Build Quality/Issues? - Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE

Just wondering what people's experiences are so far with the physicalilty of the device. I really like the way it feels and fits in my hand, with the keyboard open and in landscape mode. Also love the feel of the keyboard, tho i might change a couple things in the key layout.
The one thing i'm seeing is my keys are already getting quite scuffed, perhaps from being pressed with my thumbnails? A few of the printed letters are wearing down and i'm afraid i won't be able to see them after not too much longer! Is anyone else seeing this?
Other than that, the overall build quality is ok, maybe a tad cheap-ish(?), but i like it. In some ways it could be my favorite qwerty phone yet.

Physically the phone is solid. Mentally.. not so much.

Agreed on the mental instability bit.
The things my Photon would do, but not limited to:
1. Notifications go into the ether (don't pop up in notification bar)
2. Apps that go fullscreen will sometimes cause the nav/status bar to black out
3. Vibrate completely at random
4. Take 5 minutes to unlock
5. Regularly see my SD card as "corrupted"
6. Autopunctuation fails at random
And that's all I can remember off the top of my head. It seems to have some real crazy quirks. Hoping CM10 makes it better.

...YES...and now is my 32GB SD definitely dead
For me is this problem only with 32GB cards.16GB works fine.

I forgot to mention, the touchscreen seems a bit wonky to me.... Not very responsive, gotta press a few times sometimes to open an app, and it sorta freaks out sometimes and doesn't swipe from side to side and opens stuff i didn't mean to open. I had a Moto Cliq 2 and had similar touchscreen issues.
I think CM10 would be great on this device, we oughta get cracking on that build. I don't know for sure, but I'd be surprised if we ever got official support from the CM team.

Done.
Now to get it functional...
I still think we should focus on CM9, then worry about getting 10. But that's just me...

Sounds good to me, we do have ICS source, right? How come the source download is only a few MB tho? Did they just release the drivers, and you gotta add them in to the rest of the code?

Moto released the kernel source, they are under no obligation to release userland source.
I have gotten CM9 booting, but not much else. Interloper didn't have the device and was working on CM10... it never booted. I'm hoping he'll make some progress with the device in his hands.

For fun i have built an HTC kernel or two, and the source downloads were always almost 100 MB tho, so i was confused when i looked at our source, haha. I'm not real experienced tho.
From what i hear, getting it to boot is a huge part of it, so that's great. Hopefully we'll get further along soon!

64GB cards do this as well.
I have a fix: Go to a Mac (haven't tested this on PC) and have Disk Utility repair the SD card. Twice for good measure. Usually clears it right up. It's annoying when it happens and I'm nowhere near my computer, though.

They have a 3 month obligation before they violate the GPL for every kernel/software update.

The phone has some issues but so did my evo shift to a certain extent which is why I was re-flashing ROMS all the time. Go to any phone forum and there are always bugs
- I only have the weird touchscreen problems, that someone mentioned above, only when the phone is charging. A little weird. if I overtax the phone i can cause some hangups. I blame Android more than the touchscreen or processor.
- I'm in and out of cell service alot because of the location of my job. I've been blaming that for the fact that notifications come at weird times and out of order. When I'm in service all the time, notifications seem pretty solid.
- The physical keyboard seems to double-type occasionally, but overall I'm ok with its performance. Keyboard slide out mechanism is good, where on my evo shift I thought was a bit too..."loose"?
- I have the wifi drop problem that someone mentioned in another thread. I blame software on that as well. Maybe the next patch will get it right. These companies are just trying to push phones out the door these days. Remember when video games couldn't be updated over internet and how solid they were out the box? Nowadays, everything needs OTA patches at some point. Shame, but I digress.
- camera could be WAY better (auto-focus, poor lighting scenarios). This may be my biggest complaint, because this should be solid out the box given how far phone cameras have come. How long have phones had cameras now? I had a phone camera in 04.
I could give a long list of good physical and software points. Overall I'm really happy. JB would make me happier, but ICS on the Q is pretty darn good.

I have a few scrapes/scratches on my spacebar from sliding the phone open and closed so often, but that's it.
Also, that little oval/dot thing on the left side of the keyboard face of the phone to the left of the number 1, what is that?

Ditto, Had a g2x and traded it (had no issues except for minimal screen bleed. I still have another one but it's at LG for repair rma due to excessive screen bleeding) Really am loving the sensation. The G2X is faster for sure, but we shall see which is faster once we get S-off and root and a vanilla android rom Once I get my G2X back from LG I think I will switch between the 2 for a few days then the g2x will probably become my business line phone. I'm on flex pay and here is the strange thing.. with my g2x it let me forward my VM to google voice, with the sensation it doesnt. I read that flex pay customers are barred from using conditional forwarding so not sure how it worked on my g2x and not on my sensation.. smh

If you happen to get that weird black box on the lock screen, place your finger where the circle would normally be and flick up. It'll unlock the phone without a battery pull (don't know if you saw my topic on that on moco).

I am on my third Sensation and so far this one has been quite good. I have a G2x which I really like as well and also a Vibrant (that I thought I would always keep) and if the Sensation continues to perform flawlessly I will sell my Vibrant. There is just something about the Sensation, I really do not know what it is, but even though the G2x is faster at this point and seems smoother to me, I just keep picking up the Sensation. I hope that s off comes very quickly so we can see what this phone is really like!!!!!!!!!!!
+1
Please include me in the list..
I dont have G2X, BUT I use to have O2X which I think is similar phone, with some dimension different and signal processes only. Anyway, I ditch my O2X due to its poor design body, and its crap software UI..I'm not deny, O2X is faster compare to sensation, but I could not stand it when I hold in my hand and play with its UI...Grrrrrrr!!!!!!
+1 also dont like its bleed display!!
Love sensation!!

Smash welcome to the dark side lol. And to answer your question, no I'm not having any issues loading large sites. I tried engadget (full site), cnn, and a couple others and it loads fine on or off wifi.
I'm going to jump on this thread instead of making a new one... Just returned a family member's G2x for it being the most buggy production phone I have ever seen, shame lg.
Anyway, looking at the sensation as a replacement, anything a huge issue? The g2x had such a software rebooting problem it was absolutely unusable. Just want to make sure software and hardware are working fine for most people...

Droid incredible running CM7.
The messaging app is..... different. I'm also having a hard time getting used to the predictive keyboard. It's pissing me off that delivery notifications are triggering the vibrator. Also can't find a way to turn off the screen powering on once I get a text.
As far as other things I can't get notifications working properly or change led colors. I guess cm7 spoiled me.
The good thing Ian that this screen is AMAZING! Downside though is that different app sucking with its brightness...
Contact management is easy and painless. Facebook seems to work faster then normAl too. The camera is great as well.
However the phone feels way too light then what I'm used to and power button placement is making me rage. Also the volume rocker rocks like it's about to fall off.

Coming from OG Droid and Droid 2 (I say both because the OG just couldn't hold its own anymore, so I had to get the Droid 2 on ebay back in April to hold me until the S3).
Coming from those devices, this thing is amazing. I will probably do a full review video today or tomorrow, but I am not disappointed thus far.

I don't have mine yet, but I'm also coming from an Incredible (god I will miss that phone). I think it will obviously take some getting used to, but ultimately, the side placement is better...
First, given the size of the phone, the button on the side may be much easier to reach when holding the phone with one hand. (I say "may" because, like i said, I don't have mine yet)
Second, sometimes with my Incredible, I'd accidentally hit the power button when putting the phone into my pocket. It seems a power button on the side would prevent that.
Thanks for the impressions, guys.
My phone arrives tomorrow, but I'm out of town, so I will not have it until either Saturday or Monday.
Maybe I can write up a little something after I get it. Honestly though, I'm sure I will immediately ditch the TouchWiz launcher and some of the stock apps in favor of third-party alternatives.
Just for reference, my device history has been:
iPhone 3G -> OG Droid -> Nexus One -> Droid 2 Global
So, I'm coming straight from the D2G (which occasionally gets rotated out with the OG Droid). So I'm used to stock Android for the most part, so we'll see how this goes.

Agreed. I know I don't have mine yet but after having an OG Inc and Rezound the side placed power button is a welcomed change. It's much easier to handle just like it is on the Gnex.

I have them as well, and while I would like them to pack up and leave, I concur with the OP that it is not a deal breaker of any sort.
I can't remember having them on ICS -- would this be a JB thing?
Only happens to me very rarely, only when browsing, once or twice a day at most. Never in games, films, music or documents...
Working on it?-- That implies that they still care about us. They don't. I have almost 50 of these that I support, all have the issue and even after working with Tien and Gary to get a resolution.... they have given me absolutely nothing as far as support goes.
They have suggested cold boots and factory resets... that is all. And NO, those actions fix NOTHING.
Tien... you even abandoned my support call..
Last communication that I had with him was this on 11/7:
Hi Jordan,
Sorry for the late reply, but I just wanted to inform you that we have passed all this information back to HQ so they can test and figure out a solution. I am confident, with all the material we've supplied, that they can duplicate and figure something out. I just want to thank you for sticking through this. Hopefully the new firmware update will address all these issues.

Tien,
I am assuming by now that you or your company has been able to reproduce the graphics issues, reboots and issues that have been happening with the TF700. If you are having trouble with that, there are large groups of users getting these problems, documented here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1811538&page=14
Please let me know what asus plans to do to resolve these issues. Again, these are company machines that are relied on everyday as a primary work space for some. Please email me asap to let me know a time frame that I can expect some sort of resolution.

From time to time, a black horizontal line flashes across the screen, usually in the upper third (at least when I noticed), seems to be random. Looks like a GPU driver issue (maybe NVidia's fault?) because it appeared first with the JB updates.

Yep, correction on my earlier report of none after 23 update, thought I saw one last night, know I saw one this morning, no developers options ticked.
But frequency and duration greatly reduced....still needs more work though.

I'm pretty sure sbdags is applying his magic as we speak. He has a lot to go over, so give it a few days. I do hope the new update remedies it to a large extent, because they are annoying.
The remark of "no developer options ticked" seems to deny me the pleasure of disabling 2D GPU GUI rendering and seeing them leave automagically. I had that idea yesterday evening -- well, I'm going to try anyway. (If it should somehow work out, that'd be a strong lead to suspect a driver issue. Damn you, NVIDIA! )
PS: are we all on CROMI? (Me: v2.7.2) I guess stock ROM is no different to all intents and purposes as far as the black line issue goes. Do any of the people in here that use AOSP/AOKP/CM10 have them too?
My Nexus 7 used to do this as well. I think it's a problem with the Tegra 3 while the wifi is being used. I haven't noticed it on my Nexus 7 since 4.2 though.

Interesting suggestion! I hadn't noticed anuyhthing partiucular in connection with the WiFi being on while the problem occurred. I am curious to see if I can ''fix'' this myself. Anoter workaround for an -- essentially -- hardware issue? (If you are correct, and that carries a rather high probablility, you'd suspect the Tegra3 to be susceptible to some kind of EMF reception and static build-up internally or something,. Ugh, another unsolvable issue to contend with. And still I like this device very much.

4.2.1 for MT4G S?

Hi folks and devs,
I'm just wondering what might be happening w/ the 4.2.1 update on the MT4G S. It's been a while, and I just wanted to ask if there are plans for a release, or if it's not worth it or what. Since the phone's so old, not sure what's on the agenda, but I've got it on my Acer a500 and it's so amazingly fast, it's unbelievable. Would be so great to have it on my phone as well...
Thx.
I'm leaning away from Android as a whole, its all to buggy. Last I seen Bluetooth ffc some keyboard issues ect were in 4.2.1 so its all way to familiar right? Also going into dock mode looked extremely slow to load so all this has made me give up hope in Android. I've been using Android since the G1 and the issues replicate constantly.

I think you're right in some regard tho - I recently messed with my Mom's iPad, and it just feels better put together, more solid (than my a500 at least). I'm waiting for an ebay item of stratosphere II I don't care if it doesn't have any developer support(I can support a device on my own). But right now I'm waiting for my replacement parts to ship right on my doorstep.
Regarding nexus devices I'm still waiting for the next nexus with hw keyboard. ALthough unlikely to happen I'm not losing any hopes

I forced myself to use the virtual keyboard for a while now. I've become so used to it that now I rarely slide out the qwerty. So, if my next phone doesn't have hardware keyboard, I won't have a learning curve.
I'm actually tired of hwkb, as my phone before this was a MotoCliq. Both hwkbs failed, and I don't much care for the novelty of it anymore.

When I got my S3 I hated and still hate the virtual keyboard. I can't let go of the doubleshot because of the hardware keyboard shortcuts and certainty of keystrokes for terminal commands.
I did find a workaround for the virtual keyboard though:
http://celluon.com/products.php
I solved the virtual keyboard problem by getting a real virtual keyboard. It's the most awesome thing since slide keypads.
I can consistently hit around 60 words a minute with solid accuracy, once you start pushing to and past 70 wpm you're getting too fast for the device to interpret your keystrokes.
Quick pairing, should work for the doubleshot on any rom that supports a sixaxis ps3 controller, otherwise the htc "no bluetooth input device for you" mantra prevents it working.
@strapped: JB update is sweet for the S3, I have over 317 apps installed and running - pretty much all paid (ad free) versions, not running into any force closes, slowdowns or random errors. They finally learned how to play nice together as a group.
OS actually sees and displays all apps - unlike on gingerbread where you topped out around 100 or so apps before it started losing track of what you had installed.
You just spent too long with the weight of trying to fix everything HTC broke for us here on your shoulders and are getting burnt out from it. There is light down the tunnel.
The lack of hardware keyboard devices on Android will keep people like us either stuck trying to make it right after launch or despising the candybar style device in our hands everytime the virtual keyboard pops up.
I don't know what you'd go to - maybe ubuntu native when it comes into it's own? You're going to have fewer (if any?) hardware keyboard choices going to anything else. Think it's bad now? The "fractured android ecosystem" is why we have a keyboard at all and not simply iclones.
JB solves everything we don't like about gingerbread. Next flagship/near flagship device with a hardware keyboard will have it and life will be grand.
Hate to see you hang on this long just to give up so close to the savoring the fruits of your frustration.
6 months later and I still hate the S3 despite all it does well. If T-mobile wasn't such a joke for national tower infrastructure, i'd have never got one. Travelling randomly state to state for work and needing map data on the road is not possible. Frequently there isn't a T-mobile tower for a hundred miles or more - so when I hit the tiny mb limit for roaming data, they just cut all data services and leave me in the middle of nowhere with no navigation.
Maps aside, an active smartphone data connection is required for my job. I need to send/receive pdf files, pictures and email consistently over the course of my shift - the first time t-mobile cut me off on data like that almost cost me my job.
Things are starting to go right for android users as a whole with JB - give it a chance to trickle back and fix things here, otherwise a little more patience hopefully brings a JB slider not far off...
I think this thread got a bit off topic, putting it back on topic, is there ever going to be a 4.2.1 based ROM for the doubleshot? As of now, even the HTC legend has one!

Well we are going to need a kernel lol and I'm not sure what edits need to be made to get 4.2.1 booting.
I did have it on my vision before the digitizer stopped working and has dead spots. And its super NICE. But the only visual difference I seen was the status bar. The lockscreen/widgets seemed slow to load and I couldn't get it sped up even at 1.8 Ghz.

I am wondering for the same question. The development of Mytouch 4G Slide is stopped, seemingly. The devices with hardware keyboards became less popular and developers have moved to non-keyboard devices.

Have you seen the development thread lately? I'm guessing you haven't because we have enough to keep users going. HTC bombed the doubleshot and they know it, anything past GB takes heavy lifting to get going right for us, but we try as best we can.
Just because there isn't a new post every 5 minutes does not mean development is dead, it simply means nothing to post about. I have a thread on the shift section that literally gets bumped by users, but it still gets used still gets downloads there are just no issues what so ever to post about.
Why after all we do, do we still have users like you?
I totally understand that its a difficult prossecc, but why is it being such a pain, itsnt it almost exactly the same phone as the Pyramid? Just wiht a smaller screen and a KB? Dont they have almost the exact same specs? so couldnt you use their device tree just modified for the Doubleshot?

Yes pyramid and doubleshot are the same specs. I can't use any device tree or build for anything because my phone is more powerful than my PC. PC only has a 1.6 Ghz Single Core and 1GB RAM.
The only thing my PC can do is kernels, and it struggles with that.
But sounds like your on the right track, if you keep searching I'm sure you could come from the shadows with a build.

Hmmm, maybe, i tamperd a little with building CM9 for the Espresso, never got past the bootanimation though.... Maybe ill try again

Essential to skip official 8.0 in favor of 8.1!

To me this is exciting news, what are your thoughts?

Mmh, little bit disappointed?
End of next week the beta? When will roll out official then? End of February?
That means the touchscreen latency will not be fixed till then.
maybe they do not have any solution for the touch input lag.

Im not even mad. Oreo beta 3 works fine for me only issue is the signal bars going mad ( not actually effecting signal)
Either way it's a good choice 8.1 is a more significant update than 8.0 was.
I'm glad that they are so open about their development. I love this phone I'm in Beta3 rooted with all the Magisk modules I wanted working.
B3 working well for me. No root.
Lately we had all sort of rushed software going out with all sorts of problems. Apple, Intel and so on.
I rather wait for a quality version than have something rushed out of the door because someone in marketing decided it was a good idea or because of impatience.
I'm happy that they're skipping 8.0. PH-1 isn't the only phone that has had issues with 8.0. I'd rather they take their time and get a good stable build, than release some buggy **** that disappoints. I'm also on Beta 3 running AOSiP 8.1. It's pretty great.
From a software build perspective it's not a big deal to go straight to 8.1. Kind of silly not to.

To me it's not exciting news, because as someone else mentioned it means any possible fixes for the touchscreen problems are going to be further delayed. I will be happy to be proven wrong, but the skeptic in me thinks that this is just a delaying tactic because Essential still does not have fixes for the touchscreen ready yet. They know by shifting the release target to 8.1 they are giving themselves a lot more time to get things sorted out, as now I'm sure there are going to be multiple 8.1 beta releases. Their problem was that there were already three 8.0 betas released, and I think everyone was expecting that the 8.0 final would be coming next. But if Essential releases a final Oreo build with the touchscreen issues still present, it's really going to be bad for the company. By switching to 8.1 they have given themselves a few more chances to fix the touchscreen before a non-beta release comes.
Whats wrong with the touch screen? I took off the screen protector I was using it has been night and day. Feels more responsive with one not installed

I think is not about magnifying the issue.
The touchscreen issue is quite obvious when one try to tap the screen with the phone on a flat surface.

yeah I agree, and I don't even like this phone. But the jitter thing was a bit overblown.
Um yeah, my comment has nothing to do about scrolling. It has to do with the fact that, several times a day, my phone's touchscreen becomes wildly unresponsive and does not register most touches. I then have to lock the phone and unlock it again to be able to type properly. This is a well-documented issue with this phone unless you've been living under a rock (or don't look at reddit, which has much more active of a community than XDA for this device).
There will be monthly security released for 8.0 and 8.1 betas until an official goes out.

I am not sure what the jitter thing is, but I am hoping that we get official Oreo soon and fix the bugs that are there...
Only issue that bothers me is the crazy ghost touches registering every blue moon. A reboot fixes it, but it happens here and there still.

Yes, this ^
I've been having this issue since day one. I've tried factory resets to no avail. It happens with stock launcher 3 and nova prime. I'm not rooted and now running ob3. The problem has persisted and I'm quite disappointed. I'm ready to pack it in and go to another device. I hate giving up on something but I believe that this phone was a mistake for me to purchase. It's a real shame because there is a lot of potential here and who doesn't love the simplicity and weightlessness of stock Android. Just my 2¢
