4 Months as an Indie Android App Dev - Android Apps and Games

I'm a physicist. In English, we call that unemployed. When I graduated last August I decided to take a break from larger, colder organizations. My skills suggested that I needed to work with graphics and challenging programming. So, I decided to revisit my dream of being a game developer.
I decided to venture into creating games for Android. It seemed like a truly easy way to get a product out there since Google Play was so inviting and I already had a android phone to play with. I was familiar with opengl from a couple tiny projects with data visualization, and was a handy programmer in python, c++, or any language I found myself using. So, last August I decided to create "Number Splash (Lite)", a truly simply game for young kids learning numbers. The simplicity of the project allowed me to focus more on the challenges of producing all aspects of the game and the company to represent it. This project took 3 months to produce; my first game & product. I was rather proud despite the slow downloads on Google Play & Nabi(A kids specific android tablet and app store).
My next project was another kid's app, the point of which was to promote my company with a free, ad free game with no external links. Something truly kid safe. This 2 week long project was called "Kids Coloring & Painting" and was a full time workload during the Xmas/New Year holiday. My goal for Kids Coloring & Painting, like with my first game Number Splash, was to offer a product that was higher quality than the myriad of hopeless apps available on Android. These games were created with OpenGL ES, Java, and Adobe Fireworks. Between a couple tutorials and xda/Stack Overflow it was easy to figure out everything. You can find me on google play under the developer: DMT Source.
Google "Nehe android opengl" and you'll come across the Insanity Design website. It contains a port of the older but infamous NEHE opengl tutorials which pretty much rock no matter what platform you are coming from or going to. I jumped right into lesson 8 and had a prototype of my first app working in a couple hours! It was just a gradient blue background with bubbles floating and jiggling from bottom to top heh... Also consider checking out the Lost Garden site by Dan Cook if you need some free game art for any sort of project. I'm using some of it now for a tile based running game I am working on next, cant wait to get it out.
I use Eclipse to program my android games in Java with OpenGL ES for graphics. I create my textures in Adobe Fireworks and use uncompressed 2^n sized png's with transparency to achieve sprites. Color picking and position testing used for UI. I have recently obtained a Nexus 7 & 10 for testing and really enjoy working on both. I also use a Motorola Photon phone and the Android emulator running down to Android api level 8 to stress test my apps on weaker systems. I also made the sites for the company, and each game (appname dot com).
The downloads have been pretty horrid, but that isn't the point...Look at what I learned in 4 months thanks to online tutorials and websites like xda and stackoverflow! Thank you for that.

Opps, should have added [APP][2.2+] or possibly posted in Android General, sorry about that

You should post links to both of your apps here. They both look like great apps, and having a link makes them easy to download.
I'm downloading the kids coloring and painting now. It looks absolutely great. My child is only a few days old but I plan buying your other numbers one so that I have it when he is old enough to start learning.
EDIT - here is a link. https://play.google.com/store/search?q=dmt+source

I truly appreciate both the URL post and kind words. Once I have enough xp on my account I hope to add a bunch of links to the post. Congratulations on the new arrival by the way!

Good work man.
Added some links into the OP for you.

Thanks for the edit! That is going to help get the word out. Here is a preview of the in game level editor and a rough draft of the prototype stage for my new game, Cute Path. The art is provided by Lost Garden & Dan Cook who provide free art and design tips to developers.

Hey guys, just put up a new website to better showcase the apps. Working on a Menger Sponge fractal app, Cute Path from the previous post, and a skateboarding game with some local animators! Also added a blog with this post. Thanks again!

Our game has a unique new monetization method - buy "Ultra" version for $1.99 and all features are unlocked from the start. Or play the ad-supported free version, as cumulative gameplay time passes you will unlock all features and at the 10-hour mark all ads will disappear forever - both versions will be identical.
No one has tried this monetization method before; help support us and we can make all of our games this way!
DESCRIPTION:
Easy for anyone to learn in a minute, but deep enough to challenge the most extreme players. Fans of classic games like Tetris Attack and Bust-a-Move will love the new "shoot and flip" mechanic!
180 is an insane flipping match-3 drop action puzzle game! Launch coins into three-in-a-rows to clear the vertically-descending board. Play alternate colors by flipping coins 180 degrees at any time. Create incredible combos and be rewarded with HUGE scores - just don't let the coins touch the red line at the bottom, or it's game over!
FEATURES:
- Multiple game modes and characters, with big updates in development now! Watch for Mutliplayer, Tablet Mode, Casual Mode
- OpenFeint achievements & leaderboard tracking
- High-rez HD graphics look great on your tablet! "Lo-fi mode" (coming soon) will run on older devices too!
- Multiple gameplay secrets, can you figure them out?
HEADCASE GAMES:
This is our 1st Android title! We are expats from the big studio dev houses who have worked on some of your favorite games (Guitar Hero, Neverwinter Nights, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Alpha Protocol). After starting in iOS development we are making a splash on Android with the first release in what will be an impressive lineup of games to come! Support us and we will bring you more of what you want: great games, fully-featured for the awesome price of FREE!
This is a great game. I really like it
We released an update late yesterday which will run a lot smoother on older handsets which might have been hitting a performance wall with the previous version.
If you have a higher-end phone and it is still autodetecting a lower setting, you can try manually forcing to a higher resolution by doing the following input at the title screen:
STATS-OK-STATS-OK-CREDITS-OK-STATS-OK
this will cycle through Force SD, Force HD, and Force Auto-detect ("factory setting")
To make the adjustment "take" you need to Force Stop the app (even if you've quit out of it). Android/Settings/Applications/Manage Applications/180/Force Stop
im surprised i havent played this on the ipod touch, that ive had for 6 months lol.
Awesome tho now its on my Epic 4g with nice HD Graphics on a beutiful amoled screen
This is a very unique cconcept its like bust a move mixed with a bejeweled game, im already addicted and want to play more but im at work.
Great game runs smooth and best of all its free!!!
Both versions - updated on Android Market last night to 2.2, fixed a bug that caused the music to play over the lock screen. We're working on a fullscreen version as well (no more letterbox)
Would appreciate if any of you who are using the ad-supported version (but not ever seeing ads) could test and report if that has changed. Thank you!
We were featured as Amazon App of the Day last week, if you missed it! Got plenty of nice reviews from that fickle crowd, so if you are on the fence you might have a look.
In other news, I am beginning development of a completely different type of game, hopefully due in about 2 months or so. This next one will be a side-scroller and I think you folks will like it
poking my head in to say what's up once again - today we are getting a potentially big promotion from Nook (launched on that store less than 1 month ago) and to celebrate, we worked hard to put together a free strategy guide which explains the ins and outs of the game, check it out over here
got a bit more promotion coming yet (please, please, keep it coming.. I've been doing this stuff for a few years now and only getting broker for it :S ) and then onto the next project very soon. A throwback to classic gaming in a way that hasn't really been done properly on the mobile front before!
I got this when it was the free app of the day. I haven't played it yet, though. I haven't had time to get through all the "free" apps from Amazon! But I love the way you are monetizing it! Awesome, unique idea! Looking forward to see your newest games.
Has anyone hit 10 hours on this game? 10 hours seem like a crazy long time to play a casual phone game.
Although I do like the game and monetizing concept. Maybe it will be me hitting 10 hours.

[APP][BETA] PokeDroid--Multiplayer coming soonish!

From the depths of AP Computer Science comes...
PokeDroid--Multiplayer coming soonish!
Everyone's favorite Game Boy series comes to the little robot in your pocket with all 649 Pokemon, all their moves and abilities, and all the items!
Features include...
-Total team customization--EVs, IVs, moves, abilities, held items, gender, everything!
-Quick Battle for a simple skirmish or the endless Battle Tower to test your Pokemon mettle!
-All Pokemon, moves, abilities, and items from all games up to Black 'n' White!
-Super-duper open-source technology!
This is an open beta hosted on Sourceforge (http://sourceforge.net/projects/pokedroid/). Grab the code from CVS, take the newest nightly, dissect our code for your own benefit, all that jazz!
This being a beta, it isn't entirely functional.
What works:
-Battling from start to finish
-Team builder
-All Pokemon and their movepools
-Somewhat functional AI
-About half of the attacks
What doesn't:
-About half of the attacks
-Most abilities and items
-Some occasional force closes
-Animations (though these may never be implemented as that would take a LOT of time)
-Multiplayer is currently being worked on!
I've decided to stick with PokeDroid because it's not going on the Market anyway.
This was done for an AP Computer Science project, but it quickly took on a life of its own. We've been working on it since April-ish almost constantly. I learned Android from scratch from the Developer website and would love to teach anyone curious about Android programming.
The server is also available for donwload from the SourceForge download page, but is totally useless right now so don't waste your time

Download:
The newest semi-stable release is available on our SourceForge page.
If you're feeling daring, the newest "nightly" release can be downloaded straight from our CVS repo. It may or may not be buggier/have more features than the other download, so use at your own risk/reward.
Finally:
Send us bug reports/suggestions! We would love to hear from y'all and your opinions! All testing was done on 2 CM7 Galaxy S variants and a CM7 MyTouch 4G, but it should work on 2.1+ with any screen resolution. Since the Honeycomb emulator is ungodly slow, we were unable to test on it, but it should theoretically work. Once I get my TouchPad in the mail and it gets its Honeycomb/ICS port, I'll make sure it works on there, too.
Thanks for giving it a shot!
Ill have to check this out.

Thanks! How about "PokeBattleDroid"
Well, to be honest, I wonder how long it will take until Nintendo takes the project down They already took down the pokedex apps in the market :/
I hope they don't, looks like fun
Pokemon on Android perfect
I love Pokemon Looks really awesome!!
Downloading and trying it out now!
*Thumbs up*
how about Pokedroid Battles
I like the idea of this! I'm a little concerned about the legal usage of the characters and the names, but if you're not charging I don't know if they'd have any power over you.
As far as the name goes, I'd take it back to the roots. "Pocket Monsters" or "Pocket Monster Battle", I checked the Market and neither are registered names. Just to warn you, Nintendo did sue a company for naming their product "Monster In My Pocket" just for the similarity. You might want to get to renaming Blastoise to JeTurtle and Charizard to CharsUrFace
Nice idea but is FC Ing on the samsung galaxy s2 wegen klicking on quick battle.
how about "Droidmon"
Yooo Pokemon was onna my VERY FAVORITE and most addictive games as a child!!...y'all gotta make this official...beautiful idea dev's...will be testing and reporting!

if he could do that oh man that would make this pretty good
Thanks for the suggestions! It's still pretty buggy, sorry! Netplay will require us to learn netcode, something we'll probably do soon now that school's out. I've never gotten that particular FC before, do you have a logcat? If you aren't sure, submit a bug from the main menu (in the menu button popup). That automatically sends it to me. Yeah, we were gonna put it on the Market for free, so I don't know what they can do to us other than give us a C&D order. Making a new client for that project would probably require a complete rewrite of most of the battle logic, though we did think of doing something like that. If network play does manifest itself, it will probably be by IP rather than a matchmaking system because we don't have access to a server of our own. We'll see what we can do! Thanks again everybody!

My Thoughts and Ideas
I have a few things you can do to improve the app..
#1 - UI:
Give it a Android based feel to it. Drag down notifications when people want to battle you. Have a widget for the homescreen that will show your worldwide stats as they change.
#2 - Team Builder?
I don't think a team builder is the right approach because anyone can pick the best pokemon and just be awesome at battle. Make it a build you way up experience. Every first evolution pokemon is available (not including the legends) and develop a unlock system for the rares and legendary pokemon to be battled and caught.
#3 - Network approach
Make it a ALWAYS ON experience. You can have settings to allow when you want people to invite you to battle sessions and turn that option off when your too busy for any reason.
#4 - Other options (Not just single battling)
Add things such as Online Messaging, Pokemon Center (For a realistic pokemon healing experience), Buy Items (for healing in battle and buy pokeballs to catch pokemon)
#5 - Name
How about "PokeDroid Battle Center"
#6 - As always fix issues
Keep doing a good job to make it a stable and fun experience for all users but I find it best to start with a register and sign on kind of game but have the sign on be your one of the Gmail accounts built into your phone.
Keep up the good work
Okay, thanks for the suggestions! We'll keep those in mind as we keep working on it! Right now, our top priorities are fixing FC's and making all aspects of battle work (abilities, items, attack effects). Like I said before, the multiplayer options will be very scarce unless we can get our hands on a server to handle all of the global stats and matchmaking. But yeah, push notifications and chat and widgets would be really, really cool

Actually, it started with the paid Pokedex apps getting pulled but then they finally took down the free ones as well. TPC was the one behind all of the removals.
Interesting app, in time it'll grow into something pretty successful if you keep at it.

[GAME][2.2+] Aqua Balls, great little game

Hello fellow XDA folks! I'm happy to announce that my brother and I have just published our first game on Google play. We aren't a real company, we made this in our spare time after work. So just about as indie developer as you can get.
Aqua Balls is a portrait-mode tilting super fill-up game. It's simple but we think it's polished. You press and hold to grow the Aqua Balls, and the goal is to fill up the screen with them. Angry Balls pop your Aqua Balls as they are growing, but once they are complete they become invulnerable. There's a few worlds right now with different game mechanics but we will add more as we think of ideas. We think it's a lot of fun and pretty decent looking.
This is a free ad-supported game and I promise, no malware or airpush.
Download link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.woggle.aquaballs
Description:
Help the Aqua Balls expand and defend the seafloor!
The Aqua Balls are under attack by Angry Balls! Expand Aqua Balls to fill the screen by pressing and holding on the screen. Tilt your device to shift things around, trap the Angry Balls in small places, and help the Aqua Balls defend the seafloor! Fill the screen at least two thirds full with Aqua Balls to win. There are multiple areas to play in with different game rules for each area, and 12 levels per area. Challenge yourself to get 4 stars on every level in every area!
Aqua Balls is a portrait-mode puzzle game based on Super Fill-Up.

Comments, suggestions, downloads, and play store ratings greatly appreciated!
I personally have played this for hours (I'm the OP's brother - helped develop it), and I still find it to be entertaining. I hope that somebody here will enjoy it too! Give us a shout if you have any comments!
We just updated to 1.0.2!
- Added cloud backup (Google Cloud Storage) of savegame data
- Added facebook integration (more to come)
- Added a level number display at the beginning of each level
- Some bugfixes to background animations in world 2
Anybody have a chance to give it a try yet?
I installed this and played it for a while. I can tell that you guys really put a lot of effort into polishing it, I'm impressed. Of the games that I've seen forum-spammed lately, this is one of my favorites (I think I'll be leaving it installed). I think I might play this quite a bit. I have a few comments:
* You should add a QR download code to your first post
* I see (via addons detector) that you're only using AndEngine, AdMob, NDK, and Analytics so I'm happy to say that it looks like your game is clean there
* Everything is nice and snappy. How do you avoid having a delay while you load the levels? It feels instantaneous.
* You should add a video to your play store page
* Your credits dialog is a little ugly, but I guess that's not really that important (everything else looks great)
How are you rendering the "light rays" in the background? Do they use shaders?
Good work guys!

Hey slurmee, thanks for the comments. We pre-load the assets for the whole game at startup, that's why it feels so snappy. As far as the light rays, they're just a translucent sprite that we sweep over the background, we initially experimented with shaders, but found the sprite method to be simpler and just as effective.
My brother's been too busy to add a QR code to the top post, so here's one you can use for now:

[APP][4.0 +]BuilDota2 (v1.3) best free Dota 2 encyclopedia and calculator

Dota 2, or Defense of The Ancients is one of the most popular games today, with at least ten million players playing it online around the globe. The sheer complexity of the game with over one hundred hero characters to play and hundreds of special abilities and items to enhance the heroes' skill, is what makes it so fun.
Link to GooglePlay - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.buildota2.android.lite
And also so frustrating because, unless you already devoted a considerable amount of energy and time to play Dota 2, you won't really know what your hero will be when he will be stronger, what skills to invest in and what special items to hoard to make your hero the strongest and the most interesting for YOU to play.
YouTube Promo video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXuIPJ1SbX4
Enter BuilDota2 Lite by A.G.A.T which was made just with this purpose in mind, to let the player see how his or her character will evolve, or what character to select to be able to enjoy the game as much as possible.

BuilDota2 Lite allows you the unique option to selecting a hero, trying out different item and skill combinations and finding out how his complete stats will be under a combination. BuilDota2 Lite allows the player to tinker with his combinations in order to see how to let his character evolve to become what the play wishes for, instead of blindly trying out things.
Of course, knowing in advance what hero to select, items to hoard and skills to develop will allow the player to reach the hero he wanted in the shortest and easiest way possible, allowing the Dota 2 player to concentrate on the most important thing, the carnage.
To sum it up, BuilDota2 Lite with its always updated hero info, item combination selection, hero evolution slider, Dota 2 like interface and actual hero animation and sounds is the thing that separates the casual Dota 2 players from the serious, professional ones. There's just no other way to look at this.
Added hero bios and tips!
You should know that now you can find bio and tips for any hero by simple avatar tap
Attribute icons updated.
Hi folks. I am happy to announce that we have updated the attribute icons. Better later than never
And also we are going to provide full calculations of Invoker abilities very soon, so if you like this mad caster - get our app!

Okay, are you affiliated with the developer ? If yes,
since you're at showing guides, is it possible to include access to popular online guides too ?
Thanks for sharing, the app looks okay on small screen, good point.

Yes, I am one of the small developers gang. Lesser than a full Dota 2 Team
Regarding guides - it is a good idea and we are going to provide it as we finish with the core functionality - hero builder.
There is the Invoker left unhandled and we focus on this specific hero, because a lot of people told that they need him.
Thank you for your answer. If you have any other complains or suggestions - please share them with me.
Kind regards.
DPS calculations added to BuilDota 2 for Dota 2
Recently we got a suggestion: "Keep improving. You could add a damage calculator for example. How much damage can the hero deal in an amount of time etc."
And decided to provide dps calculations immediately. Now you have it and can find it at the parameters tooltip (with damage and armor data). It allows you to make reasonable choise between items like "Gloves of Haste" or like "Blades of Attack".
Have fun!
We decided that since the Dota 2 client does not provide clear data regarding hero EHP and DPS - we should provide it to all players who interested in improving their skills and knowledge.
Dota 2 community deserves the best - so get it!
Now you can find out immediately what is better for EHP - one more Bracer or Chainmail. You can check easily which hero has the highest start and final EHP and so on...
Have fun!
Next update is going to bring the Techies!
You should know that the new hero Techies has already been added to the App
I am happy to inform you that we have provided new updates:
- Convenient buttons for changing the hero level.
- New option to email the developer directly from the app.
Have fun!
We continue improving our application and now introduce display of roles for all the heroes with detailed descriptions of each role.
Hope you will like it!
Since the new 6.82 patch was announced we will focus on updating the app with considering all the changes.
We have made some street magic and the application size has been reduced by 2 times!
Enjoy!
We have added recipes for items(long click on an item to see it). Full navigation between components.
Happy response:
BEST APP EVER 8/5/2014, INITIAL: The only thing I feel it lacks is when you view an item, it should show the ingredients of that item. 10/8/2014, UPDATE: ☆☆☆☆☆☆ WOW I HAVE NEVER SEEN SUCH AMAZING RESPONSE FROM AN APP COMPANY. You guys are awsome and this app is already so great, and you just keep making it better. 10/8/2014: REQUEST: so I don't know if this is doable but if you could add written guides and suggested builds to your app it would be ALL IN ONE APP!!!!!!!
Challenge accepted
What's New
- Updated avatar for Venomancer.
- Fixed descriptions for some abilities.
- Added description for Necronomicon Warriors.

So, guys... Did you try to play demo? What do you think about our game demo?
Our Swordbreaker game demo have more than 1000 downloads!
Tried your demo and it was an interesting and funny game. Not sure if it contains just choices you have to make or that you can 'play it for yourself' (don't know if that's the correct English explanation).
Anyway, good luck with it

So, news of the last hour: we were published on a crowdfunding platform of IndieGoGo: http://igg.me/at/swordbreaker-game/x/11016196
We will try to collect bucks on payment of the artist and the translations into different languages since all this is very expensive to us....
Who wishes - can financially help.
I'll try it
