"Official Response" from Asus about Screen Flex, clicking - Asus Transformer TF700

I'vd had my TF700 for about 2 weeks now. When I first got it, there was little to none screen edge clicking. But now, entire top edge of the screen clicks when I gently press it. I am not pressing it hard at all to make the screen click. I have no other issues with the infinity. I thought about returning it for a new one, but I've read so many other defects such as no update issue, light bleeds, dead pixels, etc. So I called Asus customer service and explained the situation. They said it was normal for gorilla glass to have a little "flex" and make a sound. But they also said that if the screen was separating, then I should return it.
Now, I read couple of threads about this issue, but I don't know whether I have the flex problem or the screen separation issue.
Should I return it?

Absolutely, mine has no problem at all, return it to the dealer and ask for a replacement...that is what I will do..

Well if Asus is telling you to return a problematic tab...then I guess maybe that might be the thing to do.
I'm hoping I can get a second refurbed Infinity in the coming weeks for cheap-o...

Unfortunately, I imported mine from the us so a return is pretty unlikely, plus, its unlocked.

I too have the clicking, and it does not dock. no connection is made

I too had the clicking sound, on the right side of my screen, right above the speaker. It was not very loud, but it was noticeable. The lower right corner had some give to it when I pushed down on it as well. This in combination with the light bleed on the right edge of my screen and a lighter patch that would appear on the left side during boot up made me exchange my table with amazon. My new tablet has none of the clicking issues with the screen, and feels more solid, the light bleed on the right side of the screen is just about the same, but the light patch on the left is gone. Granted, the light bleed is only noticeable during boot up, so I'm not worried about that as much.

Anyone elses touchscreen go crazy?

So after updating to .30 yesterday, my touchscreen went crazy today. When the keyboard is up and I hold delete, you can watch the thing go nuts. Random taps and swipes register all over. This happens all the time, not just when the keyboard is up. I ended up doing a factory reset, and at least that fixed it, just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.
Only other time I've ever seen this happen was on a Nook Tablet when the battery was low. The screen spazzed out. I think it had something to do with sole power consumption issues but I dunno.

Actually my tab is doing the same thing. I has happened to me 3 times now and i am wondering if i got a defective unit.
Could be a real greasy screen. Get out the windex. Worked for me when I had those issues and cleared it right up.

Windex??!!!
I have seen my screen register random swipes. Settings menu goes up and suddenly it switches to performance mode. I though it might be the case pressing on the screens outside edge but now Ill pay more attention. And no my screen is never greasy. I've rented some discs from redbox that looked like someone used them as a dinner plate, but that's not me!
LOL Windex? Yeah, probly not a good idea. Inside your box to the transformer, should be a little black microfiber cloth inside of plastic that came with the unit. If you threw this out, then I would go down to the store and buy a little microfiber cloth that is used to clean glasses/sunglasses. They are probably no more than $5.
Lol, it's glass. I didn't say dunk your machine in in a vat of windex and use brillo pads to scrub the surface then stick it in a blender. You just mist a bit on and use a microfiber cloth to wipe it off. I doesn't hurt it one bit.

So my crazy touch screen issue is back. It happens randomly, but especially after playing six guns for a while. Once it starts if I exit the game and go to a sketching app, it stays crazy for a minute or two and then steadies back out. Still really annoying though. I will add that this never happened before i updated to .30. Not sure if that has anything to do with it though.

Mine did it after the .29 update. It was just a fluke of timing. Had to send it back and asus repaired it after they attempted to troubleshoot it.
Mine too - also had glitch on screen (can be seen in thread show us your desktop) and camera would go nuts when switching between stills to vide, random reboots (before and after firmware update). Returned it (after only two days) and got a new one a week later. If I hadn't gotten a screenie of the glitch they probably wouldn't have given me a new one. Now though the new unit is definitely slower- without a doubt. Overclocked to compensate.
Windex/Alcohol/Ammonia
The three items listed in my title should never be used on a capacative touch screen device. I used windex for years & the result was an (eventually) inoperative htc EVO. The properties underlying the function of a capacitive touch device can & will be degraded over time with repeated use of dry solvents on these types of screens. Yes, it is glass, but there is often also a micronic proprietary layer on these screens (anti-reflective & sunllight resistant) that can be degraded. Monster & other companies make cleaners that are not alcohol-based specifically designed for touch-capacitive screens. they are worth the small investment. If U love your devices, spend a few (just a few) bucks & get the proper cleaner.

Strange Line on the Screen

Not sure how to explain the problem and if I had a better camera I would take a picture to illustrate.
I've had my TF700 for about 3 days now and just noticed a 1 pixel wide line that is about 1.5 inches long, running horizontally about 1/3 of the way down from the top when holding the tablet with the ASUS logo on the top and is right smack-dab in the center. The line appears on every application so I'm guessing it is a hardware issue. The line is most noticeable when the screen is displaying a white background. Yet, all the colors are displayed correctly. I can even see the line when the power is off and I'm holding the screen at the right angle in the light. I do have a Zagg screen protector on the tablet but I don't want to take it off to see if that is problem.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else has the same problem and should I get the tablet replaced?
Ok there are some pictures that I took hopefully the line is apparent on them.
Anyone else experiencing this? (note the redbox is not the problem, but where the problem is located.)
That would drive me crazy - I would definitely return for a new one or RMA (depending on how long ago you purchased it)... That is *not* normal....

I've JUST got this, down the left side on my 2 day old tab. I believe it is because my screen is seated badly and probably has been the insides somehow. Contacted amazon.de they will replace it as they have stock now.

As I examine the screen closer, I'm seeing a bunch of these lines. Sucks big time. Well it's going back.

Little bit more give in upper left corner of screen.

Are all infinitys like that? Mine feels a bit more squishy at the top of the left edge of the panel in landscape. Nothing major, no clicking or anything. There just seems to be a bit more give in the area. Strange thing is, the Prime I traded in to get the infinity had the same issue in the exact same spot. Anyone else notice this on their tablet. It's not preventing me from enjoying me tablet and doesn't boether me, just wondering if it's normal.
My infinity has a little more give on the left side of the screen. It's quite annoying actually. When I spend several hundred euros for a product I expect it to have good build quality. Thinking of trading the unit, but I don't think my retailer will allow me to do so.
I agree but it really isn't something you feel unless intentionally pushing that spot pretty firmly. I've got a feeling it may have something to do with all the jacks and ports on the left side of the tablet. Maybe it's the same for everyone.

You're probably right. While I notice mine has some flex in six places - center of each side and two top and bottom, one on either side of the rear camera and docking connector - which I assume to be the points between the mounting clips, the worst place is right next to the microSD slot.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using Tapatalk 2
Yes I think mine is worse too near the sd slot. I wonder if retailers will accept it as RMA or something, but then again I am not sure if I want to lose my tablet for a few days over such a minor issue.
I suggest to let the issue go if it is your only issue. I'm totally ok with it. I'm on my 3rd infinity, 1st one had a lot of light bleed, 2nd one had a noisy vibrator which was really annoying, 3rd one has no bleed and no other issue other than this screen flex on one side. Even if playing a driving gyroscope game I wouldn't feel the flex unless I were gripping very tightly. The worst part about it is that I know it's there, otherwise it doesn't affect my experience with the tablet. Just curious as to whether it's normal or common, seems it may be.

How many times have you exchanged your Infinity?

Topic.
1: Volume rocker did not work properly.
2: Many scratches on the backplate.
3: loose screen causing clicking noise.
Twice.
#1 - Wifi died after a week.
#2 - Screen was completely detached on one side out of the box.
Almost returned my third since it looked like the spring was missing from my SD card slot (that is, the card went in with no resistance and wouldn't push in to pop out)... but on a whim I decided to try it again right before I finished boxing it back up and it started working.
Its a great tablet, but Asus really needs to improve their quality control.
ZROW
Returned mine no times...
Thought about it-didn't do it.
0 cakes out of infinity
did not return my tablet, was flawless unit
Did the Infinity even come with plastic covers for the keyboard dock connections and the charging port like the TF201 model? The Infinity I saw, brand new right out of the box there were no plastic protective covers at all.

All three of mine had the cover on the dock connector itself, but not the two slots where it connected to the dock.
Edit: Sigh... Now I"m considering returning mine for the third time. When I got it, I noticed the screen could be pushed in a little along the bottom, like it wasnt completely attached but I figured it'd be ok since it was just one spot. Now its doing it along the top. My local best buy has them in-store now so I could exchange it no problems, but I've been holding off during my return period before unlocking and I dont want to push that back again...
I heard you can get banned for 90 days from Best Buy if you return too much... They scan your driver's license to keep a log of your returns. Not sure if it applies to defective tablets but they will probably assume that you're doing the damage one day. Anyways, time to exchange it.
Zero. Slight clicking sound. GPS is a bit slow. Nothing else.
4: Loose screen, clicking noise
5: Loose screen, clicking noise
6: Loose screen, clicking noise
7: 5 pieces of dust under screen.
This is outrageous.
Vibrating Motor didn't work at all.
This one is perfect. Everything works great. No creeking of the screen, no light bleed no problems what so ever. For now.
4 times....... 1- had dust under screen, 2- dead pixels, 3-dust under screen 4-dead pixels again, and the one I currently have seems like a keeper, I am used to it already as I had to do the same for the Prime and tf300 at least twice, but once I got a good one it held up good, Im very satisfied with the one I currently have. the infinity is clearly a beast!
8: dusts under screen
Finally got a good one on my ninth... everything is good except for the minor lightbleed but IDC I have found THE ONE!

I live between two BB stores that are under 3 miles away.
I work in the city where two BB stores are less than 1 mile away so I can walk.
I also open the box in the store after exchanging and check for problems. If I do, I exchange it again. Started this after my fourth exchange cause I was getting annoyed driving back and forth.
wow. I feel lucky. I got mine first week available in North America and have NO issues. no dust, no light bleed. Been working great. No complaints, except with Chome being a big laggy.
Zero.
Original TF101 - 7 TIMES. Yup..dead pixels, blemishes on screen, dead WIFI, crappy QA until I got a good one.
TF201 - Twice. Dead pixels, dead GPS. End of romance.
TF700 - Returned once. Original one had cosmetic imperfections (large dark stain/spot on the side), loose screen and clicking on left side of screen. Picked up another one, PERFECTION. No dead pixels, no clicking, no cosmetic damage.
Zero. No problems in 3 weeks.

Really This is shocking to hear. I bought mine online from america, because I couldnt buy the cheaper speced version here. But mine is perfect thank god. I do actually have a very slight clicky sound in one of the corners. But I'll live with that. I don't really know what I could do if this craps out on me.
Asus really need to work on their QC...
No returns on my infinity yet, I have had mine for almost 30 days (have 60days for BB returns). Have a 2yr ADH from square trade just incase. Looks like this infinity is a keeper.
My primes on the other hand was just a QC problems after QC problems... very dissapointed with the prime.

The loose/unbonded screen issue...

So, I've just received my third Infinity, after having to send the first two back because of defects with the screen. The first had a large speck of dust trapped right under the centre of the screen, and the screen on the second gave everything a horrible yellow tinge.
The one I've just received has what looks like a perfect screen image wise, but there's a horrible clicking sound when I press along the right hand edge - so, it appears that this infinity also has a fault, which I know from reading these forums is fairly common.
I'm really starting to loose heart with this tablet - it's my first one, and as much as I want to love it, I'm sick of receiving defective units. If I return this one, then I'm going to be running the risk of receiving another with a dodgy screen or worse.
If I decide to keep this one, what are the chances of the clicking/unbonded screen becoming worse? Can anyone who's had this problem comment on whether the area that clicks has expanded over time, or if your screen has started to separate noticeably? Is this likely to happen?
I've bought through Amazon so I'm able to return it without any hassle, but I'm reluctant to go through the ASUS quality control lottery for a fourth time.
I would appreciate any advice or comments.
Mine is 2 months old and i had the clicking issue from the beginning but it didn't got worse and to be honest i don't even notice the clicks anymore (i guess that my brain got used to it ).

Send it back - that's not acceptable for a highend electronic product. You keep doin this until you get one with accaptable build quality or you buy another brand. Choice is yours. But never accept poor build quality in high end consumer electronics
Had mine for about 3 weeks and received a screen protector a couple of days ago, no problems with the screen but was worried applying the screen protector would show up any defects clickingwise. Panic over screen protector on and display is looking good.
Yeah, I think too many people here accept the fact that their unit has some fault and then just think "well, it could be worse. Be happy with what you got". No way! this should be THE high end tablet, one of the most expensive ones there are and then it has this kind of faults.
IF everybody would be same and think "well this is ok" then Asus wouldn't even learn from their mistakes. They would just keep on with the crappy QC and nothing would be fixed. Maybe they would even worsen the qc to save money and try to find out where is the line that people don't accept the product.
For me, I spend a lot of money and I want my unit be perfect out of the package. It is other issue then if I break it..
I too am having some screen issues, but I think I will have to send my unit back to ASUS completely. Most Dutch retailers only have a very short return period, and I've already had mine for 19 days. I guess I will contact the retailer and ask them what I should do. However, it is really unacceptable that you pay a high price for such a premium product and that it has issues that really should not ocur. The reason why I didn't go back to the retailer was because I didn't really notice it at first, it just got more annoying later on...

I'm returning my 2nd TF700t tomorrow 'cause of loose screen. This time it also made the clicking sound :/
Mine has a loose screen but it's the lower left hand corner by the headphone jack, hdmi port, microphone area. You don't even need to squeeze it hard, it feels hollow in that area and it makes a crunching sound. My biggest fear is the ports there are either going to get damaged or cause a short touching the case. Amazon is sending me a replacement which I should have tomorrow.
Amazon was really gracious in taking my 201 back that I bought in May, but man, WTF, I love Tegra games so the samsung tab is out and I hate Samsung with their wishy washy update and the fact they stop supporting their legacy products fairly fast.
If this next one is trash I don't know what to do, I don't want to be banned by Amazon for returns, sucks ass.
Thanks for all the replies and comments - it seems that this loose/unbonded screen issue is more widespread than I first thought...
All those who have said that I shouldn't accept this on a premium device are, of course, correct. Although the tablet seems to work properly now, I'm worried that several months down the line the screen might start to separate or some other related problem will arise, & I'll be left to deal with Asus direct for a warranty repair. It makes far more sense to get it replaced now, so I'm just about to contact Amazon to tell them that this tablet, the third one that they have sent me, is also faulty.
Here's hoping my fourth will be fault free as it'll be the last one I get - if there's a problem with it then it'll be returned for a refund & I'll start to look at other brands of tablets to buy instead.

If you check out the Nexus 7 forum (also an ASUS tablet) you can gleam some interesting information about the screen separation issues. It's not as easy to take the Infinity apart, so fixes aren't readily available, but I'm sure the issues are related.
I wonder if the glass and digitizer on this tablet are stuck down by something similar to double sided foam tape.
Might be a contact film type adhesive too.
My experience with these type of sticky adhesives is that sometimes a little warmth or just over time they will adhere better.
I did have a slight clicking on the bottom of my tablet, it's not there now.
Just some thoughts.

From the ASUS Nexus 7 forums I understand that the loose screen/screen separation may be due to adhesion issues that can be somewhat or completely solved by gentle heat followed by light, consistent pressure. Someone did try that with his Infinity with limited results but I think his frame may not have fit properly as well. The crunching sound some have reported may be due to a really crunchy type of tape used to hold down the battery, if there's any excess flex that causes the screen/digitizer to touch the tape. There was also a screen lift/light bleed issue caused by over-tightened screws in the frame holding the motherboard, etc together. That was user fixable, by just loosening the screws and making sure that they were all fairly evenly tightened. That also really helped with the light bleed issues too.
I received my replacement from Amazon, this one is all good, it even has the cooler color screen I like compared to original, sweet!
I have just sent back my second tablet to amazon after receiving the first one with nearly jammed in buttons and a clicking screen. The second one I got had a little clicking to start and then got progressively worse until I chose to return it. Amazon emailed me and said that they are just going to refund me my money instead of sending out another one with probably similar problems... don't really know what to do now... any other good tablets coming out? Haha

The way these tablets are held together is via a longer L shaped plastic edge on the faceplate that mates top edge first to a the ledge built into the backshell. Once inserted under the shell at the top edge the rest of the screen can lay down into the rest of the backshell. There are smaller L shaped clips up and down the outsides which click into place via finger pressure. The bottom edge is secured by two metal slide locks which mount the front to the back much like an old style door chain where the round part fits into a large hole and then slides into a narrower opening to latch it into place.
The point of this post? if the sides or top seem loose you can probably click them together with finger pressure. if the bottom is loose the latch got locked without the round part in place. for this you should return if you have warranty left. If it crunches they probably broke an L shaped clip while assembling.
I received my 2nd Infinity today and I immediately noticed the screen on the bottom left hand corner is above the frame and the rest of the bottom part of the screen flexes when I hold it normally. I'm sending it back. I'll give the Infinity one more chance and hope I get a good one. If not, I'll have to look at other options. At some point enough is enough.
My advice for anyone that has build quality issues with their Infinity is to return it. That is a lot of money to spend to keep a tablet that could break down the line. I wouldn't take any chances, but that's just me.
Seriously though, does anyone know of any other top end tabs coming out soon? I'm tired of dealing with sh*t quality
