What is the best/lightest rom for the HOX - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

What is the best vanilla rom and what is the best modified sense rom?
I want it to be light (uses a low amount of ram) and more stable/fast than the stock rom that gets shipped with your AT&T HTC One X... with better battery life.
Thanks,
Wir3d

This post is not going to be received well, FYI, but before they lock you down : I'm really enjoying CleanRom Lite. It's definitely more responsive than stock. It's Sense-based. Very stable (based on my experience, more stable than stock even).
I don't think any of them right now are going to affect battery life in any appreciable way.

There is no "best" ROM. The best one, is the one that fit your wants and needs, and those are not the same from person to person.
Also, just browse the forum or do a search. There are already lots of other threads like this.

There's no one answer because roms perform differently on different phones depending on usage and individual configurations. 500 people may love one rom to death, but you may find it doesn't work so hot on your phone. You have to test them out and see what's best for you.

Read the ROM threads, find one that you think looks good to you, flash it. Only way to find out.

This all comes down to personal preference so you'll have to go through and see what works for you, each ROM has pros/cons. I've tried 3 myself and I found that the Nocturnal SE 1.7 gives me a good speed boost and battery life, I'm getting about 22-28hrs total with ~3hrs screen time at 50% brightness.

Thanks guys, I know the rules of the forum very well.. the point of it was to see which one uses the least amount of ram and get some feedback at the same time. I was a HD2 owner for 2 years and was involved in the HD2 forums for as long as I have owned the phone.I just got the the HOX and wanted to get something on it quick..
I don't see a point of injecting every single rom into my phone just to find out which one uses the least amount of ram when I can start a thread and and find out that way and at the same time get some feedback..that is the whole point of a forum like this..to communicate with others that have similar devices and can help you out.. I've checked out the pages for almost every rom but I haven't seen one that clearly states how much ram it uses for example 341 MB/1000MB...

I use the Wcx illuminati series roms , they are screaming fast , stable , and they have a mod version and stock version .. and three kernels to choose from .

I just registered over there to check it out... I don't know man... it doesn't seem like he really cares if anyone flashes his ROM or not. Gotta have 10 posts to even download it, there's no actual changelog, no list of mods, no screenies.... how am I supposed to know if I even want to flash it?

First off... Howdy
Doesn't care? Lol, that's harsh ... I know wild child personally and he's the only guy I know that is awake all hours , every day of the week making updates, tweaks, and roms. And never puts a Rom out that doesn't impress, the 10 post rule was put into place to get rid of those who just didn't want to contribute , 10 posts is a very small price to pay for the time and effort put into the work. You can get 10 just hitting the different forums and helping out , and post #2 usually has the change log. They are there I just checked.

I didn't really mean it like that, not trying to detract from the hard work that Wildchild puts in. I'm sure it's an awesome ROM and I'm sure he works very hard on it. I just can't find any information on it, even on his own site. After a fair amount of searching, I have no clue what features it has, what kind of tweaks have been made, if it's been themed at all, or just how it differs from the stock ROM. I have seen lots of people mention his ROMs and how awesome they are, so I'm quite curious and would love to check it out but no way am I flashing a ROM that I know quite literally nothing about.

Aokp by rohan32 is best vanilla rom out right now...not even close. That is if you don't mind having a non working video camera. It's extremely light (about 140 megs) and very fast when joined with nova launcher. It has mods out the ying Yang too.

Basically his regular ROM is a tweaked stock ROM and retains all of the stock look with a nice increase in speed. The modded ROMs he releases are more themed and stuff. And it will have a tweaks app built for his ROM that will allow all kinds of customizations. Kind of similar to what's in the xi40 ROM. I used his modded ROM on my Vivid and it was rock solid. I would definitely give it a try, they are very solid ROMs. I saw you posting over there earlier.

I think that's why too. I don't think XDA wants to link to other devs. That's what that ROM looked like. However I'm flashing to it right now, and after browsing their website for a while it looks pretty safe. They seem more experienced than most devs on XDA and this ROM is available for many devices so it should be pretty stable.
Its Becquerel they include warez in the ROM which are a know issue with UD rom's. These types are prohibited in XDA. Got this info from option94 in the other thread.

Regardless of it using warez its still the fastest rom ive ever used definitely .

Honestly after trying to ROM for about 20 mins, i can only say not bad at all.
I'm sure a lot of ppl here would really like the ROM. i say they should let him post the ROM, its no different from what Jaywan was doing. But its a better Kang job than what Jay would do.
He is giving proper credit now. or atleast i did see Cyanogens name there.

[Q] Are Most Of These ROMs A Waste? What Do You Think?

*I did not make this thread to discredit, discourage or bash any devs, I am simply asking for opinions on a subject that dawned on me recently. Please speak freely and non biasly. Thanks!*
OK guys, here goes. I've been experimenting with alotta ROMs lately, mostly ICS. In time I've realized that we never have the features that we paid for, mainly 1080p recording. If the phone doesn't oporate the way we paid for it to (And I paid full price) then is it not a waste to flash the ROM?
I love the speed and battery efficiency I get from the devs and I'm blown away by the amount that they've accomplished, but I've been recently contemplating falling back to stock simply because I'll have the awesome camera. I'd even settle for a top notch Sensation ROM. I know this sounds like a complainer thread, but I've been really losing morale with this device. It seems there will be no more hard KB devices so I might defect to a One S or wait for a One S equivalent from T-mobile. What do you guys think?
I will never give up my keyboard. You leave if you like. And these custom roms are supposed to give our phone something it would've never had otherwise. A functioning ICS rom. If you can't live without everything working, then you should stick to stock or stock tweaked. (I can't use 1080p even if it was working. Don't have a fast enough card )
Rom building and compiling takes a lot of time and effort, not to mention skill.
Essentially, these fine devs are doing the work HTC and T-Mobile were never going to do. Lazy greedy scum they are

I personally don't think that it's a waste to flash these ROMs. Mainly because IMO (aside from 1080p recording) we're really getting more than what we paid for if you think about it. All the features that are available with ICS alone would have made this device more expensive to begin with off the shelf. Then add features of CM9 that these devs are cooking into the ICS ROMs or the features of Sense/ICS ROMs combined together...I think we it's a great thing what's been accomplished.
If 1080p recordning is the main thing you really want then I'd follow the previous suggestion and flash stock or go with a modded stock ROM. There will be no defecting for me. I love physical keyboards! I use mine daily in one way or another.
Even if it comes to the point that nothing on this device is supported anymore I will have this phone lol. We have enough to be used as DDs. So all in all for me, I don't think these ROMs are a waste to flash/use.

This is why I use Bulletproof. It has everything we paid for, and is much more stable and optimized than the stock rom. I would love to have an ICS rom, but I want everything to work on my phone. This is my choice. I am happy with using a GB rom, because my phone does everything I want it to. If it isn't broke don't fix it.

I'm sorta in the same boat as OP. I've flashed everything and found camera limitations with all of them, so I'm really waiting a 1080p fix with flawless camera otherwise before I go back to ICS. I really love how far everything has come this year in terms of development and it's much appreciated, but I don't plan on going back to an ICS ROM without a fully functioning camera. I have an 19 month year old son and just can't risk it!
My dream is ICS with Sense, but even just for a nice camera fix, I think I'd be okay without Sense.
Running Mik in the meantime. Bulletproof was nice except for the green tint to everything.
Hoping for a camera fix soon. Wallet will be opened then!

I am in north carolina, my dev computer is in pennsylvania. I bought yogi's doubleshot, he doesn't have one anymore.
I don't know what I have, but whatever it is it's hundreds of miles away and wholly unavailable.
If you want to host the UV kernels, they were made by yogi, but I'm sure it'll be okay - only issue is no sources, so...?
If it's kosher to link them up here, then feel free to host them and make a thread for it if you want, I have no issue with it, if it'll help someone that's what's important.
Just make sure to credit yogi, and make sure to be explicit about no support from the authors. I'm not quite in a position to do so yet with my new job, still absorbing a lot of data and training, so my brain and body are worn and exhausted after my shift ends in the morning.
I'll bring this to yogi's attention, or at least ask about it, but I don't see an issue with sharing it, provided the two requests I made above are filled.
Sent from a digital distance.
Oh, not gonna quote the whole OP yet again in the thread on page 1... But...
Op - if you feel something is lacking, you are in the place to give you the best shot at figuring out how to make it do what you want.
As far as getting all the features you paid for, well, you paid htc or tmobile, or a little of both, or you bought it secondhand, but the money was originally collected by one or both of those entities. If you use the software they provide, then you get what you paid for.
Using an alternate software version, like what you find here, actually gives you much more then what you paid for it - for you paid nothing, and got a whole lot in return.
You can jump in and help the active devs solve problems, or wait until they do, but the argument about getting whatever value you invested real money into evaporates the moment you flash any non-stock OS.

To be fair, I never used this feature before I flashed CM9, and I continue to not need it. Cameras, to me, are just a bonus. I just want a faster phone with better battery life.

Benefits to desensing?

I asked this in a rom thread but I think this is a better place for it. What are the benefits to desensing? Is it just a personal preference or does it give other benefits?

Its all preference. However you may find some of the sense apps more to your liking. Such as the camera, email, and SMS. You can download Cleanrom DE. It is a desensed ROM. Basically and Aosp look with the sense apps.
Several roms have the option to desense I was just curious if there was other benefits such as better battery life or if removing sense which is known to be somewhat of a resource hog would give a better multitasking experience.
I like sense, but wouldn't want to give up a longer battery life for it.

I get about the same battery life on stock and aokp 1.3
In excited to try viperxl this weekend though
Sent from the abstraction layer.
I am using the viper xl rom right now. It has a few small glitches but it's without a doubt the best xl rom out there right now.

YMMV, but CleanROM 4.5 DE definitely has slightly better performance and battery life than CR4.5 and stock because of the debloating/desensing.

I believe it is preference. I go through phases where I love sense but I have also gone through phase where I have gotten bored of it. It really depends on what you wish to use.

Hey guys,
I have an unlocked & rooted One XL on Telstra.
I am using the stock ROM until i have sussed stable custom ROMs.
I however dont like sense, and am using Apex Pro Launcher.
Im finding that unlocking from sleep & even switching between screens and apps it sometimes stutters.
Sense was actually a smoother experience.
Would this be that sense is still underlying in the background?
If so, can it be removed / disabled whilst on stock ROM?
Any tips on getting the UI to operate more smoothly?

Sense has not gone anywhere... It is still there, you're just using a different launcher. There is an option in Apex to "Keep in memory" in the advanced settings that you could try enabling. You could also try a custom rom like RebelROM, CleanROM, Nocturnal Xi40, or Viper XL, all of which offer a "desensing" option to remove a good chunk of sense while keeping the sweet camera working.

Understood. I know sense is still there. Being new to android im still trying to understand the relationships behind these things.
IE; sense is still running / slowing **** down despite not using it as my launcher?
Are there any good tutorials on sense, what it is, what it does?
Ive searched the forums but cant find anything.
As an android newbie im taking my mates advice and not messing about with any ROMs until i have a better understanding.
Until then i guess i just wanna 'desense' as much as i can on the stock rom.

Sense is more than just the launcher. Its also apps (like camera, Locations, Watch, Stocks, Weather, Music player), widgets, keyboard, and overall theming done by HTC. Plus the Sense framework is embedded in the ROM itself, so that is why Sense components (like the camera) can't be ported to AOSP ROMs. So that is what is meant by "Sense is still there" if you just replace certain components, or use a different launcher.
By replacing the launcher, you won't have the Sense launcher taking up memory (3rd party launchers are often smaller footprint). But really, this phone is powerful enough memory and CPU wise, that the difference in just replacing the launcher is negligible. On older phones (like my old Desire Z) it made a big difference. And the battery drain by Sense is also going to be negligible compared to things that suck up much more power, such as screen on time, downloading/streaming data, etc. So on this phone, its largely about personal preference.

Cheers for that. Understood.
Also, i had a problem in my first month with data.
So i downloaded My Data Manager.
OS services uses more than 50% of my data. Approx 1mb per hour.
I googled it, i got a lot of different responses.
What is OS services and why is it chewing my data, what do i need to turn off?
Also as i was looking online for answers, WhatsApp had jumped from less than 1mb, to 11.1mb in less than 5 minutes.
I havent used WhatsApp in days. Its not possible to change permissions through the app but i have read that i can download an app to manually change specific app permissions?
Timmaa thanks for the heads up on viper, i came across is before but had asked a friend more knowledgable than myself and he said id be better off to wait for CM?

I used to use CM, but I find viper to be excellent. Actually, it's amazing. It's stable and has an arsenal of tweaks. The best one out there IMHO. But that's just my opinion, and your mate has one too. Unfortunately all you'll find on here is opinions, the best way to know is to flash it for yourself and see what you think as everyone has different needs etc when it comes to what they want from a ROM.
Oh but by the way, ViperXL has Sense 4.1 which is so much faster than the 4.0 on stock ROM. Supposedly uses less battery too. And the updated camera4.5 takes much better photos, they're superb!

Becoming a One X girl soon!

Hello fellow phone nerds!
I am transitioning from Samsung to HTC on Friday! I am so excited to get my One X and tweak it out!! I got a killer deal on it and am so excited! How does everyone like there's? Is there anything I should know about it? What battery life kernel works best for it?
Thanks!
-Jess
A couple things.
Hopefully your new phone hasn't been upgraded already. We can't currently root phones that ship with the latest update or have been updated OTA. Having said that... When you first get your phone on Friday, do NOT update it... dismiss it, cancel the download, postpone it, do whatever you have to until you are comfortable with the procedure on how to root it. That would be extremely unfortunate.
Aside from that, it will take some work on your part but the process of rooting/unlocking is kinda fun for this phone. There is no "all in one toolkit" for this phone. There are various tools you must run, to do various things, to get your phone all setup as the ROM flashing beast you want it to be (granted, its only once, but still). What else.. what else...
P.S. Congrats on the new phone! The community here is much closer nit and nicer (IMHO) than most on XDA..
What phone are you replacing?

I have to admit after 2 years of TouchWiz, sense isn't as bad as I remember ... on a tweaked basis. I prefer a fully functional sense based ROM (Venom because its the only one I saw with notification toggles the way AOKP or TouchWiz does it) vs AOKP with issues. I still use Nova because the Sense Widgets aren't worth being stuck on a 4*4 layout, to me.
Just my $0.02

coming from Motoblur on the original Atrix on AT&T.. Sense is pretty awesome. Motorola really screwed up with the way the made Motoblur in my opinion, i hated it.
As far as battery life, on the Nocturnal Special Edition ROM and ViperXL, I usually get awesome battery life, no custom kernels or anything. I do however, use Root Explorer or TitaniumBackup and remove EVERYTHING that I don't use, like, completely uninstall. i mean, EVERYTHING, like 80% of the sense stuff i remove, widgets, social networking plugins, GOOGLE MAPS i only install when i need it, FACEBOOK, i just use the browser, i like to think of it as flashing my "naked version" of these guys' awesome ROMs
On AOSP ROMs, like AOKP and CM10, I get pretty decent battery as well, but as always, it generally depends on your setup.
The Sense camera is AWESOME. the AOSP camera still needs a bit of tweaking, but has most definitely come a LONG way. i'd say that AOKP 2 that rohan is porting for us is the most solid AOSP we've got going on. I tried the latest MIUI (2.9.14) today, and it still seems very buggy (LOTs of FC's, very, VERY laggy, etc.) but the 4.1.1 JB based MIUI is still very very new

Now I have a mint, white, rooted One X on the way and my sick Rock Quicksand case. I'm psyched!

Hey congrats and welcome to the crazy One X/XL community.
Hey guys, since I am in the same situation I'll hijack this thread a bit and ask my questions, too.
I am moving from VZW Rezound to the white AT&T Evita (can't bring myself to call it a "HOX") and am hoping I'll get a 1.85 version.
After having lurked here for about a week, my question is whether or not Google Wireless Tether app will work properly on this phone, after/if I root it. The threads weren't clear on this, and I know that the dev ROMs use it, apparently without issue.
I will also attempt to create a janky USB host solution to carrying my most needed music - I commute and I love Google Music, but it doesn't work well in the subway. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Can't wait to get this phone and looking forward to seeing how s-off plays out.

I've also tried other phones and in my very own opinion my OneX spanks any other phone that's near. In speed, looks, camera, screen and battery life. You made an awesome choice, welcome! I'll give you a quick answer. Foxfi works much better. I've unlocked the full tether options in my roms and I'm sure other developers have done the same. If you want a good Rom, stay away from the att based ones. Pure junk and full of hidden.bloat. and I'm not talking about apps. And I call the phone a One X too, not a fan of the hox name lol. As already pointed out, there is no "toolkit" for the One X.
But everything you need can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237
Is the phone the AT&T branded version? If you receive the phone with AT&T's 2.20 firmware, you're stuck without root (at least for now).
Otherwise, root tools can be found in the index. Then for installing custom ROMs, kernels, radios, etc. the process is to get SuperCID, unlock bootloader and install TWRP recovery.

HTC The perfect ROM

What would be the best ROM for like tweaking / customization (themes skins and all that)
I updated my stock to JB before rooted so i need something to work with that!
Any thoughts would be appreciated

a stupid lazy question...can you not look in the op of each Rom and determine which one is best for you... ? Come on buddy I know you're better than that
Asking which is the best Rom,
or when will an update be ready,
are grounds for getting roughed up in forums as they're against the rules.

Including all of the above answers, personally I think Viper Xl 3.1.0, I mean no offense to other Devs and their roms, really they all do a great work considering it is free. However, Turge's and Viper team roms, rocks like King Kong on a free banana market, I mean dude, this thing is like Pimp my Cell phone, I am glad to donate whenever I can to Devs, and basically it comes down to, you try all the roms available to you, then you choose one, your reasons ( dont forget to check viper xl though), meanwhile you thank all the devs whose roms you tried, maybe a donation would not hurt, but never ever ever, put a rom down, no matter how bad it is. Dude, it is a free gift, so treat it like one. Anyway, i can not wait to fill my quota of 10 posts so I can join the devs forums and share my gratitude there, so whoever does not like what you just read, well guess what, thank you for your time.

It is easier than you think. Ok here is what I do, use the app goomanager to reboot to twrp recovery, back my Rom in case something funky happens, however got to warn you going from ics to jb will change kernel and other settings so personally even when I backed up I could not downgrade from jb to ics, never the less jb rocks big time, so just make sure you use an app to back up your sms prior to twrp recovery, unless you do not want to save your old sms, now once you have backed up all these, you usb mount your phone which. Basically turns your phone into a well usb memory card, then place your chosen already downloaded Rom, dnt forget turge's viper Rom 3.1.0 it is pretty bad ads and it comes with tweaks and what not but you can flash whatver you want as long as it is not international Rom, then you unmount go to install and follow the procedure, this is what people will call dirty flash or install or wtv, it doesn't matter. What this means you might run into a problem called being stuck in bootloop or smth, dnt worry happened to me many times, if you have backed up all your photos and your music you could wipe everything in your system and do factory wipe, personally I wiped even the ad card since I didn't care for back ups and preinstalled apps , but ihad saved music photo and sms, and installed it pure, runs like a charm, it might restart a coupleof times the first time but then booya , let magic happen, ill go find the link for you and you can pm me if you need more help, there is no such a thing as stupid questions, as long as you are carefull you don't offend any of the Experienced users or devs, some people take stuff personally, so good luck, ill post the link next

@op as stated the moderation team generally dislike best rom threads because what may be a great rom for one person may not be the same for others. They're to many variables to say one rom is hands down the BEST rom. Last a lot of times these threads turn into flame wars between fan boys of different devs.
