Exynos 4 Exploit patched in N8013 Release? - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've read some say it's been patched and others have said it's not. Does anybody have any confirmation one way or the other.
I'm still using the Chainfire program to block it, but I'd like to uninstall if it's not needed anymore.

Im on a gt-n8013 which was ota'd to 4.1.2 this morning.
Exynos shows me as still exploitable....
Sent from my GT-N8013 using XDA Premium HD app

Thanks, didn't realize that if you unchecked the patch box it would show exploitable as the status. I just installed and clicked the boxes right away without looking.

I was unable to root with exynos abuse after the update for what it's worth

See, that's where my confusion came in. This is not the first post I've seen stating this. You would think if the vulnerability was still there you would have been able to root. Others have said, as posted earlier, that the program though still shows it as vulnerable. It's all very confusing. I used Mobile Odin when I installed so I had root before even loading the program.
So I guess I'm just confused again.

count me as confused as well, cause it does say exploitable :silly:

I wonder if it's just, what I call, assumptive coding.
If (CPU = Exynos) and (checkbox <> checked) then exploitable
IOW, all it's really checking for is the correct CPU and that the check box isn't checked. It might not actually be checking for the exploitablilty itself and rather just assumed it was if it has the Exynos CPU.

I saw that, but it's very confusing. I suppose when he says 'ends with "M"' that he means except for the last 2 letters. Because none of those examples shown actually end in "M". I'd also like to see something more official.
I'd really like to see Chainfire comment on how the program determines the exploitability that it displays.

LOL. Samsung's/AT&T's never ending ineptitude provides quite a bit of comic relief. I mean...really, how hard is it to push an update? I remember getting OTA updates on my G1 without issue. Has nothing been learned since then?

I don't know how I missed that? Thanks though.
It had this sentence at the bottom too:
* What are risks for performing the upgrade?
o This upgrade has been thoroughly tested by Samsung and AT&T to be compatible with Captivate devices running previous versions of the released software. Customers who are running unsupported operating systems (e.g. those that are rooted or have not been received from T-Mobile and Samsung) should move forward at their own risk.

LOL, FIND ALL "T-Mobile" REPLACE WITH "AT&T" it's that easy.... or one would think....
I checked Kies Mini and nothing. Blah!
Ehh ...
The probability of Samsung/AT&T releasing something better than what you can find here at XDA is extremely low. The devs here at XDA are probably more familiar with the phone than Samsung or AT&T anyway, as they have actually been working with it these past few months.
I'm actually a bit surprised that there isn't an XDA branded phone by now.

Best OTA Update Ever!

Sweet update. I always ran 1.5gigs+ of RAM and have noticed the occasional lag spikes this phone has (especially with live wallpapers), this update brought me down to 750mb of RAM. I'm hearing you can re-root after so there really is no disadvantage to this update.

actually more ram use might mean its caching better. Android memory management is a strange thing. I used to use a task killer to "free up" more memory on my old phone but that actually made it slower.

In Linux, and for that matter, all modern operating systems, more RAM used is better. Unused RAM = wasted RAM.

I think there is a gray area where the system should cache some of our apps. But not fill the whole damn thing up! But not cache anything at all either.
There should be a middle ground and Samsung should just run some performance test and see where we get the best response times. I really don't get how they do their testing.

Let's not get too carried away - first, if this were "the best update ever," it would have included an unlocked bootloader, and since it did not, it IS not the best ever.... second, there certain is a disadvantage to updating right now, it has not been confirmed or denied that this update has in fact patched the exploit Dan "THE MAN" has created, and to quote him directly:
djrbliss said:

If you are interested in taking advantage of this release, it is recommended that you avoid installing OTA updates until it is published. I didn't see an update from you about this, but I wanted to weigh in. I saw this thread and your issue. I installed the update myself and it seemed to stay on the Sprint LTE screen for way too long. I actually had time to stare at it, worry, then pull up this thread, reread your issue, read the reply about recovering, and reread the solution! Then the screen dimmed and after I stared it down some more, it loaded the system stating the update was successful. Not sure if this was your issue, but maybe? For those that may run into this, I guess be patient!

I had same issue before this update. Phone was stuck on beta version and said I was on the latest version when checking OTA. Smartswitch is complete garbage. Not only do you have to mess around with old C++ redistributable just to get the latest Smartswitch to run, once you do get it running the auto-prompt to revert back to stock no longer worked and the manual recover feature also didn't work as it said I had an invalid serial number even know I didn't. Not only did it not work, apparently the serial it wants is on the box only so if you don't have the box your SOL. I had the box and it still didn't work. Total lousy tool and worthless.
I ended up having to flash the official build with ODIN doing a clean flash. Once I did that, everything was great. Issues went away (battery drain, lag, getting hot, etc) Now this latest update popped up like normal. Update didn't take long to install, all good.
So those that were on beta at some point, use ODIN to flash official build. I already have a GS8+ on order and moving to big red after 15+ years with Sprint. Sprint is taking away subsidy on top of I can't take the network anymore it's total crap. That is a story for another day.

I have the same issue. Updated late Sunday evening and never got past the LET screen. I left it on over night plugged in and still at the LTE screen in the morning. Went to Samsung Experience Center in Best Buy and they re-flashed and all was well with no data loss.
I was prompted for the update again this morning, ran it and again looking at the damn LTE screen as I type this. The Samsung folks are off until Thursday so trying to figure this out. The SmartSwitch app does not recognize the phone.
Will look at Odin and appreciate any tips you, or anyone, has.

(If not I'll be suprised)
Look at s7 edge (exynos) if you want to have the approximate method.
Once twrp is released, I bet around the beginning of Mai, you will be able to install it using Odin (breaks knox, s pay, etc)
From there you'll be able to flash whatever you want (magisk, SuperSU, etc)
Edit:
Although I just stumbled over this:
Quote:
Finally, the Exynos 8895 also includes what Samsung is calling an “enhanced security sub-system with a separate security processing unit” for use with user authentication, mobile payments, and the like. Based on Samsung’s description this sounds a heck of a lot like Apple’s Secure Enclave, which would be a very welcome development, as in Apple’s case it has made their phones a lot harder to break into.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/11149/...-8895-soc-10nm
yeah, saw on their website that encryption layers are going to be a lot stronger. I still think it'll be cracked. It's a large enough phone. just might take longer than normal.

geez the phones not even out yet. Gotta give the devs time to get there hands on the phone, then time to actually find a way to root it.
Would it be wise to right off the bat unenable automatic downloads of "Security Update: Improves Performance and Battery" in case someone finds a way to Root and they slip in an irreversible Firmware Update?
I bought this phone knowing it's going to be at least a year before at minimum root being achieved
if at all ,so I'm not getting my hopes up at all

I hear you, preference I guess, I just like being up to date. I find that sometimes you are unable to use certain features without the updates.
I have the note 4 myself, and the only update that was a problem with that phone was MM, you could not downgrade from it. I have the AT&T variant so, no root access, and the current temp root that they have listed on the forums is not viable because your only temp rooted on experimental testing firmware.
The main feature you'll be missing out on is Bixby most likely, idk how good it will be or how bad, but you'll be behind that, apparently Bixby is not finished yet, and will not be shipped with the phone, at least not the complete version.

Haha, Buzby (as I call it) is the one INTRUSION I do NOT want!! Never asked for it, just forced upon us. This would be great, but I suspect the Phone already has Bixby embedded into it, what with all the hype (publicity for it) about it not functioning at launch I believe is a marketing ploy to bring attention to it. The part that is not being made available at launch is their end, nothing to do with needing an update for it to work (for those who blindly want it).
See, you watch, they will make such a big deal, like a major announcement when it is made to function and they "switch on their Bixby servers" it'll be posted all over the web like when the Note 7 fiasco (supposedly) happened.
Stop for second. And think. THINK. For yourself. That right there is invaluable advice. Bixby is not your friend.

Oreo beta on all devices?

So I found this in a thread on Reddit :
I didn't have to use adb at all so I'm not sure. I followed these instructions:
Went to samsung.firmware.science
Selected my phone, my currect firmware (which was BQK5 for me)
Selected ZQKO as the firmware to update to
Copied downloaded 'update.zip' file to my SDCard
Powered off my phone
Got into Recovery by pressing power+bixby+vol-up
Selected Update from SD Card
Selected my update.zip files
Update took about 18 minutes"
User claimed it worked on Verizon with no data loss, is there any truth to this?
I'm not sure I'd trust that site.
It absolutely works. Did it on my Verizon S8 as described above. Went from BQK5 to ZQKO and lost no data. The site can be trusted.
It's Reddit, not Anon.
I thought flashing those zips wipes data. Always does for me...
HOWEVER, 99.9% of people's bugs and complaints are because they didn't wipe before running the beta and were cured after a wipe.
Well assuming it does work, how would I know which beta version it is? Also what about future updates?
I'm not saying I don't trust reddit.
I'm saying I don't trust samsung.firmware.science (which is blocked by my company, saying it has PUPs)
The thing I don't like is the "unreleased" or "leak" stuff

To be fair, many corporate web filters throw false positives to block as many "distracting" websites as they can.

Correct, but this is still a pretty sketchy site imo
I'd rather not take any risks for a beta that's probably going to end in about 2 months, but that's just me.
Apart from possibly being sketchy, it's not really 'all' devices either right? It's only the SM-G950U variants... (USA only?)
Still interesting though
Why are you giving people hope when you write "Oreo beta on all devices?" but when you go to the site only the u models are selectable?! Shame on you! There are much user with the f model and the can´t update!
Why install a firmware update from a three option web site , compromising your phone at the mercy of anyone ? This is bluntly stupid
is there a version for F or FD devices?
It is about being on the new version of android. If you did not make it in beta, then this one way of getting in on the action.
Website is fine, it's where I got all my updates from. It's for the s8 s8+ and note8 only. Obviously for G950F users you guys have root and can get any Oreo rom you want so don't complain that it's for snapdragon only
Doesn't work on Verizon S8
Tried it. It didn't work on Verizon Galaxy S8.

Did you select the option in the original post? I haven't had a chance to attempt it, plus I'm not sure which beta version is correct

let me just put it this way. We cant give your phone a virus via a OTA without Samsung signatures. If we happened to have those we would just build it via AOSP and make TWRP and such. We could sign TWRP and make it for our phones without tripping knox. We could do all of that with signatures which we dont have. So trust me, if it works, its legit.
