what is so great about AOSP rom's?

i dont really know too much about AOSP rom's but from what i hear they are very basic.. what makes that so great? i really have no idea since ive never used a AOSP rom. just wanted to know cuz i always hear ppl talking about how great they are. thanks

They are true Android. Built clean from source code from the AOSP website and modified to work with the specific phone. Basically its how every Android phone should come but each manufacturer likes to mess with the software and add their own stuff.

i agree, AOSP is very minimalistic, thats why i prefer them over an other rom

They're fast. Pretty much the main reason anyone switches.

Like the unlock screens this phone came with, both of them sucked. The puzzle was annoying because I would miss the swipe about 15% of the time while the glass unlock screen was just bad looking. I don't see the big deal about AOSP seeing as i replace pretty much anything AOSP/stock anyway(messenger, lockscreen, browser etc). I get it's there for the simplicity and stability but it's just boring if you ask me.

Visually, its a huge improvement over tw3 but that's only the launcher. The only things I like about tw are the music player, task manager, and calculator. That's it. Not worth the sacrifice of performance imo.
We (maybe just I) want aosp because it frees us from samsungs untimely and poorly written source code releases.

AOSP is pure google experience. AOSP ROM's are google experience with developer tweaks.
It doesn't require many approval processes, so it runs the latest version of the O/S usually before phone manufacturers can get them out
It is very slim and minimalistic with it being highly customizable.
It comes minus any bloat, all source code is available, full wiki with instructions to remove any portion you want, teh ability to grab the source code and compile it yourself..etc.
Here is an example as far as bloat goes, I had the thunderbolt for a bit, CM7 checked in around 80ish mb. A sense rom was going around 400 mbish.

I'm assuming then that the RAM usage by the OS will decrease dramatically from what it is now?
Its crazy to me that this device sets aside almost 200mb for the OS anyway, yet on startup, another 200 is used up immediately (I rebooted and cleared memory just to see).
Just seems like a rather large footprint.

Android isn't like your pc operating system. Unused ram is wasted ram. Apps are loaded in the background so they open quicker when you use them. When the ram is too low it kills off some processes.

Yea, I saw that response coming. I get how it works.
However, if you had more RAM to start with, more applications could be cached at a time which means your device will be opening more apps quickly. That's why I rebooted my phone before I provided numbers, because I'm asking about the RAM that the OS leaves free to actually do the caching.
Are you really trying to tell me that Android is so good that it wouldn't benefit from having more RAM available to it on startup?

No I get what you mean. This phone certainly does suffer from a lack of ram and aosp will help with that.
However, rebooting doesn't really tell you much about ram used by the os because it begins caching apps before it fully boots if I remember correctly.

Lol, the more free RAM, the more efficient and faster your phone runs: for example, my old G1 with its limited RAM would freeze for 3 minutes if you tried its phone dial app, mind you it would happen almost randomly as the phone swapped out memory, oc'ing the g1 CPU made no difference since the bottleneck was the memory size. So, the more ram you have the better off you are.

Typically the AOSP roms will be packaged together with a custom kernel built on mtd/yaffs which I believe to be the largest performance enhancer. The fact that the AOSP rom is minimal and has all the benefits as Utnapishtia mentioned just makes it that much faster because it's not burdened down with unnecessary garbage.

why is my ram usage so high? i moved all my apps to my sd card thinking it would help but it think it made worst. im running stock 2.2 any way to lower it?

What you have is not bad for stock. Android is not Windows as far as RAM is concerned. It does a much better job of managing memory usage.
You will take a substantial performance hit by moving apps to the external sdcard. You are best off keeping them all. on the internal storage. This phone has plenty of room unless you are talking 500+ apps or so.
There are more things that you can do if you root from just tweaking memory management to completely replacing your firmware. Before you go this route, make sure that you have at least a basic understanding of what you are doing. Also make sure that you can live with the consequences if your phone gets bricked.

I would root if it was as easy as one click. Iv looked over the root instructions but i don't trust my self, i don't think i'll root till my one year warranty is up. That how long i waited wit my og droid. Thanks for the info i just don't know y they would have put such little ram in a phone like this.

[Q] ICS Memory???

I have done the manual ICS update 4.04 that was recently released in the general section of the forum, and I noticed that the memory is much lower compared to 2.3.6. The memory averages around 50MB, sometimes 100MB, and showing used memory around 285MB. I was wondering if this is normal as some of my games force closes after i start to play. the games uses quite of bit of my phone's resources and was working perfectly on 2.3.6. Also, i use the GO Launcher EX and i tried not using the launcher, but it only frees up little bit of memory. My phone is not rooted, everything is stock of course. I was wondering if anyone else has the same or similar problems? or is this normal in terms of the ICS OS using more memory?

Give me a list of what services are running and how much ram they're using. This is done through settings > apps > running.

The same is the case with my phone. Sadly thats a compromise for ICS, you have to install custom rom to free up more memory.

I use Pixel Rom 1.72+ Airkernel 3.9.5, I now have 180mb+ with many programs running. its super fast/stable

i was actually looking into that ROM and kernel. How is it in terms of performance and battery life. I'm looking for a ROM and Kernel that increases both lol.
Also right now it says 292MB used and 46MB free. the processes running are settings (34MB), go weather (4.9MB) go launcher ex(34MB), go sms pro(7.5MB), go switch widget (4.1MB), google services (8.5MB), android keyboard (11MB)
Also for extra info, here is cached processes:
go weather (4.8MB) launcher (14MB), media (5.1MB), my uploads(3.4MB), package access helper (3.5MB)
in total, including cached processes, 134.8 MB used

You're sure that is everything that is being shown in the two pages? If so, it looks like something in the background likes eating RAM and doesn't want to share.
Regardless, could you download terminal emulator or something similar (or just use adb shell) and type: "ps > /sdcard/ps.txt" and upload/copypaste the file/contents. It's not a particularly great way of figuring out memory usage but i can probably make do and see if something is wasting it. I know on a fresh boot i have much more lying around in the cache than that, without opening any apps - mostly google sutff.
E.g., 24MB launcher, 11mb core apps, 15mb maps (and more in running), 36mb play store and so on. Although currently on ~402mb bigmem, i don't remember it being much less before - still 200mb used (as always) and cache is generally filled to the brim.

Hi. I have the same memory problem, i created the ps.txt. I don't know how to read this txt..
What does mean these things :
USER PID PPID VSIZE RSS WCHAN PC NAME
What are ppid, vsize, rss wchan??

RSS -> Residential Set Size -> RAM usage (Physical only)
wchan -> Some waiting indicator, never looked into it
I just want a detailed list of what processes are using up the RAM. Basically i'm looking for something with excessively high RSS and just comparing it with my phones results.

Too sleepy (and mentally deprived) at the moment to give a good answer. I would, however, try ditching go launcher altogether (preferably uninstall, hopefully not too much trouble) for a little while and see if it gets better. I can't tell for sure without better memory analyzers but it is possible golauncher has gone haywire (or maybe not, trial and error ).
If not this, i notice there are many kcryptd processes going on. To my knowledge that is kernel based but i know not what it does or what it's for, did you encrypt the phone by any chance? I havn't run stock in too long to remember how the ps list was. I should be able to give a better, more thorough answer tomorrow regardless though.
edit: also, i've attached my own ps log for reference. We're talking around 205mb used and 197mb free when that log was taken. Have a look. Note that RSS (all in kB) can be shared, so that 20mb from each go launcher process may well be the same ~20mb between all of them which they all have access to, so it's not 100mb+ used, just ~20mb.

I'm pretty sure I haven't encrypted anything, is there a way to find out what has been encrypted? I have removed go launcher ex and the themes. Will now see how the memory is, in the meantime, go sleep Harbb lol.

Wow I'll have to try that pixelrom and airkernel for sure (especially since I just recently rooted for the first time a couple days ago).
The miniscule account of RAM we have on our phones to play with is literally my only complaint about my Nexus S. If I could seriously UP the free/available RAM like ismailham says, I'd be falling in love with my phone all over again!

Definitely non issue. Done it to send mine for repair for a failing BGA, it was near painless. The biggest "trouble" was removing CWM and SU to make it look stock.

I've got a sgs+ I updated to android 2.3.5 from 2.3.3 it improved the overall lagginess abit. I have tried almost everything not too difficult to smoothen things out because I'm not really into custom rom kinda deep stuff. For instance, temple run, lags every 10 secs and I fail. Angry birds? Same thing. My buddy with SGS "classic" does not have any of these kind of problems.

If you want to have a better gaming experience (no lag..) you can either buy a phone with a stronger cpu, or root (which is really easy) and see if there is any custom kernels available for your device. With a custom rom and kernel you can make your phone more powerful than it is by increasing the speeds of your cpu. Phone's that don't have enough power don't play certain games well. I know you said you aren't into roms... It's really not that complicated. There is no way to make your phone more powerful, than to root and install a custom rom and kernel... Hope that helped.

The only problem with that is that the sgs+ has a 1.4ghz processor *COUGH*. its a single core but 1.4 is more than enough for temple run or angry birds. have you checked what programs are in the background? maybe there is a process that is polling every few seconds and lags the phone.

Yeah my phone too can get pretty laggy crashy and unstable when I am using it allot without turning it off.
ICS on my Samsung Gio lagged allot so I had to switch back to an earlyer version which increased my CPU performance by 400%, (however, graphic performance change was almost negligible)
You could also try something like a2sd, if you already have something like that your SDcard might be slow. (I suggest you get some confirmation on this one from more experienced android users before actually going and buying a new one, since I am quite new to this whole android stuff).

You probably have a lot of apps running at the background. Try installing a 3rd party app manager and end all apps. I mean all. Should work. If not then your phone has a problem. SGS+ SHOULDN'T lag behind the SGS not unless the SGS is rooted.

What is your "better phone for games"? Will it be released for ever?
Buy an iPhone for 0 lag gaming.. Android has some lags.

If you don't want to root and install ROMs then pretty much your only option is to uninstall unnecessary services and apps. Try uninstalling an app, testing the game, and keep uninstalling untill you know which app is possibly the offending one.

do a reboot,and use 3rd party task killer to see what had auto bootup and slowing down ur phone

My dad barely let me root to make a backup before updating. (my phone but still) And then there is warranty, I already have problems with GPS. I'm probably not going to do that. Thanks for trying, thanked.

I tried advanced task killer, but it really didn't make a difference. I think there are some self-restarters out there. And with app called watchdog, I didn't saw any active apps. Thanked

If u root the thing and want to restore to factory default for warranty purpose, theres always odin. Just few clicks away and your phone is fresh default like its only been minutes its out of factory.

I did a factory reset. Then I tried to play something, it helped, probably the most. But there still was some lag? My friends stock non-rooted sgs classic runs better with like 70 apps installed.

I like the customizing of android. I can make my phone look like IPhone but not other way around.

Rebooting helps for some 10 minutes, I really don't want to reboot that often. My phone goes 40-50fps but lags 1/4 seconds every 10 secs. I sometimes get bigger fps drops when playing reckless racing 2. I guess that is for dual core processors, but mostly it runs fairly well apart from those little lags

Sigh...... advanced task killers or any of them are just a pile or **it, they just use up ram, on android we all know theres no way to close all apps, they'll just keep opening anyway and they can't close most apps. It drains your battery and has your processors trying harder with a ram drainage. Absolutely USELESS.

I knew that, that's why I used watchdog. It shows how much CPU power everything uses. Ram is there too but that is kinda useless.

dear user it may occur to you that sometimes when you apply a custom rom to a phone it is now built right for that phone because of all the different specs to that phone so it would be best advised to stick with the set defaults if you don't realy know what you are doind (like me) but also you could try and root is (universil androrot) and then use some programs like memory booster or just un install some apps from your device all together so free up some of the phones memorry.

Whenever i use game killer on an aosp rom and when i look for the values it reboots. i have tried on paranoid android and liquidsmooth and same thing happens. is there any specific settings on how to use it with an aosp rom? it works fine on touchwiz. any help with this will be gladly appreciated.

I have used it on kairosoft games and never had any problems with it so I can't help you out.

Thousands of people do my decision was to flash cleanbean which is a stripped touchwiz rom. It's not the best choice though since half my ram is in constant use but it works. It used to work fine on cyanogenmod I don't know what happened. Oh well.

You know the old saying "Doc it hurts when I do this" .
Well don't do that then....
If your RAM is half full consistently, then your ROM is broken. The Android (Linux) OS memory manager strives to keep the RAM 80% used /full all the time so that apps load faster. If its less than that you either don't have any apps installed or, you dorkeked something. Lots of times people try to use auto task killers, which work against the OS and cause much memory thrashing and gnashing of teeth and resultant poor performance. Having 60% of the RAM free might make you feel better, but it won;t make your phone faster, just the opposite.
