AOSP for Desire S - HTC Desire S

i did start this thread in the general section when i had fewer than 10 posts, so sorry about the repost.
i have been wondering if any work has been done porting aosp to the desire s or if anyone could point me to the proper tutorials on how to do it, though i will have little time to work on it during the next 3 months or so.
cheers

it would indeed seem that way. just pulled the cm sources to see if adding a new device wasn't too hard a task and it seems there already has been some work done towards porting it to the saga (aka desire s). finally some good news

Hope the port for Saga comes soon. Really look forward to getting rid of Sense.

NexuS has pretty same hardware. Even better cam..
I sold NexuS because I missed some of the sense things:
the stock dialer has NO t9 search - most dialer from market are crap or slow or somehow frickled on the stock dialer. Even old nokia do have a quick search option...
Stock contacts are ugly.
GAL (global adress list for exchange server) is NOT implemented in android 2.x - only in 3.0; but it's implemented since sense1 (hero)
CM had some issues - espacially with the notification bar/speed settings - on 2.3 - the new sense 3.0 lockscreen and notification bar are very good - so no need for CM at the moment - for _me_
So I deleted most of sense.apk from /system on my DesireS (all widgets, all "htc", like route66, amazon, stockexchange..) and do use adw-launcher instead of rosie (don't delete it cause is needed for lockscreen settings!) - but do have integrated company exchange and a good biult in dialer, cool contacts (with flickr and fb content) and nice lockscreen..

Sense is THE BEST ANDROID UI, EVAR. Don't know why people wanna "DE-SENSE" their phones. I'm gonna flash CM7 to see what the fuss is about , but sense 3.0 first Hopefully, the new official version of CM7 will come for DS too. I'd rather let the ports pass on...........

I don't complain about having Sense and can live with it but would prefer to run clean Android build when/if it becomes available.

I get the sarcasm, but well, imo WebOS is a really good os. It's too new and has veeeeerrry less apps. In abou 1-2 years maybe, it'll become as good as android is today.

had there been better WebOS devices on the market, i would probably have bought one of those instead. i've been told that app development is a lot easier than on any other platform. and as soon as i get some time, i might just look into writing apps for android.

There's plenty of HTC phones out there that are running custom ROMs and customised user interfaces that don't rely on Sense. It may be the "out of the box experience" as far as most HTC phones are concerned, but isn't that what all THIS (ie these forums) is about - customisations, and thinking "out of the box"? (no pun intended, haha).
If we all concentrated on Sense and variations on that theme then this community would be a much poorer one.
Peace

sense ftw!

Well, i love sense, but i am porting the cm7 just so people have the choose, and also to make the development on this device more alive
But personally, Sense is the thing!

Try Beautiful Widgets, and no the Sense UI and Cy mod are not capable together. Maybe the kernel will sometime but not the actual rom. BTW major off with the section try Q&A next time before you get flamed hard.
possible Yes the other way around
you can have an htc rom and "some stuff from Cyanogenmod like video cam possibly BT

This is development. You had an extremely simple question that could've been answered in cm's thread, or better yet in Q&A if you insist that your question is important enough to warrant it's own thread. Respect gets respect, even on the internet.

No because it's so much easier to port a whole ROM over than it is to do a hybrid. Theoretically, it would be possible to take the frameworks of Sense and apply them to the source.
Besides, your analogy seems kind of flawed. It's like saying a few days ago, "If it was possible to get full 3D and Video Acceleration on 2.1 we would've already done it." And all it took was one very dedicated and intelligent coder named Cyanogen doing it.

agreed. probably possible.. but whats the use?
Even if it was possible we have to remember it has been out for two days and is an experimental rom. NOBODY wants to work for a few hours for a couple days only to have a new, more stable rom come out that could potentially break the work they just finished. They would rather have a rom that is "stable" and won't be replaced within days (Meaning yes, a long-term rom that won't be updated for 2+ weeks).

By the time that happens we will have all discarded our G1's. Do remember people do this as a hobby not for a job, that's for actual devs that do it for a job.
Here are some sense similar apps:
-Weather wid donate
-Hero Settings widgets
-Pandahero
-GDE+Hero theme
-Pure widget series(Cal,music,etc) by Koxx

to all you Sense UI haters...

HTC evo can run (out of the box) stock android w/ nexus launcher and all.

I don't know if this has been posted before, since I'm in a rush to prom I havent been able to check. anyways, htc has done another thing right. yay! haha
1. There is already a topic about this.
2. There is NO WAY to run the phone without Sense UI without installing a custom ROM. Sense UI is highly integrated into the OS. The video that you see is the EVO running launcher2.apk instead of Rosie.apk (the Sense home app). This is nothing new or exciting, so I wish people would stop making damn topics about it.
Hey man, you gotta understand i didnt search and couldnt search. Also, i know you cant completely replace sense ui on a stock rom but some people like the launcher2.apk better. So sorry for double posting bud

For many this is true. For others, I suspect there are multiple motivations for wanting a pure android. I suspect most fall into one or more of 3 categories.
They may want pure as the driven snow Open Source Android
They might want as few of what they don't need as possible for increased resources
They simply don't like the HTC and it's prettiness
To each his own. As long as you're on Android, we are on the same side. Viva La Evo! Viva Android! Death to Apple!
I like Android Sense. Makes the transition from WM6.5 Sense a lot smother for me
I dont think anyone would deny that fact that Sense looks amazing. I just want to shut it off to save my battery. From what i hear, sense is quite the juice hog.

You won't save much battery if you turn Sense off. Unless you just have pages full of self updating widgets or something.
love the 2.1 UI.im GOING for that instead of the SENSE
Yeah... I'm looking forward to a stock froyo EVO as soon as possible... best of luck to those with the skill to make it happen
Or at least sense with the stock 2.2 launcher. I actually like the default contacts and messaging apps for sense. Not to mention the clock is way better too, and camera has tap to focus. One thing AOSP has for me though is the look, the white and orange are very appeasing for some reason.
im jus hopeing HTC keeps their promise of updating the SUPERSONIC in july to FROYO 2.2(love the UI).gonna love the phone even more.

hhmm, goofy quote, I'll say that.
HTC Sense is "attractive", but not for everyone.
The first time I played with Sense was on a Hero ROM on my G1. Then again with the Desire ROM on my Nexus.
Even with the Nexus speed increase, it was definitely NOT sexy.
I really like the Plain Jane look of Androidâ„¢ raw.

With my understanding should be sense 2.0?
That's photoshop'd - why would HTC put new Sense on a Wildfire before any of the high end devices??
It could be a custom creation, but i doubt it that HTC would like that.

That's not Wildfire, but Wildfire 2.
As for Sense, there are distinguishing features on launcher:
1. 1.0 -> Up arrow | Phone | Plus button
2. 2.0 -> Up arrow | Phone | Customization button
3. ?3.0 -> List button | Phone | Customization button
Of course, it could be updated Sense 2, maybe 2.5.
Still doesn't mean it's not super imposed onto it does it?
Promo videos always show things off that aren't real
looks like it could be more of a hack than an update (or photoshop as suggested)

It's pretty clear it ain't fake. So the only question remains: Is it upgraded Sense 2 or brand new Sense 3? We will find out after week or so.
Sense "2.0" most likely.
Seriously, what makes this real?? Heard of concept designs??
As I said, until I see a fully working handset being demo'd in a video I will consider this a marketing venture and nothing more. You guys keep believing it's real...it's like me editing a home screen and taking a picture and going "yeah look at my new Sense 20.1"

Could be, however after scouring the internet for articles about weather the origional HTC Desire was going to get the HTC Desire HD Sense update, I couldn't find a thing. So I did what no one dares do, and sent an E-Mail to HTC. Surprisingly, this is the reply I got.
Dear Michael James Stott,
Thank you for contacting HTC, regarding the HTC Sense.
Sense at the moment is only incorporated into our newer devices as we aim to show progression. However when the updates come in from Google for us to configure. There will often be some suprises in the update but the software engineers wont even tell us as its all network depended.
To send a reply to this message or let me know I have successfully answered your question log in to our ContactUs site using your email address and your ticket number 11GBCW07ENA001487.
Sincerely,
Mohammed

Now although 'Mohammed' hasn't confirmed anything there, surely it looks promising and its better than a template reply of 'we are not allowed to comment' or whatever they put?

No Sense UI, Stock Gingerbread ?

Hey guys long time since I've been here since moved on to an iPhone 4 however played on a Desire S and am seriously tempted.
I was just wondering because my only quibble is Sense UI, I hate it!
I just prefer stock android.
Is there a way to get rid of Sense UI or possibly a ROM that is just Gingerbread on it's own no custom UI on the top that I could flash the phone with ?
Thanks in advance for any responses.
you can try ADW launcher or there is a CM7 port which has everything other than bluetooth working you can flash that

The construction of the phone and the screen, the size and just the device.
I just like it.
All Samsung phones are just plastic slabs, HTC seam to be the only quality phone maker at the moment.

To think that Sense is the best overlay UI on any Android device not to mention Sense 3.0 that I have right now with Virtuous rom. Why hate it?

Yeah pretty much I'm not too fussed for a 4" screen it's ok as long as the resolution is high enough.

MT4G finally gets some good news

http://www.androidcentral.com/htc-says-first-ice-cream-sandwich-updates-coming-march-adds-more-phones-list
According to HTC, the Desire HD is confirmed to get an official ICS OTA! As we all know, the DHD and MT4G have nearly identical hardware and ROMs are very easy to port between the two. The stock DHD ICS ROM would make a perfect (read: fully functional) base for the MT4G. Assuming we still have decent devs in a few months, we should have a very nice ICS ROM.

As far as specs, yes. Historically speaking, DHD ROMs do still have to be ported to an extent. However, I would expect a fully working camera will be extremely easy with a DHD dump as a base.

I saw that, but isn't that complete crap? Just seems highly unlikely to me. My bet is HTC doesn't consider it worth it, because the myTouch series of phones has that ugly TMO-customized version of Sense. So they'd put a lot of work in customizing that UI to work on ICS for only two phones, one of which is nearing a year and a half old. I just don't see it happening.
