Hey guys long time since I've been here since moved on to an iPhone 4 however played on a Desire S and am seriously tempted.
I was just wondering because my only quibble is Sense UI, I hate it!
I just prefer stock android.
Is there a way to get rid of Sense UI or possibly a ROM that is just Gingerbread on it's own no custom UI on the top that I could flash the phone with ?
Thanks in advance for any responses.
you can try ADW launcher or there is a CM7 port which has everything other than bluetooth working you can flash that

Not sure if it is possible though.

The construction of the phone and the screen, the size and just the device.
I just like it.
All Samsung phones are just plastic slabs, HTC seam to be the only quality phone maker at the moment.
Desire S with stock Gingerbread like the Nexus One or S would be perfect for me.
Just flash cm7 from the development section, that's essentially stock.

I've tried the current CM7 port and its certainly faster than stock and even faster than LBC.....I believe that they're still looking into improving the battery issues....but great progress is being made with the rom in a very short amount of time....so watch it ....
To think that Sense is the best overlay UI on any Android device not to mention Sense 3.0 that I have right now with Virtuous rom. Why hate it?
Or you could just flash TouchWiz UI on DesireS, though I haven't tried it.
I just want to know if it's possible to have a Desire S without Sense UI ?
Its possible, and someone will make it eventually, its my plan after finishing the cyanogen port

I'm still on the fence on the Desire S, time will tell.

Yeah pretty much I'm not too fussed for a 4" screen it's ok as long as the resolution is high enough.
But yeah the construction and feel of the phone is a real strong point for me.
I've been debating about this over the weekend since I installed ARHD on my Sensation.
I know CM7 is still on Alpha, but I'm wondering if it's worth switching over the CM7. I used to run CM when I had my Nexus, and it was awesome. I don't know why but Sense is just so appealing to look at and the Eye Candy is just awesome, so I'm kind of debating on whether or not I should make the switch to CM7 or not. Also, how's the battery life on CM7 in Alpha? ARHD is giving me pretty much 10-12hours of usage with everything on and fairly heavy usage.
I was using revolution HD for a while on my sensation. I did the XE with beats 3.6.0 upgrade too, and it was nice... although I wanted to give cm7 a try. I am very impressed... for alpha, it is incredibly stable. Camera is nicer, it's nearly instantaneous (where revolution still had a 1-2 second delay between launch and home) boot is faster, battery is better... all sorts of neat things.
Basically you're going to be giving up your Camera, HTC keyboard, Video Recording, Sense Dialer. I tried it and went back to LeeDROiD, because I couldn't handle the camera and missed the keyboard.

If you don't need the eyecandy... go with CM7.
If you do need the eyecandy... go with MiUi.
If you need HTC stuff... stay with Sense. Otherwise CM and MiUi rape Sense on performance.
Personally I use both. I like both and have always been loyal to the CM roms on all my phones. The I lovethe speed of this rom however I do like ARHD. The What ever I feeling that week I run. I keep nandroids of both and keep them up to date and restore when needed.

I agree I have the beats theme with the alien lockscreen. I know many are not impressed with the beats Software however my music sounds great. I use SwiftKey x as well. I just wish there was a bigger selection of skins.

Yeah SwiftKey is the nuts. Just because you have a sense rom doesn't mean you have to use it. Plenty of launchers out there. I'm uprooted using lp+ and the phone is flying. Really tempted to go with arhd though.

In my opinion MiUi is the best ROM. I think it beats out CM for total functionality and the themes and eyecandy are endless. It's CM taken to the next level. I even used to run the Swype keyboard on it with my HD2, haven't tried with the Sensation.

Cm7 alpha 7 as the option to launch up to 4 apps from the lockscreen... That's why we love cm nightly... Updated every night! And we're not even in the official nightly yet
Hi my name is DloBrown and Im A nightly addict who've been sober for too long!!!
There might be too many bugs in CM7 at the moment for me to just jump on to it. How easy is it to keep updating nightlies? Will all my apps stay from each update to update? Helping with the alpha and providing issues may be something that would make me switch over.
using CM7 alpha 7 right now. Loving it. The only thing I missed was the lock screen and alpha 7 has a similar one to sense, so i'm good now. 1080p recording still not active but will be. Also
one other thing I miss about sense was the face book to contacts sync. CM7 can sync them but not as good. I have some contacts under nicknames that sense used to match with my face book friends. But overall I prefer CM7, much smoother and more customizable.

I have Android Revolution 3.60. im on Bell and haven't flashed the recommended radio. Im scared to do so, as my other phone- moto dext would overwrite my existing radio with tmob's if i updated it. Im used to flashing roms with no radio. My battery really sucks it drops like mad and have to constantly charge
CM7 all the way, but...
I have been using CM7 for a couple of weeks, and I can say that even in alpha, this rom is great. The bugs are not that significant (at least for me) and it is extremely fast. I am not big in the eye candy thing, so for me I prefer a simpler rom than one with more bells and whistles.
That being said, ARHD is the best Sense rom out there, especially because it was the first one with full access to the dual core processor. Mike1984 has done a great job with the rom, it is extremely stable and the add-ons are nice. I have to be honest and I don't think that there is a camera app that can beat the Sense one. I am talking about basic functions, meaning taking pics and recording video, as there is no 2-3 seconds delay after pressing the shutter button.
I don't think that CM7 is for everybody (not right now), so if you just want your phone to work flawlessly, I will say go with ARHD.
P.S.: I personally don't like MIUI, it is too iphonish for me, but I would agree with another person in this forum, who says that it is the evolution of CM7. I do like the performance of the rom, just not the look of it, I hope that they bring back the app drawer.
I just wanted to put this out there since people seem to be asking about it time after time.
I enjoy the Sense camera. It is probably my favourite feature of Sense. I also do not like the Camera in AOSP ROMs. It is one of my most hated features of AOSP. But, we cannot at this point have the Sense Camera in AOSP ROMs. I will explain why below.
In the Sense Camera's APK (Package File) the Sense Camera, much like other applications, uses APIs which reference specific parts of the ROM its running. For example, in Holo-looking apps, all the stuff drawn for the most part is not coded into there using images. Instead, it references the image files and layouts from the framework of ICS ROMs (which is also why Holo apps will probably never work on GB either).
This is very similar to the situation that the Sense camera on AOSP is in. Sense is not just a "skin" sitting atop Android. It is integrated directly into the framework of the ROM. It contains APIs that are not usually present in AOSP ROMs. Because of this, it is impossible currently to run the Sense camera in the AOSP environment. However, if someone was to decompile the Sense camera and edit the smali (probably one of the hardest things to do and also the most annoying) then we could run it. But thats nearly impossible since you would need to edit the smali directly since there is no source code for the Sense parts.
If you want the Sense Camera, then use a Sense based ROM. You will most probably never be able to run the Sense camera on AOSP ROMs.
For now, in AOSP I am using "UCam" from the market. It has a bunch of the features from the Sense camera that I enjoy.
Thx rohan. I appreciate all your work. I have aokp as a nandroid right now on my phone but am back on cleanrom just because of the camera. The rest of the rom is amazing. I will give ucam a shot.

Thanks for posting this. As a huge fan of the Sense camera app, it's disappointing to read, but it's also good to know the technical details behind the limitations.
Not to mention proprietary drivers for the image sense chip. You won't get those either.

I'm in love with Nocturnal's Senseless ROM at the moment.
Which, while I'm sure is built upon sense, has a nearly complete AOSP look and feel....and has the awesome sense camera UI.
A worthy compromise?
I'm so glad that this thread exists. I assumed that this was the reason that I hadn't seen the Sense camera ported to any AOSP ROM and having it confirmed just puts my mind at ease. Now I don't need to keep hunting and waiting. I've been trying out UCam and it's been working pretty great. I still miss the tight integration with the image chip and can notice a difference between the Sense camera and other apps, but I figure it's just a compromise I have to make to get all the best features of custom ROMs.
I would love to see this exist! If someone can point me in the direction of where to learn I'm sure I could try!

I meant no disrespect when I expressed my concerns. I was just curious if this could be done. I understand the situation much better now, and thanks for the further clarification.

Honestly not having the Sense camera is whats holding me back from flashing other roms, you really never know how good it is till you use other rom cameras.
I take a lot of pics (instagram junkie) and when I compare pic quality its almost night and day. There are some great - teriffic roms out, but the sense camera is just that good.

We had a discussion about this over in the AOKP thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29914879&postcount=1417
Long story short - a lot of what makes the Sense camera better is the fact it automatically sharpens the image and does a bit of noise reduction.
In MIUI V5 they use sense camera, and I dont think MIUI is based on sense framework. Is it? If not how have they done it?

Its all preference. However you may find some of the sense apps more to your liking. Such as the camera, email, and SMS. You can download Cleanrom DE. It is a desensed ROM. Basically and Aosp look with the sense apps.
Several roms have the option to desense I was just curious if there was other benefits such as better battery life or if removing sense which is known to be somewhat of a resource hog would give a better multitasking experience.
I like sense, but wouldn't want to give up a longer battery life for it.

Hey guys,
I have an unlocked & rooted One XL on Telstra.
I am using the stock ROM until i have sussed stable custom ROMs.
I however dont like sense, and am using Apex Pro Launcher.
Im finding that unlocking from sleep & even switching between screens and apps it sometimes stutters.
Sense was actually a smoother experience.
Would this be that sense is still underlying in the background?
If so, can it be removed / disabled whilst on stock ROM?
Any tips on getting the UI to operate more smoothly?

Sense has not gone anywhere... It is still there, you're just using a different launcher. There is an option in Apex to "Keep in memory" in the advanced settings that you could try enabling. You could also try a custom rom like RebelROM, CleanROM, Nocturnal Xi40, or Viper XL, all of which offer a "desensing" option to remove a good chunk of sense while keeping the sweet camera working.

Understood. I know sense is still there. Being new to android im still trying to understand the relationships behind these things.
IE; sense is still running / slowing **** down despite not using it as my launcher?
Are there any good tutorials on sense, what it is, what it does?
Ive searched the forums but cant find anything.
As an android newbie im taking my mates advice and not messing about with any ROMs until i have a better understanding.
Until then i guess i just wanna 'desense' as much as i can on the stock rom.

Sense is more than just the launcher. Its also apps (like camera, Locations, Watch, Stocks, Weather, Music player), widgets, keyboard, and overall theming done by HTC. Plus the Sense framework is embedded in the ROM itself, so that is why Sense components (like the camera) can't be ported to AOSP ROMs. So that is what is meant by "Sense is still there" if you just replace certain components, or use a different launcher.
By replacing the launcher, you won't have the Sense launcher taking up memory (3rd party launchers are often smaller footprint). But really, this phone is powerful enough memory and CPU wise, that the difference in just replacing the launcher is negligible. On older phones (like my old Desire Z) it made a big difference. And the battery drain by Sense is also going to be negligible compared to things that suck up much more power, such as screen on time, downloading/streaming data, etc. So on this phone, its largely about personal preference.

Also, i had a problem in my first month with data.
So i downloaded My Data Manager.
OS services uses more than 50% of my data. Approx 1mb per hour.
I googled it, i got a lot of different responses.
What is OS services and why is it chewing my data, what do i need to turn off?
Also as i was looking online for answers, WhatsApp had jumped from less than 1mb, to 11.1mb in less than 5 minutes.
I havent used WhatsApp in days. Its not possible to change permissions through the app but i have read that i can download an app to manually change specific app permissions?

I used to use CM, but I find viper to be excellent. Actually, it's amazing. It's stable and has an arsenal of tweaks. The best one out there IMHO. But that's just my opinion, and your mate has one too. Unfortunately all you'll find on here is opinions, the best way to know is to flash it for yourself and see what you think as everyone has different needs etc when it comes to what they want from a ROM.
Oh but by the way, ViperXL has Sense 4.1 which is so much faster than the 4.0 on stock ROM. Supposedly uses less battery too. And the updated camera4.5 takes much better photos, they're superb!

I doubt AOSP will be able to make the Duo Camera work. So, no special effects like focusing on different parts and other junk like that.
Might as well stick with Sense 6. It seems to be working very well so far.

HTC wants 3rd party development on the camera. They released an SDK. That may help.

My issues with sense revolves around the lockscreen and how it handles notification sounds.
With sense in place dashclock, which I prefer, I can't replace the stock lockscreen. Even using AOSP lock screen on Viper is not optimal since my tasker script does not allow me to situationally disable/reenable the lock screen.
There seems to be an issue on how sense handles notifications. I use a third party app to give me situational sound profiles, similar to what is offered in CM. When using it with sense I don't get reliable results. The built in sound profiles in sense aren't flexible enough.
Maybe I've just been using AOSP too long but I find sense too restrictive for how I use my phone.

surprisingly enough i dont mind sense...not the case with that steaming load Samsung calls Touchwiz. I would like to get back to aosp roms but i want the sense camera or one that can utilize the dual camera functions. That wont be long off...htc release the api for the dual camera so there will be options soon enough

can the gpe on the international edition not utilize the dual camera functions? if it can, i don;t see why aosp roms cannot just keep the camera driver and the camera app from gpe.
sense is a million times better than the touchwiz garbage, but nothing is a little better than sense.
I'm taking a # ....

i havent tried GPE but my guess is no. GPE is straight up aosp and the dual camera software is part of sense 6...not aosp

I actually LIKE Sense (and completely agree about TouchWiz.) I have liked Sense back to the earliest versions but CyanogenMod has been my daily driver for a very long time. I am delighted to see Invisiblek is on the M8 project, I hope CM will be here soon and I'll be switching ROMs as I did with my Galaxy S3 and S4, running CyanogenMod until a problem shows up in a nightly and then switching back to Andybone's most excellent Bonestock ROM until CM gets fixed again. Eventually, CM became perfect (for me) on the Galaxy phones and I could stop switching and I know that's what will happen with the M8.

"Frankly, it'd be silly to have extra hardware on a phone that's completely unusable, so the Google Play edition will still take advantage of the Duo Camera functionality. Predictably, the app itself is the stock Google version, but the HTC magic comes out as soon as you enter the Photos app and try editing your shots. You'll be prompted to open up "HTC Photo Edit," and you'll see a screen that looks much like what you'd find in the Sense gallery, but with fewer options: UFocus, Dimension Plus and Touch Up are the only Duo Camera-esque effects listed, which means the Foregrounder, Seasons and Copy/Paste functions didn't make the cut. (Filters, frames and tools are still hanging out on the right sidebar.) UFocus is our favorite of the Duo Camera options, so we're glad to see it there, but Dimension Plus is a useless and gimmicky feature that we just don't use very often."

it seems like the driver and photo editing software that is the real key behind dual cameras is on gpe so those should port over seamlessly to aosp based roms.

I doubt AOSP will be able to make the Duo Camera work. So, no special effects like focusing on different parts and other junk like that.
Might as well stick with Sense 6. It seems to be working very well so far.

actually, they've opened up the API for the cam and the GPE edition uses it, so there IS hope..

so you're saying they built a phone with hardware not utilized by the software?
i dont see a reason for the dual camera not to work on the GPE edition.
