[Q] Asurion s3 replacement. Is it too good to be true? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

In short:
Broken s3, dropped with shattered screen, then the s3 sudden death syndrome so a device that 100% refuses to even acknowledge a charger plugged in via the wall.
Go to the website and file a claim.
Device has cosmetic damage, I give reason as "dropped phone" and moments later and told tomorrow i will get:
1. A new device
2. New battery
3. New factory charger
Called them to confirm this and a call center person (Indian sounded like) tells me:
1. The device is factory new, I ask and no it isn't refurbished.
2. It comes we whatever a factory new s3 comes with (sim card, charger, headphones)
3. It will be here tomorrow.
Edit: I can keep the old battery and back as well. So I ask "okay ill have two batteries now and two back case parts?"
Yes, he confirms...
So what? Did these guys lie their asses off to me and I can expect to get hosed tomorrow?
Or is there a chance they aren't as bad as people say now a days?

Well i guess we'll find out tomorrow

Sounds legit to me as someone who works on the selling end. Did they charge you a $100 deductible?

My wife is on her 3rd gs3 assurion gave her a new battery, back cover, sim card and charger each time with the phone. No headphones, and the only thing we sent back was the main phone itself, not the battery or cover and the replacements arrived within 24 his of claim. It was great service.

I will be using asurion soon myself. Not for my phone but for my daughter's. She cracked the screen the 2nd day she had it. The worst part is I didn't pay anything for the phone but I have to pay 50 for the deductible

Yessiree, $99.00... No tax.
I won't expect headphones but I was pretty much expecting to get screwed with all the horror stories I had read of used phones with third party parts coming back to people.
Actually verizon forced the insurance on me.
Last year I had five phones that were faulty.
On the month after the manufacturers warranty I had a screen that wouldn't light up on an htc Incredible2.
I elevated the complaint to verizon corporate and they gave me an s3 for the new contract price but said Insurance was mandatory as part of their compromise (wasn't upgrade eligible for 11 months.
So the verizon corporate relations person told me asurion sends new devices back in august when that transaction happened and it seems he was right.
ONE WORD OF CAUTION
If your damage happens over 30 days ago, just tell asurion it happened yesterday or today.
A verizon rep told me that asurion will deny claims with old damage but you can tell them anything you want to as to when it was broken.
Mine broke in January, then sudden death two weeks ago.
This isn't fraud in my eyes. I'm sending the broken one back.
Just as others have said I was told to send a shell of the phone. Anything that can be removed without a screwdriver I keep (sim card, sd card, original battery, back cover) ...

Of course you are really are paying for it with the deductible and the monthly fee. and no matter what assurion assures you of , you are getting refurb stuff, THey sent me 3 "new" phones before I finally got one that lasted for more than 2 days without rebooting on its own or failing entirely

Cellhub anyone?

Has anyone in here ever deal with cellhub when buying ur G2X?
They have the phone on sale for $69.99 and I'm looking at a possible buy here if they r legit.
Ur input will b great appreciated.

They are scum of the earth!
Basically I went through 2 G2X's with them. It wouldn't have been so bad where it not the fact that it took about a week to ship the phone to them and get it back and by the second one, I was worried that I may not want to keep the T-Mobile service so I just gave up and decided to buy locally. The problem was that Cellhub wanted a restocking fee for the SECOND defective phone of $25, then they charged me $10 for the pleasure of having to send the brick of a phone back, AND I had to pay for shipping($15). So dealing with that much hassle with Cellhub on a phone that is known to be defective (Come on, we all know this, the issues this phone has given me led me here) is just not worth the "savings" you'd get. I wasted $50 on literally nothing thanks to cellhub. A week later I went to a local T-Mobile store and it looked like Cellhub somehow screwed me over with Tmobile and I wasn't allowed to get the phone for the upgrade price. So if I wanted it at the store it would have cost me full price! Basically Cellhub was trying to blacklist me with T-Mobile. T-Mobile was great and we cleared it up (seriously, best Customer service for cell phones, I really hope At&t is denied to purchase them), but it soured me from ever buying from cellhub or even hinting at someone to buy it from there. If I could prevent one person from going through the hell I went through, I will be more then happy to write my story down.
I just placed my order.Let's c what kind of dirt they give me.If phone don't get shipped out today I'm cancelling my order.

My experience has been fine. They have done everything they've said for me.
They sent me my first return w/no problems. The 2nd return, they deferred to T mobile. But he was nice about it, explaining that that is the process. He made sure I had no questions. Also made it a point to tell me to get back to them if I had any problems with the 2nd return. The credit for the free activation won't show for three months or so.
I did have to pay for next day both ways, but that was my idea and my decision. They were gonna send it 2 day. I had a loaner from T mobile that was crap and did not want to wait a week.
I'm not sorry I went through them myself. I would do it again. They are selling this phone for a good price. I always get a real person quickly, which I love. It isn't their fault I've had problems. My daughters G2X is problem free.
It must suck to be an authorized G2X DEALER right now. There sure are a lot of returns.......never mind the standard BS that is sorta inevitable. But I can personally recommend cellhub. Of course I try to be uber friendly and respectful. You definately get what you give.

So far so good. We'll when the phone arrives.
If you get a working phone CellHub would appear to be great. But a TRUE measure of a company is how they handle returns. I had a defective Core i7 980x (a $1,000 processor mind you) and Newegg did a cross ship without charging me on the new one sent in, all I had to do was send in the defective CPU. The whole process took 2 days and I recieved a return shipping label for the defective product. THATS how you handle returns. Cellhub is a joke by comparison. A true measure of an online store is how they handle returns, not sales. Cellhub is not there for you after the sale, so I would avoid them.
Cellhub vs Newegg is not a good comparison, because Newegg offered ****ty customer service when it first started too, only until a few years ago they got a lot better in order to compete with amazon's customer service.
I bought my G2x from cellhub they are okay. I was very lucky to be one of the few to receive a non-defective unit. So hopefully you will get a non-defective device. But since G2x has so many quality control problems I would not have bought it from cellhub because if anything is wrong with it you would have a headache with the return (any online retailer that is). I would have suggested you to get it a local tmobile store because you can drive to the store and ***** at them versus an online retailer you cant really do that much.
I ordered 2 cell phones from Cellhub about 6 years ago. First issue was that I was switching carriers and porting my number. I was assured that my old phone would work until I got the phone and had it switched myself. Not so, the numbers were switched immediately before the phones shipped and my wife and I had no phone service until our phones came in over a week later. One phone was fine for 2 years until we quit using it. The other was an obvious refurb that they honored with the 1 year warranty, but I had to send it in for repair through whatever service they used. I had to send it in twice times for different issues. First was it stopped installing anything I had bought and downloaded, which I dealt with until the bluetooth stopped working. After that the screen died. Then 3 days after my warranty expired the keys quit working and I was out of luck. They wouldn't do anything about it even though it was obvious there were issues with the phone before and I had sent it in twice before for a couple weeks each time. Not that I expected that they would do anything even though it was three days, but it did guarantee I will never go back.
Hope your experience is better and that they have improved since then.
They haven't...

Well, I knew what the return terms were when I bought them. I made sure to check the return policy. So the return shipping, while I see your point, wasn't really an issue for me.
I'm more concerned with how much of a fight it is to make the return. They exchanged the first one quickly and with no hassles.
I knew that going mail order was a bit risky. But as I said, I've been pleased with cellhub. From my experiences with them, they've been very helpful and professional.

So you wanted to exchange a defective phone and Cellhub wanted to charge you $25. restocking, fee, $15.00 shipping, AND $10.00 (for what?) for a total of $50.00 for an exchange.....for a defective phone....that was still under warranty?? Boy, I'd be pissed off.
Hence my hatered of cellhub, I spent $50 on nothing. I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau in long island against them. Cellhub is pure scum.Avoid!!!!

Anyone done an Asurion claim?

I know that tmobile isn't really doing swaps for the g2x, I'm not sure if they even have them in stock, some people have said they've had to get the mytouch 4g. Does anyone know if asurion have them available?
They have them available for warranty exchanges, it appears... I just got my replacement in the mail today(3 days after ordering the replacement) after being told it may be a two week wait. What problems are you experiencing with your G2x?
The only reason you should make a claim with Asurion is if you've lost or broken your phone. The deductible, itself, should be enough to warn most people of that.
It has a cracked screen
I got a replacement G2X through Asurion when I got my original stolen. I actually got the phone in 2 days and it works great. The phone is refurbished, but you won't be able to tell. There are no scratches or physical signs of wear and tear. They have the G2Xs in stock.
This was my first time using my insurance plan, but I'm glad I did now. You shouldn't be dissappointed. The deductible was $130 though.....beats buying a new phone at outright though.
Hope this helps!
I had no hassles with Asurion. My wife left her phone on a cab in Vegas. Filed a claim from the airport and got a replacement the next day.
The replacement they sent was a bit flakey, and the vibration motor made a kind of grinding noise. When i called them and explained the problems, they drop shipped me a second replacement with a return label. We had it the next day and the second one is as good as new.

What happens in Vegas...
I also had no problem through Asurion on the G2X, got a new phone though ( killed the G2X with water)
Yeah, Vegas is why I will always buy phone insurance from now on - I'd never lost or broken a phone priorly.
A word of caution, if you're ever in vegas and feel like passing out before everyone else, be sure your buddy isn't planning to bring a hooker to the room, you will be out a phone come morning.
Lol...brings back memories lol

G2x Insurance experience

So, Just though I'd let you all know about what happens if you ever have your phone stolen.
So a few weeks ago my house got broke into and stole all of our electronics, and among those stolen was my G2x, after a police report and some time on the phone with the phone insurance company they were very quick on approving my claim and getting my phone out to me.
I asked the rep "Will the replacement phone be re-manufactured or brand new?" The rep replied "We have no way of knowing what is sent out, it all comes from T-Mobiles warehouse."
I didn't think anything more about it and paid my deductible of $130.00. Now keep in mind I have ALWAYS had insurance on my phone since 2006.
So after paying $5.00 a month for 5 years over $300, and then paying $130.00 so $430.00 for a replacement phone. I was excited to see the UPS guy deliver me a phone and went into tearing it open... only to see that it was a re-manufactured for with;
Scratches on the glass screen
dents and dings all over the sides of the phone
wear and tear near the charging port
wear damage on the back case where the phone has been laid down a lot
and the phone wouldn't even TURN ON! (I put the battery in and let it charge for 25 minutes before attempting)
SO after all of this I went and gave T-Mobile/insurance company a call and the rep stated "All of our re-manned phones have the plastic, glass replaced, and software reformatted on the phone before shipout, we have a strong 150 point inspection where we lay a brand new phone next to a re-manned and see if we can tell the difference" then they're shipped out.
Well I can DEFINITELY see the difference, I called again and am having them send me out another one to replace the one i replaced, I asked if they could please request a BRAND NEW one and they said "We can't guarantee its going to be new, but if there are any issues please call us back and we'll replace".
I'm very frustrated because i'm almost positive i'll end up getting ANOTHER re-manned with issues.
correct me if i'm wrong, if you pay for car insurance and you're in an auto accident, they fix the car to NEW standards, if you have home owners insurance and you brake a window, door, a/c unit etc, they dont send you a USED window, door, a/c unit, its all NEW. If you have health insurance they use NEW products on your body not ones that have already been used.
WHY the hell would a phone be any different?!!?!?
Just an FYI and a little venting If you're the type of person who loses their phones, drops it, water damage etc, its probably good to have insurance, if you're like me and wont use it for years at a time, don't waste your money, just buy a brand new one.. it will save you the hassle...
Thanks for letting me vent.

I see why your frustrated, but having a remanufactured phone isn't so bad. The reason why I say that is because they are gonna do there honest best to try and fix the known issues that 90% of the G2x owners are experiencing. I just gotten a remanufactured phone and I can honestly say I have no screen bleeding issues at all! I also have no scratches either! Although I do understand your frustration about paying monthly on insurance and getting a used phone.

I just received my phone from asurion 2 days ago, and I have no problems like the ones you mentioned. The casing is in immaculate shape, and there are no scratches anywhere. It even has a couple of the adhesives still on there. The only problem I did have with it, is that it has a bit more light bleed than my original one had.

You should not be able to tell the difference between reman and brand new from Asurion. If you can you definitely have a right to complain. I wouldn't worry about the second phone being in bad shape too, that must be a total fluke. As far as how much premium you have spent on insurance since whenever date, all that is irrelevant. You should receive the same level of indemnity as the guy who signed up for his policy 6 months ago. Some people pay their whole lives and never need to make a claim. Insurance is simply peace of mind. The insurance company bears the majority of risk when they write policies. You pay a tiny amount monthly and they will give you a $500 phone for $130 any time you jack your **** up. You burn through 2 insurance replacements and Asurion has lost money most likely writing your policy.
Anyway, you have a right to ***** about them sending you a messed up refurb, and they have a responsibility to make it right. Good luck.

I've only had 1 insurance replacement with a Behold back in the day and it looked brand new! So I think they shipped you the wrong phone!
....
I'd say get another replacement. They weren't lying when they told you about their QC procedure; your example is simply one that got overlooked. A mistake, an exception. Something that almost certainly won't happen again.
I had T-Mobile since voicestream and Asurion since it they got with T-Mobile and after loosing my phone and my wife hers years after I did I've never had that happen .....my question is y even put a battery in and chrage it if there was damage on the phone already I woukdbif just saw it packed it right up and called Asurion .......I even had them replace me my nexus one after I dropped it and broke it and I bought that from Google not from T-Mobile ........

Assurion Insurance for SIII

I was wondering what would your opinion be on this for the SIII, its my first time with a contract, before i just traded phones, but i bought insurance just incase something happens and the duductible isnt all that bad! just wondering if they are a good company all together and worth it for my S3 incase it breaks!
Yes well worth it

God bless the American people.
For me I personally do not believe in the whole insurance/warranty services. Examples being Asurion (Insurance) and SquareTrade (Warranty). Also to me carrier warranties are also bull.
Asurion $7/month $99 Deductible
Covers damage/lost device
SquareTrade $7/month ($125 2 years) $99 Deductible
Only covers repairs not lost device.
Manufacturers Warranty
12 Months FREE covers any manufacturers defects
For me why would I pay $125-175 + $99 if anything happens to my phone. So I am looking at $2-300 dollars if anything breaks or I lose my device. For that price I will take the risk. If my screen breaks I will use $50 to replace myself or pay a shop $80 or a $99 deductible. Mechanical problems with antennae/physical buttons I will pay a shop $120 to fix it or a $99 deductible. Did I lose my phone on the beach? Guess I will have to buy a generation behind, and get a used device on craigslist for $2-300 or a $99 Deductible.
Either way you are paying 2 years of insurance, and a deductible. You are better off just saving your money, and buying a decent slim case like a UAG. Unless you plan on regularly losing your device, and running it over repeatedly (to which I would assume they limit) then do not fall for the scam of insurance for your cell phone.
The way I see it if it does not fail within the first year the manufacturer made it just fine, and with normal use my phone will last me just fine. I would rather keep my $300 on hand in worst case scenario than give my money to another company.
Yeah if you're a pro that works for the usually rookie to android's world it wouldn't. Not everyone can do it all like you and I. That's why I recommend coverage . I've already replaced mine three times and haven't spent a penny... If you brick it on purpose they won't charge you anything... Just saying

2 replacements a year
i believe assurion limits you to 2 replacements in a 12 month period...
I go with best buy and never had a problem . Yes I know I'm paying 10 bucks a month, but to me that's better than paying some shaddy phone repair shop. I already have used them one time since I got the phone because I some how bent one of the usb pens. The repair process was fast and easy only had to drop the phone off and pick it up .

Asurion limits you to 2 replacements for physical damage/theft/lost although you can get unlimited warranty replacements. IMO it's worth it for the warranty portion alone. If you're not worried about losing it or physically damaging it, just pay the $1.99 per month for the extended warranty. If something goes wrong with your phone after 12 months you're SOL whereas if you at least have the $1.99 you can get a cert-replacement.
I usually tell people to use either insurance or extended warranty for 20 months, after that you can drop it off your plan since at that point you'll be eligible for renewal.
I hard bricked my phone. Told asurion it was lost. Paid $99. Not rooting the replacement. If you play with ROMS it's worth the money.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
If you're messing around with your phone a lot and somewhat of butterfingers like me , get insurance!
I cover all my electronics with SquareTrade; reliable and cheaper.
Personally I have signed up for the insurance, and have gotten good use of it as well. Yes, you can find a used on on CL or ebay, but you dont know the condition of it.
Plus they overnight you a new phone as soon as you make the claim, and are not tied to finding the best "deal" in short notice. Once you are out of contract and IF you keep your phone (dont upgrade right away), I might consider getting rid of the coverage.
How about the replacement phones? what are the chances of getting a new device? and chances of choosing a different device? and customer service
I had my phone a month. It was rooted with another rom in it. I got drunk at my birthday party and had the phone in my swimming trunks pocket all day. I forgot it was there and I jumped in my pool that evening. After about 5-10 min I realized what I'd done. I used rice to help dry it out over a couple days. It would power up but the screen would not come up. I was able to Odin it back to stock and sent it in to Assurion. No questions asked what so ever on the replacement.

I had to file a claim this past November and was sent a new in box S3! I doubt that is typical though.
My kid did a number on my wifes phone the casing was cracked all the way around, took about 5 minutes online at 7pm last Friday night, by 1245pm the next day, Saturday. Brand new phone, SIM, and battery. It was well worth it.

Assurion sucks!! Takes 3 days to arrive, ALWAYS REFURBISHED! Covers everything but cheaper alternatives exist. If your not prone to losing your phone, get a zagg, otter box and don't waste your 7 bucks a month PLUS 130 dollar deductible.

How about the replacement phones? what are the chances of getting a new device? and chances of choosing a different device? and customer service

Zero chance of getting a new device and not a chance of picking a new one. I used to work for them.

Asurion is absolutely amazing. Their customer service is great and they're fast, easy, and helpful. I was visiting my friend who goes to a different college a few hours away and i lost my phone at some party. i waited a couple days in case it was found....which it wasnt. I called up Asurion and told them everything that happened, I filed for a claim and the next morning they said they would be able to send out a new phone and all I had to pay was the deductible. I got the phone within 48 hours, so I DEFINITELY recommend Asurion, they literally cover ANTYHING, whether it's water damage, broken, or even if you lost it.
and i know many people are thinking that they could just CLAIM that it's lost and get a new one by paying just the deductible. noooo that is not possible (at least i dont think...), because you have to provide your imei number, so they can block it from being used
I've had nothing but good experiences. I have 5 lines and have used them for insurance for at least 5 years. I've had to make at least 2 claims a year (well I've never had to but for the other 4 lines) and I've always had great customer support, overnight delivery and a new phone. The only time I've had a "problem" is when they didn't have a Inc2 in stock and they sent my wife a DROID RAZR.

I had a bad experience with them just a couple months ago and posted a thread about it here you could search for. They basically said it would be a week or two before they could send me ANY replacement at all - they gave me zero options to choose from after telling me they were out of the S3. After a few calls and couple hours of threatening them, they finally offered to reimburse me if I went out and bought a brand new one. Decent result, but really had to fight for it and took a lot of hassle (and I definitely started off politely asking for any options aside simply waiting for a couple weeks without a phone).
Key word: Refurbished.

Issue at a T-Mobile Store

Ive been in multiple stores to replace my T-Mobile S7 but the guys keep giving me a hard time to do so. I dont have insurance on the phone, Ive had poor battery life and bad pixel burn in as my issues they say it can be replaced they just keep pushing me away from doing so. Im the customer and I just want a replacement. I havent had this issue until the whole Note 7 fiasco. Let me know if you guys expierence similar issues...
You have to go through Samsung. Unless the devices 15 days or fewer from the time you purchased it from T-Mobile they ain't going to do anything.

I'm having problems with my phone and battery life since the update. Talked to the T-Mobile Rep on facebook. They sent a replacement S7 to my house within 20 minutes, no problem at all.

I just spoke to someone at a T-mobile store , he ordered a replacement for me, it's just on backorder so I have to wait a week to pick it up at a store.

Imagine that. They have had to replace so many "flagship devices" that its on backorder even though it has been out for like 6 months.
They actually sold a lot of s7 devices and s7 edge due to the replacement of note 7 models and as well promotions recently where they bought one s7, got one free.

If you are outside of the 15days and dont have insurance then it's not T-Mobile place to replace contact Samsung. Next time just pay the exter for insurance can't get mad at them for following rules and your lack of common sense since you got a 700$ device with no insurance

They are giving me a refurbished model for $20 , he actually said that I have once chance to purchase insurance, I declined and he gave me no issues with replacement... He also told me it was funny that they are on backorder though he heard that Samsung is focusing production on them. I also asked if they are the people to go to in this situation, he said and I didn't even know "the phone has a 1 year warranty". I completely forgot and I didn't know that they covers stolen devices and other damage other than cracks and water.

That's actually 100% false. T-Mobile gives you a 1 year warranty with the device, and calling tech support will get you a replacement for $20, or $5 if you have jump/insurance. (Jump/Insurance also keeps the warranty going past 1 year)

You're the one without common sense. The 15 day rule is if you aren't happy with the phone... That could be because it's defective, or you don't like it. Your carrier still provides a 1 year warranty. I've been in to stores 11, 6,5 months after purchase with a truly defective phone and the carrier replaced it every time. My store has a service center and it probably has to be a corporate store. Without one you need to call your carrier. They won't give you a new phone off the sales floor shelf (unless within 15 days) they have stock specifically for warranty exchange, most of the time they are factory refurbs, sometimes new, yet I could never tell the difference . They might not have it in stock but will order it. Normally you can pay $20 extra for overnight shipping (AT&T) Most recently was only exception as far as in store replacement . My s7 edge had a messed up home button. Also had a scratch on the screen. Local store said Samsung would probably reject the warranty due to the scratch. I left, called 611 and had a new phone the next day.
Edit: I've experienced this with 2 carriers, AT&T and Sprint. Both corporate stores. Joe Blow who has a franchise store wont replace it. The franchise store told me the same old BS that i had to call manufacturer (samsung) Calling your carrier seems to be the easiest way in most cases.
