Samsungs new open source OS - General Topics

i have been blabbing and shouting about samsung going for its own OS. But most people here were like android is the big fish its free and found saying that samsung cant ditch royalty free android. I have noticed there move when they let the cyanogen community leave the exynos so easily.
Tizen is what i heard is the upcoming open source os by samsung. I knew the way samsung was growing the influence of TW on its phones.
It will be both good and bad for samsung to manage the updates google free and can be free from the limitations. But on the other hand ita development might be slow because of just one vendor putting it on their phones.
So instead of android becoming samsung. Samsung made its own android.
Tech keeping pace.....

Is it something like Samsung becoming like Apple?
Samsung as a hardware Manufacturer so far so good. But as a developer of complete OS, I am not sure. What happens to 100s and 1000s of Android applications?
Edit: Google must have sailed 7 rough seas and moved 7 tough mountains to make android what it is now. (still it could not make it's presence on desktops)
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium

Well soon google will realize the mistake of going complete open source. I have also mentioned this to google before to make some properitery libs in the android regarding security issues. But google didnt listen. Now android should meet its competition.
Seems like now android wont have the best of the best hardware rather samsung will bring it on its own os. Thats why maybe they saved the flexible display and didnt plan to put it on s4.

It will be a very sh1tty OS like bada i hate. I working a hundred or more phones monthly (in a service center since 5 years) and i can say that Samsung is the worst software developer company. All Samsung platform in the past was simple, as simple as crap. Todays Samphones (smart ones) are very good but they using other companies software as base. I still think Bada is a dead end sorry if there are bada lovers in here. Android has some years behind and its a real benefit. Finally sorry for my bad English knowledge.

I really doubt Samsung will launch an own OS; What could happen would launch an Android-based OS, but with another name.

Ugh.. Thisll be like badda os.. BAD OS!!! :/

I hope I am reading the wiki wrong becouse it sure looks like a HTML5 based app sdk. Web based apps might look good on paper for developers that want easy porting but from a user experience perspective they just suck compared to native.
I will concede that Enlightment libraries are very efficient and fast, though.
My question is, do users really need yet another mobile OS?

bada+meego
yuck
android will do very well while it is being developed
who knows after that.

unfortunalby it's a near future for android being less used by companies, just look at Firefox OS wich is in the cloud completely(i'm not really comfortable with this idea tough.) and now samsumg... i just hope they don't fall in the WebOS failure it was...

phone networks in many countries wont support cloud based operating systems. It would require far too much bandwidth. Alot of countries,? especially poorer countries, still don't have fully 3g networks.

Thats absolutely true. Bandwidth is a real issue. But the real deal is that one has to cope with the advancements. Lack of resources cant hinder the development.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app

here all the phone networks use edge for their mobile internet. Good luck with that one. It might be possible for a cloud phone specifically designed for use in parts of the US and western Europe. But outside that its going to fail compared to native apps. Poor countries can barely maintain their existing networks let alone pump millions into upgrading networks for just one os

The Ubuntu Mobile will kick all the OS's a bit back.

I am also positive for ubuntu. But the one thing i didnt understand is why ubuntu is so late in grabbing the phone platform.
the success of any new os is only if they allow the existent device to switch to their OS and not just the upcoming phones. Thats the only way they can grab a bigger marketshare.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app

Ubuntu hasn't really been ready for a release to the average user yet.
The X.org display server alone is a huge problem, it kinda sucks, with the Wayland display server being developed there's more of a hope.
That and the fact Ubuntu in general is pretty awful to manage; every version since 10.04 has seen me go more and more into the terminal because settings in the GUI just vanishes or becomes more obscure.
Truth is the average user has no interest in using the terminal, except for various simple copy/paste'able commands.

Im also thinking that the ubuntu will get some success jn mobile platforms. The main advantage in the ubi is the linux kernel. I would not be surprised if it can run android apk-s like BBX.

As much as I think they're on to something with that, I'm not sure they've got even a clue how they'd get to Android style adoption.

They're supposedly working on a similar project.
So it's basically open source TouchWiz?
Sent from my SGH-I777
No this is a project built from Apple's darwin os and runs on top of a Linux kernel. Miui is just a modified Android ROM. This has nothing to do with Android, apart from the fact that there's a chance that roms will be available based upon this.
I think it would be amazing to see this running. I doubt most people would use it everyday. I mean, we buy Android phones for a reason right? But it would be fun to test.
This will probably not be much like iOS in terms of UI design.
Sure it'll be the same when it comes to the kernel and other low-level stuff, but they probably won't venture into the suefield and go full on UI clone
.

True about the suefield, but it normally doesn't stop people.
What does this actually have to do with Android? There's no mention of being Android-based. This belongs more on iPhone-developers.
People with iPhones already have the iOS experience. They wouldnt need a clone. But some of us Android users might be interested to know that a port may be coming out on other hardware.
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
Sounds like it would be an enormous undertaking without much benefit.
We already have an open-source mobile OS, and it has the flexibility to be modified to imitate other OS's - the WP7 theme/interface for Android looks pretty good.
If people really want something like iOS on non-Apple phones then it is probably best to follow a similar approach: modify Android rather then build a whole new mobile OS.

"Apple, have it their way. Android, have it your way."

Hi guys, I found this on the web...
"Many have the saying “Apple have it their way, Android have it your way.” Wrong, Apples mobile operating system needs not to compete with Android as the operating systems top rated UI which never crashes has become the worlds most popular mobile device operating system. The reliability of iOS totally thwarts the unfriendly confusing and crash-prone UI and in general system of Android."
I don't think so.... Android sells 47% of their phones and Apple sells 30% of their phones and the rest are RIM etc....
You only just realized ANDROID RULE

I don't even see them as competing to people to people who know tech, they are too different animals.
In my opinion if you're going to run bone stock and never want to know anything about your phones operating system or customize anything, the iPhone is the way to go, like for old people and stuff. However if you enjoy changing things, high performance hardware and software, constantly pushing the envelope of performance, and having options for configurations and OS versions, Android is definitely the way to go.
Of course we are a very small majority of consumers who buy smart phones, so both companies need to market their gimmicks. But I think for different demographics they both have their advantages. Of course for us on this forum the phones advantages aren't feared towards us.

Has anyone seen or read about the ubuntu os that will be releasing for the nexus? I wonder if it could be ported to the S3 or have some android/ubuntu hybrid?
Either way I think this will shake some things up a bit.

I don't think there will be a need to port the device as it seems like it will able to run on all devices. I wouldn't call Ubuntu for android smartphones an OS until they officially release it as it seems more like something that runs along side android and allows the user to use the docked phone as a PC. Even on the Ubuntu website they state
Newer multi-core processors are up to the job, and Ubuntu is the killer app for that hot hardware. It’s the must-have feature for late-2012 high-end Android phones.

Even on their website they refer to whatever they are releasing as an app. It appears that Ubuntu for our phones will be more like a multi-tool with the ability to do a TON of stuff, like some sort of super app.
It would be nice to be able to finally compile kernels on the device itself and ditch the need for a 'real' computer altogether.
Well super app or not I think it will be cool to run at least for a few days.

Agreed. It is far from release, and I doubt we will ever see it on an S3. I wouldn't even expect to see an official device until next year.
I agree with OaklandZoo. Ubuntu on a phone sounds great but with the first phones not coming out until next year I don't think it will ever make it to the S3.

Does Android have future?

I just bought the HTC Desire X, but I know nothing about Android. And I am wondering, is it good to start learning about Android operating system? Does it have future, or it is like wm, which will "die" in the future? What is your opinion?
And if I will decide to start learning Android, it is necessary to have linux (Ubuntu - Debian etc) on my desktop or I can work on windows 7 - 8?
Thank you.
Android is like herpes. It's for life!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
WM never really hit the mainstream; mostly people who needed the functions of using the computer away from home, to check emails or are just plain geeky.
Android however, is in the hands of even the most technologically illiterate people, it has spread that much. There's a huge chance that android will last for the next few years, provided there is no new competition that takes over. It's going to take something huge to replace the OS that powers most of the world's handsets. Perhaps a revolutionary phone product or even more competition from alternative OSes.
Years ago, the same was thought about Symbian. People thought that it could last for a very long time, it seemed to be the ideal phone OS until the iPhone came by and changed how people used their phones. Now, despite a quick struggle in the touchscreen era with Symbian s60v5 and Symbian Belle, Symbian is pretty much dying.
I hope in fact I'm sure the android IS the future...
Developers keeps Android alive
Yes I think. It would be growing thanks to its open platform.
For the next 10 years or so
Cos it's based on Linux
Sent from my GT-S5830i using Tapatalk 2
I think Google will keep Android relevant for years into the future. Firefox and Ubuntu are trying to come up with open source mobile OS's as well but they will have a lot of catching up to do to get to where Android is now as far as market share and apps. WM died because Microsoft let it become outdated. It had basically the same UI for years and didn't adapt in time to newer hardware like capacitive screens, plus it was terribly insecure. Some people complain about android, but its very secure compared to WM where any app basically had admin (the windows equivalent of superuser) privileges.

This will make a good Hollywood corporate thriller. think it took years to plan.
First - Microsoft wants foothold in hardware in mobile division.so it needs to takeover some good mobile company in peanuts amount.
Second - placing a mole/trojan Elop in Nokia, who rejects Meego,Android. So that Nokia would run into losses, devaluing it.
Third- Nokia finds it difficult to survive due to those nefarious decisions.
Fourth - Microsoft offers to buy Nokia (acting as savior) that too at such a hilarious price (as planned before.)
Fifth - Mission Accomplished!!!

Very true! The nokia lumia 820 that i owned was a hardware marvel. The only problem was that it ran on a lousy windows software.
Some of its bad features were:
1. The os directories were perfectly hidden. You couldnt tweak anything!!!
2. The apps were limited in features. 3. Some features that are taken for granted in android could not be seen anywhere.
Eg. Screen rotation.
4. There wasnt a single file browser (microsoft or 3rd party).
5. The marketplace was full of paid softwares that isnt worth ****.
6. Where's my google apps???!!!
7. Beauty cant compare with brains.
8. Copied text kept disappearing after some time.
9. Wheres my firefox?
10. Internal memory made a fuss if i ever added too many apps.
11. I kept dreaming about installing jellybean over it.
