Just a little backstory, when the TF300 came out, I purchased one for my mom. Couple months later, TF700 came out so I picked that up for myself. Now as we all know, the TF700 has some sort of issue with the onboard flash memory which renders this tablet sluggish at times when reading/writing (like in the case of updating apps for example) but I think the TF300 is affected as well.
What I've noticed is, messing around on my mom's TF300, her tablet is butter smooth on stock firmware/rom. My TF700 was very sluggish when I installed JB firmware, which led me to having to go custom rom (CROMI 3.2 atm) in order to make it more usable. Has anyone else experienced the performance difference between a TF300 vs their TF700? It's just rather odd that a TF300, being of lower spec CPU wise, would run that much smoother than a TF700. Now CROMI has made my user experience much more pleasant, but still doesn't feel as smooth/fast as a lower end TF300.
The 10.4.4.25 update has resulted in a lot of people saying things perform much better overall for them now on the TF700T.
It would be good if someone can compare the 300 and 700 both with their latest stock ROM.

Ya I have the CROMI that is 10.4.4.25 based. It is smoother than previous versions, but still nowhere as smooth as TF300 on the latest firmware. I remember day 1, the TF300 had I/O lag just like the TF700, but that was quickly resolved and the tablet is very snappy.

Are you sure on this? I think it's an over statement "but still nowhere as smooth as TF300 on the latest firmware". Currently, I'm runing cromi on .25 with stock kernel, force gpu rendering enabled, all animation turn off and I thought that I don't think any tablets out there can go any faster or smoother!!
I compared side-by-side the TF300 JB to TF700 JB (both stock).
TF300 is much smoother in terms of animations, opening apps, screen rotation, etc. But it does have a smaller resolution which means less pixels to push

I agreed with you if they both stock, but not when I'm running cleanrom base .25 and with data2sd on sandisk card 95mb/s), I don't think any tablets can go near this beast!
I'm just having to go custom to get things running how they should be. @ the price point where the TF700 is at, I'd expect it to be better experience than the TF300. Makes me contemplate selling off my TF700 for a Nexus 7.

Oh yeah, I agreed with you 100% on this. With that kind of price tag, it performed very poorly and you probably right that a stock tf300 is out perform the stock tf700. However, I disagree with you that a stock tf300 would out perform the custom modded tf700.
Just want to confirm your observation. A stock TF300 is definitely faster than a stock TF700. The Full HD screen is one of the reasons to blame. With such resolution, a Snapdragon S4 Pro is a much better choice than Tegra 3, but unfortunately it was not available back then.
I would suspect anyone who feels the 700 is not smoother than the 300 after modding the 700. Is probably not using a newer one of the class 10 MicroSD cards, with the mod to leverage it for regular I/O instead of the internal storage. The 300 which has no MicroSD can't compete by default.

I thought it did, but before posting I thought I'd check and looked at this AnadTech Tablet Spec Comparison chart, where they fail to mention the MicroSD slot on the 300 .
OK, so then we'll leave it at the screen being the source of any perceived sluggishness. But I must say, the screen is one major reason why I went with the 700 instead of the 300. And I'm glad I did. For me, the screen makes a big difference. The tablet's performance is fine with me. And I'm still stock . (Only rooted, but bootloader is still locked.)

The tf300 does have a microsd slot. I use a 64gb uhs-1 and with a custom rom this thing flies. The screen just isnt as good as the tf700.

I've owned the tf201 tf300 and now i have the infinity, and the screen on the infinity blows the tf300's out of the water, and it's also much brighter

I can rely. I'm still surprised by the snappiness of my GF's TF300 when I pick her tablet up, but I always have trouble adapting to the much lower resolution. Seeing pixels doesn't suit me well

Custom rom or not, the 300 is faster with apps like Mamereloaded and ePSX. Tegra 3 struggles pushing so many pixels.
I have a TF300, and it does contains a micro sd slot..

Which one would you choose? Both are around the same price on the used market.... The issues resolved and the plastic shell of the 300 will not get scratched, wifi seems fine, the 201 has a better screen and gorilla glass so it might not break as easily, what do you guys thinkg?

* aluminum: weak gps/wifi. this is a really big problem of tf201
* a few hundreds difference in benchmark score doesn't mean anything in Android nowadays.
- However, the screen on Tf201 is so much better than tf300. Much brighter and much colorful.
- BTW,all asus transformer devices have a serious problem with potential I/O bottleneck , which causes lagging, slow response when using web browsers. Pretty annoying to me.

If you like game emulators like N64, Psx and MAME reloaded, the Infinity is slower than the TF300, so I prefer the TF300. The higher res display using the same gpu has some drawbacks.
A far as the sale, you lucked out, since Best Buy policy is to only match local stores and if in stock.

Prove that its slower, because i seeing a bunch of smoke in that statement. The fact that your trying to comparing performance of a tf300 and tf700 alone warrants you provide hard evidence.

it is pretty common knowledge that it takes more power to run a higher resolution...wether you will actually notice it during game play is up to the individual user...and something as simple as NES/n64 emulators shouldn't be much different...now something like shadowgun, or dead trigger...there you may notice a slight difference...but IMO, the higher res screen is soooo much better for 90% of what you do on a tablet it is worth the trade-offs

yup, i haven't gotten the ANR message since JB...but the problem is still there...just much less obvious. hoping it is 100% software related and ASUS can get it completely taken care of with another update or 2.

Compared with a store demo and seen enough. The result logically fits the fact there are 150% more pixels to push data to with the 700.
N64oid, Fpse and MAMEReloaded all have the option to leverage the gpu and this is where the 700 is slower.
Test for yourself. I can not be bothered to test again, since sticking with the 300 until a gpu is designed to better deal with higher res when pushing data to higher re displays.

So testing it in a store for a couple hours give you conclusive evidence that the tf300 outperformes the tf700... based off third party emulators that have yet to be updated to fully optimize the tf700 and its capabilities. Man you have a lot to learn about how to review devices and make accurate judgment calls on what's good and what's not. Until you sit down and own the device for a couple days, testing its parameters against that of the tf300 at cold boot, extended running time, while other processes are up and overclocked then you should not be stating that it outperforms...just saying.

Seeing as on both the Tegra 3 in the TF700 and the A5X in the New iPad are both SoC processors, size of the GPU should be measured as the total die size of the chip.
The Tegra 3 has a die size of ~80mm2, where as the AX5 has a die size of 163mm2, resulting in the AX5 actually being at least 2.0375 times the size of the Tegra 3.
So your comment suggesting "the gpu on the tf700 is 3 times the size of the ipad3" is simply incorrect.

I am awaiting the arrival of a brand new ASUS Transformer TF700.I have read almost 90% of the issues,pros and cons with this tablet.This has thrown me for a loop and as an IT student I don't think one should have to be on a constant lookout for such an expensive item.Fortunately for me the tablet comes with a 14day return for money .I am not even going to open it,I am thinking of replacing it with the NEXUS 10. I am really afraid of taking a chance with such a tablet that can go defective at any time.There is no telling just how good the NEXUS 10 is,but from initial reports its better than gambling on the Infinity.What are your views on this ? Is the Infinity worth the stress ?
If you don't want the Infinity than get the Nexus. They are two different products for different purposes and use cases.

It is all a matter of personal preference.
I owned the Infinity for 3 months before selling it. During that time, I exchanged it twice thinking I kept getting a defective tablet, because each one was slow, sluggish and had the occasional screen flicker. Not to mention the bad I/O. Another thing that bothered me is, most of the apps I used, and games I played, even YouTube, looked really washed out. I kept it until the JB update to see if it would make the tablet any better, but it didn't(to me anyway it felt more sluggish after). From day one of owning the tablet, I tried pretty hard to convince myself that I like the tablet, but after a while I gave up, and decided to sell it.
I bought the Nexus 10 when it launched, and from the moment I got it, I loved it. It's smooth, it's fast, the screen is awesome, and it feels real comfortable to hold. The front facing stereo speakers are also pretty cool, they sound great, and they can get pretty loud. All the apps that I used on the Infinity look way better on the Nexus 10.
This is just my personal opinion and preference though. It all depends on what you are going to use it for, and what you prefer.
I have owned the tf700 for about a month.
This is a fact. The read/write speed to the internal flash is really slow. To overcome this problem you will need to unlock and install a custom ROM/APKs. This will void your warranty.
It's not that the tf700 is unusable with slow flash IO, instead it makes the user experience so very aggravating.
I am going to get the ASUS TF700T for the holidays. In 8 days to be more precise. I can't wait. I am a big techie and want flash some custom stuff to it.
Also waiting for Nexus 10 to come to my country and most probably its bye bye to my infinity then.
User experience just isnt what it should be. I also have ipad and even if I hate itunes and iOS I must say that the performance is so much better. And I am talking about the very first ipad.
You could think that there is something very badly wrong with Android but I also own Samsung Note 2 and there the performance is perfect. Also what i have tried some Samsung tablets they are smooth also. I just dont want lo-res screen on tablet so will try Nexus 10
The nexus 10 has pretty much the same issues. But everyone's so busy drooling over it they forget to read the Nexus 10 forum and see that there's hardly any improvement.

I just got a nexus 10 and a week old tf700 and the user experience on the n10 is far better than the tf700. Everything just works and hardly any lag. I'm not sure how an unlocked tf700 compares though. Where the n10 fails for me is the lower contrast level of the n10. Black arent as black either. And the lack of kb with extended battery. I'm not sure which to keep.

I appreciate that so much as I 'm going to get the NEXUS 10 16gig as its all I can afford.Just worried about the lack of expandability,and no card slot.Guess I'll make do with it somehow.I love games movies and music...16gigs is nothing close to that enjoyment.

I thought it was just me that thought the tf700 was not all it's advertised to be. Whatever browser I use seems slower than it should be and seems to force close too often.The biggest irritation is that I can't keep the email working. I have MS Outlook on my PC and used that to put email on my Razr Maxx and rooted Nook tablet and they work fine. On tf700 it either doesnt work at all or works a day or 2 then all emails disappear. Sometimes it will load a few msg then as soon as I read one all the rest disappear. I have uninsalled, reinstalled several times and even tried to install it using K-9 mail. Nothing works. Is mine a lemon or an I just doing something dumb? I just know enough to be dangerous!

I got the tf700t yesterday i see what lag urtlking about but honestly it rlly does seem better unlocked with custom rom w/out not very good.... i didnt get any sods or RRs yet everything seems fine the batteey life is better than expected im not sure how the n10 is but the 700 isnt bad, the keyboard is pricey seems..... JUST MY EARLY OPINION

Honestly I don't know why I bother to respond to a thread like this, but the TF700 Infinity is the best tablet available, bar none, once you have unlocked and flashed a custom ROM/kernel. The best one for performance, smoothness, speed and stability is without doubt CleanROM Inheritance v2.7 with Clemsyn's oc kernel (gpu oc to 700). With a few additional tweaks available during ROM installation, nothing out now comes close to the Infinity. It's worth jettisoning ASUS warranty to unlock the goodness.

Any info helps man and thank you. I'm stuck between my n10 and tf700 right now so I'm really concerned that unlocking wont make it on par with the N10. Dull screen and no kb dock is the only thing steering me away from the n10 but performance is awesome. An unlocked infinity is by far the best thing you can find. The community has offered a lot to this machine that Asus just couldn't. Laggy Internet are you kidding..? With browser2ram outperforms my pc. 870 on browsermark bench. Yes the io issue is there its poor hardware but we have come a long way since stock now you can't even notice it. This think now flyes. Plus dock plus amazing screen that you can actually see outdoors. N10 or ipad come out in the sun and play.. No way..

Just got a nexus 10 today.
This thing is fast
But I discovered that it lacks a micro SD slot.
I have tons of things on msd cards now.
So the debate is whether to switch to a tf700 which has decent resolution but at least the stock rom is ridiculously slow and laggy
Does anyone have any experience with both of these platforms?

How much data you have on the microsd? what kind of data? movies/pictures? is it too big for your Nexus10 storage? Have you considered cloud storage? Nexus 10 is a better device minus the microsdcard.

Indeed the Nexus is better because of the GPU, but the TF700 can easily reaach its performance when modded. Plus the TF700 has the keyboard dock and then it has 2 batteries, 1 MicroSD, and 1 SD slot.

But I'll be damned if a CROMI-X'ed 700 is not as good if not better than a stock Nexus 10...
The N10 can have all the speed it wants; without a MicroSD slot it will always be a lesser device.
I've tried the n10 on a display in Germany a few days ago. Aside from the frankly hideous shape, it was also nowhere near as 'gloriously fast' as people make it out to be.
My TF700 on stock next to it could keep up rather well, I imagine it's quite a bit faster on Cromix.

I don't know how you guys testing the Nexus 10, but I'm using my cousin N10 and this thing is fast. The N10 will blow the tf700 fully modified and OC to the teeth out of the water in multitasking. Just imagine you running custom rom and OC kernel with this baby. Not to be bias I did some search for a review and it rated almost 5 stars everywhere, here are a few links:

So it's not just me. Oh about the sdcard, my cousin, just use a mini USB to sdcard adapter ...may not look as pretty but pretty compact and does the job fine. Also it's not fair to compare an old hardware (ft700) to a new hardware (N10), but the fact it's definitely faster, better resolution and nicer to hold in my hand. Also the legginess possible from the Android JB 4.2.1 software, but not the N10 hardware. Once Google upgrade the software, you shouldn't see any lags anymore :good:

I agree with you to certain degrees BUT, The nexus offers little features compared to a Transformer. The Transformer is plenty for every day use. I would only say go with a NEXUS if you want to game hard core. If you want more battery life, storage expandability, and a physical keyboard docking, go with the infinity. If you want more of a toy for playing games on, go for the Nexus, yet as buhohitr said, the Tranformers is getting to be a year old so it is kinda outdated. In my personal opinion, technology advances every 6 months. New and better things become available and it is just how it is. BUT, I still love my transformer and WOULD NOT get rid of it due to the simply fact of the keyboard. Have you ever tried typing a paper or report on a touchscreen????

Not to debate with you because you're right too, but I want to give everyone some of my takes. I no longer use the keyboard dock came with the tf700, why? because it's awkward, flip over all the time, specially on my lap. I purchased a separate mini stand (7$) and wireless keyboard/mouse (40$) and found it's working much better, I can have the board on my lap and move around very nicely. Also another note is when you pickup the tf700 while it docked you have to be careful to hold it right otherwise you may break the hinges, but again even on a flat surface, this thing kept flipping over all the time when it's in a angle and I tried to touch and hold to move/copy. If anyone never try a real mouse with the tf700 you should, it much faster and a lot easier to navigate, specially when browsing, just scroll the wheel on the mouse and save your arm from getting tired.
No Nexus device will have MicroSD in the foreseeable future. AFAIK, it's a deliberate option by Google, and unless it's changed Nexus devices will rely on internal memory.
Forgive my ignorance, does the Nexus 10 have a USB connector? Could you plug in a microSD reader? I have one that's little larger than a thumbnail. Not perfect, but it would take care of your problem.
That said, feel free to get yourself an Infinity I know many people complain about its lagginess and whatnot. It depends on your expectations and what you do with it. I can only say I'm rooted, locked and on stock 4.2.1 and am still very enthusiastic about it.

As if.
These were the same reports that had a leaked image of the new Note 3( with the serial number I9500(Which is the SGS4) and turned out to be a midrange phablet called the ZOPO ZP950), claimed that the Galaxy Tab 3 would have 1920x1080 resolution (which has already been announced as having a crappy 1280x800 res.) and that the Galaxy S4 would feature a flexible display. (Which it doesn't.)
So I've had my Infinity + Dock for almost 10 months now. While performance is good we can all relate to the I/O issues and laggyness of the device.
So recently decided to grab the Nexus 7 to give it a whirl. Really want to try the new one, but could be a few months away and so want to try something else affordable. So with that now, I've had my Nexus for just over a week now. It really is a solid piece of equipment then comes to really the differences.
I'm sure this has been beaten to death but...

1920x1200 (so nice)
mini HDMI out (it is a nice feature)

Dock with more battery/SD Card slot
Very quick recharge of both tablet and dock.

Might have more plus's for the Infinity, but just weighing at least my needs the Nexus 7 almost seems better. At this point im sad to say I might sell my Infinity off. I like the device but ever since I've gotten my Nexus 7 I haven't really touched the tablet except for showing a movie on my TV (first time actually). And now in comparison to my Nexus 7, and seeing how badly my Infinity lags with commands its amazing why I never noticed it this much before.
Might try a few more things here before making a true decision of what to keep and what to get rid of.
What ever happens in the future I hope Asus's next product fix the dang I/O issues and get some good speed to internal memory.

I think you probably already know your answer to which tablet you want but looking for validation on it. Given you have found the 7'' to fit better in your hands and perform better for you, why keep the Infinity? You can buy a bt keyboard and external battery pack to give 1 or 2 extra charges if your out an about. You do lose the micro-SD slot but there are ways around storage limitations (cloud storage, usb card readers, wifi enabled external drives). If the tablet is not meeting your needs or expectations then move on. Sticking with it will leave the nagging lag issue in your mind and probably looking for it during use.
Since your manufacture warranty is almost up then you could try unlocking it for better performance.
Yeah I know. Just feel bad that a $250 tablet is crushing a $500 in performance using the same hardware and made by the same manufacture.

The n7 has a different version of the tegra 3, the cheaper version. The infinity has a new version and can go to 1.7Ghz.
But more Ghz don't mean more smoothness. Also the infinity has more pixels so it needs more power.
If I was you, I would keep the infinity if you don't go out often and the n7 if you do.

I actually debated what you are going through a few weeks ago and decided to sell my Infinity and Dock on eBay and keep my Nexus 7. I went out and bought a Logitech k810 (the typing experience is amazing and highly recommended) to replace my typing needs. I'll keep the Nexus 7 and wait until the next round of next generation 10 inch tablets are out, as nothing is really doing it for me at the moment, but liking the benchmark results that are coming out of the Tegra 4 and Snapdragon 800. Hopefully those live up to the benchmarks that we are seeing. I wouldn't mind going back with ASUS, but they seriously have to fix the I/O issues

That is ALL that IS really wrong with the infinity is the i/o. ASUS is stupid for not putting a better internal storage in this device. Actually, the N7 has newer parts than the Infinity, but newer does not always mean better. The only reason the N7 is so much smoother is the i/o, and ASUS is quite dumb for not putting a better internal storage in the Infinity. I am hoping for a new infinity, and if the i/o is not fixed, then I wont be going with it.

Yeah the I/O just became too frustrating to deal with, even with CROMI. Having come from the Prime, I was hoping that issue would have been fixed. There are a ton of things that ASUS did right but the /O issue is just too difficult to overcome and the Nexus 7 runs circles around it because of it. I'm hoping Computex brings us some new hardware, especially a new high end Transformer.

I used to own a Nexus 7. I traded up for the ATI. I am running disabled fsync and no data2sd and the experience feels the same as the Nexus 7 to me.
I love the ATI so much better. My 32gb GN7 was running low on storage. Now, I have 96gb in my ATI. It's great that I can add another 64gb SD in the future with the dock.
Having a real keyboard is awesome!
The 2nd battery is icing on the cake.

I have an Infinity and N7 as well. I try to make the N7 my main device, but i keep going back that big screen. I use my N7 for everything, except reading. I need my big screen to read my comics. Maybe i need glasses. But the N7 is so smooth. SOD is quite annoying. Even with cleanrom installed, my N7 is still more productive

I dont understand how with CromiX everyone is getting SOD. I havent gotten in SoD in months. Have you tried doing a fresh install timrock? Wiping everything including internal storage? and again installing CromiX?

plenty of times. i just spent a whole weekend clean installing it because of kernel issue. Just got an SOD about a half hour ago.
Well thankfully I have never gotten a SOD on the device. Actually first time I've heard of the term.
Now had anyone else gotten the issue where say you try to turn on the screen and it doesn't go on or delays so long it times out on you just to repeat it? I've been getting that a lot more lately.

My Nexus 7 feels much smoother than my TF700.
That being said, i've tried 2 different types of keyboards on the N7, bluetooth an wired (usb otg) and I keep coming back to the transformer.
The dock makes this device!
Since installing CromiX, i've found it a much better device.
I've now just removed a bunch of apps from startup and it is buzzing!
I can only tell from my own experience that:
1) IF you have a TF700 with perfect build quality
and 2) IF you are prepared to unlock
You will NOT be disappointed in this device.
However, it's also a question of how much you are willing to spend on a device. This one's nearly a year old
Maybe you could have a look at the Nexus 10, if that's available in your country?

i believe that the SOD (sleep of death). Example, you are done using the tab and you just put it to sleep (not turn it off), you press the button to wake it, and it doesnt wake up. At least not right away. It either takes a while to wake, or you end up having to reset it. This is what happens to me on occasions.

I've always blamed the TF700's lag on too little RAM. Glad to see the next version has double the memory.
I'll wish I had it, but fortunately there's CleanROM for mine.

I dont think RAM was really a big issue for the Infinity. What really needs fixed is the i/o. When folks start purchasing the new Transformer, and if it dont have better i/o, I will definitely probably go with a different tablet.

Have a link? I'll wait till the guys over at Ars give us a breakdown of the chip before getting too worried. I'm just worried about the I/O of the device. We've seen the benchmarks of Tegra 4 paired with a fast SSD in the reference tablet, so hopefully we see something similar.

Naturally they should update the dock over time but I thought they were moving toward a universal dock for their products? I'd hate to buy a new tablet and then have to buy a new keyboard dock.
It's not as if I can afford a new tablet, anyway.
(certainly not as I already intent to buy a Note 3.)

If the dock has a usb3.0 usb port and the bad I/O of the tf700 effects the data transfer speeds between devices via cable. Then wouldn't it make sense for the I/O in the new 2013 transformer to be improved in order to fully utalize the 3.0 speeds

MTP is slow to begin with, so it will make little difference there (my sgs3 takes just as long to copy a file).
And don't forget, ASUS is not officially acknowledging the I/O issue. I wonder if the R&D team even knows about it.

A lot of people are complaining that the new transformer pad is slacking (usb 3.0, 5mp back cam,ect..) but i think they are working to a sell resnably priced tablet rather then all the top tech and gizmos. If the rumor that it will sell roughly around 399$ for the tablet and 499$ for the full kitten kaboodle ASUS will earn some respect from me.
Just hope the dock for that I'd interchangeable with the current tf dock! So I could just buy the tablet itself
