So, if you ever take your kids to the pool, make sure you check your pockets. I discovered that after 45 minutes my phone was in my back pocket of my swim trunks. I let it dry in the sun until I got home, then did the rice thing.
As of now, when I put the battery in, the light on the back flashes on, the phone vibrates, but thats about it.
I called the insurance and have a new one on the way, but its $130 I really didnt have to spend.
I did the same except it was a party so I had to play it cool but the girl who's house I was at flipped out and felt terrible as I pulled it dripping out of my pocket and we went inside and put it in rice. A week later I took it out and it booted up but the digitizer was sadly dead

Yep. What was weird was that after the 45 minutes, there wasnt as much water pouring out as I thought, There wasnt even any under the screen like I would expect, but I would rather pay the money for a full functioning phone than one that onlu partially works. I just am glad its covered. I remember a time when no water damage was covered at all.

dont you just hate when that happens? its happened to me a couple of times, but thankfully my phones at the time were crap so it didnt matter that much to me. but yeah Im glad phones with water damage are covered now, or youd be out around $400 for a brand new phone
Yikes.....
This reminds me of when I was pushed into a pool with my cell phone in my pocket. It was a BB8900 that was ruined. The culprit immediately gave me the cash to buy a new one, thankfully.

What about what you had in your phone, all your data? I think I would go crazy if someone does that to me now. Even though I got everything backed up!

Cuz I am not elidgable for an upgrade until next year and dont have $550 to fork out for the Sensation. I would love to get it, but thats way too much out of pocket for a phone.
Here's a quick tip for people that fall into this trap, never call in and say it got ruined in water or your screen is broken, you always take out the sim and keep it off wait a day and call your provider and tell them your not sure if it's stolen or lost.
They will charge you the $40 dollars and send you the new one, if your phone is not missing or stolen they will not take care of you. This can only happen in one calender year so no insurance jobs. You have to be on an insurance plan prior to this event other wise you pay the whole amount.

Don't know if insurance fraud is something that should be suggested on here. Don't get me wrong, i could care less about how much money insurance companies make off of a claim. But not a good suggestion nonetheless.

I don't carry insurance on my phones because it's a ripoff. Why am I going to pay asurion 5-6 bucks a month for them to send me some crap refurbished phone IF i break or lose my phone. I would rather save my money and buy a used one from someone online for the price of the deductible they are going to charge me IF I file a claim. Btw i have been using cell phones since the brickphones came out and have never broken or lost one yet.

We have a pool at our house, for the most part phones stay well away from the water...but accidents have happened. When we went to seaworld last summer, there were people who were vacuum sealing phones in clear plastic which is a great idea...headed to Walmart and bought the sealer and a pack of small bags...works great for days that we know we will be out there all day. I can even punch a hole through the sealed part at the top and put my phone on a lanyard to wear around my neck

Strange to hear that. Its cool if thats what you do, but the referbs that come from them are certified referbs and have a 6 month warranty. They even cover stolen or lost cell phones. My personal choice has always been to get the insurance. $130 for a like new to me is better than $200 plus for a like new used from someone. jmo
You also mentioned "IF". Thats what insrance is all about the "IF" siutation. I do know that the insuance companies make millions on us because the "IF" usually never happens, but that's life I guess.
Actually it's a known fact, they list it in their disclaimer when you pay for insurance they have to tell you what the terms of service are. It clearly states if damage to any device is a result of the user then you are solely at fault and no claim will be entertained by said warranty, if the device is either stolen or lost under said claim then the deductible will apply and a replacement will be issued over the contract term not to exceed more than 2 times over a calender year.
They basically tell you to not bother if the screen is cracked or the buttons pop off but if it's lost or stolen then give us a call.
I actually dropped my last phone in the water while working on a side job and when I called the customer service person said "Ohh so you lost the phone, we'll send you out a new one then" AFTER I told him what happened.
Their well aware of what happens and mistakes get made but why pay for a service if it's not working for you. I didn't scam anyone nor did I offer any information that wasn't offered to me direct from T-Mobile, I paid my $40.00 dollars and had my phone back in 3 days (My Touch 4G). It's better than paying for the phone out right or second hand.
For those whom think I'm some thief or a scam junky just don't read the suggestion, keep paying top dollar for services you never use and we'll be cool I really don't care either way but for those whom live in the real world and know every penny counts take my advice and keep your investment, what's funny about "those with negative responses to my suggestion" is here you are on a site that's main goal is to develop solutions for software issues not provided by your carrier and freedom of use and the right to use what you pay for on all devices posted here ( Will Void Your Warranty threw your Provider for Using!) has something to say about it.
I love the site and would never have anything bad to say about it, I believe all of the dev's and site staff have a good thing going here and hopefully everyone can learn from all of it as you should, people need to take a bigger step and learn how to do for them selves and others instead of just being sheep and this site supports that.

Do the rice thing with the phone as disassembled as you can, about an inch of rice, the bag full of air and sealed, shake it good (to make the air inside really really dry) and leave it for 48 hours.
That revived my Samsung Blast from completely dead, couldn't even get the charge light to come on.

Thanks for the recommendation but there was no hope for it. It was swimming for 45 minutes at least. Plus I called for replacement right when I found out. I want a fully functioning phone, not one brought back from dearh.....LOL
I hear you there, you know some where down the line it will just give you problems anyways and my phone is everything as far as work goes and knowing where I need to be every day matters when your a tech.
I don't mind taking a risk when the over all out come means I benefit more down the line and being able to fix my own equipment means I make more money later so making sure everything I have works properly is key not only for myself but also my customers.
Ok so heres my situation... I bought the inspire from best buy about 20 days ago on an upgrade, I decided to not get their black tie plan because I did not cause any physical damage to my old captivate so I thought I would be alright to pass on it this time. Until today that is... I had the phone in my back pocket and when I sat down I must have applied some extra pressure to the front and in result the screen in mostly shattered.
So I have decided to come to you guys in search for a few solutions. I noticed that you can add the black tie on up to 30 days from the purchase of your phone but I am doubting whether or not I could convince them to put it on my phone even though the phone is already broken but I was wondering if anyone here has ever had any luck getting this plan on after the damage had been done?
I would hate to think the best buy would really be so ignorant as to make me keep a phone with a shattered screen for the remaining 2 years that is on my contract (granted it is my fault it broke), I would like to think they would help someone in my position out to keep me happy and wanting to return back to their stores.
If there is no chance for this, then what would you guys recommend I do to get this fixed for as little cost as possible.
THANKS!
I just took a captivate that wouldn't turn on and they replaced it with an inspire. So I think they're pretty good about exchanging phones. Unless I just got lucky haha

With a phone that unquestionably has suffered physical damage, I don't think it's reasonable to expect them to go that far in wanting to keep their customers happy.
Unless this "black tie" thing pretty much effectively says "sure, throw your phone off a cliff, drive over it with a semi, we want you happy, so we'll keep giving you phones," then I wouldn't get your hopes up.
But like Matt said, you got nothin' to lose and everything to gain at this point...
You never know what they will do. In December I upgraded to an Aria for $0.01, I did get the black tie coverage. There was a slight issue with the earspeaker and I took it somewhere local so I wouldn't be without my phone for a matter of weeks. Needles to say, that was a mistake. The repair place screwed it up. I took it to best buy and long story short, after sending it off for repair 4 times they have me an Inspire.
I think it is a very good thing to get to know the ppl that work in mobile and not be one of those customers they hate to see come into the store. They all knew me by my first name.lol They have me my choice of phones and I chose the Inspire and have never looked back!
BB its usually quite eager to please the customer, they know if you are happy with their mobile dept. you may buy your next tv there also.

Well, there's a teeny tiny bit of difference between a bad ear speaker and a "mostly shattered" screen, but, who knows...
brick it ..... That is the only solution O.O. I remember while back best buy told me if I bought their protection plan, I could walk out side drive my car over my phone bring it back in and get a new one/ fixed, never tested it though.
Obviously don't buy the Black Tie plan and then immediately whip the phone out of your pocket.... If it was me, I'd take the receipt in and say that I decided to go with the black tie plan after all. Then I'd take it in the next day, or the day after that. It might still look suspicious, but not as.
I took the black tie protection for my laptop and TV. Laptop got its hdd replaced twice, without a question. He opened it, took the old one out, put in the new one, and gave the old one back to me.
In my opinion, its worth the trouble/hassle for 3 years.
Thanks for your help and suggestions guys, I will hopefully go up there tomorrow and basiclly beg thats what I get for not adding it on when I got the phone, just my luck. Btw, I wasnt trying to say that they owed it to anyone to replace it, I was just saying would be a kind gesture to someone, who messed up. All they would have to do is change the screen then sell it refurbished for about 50dollars less than a new one.
Also, why do they allow you to add the black tie within the first 30 days but your excluded if you have already broken it then your not allowed to have it anymore. Just my thoughts on it, please pardon my ramblings..
Thanks again for taking the time to respond though!

Well that's actually encouraging for the op, then. Unless of course they were exaggerating for purposes of selling the program.
I guess the only thing that would concern me is the amount of time the op takes between signing up for the program, and "cashing" in on it, so to speak.
I also don't know if they would require physical inspection of the phone when signing up, if done after the initial sale, when of course the brand new phone is there in front of them...
Just a quick update, I took it in today and they were very kind and helping and because I had the protection plan on my old phone they said they could add it back and and say that the person who sold me the new phone had forgotten to transfer the plan to the new phone.
They told me to wait 2-3 before I bring it back in for repairs because they are usually not allowed to do this to an already broken phone but the manager gave the approval.
Just thought that I would poke back so anyone in this situation in the future will have a bit of hope. And that this is another reason why I continue to get my phones at best buy... great customer service (most of the time) and a protection plan that is too good to pass up.

Congrats. Great news for you.
Try not to shatter the screen on the next one, will ya?
And thanks for posting back. It's always good to hear how these things play out.
Put it this way its like buying a car with out "protection" and just that one day after the 30 days you run into a wall.. Take the car back and say hey I would like to get the protection plan. 99.99% they will ask let me see the car. Just as in example. Its a business. But I have the Black tie and the buy back on my phone because just in case I do drop it its cover, I had it on my last phone they sent it out for a repair go it back in like a week brand new could not even tell. Rather then going through att paying 5$s on it if it get stolen and having to pay a delectable. Heck I even got water on my phone and it was covered. So its worth it to me. On the phones think about its your MOBILE phone you have it on you all the time rather it be in your pocket in case or in case on a belt clip you always have that chance of missing your pocket and your phone slips. and BOOM broken screen. And then your like AHH!! FML! lol

I dont know about rapidly, but they have always been good about replacing my damaged phones. I went through 2 captivates (both took a swim) and they replaced them both, but the process took over 2 weeks. And on my last captivate they let me switch to the Inspire since the Captivate was out of stock.
Here is my update, I took it in a few days after I got the plan added and the guy who helped was very nice. They said that they were doing to do a rapid exchange (still not quite sure what that means but I think it is something along the lines of receiving a refurbished phone) and that they would get my "new" phone in within the next few days which is better than the 27 days I waited to receive my Captivate from being fixed a while back.
What sucks is that I am using my miserably slow iphone 3g until I get the new phone in.
One last question, if I am on the best buy reward zone silver level, does the extended 45 day return policy apply to cell phones? And if so, would I be able to exchange the refurbished inspire for the infuse and pay the difference even though they would have technically given me a refurbished phone?
Thanks!
I feel bad about opening up another thread and I apologize if this is the wrong board for this already, but you guys are without a doubt the most knowledgeable people on phones I've ever read/talked to so I need your advice...
My starting point: Samsung Exhibit 4G (mint condition)
My goal: MT4GS (found a seller willing to give me one for $230)
I'm about to pull the trigger on a phone swap for a MT4G. I also have to throw in $25. Is that a good deal? I feel like it is because then I can sell that MT4G for like $200 then just pay for the rest.

4g slide in good condition on craigslist is in the 275-300 range.
Scratch and dent beat up phones get 100-200 generally.
I've been trying to find a good silver one for a while now, and if I wanted something abused I could get one in a snap. Finding one that's actually been taken care of and will last me a while instead of crapping out immediately takes more $

Exactly. I'm picking one up for $150 tomorrow, hopefully in good enough condition. The guy is a military man so he says he takes care of his stuff, but we'll see. I'm a stickler for cosmetic issues, as I firmly believe it points to other potential hardware faults on the phone. If you drop it a lot, chances are it's not going to function up to snuff. I'm careful to the point where someone might consider it OCD, but whatever because I can sell my phones back as mint condition later on.
I also watch these on eBay. You really don't see many used ones that are cosmetically in great shape. That silver bezel, especially, seems to attract a lot of nicks.
FWIW, YMMV, ....

That silver bezel, and the phone in and of itself, seems to dent easier than playdough! Not the screen, mind you, but everything else. I actually found a really, really good deal on a mint condition LG G2x ($170). What would you say about getting that? I mean it doesn't have the keyboard, but it has a pretty large screen that may work. Not to mention an 8MP camera, 1Ghz dual-core processor. The downsides are less ppi and less ram, and obviously the keyboard. I don't know if I'd be taking a step back or not...

Wow. QFT. Broken already? That's gotta be some kind of record.
Okay, in all seriousness, you do NOT want to swap the digitizer on your own. I used to do my own phone repairs; not anymore.
To do your own repair, you first need the right tools (drivers and such) but let's assume you have 100% of the tools you will need. You also need incredible dexterity and a propensity for light hands. Lastly, if you do finally get the displays swapped out (after a couple hours or so), you need to make sure you have the correct adhesive.
"What adhesive do I need?," you say? "Well, that depends." I have about 8 different electronics adhesives sitting on my workbench and I've never once been able to finish a repair without trying at least two different adhesives.
"What shall I do, deduction?!," you shout back. Worry not, friend! HTC is happy to do the repair for you! Chances are, your warranty on the phone is 100% in tact. (Unless you are hiding the secret S-OFF that the rest of us have been clamoring for - if that's the case, hand it over!) Simply call up HTC's US line for repairs or customer service and they will be happy to take your money in exchange for a top notch, warranty backed digitizer replacement.
Chances are, HTC's price will either be very close to the "street" price (i.e. one of those sketchy "we repair iphone!" cell-phone stores) or quite possibly below the cost of the part itself! I had this happen recently with a different manufacturer, Samsung. My Galaxy Note sustained a badly broken digitizer and the part itself was selling for ~$220 shipped. I just received the phone back from Sammy with a new digitizer costing me a total of $197 after S&H.
Anyway, YMMV and all that. I am curious to hear back what HTC quotes you for new glass - would you mind reporting back to us with a hard dollar amount?
Cheers and good luck!

8/22/12 UPDATE: My HOX has sworn off whiskey and is now leading a sober, healthy lifestyle.
So I switched to AT&T from Sprint in March and got the Note. The GPS stopped working about 5 weeks ago and about 3 weeks ago I exchanged it for a refurbished one at an AT&T repair center. The day after I got the "new" one I traded it for a HOX because I wanted something smaller that I didn't have to worry about having GPS issues.
A few hours ago I unfortunately poured a significant amount of whiskey on it. I didn't have any rice but popped out the sim card and used a hair dryer pointed in the opening. I think it's dry now and while the screen looks fine it is 95% unresponsive to touch so the phone seems to be ruined. Needless to say the water damage strip in the sim slot is bright pink.
Is it even worth begging for mercy at an AT&T store, repair center or over the phone? What might they possibly do? Anyone had a similar experience? Need advice please.
If AT&T won't do something extraordinarily nice for me I guess my only option for a new phone would be the Galaxy Nexus but even $350 will be hard to swallow. Otherwise I guess it's gambling on eBay or craigslist for a really good deal on a Nexus, HOX or GS3. Or a Note if it's a deal that's just too good to pass up. What to do, what to do....this sucks.
Your phone might just die if you use it without first drying all the whiskey inside it. Although it might turn back on, if there still is whiskey, it will kill the circuit or whatever is inside the phone
You could try selling it on eBay for spare parts. Sending it for repair won't do you any good and you are likely not going to find a att store willing to exchange it.

your phone is high. Give it a day or so to sober up.
I dont respond touches after a whiskey either.
Remove the SIM tray. If the indicator there is white, you're ok. If it's red, you're boned.
Since it's already marked as being water damaged do a proper cleaning of it using distilled water and getting some white rice to suck the moisture out overnight. Here's a step-by-step you might want to follow.

funny, my wife does....
You borked your phone, and you expect AT&T to swallow the expense (which in turn will be passed down to its customers)?
Suck it up and buy a new phone.

Believe it or not, I acquired some rice and left the phone in it overnight and it seems to have sobered up. Now it appears the only consequence of phone's drinking binge is a tripped water damage indicator.

How so? You broke your phone and are asking AT&T will do something "extraordinarily nice" for you. Anything they do for you (replace the phone, discount, early upgrade) is money out of their pockets (and ultimately all of ours).
Yes, you also mentioned just buying a new phone. Its my opinion you do that.

I did the same thing back when i had the touch pro 2. Only difference was i was driving and after ending my phone call i put my phone in my cars cup holder. Stupid me forgot that i had a open cup of coffee there. Dropped the phone right in there.
Did the rice thing and the phone wouldn't turn on. I called up HTC and told them what happened. They said to ship them the phone and pay $20 because my phone was the unlocked international model.
A week later i got a call back saying they fixed my phone and they'll be shipping it back for free.
Note: My phone didn't have any warranty because it was international, and also it was more than a year old. I was running a custom rom (NRG energy rom) that should have voided warranty.
HTC didn't charge me anything to fix the phone. I didn't go through AT&T. I went straight to HTC repair center. I don't know if the guy didn't care or it was really good customer service so you might want to try a few times. I don't know why you think it's not worth even asking. What would you lose by trying? If it doesn't work the first time have your wife/girlfriend/sister call and act like an idiot.
Site note: this awesome customer service is what convinced me to only buy HTC phones from there on (and i have).

Interesting testimony. Every other account I've heard on here is that HTC is absolutely brutal with denying warranty service, particularly for water damage. And that your better bet is to go through AT&T.
Considering your nick and avatar, it would have been funnier if the water damage to your phone was due to booze, like the OP.

Yayy first HOX post. You're about to get a few of us coming over who got out SGS2 warrantied out for skyrockets. But we complained and got offered HOX. SO that being said having said that. I suggest you go through att. If you get the right CS rep. They're able to help. Just a suggestion.

I dropped mine in a contaminated puddle and it also became unresponsive. After awhile it finally started working and the only after effect is the pink indicator strip and my recent button no longer lights up. Other than that, it works like a champ.

My EVO 3D survived a swim in the pool.
It took about a week but she is back other than the camera is borked.
I let it dry out in the sun, then completely removed the housing and really cleaned and dried it. Tough little phone good to know the hox is up to a few shots

Bad thing about the HOX is you can't take it apart very easily.

That is a very unfair/inaccurate summary!
Something ****ty happened to the OP, and he fully realizes it's his fault.
OP posts a question about the best course of action, explicitly saying that it would be amazingly kind of at&t to help him out.
He does not "...expect AT&T to swallow the expense..."
I hear what you're saying, redpoint73, but he isn't trying to con anyone (like the bleach comment) or avoid taking responsibility, the dude just wants some advice! Your suggestion to get a Gnex is a good one.
AT&T's job is to make money, they can make money by charging for repairs, make money by trying to have good customer service as a long-term investment, or maybe decide not to help because of the costs. SO, I second someone else's sentiments: might as well contact at&t and/or HTC to see if they will fix it up - I doubt it's cheap, but probably cheaper than new phone, and worse that can happen is they say "no."
If you like the Note, try to wait a while, I think the Note 2 is supposedly going to be announced sept 15. After the announcement, and again after it is actually on sale, I would expect the price of a used Note to drop significantly, $100-200. Good luck!
I very highly doubt it, but if you talk with a manager/higher power, it's possible. I've heard stories of people talking their way out of the replacement fee.
Then again, most of those have been customers for years.
My account, for example, has been active since 1996, and we use AT&T for cell phone, home phone, tv and internet. From that we usually get our way if we talk to upper management
