Looks like this is just not such a prominent issue (but may be related to the 'headphone jack buzz') but here it is - even when positively connected, movement of the headphone connector causes the signal to either crackle or the headphones icon to disappear completely, as if I had removed the headphones. I initially thought that perhaps the 3.5mm jack I was using was not seating deep enough into the phone, but after taking the top cover off to make sure that was not the case, it seems to happen anyway.
Previous to this phone, I had an HTC EVO 4G, in which case some of those phones had a similar problem. There was a fix however, where you could dig into the phone a little and find a small copper flap that needed to be bent so that the connection between it and the plug itself was much more secure. Does such a surgery exist for the One S? I searched here but nothing much came up, except for the buzz issue with would seem to be more of an HTC screwup with grounding than something to do with the connection.

It burns me that stuff like this, which I would consider very important, never seems to come out in the 40 or so 'FIRST REVIEW's all over the web when the device is handed out to reviewers.

We'll, the phone has been out for months and this is the first I've heard of this. I've had problems with some super cheap headphones, but reasonably quality jacks always work. Don't extrapolate from small samples.

I'm pretty sure manufacturers try hard to cherry pick the best of the bunch when sending out review units. Look at reviews for the lg g2x. Look how that turned out when consumers finally got their hands on it

If I push on the plastic between the USB & 3.5mm jack, that portion moves & squeaks. It's very little and so far the only real problem I've had with the phone, but it's driving me crazy. It rarely does it through normal use but now I find myself pushing it all the time. If you push in the same area does your phone do the same thing?
Fortunately, there is no real reason to press there unless you enjoy the squeaking sound.

Haha yes I see your points. I did mention, however, that I do push it through normal use occasionally. Most of the time I am just doing it as a Pavlovian response.

More of a creaking than a squeaking, but yes. There really doesn't feel like there is much movement though and the phone still feels solid.
Thought i was the only one, noticed it once when i was plugging in my USB, not really a cause for concern

Yeah, there's a slight squeak/creek on mine as well just to the left of the USB port.
I don't think this is Nexus S specific, however, because the same creak in nearly the same spot existed on my MT4G. Which makes me wonder if this is by design somehow... then again, the tear down on iFixit doesn't reveal anything of note in that location.
No creaking here, even when I hold it right next to my ear and try to get it to squeak.
it sounds like when shaking the phone something is loose around the area of the back camera and/or flash light.. hard to pinpoint exactly where the sound is coming from but it really sounds like it's coming from around the camera.. if you jiggle the phone in your hand you can clearly hear this sound like something inside the phone is banging around...

yup this slight tapping noise from the top where the camera is located or in that area, how strange.... now you have set my OCD off! lol
Never noticed it before, but my guess would be SIM, SDCard, or battery moving around. They can't make the spaces exactly the same size as what goes into them due to manufacturing tolerances, so it could be that there is a little extra space for one of them that allows it to wiggle around some.
no it's not the sdcard, battery or sim card.. it sounds like something inside the camera area.. like by the lens or the camera flash is jiggling around inside..
hold your phone, shake it a little bit and see if you hear anything around that area..

I dropped my phone the other day in the sink (opps)... and after that is when I first noticied this sound.. so I don't know if it was like that from day one and I never noticied or if because I dropped it that caused it to start happening and then I was anal about the phone being okay after I dropped it thus that's when I noticied this sound..

Mine does too. As far as tolerances goes, I was a machinest for 10yrs. I've made everything from hip/knee implants to car parts. If they wanted to make it fit better they could. I use to work with +/-0005. One human hair is about .005.

Well, while I agree with you about being able to make it better, you can't really compare machining tolerances to injection molding tolerances (which is how the bulk of this case was most likely made). There are a lot of factors that go into injection molding that you don't have to worry about with machining (draft angles for example).
Plus, they're making millions of these... the tolerances were probably created such that the probability of the parts not fitting together was reasonably low with respect to the price of each piece, so you can afford to scrap some units. Then there's the statistical variation from lot to lot, etc., etc., ad infinitum.
This is coming from experience in both areas. I'm a mechanical engineer who's designed both big honking machined metal parts and tiny intricate injection molded plastics.
In the end, they're only going to design and manufacture these parts as well as they need to. Sad truth.
true but regarding injection molding it's all how precise the mold is built... you build a mold right on the money, you get a part right on the money..
anyhow back on topic... I don't think it's the ejection molding, etc. that's making this noise.. it almost sounds like the camera lens or flash is lose or something inside the phone right behind the camera lens is moving around. I took the cover off and held the sd card, sim card, battery, etc. in place with my fingers, shook the phone and still hear this sound...
no big deal.. just a little annoying.. when you put the phone up to your ear to answer a call, etc. you can hear this rattling noise inside the phone..
I hear it too. I also hear a similar click, in the same area, when the phone boots up. no biggie though.

Its definitely the camera, once you activate the camera app the sound is gone if you trying wiggling it around again. Very strange.

Could be an orientation sensor, I remember a phone in the past use to have a tiny rattle to it and thats what it was.
you are right!!!! the sound goes away when you activate the camera app.. infact when you activate the camera app and hold the phone steady you can hear a single click noise from the camera... must be something with the focus, etc.

I hear it too in my brand new Charge. It works great, camera does too. I'm pretty sure it has to do with image stabilization, which is an option in our default camera app. Image stabilization in cameras typically mounts the image sensor on a little rig that can move around independently of the camera body, and has some means of stabilizing it (usually gyroscopes and/or servos). My guess is that Samsung somehow figured out how to make some compact system for providing image stabilization (maybe a magnetorheological fluid?) for such a tiny sensor. I can't really guess how it works, but it does seem to work quite well in producing crisp images.
The fact that the camera rattles slightly all the time except when you're using the camera app would certainly seem to confirm this.

Then, to make it even better, let's have the case made of polycarbonate so it can bend. And to help with even better design, let's make the connectors so thin and crappy that bending them at all stresses them enough to make it not spring back up, and then trying to bend it back will likely snap the connectors. Because we need ideal antenna design, never mind the fact that an antenna is useless when it can't connect to the modem that needs it.
HTC has pulled this idiocy before, it happened with the Desire HD's GPS, it happened with the Sensation's WiFi and touch screen, now it's happening again. It is beyond me why they insist on doing this when Samsung is getting by perfectly fine by just having the antennas sit beneath the case. What happened to plastic being RF transparent? This is probably one of the few things that really riles me up about HTC, simply because they never seem to realize why the Galaxy S2 and S3 are more popular. When they can't even get basic antennas right, how do they expect people to be repeat customers?
EDIT: No, this doesn't affect the phone when everything is fine, but this can be part of the reason why there are wifi issues/general reception problems.
I'm sorry to hear about your experience, but it is probably just you or a software problem. I have played with many H1X's, including 2 of which are my own, and never had the problem you described. Perhaps you have a defective unit?

I don't own an H1X, I have a Desire HD but frequent multiple device forums.
Yes, you may not have a problem, but this design makes it incredibly easy to break Wifi/BT, and any other antennas that are connected to the phone in this manner.
Yes, if the connection breaks, it is a defective unit. My problem is that if you squeeze the back case often enough or have the phone overheat (likely if you have the Tegra 3 variant and use it as an in car GPS) then you will destroy the connection. Designs where the antennas are not in the case will never have this happen unless you somehow physically melt the connection between the antenna and motherboard or it is torn off, both are incredibly unlikely to happen.
It doesn't matter whether your phone has this issue, it is likely to happen and HTC needs to be pressured into changing their designs so this issue never crops up again.

I guess that explains why my first One X had no wifi (could never connect0 and it was that top left glass corner lifted up enough from the device that light came out of the crack.
But guess what? Got another while I wait on my warranty repair (no exchange because no stock).

But in case you're wondering despite HTC being abandoned by "expert" users aka xda members () HTC's customer satisfaction ranking has always been higher than Samsung. Google it.

There is no problem with the connectors, and as far as I can tell, touchscreen problems only exist when swapping batteries, and continuously chatting then in the phone. If you use an external charger and swap batteries, there is no problem. So its not the connector, but static buildup from continuously charging dead batteries. Yes it is a problembut goes away when using the phone as intended(charging just one battery per charge cycle).

The problem was the fact that the touchscreen grounding was on a spring that was supposed to touch the phone, and over time if you removed the back cover often enough it would start losing contact.
From the tear down pics there isn't much thats not built right onto the mobo. I have used many android phones, and really enjor the One X, I just think a lot of people don't give the device a chance. I mean I have had a few software issues, but nothing that makes me want to return the phone, it will all get fixed in time.

The problem is with the antenna connectors. I would not be so concerned if there was a ribbon cable or something that connected antennas to the motherboard, but I know that the type of design that they use is very easily broken.

My connection seems to flicker. It'll be five bars but then out of nowhere I'd lose my connection for like 3 seconds. Very annoying. I have a ht24
Most every HTC phone nowadays has that antenna design; my Rezound also use spring connectors to the seperate backplate antennas. I have pits in my antennas from use, but no significant signal loss thanks to the rigid case design keeping the connections solid.
The relatively flexible case of the HOX really could interfere and needs a different connection method. The battery is non-removable, yet they just stuck with what they knew how to do anyway.

Probably because it's a working, effective design that has been implemented in almost every phone they make. No reason to change it. What's the term... "tried and true".
My old HTC Aria had the most flexible back cover ever, and the connection was fine after over 2 years of non stop service. I'm sure this phone won't have any issues, especially considering it is a unibody design.

On the other hand, my reception has been great. There is even this one crazy spot where I'd never get reception or data connectivity at work and now with this phone it actually works in said location! Love it.

You're holding it wrong.
I wish an "engineering" team built the one x, but they used a new "design" team because they wanted it to be stylish. Ponderous. Why worry about the back/shape of a phone when the majority puts it in a case and will never see or feel the back. Build quality should be the driving force, not design. Antennas should be HARD WIRED, period. All these pogo or spring style connectors have issues. I work with point to point wireless links and any connector has loss. 1db loss on a good connector. Spring and pogo are a bad idea and definitely causing too much loss.
I have an Inspire and TFPrime. Two big offenders. I have cleaned and retensioned all three on the inspire and it helped for about 3 mos, but GPS is getting flaky again. Going to HARD WIRE GPS antenna and be done with it. Basically what HTC should have done from the start.

So I use the FM tuner... a lot. Like 5 days a week 4 - 7 hrs a day and then some on the weekends whenever I'm working in the garage or out hiking around. As such I find it is incredibly hard to find headphones that work with our phone. Sure any set of 3.5mm jacks will work but it doesn't take much to disconnect the FM Tuner and depending on what FM Tuner app you're using really changes what results of that jostling. A lot of headphones, especially the straight jack style are nearly incompatible. Just walking is enough to create the disconnect. It's almost like I can't get the plug in all the way but the thing is bottomed out when I look at it. Fixing it usually involves a short unplug and reinsert then waiting for the FM Tuner app to reactivate. However depending on the headphones being used this could work for 5min or 5s (and lately it seems to be the latter more and more often). I do have much greater success when using 90 degree plugs, although lately even with that I've been using a rubber band to sure that the plug isn't being tugged and disconnecting.
So I'm wondering if anyone else has had similar issues, I kind of wonder if maybe I got some lint in there or something but I use an otterbox with the nice silicon plugs that covers the jack up when not in use so that seems like a stretch.

I use an FM tuner (both from Sense ROMs and CM7) and have not had the issues you've described. I don't use it nearly as frequently as yourself though as it sounds progressive it's likely not a manufacturer defect. I'd vote something wrong with the jack whether blockage or HW wearing out.

Use a q-tip and rubbing alcohol of you are gonna clean it. I've never had those issues either. I use mine every day, mine is a little sensitive, a small tug will stop the music but not near as bad as you are experiencing.
I had this same issue on a friends Shift. After a lot of trial and error, we figured out that it was the Tip of the Headphone Jack. It was too long in some cases. So we started to compare a bunch of them. What we found was really weird, but interesting. It seems there is no continuity between Headphone Manufacturers as to how long the Tip of the Jack is. Some were as much as an 1/8" longer. Which is an issue because the jack never seats. So it will pop out at odd times. Basically what we did to solve the issue in his case was find one that worked, and seated well in the socket. Then we measured it, and filed down one of the ones that didn't work correctly. As soon as we did that it was all good. But beware some of the cheaper ones also distorted the sound after we did that. In a few cases we were able to solve that by smoothing the end with progressively finer sand paper. But it was a lot of work. Much easier to just buy the correct size. Just wanted to share a bit of info. Hope that helps .
I have had a problem like this in the past too. For me it was the brand of headphone jack that I was using. I found that some plugs were not going in far enough and contact was not being maintained. Also, make sure your case, if you have one on, is not preventing the plug from inserting all the way.
Prboy is right on. I have also had to file down some of my headphones. Careful not to get em too short though if you do.
Still haven't gotten around to trying any of these suggestions. Working for a brown clad shipping company gets kinda hectic in December.

So all of the sudden the main microphone on the bottom of the phone stopped working. So I can only talk now using earbuds or on speakerphone, and ran the diagnostics which said contact samsung, who put me in touch with some third party.
Does anyone know if it's something I could repair myself or do I have to take it in to be fixed and about how much would each cost.
The only phones I have repaired before ha a straight class no curve. And no longer have a precise digital hotplate.
Or are there a another things I should be considering here? I have tried to look to see if there is dirt or anything but even using a jewelers loupe I couldn't really see anything.

What happened before the "all of the sudden"?
If there was dirt in the inlet channel to the microphone, the microphone should pick up muffled sounds during the propagation of a strong acoustic wave.
What produced the message on the screen you attached?
If it's a hardware defect in the phone then you won't fix it yourself cheaper than at a service center, because you don't have spare parts and experience.
Usually immediately before the repair you should be informed of the cost. Calculate if it is cost-effective for you. Sometimes after such repairs there are further problems, because the main cause has not been removed
If it was blown or had a puncture, deformation or dirt then yes there would be some distorted sounds but I have tried recording audio in other apps.
There is a very short like disconnection click when recording out of that mic. Doesn't happen when I record from the other mic. But does make the same click of I start voice recorder but then no voice.
Didn't drop it or get it or get it dirty. Maybe I got a little moisture on it whenever I take a shower, but really not much, and the mic sealed. If it was the pcb board for the mic, that's like 15-20 on eBay, and if it's the actual mic like wiring, or driver I would just need the part number for the mic.
The image on the screen is from when you go through: Device care, then diagnostics. It gives the options to test all the functions that make your phone usable. I did then I reformatted. Did the tests again.
Yes you are right they said they couldn't give a price but maybe around 150.
I just sort of like fixing things yet have never attempted removing curved screen and without precise temp control I would worry about the battery.
I have most the tools and have removed flat screen glass on a 3d printers base hot plate. But because of the curve I wonder if it would need something to hear the edge at the same time.
I'm also on workers comp right now trying to save some money and curious if anyone has had a similar experience or at least had success fixing hardware problems or curved glass phones
Also just figured out that I can use my earbuds with bixby but can not get bixby or google to do voice to text through my Galaxy buds
