth sending it off for $200+ and being without your phone for a week just to keep your warranty. It's probably up or almost up anyway and you still have a nice, new-looking phone to sell when you're done with it.
Plus you get the satisfaction of fixing your phone yourself.
