To buy or not to - T-Mobile LG G2x

I am looking to get a new phone. Optimus T is my current. Fresh off a 2yr contract with T-mobile. I don't want to sign another one but I kinda do to save money right now. I found some G2X's for cheap but I am kinda set on a SGS2. My heart really is set on the next iPhone but if I have to use my low range android that long I might lose it and go all no electronics(yeah, right) So my question, is this phone good enough to settle on in case come summer I can't afford to make the jump back to apple or Is there something else maybe you might suggest? Any help appreciated.

Don't impulse buy or just because it is cheap(er). Especially, the decision should not primarily be based on price, it should be based on what you actually need. For example, do you need ICS or JB or will GB do? Do you need to keep the phone for every day use for 1 year, 2 years, etc. Do you need OTG to use the phone as a USB Host? Do you need a phone which is still supported by the manufacturer and has solid independent developer support? Do you need etc., etc., etc.,... Make a list, prioritize the items into must have, would like, research phones which have the must haves then the would likes in order of preference.

well whatever droid I get, I'm going to root the crap out of. I need it to keep me updated. Tired of friends saying hey play this game with me and I can't cause my phone isn't supported and or too slow. Gb, JB, Ics, doesn't matter as long as I can run all the hip apps/games and whatnot. I've spent so long with something that can't run anything, I don't even know whats out there to use now.Really I just want to know if this phone is still good enough to play games? yup it's going to get a rom and if I do get the g2x I'll need some info which one might be a good one to start on but what I am hoping is some insight. too many phones to weed through. also know any places to shop for smartphones? tried ebay and craigs and some others but not successful yet.

Don't get this phone, not worth it anymore. If you need something cheap get an HTC sensation.

I wouldn't get the phone, development is at a halt since there isn't native drivers for ICS/JB. If the dev scene doesn't figure out how to get drivers to work, this phone will be stuck on GB forever. You're better off buying a different phone.

Take a look at Nexus 4.

AFAIK this phone should have no problem playing the latest games given the proper custom firmware and kernel optimizations.
As for the argument of G2X having better sound than the GS2, I can say none of them even comes close to my 4 year old E-Series Walkman.
If you're looking for phones of this particular generation, I'd look at the Atrix 4G. Same SoC (Tegra 2), but double the RAM (1GB as opposed to 512MB), which should vastly improve video (read: gaming) performance and overall operation. They've managed to get ICS on it recently, too, so there will be hardware acceleration.

ya i agree, skip this phone.. anything LG as a matter of fact.

suggestions on phones? t-mobile friendly. I would get the Nexus 4 but stock is scarce and its more than I want to spend right now

HTC Sensation can be had for cheap. Has JB, ICS, and GB if you want it. I've got one and it's hard to justify upgrading to anything else. 64GB of storage with an SD card, dual core, extended battery for a penny ( literally), can't ask for much more.

I would go for the s2, or one s if you don't mind no sd slot or removable battery.
Skip this phone, don't be a victim lol.

I had the exact same phone as you before I went out and wasted my money on two of these phones. I should have done a little more research before buying. Look elsewhere.

Get A SAMSAUNG GALAXY S2 or S3
That would be my advice.
The S4 is around the corner. If you can wait.

I would get the LG Optimus L9 (especially now that it's $199 starting Jan 9th). You wont have all the driver problems like you do with the G2x and it's a nice upgrade. If you are looking at cost for something brand new then get an Exhibit II from Walmart. It's $149 but also a single core phone. Otherwise used for cheap would probably be the sensation.

Who says you won't have driver problems? Not to mention LG has terrible software.

Because they are open sourced unlike Nvidia's drivers and once throw on CM10 you wont have to worry about LG's software.

Not quite. A full gig of ram is only going to "vastly" improve performance if you're trying to do something that absolutely needs a full gig. That's true for computing in general, not just phones. Game performance is going to be far more reliant on the SoC. In very simple terms, memory holds information needed at hand while GPUs and CPUs crunch numbers and render images. That extra 1/2 gig is going to shine multitasking, not gaming. Anything else that really needs that full gig to perform is going to be bottlenecked by Tegra 2 anyway.
Regarding the phone dilemma, if you want an iPhone within a year I wouldn't dump a lot money into an interim phone. If you can snag a G2x SUPER cheap (less than $100 imho) it might be worth it, depending on how crappy your current phone is. It will handle most 3d games and absolutely everything 2d. A sensation would wear a lot better if you think you'll keep this next phone longer, but that'll probably run you a little more. You're getting into so-close-I-might-as-well-buy-a-Nexus with your GSII ambitions though.
You might as well buy a Nexus

That goes with every single device out there, so you're saying I shouldn't get any phone because of that chance. It's a TI processor which have been pretty great at keeping stuff open. Even then it's open source which is a whole lot better to deal with then the closed source Nvidia drivers. It's not like LG is using anything proprietary with this phone.

I would also tell you not buy this device. Go with s2 for now and wait till the next iPhone comes

Nexus S or LG G2x?

Hey Everybody,
*Posted this up in the LG forum for the Optimus 2x. Wondering what thoughts you all may have as well. Thanks!
Well I've had my Nexus S since March 23 and I've really enjoyed trying out various roms and tinkering around with the Android OS. (I came from an iPhone 4 on at&t.) Now I feel like I'm at a crossroad trying to decide what phone to stick with for the next year or so. I have till the 23 to return the nexus to best buy. I bought unlocked and if I do decide to switch I'll do the same with the G2x. How many of you are coming from the nexus s on this forum and what made you want to switch the most? I'm primarily concerned with the battery life on the G2x and updates either from LG or modders. The things I don't like about the nexus s are 3G data speeds (2.5-3 down and 1-1.5 up in my area, Birmingham, AL) and 1 day to day in a half battery life. What would you guys or girls do in a similar situation? Can anyone comment on the "4G" data speeds in this area of the country or in general on T-Mobile? I've read various reports of speeds from 5-9 Mbps down and your average up. I also hope the 4G won't kill battery and we'll have a killswitch when not in use. I'm sure most have seen the mobileburn video, she seemed to put down the nexus s screen in favor of the G2x. I find that hard to believe seeing how awesome the samoled screen looks and how black the blacks are. Anyone who's seen the G2x in store that can confirm the findings she had? Thanks for any help anyone can offer up!

the nexus s will always get first hand on new version of the update, i chose the nexus s because it contains no junk.
I think you can make an argument for both phones either way. The differences I really see in the phones is that the LG has 4g, a dual core processor, hdmi out, and records 1080p...whereas the nexus S has NFC, gingerbread, sip calling (feature of gingerbread).
I don't see the G2X having 4g that big of a deal to me considering that I regularly get 3-6 megs download speed on my Nexus S. I compared it with a friends Galaxy S on 4g and we pretty much always got around the same speeds ( so I don't really see the 4g speed being a big difference maker...it just sounds good).
The G2X has a dual core processor...well I don't have any speed problems with the Nexus S at all. The phone runs perfectly fine and doesn't slow down, so yeah dual core sounds good but at the present time I don't think it is really going to be truly taken advantage of and is thus overkill.
For me, I had hdmi out on my evo and never once used it, so that is a moot point for me.
1080p recording in my opinion is another one of those things that just sounds good to have. In reality it really isn't any more useful than standard def recording. On my EVO and my Nexus one I could record in 720p and all that really resulted in was much larger video files. I'm not sure I even saw a noticeable difference in video clarity than in standard def.
Eventually the G2X will get gingerbread I'm sure, but in the meantime I would miss having SIP calling as I do use it. As for the Nexus S having NFC, that's another one of those things that sounds good, but until it is actually put to use in the real world it isn't very useful.
All in all I don't see enough difference in the G2X to warrant me taking back my Nexus S (I'm still in my return policy) and paying more for the G2X. I just don't see what I'd be paying more for.
I don't get caught up in the speed war. 3g or 4g, for 99% of what I do, I don't think I would see a difference, both are fast. Tethering might be impacted, but it's something I rarely do.
Hardware wise, both phones are blazing fast. So in the end, it comes down to software, pure google or lg's framework and update schedule
I other the google experience, unpolluted by anyone.

I'm still on the fence. No 4G in my area. My Nexus is plenty fast. I'll have to play with one.

in terms of hardware.. yes, in terms of software... no
and hardware isn't that far off, you're losing Super AMOLED
You could always return the Nexus S. Get the G2X. Then decide. If you liked the NS better, you can return the G2X and go buy the NS again or keep the G2X. Whatever you decided to go with.
I looked into the Nexus One forum once and they were calling the G2X the TRUE NEXUS 2 PHONE. Yeah, I was like ? They really need to get their minds out of the gutter. I saw an unboxing video and the G2X still had some T-Mobile apps in there like the App Pack, Telenav, and some other ones. So it's not even a "true Google experience phone" per say.
You could also wait for the HTC Sensation. Now, that is the phone that I would be willing to give up the NS for, but I wouldn't since I like the NS and will be keeping it until another Nexus phone comes out.
I suggest trying both since you have that option and decide for yourself. You're money, you make the call.

Agreed its preloaded with N.O.V.A. too. But I give props for making "stocklike" ROMs as their stock.
And it won't necessarily mean it'll have top of the line updates either.
Look at the G2, WOOOOOH its stock! where's gingerbread? Yeah. thats right. (Not counting CM7)
IMO: Galaxy S II > HTC Sensation > LG G2x
I personally dont like G2x's bottom. It has WAY too much room.
http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/15/htc-sensation-versus-the-rest-of-the-dual-core-world-smartphone/
Let me start by saying that I really love my nexus s, it's fast, and with cyanogenmod the battery life is awesome. The screen is great, but coming from an AMOLED phone before this, I don't get the hype.
That said, if I were to make a decision about a phone now, I'd go for the LG. With the tegra 2 chip, the phone is plenty future proof. Nvidia seems pretty serious about taking the phone market with apps specifically for the tegra 2 chip. I know there's no point in playing the ghz game, it's endless, but if you can do it for free (nearly) then I don't see why you shouldn't go through with the swap.
Part of the reason I bought my nexus s was stock android, but cyanogenmod offers battery life and all the awesomeness of stock.

I think I just destroyed your dreams
Bye Bye G2x/Sensation/GalaxyS2's Hype.

My view on things...

I think that instead of recalling g2x phones they should offer the new tegra 3 phones soon to be conning out as compensation or a replacement phone.
I think that would be great and of course they would be loading money but they would have another chance to redeem themselves if they do happen to receive the tegra 3 platform.
By then I think that they should have a grasp on coding and drivers on tegra devices although these will be quad core cpus

do you have any idea how much money LG would lose by doing this? Did toyota give new cars to everyone who had problems with their cars?
you think too much like a consumer... this idea would never even cross LG's mind
This is true but keys say a trade in.

This right here. I'm sticking with my G2x for a while(because I can't seem to stick with a phone and I wanna prove to myself I can ;_ but when the time comes, I'm probably gonna head on back to HTC. I've liked what I had from them so far.
i've been into smart phones for years. correct me if i'm wrong, but i can't recall one single time in smartphone history that consumers were given a completely different, newer phone to make up for the shortcomings of a previous phone. that would be insane. nice, but insane marketing.if it HAS ever happened, i'm sure it was over something more serious than the g2x's issues, such as.....??? i simply can't imagine it happening.
The hell with that i want double my sufferings, i want quad core phone with fm transmitter!!
Faux123 for dev!!!
And I want a million dollars along with a Saleen 7 + a job which gives me 5 months paid holidays while I'm also getting a T3 phone as a compensation.
P.S. I love my phone. So please do excuse my sarcasm.

The Nexus S 4G (which wasn't really different), so I did do a bit of keyboard-in-mouth, for a minute there I did forget the Nexus S came out on T-Mobile first. Tired.
I came from the Nexus One, bought the G2x off-contract, specically to be able to pick up the Nexus Prime at a discount.
I just hope the nexus prime won't disappoint. Rumors on specs are mixed. The qualcomm chips in the Tmo SG2 and Amaze are meh. Also 5mp camera is meh.... other specs say it'll have the Exynos chipset and 8mp cam. Some say Verizon will get it first others say T-Mobile. Verizon has the Droid Prime with similar specs already and aren't ones to keep it clean with Android.
Either way, if the specs are worthwhile over the G2x, I'll grab it.
Best solution for me personally would be Verizon with sweet specs as my old work blackberry needs upgraded and I set up our new exchange to work properly so my company is allowing Android sets now... meaning I can kill my $70 personal T-Mobile line, sell my G2x and profit.

I honestly don't think it's that much of an upgrade of our G2x's. Our phone is still up to par with alot of the phones out there now.. Once we get ICS on this thing, we should be fine.

I know everyone wants the latest and greatest, but sometimes it's a bit overkill. Unless you have a good job with 500+ bucks to throw I don't see why we should be running to get the Prime when you already have a Tegra 2 Dual core device. Nothing can even tough this device yet.
It'd be hard for me to dump my dual core device for another dual core. At this point might as well wait for whatever the next gen quads come out next year. And once that happens, I don't even know what we'd do with a quad core lol.
Well... We'd buy more batteries, of course.

Lol, I seriously think they should just take a break on the progression of processors, screens, GPU's, etc. and use that time and man power in advancing the technology of battery's... That's literally the only Achilles heel that even the best smartphone's have these days.
At this point, I'd rather have the creation of a 5,000 mAH battery with out changing it's size than a quad core processor.

Agreed ten fold. I'm waiting til the Nexus Double Prime before I plan to upgrade. This phone is doing just fine, and has a very nice set of developers working on it for us.
If they did make quad core phones, I bet the battery life would be at least 20% worse than now. When I'm not even getting super amazing battery life to begin with, it might be a problem.

Yeah, main difference between the two will be updates. Something the G2X will probably never officially see. After the half ass 2.3 update we got I'm pretty much over it.
....
I really don't see the point of quad core phones; unless Google does something unbelievable with Jelly Bean that needs an insane amount of processing, nothing a smartphone does needs that much. Hell, dual core isn't even that necessary unless you run a lot of 3D stuff.
There is such a thing as overkill people. I'd like to see phone manufactorers declare the smartphone as it exists now finished and start working on some new innovations that would make better hardware necessary. 3D screen ala Nintendo 3DS with FFC capable of eye-tracking to orient the 3D so you see it at any angle?
While I agree that the G2x can hold its own, I do miss owning a nexus device. My friend still has his Nexus One and running official software we can only get via custom roms.
My reasoning to grabbing the Nexus Prime IF if launches on Verizon is so my work can pay for it. Unfortunately I heard Verizon is launching the Galaxy Prime.... which is similar but not the nexus prime backed by Google.
Well just have to wait until Tuesday. All the rumors running around its hard to make any reasonable decision.
If Verizon gets gimped on Google support then I'll keep my G2x for a long while.

Would you recommend this phone?

Hey guys, long time android user here. Started out with the G1, then the Galaxy S, then a Viewsonic Gtablet, and am currently on a galaxy nexus and a transformer prime tablet, and have rooted and flashed multiple roms on each and every one, thanks to the wisdom and guidance found in the XDA community. My question is this: my wife is currently with tmobile and her 2 year contract is up. I want her to come to verizon with me (for many reasons) she will be coming from a HTC G2. Would you recommend this phone? I know it may be hard to be unbiased on this but please try. I've never had a hummingbird processor before, and the 8mp camera beats my 5mp on my nexus (at least on paper). Could some one possible make me a short list of pros and cons as you have found them to be while using this phone as a daily driver? There is no one i trust more then members of the XDA community so your oppinions on this phone will pretty much make my decision for me, thanks!!
depends on how often she would use it and what for.
i love my charge (except for the battery life - but it is inline with all other android devices). the charge is great when rooted with the tweaked 2.2 from dwith. however, there is little to no hope on this phone getting ICS (has the latest GB though).
if your wife is tech savy and knows how to use an android phone, the charge will be fine (just don't expect much support, as the community has dwindled down to a few loyal folks - I think those folks left for the nexus or GS3).
I've heard that the GS3's bootloader is locked, so customizing may be tricky for awhile. and the nexus does not have removable memory (from what I'm told).
that being said, VZW is phasing out the Charge, and the nexus is only $150 (charge listed at $100, with the CPO being $80), so I would lean more towards the nexus.
however, if she complained about the HTC, might as well get her iPhone (I got my wife that, and have not heard a single complaint from her).
This is a good phone.
But are you looking to buy off contract or a subsidized two year...

It's good...but outdated. The 4G sucks down battery like no other, the Hummingbird is outdated, the 512 mb of RAM is a hindrance at times, we have been abandoned by most devs (thank god dwitherell learned how to ROM), and it's pretty much guaranteed we will never see ICS, official or otherwise.
That being said, this was my first Android phone and it was the best phone out when I had my upgrade. Going back, I wouldn't change my decision, I'm happy with this device. This phone is also very forgiving, meaning if you f*ck up then it's easy to unbrick. A great beginners phone, but if I were to get a new phone at this point I would probably pass on this one (especially if this is going to be left stock) unless this is the best deal around.

Ditto. Well put. This is my first smart phone. I did a lot of research and knew that better phones were going to come out. But I also found out unlimited data was about to end at Verizon. I grabbed it because it was the best phone available at the time when I could still get unlimited data. Now the only way I'll keep my unlimited is to pay full price for the next one. But then, I've never been able to use very much data because signals suck where I work and I can't listen to Pandora radio or watch Netflix during breaks. If I try I use up my battery in no time flat. I feel totally screwed by Verizon. If the other carriers didn't have crappy coverage I'd switch to another.

When and to what will you upgrade from the venerable Captivate?

So I've been sitting on an upgrade since before the sgs3 came out. Have been telling myself to wait until it's under $100...Now the HOX is $99 via at&t or even $79 via Costco with free activation and bunch of accessories...color me tempted. Sure the One X has some flaws, but most agree it's solid especially at $80. Then again, what will these new Android phones go for after iPhone 5 is released? Probably a good deal cheaper, and I like value on the cheap
That being said, I can't complain about my Cappy running CM9; it's running as good now as it ever has and the ICS port is close enough to flawless for me.
Understandably, the question I ask is opinion...but curious what folks are eyeing up for their next phone. Considering I got my Cappy refurbished for $0 plus contract, I have half a mind to wait for the sgs3 to be similarly offered before I bite.
Thoughts? What at&t phone are you holding out for?

Maybe the Note 2, or next Nexus (always a ton of development on Nexus devices ) I've been waiting since May.

i dont have and upgrade till next year :/ so im really wanting to see some real monster phones come that time lol
i was so tempted to buy the sgs3 outright but im holding off
When i bought my captivate on Christmas of 2010, Wal-Mart/AT&T never took off the upgrade i used to purchase it.
So i waited until i was sufficiently bored with the captivate and something else caught my eye.
I bought the note about a month after it was released, do not regret it at all.
The hox is poop, a friend of mine abs fellow teammate sells phones, every one x he has sold in his store has been returned with an issue.
The s3 has been having problems with people losing their imei numbers after flashing a custom Rom, with no way to restore them, the old methods don't seem to work.

I have those three phones on my radar for the next upgrade. The One X was the lowest, and if you're getting information saying it's not worth the box it comes in, that's good to know.
I'm torn between the size of the Note and the additional horsepower of the S3. It looks like they've managed to get around the IMEI thing for the AT&T S3 (at least that's what my 5 minutes reading in that forum indicates), so I'm less worried about that.
I guess it will come down to the price difference at the time of upgrade.
So... there you go. Do with that what you must.
I got an Atrix 2 when it was $1 from Best Buy on black Friday. That's my main phone and daily driver, and my Cappy is my funsies phone. The Atrix 2 still has a locked boot loader (let's see if I ever buy another Motorola unless it's a Nexus) so I still use my Captivate a lot for tinkering.
My next phone? Probably an off-contract Nexus.

Something that is built for ICS and up. Something that is more bleeding-edge tech then the cappy was for it's time. So probably something not Samsung, since they are the leading brand and have nothing to prove.
-xda app, too lazy for something interesting to say-
Keeping mine.... why switch?!
Are you still using your computer from 95?
Technology has a shelf life, no matter how much you love it, it will be more than obsolete within a relatively short amount of time.
No matter how old my phone gets it will still be comparable to the newest devices in its principle purpose, to be used as a phone... Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe my dumb phone from 2005 has the comparable cellular abilities.
The reason I like this one more than my 2005, is the wifi teathering, mp3, camera, and GPS. Tablets and PC's I frequently update because I expect them to do a lot more than play music and call people. I suppose if you were in so impatient to as not wait 3 seconds for a website to load it would be worth the $500 price tag of a new phone. But I would rather be 2 years behind and use the extra $$ for something fun, like a new mountain bike or rifle.
When someone invents a modular phone system that can be upgraded like a PC, then I will buy it that day.

I'm going with either the SGSIII or Note 2. The Captivate has 512 MB ram but the SGSIII (and probably the Note 2) has 2GB! That's why android 4.1 is 'so buttery smooth!' I thought about the HTC One X but the battery is not removable, so forget it. Time to move up to buttery smooth!
Is butter related only to the ram or software also?

It's a combination of available ram, software efficiency, and processor speed. You can have the fastest processor and 1 or of 2 GB of available ram, but if the software is dis-organized, or it has illogical code, or it conflicts with the operating system, you won't have smooth operation. The Captivate on ICS is very close to its limits and JB may be the limit, depending on how the devs make their custom roms. I'm staying with CM9 RC2 until, and if, the stable version is released. Then I'll turn my Captivate into a MP3 player and wifi only browser and enjoy my stock SGSIII or Note 2.
Even on the S3 I'm not sure I'll stick with stock...maybe at least root to freeze stupid at$t bloat.
Thanks for the good input on this thread. I'm severely tempted by the $80 HOX at Costco, but keep reminding myself that S3 should get cheaper by time iPhone 5 is released in the wild. The waiting is the hardest part.

im going for the sgs3. depends on how much its going for in Feb as thats my next upgrade
its far to expensive now though. i have a feeling quad core phones are on their way to market.
I upgraded my phone about a week ago. I went from my beloved Captivate to the Galaxy S 3, and I couldnt be happier. Dont get me wrong, I loved my cappy. I flashed just about every rom that was/is available for it. But my new SGS3 is a marvel of a phone. The speed of this phone is insane. For example, when installing new apps on GS3, it only takes literally a second to install an app with a size of say 20MB. My Captivate was fast, but not that fast, but I guess thats to be expected. If you love the Galaxy S series like I do... Then its a no-brainer what to upgrade to.

I love my captivate. I've sent it to hell and back flashing constantly, soft bricking repeatedly, and dropping it occasionally, but it has remained solid, with only minor injuries. Not to mention I have a smooth, stable (for me at least) Jelly Bean ROM, and an amazing development community!
All that said, I'll run to the next Nexus device faster than a cheetah on hot asphalt.
I'm also thinking Nexus, those things get more development attention than any other device.

I was really close to getting an S3, but now that I have a REALLY fast and stable rom on my phone (helly bean), I don't feel the need to upgrade so quickly.
I'll probably wait a couple months and see what's new!
