Lg responds to Ice cream sandwich update - T-Mobile LG G2x

My name is john and the supervisor's name is john
John: Hello John. Welcome to LG Electronics U.S.A. Support only. How may I provide you with excellent service today?
John: Hi i own an lg g2x phone
Notice: John transferred John to Joe.
Notice: Joe has joined the chat session.
Notice: John has exited the chat session.
Joe: Hello John
Joe: how may I assist you today?
John: Hi i own an lg g2x phone and i have a question about it
Joe: Sure, I will be happy to help you
Joe: What's your question, John?
John: Lg said that the tmobile g2x will get the ice cream sandwich update in the 3rd Q of this year. where is the update. i have the
unlocked version of the phone
Joe: I am sorry to hear about this.
Joe: Let me see what I can do to assist you with this.
Joe: Phone Operating System updates are developed by both manufacturer (LG) and carrier (T-Mobile, in your case).
Joe: As this is handled in a company-level, we do not have access to detailed information such as the estimated date of release
of the update, or if there is one scheduled for this product.
John: then why did lg says the update is coming in the 3rd q
Joe: We receive notification of the updates once they have been already tested and are available to download from end users, John.
Joe: There is an update for the International Version (LG Optimus 2X, or P990)
John: mine is unlocked shouldn't it get the update too
Joe: Would you please provide the model number from the back of the phone, John?
John: p999dw unlocked
Joe: I understand
Joe: The phone is unlocked, yet it is still a device which hardware and software belongs to T-Mobile (in regards legal). Now, if T-
Mobile does not request LG to develop an update for this specific product, then it will not get released, unfortunately
John: okay
Joe: As for the 'international' model, P990, it shares most of the specifications with the P999, but the software might not work, as they are 2 different devices
John: but i just want to know why on twitter lg says the g2x will get the update
Joe: Don't get me wrong, I would like to know it as well
Joe: As much as I would like to provide you with an answer, unfortunately from upper management we have not received any news on the update for this specific product
John: so that means that tmobile already told lg to make the update for the phone
Joe: it could be, unfortunately as it is handled on a certainly higher level than we have access to, we can not actually confirm or deny this information, John
John: Tmobile says "As of now we have no official information from LG if they plan to make the 4.0 update available for the G2x. There are many rumors online right now, and you can find some pages saying it will and other's saying it will not get the update! I can assure you T-Mobile has not forgotten about our G2x users! We want every customer to have the best possible experience on their phones and we are always looking into new updates and software features on the devices. You can feel free to follow us on Twitter @T-Mobile or on Facebook as we will be posting any software update news there! If you have any specific concerns you would like assistance with on the G2x feel free to let me know and I will be happy to help you!"
Joe: I understand, John
Joe: As the phone's hardware and software belongs to T-Mobile, actually, LG does require them to request us to develop the update. If T-Mobile does not request LG to develop an update for this specific product, then it will not get released, unfortunately
John: ya you already said that. but from this post it looks like they are waiting on you to make the update
Joe: Yes, that is what is understood. I wish I could confirm if it is right or not, but it would be actually handled on a certainly higher level
Joe: We are informed on updates when they are ready to be released so that we can assist the customers on how to perform it
John: well can i get trasfered to a higher level
Joe: But we do not have insider information or direct contact with the engineers that develop them
Joe: I can transfer you to my supervisor if you would like to, John. Would that be okay?
John: yes
Joe: I am sorry I was not able to assist with your request.
Joe: I am happy to forward this session to a supervisor.
John: ok
Joe: Please hold while your session is transferred. I appreciate your patience.
Notice: Joe transferred John to John.
Notice: John has joined the chat session.
Notice: Joe has exited the chat session.
John: hello
John: Good afternoon
John: hello
John: I am afraid that we do not have release information regarding an update for this model phone regardless of what was told by the carrier I cannot make the update work on the phone
John: I apologize to you about this situation
John: what do you mean you cant make the update work on the phone
John: That phone has not received that model
John: what do you mean
John: That there will not be an update for that model phone at least it has not been considered yet
John: Then why did lg lie about releasing the update
John: The date has not been released there will but there is not a date so I cannot tell you when it will happen but at this time it is
not available for this phone
John: I KNOW THAT on twitter lg says the the update will be out in the 3rd Q
John: I understand but the update is not ready yet and it has not been released I do not have a date when it will
John: THEN who has the date
John: YOU THERE

An LG tech support employee is not an LG response. These people have very little information about anything that is going behind the scenes. We have all seen many posts like this that keep going back and forth about what is going to happen. So really everything that has been said is far from a reputable source let alone a statement from LG by LG
Also I'm surprised he talked to you for as long as he did. You got really childish at the end.

As much as I would like to believe we will get official ics, I doubt it considering tmobile has to request it then test it out and add their bloat ware. Although the current jellybean development going on looks very promising

There won't be an LG or T-Mobile release of ICS or JB for the G2X/P999 because T-Mobile doesn't sell it anymore and they won''t dedicate resources to testing firmware/software for a non-current phone unless there's something that needs fixing. The only update promised was GB and T-Mobile fulfilled that promise which is more than I can say for WIND Mobile in Canada which advertised that it's Optimus 2X branded version of the G2X would get an update to GB but never did and never will. We're on our own now, with almost no developers left except for a few very dedicated ones who are trying very hard to make ICS/JB work on the G2X/P999. In future, if anyone is considering getting a phone, get an OMAP one or, better, a Google Nexus which is guaranteed to get Android updates for 18 months from the first date of sale of the phone.

Good job typing in caps like you're yelling to the support agent. Nobody wants to deal with children.

Agreed. Why are you giving this guy such a hard time? He has no control over anything. T-Mobile points their finger at LG and LG points their finger at T-Mobile. This is nothing new. Reading this is just a waste of everyone's time. The title is misleading too. LG didn't respond to ICS Update. They didn't respond to anything. A more appropriate title would be "Me demanding LG to give me my update right now and wasting everyone's time"
What was the point of you heckling them for this update? Did you actually think this made a difference? Good job wasting everyone's time.

I needed a good laugh today.

Cellular South Questions

Hey everyone,
I am one of the device specialists for Cellular South. I don't do any kind of development work, but I will be happy to contribute in any way I can. If anybody has any Cellular South specific questions I'll be glad offer any answers I can. Also, any inside info I get on release dates or anything that may be of interest I'll share that as well.
We are in desperate need of a factory odin flash for the showcase.

so are you here as an Official Rep for Cellular South?
Welcome to XDA, and ditto to what he said above...
You can see my thread where I'm trying to make one (or as close as one as possible) but it would really BE GREAT to have one like every other Carrier has
I will send an email up to see what I can get. Nobody will be in until Monday so I'll keep you posted. I am not here to represent cellular south in anyway and I doubt they would recommend any modifications at all to the showcase. I am just letting you guys know my position and may have access to things that could help advancement and would like to contribute if possible.

sounds good... Well, they may not be willing to just give up the files.. I think the others were leaked...
If you can find out that a factory flash exist or someone that will admit that cell south actually has it, it will be a GREAT starting point
Excellent. I know the guy that would have the answer. But, like you said, it may not be something they have or are willing to share so I'll do some digging and see what I can find.

Super Awesome.
I live in Clinton, Ms and a SUPER android fan. I am sure I will have many questions.
1st off. What is the official release date of the 2.2 android for the showcase? and can you get it to me early?
2nd. do you have the ability to activate unlocked CDMA phones , not purchased @ cell south. (thunderbolt looks tasty!!)

They have not released a date for the 2.2 nor have they shared any other information with employees. From what I understand most of the wait comes from Samsung's end. Unfortunately since we are so small compared to others we tend to be the last carrier the suppliers worry about. We had the same issues with the HTC Hero. Also, with the Hero they went through several versions of 2.1 before they got to one that worked even semi stable and it was released and then a better 2.1 was released a couple months later so if they have a version that they are even testing yet then it honestly probably sucks. 2nd, I do not have the ability to activate unlocked CDMA phones. Cellular South's system uses a method to activate phones that also searches their full inventory. So... If the ESN or MEID hasn't been in Cellular South's inventory at some point in time, the system will reject it and you can't program it. Does it suck? Yes. However, they are supposed to be putting in a new POS system in the next few months. I doubt the conditions change but if for any reason they do I'll let everyone know.

I contacted the guy who does our software releases about a 2.2 release date and this was his response:
"Looking like the end of March but we cannot commit to that date yet."
So there you go. And to be honest I wouldn't expect that at the end of March. They always push the date back several times.

It will get updated to gingerbread at some point, but nobody knows when.
Most of us guessed towards the end of September(about a month after the EP1W GB leak was released publicly)
Here's a fact: Nobody knows exactly when it is coming out. Even the support people at Verizon don't know. They are notified that something is on the way, but they don't tell them until it actually hits the streets.
My opinion, based on info i've gained reading various sources: It should be soon, probably in the next couple weeks. And it won't be EP1W.
I had a brief twitter conversation with p3 a couple days back, asking him if he had heard anything since the leak was released. He didn't offer any info on ETA, but DID say that he knows EP1W is no longer official...in his words, they "blew past" EP1W
This could be good, as personally I consider EP1W rather unstable (in my personal experience) and would love it if the final, official GB release is being developed further to deal with those kinds of issues. But... this could also add significant time to the release cycle as well.

if the release for Gingerbread on the Droid 2/Droid X are any "guidelines", i'd say another 2 months with verizon's release schedule.
On two different occasions with two different people at the Verizon store i was told with authority to expect an update this month (sept). We will see. I tried checking for software updates on the verizon site but it wouldn't let me enter my model, which was strange. I know only the owner's manual was on there but maybe they're getting ready to add something.
I meant the Samsung page- sorry!
When is gingerbread coming to the charge? Not happy with buggy froyo.

While not exactly "official", you have some awesome update options available right now: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1259858, and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1270987
yeah my understanding is there are at least 2 newer versions out beside EP1W. Guess they are still tweaking it a ton. I would have thought we would have it by now, but patience is a virtue I guess.
I would rather wait and get it right, then get it an have it suck.

Well, I for one can say that the Humble ROMs from danalo have been faster and more battery efficient than the stock ROMs from Samsung. So, I would be willing to bet that the Humble ROMs available now are going to be better than whatever Samsung has for the next "official" release.
That is, until Cyanogen starts his development job at Samsung, and gets some really awesome CM-like stuff incorporated into the stock Sammy ROMs.
Should be by the end of the month like the thunderbolt update.can't wait!

The guys at the Costco booth don't work for Verizon for once. The one's at my Costco are incompetent and seem to give two ****s about their job or helping the customer. I would HIGHLY recommend taking anything they tell you with a grain of salt. I find it very hard to believe they would have any true insider information on this.
Anything the guys at the booth are telling you is hogwash. They are just repeating something a co-worker or customer told them. Verizon does not provide those details to salespeople. Even the tech support people only have vague info like "coming soon", or maaaaaaybe a "this month". You can't miss target dates that you never announce in the first place.
VZ's own techs don't know when the update is coming.
I am friends with a tech at one of the local VZ stores & he has no more idea when it's coming than we do.

Exactly right. Verizon does not tell them. Truth be told, most of these guys find out about the software updates when a customer brings in their phone because of a problem the update caused.
Well. I have been using humblecomb and i so far love the rom.

AT&T's position on bootloader unlocking

Today I wrote a complaint to AT&T for interfering with HTC's bootloader unlock and I received this response:
Dear Christopher,
Thank you for contacting AT&T about your wireless service. My name is
Daniel D., and I will be more than happy to assist you with your inquiry
regarding software updates/OS information today.
I apologize for any frustrations that this may have caused you. After
some research, I am happy to inform you that AT&T doesn't interfere with
the software updates that the phone manufacturers provide. The only
stipulation that AT&T would have would be to ensure that the OS would be
optimized for AT&T's network. Please be aware that AT&T doesn't make
software for phones and we would never prevent our customers from
getting a better software update or OS.
We are sorry to hear that you are considering canceling for something
that is out of our control. In this case we recommend that you speak to
the manufacturer of the device. HTC can be reached at 866-449-8358.
If you have any additional questions about this issue, please respond to
this e-mail. If you have a question about another issue, please send us
a new e-mail via the Contact Us link in the lower left-hand corner of

The CSR seems to be indicating that AT&T isn't meddling and that the decision is HTC's. It's vague, non-commital customer service speak and almost certainly not true. . . . He also refers to the bootloader unlock as a software update from the manufacturer, so perhaps he just has no idea what I'm talking about.
I've written back asking for clarification on AT&T's official policy.
I suggest anyone who is unhappy with AT&T's behavior write to customer service and let them know.
It can't hurt to formally let them know that you're not pleased. Even if you're hooked into a contract at the moment, they really do care if you're less willing to renew next time around.

taht's a standard AT&T kiss off letter. They're saying they don't do anything to prevent HTC from sending updates to phones. Not That they aren't preventing the bootloader from being unlocked.
Big Bro does it again
Standard BS reply from the big bro... u know urself nothing in that letter is what they say it to be...
I sort of figured as much and edited my original post to reflect that. . .
It may not help, but I still reckon it doesn't hurt to write a letter or two.

SAFE? Gimme a break... Whatever AT&T keep the bootloaders locked! We will brick countless devices over and over until we find our exploit and you can foot the bill. Or you can let us unlock through HTCdev like the rest of the world and save yourself the time/money.
Oh no wait, that would be the smart thing to do, and you are all Morons.
Att reps have no idea what they're doing. This is a good example.
They basically said the exact same thing about the vivid when it was released. I didn't buy it then and don't know.
But thanks to the heat devs here we are able to unlock it anyway.
They can't stop the brilliant minds at work here.

There was something wrong with this letter, but I fixed it.
The guy has no idea. He doesn't even know what BL Unlock is. And he doesn't realize that AT&T DOES in fact prevent a lot of customers from using different software.
All of this is happen before and all will happen again.
I purchased the vivid right when it came out and we when thru hell to get any development going. Letters were sent to AT&T and HTC and they just laughed in our faces.
We called Mr.Chou a lair openly in the Twitter and facebook pages and to this day, they still claim he was not lying about not locking the bootloaders.
They eventually allowed the unlocking of the bootloader and then we got s-off. It was about 3 moths after release.
By contrast, note the HOX had some holes we have now xploided the the vivid did not have. So I think we have an advantage.
This is XDA some things may be difficult but definitely not impossible.

I wonder if they really know what a boot loader is and what the difference is between locked or unlocked. Also why would they say they don't lock the boot loader? If I was talking to him on the phone (or better yet, in person), I would tell him "Look, grab your HTC Vivid there. Hold down power and Volume down. It will boot into hboot. What do you see at the top?"
Doubt it would of helped though. And oh well. You know, you've just got to have some bumps in the road. We all need to have conversations with head guys over at AT&T every now and then. Laughter is good medicine. And you know what, if they are not cooperative... give them a link to the GFY page (some forums have a GFY button but this does not, defuq is up with that???), and do it yourself.
I do agree, difficult but not impossible. XDA Devs are awesome!
I wonder why this bootlader still isnt officialy unlockable? My new ATT OneX+ with cid CWS_001 is unlockable at HTC dev. I wasnt sure if you guys were aware of that. The plot thickens . Makes no sense to me.. Everyone sell your hox and get a hox+ lol. Bring Rom devs with you!

I haven't noticed any difference in the screen. JB is smooth, Gaming is awesome if you do that. The Hox+ stock feels as smooth as my tweaked Oc'd hox with custom roms. And i'm loving the 64gb! No regrets at all. Wish there was more development... but that'll come. I can test the screens side by side Monday. Left the hox at work. And yes it is ODD that the bootloader is unlockable at launch.

I swear I saw that coming...they were all happy and all fair witha all the HTC elevate members and whoever got the phone before hand and let the bl process be there till the night before...that makes me wonder why!!! Why do they Care so much..Verizon made some really questionable decisions with that device sucks as 16 gb no menu remap(come on?) No sd slot(really?) ....i wish HTC weren't in such a slump right now...they make the best phones in my opinions but when they come to the see US the carriers have them by their balls

Steller In-Store Rep Knowledge </sarcasm>

I just felt like this story was worth sharing.
I did the last baseband update, and with it started using the 21y update since nothing else will work with it. With that came the BSOD (Black Screen of Death), which I'm sure alot of other G2x owners have experienced. Been getting it 3-4 times a day during random usage, not just after phone calls. I have to remove the back cover and battery, turn it back on... 3-4 freakin times a day. Last week I flashed the stock recovery to get it back to factory condition and waited. Finally it happend at a point where I could walk over to the nearby T-Mobile store and show them the freeze, ask for a fix. Here's how it goes...
Me: So this has just happend and happens 3-4 times a day. *Shows him phone won't wake up, turn on, nothing. Pull battery, turn it back on*
Him: How old is your phone?
Me: Got it when it launched, so just over a year.
Him: Well it's got some scratches, lets see what we can do... So tell me honestly, do you charge it overnight?
Me: Yes, I plug it in near my bed and use it as an alarm
Him: You shouldn't do that. You probably fried the battery.
At this point I know he's just BS'ing. It's a software issue, it's been fixed on any custom ROM you use. Also, who doesn't charge their phone overnight. So I'm waiting and waiting while he's doing a device replacement order. About 10 minutes go by then
Him: So this is what's going to happen. You'll get a box and in it will be the new phone. You'll have to take your old phone and keep the sim card, back cover, and battery to use on the new phone. It'll just be a new body.
Me: So I use the same battery with the new phone?
Him: Yeah.
Me: Didn't you just tell me I fried the battery and that's why you're ordering a new phone?
Then he just stares at the phone dumbfounded for several long seconds and responds "Well it might not be that."
SMH, took my phone, grabbed the order confirmation, and left.
Dear T-Mobile... TRAIN YOUR EMPLOYEES!!!
Sorry for the wrong location, completely thought I was in the general section.
Three things:
1)This belongs in general.
2)Store employees don't do tech support for T-Mobile. They aren't trained to do so. They have no need to be trained for such as there's no in-store warranty program. They're sales associates and aren't trained for anything about these phones beyond the specs and features and what the phone can do (in effect what they need to know to sell the phone.) Representatives are trained based on their job type for their line of business, and not all the other ones. Because a representative doesn't provide the answer you're looking for off the top of their head, doesn't mean they aren't trained. There's quite literally thousands and thousands of pieces of information that those people have to remember, and you can't expect them to remember every single thing at any time. This is just a case were you should made sure you're talking to the right person. It's like going to a car dealership and asking a sales person to fix your car. They just sell the cars, they don't fix them.
3)Your warranty is ultimately through the manufacturer, so if T-Mobile isn't helping you contact LG for your warranty. They will definitely be more knowledgeable of the product, and since there is not really a risk of talking to the wrong department, its information that's bound to be accurate.
1) I stated that.
2) Store employees should atleast be trained better then to say something is bad, then tell me to continue to use it. This post was for basic humor.
3) My paid insurance is thru T-Mobile.

4. Just cause it looks like a T-Mobile store doesn't mean it's owned by T-Mobile. There are very few corporate stores out there. Most are just 3rd party companies that have a license to use there name and design for there store. I have dozen of T-Mobile stores in my area but there is only one corporate one. The only way you can tell who they actually are is by looking at the receipt. It will say somewhere on there like "***** Wireless" It's very deceiving but all carriers do it.
well speaking of reps i wanted to ask LG rep on the update for wind mobile as most people know we know have froyo officially, here is how it went down
Mike P: Hello, Guest. Can I help you with anything today?
Guest: hey mike p any status on update for optimus 2x wind, still running froyo
Mike P: The ICS OS upgrade will be initially available for a range of LG smartphones which were released in 2011. The products include: the LG Optimus 2X, the LG Optimus 3D, the LG Optimus LTE,the LG Eclipse
Mike P: Broadly speaking, the ICS OS upgrade will be available on LG’s upgradable smart phones starting from the third quarter of 2012. The detailed schedule and relevant models will be determined based on discussions with the carriers in each market.
Guest: so through out 2012 you went from telling me and i quote "your phone will get the update" to "discussions with carriers"
Mike P: Did you see the two messages that I previously sent?
Guest: can you please tell me which LG phone have officially received an update? not preloaded, but an update?
Mike P: Have you received the three messages that I have sent?
Guest: my last question asks for the phones that have actually recived an update not awaiting
Mike P: The ICS OS upgrade will be initially available for a range of LG smartphones which were released in 2011. The products include: the LG Optimus 2X, the LG Optimus 3D, the LG Optimus LTE,the LG Eclipse
Mike P: "The products include: the LG Optimus 2X, the LG Optimus 3D, the LG Optimus LTE,the LG Eclipse"
Mike P: "LG Optimus 2X, the LG Optimus 3D, the LG Optimus LTE,the LG Eclipse"
Mike P: "starting from the third quarter of 2012"
Mike P: We have not yet reached the third quarter of 2012.
Guest: these are phones awaiting and official update sir, and have received nothing, how about the phone promised on second quarter which of them actually received an update for any carrier?
Mike P: "starting from the third quarter of 2012"
Mike P: We have not yet reached the third quarter of 2012.
Guest: I am asking about second quarter promised phone, the ones meant for second quarter?
Guest: as on the facebook page
Guest: LG Optimus LTE, Prada phone by LG 3.0, the LG Optimus 2X, the LG Optimus Sol, the LG my Touch Q and the LG Eclipse.
Mike P: Yes, this would be the global page that also advises that the times would depend and very on county and carrier.
Guest: dis including optimus 2x which have actually received and update, i dont care where around the world, have any received an update?
Mike P: You would have to check with the different country's. We only deal with Canada.
Guest: are you not allowed you say "we have not released an update?
Mike P: Allowed to say? I cant be any clearer. The update will be released in the third quarter of 2012.
Guest: im not asking with regards to my phone, im asking for any phone that have received an update in the light of me changing my phone

Mike P: Is the only phone that has been released in Canada with ICS on it at the moment.
Guest: thats the L7 not sol
Mike P: Just googled the phone what you are talking about "sol" and its a phone from the U.K
Mike P: ...
Guest: your essentially telling me since the official release of the android source code that not a single lg phone have received an update as planned and your covering for LG

At the moment lg doesn't want to make the same mistake, they are not ready to release ICS. This is the correct and true answer. You can believe what you want. Op, you bought your phone with Froyo, who promised you an update? Updates are free, how can anyone complain? Every android smartphone has a problem in some way or another, but the g2x forums have the most whiners hands down. It was so refreshing to talk to Ricardo and laugh at all the retardedness on these forums. Lastly, didn't most of us get our phones for free?

I sure as hell didn't. My G2's wifi module broke 2 weeks out of warranty. I needed a new phone and wasn't eligible for an upgrade. Even if you got your phone for "free", you're still paying for it monthly versus someone who buys their phones outright.
If LG's software engineers haven't been able to figure out ICS, maybe they need new software engineers. I work for a financial services company and if our coders did this piss poor of a job, they'd be collecting unemployment benefits.
I've had to deal with T-Mobile's staff quite a bit over the past few weeks because of various issues and all I can say is that it has been extremely disappointing. You used to be able to get someone that's knowledgeable almost all the time ... not anymore. I tend to firm but very fair to phone staff. I used to work cust. service and I know how bad it is to get an ahole on the other end of the line. I mentioned some of the issues I've had with my phone and, instead of offering to troubleshoot or to send a replacement device, the rep tries to hard sell me to use the upgrade I'm now eligible for to get a new phone instead. I told them that I'm not comfortable spending money on a new phone if T-Mobile is not going to support it. The rep told me I could always void my warranty and install unofficial software lol. During the course of the call, I had 2 reps acknowledge that there were known issues with the G2x. When I asked why they kept selling them with known issues, I was met with silence. To make a long story short, instead of being offered a solution, the calls all ended with a frustrated customer.

Oh, and how can we complain? How about the 18-month pledge that both LG and T-Mobile signed and casually forgot about. I'm no mathematician, but I don't remember 18 months passing since the G2x was launched.

"For instance, the members of the update partnership could say that a new device should still be able to receive Android OS updates within the first 18 months of release; however, companies would not be obligated to stick to that guideline, and that does not mean that phones would access every new release."
Guess you missed that part. They're not obligated to get out the release, but try to a point. T-Mobile will try and release the update as long as there is one from the manufacturer to begin with (in this case LG).
As long as the phone does everything it was promised to (work) as it goes in the latest GB, you really can't complain.
Now back in the Froyo days, yes, an update was required for sure, so any issues and no one could fix them. But the last two OTA updates for the G2x have made it stable and run fine for the majority of users, so LG did do their part there.
Finally, in case you ask my opinion on LG, no, I would never buy another LG IF it has an Nvidia chip. God I hate them now. An S4 would be nice, and I love their choice of IPS displays. I like their form factor as well, just no Nvidia, they don't know the meaning of open source.

Google really needs to be more heavy handed if it wants to avoid fragmentation. Android is open source. However, Google apps and access to the Play Store are not. Give manufacturers 6 months after a major release of Android to upgrade devices that have hardware capable of handling the software. If they fail to comply, block access to the Play Store for those devices and create a crapstorm for the OEMs. Obviously, you would have to give OEMs a bit of wiggle room if they are running into legit issues and can prove that they are actively working on getting the update out ASAP. This boy scout pledge crap is obviously not working. I doubt Google would have the balls to pull something like what I described.

Block the play store for the majority of their devices? Are you serious? Google would punish itself and the end user more than the supplier.

I got my phone about 10 months ago and had to pay $100 + 2Yr Contract. I most certainly didn't get mine for free. Wish I did though

That looks like a dream come true, but I will stay awake until this happens. Thanks for the news mate.
I have heard similar stories, this is great news for those of us who aren't willing or can't spend $600 on a developer edition phone. I wonder how "soon" soon is ;-)
What are you confused about by the way?

I'm confused about: will they or won't they unlock it? I hope it's true...
Though some chats are very specific to the meaning behind unlock, I can't help but think that this means GSM unlock.

Obviously I hope it's true but I severely doubt it. I mean, how often do low level customer service reps know info like that before we do? Out of the 6 people I talked to at vzw none even knew the phone was shipped early for pre orders...
Hopefully it's not a way to trick the masses into upgrading to block the way we get root now.

This is what I'm thinking as they've been mentioning that specific unlock for some time as part of an early OTA update. I hope it's the bootloader that's really being discussed but I certainly have my doubts.
We can only wait and see.

maybe
Well, I don't believe it either, but there might be some light at the end of the tunnel. I went into chat and asked. I encourage as many people to do this just so verizon may realize there's a huge interest for it. To do this, just go to the verizon page and pretend you're buying the SIII. There's a button that says 'chat with rep', or just wait there for a minute and you will get a popup.
Here's my transcript... If you don't believe me, go do it yourself!
Please hold for a Verizon Wireless sales representative to assist you with your order. Thank you for your patience.
You are now chatting with 'Alesha'
Mike: Hi! I'm interested in the S III but don't like it having the locked bootloader. Will Verizon release an update to unlock the bootloader?
Alesha: Hello. Thank you for visiting our chat service. May I help you with your order today?
Alesha: ?
Alesha: Yes
Mike: This isn't the GSM unlocker so you can use the phone wherever in the world, this is to unlock the bootloader to allow for developers, correct?
Alesha: Right
Mike: and is there an ETA on this?
Alesha: No information released
Mike: OK, well, thank you very much for the information!
Don't believe these Verizon reps for a second. Many of them can't think for themselves and only regurgitate what the higher ups tell them. I worked in their call center last year and most of my co-workers had no idea what rooting, roms, bootloaders, etc. were.
NOT happening.

Not very optimistic:
Dear Alexander,
Thank you for taking the time to email in with regards to the Samsung Galaxy SIII. Alexander, my name is Nick. I hear you with regards to the locked bootloader situation. I too was hoping we would follow suit. Currently we will be offering the developers version of the SIII, which comes with a unlocked bootloader for our customers. I do hope that we make a change to the current model that is out, and that we unlock the bootloader, but currently there are no plans to do so. At the very least I hope that we at least consider selling the unlocked version in a subsidized manner with a contract, as opposed to selling it full retail through Samsung.
Your voices are being heard, and I hope we truly consider some other options for our customers in the development community. In the meantime, really, the only other option I can recommend is to maybe sell your SIII. I am sure you can find someone who may not be interested in the unlocked version, but would like to upgrade to that phone and not be under contract. Remember the 16 GB model starts at $599.99. Depending how much you paid, I would charge as much as possible for the phone since they are coming out on top without the contract, and use the money you get towards the unlocked version. It may not be ideal, but at least there are some options for now.
Thank you for being the best part of Verizon Wireless, Alexander. Take care and have a great week.
Sincerely,
Nick

Can't believe he told you to sell the device.
Yea, that was like a wtf moment. What I interpreted it as was "Buy device for $200, try to gamble it off for at least $400. Then go shell out another $200 and purchase the developer edition."
Not only does that void any chance of insurance but I would purchase the phone unsubsidized if I wanted a "Developer's Phone".
This is a new corporate low even their employees don't like their actions. I work for Apple, we would never tell our customers to do something like that.
EDIT: Just to clarify, no I am not an apple fanboy... I do not own an apple product. Not even an iPod. It's just my job to represent them.
