Is this tablet really this slow and buggy? Worth rooting?

I just bought this device as a toy and a test as a computer tablet. I found it to be slow and buggy. I do notice that in browsing heavy pages like the real facebook page it IS faster than my Galaxy Note 1 but in almost everything else, the Note is faster and snappier. I have disabled lots of apps, resett it, no change. So my question, I guess this one is really worth rooting and installing a good rom Im used to the Cyanogen to my phones, is Cyanogen working good for this tablet?
Im still marveled by the quality of the screen, I dont think I ever have seen such a good screen! If I just now could get it working somewhat near as good as my Note 1 I will be a happy panda

My experience is that it is NOT slow and buggy.
I could compare it with an iPad3 last week and I think they are very close.
You can't compare it with a note because due to the much higher resolution the gpu has to do so much more computing. That is why the nexus7 is faster than the tf700 due to it's smaller screen AND resolution

I'm on stock rom with browser2ram and force2gpu enabled. My table is very fast. Just remember before you flash a new rom, just do factory reset(data wipe 3 times). Also root is good (allow you to install rooted app like Titinium backup, SetcPU etc..), but don't unlock unless absolutely necessary (void your warranty), or you have time or like to play with custom rom.

Ok, sounds like I will root it then and try to tweak it, Im not satisfied with the speed with it sofar. Its seems stable now after I resetted it, before the reset, it crasched 2-10 times a day. My idea was that since the GPU and CPU is older in the Note, The Tegra 3 would be able to handle the FullHD resolution but it doesnt seem to .. I definatly want a ROM without the garbage crap

Yes, all games, videos, pictures, and documents and apps are function normally. There are 3 most popular office apps:
1. Documents to go (this can view google docs also. Paid version only)
2. Kingsoft office
3. Polaris office (currently polaris has a bug with fonts).
My stock browser can view google docs fine. I think stock browser is the best in my opinion (have tried boat, chrome, mozilla etc...)

The Infinity's performance is not CPU bound and is not due to the higher res. It's I/O limited. The CPU is plenty fast enough. As soon as the memory config requires the system to start hitting the /sdcard memory, the system will be subject to random stuttering/pausing because the sdcard memory is the cheapest, slowest, crappiest flash RAM ASUS could find.
This is why stuff like browser2ram is seen as a huge boost for people that do a lot of browsing and it is also why the stuttering varies from user to user/session to session since the RAM situation in the system varies from config to config and moment to moment during use. Some users who's config has a lot of free DRAM and do not frequently use stuff that hits the sdcard partition hard, see almost no performance issues with the tablet.

I guess I'm going to do the downgrade to ICS .30\root\then try the rootkreeper deal back to Belly Jean.
I really don't want to go thru all this, but if I want to keep chipping away trying to find a better Android experience then so be it.
Pain in the ass...

Thanx for the info! That was my biggest thoughts about the Infinity, "is the RAM enough?" and it isnt but then Ill just have to multitask less and try to tweak it. And perhaps dont install multipicture wallpaper.. but thats one of the things that I love about my Note

Hmmm, I've found mine to be quick and virtually bug-free, but then again I didn't buy it as a toy.

A little tweaking and I wouldn't call it slow. Even stock its a solid piece of equipment.
Apply data2sd mod built for CleanROM 2 after installing the ROM. You'll need a fast sd card.
Research the threads. The blob for data2sd for that ROM was just posted today.

I own both the Infinity and the Acer a700 and after the a700 got JB earlier today, I will say that the Infinity lags more than the a700 (and I was very happy with the Infinity). Colour me shocked.

The only time I really ever experience any lag or sluggishness is when browsing. I will be rooting once there is a method discovered for Jelly Bean on the Infinity. I'd really like to give browser2ram a shot. I've heard it does wonders for browsing.

Before i say thing, I will list the important things about my tablet - C7 model, Has been repaired for speaker issues & Jelly bean 4.1.1. I'd say TF700T is a powerful device, It lacks the software for it. I use to notice quiet a bit of lag on ICS but after upgraded to Jelly bean, It's faster than ever! I would even compare it to iPad 3:laugh: I'm running Stock Jelly bean with a bit of removing apps here and there.
I Don't know why everyone is having problems with such a decent device.

I you guys would read the Development section (read the newer threads, please) you would see that CleanROM2.2 has pretty much completely eliminated the lag and i/o issues. It's reason enough to root and unlock. This tablet is a beast when it is allowed to begin to reach its full potential.

Im rooted and installed CleanRom2.2 this morning and it is indeed faster and smoother i will try the tweaking you guys suggested later. It still lagged when i downloaded my spotify playlists while i was downloading youtube movies tho

I think CleanROM 2.2 is the route I'm going to go too...that's if I can figure out how to do it without asking a bunch of dumbs**t questions.

I'm getting more and more disappointed with this TF700T each time I turn it on lately...

If it was really laggy and something that i can't deal with i would unlock but since it feels flawless, I might stay. I don't give a crap about their warranty but i do care for my device (brick)

It's the total opposite for me. ICS was fast and virtually lag-free. The latest updates to Jellybean my Infinity lags like nobody's business. Very disappointing. Looks like root'n'rom time.

[Q] Why are my quadrant scores low?

Okay so, my tf700 is running CleanRom 2.5.5 Inheritance with the over clocked kernal
and i keep getting scores around 6000 and under
while in performance mode
am i doing something wrong

i enabled it and disabled it
score went up to 6200
now dropped back to 5600

No idea. Have you tried taking a TBU and (maybe even clean) install 2.6 and 2.6.1 (patch over 2.6)?
PS: what mods did you choose? And how much did you manage to get when in Performance Mode?

Low score... it used to be pretty damn high for the TF700T... times change, I guess

Where do you want to be with benchmarks?
Are you wanting high numbers or are you good with smooth stable UE?

its well documented, quadrant can be fooled, you can have a custom rom thats built specifically for quadrant and it will bench much higher than other roms but in real use its much slower. Go for smooth and stable. Basically, just use your tablet and if you like where its at dont complain, quadrant is just a number, theres no FEELING behind it. Higher number does not always mean better experience.

6200 with force GPU rendering on is great! How does it feel to use?

I was thinking if i wipe it completely and do a clean install it would be better, sounds like a good idea anyway
i was comparing my scores to what everyone else was saying and what it showed in the thread for that rom
i always ran quadrant in performance mode and made sure i had more than 400mb free of ram
i stayed with some default setting on the DPI and launcher, but i chose clemsyns kernal with the GPU at 700
and i left fsync enabled
Some people said it hit 7000
if it doesn't matter i wont worry about it
but i will say my tablet is much quicker then before, i have a few hiccups that i believe are caused by some apps
is it possible that apps in the background can cause the low scores?

Had my tf since november - the business on it as soon as it was out of the box. But no matter what image ive loaded onto it its always been slow ( i think ive tried them all) ie my nexus4 runs greasy smooth compared to my tf, almost to the point that a guy at work gave me a 300 to unlock and his seemed a lot better/smoother/faster than mine....is it just mine or is it the norm
currently im on cyanogen 10.1 latest nightly with the bryce overclocked kernel running at 1.9gb if i was a betting man i would say the nova launcher was running about 10fps with all the special effects off...as a guide...
ps especially the browser - no matter which one it always takes ages to load pages....

I must admit I struggle with your story language-wise, but I think I do get your general statement. CROMI, for example, should run smoothly, no matter what, UNLESS your device is faulty.
I'd recommend wiping EVERYTHING -- so you do not run into remnants form earlier ROMs/installations -- and starting anew with CROMI, just to be sure. Update your bootloader (to the JB version), and then try data2SD if it is still not to your liking.

And to add to Marty's efforts what ever you do if flashisg from a custom recovery with JB 4.1 or later do not use an older version of any recovery!

Hi - which rom is that...?
I must say im kind of trying that right now....complete wipe, factory reset and then a factory reset from the recovery screen....its auto loading the apps at the moment....thanks for the reply all the same....ive never tried that bit of software that goes on the memory card...is there a walkthrough somewhere?

You can flash the latest bootloader form page 2 of the CleanRom Inheritance thread And CROMI from page 1

As far as I know stock TF700 related ROMs are laggy and require a custom Over clocked kernel such as Clemsyn which is rubbish and even with this performance is sluggish. But her is a way to get rid of the lag once and for all. Unlock and root the TF700. Then install Cyanogenmod 10.1 latest build and then when you boot into it set the IO as CFQ permenantly and then use Seeder with the settings on aggressive and the IO extend option unticked but all the rest of the options ticked. Also use lightning browser or Browser2RAM which enhances the stock Android browsers performance.
After that enjoy a super fast transformer like never before. Don't use any other rom . My transformer got nearly 150000 on Antutu which is really good and I got nearly 5500 on Quadrant with it on performance mode (I didn't use the custom CM10.1 customs kernel or any other one just the stock CM10.1 kernel). My transformer in balanced seems to be on par with an iPad 2, 3 and better than a normal Asus transformer Prime or TF300 and I have over 40 applications with several games with 1+GB data. The IO problem is still there as it is hardware based although with this their is nearly no lag for the first time. Beautiful TF700 CyanogenMod developers. I read the commit log and checked the code many gerrit optimisations for the IO and Armv7 cores. Enjoy!!!!! Wohoo Project Butter!!!!!

Well not to brag but flash CROMI which is based on stock and you can achieve 17000 on antutu and over 7000 on quadrant. So much for stock ROMs being laggy eh?
Now with no overclocking you are looking at 5500 - 6000 on quadrant so would seem to be on par with CM based ROMs. I do like CM but you lose some functionality whilst gaining others and you have to suffer some stability issues especially if doing nightlies. Also they never seem to finish them.....

Surfing with Chrome on this tablet is really laggy, anyone else experiencing this?

It's no where near as snappy as surfing with Chrome on my Nexus 7.
I'm running Cromi-X with:
fsync disabled
that Chrome speed up mod option when you first install Cromi-X
I see posts on here where people's TF700's run smooth. What other things are you doing to your tablet?

Chrome has always ran slow on my tablet. B2R takes away the lag mostly but it is still slow. I prefer Dolphin, Boat, and stock.

Yeah its awful on the TF. No idea why.
Stock is perfect. Pages load quick. sbdags did an excellent job with it

Did you guys play with about:flags? Type that into the url in chrome and check it out. Its Labs ^2.
Ps-I'm the guy that wrote the B2R script for CROMIX and I run chrome beta. I can be made to run pretty fast, but not as fast as stock unfortunately but I prefer it.

I use to use Chrome on my phone and everything, but after a while was like na I'll try the stock one out. Haven't looked back since. Its quick and solid on Cromi-X

Try Firefox beta. Its running very smooth

Chrome has gotten progressively worse in my experience, despite tons of small updates with "performance improvements". Recently it was all but unusable. I installed the latest firmware update and it seems to be better, so perhaps the problem is the stock ROM rather than the app.
I agree that stock browser is quite good. I particularly like the gesture mode (swipe from side and you get a speed dial for the different functions). However, I disagree that its page loading times are up to snuff. The browser's much slower than Chrome (after Chrome recovers from being unresponsive for a while when entering URLs). I think some of the issue may even be only apparent, since Chrome starts rendering pages immediately while stock browser waits until the loading bar is some 3/4 of the way, but still the (subjective) impression I get is that Chrome renders much faster.

If you google android browser tests there are quite a few fairly comprehensive ones.
Most of those note that Chrome for some reason just doesn't run well.
Quite ironic considering it's my desktop browser of choice due to it's speed

I enabled "Override software rendering list" and Chrome seems to be a little bit snappier. I will play with more of the about:flags settings and see if any of them really help!
Edit: I also enabled "Accelerated overflow scroll".

TF700 stock not-rooted here, and chrome suck's, very laggy to change from tabs it looks like it re-render / refresh the page, and it usually get "stuck" and have to be closed, I still use it because I use it on my work notebook, personal notebook, Galaxy S2, and well, I really enjoy my favorites everywhere, but I have been using very little.
Does anyone got any improves just changing parameters on about:flags? We could do a sticky post with all the information about it, and the results of the tests.
I will give a shot when I get home, any improvements I will post here, even though I think I will change the ROM first, this stock is killing me.

Obviously it's your choice but IMO just how frustrated i got with stock and Chrome browsers on the stock ASUS firmware was rendering the tablet unusable. It was so frustrating, especially in lectures where a friend on his iPad could look through about 5 tabs before mine had loaded a page and let me type an URL.
Since CROMI-X the stock browser runs incredibly well. (AS IN IT ACTUALLY WORKS LIKE ON MOST OTHER TABLETS) :laugh:

Yeah, I know about your frustration.
I just got to the forum (to actually post something), even though I have a galaxy S2 with ressurection remix for quite a long time, just now I'm having time to look for ROM's for the TF700.
I already got notes and will research about CROMI-X and will look for some more ROM's, do you know any other? I know that changing the kernel can directly affect the performance and battery on the ROM, I guess will have to research a lot.

B2R is best - I was using dolphin - not anymore!

Let's face it chrome sucks, even with b2r. I don't know what Google are doing. The stock browser combined with b2r is unbeatable IMO.

FYI - Not yet released, but I will add Firefox beta and Dolphin beta to the next final release of the MB2R script. There is some cleanup I need to do as well.

You may need to fine tune your network speed and buffersize for a better loading and downloading. For example, hsxpa, dns, wifi read and write buffer, ipv4.tcp_mem, ipv4.udp_rmem, ipv4_udp_rmem, core.wmem_max and rmem_max=2M, tcp_congestion_control=cubic, and change your minfree a little more aggressive especially the last two numbers.

Hey all -
I have been a Transformer (and modding) fan since my TF101, and I just leapt from a TF201 to the infinity.
I'm not sure quite what I was expecting, but I surely wasn't expecting it to be slower. Responses to screen taps and swipes are very delayed, to the point where it's extremely annoying.
This is all subjective, I realize, but I was wondering if this is a widespread thing or if I should try to RMA it.
I had heard that CROMi-X was the rom to have, so I flashed 4.6.7.
I had also heard that the GPU was an ass-kicker, so I put on my favorite piece of eye-candy (that I've purchased) which is "Asphalt 7: Heat." - and it ran DOG SLOW, and wasn't particularly candy-ish.
Well, maybe that's an exaggeration, but having the 201 and 700 side-by-side (literally, driving one with each hand, and poorly at that) the 700 was choppy and would pause every so often. It took MUCH longer to load, too.
So I was unhappy.
I read about the slow internal I/O and re-flashed with a Data2SD option, formatted the microcard, the whole nine yards, and it didn't really get any better. fsync is turned OFF.
I side-graded to the older CleanROM Inheritance 3.4.7, and it actually seems SLIGHTLY better, but the UI has a tendency to be very laggy.
I'm going to try "AndroWook" next, I had that on my Prime with good success.
I've googled and found plenty, plenty plenty of people who have a problem with the TF700 and its speed, which is really disappointing because it's supposed to be the top of the line.
So.. is anyone out there really HAPPY with their TF700? Is it zippy and satisfying? What ROM are you using?
Maybe I'll try to unload it on craigslist and go back to the TF201. It has lower "Androbench" marks, but is crazy more responsive.

I'm still using 4.1.1. I run Cromi 3.4.6 with Hund's kernel 2.2, along with most of the tweaks found here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2232715). I am not running data2sd and my CPU/GPU profiles are not as aggressive. Apparently some people have been getting bootloops after applying these tweaks but I've never had it.
I've tried 4.2 several times (with different versions of Cromi-X) but usually come back to 4.1.1 within a day because it seems to run better.
Having said this, I think "lags" can be quite subjective - I personally think my tf700 is zippy but perhaps you wouldn't agree.

It is odd. With what you said, your TF700 should be very smooth unless there is a hardware problem Did you try a clean install? BTW, if you reinstall again, I would recommend that you should use Cromi X V4.6.5 instead of 4.6.7.
For some reason when I used the Advanced Wipe and wiped everything in TWRP. I still found some old files on my internal SD. However, when I used a formatted option, everything was gone and clean. Maybe you should do that. Also if you use Data2Ram, you should reformat your MicroSD as the same time with your clean install. A combination of Fsync Off, D2R, and Cromi X should work very well. My kernel is Hund's V3.0.6 with OC of 1.4G CPU, 520M GPU for Power Saving, 1.6G CPU, 600M GPU for Normal, and 1.8G CPU, 650M GPU for my Performance with UV about 35mV. My quandrant scores are 5800 for Power Saving = Game Mode, 6400 for Normal = Normal Activities, and 7000s for Performance = Browsing and streaming movies. Please report back if you decide to do a clean install, thanks and good lucks.

Here are my settings and quadrant scores using Hund 2.2:
Power Saving - GPU 650Mhz, CPU 1.45/1.4Ghz - Quadrant 5331
Balanced - GPU 700Mhz, CPU 1.65/1.6Ghz - Quadrant 6336
Performance - GPu 775Mhz, CPU 1.85/1.8 Ghz - Quadrant 7005
Personally I take the quadrant scores with a grain of salt because I've had setups where the scores were better but the tablet was not as responsive. I mostly run on Power Saving mode without any problems.

Several totally clean installs at this point.
AndroWook was bust, it didn't even get past the "ASUS" logo.
I'm back to Cromi 3.4.7 with _that's kernel 3.1.10. A lot of folks are mentioning Hund 2.2, perhaps I'll try overlaying that now.

I totally agree. I added a bunch of the PimpMyRom tweaks and rebooted. I'm letting it settle down and then going to see what's what.
I can't get the GPU overclock to take, though. I think I've mounted the FS r/w and I'm editing the GPU cap files to contain 1460 as directed, but the next time I open the file it's back to 1300. Weird.
So, my Quadrant score after all the tweaks were put in, on "Balanced," is 5266. On "Performance," it's 5139.

Strange. I get 5200 in balanced mode without any special tweaks, and over 6000 in performance mode with fsync off.
The general user experience is acceptable, but not exceptionally smooth - lost frames in animations are common, but there are no long waiting times anywhere.

That is really odd. Unfortunately my knowledge of tweaking is entirely based on following other people's instructions so I don't know why the GPU changes are not taking. Are your CPU changes taking? Did you follow the instructions on init.d scripts/enabling his voltage table and governor tweaks?
Here's are my cpu.sh files. I switched the profile for powering saving mode and balanced mode because the tablet always defaults to balanced mode.

Also, when I made the profile too aggressive (too high on CPU or GPU), the tablet got way hot and my quadrant score dropped. Since our tablets are all different on the amount of overclocking they can handle, maybe you're pushing your tablet too much. Have you tried easing down on overclocking?

LOL I totally agreed with on that. :laugh: However, I still think that it is better with some numbers as references others than words lags, smooth, choppy, slow, fast, and so on. :good: It is just my way of explanations.

This might be my final entry - after doing the PMR tweaks, and flashing Hund 2.2 (no offense, _that ) the Quadrant score in Performance mode is ... uh.. well, indeterminate because suddenly I can't attach to our wifi. Sigh. Perhaps I overtweaked.
Although, Asphalt ran VERY smoothly. I credit the GPU overclock, in combination with assigning all the 2D stuff to the GPU.

You probably have problems because of PMR tweaks I remember I also had wifi issues after PMR and I think I didn't enable all the tweaks in the guide. Try PMR recovery where it restores all your previous settings-it should restore your wifi. If not, then maybe a clean install of Cromi and then doing the init.d/Hund/CPU/GPU tweaks should give you quite a bit of performance boost.
Hope by "final entry" you don't mean you're giving up!

Yeah, it seems as if the "Fast DNS" internet tweak means it has somehow thrown off DHCP.
I'm connected to the wifi AP, but I get no IP address, etc.
I guess I'll flash the recovery thing. Darn, everything but that was working great
No, I had meant to say 'final entry' insofar as I was finally happy with it - but while i was typing it, I wanted to put in the Quadrant score, and then I realize I couldn't connect to the website, and then I realized I had no IP, and here we are.

Recovery image went south too, and I had to re-flash that via adb.
There is truly some weird stuff happening here.
Anyway, the quadrant score - now on "Performance" because I swapped cpu2 and cpu3, what a great idea - is...

It was pretty warm, yeah. I knocked the cpu back from 1900mhz to 1800mhz - which doesn't seem to matter since according to the little floating CPU monitor I have ("Cool Tool") it's never going over 1600mhz anyway.
I mean, I've got PMR trying to control stuff on one hand, the built-in "Power Saving/Balanced/performance" thing on the other, and also "Trickster Mod"

It does seem perkier after all this, so maybe it doesn't matter.
I wish Quadrant would let me see my score without hitting the internet though. I backed off the voltages by 0.025v per speed, and came up with 5499 this time. Although I don't know whether that's "performance" or what.

Did you use Hundsbuah's app to set whatever parameters need to be set?
Sorry for not being more specific, I have no experience with it, I just know Hundsbuah didn't only add awesome overclocking features into his kernel, but he also wrote an app to control it.

Is Asphalt still running better than before? I think the most important thing is that the applications you use are running smoothly and not upsetting you that (1) you spent $$$ on the tablet, (2) you spent a lot of time tweaking the tablet, and (3) you're not getting the performance you want.
I once spent a few hours tweaking CPU/GPU to figure out how I can maximize Quadrant score and what I came away from it is that high score doesn't matter if the tablet is getting way to hot for comfort and that low score doesn't matter if the tablet is running to my satisfaction. I almost never change my power setting and that means my score is probably around 5300, but I still like how the tablet responds.
Anyways, hope your tablet's running better than before and good luck with any additional tweaking! :victory:
