OK, so my wife is due for an upgrade here soon, and I love my S3 and suggested she get one too, but she hates TW. She prefers pure Google, so I mentioned the Gnex. She's worried that she's picking a lesser phone since the S3 is obviously the more powerful, and CM isn't quite ready yet. What do you guys think? Go with better hardware in the S3, or stick with what she loves in AOSP with the Gnex?

Aosp on the s3 isn't really much of an issue, just considering minor bugs.

Yeah I know, and I run it every now and again, so the nuances don't bother me. However she's not the rooting type, and likes things to work out of the box, which is why I suggested it for her since she likes it so much. The Gnex is a great phone, I just think the s3 is better, so it's my opinion against hers basically.

I'd say sgs3. The sgs3 truly is better than the gnex in battery, signal, screen, ram, camera!!, etc. What is it about TW that she doesn't like? There are several themes that make TW look like aosp. There are ROMs that give aosp look from the beginning.

Just the whole Nature theme. I showed her beans' AOSP TW ROM and she seemed to like it. She had the original galaxy s and had so many problems it gave her a bad impression. She loved her nexus s. I told her the s3 has come a very long way since those days, and JB just makes the entire experience even better. I hope she comes around. The Gnex had its moment, and I agree that the s3 is a much more superior device.
Sent from a land far away...
She also has to remember that the Nexus is now a little over a year old. Unfortunately, two years is about it, in phone life these days. If that.
Well GSIII is (hardware wise) the better phone, you should encourage her to use Beans Build 8 on your GSIII a bit more. I've been using each since Build 2 and the rom has only improved with time and various UI tweaks. I even found a thread on how to enable the nav bar on TW so it's great for me. I'm sure AOSP on here is great but personally its not a perfect substitute for a Nexus.

S3 for sure. Even though the S3 comes with TouchWiz by default, there are ways to get rid of it. As previously stated, you could put an AOSP rom on her phone (Such as CyanogenMod or AOKP), or you could use Bean's rom. If she doesn't care about the whole phone being TouchWiz, and she just doesn't want her homescreen to be that way, you could always simply use another launcher from the play store such as Apex or Nova.
Go with the S3 for sure. Better specs, along with the ability to use either TouchWiz, AOSP, or a mix of both. On the Galaxy Nexus you are limited to only AOSP.
Thanks for all the input guys. You're only reaffirming my thoughts all along. Not only that, but the Gnex is THREE updates behind on Verizon currently, so I already don't like it. I can't believe Verizon can't get their act together with these friggin updates. It's really quite pathetic.
She'll have a shiny new s3 soon. I guarantee it.

Maybe she will come around to touchwiz on the s3.After having a gnex for a year, I thought I would only use aosp and was crushed when Verizon didn't get the nexus 4. Got the s3 a month and a half ago and I haven't even thought about trying aosp on this because everything just works so nice. If it wasn't for a few key mods that I like, I think I could use the s3 without rooting.

I'll be honest an unrooted S3 has A LOT going on. The notification menu has too many things going on and nearly takes up the whole screen, and the sound effects are annoying after a while. There's also quite a bit of bloat (which is a normal pasttime these days), and as usual it's not removeable. I even trimmed beans' rom down a bit to almost just the bare essentials.
I love this phone and it's a joy to use. Very smooth and fast and having 2GB ram is nice. Looking forward to seeing what Sammy has up its sleeve for the S4.
I installed an AOSP ROM within minutes of activating my S3. Can't stand TW.
There's a pure google 4.2.1 rom under Original Development. AOSP vs TW isn't a reason to pick one phone over another imho. Pick the hardware/form factor that you like then modify as you like.

This may hold true to us here on XDA, but to the tech illiterate like my wife she goes for the looks. Her favorite color is blue, and well... That's all that matters to her. Like I mentioned before, I'm a good husband and won't let her get screwed, so the S3 it is. I'll be rooting it for her and setting it up how she likes it. On the other hand, if I wasn't here, I can guarantee you she'd be picking up a Gnex.

I tried to research this everywhere in the forum but was unable to find anything. So, I apologize if this has already been covered. Additionally, I've tried to research this across the rest of the internet, but I have a few questions:
1.) I really don't care for the way the current touchwiz version looks on the Charge, but I really like touchwiz 4.0, which is running on the Samsung GS2. Does anyone know if the Charge will get touchwiz 4.0?
2.) If it's not going to get touchwiz 4.0, and it doesn't look like I should get this phone if I want Cyanogenmod, but I would be happy with a rom that took it down to stock android. I had an Incredible (before I broke it) that was running Cyanogenmod and loved it. What are the chances of getting a pretty stock version of android running on the Charge?
3.) For those with a Charge running Launcher Pro, how has the battery life been?
Thanks for all the help and sorry if I missed something in the other threads.
We probably will get cm. Recently galaxy phones became supported and the charge really is a galaxy phone just called a Droid.

Development is very slow on the fascinate side. The problem is Samsung code. Also, the new ril is a hack job from my understanding so cm is a ways away.
Getting touchwiz 4.0 is just a matter of porting and I believe that's already done or in the works.

the GSM galaxy s phones have official cm...the fascinate/epic have fairly good unofficial versions...however none of these phones are dealing with lte ril...also they all have a lot more people working on cm for it
so basically cm is a longshot, at best
1. I think that TW4 is coming with Gingerbread, or that is when it may show up. If it doesn't come with the GB update that I'm going to assume we're getting, it can likely be ported over much easier then.
2. We may get AOSP/CM at some point, but it could be a while. I do think that as time passes and more people get the phone, and I and others have more time to work on it, we will get a pretty good debloated ROM that is about as stripped down as possible.
3. I don't think most launchers will affect battery life so much as what you have up as widgets on the launcher. If you have TW up without widgets that require data, you'll probably use less battery than LPP or ADW setup with widgets that require background data. The nice thing about using LPP or ADW compared to TW is that they use a less resources usually, and tend to be more configurable.
Ive been an htc and sprint user for ever and i finally switched to verizon and got me the samsung gs3
i know this device is new so development is just getting started.
I hope to see some awesome roms on this phone
cause right now stock i dont like it at all...
im not a fan of touchwiz at all
what is the the go to rom at the moment for this phone
I am actually running stock rom on my phone but theres a thread for CM10 here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1788443
Though I see lots of people posting issues, so I've been staying away from it, and looking into the Touchwiz ROMS more.
I think one of the biggest ways to make touchwiz feel more like stock android experience is to use Apex or Nova launcher.

I am looking into getting the GS3 sometime this week as a Bday gift to myself. Turned 31 today and I am damned tired of my iphone. I had the Moto X2 and I hated it. I was always having to reboot the phone because of lag or it just freezing up. I went to the iphone to get away from this. I had read that because the X2 was one of the 1st duel core phones, there were a lot of issues. The GS3 being a quad core, there is almost zero lag and one of thos issues.
I knw this doesn't relate to the topic and I am sorry. Just really happy to be getting the GS3 to go with my Samsung Tab 2

The international version is the only version of GSIII with quad core. The US variants are dual core S4 (only processor that combined LTE) which benchmark quite favorably against quad core. Just clarifying because this is the Verizon model's thread were discussing this in.
Welcome to the GSIII either way! Overall, this phone has been great for me in almost every capacity.

I just switched from iPhone, I love it. It's so fast you could just run an alternate launcher if you dislike TouchWiz, there's no performance hit. I consider rooting essential for everyday apps but beyond experimentation I have no deep desire to flash a ROM. I'd like Jelly Bean but it's the fastest ICS device I've used even with a skin on it.

Take this with a grain of salt but I went from the moto droid(original) to gs3. rooted the droid, rooted my s3. I found S3 so easy it was almost dummy proof.

Only the Verizon version has any issues with ROMs. The locked bootloader makes custom kernels difficult; you have to bypass it using the kexec method and all this convoluted bull****.
If you want a custom ROM that's relatively easy to get, use a stock ROM like Synergy or Beans. I believe there's a holo theme for Synergy that makes the phone look like stock. Search around the Themes&Apps forum. Personally, I use Synergy 1.7, which has been pretty great.

People are working on getting the bootloader unlocked, but honestly I don't see it happening unless the FCC forces Verizon to do so. Flashing roms isn't that difficult really, but it's certainly not as easy as it was on my OG Moto Droid. Kexec is a workaround which I'm somewhat thankful for I guess. The main problem is there are currently many scary complications that can occur just from flashing any of these non TW roms right now. These problems aren't Verizon S3 specific I hear.
Personally I don't think CM/AOKP etc is worth flashing right now because of kexec and the possibility of losing IMEI/data. Yes the IMEI can be backed up or restored, but what a hassle. I flashed a CM10 nightly and then my data randomly died forever 10 minutes later. Flashing to stock/anything else was useless. Luckily reprovisioning my phone fixed the problem, but if it didn't..
I'm hoping that CM and stuff will be stable/safe within the next month or two but who knows? Verizon probably won't release JB until December or later on the S3.

Agreed. There's still a bit of work that needs to happen in CM10...particularly it dropping data coverage without warning.
I've been using the GS3 since it came out and have had this weird back and forth opinion of TouchWiz and AOSP. I was just wanting to get the opinion of the rest of the community to see if anyone feels the same way I do. Opinion Below:
For some strange reason, I feel better using the Galaxy S III with the TouchWiz UX interface. I used it for a number of months with CM10, but when I was using that interface, I didn't feel like I was using a my Samsung Phone. Even though I had a Galaxy Nexus and loved my time with it (before i dropped it in the river...), the same interface on this particular phone just didn't feel "right". Like I was emulating a completely different version of android. But the moment I loaded CleanRom 5.5.1, all the feeling of the GS3 came back. I can't really explain it, but it just feels good. the software goes to well with the screen size, the way I hold the phone, and (sorry, but) I now love S Voice more than Google's Voice Commands. i can set timers, text people, set events for work and S Voice locks onto my voice so much quicker than when it's older versions.
Again, this is just my opinion, but I would love to hear your reasons for picking one over the other, what killer thing you can't live without, or even why you don't care. I'm down for any conversation.
me too. i tried all the aosp roms and miui. and always find myself going back to stock touchwiz. which is funny. i remember before i bought the phone all i heard was "the only bad thing is it has touchwiz UI" and " touchwiz sucks" and i absolutely love it.
i prefer AOSP
TW but using Nova Launcher and Google Now instead of S Voice.

Basically CM/AOSP/AOKP is the Nexus with better hardware. If you want the same thing but faster that is where you go. If want all the bells and whistles you go TW. It is what you looking for. I stick with TW where all works and run all the 4.1.1/4.1.2/4.2/4.2.1 apps that we can port. I want everything on my $600 device to work . That includes every option that came on the phone. To me breaking the phone to go fast is not an option. Newer options are worthless if all you can do is call if you are lucky. I could call with a brick in the 70's.

I didn't really think of it in those terms, but that's pretty much dead on. with CM10, i did a lot more CPU management, tweaking, and seeing what little things i could change to make the phone break the laws of physics (didn't do it). And with TouchWiz. I kinda just sit back and use my phone as a phone. call, text, watch youtube. I still like to keep my titanium backups synced to dropbox, but not much more.
Random, but every time I load a new ROM that I've never used before, the first thing I do is call one of my parents. Always need to make sure I can send a phone call.
I don't mind touchwiz all that much. Couldn't stand sense or moto blur but tw the isn't all that bad. Throw on apex the launcher and I'm good to go.

Man I'm probably old enough to be your daddy. I been playing and testing for some of the best in the business for a while. If it broke it is not cutting edge. Making broke go faster makes no sense to me. You should be able to make what works go faster and still work. Being on the cutting edge of broke is for the devs not for the masses. Once stable go for it. But if your wife, girlfriend or parents can't get hold of you cause your on cutting edge of broke you have a problem.

I'm currently on Beans stock deodex with Ziggy's latest kernel @1.72/384. Kinda craps mods and Moto's International VRTheme. All Gapps 4.1-4.2 inverted. Rock stable and running 6500 Quads. Everything works including call recording.
I've been flashing for awhile.
At this point (actually - Nov 1st) I've been CleanROM only. Everything "works" + mixed with WasabiWa's themes - I'm a happy man.

I can't imagine AOSP being much faster than TW with the necessary apps frozen. On my old phones AOSP was definitely the way to go, but the S3 is so powerful anyways, and TW isn't very heavy anymore.
And, in all honesty, the TW Camera app alone is worth it for me to stay on TW. All the non-TW camera apps pale in comparison, both in quality and options.

Haha.. made me laugh
I honestly can't stand TW. I have it on my wife's phone because she likes the camera better than the AOSP. But it just seems like TW just tried to be too pretty and to me it didn't make me happy. Even though AOSP has its little bugs, I just like it better. There are no widgets that I'm OMG about really like I was with Sense, for instance their music player, calendar, clock, and Facebook for HTC sense app... of course I prefer sense 3.5 style widgets a little more than 4. So I just stick with MIUI because that was the AOSP that made me fall in love with AOSP. Used to have the Dinc and Dinc2 and it ran flawlessly on both. Just pure love.

This.
I loaded up AOKP and tried that out for awhile. It was lightning fast on pretty much everything, but I just didn't feel like I was using my GS3 that I had fallen in love with. I'm on the stock JB OTA with Kindacrap Mods 2.6 flashed. The small tweaks in there make the phone for me. Everything's a little bit faster and once I found out that I could make the home button faster (my biggest complaint since owning the phone) simply by disabling the S-Voice polling, just more love to be had.
Being able to set separate lock screen and homescreen wallpapers that don't move (used to love the movement, but not so much anymore) is great. S-Beam is awesome. The premium suite will (hopefully) be a wonderful tweak. Samsung and TouchWiz have come a long way since my first Android phone: the Captivate on AT&T.
To me it is not about speed at this point but stability. Top end devices today do not need to go any faster then when you take it out of the box. I still scratch my head when I see people over clocking their S3. This thing already runs faster then some laptops that people own. Also, can't prove anything is faster when overclocking except running a benchmark. Otherwise they all feel the same!
I love the AOSP experience and options but it still has bugs that are important to me on the S3 so I am forced to use TW. Luckily TW is not that bad on the S3 and works well. If an AOSP Rom was bug free I surely would be running it. And don't believe the hype when people tell you AOSP has no bugs. It can run stable but has bugs that prevent me from using it as a daily.
Running Pure's TW Rom right now it works great. Already has part of multi-window cooked in with the bar on the left and all your apps showing. Hopefully next release will actually have the multi window. He also said that he has the ink effect on the lockscreen for the next rls as well. He is always pushing the bar with new features so I am pretty content right now with TW.
CM10.1 kangs have been nothing but stable for me since I got my S3 a few weeks ago. I like the whole interface and experience; hated TW. Call me lucky but I'm 100% satisfied.
I've gone back and forth between AOSP and TW-based ROMS. Besides stability, I do enjoy the extra features that are on the stock framework.
I'm just curious to see how developers will utilize the source code into their ROMS, now that it's out.
I like AOSP if it works. I would easily be on cm10.1 if everything worked, but until then, I think I have to use my phone as a phone

Same here. I ran AOSP on my OG Epic and while I liked it for what our offered, constant struggles with features broken/ not working made me steer clear of it on GS3 until ALL phone functions work as well as they do on TW.
Hey Guys,
My girl has been complaining that her phones been slow and laggy and asking me to "fix" her phone.
I want to throw on a custom rom for her, but need something stable and not buggy at all because she can not trouble shoot herself at all.
I run a cherry picked version of Slimbeam on my ATT s3, but don't know what's popular for you Verizon guys.
I was thinking CleanRom for something not too different then what she is used for but wanted to see if anything else is popular.
I think she doesn't need ASOP being so used to Touchwiz, but definitely want something bloat free etc.
Thank for your help getting me some points with the misses,
Alex
Jellybeans v19 has been what I keep coming back to for the S3. TW based.

If your doing TW then JellyBeans or BoneStock. If you want AOSP, Carbon Rom 10/28.
If she wants TW go with BoneStock, my gf loves it with the purple theme. If she wants aosp go Slim.
Been running and updating Beantown's Jelly Bean ROM since it came out for myself and my wife's phone. To say she (my wife) is technically inclined would be the overstatement of the century however she likes it as opposed to stock. Nice aesthetics and customization but close enough to home she won't get lost.
I have been using tkrom for a while. I love it. Real smooth.

I agree, smoothest rom I've run so far. Couldn't be happier.

Sorry folks, these threads get shut as they always spiral into arguments about which rom is "best"
Users are expected to try them and make their own independent determination as to what suits them.
Wasn't sure if this is more Q&A or not.
Right now I have the evo 3d. Support for it was really good, actually still 2 or 3 developers working with it, so I'm running kitkat on it right now, which has kept me from feeling the need to upgrade right away.
Anyway, like a lot of other people I'm deciding between the m8 and s5, I might wait a little longer just to see what LG drops. I'm not too familiar with how developer friendly the Galaxy line of phones are, specifically the Sprint models. I've read varying opinions from there's little development outside of some TW roms to development is strong.
Developer support is a big deciding factor for me since it can really allow you to prolong the life of your phone, hence why I'm still using my evo 3d, though it's falling apart now and showing its age so its time to finally bite the bullet and upgrade.
Not asking anyone to predict the future on how dev support will be for the s5 but just looking for input on how it's been for the previous Galaxy phones just so I have some idea. Talking TW roms as well as AOSP roms.
Thanks!
Once you get used to using Odin to flash you'll be fine. I find that Samsung Galaxy's (I've now owned Sprints epic 4g touch, S4 and now S5) have always had excellent support here. I generally only root stock to clean up the crap software but on numerous occasions I've used full roms from XDA to see what else is out there.
A few annoyances:
1) Knox is security software that trips when you modify parts of the system and supposedly Sprint can use a tripped Knox counter to refuse warranty work. This has never happened to me however and I've had to swap handsets many times.
2) Samsung is good at getting you hooked on touchwiz and their ecosystem of apps; I like the smart view covers and it's been tough getting it to work on some of the roms available. I also like the Samsung default camera which thankfully works well on most roms, but some functions within the camera weren't available.
3) Root, in my opinion, is required to make Sprint's handsets run optimally. Mostly because you need to remove the crap software, but so far Chainfire has been fantastic getting root out very quickly for most of the handsets/providers within days of release.
Hope this helps!
So why don't you just look in the respective Galaxy phone forums and see for yourself how development is coming along? It's a simple thing to pop in here and there and just see the different ROMs, etc.
The Galaxy line is by far the most popular Android brand right now and as such gets a lot of developer attention.
I just pray @sacs will get an s5. He had the best rom ever for the s4. Id be willing to drop some $ if it would guarantee he got this phone. Kind of worried about development right now haven't seen any devs talking about doing anything for is yet. I guess thats what you get when you get a phone at release.

Unfotunately he won't be. He's devoted to the Note series at the moment, and has not expressed any need to get teh S5

I just jumped from the S2 to the S5 - I was hooked on Dirty Unicorns and SlimBean, so I'm crossing my fingers they release those (or some variant them) for the S5 soon. I've already rooted mine, but just sitting here waiting with a boring stock ROM is killing me!

I'm stewing on it. Cost is an obvious factor but I have an idea on how to pull it off.
If do it won't be likely until May at earliest.
Regardless whether I get or not I'll do what I can to help things move along.
Where is the almighty Myn these days....?

Once we get our trees up Slim will be one of the first I build
The S2 was my first time playing around with custom ROMs, and by the time I got around to it there were already several available - how long does it usually take custom ROMs to hit the community when a new phone comes out? Are we talking months?

Myn switched over to T-mobile years ago, but I don't think he does much develop like he used to

I love Samsung...but looks like the majority of Devs went to the M8...reason why I switched over....both are amazing devices...but I love to have a phones with a lot of options....but im sure both phones with have good support....
