I would like to know what are your guys readings of RAM usage. Mine sits around 240MB/339MB
Is that high or normal? I do have quite a bit of widgets on different home screens so I dont know what the baseline is. Please share your results.

I'm not sure if i am 100% right about this maybe won of the senior members who does know can enlighten us on this...
But I remember reading somewhere that task managers some times can hurt your phones RAM usage. I don't use one anymore unless it comes stock. and then I rarely find a reason to open it on mine. In standby I am running around 80-100 with 200-300 of freem RAM so with the SGS4G i don't think i will find a reason to use more than the stock utilities. I somtimes will installl a tool to monitor the RAM to see what I'm usin but every once in a while I go through and uninstall anything I don't need right away. I figure ussually being in good internet coverage I can always put something back.
So does anyone else know about wether or not the "Task Manager" could actually be a tantric in some cases?

So widgets are the ram hog on this phone? I have been constantly clearing ram in the task manager to help with speed. I only run clock, battery, and calender widgets on my device. Are they enough to boost me all the way to 240+ even after a RAM clearing? Considering the age of this thread is this still the case with new ROM's that are starting to roll out? I'm still stock, and very noob to android devices, but the urge for mods is growing given the positive responses to them.

Well, this is def not the case anymore. I sit around 200MB free. Ever since cwm's final release the doors opened for us. Go get some love

You shouldn't have to worry too much about RAM usage. A lot of it used by the OS. But yeah widgets does lower it and whatever app you're using. But I hope you don't resort to using task killers just to save 50mb's of RAM. It's there for use and shouldn't be looked at too much.
Mine shows about 400/626, but haven't noticed any big difference in battery drain when it's at 300/626.
Simple answer....everything hogs ram. The best way to tell what's worse is settings » applications » manage applications and watch your ram usage when you have certain things running. You will notice what is hogging more than others.

On the moon our weekends are so advanced they encompass the entire week
Samsung and Tmo set many bloatware to run ALL the time and hogs RAM
via Linda file manager and auto memory manager (which tweak's android's memory management, not a standard task killer), i saw many apps that always run (many with priority equals to android system and the phone app) such as "wifi calling, visual voice mail, my account, qik, device management, drm, etc.
not everyone use these apps and they take up precious RAM and tiny amount of CPU cycles.
worse, however, is how the phone keeps loading unused, unaccessed, unwanted apps into memory (been weeks since I used pandora, yet it keeps getting reloaded into memory).
from clean boot, I get 150mb free. after a week, I get 45-55mb. This causes memory manager to kill off app as soon as you switch away and alot of stutter (dont you hate it when your browser gets killed)
Dont know if theres a fix for this. I tried tweaking the OOM parameters but it doesnt seem to work on this phone. Samsung probably tweaked something that broke this.
Im not sure why but in the past week, my phone ram was was quite low. (30m - 45m) Before that, even after playing games and stuff, the ram was always above 55m. I have the go sms app, i have lookout running always and battery notifier (big text) to tell me my battery level. these were the apps that i downloaded just before the raam went low. oh and i only have 4 widgets running on my screen. (google search widget, power control widget (the one with options to toggle wifi, bluetooth etc etc on and off), a go taskmanager widget to show me how much ram i have and a music app widget) BTW im rooted running stock 2.1. Hope someone can help me!
If you want more free ram try to upgrade your phone into 2.2 custom rom...

must've been the services or processes running hidden in the background. there are some apps you can use to kill or stop them. but mainly i just use autokiller memory optimizer to modify android's default app killer to kill apps even when the ram is not very low(it kills apps when ram reaches a certain level). theres also a function in autokiller memory optimizer which allows you to kill processes. if you want more ram, you could use swap too, but it eats more battery, so i dont.
its a good app, and you dont have to use any task killers anymore. you can use the strict preset in the app if you want higher free ram. swap if you activate swap, you could go up to more than 100m free.

oh ya i forgot to mention i have already been using autokiller memory optimizer at strict level for a month already. yesterday i changed it to aggressive hoping that my ram would increase but to no avail.
then it'd be that you have to many processes running it in the background. see from autokiller memory optimizer. just tap to close. swap gives you a LOT of free ram also. but you have to be using a swap compatible rom of course, so stock but rooted, no. unless u are using the eclair strikes back rom. im also on stock singapore but rooted. average free ram now is around 50 and im underclocked running at 500mhz cos i wanna save battery. its still running smoothly. actually, i dont really care about how much free ram there is, if its smooth then its all right for me. is your phone running smoothly?

huh no sadly D: every time i launch app then i exit that app, it will take about 3-5 sec for home page to load. It wasnt like that a week ago. (then it was very fast to return to screen-no lag at all.) btw im using go launcher.(it was there a month ago and had no lag at all until last week)

My suggestion would be to flash the stock Cincinnati bell sbf. I did that recently it is the most updated one from Motorola and is set at 720 MHz by default. I don't use anything and my ram is around 55-60. Smooth as hell. I use launcherpro. Its prettier, you can choose the keep in memory option which stops it from redrawing the screen. Mine is rooted. I get a day and half of battery life with wifi and autosync in 100% of the time, an hour of GPS, 1 hour gaming, one hour music and the odd texts or calls. Hope that helps. Nothing in my opinion beats stock 2.1

I use CyanogenMod 6 and its pretty nice... i have around 70-80 mb of ram free... btw i have about 25 apps instaled...

If you have 30m-45m ram and it didn't affect the performance of the phone, then nothing to worry....now if your rom is in the 2.1 stock, you have a problem especially in using camcorder due to low memory... my suggestion is to flash the 2.2 rom like wahhu rom, xda special or the cm6...My ram is in the range of 30m-60m and I'm using the wanhu rom and even the cm6 rom still the performance of the phone is great..... Actually there is something in the phone that eats the ram..... It is one of the reasons why there is a problem in porting the cm7.
P.S. Try to flash the original wanhu rom then apply the latest update of Mioze-update-SC_2.2_XT720_Beta3a-Mz05 and the dark froyo theme.....

Ya i remember last time i use camcorder my phone had frozen. (nothing was responding. after 5 min i decided to battery pull then after that all apps started to force close, including launcherpro, so i could not do anything with my phone and had to uninstall launcherpro to solve problem. I really want to stay on stock 2.1 cos it has no issues at all until recently the ram problem which was slowing the phone down a lot. even at 1ghz 66vsel and autokill memory optimizer at strict level its quite low ram.

If you are going to do it from scratch, I suggest you use the cincinnati bell sbf. I have had a very good experience with that. Root with universal androot 1.6.2 beta. After that install open recovery and youre set.
i have about 60 applications installed and here a screen shot of a very comon amount of ram i have in mafia wars when done any were from 95 to 110 i have availble for use.

I don't know why, I have the same thing, but I think its related to how you would order a 16gb microsd and have, for instance 14.03 gb.
Some of it gets used by kernel space and video ram.
Think of this as a computer, a computer with a video card that doesn't have on board RAM will reserved some portion of the RAM for it's own used and will not show the full the full system RAM because of that portion being reserved. It's computer's nature.

Basically this.
If you look at any Android device, you'll notice it doesn't list the full amount of RAM that it physically has. It's just the nature of the operating system.
With 1.62GB reserved for use by applications, who can complain? That's equal to or more than pretty much any Android device in existence at the moment.

Huh. Think about what you just said.
Bloat is by definition superfluous data that is not required. And the ram would still work, it just wouldn't have anything to run so it wouldn't have a function.
What you were probably trying to say was without the necessary required system files the ram would be largely useless. Of course that really isn't relevant in addressing what droidstyle said.

can't see the attachment in the OP, but I assume based off the comments they are noticing the 1.6Gb available to user, which is as others have explained, after all the system gets it's memory and all
then out of that, at least on my CM10 JB build, with a lot of apps running, there is still 1GB of ram free, so there's 600Mb actively in use by apps and what not....
be really glad you have a full gigabyte of free ram, you could be like the Exynos guys and get a gimped 1Gb of ram and have only 100!150Mb free, and have your apps and stuff having to reload and stuff just to maintain free memory for overhead.

Yes that is what I was trying to say. Thank you. But it is not irrelevant because by definition bloat would not be necessary files to my way of thinking. Bloat (the way I think of it) are files taking up space that are not necessary. This 380k is necessary.
the 380 is mostly necessary. you and droidstyle are both correct, no not all of that is useless stuff but honestly probably a majority of it is crap running in the background, stock apps and widgets and processes, that nobody will ever need.

LG Optimus LTE II announced the same day as the Galaxy S III comes with 2 GB of RAM. Although, if I recall correctly, the usable memory is something like 1.2 GB.

2GB of ram is quickly becoming the norm. It's nice after a couple days let say I have opened 60 apps, and when i go back to an app from the day before after using my phone the entire time, to be able to go back to that app and have it be right where i left it, having lost nothing......also it's nice to be able to run very involving launchers and not have to wait on it to reload from time to time......

Your so called bloat isn't loaded into ram unless you launch it and I'm certain it isn't using the system reserved ram but would use the free ram pool. I would assume its the os and video memory that is using that space not some vzw apps you aren't using.

I notice my TOTAL RAM (not used RAM) is gradually decreasing. For example, my total RAM started at 1.79, then went to 1.69, not at 1.59. Is this normal? Why is it decreasing? What can I do to increase to total RAM back to out of box (or close thereto) of 1.79?

Uhhh I just checked mine and I have 1.56 wtf. I swore it was 1.79 before I switched to jb tw.
Actual ram available on this device is 1.6gb on touchwiz...aosp roms might be slightly more.

Exactly. I know my S3 started at 1.79 out the box. Now at 1.59. Although I've rooted my phone previously, I unrooted my phone and am now back o stock. Any help to get total RAM back up is appreciated.

Haven't you accepted OTA's since you first had this phone? The small difference in ram missing is likely because of newer firmware updates similar to, for example, the missing internal storage of your 16GB or 32 GB that is dedicated to TW. Couldn't the same hold true for ram since we don't get a full 2 GB out of the box? If you've used Odin to return to stock and your available ram hasn't changed to what you remember it was at, there's likely no getting that back.
My max has been at/around 1.62 GB of ram FWIW.

Mine is also 1.59. If everyone the same it being used by new OS/firmware. If you are even close to using it all need to kill some apps running apps.. I have 200+ apps on mine and still only using half of it.

Yes I've accepted OTAs. Currently on VRLHE. Not sure what happened to RAM. Just don't like to see it going down like this. maybe future OTAs will help.
They are obviously reallocating it somewhere, maybe the gpu?
1630 ram here on AOSP.
Couple things, touchwiz hogs up a lot of ram, so if you are on a touchwiz rom you WILL have less ram. AOSP roms use far less ram, so if your on AOSP you'll have a lot more (hence me having 1630). Free ram is wasted ram as well, if its not being used then its being wasted. And finally as updates come things can be relocated to other places, just because you can't see it doesn't mean its not there and not doing something helpful

I think I have noticed the same thing efore
Just a question, why are we concerned with "only" having 1.59gb of ram? Is that not enough to run with? I mean damn most phone that come out the same time had 1gb. I see wanting to know whats using it but I wouldn't be worried about running out. Haha

Agreed. 2 gigs of ram (1.6x actual ram) is more than enough ram. The reason why so many phones now that have 1gig of ram run slow is because so much of that ram is used by Sense, touchwiz, motoblur, etc which slows everything down. That's why AOSP is nice to have as an option because you get so much more actual ram to use thats not being sucked up by manufacturer skins. Getting 2gigs is a huge plus solely because of the touchwiz UI, because if we only had 1gig like the international version we'd be stuck with things appearing to run slower than they should.

I know the feeling about the laggy feel of not enough ram. I came from a droid x with only 512mb. Most times it wad bearable but others it was an annoyance.

The more apps you install on your Android device, the less memory you make available on your device. Then your device will become slower in processing your apps and this will definitely affect your battery life and device performance. Just like no one likes to use a slow computer, no one also loves using a slow Android device. So let’s look at how we can make our device faster again.
How to make your Android device faster again:
1. Reboot your Android device:
If your Android device suddenly becomes slow and takes unnecessary time to respond, reboot your device as this will kill all processes consuming your memory. Then you can launch your desired apps. If your Android is still slow after rebooting follow the steps below.
2. Uninstall unnecessary and unused apps:
It is a common practice for Android users to install a lot of apps, some of these apps are rarely used or unnecessary, uninstall such apps to make more memory available for other important apps to use in your device. Ensure to always keep minimum apps on your Android device and keep only the important ones. The less apps you run, the more responsive your Android device will be since there will now be free available memory to use.
3. Reduce the number of Widgets/Home screens you use in your device:
Reduce the number of widget your device and also reduce to its minimum the number of Home screens on your device. Widgets consume your memory as their services run on your device even when you are not using them. Reducing them will make more memory available.
4. Install a Custom ROM:
Since newer versions of Android OS performs better than their older counterparts, it will be wise to install custom ROMs to get a newer version of Android OS. This will make your device more responsive.
5. Transfer apps to Memory Card:
As much as this may involve rooting your Android device, moving apps to your memory card will make more memory space available in your internal memory which serves as RAM to your device. A2SD is an app that can allow you to install apps on your SD card rather than your internal memory and this will help you ensure more internal space on your device.
6. Turn of unnecessary services when not in use:
It is advisable to turn off services you are not using anytime you are not using it. Services like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS etc. Most times even when you are not using an app, its services may still be running on the background, so killing the services manually will make more space available to other apps.

So much have been written about this topic in so many blogs, no matter what have been written one thing remains certain, when you install so many apps, your memory is used up and your Android device requires memory to process quickly, so when the memory have been used by other apps, it is always difficult for your device to perform as expected. So I will advise you to always ensure good memory management practices that will always free up internal memory for your Android device to perform optimally.

Find it helpful? You have no idea how crazy this is. I literally have given almost the exact same advice to most of my friends when it comes to their laggy androids. Since I work in retail phone sales and am a computer geek, of course I rooted my atrix 2 as soon as I got it. CM7 CM9 back to Gingerbread, then ICS leak came and voila. Anyway KUDOS listen up people this guy knows what he's talking about. Custom ROMs, Apps to SD CARD, things will go a lot smoother.:good:

See the dev section. We have a JB leak.(I'm from a2 forum too ) A thousand times better than ICS. Not for ATT rite now, but will be soon available for em.

It should be noted that when you move apps to SD that have widgets, it usually makes the widgets unusable. Good info none-the-less.

Overcloack its a risk, i dont suggest it at all because there a reason why Sony or Samsung or HTC set that frequency on that CPU, that reason is safety and durability, two things that jailbreak leaves... Do it at your own risk
