So I use the FM tuner... a lot. Like 5 days a week 4 - 7 hrs a day and then some on the weekends whenever I'm working in the garage or out hiking around. As such I find it is incredibly hard to find headphones that work with our phone. Sure any set of 3.5mm jacks will work but it doesn't take much to disconnect the FM Tuner and depending on what FM Tuner app you're using really changes what results of that jostling. A lot of headphones, especially the straight jack style are nearly incompatible. Just walking is enough to create the disconnect. It's almost like I can't get the plug in all the way but the thing is bottomed out when I look at it. Fixing it usually involves a short unplug and reinsert then waiting for the FM Tuner app to reactivate. However depending on the headphones being used this could work for 5min or 5s (and lately it seems to be the latter more and more often). I do have much greater success when using 90 degree plugs, although lately even with that I've been using a rubber band to sure that the plug isn't being tugged and disconnecting.
So I'm wondering if anyone else has had similar issues, I kind of wonder if maybe I got some lint in there or something but I use an otterbox with the nice silicon plugs that covers the jack up when not in use so that seems like a stretch.

Use a q-tip and rubbing alcohol of you are gonna clean it. I've never had those issues either. I use mine every day, mine is a little sensitive, a small tug will stop the music but not near as bad as you are experiencing.
I had this same issue on a friends Shift. After a lot of trial and error, we figured out that it was the Tip of the Headphone Jack. It was too long in some cases. So we started to compare a bunch of them. What we found was really weird, but interesting. It seems there is no continuity between Headphone Manufacturers as to how long the Tip of the Jack is. Some were as much as an 1/8" longer. Which is an issue because the jack never seats. So it will pop out at odd times. Basically what we did to solve the issue in his case was find one that worked, and seated well in the socket. Then we measured it, and filed down one of the ones that didn't work correctly. As soon as we did that it was all good. But beware some of the cheaper ones also distorted the sound after we did that. In a few cases we were able to solve that by smoothing the end with progressively finer sand paper. But it was a lot of work. Much easier to just buy the correct size. Just wanted to share a bit of info. Hope that helps .
I have had a problem like this in the past too. For me it was the brand of headphone jack that I was using. I found that some plugs were not going in far enough and contact was not being maintained. Also, make sure your case, if you have one on, is not preventing the plug from inserting all the way.
Prboy is right on. I have also had to file down some of my headphones. Careful not to get em too short though if you do.
Still haven't gotten around to trying any of these suggestions. Working for a brown clad shipping company gets kinda hectic in December.

Just got it about an hour ago. It's small and kinda cool looking.
Good things:
I like how it defaults to only playing the audio when it's actually docked, rather than just pairing when you're close to the dock. I was worried that it would be fighting with my bluetooth headphones. You can manually connect the bluetooth audio while not-docked by going into bluetooth settings.
Things I'd like to change:
1. I listen to mostly podcasts (via BeyondPod) and Pandora on my phone, which don't use the built-in media player. So, the shortcut on the clock app doesn't do anything for me. I'd like to disable the clock app or customize its buttons, or just change which app loads when the phone is docked. Any ideas on how to do this?
2. It doesn't really handle incoming calls gracefully while docked. If you answer the phone without undocking, it will not default to speakerphone (like the palm pre would). If you DO turn on speakerphone, it switches back to the phone speaker, which may or may not be what you want.
To be clear... you can play Pandora over the stereo if you go back to the app drawer or the Pandora widget and play from there, right?
oh yeah, all audio goes through the output, i'm just saying it's a bit annoying to have that clock app come up when I never want to use it.
I gotcha now... yeah, I can imagine. Although I will mostly be using the dock on my nightstand, so that's actually perfect for me. Seems that was their primary intended use of the dock...
Yeah, I'm using it at work and pumping the audio into my desktop. That way I have one set of headphones for computer and phone audio; I can keep listening to my podcasts where I left off, but I can also take OCS calls and so forth on the computer.
It's actually really nice that the dock sends the ringer and alerts through the audio-output because now I don't have to worry about bugging people around me with text message alerts, but I also don't have to adjust the ringer every time I leave my desk.
I understand others could be frustrated with this though. I think they should give you an option to leave the ringer on the phone and only send music to the audio-out.

Yes this gets me as well. It would be nice if the speaker phone went through the line out. I Have my dock hooked up to one of my laptops and from there pipe the sound into my headphones. I would like to be able to hit answer and use the microphone on the phone (in speaker phone mode) and listen through the piped audio of my headset. It is not a major problem but it is somewhat disappointing that there is not finer control over docked behavior
One thing I wanted to add (got mine today)...
You cannot place the phone in the dock while a case is on the phone.
I have the silicone case and thought I might be able to "carve" out the sides to make it work... but no go. Too thick.
It is not such a huge deal for the desktop dock, but I am concerned about the upcoming car dock. I don't really want to carry a "naked" phone.

But it does it every time on mine. Also, the audio quality is terrible out of the 3.5mm jack on the dock. I have my headphones there since I leave them connected at my work desk. It is drastically worse, quiet, tinny, no bass or mid. I don't want to have to connect my headphones every time I dock. All around this was a waste of 45 bucks.
Also to add it will backout fine to the clock screen, but not to the launcher screen.

They have engineers agonizing over every tenth of a mm in thickness, trying hundreds of different coatings to find the ones that look/feel good and (especially in the case of the nexus) are most resistant to scratching. Then people slap a big (often bulky and ugly) case on them and proceed to carry it around in their pocket or bag all the time where it wouldn't get damaged anyway.
I carried my touch cruise around for 2 years and sold it with barely a mark on it, and I even dropped it a couple times. My touch diamond 2 looks brand new after a good 6 months of hard use. The Nexus has a glass screen that can hardly be scratched if you try. Unless you're doing very different things with your phone, I don't think you need to worry much.

I think the bigger worry is dropping the device. They aren't designed to resist scratching/breaking from a significant fall onto pavement/concrete. If you drop it 4+ feet onto concrete you are going to see some damage most likely. A case that's designed to absorb and dissipate shock will help to reduce damage in these instances - the same with a decent screen protector. Now, nothing is going to prevent all damage in some of these scenarios, but for a few bucks to get a bit more protection for a $500+ device is worth it for some people.
With that being said the Nexus One seems much better suited to live without a case for scratch resistance on both the screen and the body of the phone - far better than some of HTC's previous outings with their plastic cases and resistive screens that seemed to scratch quite easily.
Now, I've had some phones fall onto the pavement and they incurred only cosmetic damage. Outside of cracking the glass screen I don't see the Nexus One faring any worse from a fall, but people don't like cosmetic damage either and the skins or thin TPU cases will aid in distributing force from impact and protect the device from scratches/dings for small impacts.
yeah, no doubt there are a few situations where damage could be avoided with a case, but I guess I think of them like those bras people put on the front of their cars. They used to be a lot more popular, then they kinda died out, even though it's certainly still very common for your front bumper to incur damage. I think people just decided it's not worth having the pretty car if you're covering it up all the time. The same goes for putting plastic on your furniture. I don't want to put up with a bulkier device from day 1 just so I can take off the case 3 years from now and see a mint but obsolete device hiding under it. To each their own, of course.

Also you have to make sure not to bump your desk too hard or touch the phone because if it moves in the dock it loses its connection and turns bluetooth off and then your music starts playing through the phones speaker lol. I think overall this thing is no good. I may ebay mine

Something doesn't sound right there....I can literally rock my desk (probably not good for the legs >.>) and it doesn't disconnect - although I've got 2x 24" widescreen monitors that seem like they are getting ready to tip.
Lifting the device from the dock physically does disconnect the audio, but the music player pauses immediately to prevent the music from playing over the phone's speaker until I manually hit play again. Are you using the stock music player?
A quick lift in and out does not cause a disconnect for me, it takes a few seconds (~2 seconds) or being out of the dock to disconnect and pause the music (e.g if I lift it for 1s and then put it back down it doesn't disconect and continues playing audio through BT the entire time). The same if I rock it in the dock manually.

Using slacker radio i do see that it doesn't pause when it disconnects - it does take a few seconds out of the dock still for me for the audio to disconnect, a quick jarring or lift/replace doesn't seem to cause it to disconnect - but then it does play music through the phone speakers. The stock audio player doesn't do this (it pauses until manually resumed).

There is definitely a drop out of lows using the Dock (using my 10 yr old Sennheiser HD 535) compared to the audio jack on the phone itself.

very well said. i would hate to drop my $570 dolla gadget without a case on it. at least with a case i have a 50/50 chance of it not getting damaged or less damaged as bad as it would without one.
If I push on the plastic between the USB & 3.5mm jack, that portion moves & squeaks. It's very little and so far the only real problem I've had with the phone, but it's driving me crazy. It rarely does it through normal use but now I find myself pushing it all the time. If you push in the same area does your phone do the same thing?
Fortunately, there is no real reason to press there unless you enjoy the squeaking sound.

Haha yes I see your points. I did mention, however, that I do push it through normal use occasionally. Most of the time I am just doing it as a Pavlovian response.

More of a creaking than a squeaking, but yes. There really doesn't feel like there is much movement though and the phone still feels solid.
Thought i was the only one, noticed it once when i was plugging in my USB, not really a cause for concern

Yeah, there's a slight squeak/creek on mine as well just to the left of the USB port.
I don't think this is Nexus S specific, however, because the same creak in nearly the same spot existed on my MT4G. Which makes me wonder if this is by design somehow... then again, the tear down on iFixit doesn't reveal anything of note in that location.
No creaking here, even when I hold it right next to my ear and try to get it to squeak.
it sounds like when shaking the phone something is loose around the area of the back camera and/or flash light.. hard to pinpoint exactly where the sound is coming from but it really sounds like it's coming from around the camera.. if you jiggle the phone in your hand you can clearly hear this sound like something inside the phone is banging around...

yup this slight tapping noise from the top where the camera is located or in that area, how strange.... now you have set my OCD off! lol
Never noticed it before, but my guess would be SIM, SDCard, or battery moving around. They can't make the spaces exactly the same size as what goes into them due to manufacturing tolerances, so it could be that there is a little extra space for one of them that allows it to wiggle around some.
no it's not the sdcard, battery or sim card.. it sounds like something inside the camera area.. like by the lens or the camera flash is jiggling around inside..
hold your phone, shake it a little bit and see if you hear anything around that area..

I dropped my phone the other day in the sink (opps)... and after that is when I first noticied this sound.. so I don't know if it was like that from day one and I never noticied or if because I dropped it that caused it to start happening and then I was anal about the phone being okay after I dropped it thus that's when I noticied this sound..

Mine does too. As far as tolerances goes, I was a machinest for 10yrs. I've made everything from hip/knee implants to car parts. If they wanted to make it fit better they could. I use to work with +/-0005. One human hair is about .005.
mechanical engineer here... I give my designs to machinists to make every day...

Well, while I agree with you about being able to make it better, you can't really compare machining tolerances to injection molding tolerances (which is how the bulk of this case was most likely made). There are a lot of factors that go into injection molding that you don't have to worry about with machining (draft angles for example).
Plus, they're making millions of these... the tolerances were probably created such that the probability of the parts not fitting together was reasonably low with respect to the price of each piece, so you can afford to scrap some units. Then there's the statistical variation from lot to lot, etc., etc., ad infinitum.
This is coming from experience in both areas. I'm a mechanical engineer who's designed both big honking machined metal parts and tiny intricate injection molded plastics.
In the end, they're only going to design and manufacture these parts as well as they need to. Sad truth.
true but regarding injection molding it's all how precise the mold is built... you build a mold right on the money, you get a part right on the money..
anyhow back on topic... I don't think it's the ejection molding, etc. that's making this noise.. it almost sounds like the camera lens or flash is lose or something inside the phone right behind the camera lens is moving around. I took the cover off and held the sd card, sim card, battery, etc. in place with my fingers, shook the phone and still hear this sound...
no big deal.. just a little annoying.. when you put the phone up to your ear to answer a call, etc. you can hear this rattling noise inside the phone..
I hear it too. I also hear a similar click, in the same area, when the phone boots up. no biggie though.

Could be an orientation sensor, I remember a phone in the past use to have a tiny rattle to it and thats what it was.
you are right!!!! the sound goes away when you activate the camera app.. infact when you activate the camera app and hold the phone steady you can hear a single click noise from the camera... must be something with the focus, etc.

I hear it too in my brand new Charge. It works great, camera does too. I'm pretty sure it has to do with image stabilization, which is an option in our default camera app. Image stabilization in cameras typically mounts the image sensor on a little rig that can move around independently of the camera body, and has some means of stabilizing it (usually gyroscopes and/or servos). My guess is that Samsung somehow figured out how to make some compact system for providing image stabilization (maybe a magnetorheological fluid?) for such a tiny sensor. I can't really guess how it works, but it does seem to work quite well in producing crisp images.
The fact that the camera rattles slightly all the time except when you're using the camera app would certainly seem to confirm this.
I and many others have had issues with this phone and the headphone jack not registering when you plug headphones in. Sometimes it would work if you pushed really hard, but it would always be picky about movement. I was convinced it was a software or hardware problem, but I have found the cause. Pocket lint! especially when wearing jeans lint can get into the jack and block the contacts. Fortunately this is easy to fix. Just take a thin paper clip, or for the nerdier of us an electronic component like a resister, works even better. If you are like me you have a huge pack of them laying around somewhere in your house. bend the very tip (1/16 of an inch or so) with some needle nose pliers, and with bright light carefully get the lint out, I've had to do it a few time now but it always works! I am mostly posting this because I am still laughing that I took my phone apart to find there was just lint, but hopefully this will help a few of you.
Might wanna take the battery out while performing this if you do use a metal hook.

I do it with it on and everything. There is no power in the headphone jack. plus the battery is way to low powered to do anything (especially if you do it with a resister like me)

After being in the electronics industry for 20+ years, I have learned(sometimes the hard way) to try and remove the power source if possible.

I have had exactly the same problem for last 2-3 weeks... I was getting ready to send the phone to Motorola for repairs.
Stumbled upon this thread and immediately had a feeling that this gotta be it. Took out the battery (usually something bad happens to gadgets when I try to fix them), used a paperclip to take some lint out, and voila! Headphones are back.

Looks like this is just not such a prominent issue (but may be related to the 'headphone jack buzz') but here it is - even when positively connected, movement of the headphone connector causes the signal to either crackle or the headphones icon to disappear completely, as if I had removed the headphones. I initially thought that perhaps the 3.5mm jack I was using was not seating deep enough into the phone, but after taking the top cover off to make sure that was not the case, it seems to happen anyway.
Previous to this phone, I had an HTC EVO 4G, in which case some of those phones had a similar problem. There was a fix however, where you could dig into the phone a little and find a small copper flap that needed to be bent so that the connection between it and the plug itself was much more secure. Does such a surgery exist for the One S? I searched here but nothing much came up, except for the buzz issue with would seem to be more of an HTC screwup with grounding than something to do with the connection.

I initially thought that perhaps the 3.5mm jack I was using was not seating deep enough into the phone, but after taking the top cover off to make sure that was not the case, it seems to happen anyway.
Previous to this phone, I had an HTC EVO 4G, in which case some of those phones had a similar problem. There was a fix however, where you could dig into the phone a little and find a small copper flap that needed to be bent so that the connection between it and the plug itself was much more secure. Does such a surgery exist for the One S? I searched here but nothing much came up, except for the buzz issue with would seem to be more of an HTC screwup with grounding than something to do with the connection.

Gonna send my phone to HTC soon anyway, lets see if they can fix it...
It burns me that stuff like this, which I would consider very important, never seems to come out in the 40 or so 'FIRST REVIEW's all over the web when the device is handed out to reviewers.

We'll, the phone has been out for months and this is the first I've heard of this. I've had problems with some super cheap headphones, but reasonably quality jacks always work. Don't extrapolate from small samples.

I'm pretty sure manufacturers try hard to cherry pick the best of the bunch when sending out review units. Look at reviews for the lg g2x. Look how that turned out when consumers finally got their hands on it

I tested 6 different ones and the problem persists on all of them
