[Q] How will CellPhone Providers know if you opened your phone? - General Questions and Answers

[Q] How will CellPhone Providers or Insurance companies know if you opened your phone?
To better clarify : I have the Samsung Galaxy S3 32gb Pebble Blue from T-Mobile. Long story short phone screen cracked.
I called my insurance company thats with T-Mobile Asurion and received 3 replacements.
1st replacement on 1.14.13 Monday
2nd replacement on 1.15.13 Tuesday
3rd replacement on 1.16.13 Wednesday
HERES THE JUICY PART
I'M 16 YEARS OLD AND HIGHLY TECH SAVVY AND IT SEEMS THEY WERE TRYING TO SCAM ME! ALL 3 WERE LABELED WITH 32 GB STICKERS WITH THE IMEI UNDER WHERE THE BATTERY IS PLACED ON THE BACK OF THE PHONE. BUT!!!! WHEN I TURNED THEM ON!!! ALL 3 SAID TOTAL INTERNAL SPACE IS!!!! 11.95 GB!!!!
So my question in had is If I swapped out the motherboards of the working screen and my broken screen. HOW will they know I did it BESIDES the DIFFERENT IMEI # from the Motherboard and the back label on the Phone.
Please help me out fellow member. I have 12 Days remaining to returns these devices before I have to pay a fee but, If you guys can give me a answer that allows me to swap screen and be free then I can do as you instruct and return the phones. Thanks again.

Broken Mini USB Port On Fuze

I have had my Fuze just under 4 months.
This past weekend I noticed the mini-USB port at the bottom of the phone was cracked. I'm talking about the plastic "tongue" with the 5 or 6 metal connectors on it (the part the charging cable connects to).
At first I was un-able to connect my charger to the phone, but after using a knife to move the tongue back to where it is supposed to be I was able to connect it.
However, it's only a matter of time before it breaks off and I will no longer be able to charge my phone. I did not purchase insurance.
I called AT&T and they told me that it is considered "physical damage" and therefore not covered under their warranty.
They referred me to HTC who gave me the same BS.
I see it as a manufacturer defect. I did not abuse the phone. HTC designed it. I can only charge it using the equipment they supplied with the phone. Apparently, 4 months of connecting and dis-connecting the charging cable is too much for the phone to handle! Of course, it is a cheap, $400 phone. What did I expect?
HTC told me I can send it to them and they will examine it. If they see fit to repair it, they will. If not, it will cost over $300 to fix it. Either way I will have to pay $35 just for them to look at it.
Has this happened to anyone else?
So my options as I see them are:
1. Return the phone to HTC and prey.
2. Purchase insurance from a third party and wait a few weeks to report the damage (and hope it lasts that long!).
3. Cancel my AT&T account (all of them, inc. my land line and DSL) and go to Verizon. I wanted an Omnia anyway. (This would be subject to getting an acceptable signal at home, something that I cannot do with AT&T).
It will cost me $180 to leave AT&T, but that is cheaper than paying over $300 to fix the phone!
I just bought a Fuze 2 weeks ago for $220 on craigslist. Screen has a MINOR scratch, thus the low price. My girlfriend bought her Fuze 3 days ago for $275 in absolute perfect condition. Both of our phones came with everything that came in the box and mine even had the original box. If you look on craigslist, you can find amazing deals. Me and my girlfriend were looking for about 3 weeks though, checking about twice a day for new posts.
This way, you spend less than the repair, and you have your original phone as backup/parts phone. You also don't have to wait as you pick the phone up yourself locally. Just never go alone, meet INSIDE a restaurant or store. I've never had bad experiences on craigslist, luckily. So far, I've bought 17" rims, 2 160GB HDDs, 4 80GB SATA HDDs, AMD Athlon x2 3800+ (for $20!!!), a complete watercooling kit for my PC, a palm treo 750w, a palm centro, an HTC Hermes, and now 2 HTC Fuzes. I make sure that the phones work perfect, check all the buttons, insert my sim card, make a phone call, etc.
I cooked my own quick little rom and the Fuze runs AMAZING compared to about 5 other roms I've tried on here, so don't give up on the phone, it has potential!
My suggestion would by to try a different approach with calling att support. Tell them the phone is not charging, will not sync, etc. Tell them you dont see any sign of physical damage and you have never dropped the phone or submerged it in water, etc. After about 5 minutes of scripted troubleshooting they should be making arrangements to send you a new phone. FYI they have a 1 year warranty on their phones. Obviously you don't want them to think you may have damaged it in any way. Best of luck!
Thanks sethstejskal, but no go.
They typed "notes" in my account saying I had already told them the port was cracked.
They also told me their "powerless" if I choose to cancel my service. The have no authority to replace my phone due to the "physical damage".
I am amazed that my 9+ years as a customer means less than a $400 phone.
Zoskalon, your suggestion would bring the cost of my Fuze to about $650 (inc. original purchase price). At that price they should throw in a blow job.
my friend had a treo on verizon that wouldn't charge. he just bought another battery and an external charger. i think that's your best bet, as long as you don't use the usb port for data transfer or internet sharing :\

I wonder if calling the ATT warranty number would yield different results than the standard customer service line. With a different department/building/computer system maybe they don't share notes interdepartmentally. I know its not terribly helpful but its better than getting the royal shaft if it works.
Sorry to resurrect this old thread but I had same problem with EXACTLY the same experience with AT&T and HTC. How did you resolve this issue?
I hope to resolve it in a couple of months. I'm just waiting for user reports on the DROID. Even though I'll still have one year remaining on my "contract" with AT&T and will have to pay around $120, I'm leaning toward switching to Verizon.
Believe it or not, my story actually got worse. I limped along with my broken Fuze, then took it to Europe where I lost it. I had purchased "insurance" for it, and was told it only was only covered in the US! (This was not through AT&T).
I asked AT&T for a deal on purchasing it again, and the best they could offer was, get this, a refurbished unit for $50 MORE than they had sold me the new one for!!!
I ended up buying a refurbished one on EBay for $200.
Presently I am so disgusted with the increase in dropped calls, plus the fact that I barely get a signal in my apartment ever since AT&T took over Cingular. I was considering buying their femtocel, as ridicules as that is to pay $150 for a device just so I can get a signal from the company with MORE BARS, but they're not even selling that in L.A. yet.
so if the reports on the Droid live up to the hype, I'll try out Verizon for 30 days. I'm hopeful that will "resolve" the issue.
well, if you have a broken port on your phone
1) you can't sync
2) you can't charge
3) you can't use those adapters
Solution
1) wifi/microSD card ... more complicated, but still usable
2) get a desktop cradle with battery charging... more complicated to charge, and need to physically change batteries, but still usable
3) bluetooth headphones?

4) Keep your mouth shut and stop complaining.
5) Give your money to any other company besides AT&T.
Of these I believe #5 is the only one AT&T will understand.

[Q] Asurion s3 replacement. Is it too good to be true?

In short:
Broken s3, dropped with shattered screen, then the s3 sudden death syndrome so a device that 100% refuses to even acknowledge a charger plugged in via the wall.
Go to the website and file a claim.
Device has cosmetic damage, I give reason as "dropped phone" and moments later and told tomorrow i will get:
1. A new device
2. New battery
3. New factory charger
Called them to confirm this and a call center person (Indian sounded like) tells me:
1. The device is factory new, I ask and no it isn't refurbished.
2. It comes we whatever a factory new s3 comes with (sim card, charger, headphones)
3. It will be here tomorrow.
Edit: I can keep the old battery and back as well. So I ask "okay ill have two batteries now and two back case parts?"
Yes, he confirms...
So what? Did these guys lie their asses off to me and I can expect to get hosed tomorrow?
Or is there a chance they aren't as bad as people say now a days?
Well i guess we'll find out tomorrow

Sounds legit to me as someone who works on the selling end. Did they charge you a $100 deductible?

My wife is on her 3rd gs3 assurion gave her a new battery, back cover, sim card and charger each time with the phone. No headphones, and the only thing we sent back was the main phone itself, not the battery or cover and the replacements arrived within 24 his of claim. It was great service.
I will be using asurion soon myself. Not for my phone but for my daughter's. She cracked the screen the 2nd day she had it. The worst part is I didn't pay anything for the phone but I have to pay 50 for the deductible

Yessiree, $99.00... No tax.
I won't expect headphones but I was pretty much expecting to get screwed with all the horror stories I had read of used phones with third party parts coming back to people.
Actually verizon forced the insurance on me.
Last year I had five phones that were faulty.
On the month after the manufacturers warranty I had a screen that wouldn't light up on an htc Incredible2.
I elevated the complaint to verizon corporate and they gave me an s3 for the new contract price but said Insurance was mandatory as part of their compromise (wasn't upgrade eligible for 11 months.
So the verizon corporate relations person told me asurion sends new devices back in august when that transaction happened and it seems he was right.
ONE WORD OF CAUTION
If your damage happens over 30 days ago, just tell asurion it happened yesterday or today.
A verizon rep told me that asurion will deny claims with old damage but you can tell them anything you want to as to when it was broken.
Mine broke in January, then sudden death two weeks ago.
This isn't fraud in my eyes. I'm sending the broken one back.
Just as others have said I was told to send a shell of the phone. Anything that can be removed without a screwdriver I keep (sim card, sd card, original battery, back cover) ...

Of course you are really are paying for it with the deductible and the monthly fee. and no matter what assurion assures you of , you are getting refurb stuff, THey sent me 3 "new" phones before I finally got one that lasted for more than 2 days without rebooting on its own or failing entirely

[Q] mobileshop.eu or merimobiles.com

Hi,
I am looking to buy a high end dual sim branded phone.
I ended up with either htc one e8 dual sim or lg g3 dual sim.
I ended up on mobileshop.eu or merimobiles.com which have lg g3 dual sim. (merimobiles has it 100eur cheaper but I read a lot of bad reviews about them)
The reason I ended up on these two is because both confirmed shipping is from EU therefore and I will not have to pay additional tax and I cannot find any other shop selling either phone from EU.
Does anyone have any experience from either shops or can suggest any other shop selling any of those two phones from EU and sealed in box.
Thanks!!
no one has any ideas? I would really appreciate any help
I ended up buying the LG G3 (D858HK) dual sim 16GB from mobileshop.eu, they are from EU and ship to EU countries only.
I am very happy with it, I had ordered it during the weekend, on Monday it was shipped and on Wednesday morning it was in my hands.
How was your overall experience with mobileshop.eu? As I have read some bad things about them and I've seen a youtube video of a guy who says that they sell second hand phones with signs of us!
### MOBILESHOP.EU are CROOKS ###
Warranty refused
Refund refused
no money no phone,
I bought my SM-N9100 2015, the
box seal was broken.
After few monthes the autofocus stopped working. I sent the phone in for repair.
2 weeks later it came back un-repaired.
I sent the phone in again.
They couldn't fix it, and they don't want to refund/exchange either
So it looks like I lost my €661
Merimobiles.com - a shop to avoid
I got a phone Huawei Honor 6 5" 4G LTE 32GB on 21-th december.
I visualy checked it at reception and looked very fine.
When I offered it to my wife as Christmas present, we found out in the same day, after removing the protections foil from the back, that the back cover was unsoldering from the main body.
So instead of being firmly attached, the back cover , was completely loose at his right side.
We liked the phone but it seems like we got a Huawei cheap scrap and are very dissapointed.
How is it possible to get such a crap at 255 $ phone?
I sent the phone back to merimoblies.com on December 30 th 2015 asking for refund.
After almost two and half months I got refunded 181.53 $.
I payed for the phone 238.96 $ and for extended guaranteee 8.49 $ ( plus 18 $ the DHL shipping and also got a 10$ discount) , so I got stoled of 55.92 $.
Nobody gave me any explanation and they hardly answered to my repeted emails. Finally they passes responsability from one to another departaments, sending me from technical to sales departament.
I repet, I returned a new mobile phone exactly as was shipped to me, exactly in the same condition as I got it - with the backcover unsoldered.
They post products on their shop without having on the stock and is nowhere mention Out of Stock. Weeks after you buy and pay, they inform you that the item is out of stock. Even if they refund you, you still loose money because of the Paypal conversion. At every shopping they refund , I lost about 10-15 $ i my personal account.
One more very important thing: they delete any negative comment from their shop, so don't look for negative reviews because you won't find it.
There are probably hundreds of customers in the same situation but you won't find their comments there.
Thank you merimobiles.com but never again.
Mobileshop.eu
Don't ever buy a phone from mobileshop.eu. I bought a Huawei p9 dual sim global version, but they sent me a unsealed china version instead. I tried for over 3 weeks to get them to take it back, but unsuccesful.

Cracked screen

Hello, so my situation is I just dropped my OPO two days ago and the screen is cracked and phone unusable (I am using my Galaxy SII skyrocket as a backup but it's pretty slow/can't handle much even even with Liquid smooth running on it). My OPO turns on and all but touch screen doesn't work. Anyways with the OnePlus Two supposedly coming out soon do you think I should wait and just buy that phone or should I pay to get my screen fixed or send it into insurance for a replacement and pay the $100 dollar deductible and they would send me a comparable replacement in this case she said the HTC One M8 and then I send them my phone after I receive the device from them. I don't know what the quality is of Asurion insurance replacement phones, I just assume that they were other peoples devices that were sent in and then "fixed up" by someone there. Also I looked here around town and the one place quoted me at $189 for the repair and that they don't stock the parts for the phone and so there a special order and it would take a few days for parts to arrive., I also checked at another place but they haven't responded back to me yet. So any ideas on what my best option is
1: Send it into Asurion pay $100 deductible and receive a One M8 or possbily Galaxy S5 if I ask for that one and they have one in stock (quality of there devices?)
2: pay a local repair shop to fix the screen (only quote as of this post was for $189) Edit I was also just quoted 135+Tax by another shop and again special order parts so it could take anywhere from a couple of days to a week or so for parts to arrive
3: Keep the device and just buy/wait for the OnePlus two and then sell this one for like 125-175 bucks on Swappa's Boneyard (Right now I see a 16GB model with cracked screen for sale at $150 on there and mines the 64 GB model but would need to figure out how to wipe the device 100% then if I do as the screen is unusable)

Issue at a T-Mobile Store

Ive been in multiple stores to replace my T-Mobile S7 but the guys keep giving me a hard time to do so. I dont have insurance on the phone, Ive had poor battery life and bad pixel burn in as my issues they say it can be replaced they just keep pushing me away from doing so. Im the customer and I just want a replacement. I havent had this issue until the whole Note 7 fiasco. Let me know if you guys expierence similar issues...
You have to go through Samsung. Unless the devices 15 days or fewer from the time you purchased it from T-Mobile they ain't going to do anything.

Imagine that. They have had to replace so many "flagship devices" that its on backorder even though it has been out for like 6 months.
They actually sold a lot of s7 devices and s7 edge due to the replacement of note 7 models and as well promotions recently where they bought one s7, got one free.

If you are outside of the 15days and dont have insurance then it's not T-Mobile place to replace contact Samsung. Next time just pay the exter for insurance can't get mad at them for following rules and your lack of common sense since you got a 700$ device with no insurance

They are giving me a refurbished model for $20 , he actually said that I have once chance to purchase insurance, I declined and he gave me no issues with replacement... He also told me it was funny that they are on backorder though he heard that Samsung is focusing production on them. I also asked if they are the people to go to in this situation, he said and I didn't even know "the phone has a 1 year warranty". I completely forgot and I didn't know that they covers stolen devices and other damage other than cracks and water.

That's actually 100% false. T-Mobile gives you a 1 year warranty with the device, and calling tech support will get you a replacement for $20, or $5 if you have jump/insurance. (Jump/Insurance also keeps the warranty going past 1 year)

You're the one without common sense. The 15 day rule is if you aren't happy with the phone... That could be because it's defective, or you don't like it. Your carrier still provides a 1 year warranty. I've been in to stores 11, 6,5 months after purchase with a truly defective phone and the carrier replaced it every time. My store has a service center and it probably has to be a corporate store. Without one you need to call your carrier. They won't give you a new phone off the sales floor shelf (unless within 15 days) they have stock specifically for warranty exchange, most of the time they are factory refurbs, sometimes new, yet I could never tell the difference . They might not have it in stock but will order it. Normally you can pay $20 extra for overnight shipping (AT&T) Most recently was only exception as far as in store replacement . My s7 edge had a messed up home button. Also had a scratch on the screen. Local store said Samsung would probably reject the warranty due to the scratch. I left, called 611 and had a new phone the next day.
Edit: I've experienced this with 2 carriers, AT&T and Sprint. Both corporate stores. Joe Blow who has a franchise store wont replace it. The franchise store told me the same old BS that i had to call manufacturer (samsung) Calling your carrier seems to be the easiest way in most cases.

If you bought the phone 2nd hand, will they still replace it under warranty?
