I've been using the GS3 since it came out and have had this weird back and forth opinion of TouchWiz and AOSP. I was just wanting to get the opinion of the rest of the community to see if anyone feels the same way I do. Opinion Below:
For some strange reason, I feel better using the Galaxy S III with the TouchWiz UX interface. I used it for a number of months with CM10, but when I was using that interface, I didn't feel like I was using a my Samsung Phone. Even though I had a Galaxy Nexus and loved my time with it (before i dropped it in the river...), the same interface on this particular phone just didn't feel "right". Like I was emulating a completely different version of android. But the moment I loaded CleanRom 5.5.1, all the feeling of the GS3 came back. I can't really explain it, but it just feels good. the software goes to well with the screen size, the way I hold the phone, and (sorry, but) I now love S Voice more than Google's Voice Commands. i can set timers, text people, set events for work and S Voice locks onto my voice so much quicker than when it's older versions.
Again, this is just my opinion, but I would love to hear your reasons for picking one over the other, what killer thing you can't live without, or even why you don't care. I'm down for any conversation.
me too. i tried all the aosp roms and miui. and always find myself going back to stock touchwiz. which is funny. i remember before i bought the phone all i heard was "the only bad thing is it has touchwiz UI" and " touchwiz sucks" and i absolutely love it.
i prefer AOSP
TW but using Nova Launcher and Google Now instead of S Voice.

Basically CM/AOSP/AOKP is the Nexus with better hardware. If you want the same thing but faster that is where you go. If want all the bells and whistles you go TW. It is what you looking for. I stick with TW where all works and run all the 4.1.1/4.1.2/4.2/4.2.1 apps that we can port. I want everything on my $600 device to work . That includes every option that came on the phone. To me breaking the phone to go fast is not an option. Newer options are worthless if all you can do is call if you are lucky. I could call with a brick in the 70's.

I didn't really think of it in those terms, but that's pretty much dead on. with CM10, i did a lot more CPU management, tweaking, and seeing what little things i could change to make the phone break the laws of physics (didn't do it). And with TouchWiz. I kinda just sit back and use my phone as a phone. call, text, watch youtube. I still like to keep my titanium backups synced to dropbox, but not much more.
Random, but every time I load a new ROM that I've never used before, the first thing I do is call one of my parents. Always need to make sure I can send a phone call.
I don't mind touchwiz all that much. Couldn't stand sense or moto blur but tw the isn't all that bad. Throw on apex the launcher and I'm good to go.

Man I'm probably old enough to be your daddy. I been playing and testing for some of the best in the business for a while. If it broke it is not cutting edge. Making broke go faster makes no sense to me. You should be able to make what works go faster and still work. Being on the cutting edge of broke is for the devs not for the masses. Once stable go for it. But if your wife, girlfriend or parents can't get hold of you cause your on cutting edge of broke you have a problem.

I agree completely about you being old.
Between the Data not working on CM10.1 for the first week or so, and little errors that come with devs trying to port other phones' features into their ROM's, I was prompted to go back to CleanROM and just take a breath from all the flashing and rebooting. I'll be looking for that 4.1.2 update. but I'll stay away from the real crazy stuff.

I'm currently on Beans stock deodex with Ziggy's latest kernel @1.72/384. Kinda craps mods and Moto's International VRTheme. All Gapps 4.1-4.2 inverted. Rock stable and running 6500 Quads. Everything works including call recording.
I've been flashing for awhile.
At this point (actually - Nov 1st) I've been CleanROM only. Everything "works" + mixed with WasabiWa's themes - I'm a happy man.
This is the tamest my crack flashing has ever been. It's almost scary. TW JB is pretty nice...

I can't imagine AOSP being much faster than TW with the necessary apps frozen. On my old phones AOSP was definitely the way to go, but the S3 is so powerful anyways, and TW isn't very heavy anymore.
And, in all honesty, the TW Camera app alone is worth it for me to stay on TW. All the non-TW camera apps pale in comparison, both in quality and options.

Haha.. made me laugh
I honestly can't stand TW. I have it on my wife's phone because she likes the camera better than the AOSP. But it just seems like TW just tried to be too pretty and to me it didn't make me happy. Even though AOSP has its little bugs, I just like it better. There are no widgets that I'm OMG about really like I was with Sense, for instance their music player, calendar, clock, and Facebook for HTC sense app... of course I prefer sense 3.5 style widgets a little more than 4. So I just stick with MIUI because that was the AOSP that made me fall in love with AOSP. Used to have the Dinc and Dinc2 and it ran flawlessly on both. Just pure love.

This.
I loaded up AOKP and tried that out for awhile. It was lightning fast on pretty much everything, but I just didn't feel like I was using my GS3 that I had fallen in love with. I'm on the stock JB OTA with Kindacrap Mods 2.6 flashed. The small tweaks in there make the phone for me. Everything's a little bit faster and once I found out that I could make the home button faster (my biggest complaint since owning the phone) simply by disabling the S-Voice polling, just more love to be had.
Being able to set separate lock screen and homescreen wallpapers that don't move (used to love the movement, but not so much anymore) is great. S-Beam is awesome. The premium suite will (hopefully) be a wonderful tweak. Samsung and TouchWiz have come a long way since my first Android phone: the Captivate on AT&T.
To me it is not about speed at this point but stability. Top end devices today do not need to go any faster then when you take it out of the box. I still scratch my head when I see people over clocking their S3. This thing already runs faster then some laptops that people own. Also, can't prove anything is faster when overclocking except running a benchmark. Otherwise they all feel the same!
I love the AOSP experience and options but it still has bugs that are important to me on the S3 so I am forced to use TW. Luckily TW is not that bad on the S3 and works well. If an AOSP Rom was bug free I surely would be running it. And don't believe the hype when people tell you AOSP has no bugs. It can run stable but has bugs that prevent me from using it as a daily.
Running Pure's TW Rom right now it works great. Already has part of multi-window cooked in with the bar on the left and all your apps showing. Hopefully next release will actually have the multi window. He also said that he has the ink effect on the lockscreen for the next rls as well. He is always pushing the bar with new features so I am pretty content right now with TW.
CM10.1 kangs have been nothing but stable for me since I got my S3 a few weeks ago. I like the whole interface and experience; hated TW. Call me lucky but I'm 100% satisfied.
I've gone back and forth between AOSP and TW-based ROMS. Besides stability, I do enjoy the extra features that are on the stock framework.
I'm just curious to see how developers will utilize the source code into their ROMS, now that it's out.
I like AOSP if it works. I would easily be on cm10.1 if everything worked, but until then, I think I have to use my phone as a phone

Same here. I ran AOSP on my OG Epic and while I liked it for what our offered, constant struggles with features broken/ not working made me steer clear of it on GS3 until ALL phone functions work as well as they do on TW.

Ok, I was an early adopter of this phone bought it the day it came out July 18th. There are a great many things that disappoint me about this phone, main thing being lack of Froyo at the moment. I'm tired of waiting for samsung, I have little faith it will truely resolve my issues which are the following
In order to use wifi I must reboot my phone, this only occurred after the official JH7 was loaded on it through the over the air update that ATT did.
Constantly having lag all the time, and having apps running that I never ever use and dont want such as ATT Navigator, ATT Family Map, etc. I was able to root the phone and get rid of those but it really hasnt helped.
My stereo bluetooth headphones must be paired EVERY single time I want to use them, its not the headphones because they work perfectly with 4 other devices.
Of course the GPS, it sucks for everyone, any of these or all fix that? Samsung seems unwilling.
So maybe I'm wishing too much but I've watched almost every youtube review of the ROMs that are out there and theres a few details that stick out for things that I want in a rom so I'll detail them here and hopefully someone can point me in the right direction as to which one has the best combo.
1. froyo based, I need 2.2 for certain apps
2. I've heard theres different modems that can affect HSPA, I want fastest download and upload.
3. No wild color schemes, I dont like orange or green. I quite like the look of the phone I think samsung did a great job with the touchwiz and I know theres alot of you out there that perfer the "vanilla" versions of Android. I'm not one of those people. I really loved the look of the cognition rom and some of the things it had visually.
4. Overclocking would be nice but not at the expense of battery life, I'm right in the 24-30 hour range just as most are on here, better would be great if possible.
Go to romkitchen.org and build your own there. There are many threads about the advantages of one modem over another, and you can pick pretty much everything yourself. Then search for CLShortfuse's GPS fix and you'll be set.
Don't worry, its extremely easy

30 hours, you have to consider what you are asking. I want faster dl, no lag, better gps, but I don't want to eat any more battery. It is possible to get 30hrs of light to moderate use. Heavy use will yield 12-18
Andromeda v1.2 is a rom that is pretty vanilla....simple and has the things your looking for. You have to try roms that you think will be what you want.

+2 for Andromeda 1.2.
You can fix all of these if you root the phone. The best ROM out there is the Rom Kitchen (aka "Doc's ROMs") over at romkitchen.org. You can "cook up" your own ROMs using the specifications you want. This is what is so great about the ROM kitchen, especially when compared to the other ROMs like Cognition: you can pick what you want, and don't have to take whatever it was that someone else decided was best. For example, if you want the benefits of rooting but want to keep touchwiz, the ROM kitchen has an option for that. It also lets you pick things like the theme, boot animation, apps, etc. There are 5 captivate modems, and you might just have to experiment to see which one is best. I did this, and it was well worth it. The one that worked best for me was the XXJPP modem. Just load a seperate ROM with each of the different modems, flash each, and download a few things to see which is faster. Also check and see how well the GPS works on each.
Rooting will fix the lag, although one of the ROM kitchen kernels (Glitterball's Voodoo) will improve it even further. There is something called "Project Voodoo" which is a community of developers who build a kernel tweak called Voodoo which completely fixes the remaining lag issue (this is caused by the inefficient way the captivate organizes its folders), and also improves a few other features such as resolution.
You should go try out my ROM its small and fast and stable. I'm getting great battery life and DL/UL speeds. Give it a shot.
Here.

I wouldn't mind knowing either. I'm thinking it's a different launcher, but I'm only guessing. Still kinda new to android.
TB is my very first android, and i have come a long way, but maybe not long enough
as i can not for the life of me understand why everyone nut over the rom dubbed as cm7?
why???
I have been on almost single rom on the TB, and countless updates on each of them..
what is so special about CM7? do you prefer running linux?? why not run windows 3.1 on your quad core computers?
is it nostalgic?? or does it simply remind you of your ex girlfriend that you loved?
I know the dev team for the CM7 works very hard but so does every other dev.
So is it because cyanogen mod are simply better developers, and with their code other devs could build their rom with their findings..
i need to know, in order to get to the promise land
I guess some people hate anything other than stock android. But tbh I can't stand stock android. It is so boring and not polished.sense is so nice. But cyanogenmod is really fast and responsive. And battery life is a factor
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
i'm sure a full fledged cm7 has good battery life.
not the current one. everything else seems to have better battery life
Its not bloated with extra crap. I love sense but to me CM7 always seems to be the fastest rom I run on my TB. It started out really popular with the TB because it was the only way for people to get gingerbread on their TB. It has grown so much and is finally, in my opinion nearly perfect. Its been a great trip and people have stayed with it till now and it has been well worth the wait. Stock android(for the most part) is a nice breath of fresh air.

It's not really stock android. It's close, but there's many improvements that work well with the system. OMFGB is much more vanilla than CM7. It's also 100% opensource (unlike sense roms and aosp roms like miui) which is useful if you care about more than the rom because you like to hack around on the source and don't trust certain roms like miui (no offense, but I am not using a rom made by chinese with no source given, just too creepy for me as far as how much control you are giving them aside from the fact they give back nothing to the community).
For the OP's information, there's plenty of information out there (including articles on wired and many screen casts on youtube) about CM7, besides their own site/wiki/forums/irc channel
there is much about cm7 that you don't know.
start here for a very small list of features... http://www.cyanogenmod.com/about/features
but this list barely scratches the surface. none of my favorite features are even listed here, and the cyanogen settings menu has literally hundreds (thousands?) of additional modifications you can make to your device.
i flashed cm7 for the first time about a month ago, and i won't ever be able to run sense again. i've been converted

yeah tons of features you only wish other roms had most of the time. I love the media track skip via the volume buttons with the screen off (similar to what blackberry does). Makes it way easier to switch songs or repeat one when you are running.
Its cause we want android without all the battery hogging and performance issues associated with crap like motoblur, sense, touchwiz etc. Plus cm7 has so much more features than being basically a asop rom. Its provides a lot of customization with your phone, which is what andrioid is all about.

I like the simplicity of stock-ish Android and all the tweaks and customizations CM offers. Sense is nice and all but way too heavy for my enjoyment.
I've only used CM7 on my nook color and was very impressed by its responsiveness and options. I heard of using Android OS's with overlapping UI but I figured this would only hamper on the overall user experience. I'm def open to different versions of Android for tablets. Any suggestions?
Hello my name is _________, and I'm addicted to CM7..............
Another cool factor is that it's available for so many different phones. I had CM7 on my EVO with Sprint. When I got my Thunderbolt I immediately rooted it and flashed CM7. There is a CM7 build for every major carrier in the U.S., So as long as you chose a supported phone your not stuck with some crappy user interface or an older version of Android. The main reason I chose the Thunderbolt over other Verizon 4G phones was that there was a CM7 ROM for it, but then again I'm an addict.

really? Then why are there all these threads about what is broken on cm7?
to prove my point of cm7 not being all that great on the thunderbolt, from page 1 of the thunderbolt general forums right now:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1185757

Some of my favorite features:
- skip tracks w/vol keys
- swipe notification bar to adjust brightness
- lockscreen gestures
- custom long press home/menu/search options
- long press back to kill current app
- hundreds of themes easily switched via Theme Chooser
- incoming calls in background when screen on
- permission management
- any app to sd
- built in performance and overclocking settings
...just to name a few. The real question is why do so many people have such a deep hatred of CM7? If you don't like the ROM you don't like it. Why make such a big stink out of it? If others want to like it then let them be
^ Shift Faced
i remember putting CM on the first phone i rooted, the MyTouch 3G... and it was the only one i ever used on that phone. This time around, i've experimented and tried out just about every single ROM for the TB. This time i would say that Synergy is my fav only because i managed to get better battery life with it then CM7(and its overclocked).
that plus, i know its ridiculous but i prefer for the green light to come on when the battery is at 100%, not 90%(yes i know that's just how AOSP ROMs are). im just use to going "oh green light, time to unplug".

Some of my favorite features:
- skip tracks w/vol keys
- swipe notification bar to adjust brightness
- lockscreen gestures
- custom long press home/menu/search options
- long press back to kill current app
- hundreds of themes easily switched via Theme Chooser
- incoming calls in background when screen on
- permission management
- any app to sd
- built in performance and overclocking settings
...just to name a few. The real question is why do so many people have such a deep hatred of CM7? If you don't like the ROM you don't like it. Why make such a big stink out of it? If others want to like it then let them be

who says we hate cm7? I just said it wasn't the best thunderbolt ROM. It's quite buggy as far as cm7 builds go.
I guess my point is that if this is your first time using cm7, would you be defending it as much.

Like I said, if you like it you like it. If you don't you don't. Starting threads calling out a particular ROM seems a little haterish.

I think he was just looking for pros and cons of the ROM more than calling it out.
Thread is not titled
"CM7 Sucks!"
I rarely use CM, but I think it is a really good ROM, with a good team behind it. Also, basically anyone who is into rooting/romming/modding their Android phone owes something to the CM team, in one way or another. I personally don't like it because, and this is hard to explain, it is almost too good. Lol. It feels like a stock, out-of-box software. I know there are tons of settings, and it runs great often times, but it just lacks the pizazz that I'm looking for. Not like overly flashy drag your phone down kinda stuff, but just a little something extra.
That being said, I, again, really appreciate the rom. I am currently using it on my Thunderbolt until we get some ROMs based off of the OTA if it ever comes, and have also used it on my D1 and Incredible.
Hey all,
I get my phone tomorrow, and coming from an Incredible 2 that was running paranoid android ROM i am anxious to see what this can do with the same sort of software, bigger screen.
I really like stock roms, and although all the software tricks the s3 does sounds good, I dont think I would use many of them.
So question is, are all the JB roms pretty much stable?
The Incredible 2 was missing any camera features (just wouldnt work) and google now was non existant...
But yeah, which way would you go?
I've tried Synergy ROM and also Paranoid Android. Personally I am loving PA right now. In the most recent stable build 1.9.5 nearly everything was working. There are some minor (to me) things like not being able to send MMS, but the fluidity of JellyBean is so worth it and Google Now works flawlessly. With the screen being as big as it is, the on screen keys don't seem to take up too much room for me, and I've really gotten used to them. It also disables the backlight for the physical keys so they disappear in the phone. Again...with the screen size, hybrid mode is really nice. The dual-pane display make going through setting a lot easier and really it just looks fantastic. One huge part for me was the JB messaging app. The stock TW one just looked so ugly, it made me hate texting...
Anyway, some of the motion features were nice, the ones I used the most were the swipe to capture screenshot and also direct call from messaging (putting the phone up to your ear whilst in a text conversation) but the rest were pretty worthless IMO.
If you don't feel like dealing with a not so functioning camera and a few other bugs, I would go with Synergy. Noticably faster than stock, I even got faster data speeds, too. Just anything but stock haha.
Any more questions let me know.

Personally, it never made much sense to me to run a ROM as your DD that disables basic functions like MMS.
I have tried all the available ROMs just to satisfy my curiosity at that point, but I always end up back with the root66 as it is every bit as fast and fluid as any other ROM (claims that another ROM are noticeably faster than a debloated stock setup are total BS) and every function works perfectly. I do run synergy at times also and it's awesome as well.
I have a setup running NOVA Launcher that is awesome. Apex and Nova where always a bit laggy in previous phones but the response is virtually instant and it's smooth and fluid in the G3 so anybodies claims that another ROM can make this setup noticeably faster are just a placebo IMHO.

Agreed. I think the only reason I don't run stock (or any debloated form of stock is just because I'm flash happy and really like active development of Team Synergy)
I'm running Synergy 1.5 right now - no complaints here. Runs smoothly and I'm also using Nova and not seeing any lag. Recently flashed the leankernel and cpu editor script. Will see if that makes any difference in battery life. Even if it doesn't, I won't be upset because let's face it...I'm a heavy user of the device. I've purchased a couple extra batteries (with a charging cradle) that I can just pop in and out when needed. Best solution for me!
OK, I confess it... I'm a root-n-rom-aholic! Nook color, my old just-replaced Droid X, and my new Nexus 7 all have had many ROMs, kernels, etc. and I've enjoyed, well, most of it.
Now may be different. For starters, I'm a consultant, my phone is tool first, toy second (tablet the other way around). It HAS to work, which is why I ended up custom ROMing my DX - I went through 4 phones before I realized, its the software, stupid! My N7 allows me to continue what I started with my old Nook, only now making a good machine even better.
With the S3, things are a bit different...
First, the darn thing works pretty well, other than battery life, and that may change with then next OTA update to JB. While I'm not very fond of the old ICS interface, in general, if it ain't broke, don't fix it?
Second, unlike my old DX, its still under guarantee, and while I think I could recover from any 'brick,' there is always the chance of not...
and replacement would NOT be inexpensive.
Third, I don't miss root-level backup as much as I might - because all my apk's are backed up from the N7 installation if I ever needed to recover them; data is another matter, as is setting up my Apex launcher, but all doable if I'm stuck.
Anyway, I think right now I'm going to wait for the OTA to JB, see if 'rooting' is still possible after that, then we'll see..
just my $.02
regards, jf
I'll probably mess around somewhat but I've slowly eased off too. My OG Droid ran every ROM available at one point or another. Working camera? Meh, not a big deal.
My Incredible 2 was a little mroe reserved. It worked well with Sense and i didn't like AOSP on it, thoguht it felt weird. So i stuck with a nearly stock Sense 2.1 setup.
SGS3 is better yet. I want to try AOSP but the epic camera app in TW has me shying away, I don't want to lose those features. Do'nt care about the sharesshot or anything but other things are really awesome. On top of that, it has to be stable and everything has to work.
Running Synergy now, mainly because I got too sick and tired of VZ Backup Assistant Plus trying to back **** up.
I'm with you on staying stock for now. Prior to me going with the iPhone full-time, custom ROMs where the best way for me to get a stable experience on my old devices due to the bloated nature of manufacturer custom skins back in the day.
Now that I switched from the iPhone to Android with the Galaxy S3, I don't feel the need to use a custom ROM to get good performance. The only temptation for me to move to JB is for Google Now, but I don't want to lose some of the features of TouchWiz...namely the camera app.

If you wait until the next OTA, rooting may be likely, but you may be stuck with kexec if it breaks our current method of unlocking the bootloader. Adam Outler specifically stated that flashing the leaked aboot image on an OTA other the our current will most likely brick your GS3, so I'd unlock and root now then wait for the next JB OTA to be ported.

Coming from the OG Droid Incredible I miss some root level things -- but I still haven't rooted yet. I think what I'll do is wait for a stable CM rom to be released, make sure to wait it out a bit for some common problems to occur, then go through it.
Some grips I have about the phone, for example the home button is nice.. there was a physical button on the Dinc, it wasn't anything new. Except the fact it wakes the screen. The phone is in my pocket.. seriously.
Messaging app stinks, but so does everything else on the Play store. CM7 messaging app -- I want that back.
Music player stinks, too much bling. If I wanted power amp, I would buy it (and that's better).
The hardware.. now this is where everything shines. The camera is awesome, fast, no slow downs. The 2GB of RAM is nice too with multiasking.
Playing DK 64 and going back and forth was a dream with my Dinc. Not anymore. USB OTG, even better with my USB drives, keyboard/mouse or even wired controllers.
The phone is great while stock, minus some opinions.. you can't please everyone. Some things deserve a toggle though, such as the home button wake screen = off or on? Choices like that would make the Sammy experience even better.
Stable CM for Verizon will be released sometime.. (hopefully). :good:
Im in love with root level access. I started out with the OG Droid. Went thru 4 of those, on purpose. 3 Droid X. 2 Droid Eris. 2 Droid 2. and got 2 SGS3, one for me and one for my sister.
All of which were rooted and rom'd. All except for my sisters. I see no difference in usability with the S3. Just being rom'd allows me to access options quicker.
I use my phone for work and it has not failed me yet.
Only issues sometimes is the forced reboots.
Every device i have ever owned, i have modified it to allow root access. Computers, Tablets, Apple products, Game consoles, and Android.
Just like you im a root n rom aholic.
OK, so my wife is due for an upgrade here soon, and I love my S3 and suggested she get one too, but she hates TW. She prefers pure Google, so I mentioned the Gnex. She's worried that she's picking a lesser phone since the S3 is obviously the more powerful, and CM isn't quite ready yet. What do you guys think? Go with better hardware in the S3, or stick with what she loves in AOSP with the Gnex?

Aosp on the s3 isn't really much of an issue, just considering minor bugs.

Yeah I know, and I run it every now and again, so the nuances don't bother me. However she's not the rooting type, and likes things to work out of the box, which is why I suggested it for her since she likes it so much. The Gnex is a great phone, I just think the s3 is better, so it's my opinion against hers basically.

I'd say sgs3. The sgs3 truly is better than the gnex in battery, signal, screen, ram, camera!!, etc. What is it about TW that she doesn't like? There are several themes that make TW look like aosp. There are ROMs that give aosp look from the beginning.

Just the whole Nature theme. I showed her beans' AOSP TW ROM and she seemed to like it. She had the original galaxy s and had so many problems it gave her a bad impression. She loved her nexus s. I told her the s3 has come a very long way since those days, and JB just makes the entire experience even better. I hope she comes around. The Gnex had its moment, and I agree that the s3 is a much more superior device.
Sent from a land far away...
She also has to remember that the Nexus is now a little over a year old. Unfortunately, two years is about it, in phone life these days. If that.
Well GSIII is (hardware wise) the better phone, you should encourage her to use Beans Build 8 on your GSIII a bit more. I've been using each since Build 2 and the rom has only improved with time and various UI tweaks. I even found a thread on how to enable the nav bar on TW so it's great for me. I'm sure AOSP on here is great but personally its not a perfect substitute for a Nexus.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
S3 for sure. Even though the S3 comes with TouchWiz by default, there are ways to get rid of it. As previously stated, you could put an AOSP rom on her phone (Such as CyanogenMod or AOKP), or you could use Bean's rom. If she doesn't care about the whole phone being TouchWiz, and she just doesn't want her homescreen to be that way, you could always simply use another launcher from the play store such as Apex or Nova.
Go with the S3 for sure. Better specs, along with the ability to use either TouchWiz, AOSP, or a mix of both. On the Galaxy Nexus you are limited to only AOSP.
Thanks for all the input guys. You're only reaffirming my thoughts all along. Not only that, but the Gnex is THREE updates behind on Verizon currently, so I already don't like it. I can't believe Verizon can't get their act together with these friggin updates. It's really quite pathetic.
She'll have a shiny new s3 soon. I guarantee it.

Maybe she will come around to touchwiz on the s3.After having a gnex for a year, I thought I would only use aosp and was crushed when Verizon didn't get the nexus 4. Got the s3 a month and a half ago and I haven't even thought about trying aosp on this because everything just works so nice. If it wasn't for a few key mods that I like, I think I could use the s3 without rooting.

I'll be honest an unrooted S3 has A LOT going on. The notification menu has too many things going on and nearly takes up the whole screen, and the sound effects are annoying after a while. There's also quite a bit of bloat (which is a normal pasttime these days), and as usual it's not removeable. I even trimmed beans' rom down a bit to almost just the bare essentials.
I love this phone and it's a joy to use. Very smooth and fast and having 2GB ram is nice. Looking forward to seeing what Sammy has up its sleeve for the S4.
I installed an AOSP ROM within minutes of activating my S3. Can't stand TW.
There's a pure google 4.2.1 rom under Original Development. AOSP vs TW isn't a reason to pick one phone over another imho. Pick the hardware/form factor that you like then modify as you like.

This may hold true to us here on XDA, but to the tech illiterate like my wife she goes for the looks. Her favorite color is blue, and well... That's all that matters to her. Like I mentioned before, I'm a good husband and won't let her get screwed, so the S3 it is. I'll be rooting it for her and setting it up how she likes it. On the other hand, if I wasn't here, I can guarantee you she'd be picking up a Gnex.
