The cell phone trade game - T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide

I feel bad about opening up another thread and I apologize if this is the wrong board for this already, but you guys are without a doubt the most knowledgeable people on phones I've ever read/talked to so I need your advice...
My starting point: Samsung Exhibit 4G (mint condition)
My goal: MT4GS (found a seller willing to give me one for $230)
I'm about to pull the trigger on a phone swap for a MT4G. I also have to throw in $25. Is that a good deal? I feel like it is because then I can sell that MT4G for like $200 then just pay for the rest.

I was just looking in ebay and i saw a mytouch 4g slide for 170
Sent from my myTouch 4G Slide using Tapatalk 2 Beta-5

Every time I try to get one on Ebay, I feel like I'm getting bamboozled! I've bid on so many auctions in the past few days, to no success. I almost won one for 175, then the seller cancelled the entire thing.

4g slide in good condition on craigslist is in the 275-300 range.
Scratch and dent beat up phones get 100-200 generally.
I've been trying to find a good silver one for a while now, and if I wanted something abused I could get one in a snap. Finding one that's actually been taken care of and will last me a while instead of crapping out immediately takes more $

Exactly. I'm picking one up for $150 tomorrow, hopefully in good enough condition. The guy is a military man so he says he takes care of his stuff, but we'll see. I'm a stickler for cosmetic issues, as I firmly believe it points to other potential hardware faults on the phone. If you drop it a lot, chances are it's not going to function up to snuff. I'm careful to the point where someone might consider it OCD, but whatever because I can sell my phones back as mint condition later on.

I also watch these on eBay. You really don't see many used ones that are cosmetically in great shape. That silver bezel, especially, seems to attract a lot of nicks.
FWIW, YMMV, ....

That silver bezel, and the phone in and of itself, seems to dent easier than playdough! Not the screen, mind you, but everything else. I actually found a really, really good deal on a mint condition LG G2x ($170). What would you say about getting that? I mean it doesn't have the keyboard, but it has a pretty large screen that may work. Not to mention an 8MP camera, 1Ghz dual-core processor. The downsides are less ppi and less ram, and obviously the keyboard. I don't know if I'd be taking a step back or not...

Is $300 a good price for an iPhone 4?

Black iPhone 16Gb. The seller says that the phone is in good condition with no scratches or cracks. However, it has been used. I does not come with any accessories besides the wall charger.

Like others have already suggested, I would suggest considering android for three reasons:
1. I love Android
2. Right now isn't the best time to buy an iPhone 4 because it will soon be outdated by the iPhone 5 (but still a great phone for a couple of years).
3. If you're able to sign up for a new contract, there are some pretty amazing phones out now: (I assume you're in the US because you said $300) like EVO 3D, Sensation, GS2 (soon), etc.
Definitely going iPhone 4? It depends on the condition the phone is in... is the battery totally fried? Is the glass free of major scratches, especially on the display? Are there any dead pixels? Is the phone glued together because it was chainsawed in half? If you can't confidently answer "no" to any of those questions, you're taking a risk. Maybe a small risk, but still a risk. If it's ebay make sure the seller allows refunds.
Assuming there are no such glaring errors and it's just an average iPhone that has been used, $300 is a steal. I would buy it if someone randomly walked up and offered it to me just so I could resell it on ebay and turn a quick profit!
Buy hd2, ip suck

Thanks for your advice, you say right .
(if this is the answer you are looking for)
1. US$300 is a good price for an used/second-handed iPhone.
2. iPhone 4 is still a good phone even for the next 1-2 years.
Considerations tho' :
1. iPhone 4 will be outdated very soon due to iPhone 5
2. Android armada is in general better than any of iOS armada at the moment, especially Android in combination with the new flagships like Sensation, Galaxy SII or EVO 3D. I prefer the EVO 3D since it has a relatively bigger battery capacity.
Not a bad price if you really want the ip4.

I paid 175 bucks for my TB a few months ago. Got more than i paid for. as the reply above me says, the Charge is much more expensive and inferior. Motorolas are cheap, because they are cheaply made. Lower quality screens and since they arent unlocking their bootloaders on verizon, they are getting more money from verizon per handset, offsetting the cost.

Motorola phones have the best build quality, the software is lacking but not the hardware. Every Motorola phone I have had has been built like a tank, including my old X which was extremely light but still a stronger, sturdier phone than anything out. If Motorola phones are cheaply made then all other phone companies could save money and build better phones by taking queues from MOTO.
Just saw this article today also, glad i only paid $150 for mine
As to the motorola comments, i find their phones to be very high quality and durable. If the Droid Bionic had been released before VZW discontinued their unlimited data plan to new smartphone customers, i would have bought one.
I didn't like the cheap feel of the samsung charge though...
If you buy your phones from Verizon retail it's probably one of the more expensive. But if you get them online from Amazon or wirefly you end up saving quite a bit. Ordered my TB on release day from Amazon Wireless for ~200 after taxes/S&H.
I know the Charge is 300 on Verizon's site but you can bring it down to 200 on Amazon. Was going to get my younger brother one but I think he wants to wait if the Bionic actually comes out on the 14th or not.
My thunderbolt was well worth the 250 price

I can say this.. the TB is built pretty solid! I've dropped it a few times.. once on hard flooring.. though the battery came flying out.. not a ding or scratch on the device.
The gorilla glass is pretty solid.

Well damn, I haven't dropped my thunderbolt but its all scratched up. I dropped my X once and other than the tiny ding that put on the corner you wouldn't even be able to tell it had been used. I put my license and a credit card in the same pocket as my thunderbolt and when I pulled out the thunderbolt it had two nicks in the front silver bezel.

When they say the tbolt is the most expensive phone, they are talking about the most expensive to MAKE, not to buy.
On another note, the charge being $300 is bs. It's mostly made out of plastic...

I agree that motorolas are tough phones, my droid 1 was a damn soldier. It fell out of my pocket while I was sitting on top of a 6-foot wall onto concrete with no case. The battery popped out and it dented in the corner on the bottom where it hit but it still worked great. In terms of overall build quality, I know I'll catch **** for this, but the iPhone 4 was just a dead f*cking sexy phone. My androids ran circles around it, backwards, but damn I loved the glass back and its screen was on top of the game for about a full year, which is forever in the smartphone world

I never said i ahve a "friend working at motorola". It's common sense. They are either using inferior hardware/manufacturing techniques, or getting better subsidy from verizon.

anyone know of some sales for this phone?

So Ive been a Sidekick user for a while, but today, I just dropped my phone on some concrete. it was in my hand at my side when I did, but it still shattered the screen pretty badly. its readable, but there are actual tiny shards of it that have been poking me, and i'm afraid to even put it in my pocket for fear it will gets glass in my pants to surprise me later. also, the screen's malfunctioning, acting like it's being touched when it isn't, not registering actual touches, etc. so I need a new phone.
the only phones I'm interested in is another Sidekick ($380), or a mytouch 4g slide (at least $500). problem is, even though my contract has run only a few months, it's actually cheaper to pay the cancellation fee (max $200) and switch to another provider than to buy a new phone unsubsidized, which is all that t-mobile will allow. (T Mobile really screwed up here, huh?)
so since its almost black friday, does anyone know of a good sale on either the Sidekick or the Mytouch 4g slide?
You can get a new touchscreen for $50 on ebay if the rest of the phone is still in good shape.
I bought my Sidekick 4G used off of Craigslist Seattle for $200 back in July or August. It was a month old, came in box, and didn't have a scratch or mark on it. I found that they were selling for more than that on eBay.
If you do decide to get a whole new phone, what would you want for your broken one? I'm interested in it for parts and experiments.
Oh and btw u can sell it to adam for dev purposes like unbrickable mod
Sent from my SGH-T839 using XDA App
That might be the best idea. The only part I'd be using right away would be the earpiece speaker, as mine has a bad crackle. Everything else was for future repairs or hacking, none of which I'm currently anticipating.
yeah, it's not just the screen though, it turns out. I know I've missed at least one text message that was sent to me, and probably more. and maybe incoming calls. I made two calls last night, and at the beginning of one of them, the speaker started out extremely quiet and cut in and out.
come to think of it, that's pretty bad craftsmanship; the phone literally fell only 2 1/2 feet while at walking speed, and has no damage at all to the bezel, chassis etc., yet the internals are now screwed up? not good....
I got a G2x off Ebay for $266.00 with HDMI adapter and case. Brand new.

I'm hitting them by never giving them my business or recommending them to any of my clients. I own a small delivery company and have a PC sales and repair business on the side.so I talk to alot of people during the day and get asked for my opinion on phones often.
Motorola lied and I'm still locked mb865
Just go buy the SGS 3 I promise you will be so much happier... go sell your A2 on Ebay for 200 while you still can (before the next atrix HD is out), and put that toward an SGS 3 off contract....
It will stick to moto, by not buying another phone from them, and make you much happier... I promise the SGS 3 is not like anyother Galaxy yet. It it sturdy and does not feel cheap, and I am getting about 20 hours of heavy use on the battery before a charge. I am putting it on the charger every night at bedtime, and it still has about 35-40% left on it... so...

I have always gotten a feeling of cheaply made hardware from Samsung, though (including the Galaxy S3 as I played with one in-depth at an AT&T store recently). Also, my full upgrade eligibility date is around the end of September which isn't all that far off...plus if I upgrade through Best Buy Mobile before the end of the year they'll give me a $50 gift card on the spot for doing so (they had a promo earlier in the year that you could sign up for).

I have always thought the same thing about Samsung Galaxy hardware, but this is the first one that I have not thought that about, and it is really a HUGE step forward for hardware in a phone. It has LTE, NFC, HD display a dual core 1.5 GHZ CPU that can overclock stable to 1.9 GHZ, and it is butter smooth even with out JB on it... so when JB comes with CM 10, it will be just crazy!!! And the Dev support is nothing short of amazing, and it has only been in peoples hands a little less than a month.
Just like with the A2 I can't say enough good things about it. Don't discount it, I promise it will not disappoint, and it does not have ANYTHING locked down.
When you come up for your upgrade in sept. think about it, and give it a shot.

Yes, I bought a Gen2 Zune back then because I am anti-Apple...before Android was a thing... and M$ pushed it aside and made the Zune HD, with little to no support or upgrades on the original two generations and their loyal buyers.
OOPS, WE SCREWED THAT ONE UP, LETS START OVER. You just know behind the scenes there are ****ty programmers and even ****tier managers making poor decisions.

GO to best buy, and trade the A2 in toward the SGS 3, and use the $50 credit, and you might have to pay 50 bucks... heck I traded my inspire in at BB and I only payed 99 for it, and they gave me 100 for it, and gave me a $50 gift card, so I got the phone for free plus a case and a 32GB SDcard all with out having to pay 1 dollar for the A2....
Just something to think about.
If this phone is locked down to AT&T like our A2 was it will be another epic fail for MOTO!!! Funny how Samsung doesn't bow down to AT&T but MOTO caters to their every whelm. Which goes back to the finger pointing, MOTO says it's up to the carriers and the carriers say it's up to the manufacturer.
I want the SG3... something fierce. I've tried to sell my girlfriend's A2 on eBay and Craig's List -to no avail. She upgraded to it from the first A4G, but doesn't care either way about it. To her, its a phone, and just a phone! Listed at about the sane price as would be the $199.00 new two year contract price.
Question: I see this "feedback" deal here on XDA on my profile and others. So, is that for 1) people selling old or unused devices, and 2) would there be audience here that would prove to have more interested parties to buy other than eBay or Craigslist?

Go to Best buy and get the $50, gift certificate, and do the phone buy back, they should give you 100-150 as a buy back for the A2 even if Craigslist and ebay don't get you a sale.

That's $150 for basically a mint-condition Atrix 2 without a single blemish or nick on the surface/body of the phone anywhere, with the original box, original paperwork, USB charger and cable, etc... now, while a lot of folks keep all that stuff around, not everyone does. I got my Atrix 2 from a pawn shop and while it's in great shape (just a tiny nick on the back side where the plastic surrounding the camera lens is), I don't have any of the other contents so I'd be looking at $50-90 tops, sadly.
Can sell it on craigslist for $125 cash in a few hours more than likely... been considering it based on a) the infamous locked bootloader fiasco and b) AT&T taking their sweet freakin' time with ICS even if Motorola has it ready to go (they probably do at this point, who knows).
I hate companies that make great products then do something stupid with them like the bootloader crap. Sony, ruined years ago. Motorola, getting worse by the day. And don't even get me started on Apple.
I sense that the battery is going to really suck on that new atrix hd.... think about it, the battery is approximately 1700 Mah (like our atrix 2) with a bigger screen, higher resolution and Lte , hopefully the snapdragon wont be a drainer but its still clocked higher than the current atrix 2....
its gonna be problematic like the droid razr...
Go for the Razr Maxx or the upcoming Razr Hd that's the one I'm gonna go for, switching to Verizon when that comes out!

Luckily all of my phones are kept in mint condition with the box and stuff.

That is not totally true... I sold back my inspire 4G to BB when I got the A2, and they gave me 100 gift car for it, and I only paid 99 for it new... and I did not have the box the usb cable or the charger... it was just the phone, heck I even had CM9 rooted and running on it... they told me they did not care, and they even waited while I wiped my data off the phone. They are just going to recycle it, and re-sell it to you as a refurb, or use it as a replacement for thier BB "geak squad" protection.
Might have to look into that with my own Atrix 2 then, but I think in the long run I'd still rather have cold hard cash in the hand than some damned gift certificate/card, especially at Worst Buy. Sorry, had to say it as I've dealt with their crap over the years and still do whenever someone brings me a laptop to fix/optimize/repair and the first words from the client are "I took it to Geek Squad and..." or I spot the stupid little pink sticker on the bottom that confirms yes they did get it hosed/looked over at some Best Buy location.
I'm really disappointed in Motorola at this point. The Atrix 2 is one very nice piece of hardware start to finish, but it's hamstrung by these stupid restrictions. It's more than capable of running Jelly Bean even in spite of missing a few features (no NFC, no "recommended" quad core CPU, etc) but we'll never ever see it and the phone is barely 9 months old.
Seems like the "cycle of obsolescence" is just increased, like Moore's Law I suppose. A few years ago you could count on a solid up within a given period of time (and 9 months to get ICS is ridiculous, period, it just is any way you slice it) and now it looks like companies are literally taking the track of producing somewhat high-end smartphone hardware and 6 months later it's effectively given the heave ho and dismissed for the next big thing.
This is a really sad way of doing things and making the "disposable society" that much worse, every minute that passes.

Yeah I gotta say BB is worst buy... they really do suck... The only reason I got my A2 from them was the trade in, I hated the Inspire and had to get rid of it and I could not give it away and AT&T does not buy back, so... they really are the only game if you intend to trade your old phone back in for a new one.
And the customer service at BB is absolute crap. I fried my A2s bootloader 31 days of owning it, and BB threw the 30 day policy at me... I went literally across the street to the AT&T corp store and walked out with a replacement phone.
But again if you want to trade the A2 for any other phone go to BB and get the 100-150 bucks for it, before it drops lower.
If I had the money (and the good credit) I'd be all over a Galaxy Note right now but, that's a wish that'll never come true so...
Ain't nothing at Best Buy I want to be honest, the Wife still wants a Nook Color/Tablet but, it's just slightly out of our price range for the present/foreseeable future, still on the wish list (but that might actually be doable).
But I can honestly say I'll never directly purchased another Motorola phone unless it's a) branded as a Google Nexus product and b) it has an unlocked bootloader or can be unlocked as easily as "fastboot oem unlock" - I'm just not going to compromise from now on.
Honestly I think a lot of people are moving towards only Nexus-branded hardware. I had a Nexus S recently for a short period of time and it was a blast to own, great piece of hardware and now I find myself wishing I still had it in some respects more than this Atrix 2.
Atrix 2 with Jelly Bean native... that would be a great piece of hardware to own, wouldn't it? It's a crying shame, really.

This is the truth. These are my sentiments exactly. I really hope Google lets Moto do the next Nexus...

T-Mobile Asurion PHP One S Replacement

So I dropped my poor One S for the 300th time and the stalwart little fellow finally decide that enough was enough. The screen shattered.
As it turns out, and at no fault of my own(I would never willful sign up for an insurance plan), I fortuitously have PHP plan and am about to send it in. I was wondering if anyone had been through the process with the One S? Did you get a C2? Can I say: "mother-effer, don't you dare give me a C2 or I will knock on your mama's door and bring the hurt"? Are there any other facts I really should know before I call? Should I just pretend it was stolen and get a second unit because its 130 either way (the digitizer is shattered but still functions, plus I'm pretty handy with a screw driver and a soldering iron, I can still use it for parts or send it to a dev!).
As a bonus, I have a silver One S, I wanted a black one, but tmobs was not selling the black unit at the launch, now they are. Any clever things I can say to convince them to send me over a unit with some Micro Arc Oxidation love? How 'bout asking for an upgrade, the 8X is looking pretty fly right now.
Thanks a bunch cool kids.

T-Mobile only carry the S4 version, not S3. So you dont gotta worry about that, but I called in last week to try and get a replacement so i can get a black One S instead of grey, and they said no... You could try again but they sounded like they were pretty strict about that kinda thing man.
Asurion won't upgrade an insurance plan. If the device isn't in stock they will replace with something they deem simular in specs. But I can promise they will not offer something bigger and better

Actually your only half right, at least about the "bigger" part, but at least you sounded accurate.
3wks ago I got a one S as a replacement for a sensation, I'd say the one S is better.
When my g2 died (within its warranty cycle) the tried to give me one of those god aweful sidekick 4g..not on par.

I had an Amaze that stopped charging - I went through Assurion, and they offered me a One S, definitely a step up.
If you don't like the phone they offer you when you go through the process online, stop there. Keep checking back every few days until they have a properly comparable device. It took me a few days until the One S was offered, and then I jumped on it.

This. I will give it a few goes, but I have sneaking suspicion that they probably have the One S in stock.
