Desire S keeps rebooting, wifi won't connect - HTC Desire S

Hi,
This is my first post.
My partner had a Desire S and it's got an odd problem.
First things first, it's stock and not rooted.
It's been working fine and then wifi started to give errors.
When switched on it said 'turning on' and then went to state error.
Switching wifi off, then back on fixed it.
This happened once a week or so for a month. Then it got worse.....
Wifi just wouldn't switch on. Either permanently 'turning on' or 'error' state.
So I downloaded the RRU for ICS and put that on, it was originally running gingerbread . Same problem.
Hardware issue I thought.
And now it's got worse.
Now the phone is rebooting every 5 to 10 mins. Unless it's connected to power.
I tried it with aeroplane mode so wifi was disabled and that doesn't help. Battery has been pulled many times.
Any thoughts before it gets thrown out of the window?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Model: HTC Desire S S510e
Android: 4.04
Sense : 3.6
Software: 14.01. 401.2 710RD

As you have already RUUed to the latest version, which most of the time fixes software issues, I believe its a hardware problem.
You can try to RUU again if that helps.
On the hardware side, it seems the phone is having a hard time communicatin on the wifi modem, you might want to take off the camera cover and check from there. If not, might need to replace wifi chip.
Or better yet, send it to HTC for repairs.

[Q] Sensation crashing constantly

I have a HTC sensation (non branded european version) for about 5 months now, and lately its been crashing constantly, it just goes black and is completely turned off.
Most of the time this happens when its in my pocket.
I'm running the original rom, its not rooted, and i did a factory reset last week.
The problem was gone for a couple of days, but its back again.
I assume its an app that's causing it to crash, but i can't figure out what app.
I'm not sure because it seems that everytime it crashes and i restart it, a program that uses the internet has an update. For example whatsapp, twitter, wordfeud etc.
I tried disabeling wifi, that didn't help. I disabled the mobile network now to see if its internet related, but its not an option to keep that disabled ofcourse.
I removed a couple of apps, but that didn't solve the problem.
Hope someone can help.
If a phone reboots...its typically software related
If it shuts all the way off...its usually battery related.
Call HTC about them sending a replacement battery. Tell them Tmobile told you to call them and you need it for troubleshooting testing.

I can't help, however can report that I have similar issues.
Though I get crashes as well during normal operation such as:
- getting a phone call
- opening up Google Maps (or any GPS app)
- receiving SMS messages
- starting the camera
And all with stock software.
I have a same problem. I cant figure it out. When i turn on my phone battery is around %6 . but normally its around %70. When i restart again it turns normal %70. is it same on your device ?
thnx for the replies! I indeed have weird and incorrect readouts from the battery after restarting, and it doesn´t crash when on the charger.
I realy hope its the battery, i´l call HTC right away to see if they can send me a replacement battery.

Hey... I am facing exactly the same issue. Replacing the battery fixed it or not?
Same here. I also noticed that if I changed my wallpaper, it reverts back to the default phase beam wallpaper on the next boot.
Updating to this firmware
DOWNLOAD 3.32.531.14 710RD (TMO ONLY [THX GROGG88]): http://goo.gl/JCWEO
MD5: 79EDF95337826DF73083E227DB8DE7C3 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459767 seemed to fix it for me.
It probably shouldn't have, because the firmware is supposed to be the same as previous except for the radio.
Maybe it'll work for you guys.
Had the same problem, it shutsdown when receiving phone calls.... Like the previous post said it must be battery problem.. i did this fix and my phone has not shut down randomly.. this fix will tighten the battery contact with the terminals...try it first, Its a simple fix

Had this same problem on stock sensation . Once I rooted and installed custom rom the problem went Away! Never to return.
I truly believe and its been proven that custom Roms are MORE stable than stock. After installation of the custom rom , the issue of restarting NEVER RETURNED! Not a problem anymore . It's a software issue. It can be fixed with different software . It's a known issue.

I rooted since warrenty is over, I had the problem on stock rom, hungarian t mobile one, and now the problem starts to come back on a custom rom also, but not form the first day, it must be something related to software... i have two batteries and it did not fix the issue, i dont think the battery is the problem, one is original the other (i mostly use) is an anker battery... quite cool since longer standby...
how can i debug and read logs or dumps about the error?
scenarios when my phone shuts off:
- receiving a call after ringing once or twice (not always)
- during talking on the phone
- when i call someone after ringing once or twice (not always)
- starting camera and using it to make a picture in the moment of flash
- sometimes just when its in my pocket, later i pick it out and wonder its again turned off: D´OH!
most stable workaround which lasts usually half a day (remove battery)
have you any ideas how I can read dumps or logs?
thanks

[Q] Screen not turning off

Anyone else having a problem when trying to turn their screen off? My screen turns off and then immediately turns back on and brings me to the lock-screen. I have to press the power button 3-4 times in order for me to turn the screen off and keep it off. I use a case, but even with the case removed this still happens. VERY annoying, any help would greatly be appreciated!
EDIT: This happens to me on every rom I flash, I've used ARHD, InsertCoin, Pyramid3D, Sense-O-Maniac, and am currently running Hypernonsense. Same problem persists throughout, so I'm guessing the rom is not the problem
That is a very known issue, if you are on stock rom and recovery, you would be able to download an update from HTC, (if you live in Europe or USA) that would "delete" the error.
I'm having the same issue as well. Although it's a small little error, it can get annoying/irritating. My phone is fully updated from HTC and I'm having this problem.

same here
Yes, I have the same problem, occurred exactly right after the Android version upgrade of my Sensation.
I'm in touch with HTC support, but of course like all support channels, it's very hard for the guys to understand what the symptoms are. I keep telling them that I can't see any networks to try to connect and the guys keep telling me to disable mac filtering on my access point...
Anyway, I'm on it. If I can reach a solution, I'll let you know.
update
OK, here we go...
I have removed the SIM card.
I left the microSD inside.
I did a factory reset.
WiFi works perfect... After one hour it is still OK.
I shut down and insert the SIM card.
The auto-config for APN starts and triggers the 3G connection.
3G is fine.
But WiFi is dead.
Again, it detects the APs nearby but then it shuts down in one second...
Then can't detect any APs, of course...
I shut it down and remove the SIM card.
No luck, WiFi is still dead.
I have updated the guys in HTC support...
Let's see what they'll come back with.
Here in Andorra, we´ve the same problem After Update. The same problem. Its something about the Country Of the SIM. Here, if you put an Spanish or French SIM, WIFI OK. BUT if you use an Andorran´s SIM: WIFI DEAD...
I have the exact problem.......
I expect it solve in a week or two by HTC otherwise.... No more HTC after the XE
I have the same problem. The problem appeared after upgrading from GB to ICS. When I returned to the RUU - the problem still occurred. In general, helps clear the Dalvik cache - but after a while the problem comes back.

Sorry was travelling and did not see the posts. It was such a major problem not
having wifi while travelling. Lots of the airports had free wifi and i had to keep
pulling out my PC to tether
I am on stock ROM.
Any solutions yet??
Same problem here. Wifi stays stuck on "turning on" and will never turn on. Sometimes it says error. Also, bluetooth exhibits the same symptoms, except it gives up after a while and just goes back to off.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Yeah I have the same problem.

I've tried many different roms, wifi works sometimes. Then it will turn on and off continuously, getting my hopes up then leaving me frustrated. I can't believe I'm considering getting another phone because of this stupid wifi issue.
Do you also have problems with getting notifications when wifi is on? For example whatsapp or gmail?

It's like it will work for a few days perfectly, then this intermittent behavior happens. My EDGE connection kicks in and I get notifications alright but my plan only has 150MB per month. (please don't laugh as I live in China, and don't laugh that my 4G phone is running EDGE). So I need WiFi to work all the time.
same problem i try manny roms but cant get the wifi to work did u guys find any solution?
I found a solution and you're not going to like it, I sold my Sensation and bought a Samsung Galaxy S3. Sorry HTC, byebye to you.

Random reboots

I just got the HTC one S today and already experiencing random reboots....the phone has already done at least 10 today....anybody else experiencing this? And if anybody knows a solution?

It usually happens to me when I'm done using my phone and I lock it or its on stand by, it hasn't happened yet while using it
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using XDA
I would try factory reset then take it back if it keeps doing it . One of the good things about a non removable battery is its suppose to help with random reboots. I've never had one so it might be something wrong with your phone.
Sent from a guy living in a van down by the river
I'd be sending it back. I'm on my second handset due to the chipping MAO issue. My first one must have rebooted about 3 times in the course of 5 days. My current one hasn't done it yet. Sounds like a fault somewhere.

Just had one reboot few mins ago, had the phone for more than two weeks, never experienced this before.
Only difference was I had installed Battery app with shows a number of remaining battery on top left corner on notification bar. Uninstalled it right away. Not sure if this app caused the reboot will report back.

My phone has rebooted several times and it always happens when a program hangs and I try to get out that program. It hasn't been specific to just one program. It's happened to me with Google Play, Play Market, chrome Browser...

My one-s did this a lot from new. Seems to have settled a bit - desperate to find out if it's a hardware issue or not as I need to return it in next day or 2 if so. Seems to be happening to too many people to be hardware unless something is majorly botched!
Is wifi on?
My router was acting up and my phone would reboot every time I tried to connect to it. Factory reset did nothing.
I reset the router and updated the firmware and all is good. It was a Dlink 614+ or something like that.
Yes, wifi on. My router is a 'draytek', a new model and up to date though. My desire running CM had no issues with it.
I have noted however that there appear to be other wifi issues with the oneS. It doesn't always disconnect from wifi even after leaving the building, eating up the power and leaving you with no data connection. I've had to put the wifi widget on the home screen to turn off and back on again to get it functional. It's a pain. Still pondering about returning this.
I have a stock HOS, and Yes I get an RR a few times a week, not 10 per day. This weekend it just went to a power off state for no reason, pressing and holding the button the first time just gave a short green line flash across the middle of the screen and it failed to boot, releasing and holding the power button a second time did boot the phone again.
I also have the same Wifi problems described by others, but worse it can not find my router (2wire 2700hgv) when the SSID is not broadcast and my neighbours SSID is! This is my only HTC or Android device with this problem.
HTC One S in the UK, stock everything, no root
I also encountered regular reboots (approximately hourly) during my first week of use. My theory is that in my case this may be related to the radio issue reported in other threads - that of the connection jumping rapidly between different connection modes.
Since WCDMA coverage in my area is terrible anyway, I switched the radio to "GSM only" under Mobile network settings > Network mode. In addition to fixing the connectivity issues I was experiencing, my device has not reset once in the weeks since.
Not ideal, but since I'm on wifi nearly all of the time, the slower speeds aren't an issue for me. I am hopeful that when HTC roll out a firmware fix for the radio, it may also put an end to the frequent resets I experienced using the "GSM / WCDMA auto" mode.
4 days old and no reboots
rooted--no custom roms yet
i too have the battery % icon and will see if i get any reboots now
any of you guys have the "tampered" in bootloader that shouldn't be there and getting the reboots
I've had two random reboots. The first while using chrome, the other one right after it had booted after the first reboot then I updated to latest firmware, and I haven't had any since that. Maybe that's what the update does ?
Sent from my HTC One S using XDA
I also had random reboots but took it back and got a brand new unit. Its rooted and running custom ROM. So far no reboot issues. Though when my first unit was rebooting it was after an app froze up and I back out of it. From testing other units it appears to be a RAM issue. Sense uses to much memory. Seems the restart occurs after dropping below 165 mb available RAM.

Take your phone back to to T-Mobile and have them replace it. I had the same problem with the one I bought my wife. It also had a problem with WiFi calling and they replaced it on the spot.

I have noticed that if I am streaming music with wifi and go to 4G, it tends to reboot. Either its plugged in to my car stereo and I drive away from work, or I have a set of bluetooth headphones paired with the device. In both cases, beats audio was turned on. But. I am used to random reboots with HTC phones.

I concur. The only time I've experienced any issues with phonus interruptus is when I turn on the Gps while using the Sport Tracker application. For some reason it reboots right after starting.

Just return it. New phones shouldn't do that. Sounds like some apps are looping for resources. Had this phone for 2 days using WiFi and hotspot my lap and Xbox 360 to watch hulu without a hiccup.

Broken WiFi??

This is really weird and I havent had this happen before. I have had this thunderbolt since January (had to send my first one back for repair and got a replacement). My phone is rooted and I have been on various ROM's throughout the months. Recently my WiFi stopped working. When I go to check off the wifi toggle, the icon fades like it is turning wifi on, but nothing happens. When I go into the wifi settings page, it takes a long pause before opening. and you can actually see wifi turn on, then turn off. turn on, then turn off. And I get a pop-up that says unable to scan for networks. Now I have tried this with several roms such as Bamf Soab, Plan 9, MIUI, and a few others with the same result for all. Couldnt be a ROM issue since I used Bamf SOAB with wifi with no problems. Didnt know if there was a folder or something I could delete which would refresh the wifi settings per say. Any ideas? Thanks!
Try installing stock recovery, relocking bootloader, and using An RUU to go to stock Rom. If wifi works there, then unlock bootloader again and reflash toms etc., if WiFi doesn't work when your phone is stock, then its most probably a hardware fault
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
It could very well be a hardware problem. My last Thunderbolt had to be replaced because I was having similar WiFi issues.
