I asked this in a rom thread but I think this is a better place for it. What are the benefits to desensing? Is it just a personal preference or does it give other benefits?

Its all preference. However you may find some of the sense apps more to your liking. Such as the camera, email, and SMS. You can download Cleanrom DE. It is a desensed ROM. Basically and Aosp look with the sense apps.
Several roms have the option to desense I was just curious if there was other benefits such as better battery life or if removing sense which is known to be somewhat of a resource hog would give a better multitasking experience.
I like sense, but wouldn't want to give up a longer battery life for it.

I get about the same battery life on stock and aokp 1.3
In excited to try viperxl this weekend though
Sent from the abstraction layer.
I am using the viper xl rom right now. It has a few small glitches but it's without a doubt the best xl rom out there right now.

YMMV, but CleanROM 4.5 DE definitely has slightly better performance and battery life than CR4.5 and stock because of the debloating/desensing.

I believe it is preference. I go through phases where I love sense but I have also gone through phase where I have gotten bored of it. It really depends on what you wish to use.

Hey guys,
I have an unlocked & rooted One XL on Telstra.
I am using the stock ROM until i have sussed stable custom ROMs.
I however dont like sense, and am using Apex Pro Launcher.
Im finding that unlocking from sleep & even switching between screens and apps it sometimes stutters.
Sense was actually a smoother experience.
Would this be that sense is still underlying in the background?
If so, can it be removed / disabled whilst on stock ROM?
Any tips on getting the UI to operate more smoothly?

Sense has not gone anywhere... It is still there, you're just using a different launcher. There is an option in Apex to "Keep in memory" in the advanced settings that you could try enabling. You could also try a custom rom like RebelROM, CleanROM, Nocturnal Xi40, or Viper XL, all of which offer a "desensing" option to remove a good chunk of sense while keeping the sweet camera working.

Understood. I know sense is still there. Being new to android im still trying to understand the relationships behind these things.
IE; sense is still running / slowing **** down despite not using it as my launcher?
Are there any good tutorials on sense, what it is, what it does?
Ive searched the forums but cant find anything.
As an android newbie im taking my mates advice and not messing about with any ROMs until i have a better understanding.
Until then i guess i just wanna 'desense' as much as i can on the stock rom.

Sense is more than just the launcher. Its also apps (like camera, Locations, Watch, Stocks, Weather, Music player), widgets, keyboard, and overall theming done by HTC. Plus the Sense framework is embedded in the ROM itself, so that is why Sense components (like the camera) can't be ported to AOSP ROMs. So that is what is meant by "Sense is still there" if you just replace certain components, or use a different launcher.
By replacing the launcher, you won't have the Sense launcher taking up memory (3rd party launchers are often smaller footprint). But really, this phone is powerful enough memory and CPU wise, that the difference in just replacing the launcher is negligible. On older phones (like my old Desire Z) it made a big difference. And the battery drain by Sense is also going to be negligible compared to things that suck up much more power, such as screen on time, downloading/streaming data, etc. So on this phone, its largely about personal preference.

Cheers for that. Understood.
Also, i had a problem in my first month with data.
So i downloaded My Data Manager.
OS services uses more than 50% of my data. Approx 1mb per hour.
I googled it, i got a lot of different responses.
What is OS services and why is it chewing my data, what do i need to turn off?
Also as i was looking online for answers, WhatsApp had jumped from less than 1mb, to 11.1mb in less than 5 minutes.
I havent used WhatsApp in days. Its not possible to change permissions through the app but i have read that i can download an app to manually change specific app permissions?
Timmaa thanks for the heads up on viper, i came across is before but had asked a friend more knowledgable than myself and he said id be better off to wait for CM?

I used to use CM, but I find viper to be excellent. Actually, it's amazing. It's stable and has an arsenal of tweaks. The best one out there IMHO. But that's just my opinion, and your mate has one too. Unfortunately all you'll find on here is opinions, the best way to know is to flash it for yourself and see what you think as everyone has different needs etc when it comes to what they want from a ROM.
Oh but by the way, ViperXL has Sense 4.1 which is so much faster than the 4.0 on stock ROM. Supposedly uses less battery too. And the updated camera4.5 takes much better photos, they're superb!

My first Android phone was the Tmobile (US) G2, so I got used to the plain vanilla OS. When I got my Sensation 4G in June I was immediately put off by Sense, which in my opinion is inferior. To get closer to the stock feel I use Launcher Pro and this certainly helps, but I still see Sense running in the applications list. If I kill the process it momentarily gets removed from the list but is there again when I next check. I have read that this could be because Sense also controls the dialer and contacts, so my question is if I replace those functions with a 3rd party application will Sense be gone for good?
Just let sense run in the background. It's not using cpu cycles so it wont affect performance or battery much usage at all. And unless you're reluctant to flashing new rom, try this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1204912) out. A new version is supposed to release today which is supposed to be off the hook. And its the closest you can get to stock that I know of so far.

How can you not like Sense, i'm biased as every android phone i've owned has been an android with HTC Sense so I can't live without it, the Launcher pro looks cheap and too basic, you need Sense to add a bit of flare to your phone!

Yes its definitely personal preference. It would take away the shine of having an android phone if you didn't use it. Android is very basic and the "normal" hope screens are boring compared to HTC Sense. Anyway i'm all for sense .

Sense is a cpu/battery hog while its active. On android however, when apps are put into the background, they become inactive.
Now I'm not a developer so I may be wrong. I based this conclusion off this article which leedroid linked to in his rom: http://lifehacker.com/5650894/andro...ed-what-they-do-and-why-you-shouldnt-use-them
In Android, processes and Applications are two different things. An app can stay "running" in the background without any processes eating up your phone's resources. Android keeps the app in its memory so it launches more quickly and returns to its prior state. When your phone runs out of memory, Android will automatically start killing tasks on its own, starting with ones that you haven't used in awhile.
The problem is that Android uses RAM differently than, say, Windows. On Android, having your RAM nearly full is a good thing. It means that when you relaunch an app you've previously opened, the app launches quickly and returns to its previous state. So while Android actually uses RAM efficiently, most users see that their RAM is full and assume that's what's slowing down their phone. In reality, your CPU—which is only used by apps that are actually active—is almost always the bottleneck.

It's slow, it's bloated, takes battery life and has no 'advanced/configurable' features a la CM7 or LauncherPro.
Sense is much much more than the launcher. It's the whole ecosystem on a HTC Android phone. Hopefully when Ice Cream Sandwich hits Google will stop manufacturers putting their own launchers on top of Android, or at least make it an option. I don't mind a few widgets (flip clock) but Sense has gone too far.

I like using LauncherPro in place of Sense because you can add all the eye candy you want (even Sense looking eye-candy) without having to include the whole battery wasting, memory hogging, and gigantic Sense Eco-system.
Based on what appears to be confirmation that Sense is a memory/cpu/battery hog, will running an alternate launcher be sufficient to prevent this or do I need to somehow fully disable it?
Just use your launcher pro. Don't worry about sense, she won't bother you anymore.

Yeah, I had that problem too. I bought my phone yesterday and was up till dawn messing around with it. Launcher pro seems extremely laggy, so much so that sense was a welcome change. LP worked better on my magic!
Yeah well Launcher Pro is pretty much abandoned by the developer. Hasn't been updated once since at least october last year.

So here's the deal. I just bought one, and I'm looking forward to developing for it.
A few questions first:
1. What kinds of roms do you like? and Why. I want to please my user base, as well as pick it.
2. What features are you missing from Sense, MIUI, AOSP, or whatever else the kids are using these days? (this includes things you see on other devices and wish you had on sensation, or things you think of yourselves)
3. What kinds of roms do you think have ABSOLUTELY no point; For example, I think a re-post of CM with a new kernel and a theme built-in is ridiculous... What do you think?
4. What do you prefer about a rom you flash on sensation? if you had to choose between battery and performance, which? if you had to choose between pretty theme/heavy apps or bare-bones cleanliness, which? This kind of relates to q1...
Before I start repeating myself, I'd just like to say that sensation has a bunch of amazing devs going for it, and has a unique look and a terrific user base, and I'm thrilled to be a part of it.
Please leave intelligent responses, to help make your device better!

Ok I will be the first hear. I have only had my Sensation since September 1st so I have not yet flashed a custom ROM to it. I am kind of giving the stock ROM a good trial run first.
I think since so many people, including me, are reporting touch screen issues, especially with pulling the ring up to unlock the device. You should really consider implumenting something that gives you a choice if you want to use the lock screen or not. Maybe a widget or a added choice in the settings to disable the lock screen. Or maybe even a G-Sensor operated lock screen, you know shake the device to unlock it.
I personally like the dialer UI of HTC Sense 3.0 and the text messaging in sense. I do not like the fact that you can not do what I call free scroll through your apps in the app tray. You have to scroll inn predefined blocks of 20 apps at a time. I personally like a bear bones ROM with a lot of downloadable add ons that you can install if you want. That way you can truly customize your device to suit you and you needs and likes.
I also think you should add a percentage meter that can be put in the status bar at the top cause the stock ROM does not have that option. I really like being able to see my battery percentage not just a battery with a green bar.
Also I miss the CyanogenMod settings in settings that I used in the Hyperdroid-CM7-v2.1.0 -HeadyHoneybadger ROM on my HD2.
I really am not to fond of the bottom launcher bar in the stock ROM either. I like the small launcher like the one in the above mentioned ROM so anything like that would be great.
A better music player than the default Android music player would be a plus also.
Last thing I can think of is something that will turn your WiFi off when you leave the WiFi area, say your home WiFi. And maybe even turns it on when you get back in range of your home WiFi network.
If I think of anything else I will post it here in this thread. Hope you get some more responses.
Edit: I forgot to mention, I prefer performance over battery. But not to the point that the battery will not last at least 8 hours
I'd choose a ROM that keeps Sense 3.0, intelligently overclocks the CPU to maximise performance when the phone is awake and being used, and underclocks it when the phone is asleep to maximise battery life. Another biggie for me would be a camera apk that reduces the compression and noise reduction that the stock Sense camera apk uses which cause Sensation photos and videos to lose sharpness. And I'd like Beats from the Sensation SE included too.
Over to you...

It's very tough competition here mate, so good luck to you (no sarcasm).
To make ROM successful you'd have to make it unique or a lot better than others ( very, very hard to achieve) or both together.
Coming from the Mytouch 4g my favorite Roms were the Aosp Roms they are so light and quick with amazing battery. I would love one similar to fuax's aosp rom from the mytouch 4g. Also I'm a fan of better battery since I use my phone for music and internet all day!

I've been debating about this over the weekend since I installed ARHD on my Sensation.
I know CM7 is still on Alpha, but I'm wondering if it's worth switching over the CM7. I used to run CM when I had my Nexus, and it was awesome. I don't know why but Sense is just so appealing to look at and the Eye Candy is just awesome, so I'm kind of debating on whether or not I should make the switch to CM7 or not. Also, how's the battery life on CM7 in Alpha? ARHD is giving me pretty much 10-12hours of usage with everything on and fairly heavy usage.
I was using revolution HD for a while on my sensation. I did the XE with beats 3.6.0 upgrade too, and it was nice... although I wanted to give cm7 a try. I am very impressed... for alpha, it is incredibly stable. Camera is nicer, it's nearly instantaneous (where revolution still had a 1-2 second delay between launch and home) boot is faster, battery is better... all sorts of neat things.
Basically you're going to be giving up your Camera, HTC keyboard, Video Recording, Sense Dialer. I tried it and went back to LeeDROiD, because I couldn't handle the camera and missed the keyboard.

Cm7 alpha 7 as the option to launch up to 4 apps from the lockscreen... That's why we love cm nightly... Updated every night! And we're not even in the official nightly yet
Hi my name is DloBrown and Im A nightly addict who've been sober for too long!!!
There might be too many bugs in CM7 at the moment for me to just jump on to it. How easy is it to keep updating nightlies? Will all my apps stay from each update to update? Helping with the alpha and providing issues may be something that would make me switch over.
using CM7 alpha 7 right now. Loving it. The only thing I missed was the lock screen and alpha 7 has a similar one to sense, so i'm good now. 1080p recording still not active but will be. Also
one other thing I miss about sense was the face book to contacts sync. CM7 can sync them but not as good. I have some contacts under nicknames that sense used to match with my face book friends. But overall I prefer CM7, much smoother and more customizable.

I have Android Revolution 3.60. im on Bell and haven't flashed the recommended radio. Im scared to do so, as my other phone- moto dext would overwrite my existing radio with tmob's if i updated it. Im used to flashing roms with no radio. My battery really sucks it drops like mad and have to constantly charge
CM7 all the way, but...
I have been using CM7 for a couple of weeks, and I can say that even in alpha, this rom is great. The bugs are not that significant (at least for me) and it is extremely fast. I am not big in the eye candy thing, so for me I prefer a simpler rom than one with more bells and whistles.
That being said, ARHD is the best Sense rom out there, especially because it was the first one with full access to the dual core processor. Mike1984 has done a great job with the rom, it is extremely stable and the add-ons are nice. I have to be honest and I don't think that there is a camera app that can beat the Sense one. I am talking about basic functions, meaning taking pics and recording video, as there is no 2-3 seconds delay after pressing the shutter button.
I don't think that CM7 is for everybody (not right now), so if you just want your phone to work flawlessly, I will say go with ARHD.
P.S.: I personally don't like MIUI, it is too iphonish for me, but I would agree with another person in this forum, who says that it is the evolution of CM7. I do like the performance of the rom, just not the look of it, I hope that they bring back the app drawer.

U should be all set. I am using this from the 3rd day with custom ROM ( First 2 days used sense & felt like its useless to me).
This method worked like a charm for me with every GB ROM i tried & yes the phone feels wayyyyyy faster and better battery life from my experience. have Fun
Download htc supertool, and just press de-sense

Buy a SG2 or a S-Note.
Still not understand why people buy a Sensation where the Sense interface is an USP and then want to remove Sense......
It is the world upside down.
When you buy a car with an extra package of luxury, after delivery you also take it out and throw it away?
It is simple: before you buy decide you want Sense or not. According to your choice buy a phone with Sense or a brand which hasn't.
No offense by the way

yeah your right other people buy samsung and the want sense on it why they don't they buy htc from the first place i don't get it )
You can take me as an example. I hate the looks of GSII, AMOLED screen doesn't look "right" to me, so I chose Sensation. Sense isn't useful (to me) so I removed most of it (lockscreen is just right for me).
If u don't like sense then why u bought sensation?

Because when I was ready to get a new phone, the only dual core phones available for my carrier were the LG G2X and Sensation. No SGS2 in the US at the time, so hey, I have a Sensation.
I did like Sense at first, but it gets old after a while. No problem. It's easy to remove the widgets and launcher, and since I'm not an AOSP purist, I don't mind using the Sense apps like mail, camera, etc.

I like Sense widgets and apps, they provide great functionality and look nice. What I hate about sense is the launcher and useless 3D effects when switching from desktops or unlocking the phone
What is the main difference between using the no sense script and freezing sense launcher? The. Launcher seems to use all my ram and slow my phone down. No sense leaves me with a much faster phone but no working Lockscreen. Freezing sense desktop leaves me with a much faster phone and a working Lockscreen with caller I'd and answer/reject, incoming txt etc and 200 free on the ram. What does no sense script do other than remove sense desktop and Lockscreen?
Guys no need to flame here. The whole post was not an arguement of what we buy. I bought Sensation because i wanted to. Now i got bored of Sense thats it. I support HTC and not Samsung. I also support BMW not Mercedes. Thank you.

The no-sense script that i mentioned and using, does not remove the lock screen. it keeps all the parts of the sense essential for super smooth operation of the phone& i get around 220-250 free ram available. With launcher pro plus my phone flies
I bought an HTC because it was in my price range and I liked it's ratings. However, I am having horrible battery life and whenever I look to see what is using the battery HTC Sense is always the number one drainer by a LOT so I am wondering if my battery life will improve by removing it? Can it be removed? What will the consequences to removing it be? Thanks in advance.

S-off using ganeshp's guide. Then just flash nosense or an AOSP ROM with an unsecured kernel to get better battery life by using badass governor.

yeah Sense is a battery whore are you using the stock battery or an aftermarket battery? when I first traded to get the Senny, battery life was horrible with the stock battery. bought an Anker and got an extra 3-5 hours. changing kernels and radios will also help with battery life as well, but youll have to be rooted to do all that. Gotta be rooted to remove Sense as well. But if you remove it, you wont be able to use any of the HTC widgets and the Sense launcher(rosie) will be gone (install a different launcher first before removing Sense)
What is the best vanilla rom and what is the best modified sense rom?
I want it to be light (uses a low amount of ram) and more stable/fast than the stock rom that gets shipped with your AT&T HTC One X... with better battery life.
Thanks,
Wir3d
This post is not going to be received well, FYI, but before they lock you down : I'm really enjoying CleanRom Lite. It's definitely more responsive than stock. It's Sense-based. Very stable (based on my experience, more stable than stock even).
I don't think any of them right now are going to affect battery life in any appreciable way.
There is no "best" ROM. The best one, is the one that fit your wants and needs, and those are not the same from person to person.
Also, just browse the forum or do a search. There are already lots of other threads like this.

There's no one answer because roms perform differently on different phones depending on usage and individual configurations. 500 people may love one rom to death, but you may find it doesn't work so hot on your phone. You have to test them out and see what's best for you.
Read the ROM threads, find one that you think looks good to you, flash it. Only way to find out.

This all comes down to personal preference so you'll have to go through and see what works for you, each ROM has pros/cons. I've tried 3 myself and I found that the Nocturnal SE 1.7 gives me a good speed boost and battery life, I'm getting about 22-28hrs total with ~3hrs screen time at 50% brightness.
Thanks guys, I know the rules of the forum very well.. the point of it was to see which one uses the least amount of ram and get some feedback at the same time. I was a HD2 owner for 2 years and was involved in the HD2 forums for as long as I have owned the phone.I just got the the HOX and wanted to get something on it quick..
I don't see a point of injecting every single rom into my phone just to find out which one uses the least amount of ram when I can start a thread and and find out that way and at the same time get some feedback..that is the whole point of a forum like this..to communicate with others that have similar devices and can help you out.. I've checked out the pages for almost every rom but I haven't seen one that clearly states how much ram it uses for example 341 MB/1000MB...
I use the Wcx illuminati series roms , they are screaming fast , stable , and they have a mod version and stock version .. and three kernels to choose from .

I just registered over there to check it out... I don't know man... it doesn't seem like he really cares if anyone flashes his ROM or not. Gotta have 10 posts to even download it, there's no actual changelog, no list of mods, no screenies.... how am I supposed to know if I even want to flash it?

First off... Howdy
Doesn't care? Lol, that's harsh ... I know wild child personally and he's the only guy I know that is awake all hours , every day of the week making updates, tweaks, and roms. And never puts a Rom out that doesn't impress, the 10 post rule was put into place to get rid of those who just didn't want to contribute , 10 posts is a very small price to pay for the time and effort put into the work. You can get 10 just hitting the different forums and helping out , and post #2 usually has the change log. They are there I just checked.

I didn't really mean it like that, not trying to detract from the hard work that Wildchild puts in. I'm sure it's an awesome ROM and I'm sure he works very hard on it. I just can't find any information on it, even on his own site. After a fair amount of searching, I have no clue what features it has, what kind of tweaks have been made, if it's been themed at all, or just how it differs from the stock ROM. I have seen lots of people mention his ROMs and how awesome they are, so I'm quite curious and would love to check it out but no way am I flashing a ROM that I know quite literally nothing about.
Aokp by rohan32 is best vanilla rom out right now...not even close. That is if you don't mind having a non working video camera. It's extremely light (about 140 megs) and very fast when joined with nova launcher. It has mods out the ying Yang too.

Basically his regular ROM is a tweaked stock ROM and retains all of the stock look with a nice increase in speed. The modded ROMs he releases are more themed and stuff. And it will have a tweaks app built for his ROM that will allow all kinds of customizations. Kind of similar to what's in the xi40 ROM. I used his modded ROM on my Vivid and it was rock solid. I would definitely give it a try, they are very solid ROMs. I saw you posting over there earlier.
