ive been posting this bug ive found all over but no one seems to have any ideas on how to fix it as it doesn't appear to effect many users. the issue is on any aosp based rom: cm10, aokp, slimbean, liquid..etc i get wifi errors such as wps failed and my router is out of range. this happens until i toggle off wifi and turn it back on. i always do fresh, clean install with full wipes before i flash the rom & gapps. ive tried everything including all different kernels to no avail. i know my router is ok because once i go back to any ics rom or jellywiz the wifi works fine. to me this sounds like a aosp kernel or wifi driver issue. how can i get this reported or looked into? as of now i know this effects myself and one other user ive talked to and he is stumped as well. i have a netgear wireless g router in case anybody wondered, current firmware as well. the devs ive reported this too seem to be ignoring my posts.
i seriously want to use one of the aosp roms but i cannot right now and it's driving me mad. any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.
ill also add i tried changing to different security settings on my router to no avail.
What router does this other user use? The one you said has the same issues. Similar to yours?
I don't use my phone on wifi very often so I dunno, but if he has one similar to yours I would say there's a problem with that router liking AOSP ROMs.
Its a netgear wireless g. He said he has a wireless n. If its the router, why does every ics rom work? Never heard of a router disliking aosp lol. Im wondering if the problem is using the newest clockworkmod touch recovery? Im just trying to troubleshoot. Ive tried everything else tbh. Never had a phone puke when trying aosp and i mean any aosp rom.
Doesnt anyone else use netgear routers?

Someone fixed wifi with DNS server change. Don't know if it was same problem.
Speaking of dns i do use opendns on my pc. Just darn weird ics doesnt act up for me.
ICS has code made directly for our device/radios because that's what comes on our phones. Jelly bean, which all AOSP ROMs are based from, doesn't have any code made directly for ours. All the developers have ported it over to our devices and it will be imperfect until Verizon jelly bean comes out/gets leaked.

Yeah thats what i figured. Just sucks i cannot use aosp in the meantime. Shocked more people are not having the same issue.
Got rid of opendns on my router and still a no go. Any other ideas guys? I feel left out not being able to use aosp. Gonna suck if i have to wait until the jb ota comes.
found a fix for anyone having issues with the wifi saying out of range or wps failed. go into your router settings and change your ssid name and password, restart your router and connect on your phone. worked great for me. don't now why this would happen on aosp roms but im glad i got it solved.

The best thing you can do is keep this in mind and help the next guys that posts about WiFi issues like yours. That would be huge if you did that.

I've seen a lot of people say that simply rebooting their router fixed wifi issues on their phone. Are you sure the reboot alone wasnt responsible for fixing the issue?
well the issue is back with a vengeance, nothing seems to work for me now.

I've been a lurker for a while and created this account just to let you know I have the same issues but with a d2spr (sprint gs3). Only aosp roms and I've been through both slim bean and liquidsmooth rc9. It's definitely the phone, not the routers. With my phone, it only happens when I reboot for any reason. If I rebooted with wifi on, my toggles will still indicate that wifi is still on after the boot, but it will not receive any signal. Any networks that do show up in available networks state "out of range". Even if you were just connected to that network before the reboot and you are still in range it will state "out of range". Not until you toggle the wifi off, then back on, everything seems to correct itself until next boot. It has to be the wifi toggle in settings though and not the one on any widgets or any added to the notification tray. Weird. Any solutions on your end yet? Looks like it's been a few days without any updates.
I had this is issue and setting a static ip on my phone fixed it, it was a dhcp issue.

Alright I've had my Inspire quite a while now and have been using CyanogenMod RC's mainly sense I rooted my phone. One feature I lost initial was my Wireless-N but I chalked it up to the rom being in development (started at RC 6). I forgot about the loss until a few days ago when i got my brand new router.
Now I can access Wireless B,G but my phone can not see N. I've tried multiple Roms, Radios and RILs without any affect. I've basically run out of ideas on what to try to fix this. Anyone have any suggestions on could causing this?

i dont think you will actually see the letter? you will just receive the speed if you have it available. you will see the name you gave your wireless etc. and connect to it. i am not quite sure what you mean your phone can not access N
I use dd-wrt on the router so it broad a different SSIDs for each radio in it. I have "test-G" and "test-N" broadcasting form the router. I can see "test-G" broadcasting from my phone but not "test-N". Now I can see "test-N" from all my other devices in my house.
I miss spoke on my last post. I hadn't tested Wireless-A yet form my router till now. Seem My phone can see the 5-GHz range.

This is a known issue with Android. Supposed to be fixed in 3.0
i also use dd-wrt my router is also N. i can see it just fine. what kind of router is it?
Anyone else running into issues using wifi with alpha7.1? For some reason i can see networks but I am unable to connect to them.
Well I fixed it. Just reinstalled and made sure I cleared out everything.

Ok it seems that i'm only having issues connected to my home network.
I've tried pretty much everything.
I've tried connected to it with no password no encryption and it still won't connect.
IT does connect to other networks so I'm wondering if it might be a setting that i might have to change.
Can anyone shed any light on this subject?
Even with the newer builds (currently running the latest nightly) I am still unable to connect to my home wifi network.
Currently I am using the Clear Hub Express
http://www.clear.com/support/download/modem/clear-hub-express
I don't know why cm9 won't connect. The stock rom does.
I am able to connect to every other wifi network i come across (work, friends houses).
Anyone got any bright ideas as to whats going on?
Im actually having the same problem. The only thing i can think is it is something to do with the Clear network. I too have a Clear modem, and with CM9/ AOKP Romson the One S I cant connect to my home WIFI. Can connect to others just fine. Glad to see some else has the problem and im not crazy. But i definitely think it has something to do with Clear being as we both are having the identically same problem. Let me know if you come up with anything.
Oh and do you have this problem on Sense 4.0 ROMS? I do not. Which makes it even weirder!
Nope the sense romantic work fine. I'm gonna hook up an old wireless router I have and see if it works

I have a feeling it will work. I was gonna do the same. Let me know how you fare.
First of all I would like to say I appreciate all the work that the XDA forums has been doing, and I am pleased to see that the community is as strong, if not, stronger since the last time that I have been here a couple years ago. The questions, answers, feedback and help, let alone for the Samsung Galaxy S 4G released by T-Mobile in February of 2011, is amazing. These forums have really helped people make the most out of their device, and had it not exist, this Galaxy S in my hand would have been long forgotten by Samsung, and the Gingerbread stock ROM that I was given with would be my home. It reminded me of how much I had missed messing with these android devices; nothing like jailbreaking and installing cydia on my iPhone. The experience is not the same. Anyways...
Pulling out my T959V from its box I decided it was time to finally install ICS on it after Samsung have let these great device fade away.
I installed ICS last night and stayed up searching for kernels and testing out different ROMS some slow and many faster than others and decided that Cyanogen 9 was the best looking and performance-wise ROM on the phone in my opinion. Considering that all other ROMS base it on the nightly builds extra stuff was just junk, considering this phone only has one processor. So I upgraded from Gingerbread 2.3.6 and I've tried many different kernels and everything works except WiFi. It can not even search for one network no matter how many times I press "Scan". I'd appreciate all the help I can get.
Thanks
Try rebooting into recovery and running fix permissions. Usually fixes wifi right up.

I'd check the MD5 of the CM9 DL and make sure it's a match. I haven't heard of anyone else having that issue. Also make sure you DL the latest CM9. If the MD5 matches format system, wipe cache/dalvik and flash again. Reboot an let it sit for five minutes then try wifi.

Yeah I've checked the MD5 sums of the zip packages after download. This is so bizarre, and the CM9 is not the only ROM I've tried. I've tried about 4 or 5 of them and different kernels as well and all of them do not connect to WiFi. I have formatted system, and always wiped any trace of the prior ROM before installing. Plus, I have tried the method where I would boot to recovery and "fix permissions". No good.
I would use a heimdall one click go back to stock kj6 then flash up to cm9. Sounds like you have some bugs that will only get squashed by going back to stock. IMO I would flash bootloaders too. Just so it overwrites EVERYTHING.

I just used the Stock KJ6 + Root with the Blastoff v2 kernel integrated, flashed, flashed again and installed boot-loaders as well. Phone restarted, went to WiFi, checked it, and it says "Error". Now I'm going to flash it to true stock using Odin rather than the .jar executable no luck so far and I don't know whats going on.

Sounding more and more like a hardware issue. Wifi and bluetooth are on the same chip so if your still on stock try and turn on BT. If it turns on it might not be the chip. If it gives the same error I'd bet money on a bad chip.
This would be a good time for logcat and dmesg...

Bluetooth works fine, WiFi just wont turn on. Its not a hardware issue, and WiFi was working the same day before I flashed to ICS
Done use stock + blastoff that is a stepping stone one click for people to go back to stock then either flash another gb rom or ics rom. Wifi is broken because of the new wifi module used. I never meant for it to be used as a daily driver. Use the heimdall one click bhundven has posted in his one click thread.
@mkho30
I had the same exact Wi-Fi issue a few months ago. I tried everything you tried and what members are suggesting in this thread.
I also asked about this issue on irc (Team Acid) and was told by Bryan that ICS (if I remember correctly) doesn't support WPS button connection. I assumed it was "on my end" and not ROM related.
Bryan suggested that I reboot my router. I had done that several times before asking. I didn't even know you could log in to your router to reconfigure it so he suggested that I Google to learn.
Long story short. I googled and read allot. I reconfigured my router many different ways. I disabled my WPS button connection and reset my router many times. I changed the security every way possible. I even set up a guest network.. the ONLY way I was able to connect to my Wi-Fi network was if I disabled the security COMPLETELY.
That wasn't an option for me. I live in an apartment building and I have seen people in the halls with laptops using their neighbors Wi-Fi.
I tried everything for a couple of months and finally went back to Gingerbread last weekend.
Sorry I can't be of any help with this reply. I just wanted to share my experience and let you know that you aren't the only one that has this issue...man I miss ICS. I didn't have an issue with the battery after "I settled in" Hopefully we can find out what is going on with us.
Btw. I'm back on Gingerbread and I connect to Wi-Fi with no problems.

I tried that several times FB. During my searching I came across a thread (one of those answers sites) that gave your answer as a fix.
I REALLY did my do diligence in trying to get connected. I hadn't seen anyone else with this problem until today so I spent hours trying WPA2 and other configurations. I thought WPA2 would fix it for sure because that was what I had read so I kept trying it. It never worked for me. The only thing that did was having no encryption at all..I started to think that it was a "Black Ice Voodoo thing" lol. Remember how some users, no matter what they did, could never flash Black Ice Voodoo?
Btw the error I always got was an Authentication error.
Thanks for replying
If you're up for it and your router is supported, try OpenWRT. It really sounds like a router issue.

Sorry. I don't use a pc at work. I have to sneak on xda using my phone and they don't like seeing is on our phones for to long.
I forgot to mention in my reply to the OP that I DIDN'T have a problem scanning for Wi-Fi access. I could do that. I just couldn't connect without getting an Authentication Error. My phone would scan, connect, then discontent and give me the error.
I've had the exact same authentication error, scans, asks for password, tries to connect, then errors out, usually always after flashing CM9 and either a reinstall (recopying to my SDcard too) or a fix permissions have fixed it.
ALSO, this is very important. FORGET the connections in your wifi list after doing the fix permissions. IT WILL NOT connect to a saved connection. Reboot to recovery, fix permissions (don't use a tool within android), goto wifi, click on the connection and choose forget, then choose the connection again and try that.

I will try this. I have done much of what you have stated here maybe even all of it before. But not in the order you describe.. I'd really like to go back to ICS. I had 4G on it (home) where I used to get 3G on Gingerbread. Also at home I needed Wi-Fi calling on Gingerbread but on ICS I had great reception.
@jeff. I just googled OpenWRT and I should have before I said I'll try it when I get home lol. OpenWRT might be to much for me right now.
Thank you for all your help people. I'll update you as soon as I can. I must go sailing now. It's Red Flag!
I just purchased a used HTC One X from the Rogers network and unlocked it. Before rooting it, on the Sense rom WiFi was working great. Very strong signal and it never dropped. Upon flashing CM10, it's not picking up my home network (which I know is working because I'm typing on it right now and the device was connecting to it earlier).
I downloaded WiFi analyzer and it's jumping between networks, some networks pop up and then disappear and then new ones pop up. WiFi is just acting very strange. I did all the appropriate wipes before flashing.
I found a lot of WiFi issues surrounding the international One X but I don't think this is a defect since it was working fine with Sense.
Does anyone else have any experience with this?
Thanks!
Just flashed back to a Sense rom, and low and behold my WiFi is working properly again.
I've had the same experience with CM10 (different nightlies) and AOKP, WiFi is just not reliable. I can connect just fine and the signal strength is the same as with Sense (including CleanROM) but at random times transfer speeds will go down or just drop completely, usually turning WiFi off and on fixes it but it happens again within a couple of hours.
I've tried a couple of tips from those threads like turning off the 5GHhz radio on my router but that doesn't seem to help

I can't even detect my home network. There's a few of the neighbors networks that pop up on and off but it's not consistent.
I'm literally sitting on my workstation which is connected to my home network and I have full bars. On Sense, I also get full bars and WiFi works as expected.

Are you on the stock kernel for CM10? Try flashing another kernel. It could be a kernel issue that you're having. I had this problem When I flashed PACman, and all i did was just flash Rohan's Build 5 and now my WiFi is working just fine.

I'll download rohans kernel as I've been using the built-in Kernal with that comes with CM10.
**Edit: I've installed RoHan's kernel but still the results are the same. The wifi and network become grayed out from time to time and websites fail to load. I know my home connection isn't quite that fast but there is no reason that the connection all together would drop.
my wifi icon on cm10 just turns grey after a while and doesn't receive any data. So i have to toggle it off and then on again to get it to work again

Check your region code under Wifi -> Menu -> Advanced Settings -> Region Code
Make sure it's under US (or wherever you are), reboot and see if that helps.

I'm located in Canada, and I've tried setting it to US and Canada. No dice.
I tried the a different kernel, CM10 nightly, CM10 stable, AOKP, and none of them are working.
I'm having a similar problem. My wifi won't turn on for some reason. It's related to the phone hardware, not my network. And I'm only seeing this problem when flashing the most recent nightly of CM10.
I'm not sure what else to try. Any ideas?
I've tried rohan's kernel as well as setting the region for the WiFi adapter but eventually it happens again. It's not as bad as some of the other posts I've seen, but it does kill data through WiFi at some point and transfer speeds drop.
Is there anyway to get further data on this? I know that my phone doesn't have the hardware "bug" first reported with a few of the devices. Any logs or error reports we can try and gather?
I managed to connect to my home wifi which I was previously unable to connect to, I had to change my router's wireless signal channel from 13 to 1. I am able to hold a signal fine, however I know many of my neighbors networks are not showing up like they should. Similarly, I am also unable to pick up my university network at school.
As I've said, Wifi works fine on Sense.
Is there any way I can help with error reporting in any way? I don't mind donating a bit of money to the CM team and help them get some logs.
It's nice to know I'm not the only one affected.
I would have to say this is completely a Kernel problem. I am having a similar issue in cm10 on N7000. But it's only happens to the some of the routers.
My house's router is a d-link product. And when you are connected you will having no issue, but once you restarted your phone you are getting trouble to reboot the router once to get your self connected again, in the phone, the wifi will stating "Connecting" like forever.
But I am not getting the same trouble when I am with my company's wifi and the Wifi of my friends lynsys. So its hard to tell the developer about this issue because it's not happens to all people. I hopes this info helps. Reboot the router usually works for me.

Unfortunately it's not always possible to reboot the router.
Like I said, I can confirm this issue and anything I can do to help I will try to provide.
These issues with CM10 and the new AOSP will almost make me *shutter's to think this thought* move back to sense.....I'm just not sure what to do. Should we link this to the dev thread?
Edit: I've captured a logcat from me turning on wifi, connecting to a website, and loading a second website to see the behavior. PM me if this would be of use.
This is the only reason I'm using a Sense-based ROM (CleanROM), nightly builds for CM10 run great and I have no other issues, but this one is kind of a deal-breaker for me.

^ this. If you type your password wrong. It will not say "obtaining IP address". It will just say "connecting"(or something like that)..then look like its connected then proceed to cycle reconnecting.
Just to chime in on this, picked up a Pixel yesterday and had the same issue with my 5ghz network. 2.4ghz works fine. Swapped it out for another Pixel today and will be setting it up tonight so will report back. I'm pretty sure mine was a hardware issue!
I wish Google would put a dialog box up saying that the password isn't working. I feel like a lot of people blame the phone/hardware. I've seen this happen on all of my nexus devices and it's ALWAYS because of the password being wrong. I just learned to pay attention to the behavior of the connection status. My passwords at home are ridiculously easy, so I never have the problem there. But it happened with my Pixel at work because I forgot to capitalize a letter.
I guess I'm not saying that it couldn't be hardware related. But I personally would double check my router settings to verify I'm typing what I remember the password to be.

@benrees21 @troy`- Did you guys apply the mini-update Google released for the phones on day 1? That took care of my issue. I experienced the same thing when I first set up my device. After the update, that issue is gone.

Phone is completely up to date! Not a hardware issue, just setting up the new one and same issue! Not a password issue either as it connects to the Internet for a minute then drops out and connects/disconnects constantly. Only happens with the 5ghz network. I've tried messing around with the channels and everything but nothing seems to work!! Wish I knew what was causing it!!

Have you tried resetting your router, just for giggles? You didn't perhaps go into developer settings and check the aggressive wifi to cellular handoff option did you? All I can tell you from experience is that I had the same thing happen and it fixed itself real quick after I did the quick little update. You can also try leaving the area so it drops wifi then going back and seeing if it will remember and connect better the 2nd time. Sorry I can't be more help...
Cannot for the life of me work this out. Tried every configuration I can think of with my 5ghz network and same issue every time. Maybe a future update will sort it out?
Had a WiFi issue with my first pixel. The phone wouldn't even try to connect to 5ghz. And on 2.4, it would drop signal and connect and reconnect constantly. I had them send me a new one and its perfect. No issues whatsoever! You guys probably have a hardware issue. I even tried the system image that Verizon dropped, even though I'm not Verizon and I still had the issue on the first pixel.
Nick
I had the same issue. It all started after I changed a wifi setting on Pixel XL. I changed to Keep Wifi On During Sleep to "Only When Plugged In" and then couldn't connect to Wifi. It would for a little bit after restarting phone but after first disconnect it would Fail to Connect.
I changed setting to "Always" and no issues anymore with wifi.

Is this a hardware issues? or a sw update can fix it?

Have you tried any other 5ghz networks, like maybe at a friend's? That MIGHT help you determine if it's hardware or your specific router/configuration.

My coworker has a new Pixel, been using it for about 10 days without issue but today he came into work looking for help because his Wi-Fi isn't working. It does what OP stated, constantly cycling between "saved", "connecting", "authenticating", "obtaining IP address", and then back to "saved". He reset his home router, was on the phone with Verizon(?) for an hour, he's tried my moto X's 2.4GHz and 5GHz hotspot here at work and can't I can't get it to work. He said the Verizon rep told him it was the SIM card but that's bs. We tried with no SIM installed, no change. We did a reboot into safe mode, no luck. I tried booting into the factory recovery to clear cache but it appears that's not an option. He doesn't want to do a factory reset, I think he's going to get a new one. Will see if they make him do a factory reset prior to replacing or not.
*Edit* Verizon gave him a new Pixel...
I've begun experiencing similar behavior after the VZW update to NDE63X. I can only comment on 2.4GHz as that's all my router has. I doesn't seem to be demolishing the battery, but it's annoying when a web page, or part of a page doesn't load.
Is he rooted or does he have any customizations flashed to his kernel?

No, 100% stock. I was actually trying to convince him to unlock before it got patched, I guess good thing he didn't? What's messed up is that it took over 10 days for it to quit working. What would have happened if he was outside that 15 day window Verizon has. What if he had unlocked it and rooted it? What's to say his new replacement doesn't do the same thing in a month from now?

He still can the exploit wasn't patched in the Nov update from what I've heard. I bought the warranty so I can return mine no matter what!

I just received my Pixel and the 5 ghz channel frequently disconnects then connects again when browsing. The problem happens on the 2.4 ghz channel too. All my other devices work on my router and I have the most recent firmware (I will try a router firmware reset). It happens on both my routers.
Is this a hardware problem or firmware?
Edit: I reset my wifi and started to reconfigure. There were no problems until I activated ipv6 on my router and the wifi started to drop out again.
here is a thread someone posted in the google product support

Other users having this issue have IPv6 activated? Both my routers are from ASUS.
