No Sense UI, Stock Gingerbread ? - HTC Desire S

Hey guys long time since I've been here since moved on to an iPhone 4 however played on a Desire S and am seriously tempted.
I was just wondering because my only quibble is Sense UI, I hate it!
I just prefer stock android.
Is there a way to get rid of Sense UI or possibly a ROM that is just Gingerbread on it's own no custom UI on the top that I could flash the phone with ?
Thanks in advance for any responses.

you can try ADW launcher or there is a CM7 port which has everything other than bluetooth working you can flash that

Literally just want stock android 2.3 like you get on the Nexus S.
Not sure if it is possible though.

The construction of the phone and the screen, the size and just the device.
I just like it.
All Samsung phones are just plastic slabs, HTC seam to be the only quality phone maker at the moment.
Desire S with stock Gingerbread like the Nexus One or S would be perfect for me.

Just flash cm7 from the development section, that's essentially stock.

i have never used official cm7 before (have used some ports) so i maybe misguided

I've tried the current CM7 port and its certainly faster than stock and even faster than LBC.....I believe that they're still looking into improving the battery issues....but great progress is being made with the rom in a very short amount of time....so watch it ....

To think that Sense is the best overlay UI on any Android device not to mention Sense 3.0 that I have right now with Virtuous rom. Why hate it?
Or you could just flash TouchWiz UI on DesireS, though I haven't tried it.

I just want to know if it's possible to have a Desire S without Sense UI ?

Its possible, and someone will make it eventually, its my plan after finishing the cyanogen port

Good to hear man!
I'm still on the fence on the Desire S, time will tell.

why don't you consider the incredible s? It seems to have a lot more support. Not that i wouldn't want you to get the desire s

Well, the incredible s is a great phone.. but cost more money and is bigger

& the desire S has unibody aluminium & feels nicer to hold

Yeah pretty much I'm not too fussed for a 4" screen it's ok as long as the resolution is high enough.
But yeah the construction and feel of the phone is a real strong point for me.

Hi guys, it looks like the G2X will be out at 20th April, but I know that few of you have the device now (for testing purposes, etc.).
Would you mind taking some time, and sharing with us dump of /system and boot partitions?

Today is officialy out
I really hope the G2X Vanilla ROM does not have the same lags as the optimized O2X ROM from MoDaCo.
Well, MoDaCo Rom is much much better than original. But just try to add a widget - Why the hell does it take so long to show the whole list...? On my Desire it appears immediately...

Its definitely a ROM problem,
In the past T-Mobile's ROM's have been decent, very lightweight and fast, and i would expect nothing less this time.
I still think the G2 ROM is one of the best Froyo ROM's out there

I'd love to know if the G2X firmware can be run on the regular 2X. The thought of running the LG firmware isn't all that appealing

Am hoping the ROMs will be fully interchangeable between the devices.
Otherwise, I may stay with the stock ROM for awhile - of course, after rooting, flashing recovery, and freezing unwanted apps with titanium. And maybe an overclock kernel (if compatible).
Since it should be an open device, I don't think it will be long before XDA ports a 2.3 ROM for it.

NexuS has pretty same hardware. Even better cam..
I sold NexuS because I missed some of the sense things:
the stock dialer has NO t9 search - most dialer from market are crap or slow or somehow frickled on the stock dialer. Even old nokia do have a quick search option...
Stock contacts are ugly.
GAL (global adress list for exchange server) is NOT implemented in android 2.x - only in 3.0; but it's implemented since sense1 (hero)
CM had some issues - espacially with the notification bar/speed settings - on 2.3 - the new sense 3.0 lockscreen and notification bar are very good - so no need for CM at the moment - for _me_
So I deleted most of sense.apk from /system on my DesireS (all widgets, all "htc", like route66, amazon, stockexchange..) and do use adw-launcher instead of rosie (don't delete it cause is needed for lockscreen settings!) - but do have integrated company exchange and a good biult in dialer, cool contacts (with flickr and fb content) and nice lockscreen..

Sense is THE BEST ANDROID UI, EVAR. Don't know why people wanna "DE-SENSE" their phones. I'm gonna flash CM7 to see what the fuss is about , but sense 3.0 first Hopefully, the new official version of CM7 will come for DS too. I'd rather let the ports pass on...........

There's plenty of HTC phones out there that are running custom ROMs and customised user interfaces that don't rely on Sense. It may be the "out of the box experience" as far as most HTC phones are concerned, but isn't that what all THIS (ie these forums) is about - customisations, and thinking "out of the box"? (no pun intended, haha).
If we all concentrated on Sense and variations on that theme then this community would be a much poorer one.
Peace
sense ftw!
Well, i love sense, but i am porting the cm7 just so people have the choose, and also to make the development on this device more alive
But personally, Sense is the thing!

MT4GS HTC Sense 2.1 ROM + 3.0 features (i.e Lockscreen, weather videos, etc.)

Can I ask for an HTC Sense 2.1 rom? I really find the Sense 3.0 rosie a hassle and the carousel, though pretty cool, gets annoying when I need to quickly scroll to a certain homescreen. Also I prefer the smooth basic screen transitions of Sense 2.1 as opposed to the 3D effect transition on Sense 3.0 roms.
Actually, IMO, the best rom would be an HTC Sense 2.1 with Sense 3.0 features (lockscreen mainly) fusion. Can anyone make it happen? (aka Undeadk9)
FOR A BETTER IDEA OF WHAT I'M SAYING, here's a Tmobile G2/HTC Desire Z running an HTC 2.1 base+3.0 rom: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQ-kNW-nGFA
Ummm no. Sense 3.0 is so much better. No dev would do that. It's not something a large group of people would use.

You're right but I just want to make sure: Is it possible to downgrade our MT4GS's Sense 3.0 to Sense 2.1? If so, how? (I'd like to design a custom rom myself )
You would need to find a phone compatible with our device. I'm thinking the MT4G or Desire HD and port it to Doubleshot.

I realized that it's possible to port the Sense 3.0 rosie to a Sense 2.1 rom. I'm wondering if it's possible to port the Sense 2.1 rosie to our MT4GS's Sense 3.0?

I could probably do that, but I only make ROMS I intend on using, I'm pretty busy with school and work, but If I have a free weekend I might give it a try. However I don't think it would be worth it, a lot of features would be cut, since I wouldn't spend time optimizing it for the MT4GS, just the basic 2.1 ROM.

Thanks dude, I appreciate it alot man. And I know what you mean about busy. 5 AP classes + a job leaves very little free time, let alone the fact that you have other stuff to do. But if you could get the basic Sense 2.1 rosie and perhaps provide me tips on how to implement the widgets (especially the clock widget, it's basically the trademark of Sense haha), that would be all I'd need.
Also, couldn't you literally just replace the Rosie from a MyTouch4g/DesireHD sense 2.1 rom, as well as the other htc widgets as Seo did to bring a Sense 3.0 port to Sense 2.1 roms?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1062962
The reason I want this is simply because I hate the carousel of Sense 3.0 (it still lags occasionally), but love the widgets.
I simply don't like the features of LPP or ADW because, in those launchers I can't use Sense widgets...

You're right I haven't tried it yet. I'll give it a shot sometime later. Too lazy to s-off and sort it out. I just hate the 3d flip animation, I like the smooth screen transitions that were on the older Sense rosies.
I'm still contemplating whether I want this phone or return and exchange for a Sensation. Of course either way, it's Sense 3.0 carousel.

KEEP IT. The Sensation is a piece of crap, I worked for T-Mobile and we have returns on them more than anything. They overheat, the touchscreen is highly unresponsive, and the screens look mediocre... Even after installing custom ROMs they still have issues.

Yea, but there's so many devs for the Sensation, I wish our MT4GS had more...
Oh and btw, those devs just ported over the HTC Amaze 4G's (aka MT4GS's) camera to their Sensations. WOOW is all I can say.
Plus, with the second coming of smartphones in the HTC Amaze and SGSII, there'll be even less reason for future devs to work on this phone.
Gotta admit though that I like the hardware keyboard as an additional option for typing. It may be crappy compared to the G2, but I've never used a slider-phone before.
And, I hate the designs of the Amaze and GSII, they're even more curvy than the MT4GS and Sensation, lol.
Sorry...to get back on topic, Undeadk9, would it be much simpler to port the Sense 2.1 rosie over onto a Sense 3.0 rom? Rather than modding an entire rom? And is it as easy as I think it is?

I agree. Keep the phone. Plus this cpu is meant to clock at 1.5ghz. The sensations is right where its suppose to be. Plus this device has a way better processor. And the keyboard is a huge plus.

In another phone, you can just trick Rosie into thinking it's running on a Sense 2.1 device and it will run in 2.1 mode. However, I don't think it's possible with the native MT4GS Rosie since it's specifically compiled for us/TMO. I could be wrong though, worth decompiling it and taking a look at it.
I wouldn't run Sense 2.1 though. That's boring.
Or maybe you could exchange it for a desire hd or mytouch 4g since you're looking for older software. there's not going to be a whole lot of demand for older software on a newer device unfortunately.

That's exactly what I don't want, as you can see the MT4GS is SUPERIOR to those devices. But I really prefer the simplicity of the old sense, and combined with a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, it would be 1000000x faster + no lag. Why would I want to go back to the "Stone Age" so to speak?
Really and truly it's the carousel that bothers me, if I didn't have to deal with the carousel on Sense 3, it would be just fine.
And let's just put it this way: Sense 2.1 is exactly what Sense 3.0 is WITHOUT the carousel. So for those of you who don't prefer the carousel, this is what you want. Of course there's the lockscreen, but I'm talking purely on the basis of the rosies.
Sorry for the double post, my previous one was loaded.
I'll just say that Ima try and put one together myself.
I also posted a video on what I mean by Sense 2.1+3.0. (Check first post)
I also posted a poll to gather the opinion of users in this forum.
If there are too many No's, then I will stop this thread from further discussion.
So you just want the sense 2.1 interface but with sense 3.0 basically. Why don't you try a new launcher?

All of this nonsense because you dislike the 3.0 carousel? Im sorry but you have lost your mind. And your to lazy to s off? Its a 5 min process Thats completely automated and pain free. But yet you want to design a rom which could take days maybe weeks? All Im seeing is a huge lack of common sense.

without sense is not an htc!....is just another phone, like others...only who have an htc deserves sense!...
I understood sense after months...is so elegant, so beautiful, useful, you got everything under your finger...fast, veeery smooth, more than all other launchers, and very stable...
social integration, widgets, animation...everything STOCK!...
yesterday I tried ordroid....I think that roms are not enough stable, even if BT is the only bug...but is awesome, very very nice feel and look...is much better than 3.6, but the launcher is a bit laggy
about sense 4.0
I used Ordroid 1.72 sense 4.0, i really like it but my battery is ending to fast, i have the newest firmware, like 12 hours and i need to recharge again, anyone knows why ?
Think Ordroid is Most stabile out there and baads IC. Besids Bt, everything is fine, But i prefer 3.6, more smooth

Which Sense 4 ROM has the best battery life? I keep switching between Sense 3.6
and Senseless ICS but Sense has a lot of nice features that no other has. I haven't tried Sense 4 yet but I hear it's much better. Don't have a charger with me all day to test right now.

every time i have used anything other than sense it all looks and feels so bland to me...no-sense is like a communist phone to me...i know it's lol, but really and truly, i find no-sense android to be oppressive

To add to this, a bunch of non-HTC users can't all be wrong. I have a number of friends with various other brands of phone, and whatever other good points they might like about their phone, the one thing they most often comment on is how much they like the look and feel of Sense compared to whatever is on their phone.
Yes personal preference is fine, yes Sense is not going to be 100% perfect, but I'll take 90% over 70% any day. Who knows, maybe HTC users are a bit spoilt?

i myself definitely think that's the case...i tried no-sense and AOSP because everyone on these boards constantly complains about how slow/delayed/retarded Sense is, one member even telling me i was lying to myself and to others...though i did in fact notice a difference, in actuality it amounted to about a half second delay's difference

It's not so much the speed for me, but the visual lag. on AOSP-senseless my framerate is a constant 60 FPS, which is good, really smooth. On Sense 3.6, 4.0, whatever, I've dipped to 15 FPS before. Like, the homescreen is decently smooth but my Music Queue is ridiculously laggy.
On a sidenote, straight up AOSP is no faster than Senseless, I don't care what anyone says.

how do you feel about the user experience when running a Sense ROM but with an alternate launcher? faster/same/useless??

I've run a couple of different launchers on Sense ROMs and they are just that...different. They can be faster, and the ability to customise more (transition animations and the like) is a plus, but if you crank all the settings up and choose the most complex animations you are bound to create some lag. My first thought on using a new launcher was "wow this is so much smoother and faster" but once I started delving into all the different options I realised quite a few of those things are default and unchangeable on Sense whilst the custom launchers come a bit more 'stripped back'.
I'm currently using GO Launcher but not because I didn't like Sense, and GO Launcher has been fun but it's certainly presented its own issues. I'm actually considering going back to Sense for a while.

[DISCUSS] Sense 3.6 with Android 4.0 ICS

Hello fellow XDA-Dev Desire S owners.
So, it seems, that the upcoming FOTA update for the Desire S(Saga) will not feature the Sense 4.0, instead of it, we will be getting the Sense 3.6 and with it we will lose the beloved Sense 3 bottom menu bar in the stock HTC Sense skin and it will be replaced by the hideous "box" layout of the newer Sense UI
For me, that was enough of a reason to flash my Desire S and install the Endymion V3.5 ROM.
What do other XDA-Dev users think about this "update"?
This has been known for a while and to be honest I'm fine with it. In fact we're lucky to be receiving an update. If I were HTC I'd do the same. If old phones are updated to sense 4.0, who's going to buy new phones? Business is business.
I think the look is much sleeker as well. I prefer it
Also it may just be easier to stick to the off topic thread

I love the "box" (how u call it)
I always didnt like sense... this changed with sense 3.6 and 4
Written in bad english with my HTC Desire S
Afraid you may be alone disliking the 'box', I think it's a great step forward, making proper use of the screen space, with more icons
And as already said afraid that this is old news

For 1 the new ICS dock bar looks NOTHING like you described and as you pictured. our bar goes all the way to end of the screens. the 1 u pictured is sense 4a our new bar is elegant and beautiful. most people are glad to get rid of that old sense bar. For me its all about moving on and the newer the better. if u want the beautiful stock GB bar then DONT bother upgrading. Or u can simply mod your rom to have the old dock bar dont open a thread just to slag off a rom you clearly know NOTHING about
IMHO...Its nice with the newer looks..u get a lot of customisation option here...create shortcuts and folders...earlier sense seems liked it didn't used the screenspace provided..

Ummm... yeah, so?
No offence, but this is stale news by now... this thread was opened as a result of the thread you linked, so i think you're either trying to make a mysterious valid point that i fail to see... or you're generally clueless about what's been happening here since the Virtuous_Saga ROM was announced. Or maybe it's just update fever??

I suspect that's it's update fever, it does appear that people have gone a little crazy since the latest leak, football must be HTC employee!
If everyone else updates another thread with that latest virtuous thread link I swear I'll explode

Love the new ui
Been running the Primo 3.5 for some time and loving it. Then for a few weeks ago i reverted back to a 3.5 sense rom to get camera working. Even thou it runs and feels nice i think the new UI is nicer and more smothe.
One X is the **** but Desire S is the bombe
Just installed yesterday the Virtuous Saga 1.0.0, 'till now everything is perfect I could say, I'm navigating on the internet on wireless and listening to some music for about 2h, the battery went down only to 99%, I will come back in a few days with a (hopefully) positive feedback.

Think that the HTC update is a great thing that they are doing, too many times people are moaning that they cant get the updated version.
You can always run a Virtuous one though or even the the AOKP Ver 36 from tectas that is amazing
Why bother with Sense 3.6 if we have Nova Launcher? It's much more fast then this HTC bloatware named Sense.
I think the best idea for this thread, is to change the title to discussion of Sense 3.6 in general. That way more of us can engage into conversation, talking about bugs, and what we'd like tweaks we'd like to see implemented in future releases.
looks forward to it very much
Personally i loved the update, the battery is simply amazing and the issues that i was having with the usb are gone (flaky usb, when switching modes i had to click it thrice, regardless of ROM) the performance is swell and i think the camera quality ~might~ be better?
Even if we don't like sense 3.6, it just means that we're going to have more options soon (CM9, AOKP, MIUI, Etc..) which ALREADY run like a charm on our DS.
Cheer up people ^w^
Not the first one to report it. But I could confirm the battery mod is reading the false battery capacity

I agree with you there... It happens once the battery drops below 30%
I guess the uot kitchen needs to be updated for the newer sense versions
