[Q] Razr hd vs galaxy s2 - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys I post this treat to compare MOTOROLA RAZR HD VS SAMSUNG GALAXY SII.
I own both of them and with the official firmwares i think its better the korean one, here are my reasons.
MOTOROLA RAZR HD
Good battery (mAh 2500)
Nice design
Bad camera quality
Poor camera app, but fast
Screen colors are bad (maybe it is just me but black isn't black, and there are some spot darker)
Poor apps to begin with, there is no radio app, no notes app.
SmartAction is the only good app, but i wish it can do more, like activate this at call or deactivate afther call.
Really suck having a looked phone, but it is also understandable to do that if you root and bric it, ITS YOUR FAULT!
SAMSUNG GALAXY SII
Really light, i always forget where i placed it, and then find out it is in my poket.
Basic design
Good colors, I watched many movies and series with it and when it is a black screen, it looked almost like if it is off or locked.
Good starting apps
Good camera app, with many feature, like macro focussing or text photos etc
Camera is also 8MP but much better than Motorola one.
Even if I lost this phone now i regret to not having bought another Samsung.
Let me know what you think about it
and give me some ideas to fix my RAZR HD not rooted Jelly bean 4.1.1

I can't understand why people complain about camera. The camera of Razr HD is really good, provided you know how to use it. If you are looking for professional quality i would suggest you to buy a DSLR rather than expecting it from a phone. I have Samsung Galaxy S3 and when i see shots from both phones on my large screen, trust me, no one could tell the difference which is taken with which phone.
The AMOLED display of Razr HD is best.. two advantages of this are that it consume less battery and secondly the black is really black. Try adjusting screen brightness to see if it helps. If you are not so found of this display switch to IPS display phones like LG optimus G, but then you will complain about battery life. Trust me you can never get everything in one package.
You can download any app (Radio, Notes) you want from Play store .. Why complain that you don't have it pre loaded? Samsung does provide a few good apps but i have seen the crap they load along with some goodies.
So my whole point of this post was that you can't really compare two phones. Every phone has its pro's and con's. No phone is perfect. I can tell you 10 bad things about Galaxy S3.. but its irrelevent.
Solution : Try installing CM10 and see if it live upto your expectations.

Thank for your opinion, I'm gonna unlock it first then root
Aftherward I will install one custom rom
CM 10 isn't ready for this phone yet, and i dont think the official developer of it will improve
so I might try something else maybe try to cook by my own, and there is ubuntu coming

Razr hd is excelent choise, I turned off 4G and bloatware and batt last enought, and I say enought! camera is not like the one in xperia s but works "good" great screen and nfc, great greate quality in materials. multicolor notification led by the way.

RAZR HD
RAZR HD is the way to go with out a doubt.
I have owned Galaxy S, Galaxy S II and I can tell you - RAZR HD makes me truly happy! Even with LTE on, It lasts me on average 28-38 hours depending on how much music I listen to.
The screen is awesome, camera is nice as well. Again, this is not a DSLR - this is a mobile phone. Even on 4.0.4, it is nicely optimized. One of the best feature I found on the RAZR (yes I owned XT910 as well) is Smart Actions. You can set requirements for a profile to be launched (as well as actions to be executed - turn on/off wifi, send a text message and etc.).
Final thoughts, RAZR HD over any phone atm IMHO.

well, you guys sound really satisfied, i'm getting souspicious that i might purchased a bugged phone, I must check someone else razr hd before confirmation

[Q] Should I get the Maxx HD?

Hey All,
I'm sure this forum is a bit on the biased side, but I'm between two phones now I think. I'm looking at the Razr Maxx HD and the One X+. Any reasons I should get a Maxx HD over a One X+ other than battery life? I'm torn as I really like the battery life on the Maxx HD, but the camera on the HTC is better. Is the camera on the Razr HD really that bad? I think the camera is my only big hang up from getting this phone over the One X+. I need something that's going to last me two years due to signing a contract so I want to make sure I'm making the right choice. I'm coming from an iPhone 4, so my camera right now is only 5mp and much older, so really if it's better than that I don't need the best. Just torn on what to do. I've also read the One X+ rules really hot and that the quad core in it isn't much faster than most of the dual cores out there. I'm not going to be gaming or at least any high graphic games.
Thanks,
Tim

Well i as you posted it in razr hd forum.. most of the people obviously will recommend you Razr HD but here are few reasons to it.
1. Better Battery Life (Huge Huge Plus)
2. Superior Build Quality (Personally I haven`t seen One X+ but Motorola really did well on this phone)
3. Clean ROM. (Very similar to stock Android)
4. Camera : I think its not a big let down like many people are claiming on other forums. I have clicked many photographs and made few videos and seriously i really liked the quality. It can shoot HDR photos and videos. If you are so concerned about camera go check the phone at the store and try clicking photographs.
5. Best Radio Reception: I have used samsung, sony ericsson, htc, apple in last few years, but the call quality on motorola is really good. I don`t know what other people think, but i felt the difference.
I recognize that there will be a bias in this forum, but I wanted to hear from owners of the phone which is why I went here instead of a general forum. I posted something similar in the One X+ forum as well. All the pros are the reasons I want the phone, the dual/quad core doesn't concern me too much, particularly as I've read the One X+ quad core really performs like a dual core. The camera has been my one hold up. I'll have to go play with one in a store and take some pictures, I figure it has to be better than the 5mp on my iPhone 4 and that's what all my pics are with now. The One X+ does feel pretty solid in terms of build quality, but the battery and heat concern me. It's got an unlockable bootloader too so that's one plus it has, however as long as I can root the Maxx HD, I'll be ok.
Thanks,
Tim

Tough choice, if you need the battery life go with razr. If you want a better camera go HTC. One x camera is not that great so I doubt you'd be that bothered. Most top end phones have comparable cameras ... Reading some reviews you'd think they were miles apart. Real world use I doubt you'd really tell the difference. I'd recommend you try them both.

Camera question from S3 user

I have an s3 but am considering a RAZR HD. I use the camera quite a bit and was wondering if anyone has had both phones and can give me an honest comparison.
Every review says if it wasn't for the camera it would be a better phone. Looking for some advice cause I love the build quality and feel.
Thanks.

If you have better lighting than the camera takes pretty decent pictured (better than my iPhone 4s), but when your in a low lightening area or dark rooms the camera is ****. Also no image stabilization it sucks beside that its a pretty decent camera as long as you can take pictures without shaking your hands lol. But rest of the phone quality wise is 200 times better than gs3
Well, every phone has its pro's and cons. I would first of all suggest you get the razr hd maxx, since you cant swap batteries. I assume you take lots of pictures, and that takes battery life.
As a new owner of a razr maxx HD, I can't answer your question directly. However I think the razr hd/maxx is superior to the gs3. My friends have had many more issues with screen cracking on the gs3 than the razr hd/maxx. The radio is much better in motorola devices compared to samsung. That is definitely a plus for uploading photos, txting, and making calls.
The camera on my samsung galaxy nexus definitely took pictures a lot faster. It was running 4.2.2 so I'm sure once the update comes out, maybe the camera speed will improve. Hope this influences your decision.

Honestly, there is no comparison.
The HD is not in the same league as the S3, however with root & bootloader unlock (not that I recommend), I have installed and tested about 6 cameras apps:
4 from the Google store & 2 customized apk files. I plan to keep the nexus 4 4.2 version apk file & the Snap camera from Google play.
The 2 are producing better quality pictures than the stock camera (if you need fast camera install the burst camera from Google play).

I came from the S2. I tested out the S3 quite a bit in the store as my wife was considering it. The camera on the S3 was really impressive with the number of shots it could take though I didn't take one home and see it in all conditions.
The only fair comparision I can make, though, is between the S2 and the RAZR HD. I would advise that if the camera quality is important, that the RAZR HD is NOT the phone for you. Samsung is, and has been, way ahead of what the RAZR is packing as far as photos go. The S3 is supposed to be much better than the S2 in respect of features and shutter speed at the very least, so I'd advise sticking with the Samsung and that's advice based on their S2 camera which is getting dated now. As much as people want to love their phone and think its the best, the camera is very much the weakest link on my phone. Its the only thing I miss about my S2.

I think he means that the Samsung's S3's camera blows the RAZR HD's camera out of the water.
Is everybody using the Jelly Bean update? I know a lot of people on this forum have probably downgraded to ICS for Root reasons, but I have found the Jelly Bean stock camera is fantastic.
To prove my point, I had a Galaxy Note 2 (same or nearly the same camera as the S3) and I was flipping back and forth between the Razr HD and the Note 2. Finally after a lot of personal camera tests I sold the Note 2 because I think the Razr HD has a better camera.
Again, I am talking about ONLY the stock camera AFTER the Jellly Bean Update. Before this, on ICS the camera was a disaster. Now there are some other features of ICS I wish I had. For instance my speaker is much lower after the update and I can't root the phone any longer. I was rooted, and used Voodoo but my OTA update failed so I had to flash manually.
Anyway, if the camera is a deciding factor (and it was for me) get the Razr HD. All other things being relatively close, I think it is the better phone.

After using the droid razr maxx hd for a few more days, my impressions of the camera are good. It takes pictures as quickly as the S3. Maybe we can post some pictures, one with natural light, one with artificial light, from both models and compare? I'm sure there are already some photos out there in reviews that let you compare.
Sounds like the update improved the camera a lot.
I'm wondering if my handset has a bad camera after reading other people's satisfaction with theirs.

probaby depends on what you are taking pictures of. I should clarify, the camera still struggles with graininess in low light. I have yet to find a cell phone camera that does not, however. I was just pointing out that the biggest faults from the ICS update like the slow shutter and inability to focus at close range have been fixed in Jelly Bean
I think in daylight, or good indoor light, the camera is about as good as anything I've tried with the possible exception of the Pureview 808.
Just don't expect miracles.
For reference, over the last 24 months I have owned:
Iphone 4, Dell Streak 5 and 7, Galaxy Captivate, Galaxy S2, Galaxy Captivate Glide, Galaxy Note 1, and 2, HTC Amaze, LG Optimus 4x, Xperia Play, ION, X10 and X10 Mini, Pantech Flex, Nokia 808 Pureview, Motorola Backflip, Razr and now Razr HD

Can you explain this? Are you saying that you put a nexus apk on your razr hd? Is the Snap camera the best that you've found for the HD?

Here is a picture I took today at a pottery studio. Its natural light on auto mode. Notice the great colors and how the camera handles the light. You can see sun rays as well as shadows all in the same frame.
Once again this is full stock 4.1.2 ROM and camera app.

[Q] Android Mobile Phones - What to buy?

Hey guys,
Bit of a weird post, as I am not sure what the answer will be.
I want a new mobile. I've had iPhones since the first one, and currently have a '5. I am totally sick of the OS - the list of icons is shiiite. Even now I'm back to being jailbroken and tweaked it's still dull as dishwater, and now feels fragile to (as all JB'd phones do).
So; mighty phone quest 2013. It started just before christmas, and is still going. So far I have bought, tried and returned (or sold):
Nexus 4 (nice enough I guess, bad at games compared to the iPhone, do like raw android)
Samsung GS3 (hate the plastic, hate the blue-tinted screen, no better than N4 at anything else)
HTC One (silver) (badly put together, gets hot when used, terrible camera, still worse than iP5 at games, especially 3d ones)
HTC One (black) (better then the silver, build-wise, but same everyhting else)
And tried briefly in store, but not bought:
Xperia Z (Felt a bit light and plasticy? Unsure about Android updates in the future?)
I need a phone for (in order):
Email
Twitter
Web
Camera
Texting
Facebook
Apps (Addicted to buying apps!)
Games
Phoning
Music
Video
So, what should I get? I did have an S4 on pre-order, but I cancelled it today because I just don't think I can live with the plastic-ness.
Any tips on which android phone to go for would be ace.
If for low cash only 3 phones: Nexus 4, Nexus 4 or Nexus 4
With good kernel and rom that phone is faster than S3 in games/UI and it not have overheating.

Cash isn't really a problem.
Nexus 4 is nice, but it wasn't as good as I had hoped. What Rom/Kernel would you recommend?
I dont have it (my brother have) but most kernels are good like Franco kernel . Overhating is now not a problem and phone is realy faaaaaaaast
Low cash: Nexus 4
A lot of cash: S4 (Octa) or next Nexus, iPhone.

You kind of eliminated most new top spec handsets yourself. Apart from the Galaxy s4, which you will not like as yet again it's plastic. You want the best of everything in one phone which sadly you're not going to find.
I have the Galaxy s3 running siyah kernel with foxhound rom and i think its brilliant. Great all around.

Among all these smartphones, I want to suggest you Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone. It has a 12 megapixel camera giving you autofocus and LED flash. With features like geo-tagging, touch-focus, face and smile detection, image stabilization, you can capture every moment with ease. It is powered by the latest NFC technology and the operating system is the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. You will find the gaming experience is bound to be awesome. This Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone is also packed with a secondary camera of 1.3 megapixel along with the facility of video recording.

What? Almost none of that sounds like the S3 that I know of and which he has already owned.
As for the O/P, the HTC DNA is not cheaply built and has respectable specs.
Did you own the HTC One S/V/X or the "One", because that seems like the phone that would fit your scenario the best.

[Q] honest advice from HD owners

I am getting the itch for a new phone, and i am stuck between 3 phones, and i need some real world input.
I currently have the S3, rooted, unlocked on CM 10.1. I am unhappy with a few things, such as poor signal strength, data drops (on both stock touchwiz and CM) and poor battery life....
The main things i look for when i get a phone are signal strength....being able to get as close to pure android as possible (whether stock or running custom), run wireless tether (for free) and the ability to play decent games (nothing crazy) and run things without the phone locking up.... also, camera is nice as i have two young kids, and i want to take "good" shots, not expecting DSLR quality, and "good" video.....
So i thought to myself, i like the feel of the Razr M, it's almost the perfect size for me. But i hear the signal is terrible for a motorola, and the camera is not the best. but now the bootloader is unlocked so that opens the door to endless things. but it only has 1gb of ram, and the graphics processor is not the best
Then i looked at the Razr HD and thought, nice battery life! decent specs (although not far off from the M i am seeing?) camera is somewhat improved and unlockable bootloader..... bigger screen than the M....
Not the Droid DNA is catching my eye. Spec wise, look, feel, possible unlockable bootloader depending on SW version. Quad core seems fancy... etc etc.
So i am kind of torn. I have had at least 10 android phones in the past 3 years or so ( i worked for vzw for 6 years) and i always thought my OG, Droid X, Droid X2 have had excellent signal. That is really the most important....
So i guess my question is, if you were in my shoes, would you still pick the HD? or would you go a different route? any and all input is welcome, and i thank you in advance for your time. oh and camera reviews for the HD seem mixed on both the video and camera. my wife has the original MAXX, is it all the same?
Chad
Get the HD. Everything you listed that you want, the HD has.

I'd imagine that, among those choices, the vote on a forum devoted to the Razr HD and the Razr Maxx HD would be pretty heavy for the Razr HD and the Razr Maxx HD, right? I've got a Maxx HD, rooted and unlocked bootloader, running mhous33's debloated stock ROM. Everything works, all the Verizon stuff is gone, the phone is smooth and fast. It's not perfect, though. I have continued problems getting and keeping a GPS lock. One day it works fine -- the next it's sure I'm 100 miles away. But the camera works, video camera works, HDR camera mode works, Bluetooth works, signal strength is fine.
Overall, though, for me, the combination of a good-sized screen, a relatively light weight and small size (given the screen size) plus a solid build quality and AMAZING battery life make the Maxx HD my DD for the foreseeable future.

I own an razr hd, i chose this phone after losing my galaxy s2.
I have managed to unlock bootloader and root my device I run my own custom firmware (deleted some useless stuff and enhanced some others)
I think this phone has good battery-life, the camera is decent, wifi sometimes is buggy and gps work fine,
the thing I'm a bit disappointed is the screen pixels seems a bit lowquality, but looking at all the specs this phone is gonna last at least some years
before I will turn to something new
I was in the same boat. I still have my S3 but just use it for a WiFi Toy about all it's good for. The signal just was terrible on it in weak areas.
I got my HD on ebay and love it so far. It outdoes the S3 in many ways.
The only thing I miss on the S3 is the camera, but the MAXX HD does good enough.
Would be a very smart move.

Yes the camera does suck on the Razr HD. I came from a GNex and even though that phone only has a 5MP camera, it was WAAYYY better than the HD. The HD seems to do good video though. Signal strength is also noticeably better in weak areas. I could never get 4G outside my house on my GNex. Now I get 4G INSIDE my house.
Camera is really really really bad...
worst focussing i ever had on a cellphone, quality not that good, contrast and colors seem worn out.
The rest of the Phone is awesome. Good Performance, really good signal, resistant, good batterylife. Perfect Phone
But if you would like to take snapshots of your children and your family, as a good memory, dont use this Phone. Even in normal daylight my phone got problems making a good, focussed picture, with nice and natural colours.

I don't get what all the complaining is with the Razr hd /maxx camera. I've had this phone for two months now after a galaxy nexus. Sure you can't blast pictures as fast as the gnex but the HDR mode is great. Plus if you like taking photos, the Maxx is gonna have the battery life to get the job done and then some.
I was so frustrated with needing to carry extra batteries and charging sticks in my pocket and bag, not to mention remembering to charge them all.
Now my phone works worry free and only needs charging every TWO days.
Gaming is also great. The benchmarks on these phones aren't too shabby either.

More pics. The only thing is though man, you'd be getting a phone that's getting close to a year old. I guess selling it for a gs4 or X phone is always an option later?

Here are some pictures which i took, showing the usual quality i get. Of course i sometimes have good pics, like the ones you posted.
But the average quality is, imho not that good.
Rest of the Phone is more then awesome, eventhough benchmarks on stock are not good, overall feeling is great.
But maybe waiting for the next Motorola Phone Generation would be better for you.
More pictures
Wow your pictures looked really washed out. Try tweaking the exposure, or using HDR mode already I take it?

I also would like to stress the significant improvement in reception with the change from my galaxy nexus. Motorola is known for a killer radio. I'm getting better reception in the boonies even. This is also great for power management.
On that note the acclaimed galaxy S4 is supposed to have superior power management.

[Q] Looking for better camera quality on a phone

Here's the deal. In the past few months, I've owned almost every high end phone (iPhone 5, 5S, Galaxy S3, S4, Note 2, Nexus 4, HTC One, Motorola Droid Razr MAXX HD, Moto X, etc.). Overall, (NOT in terms of megapixels, specs, or on-paper features, but in everyday use) the iPhones have the best, fastest, most consistent cameras for taking quick good pictures (again, just my opinion and experience). All the Android phones I've had, I tried the stock camera apps as well as ones on custom ROMs I installed and apps like Focal, and none could match the iPhone for pure reliability and consistency. For example, the Samsung phones take fantastic, high quality pictures—in some situations. And sometimes they'll take 5+ seconds after I press the shutter button to refocus and actually capture anything. I have other gripes with the other phones, including the iPhone, but won't list them here unless someone asks to know.
Interestingly enough, the best pictures I have from a phone came from an old Motorla Droid Razr Maxx running Cyanogenmod 10.1, on pretty much stock Jellybean 4.2.2, from the stock google camera app. It definitely did not do as good a job of automatically adjusting exposure, but when I focused a good shot, it almost always came out great, exactly as I'd seen it on the screen, very sharp and detailed with good and realistic colors. Since then, somehow no other phone has consistently taken such good photos. Running the exact same ROM on a Galaxy S3, the pictures almost always came out pretty blurry, regardless of how still I held the phone.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has some idea of why this is, and if I could do anything (other than getting an iPhone of course) to again be able to rely on a smartphone camera to at least get pretty fast, good pictures? Thanks!
