Porting a ROM from international version? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

So as many know the International version of the s3 has a lot more development than we do here. But my question here is shouldn't it be pretty easy to port them to the VZW version? Its the same phone. And if we switched up to the kexec kernel or something along those lines and flipped a few switches on the structure of some key apks shouldn't it work on vzw?
Sent from my Galaxy S3 using Tapatalk 2

Should yes, easy probably not. Can it be done by some of the Awesome Devs we have around here yes. Will they?? Doesn't hurt to ask.

True. Some MIUI and maybe Gummy would be pretty awesome..

I am waiting on a non buggy MIUI from the International Gs3. I tried porting one from Galaxy nexus but it didnt boot. I will try again soon someday once our RIL gets worked out. Its really weird right now, its based on a GSM stack when our phone is both CDMA and GSM. They are working on a CDMA stack on r.cyanogenmod.com, and once that gets fully approved I will work on this project.

It is possible. Entropy did this for the AT&T sgs2 so we could flash anything in the dev forums. The only issue was both sgs2 had the same hardware for the most part except for the buttons. In our case it is different; we have completely different processors. They have a quad core eynkos(lucky *******s) and we have dual core snapdragon. This is just one obstacle of many. The best thing to do would be to go an post in the threads for the Roms that you like in the i9300 forums and ask the dev to port it to our phones. You may not get a response but the more people that ask the chances are better the we will see them port some of those Roms. The best rom over there in my opinion is omega rom. Believe it or not they are listening. That how we go some many ports on the sgs2

[Q] Will Skyrocket be able to use the official T-Mobile SGS II ICS update? [Solved]

Noticed that the T-Mobile SGS II is getting it's ICS update today. Considering both the phones are pretty much the same inside, can the T-Mobile ICS rom be able to be ported to our device the Skyrocket?
I'm sure the answer is yes.

Hope it's not really 4.0.3, given our last leak was 4.0.4.
Yeah. I saw that too. But once we have kernel source all SHOULD be well.

But an official 4.0.3 with all features working will do until our official 4.0.4 is released. At least for me.

I've been on a home brew UCLE2 based rom since it dropped and have been pretty happy with it. Only wish battery life was a bit better, but power save mode seems to make a big difference with that.
Its touchwiz. Don't know why everyone is hyped other than the kernel source being available.

Wouldn't it be amazing if AT&T blessed our ICS with TW UX? That would do some serious brand strengthening. Too bad it is very unlikely.

Were either of you expecting something else? If you thought it was going to be stock ICS then you're either on the wrong board or purchased the wrong phone.
It gets really old reading all of this whining about Touchwiz. This is the SKYROCKET forums. It comes with Touchwiz, always has and always will. Frankly if you two hate it so much why in the world did either of you purchase this phone?
Some of us are quite happy with Touchwiz and are excited to finally be seeing a complete and fully functioning ICS rom that could run on our phones.
First off I knew it would have touchwiz I'm not an idiot don't treat me like one. You have your oppinion and I have mine the only exciting thing for me is source the rest of it for me is just an update

So even though you knew it had Touchwiz you purchased the phone anyway. That's great. Now we all know how much you hate it. Thanks for sharing this completely unneeded opinion.
I would like to ask, what exactly does this opinion have to do with the topic of this thread? As frankly it appears as if you just wanted to inject your negativity for no reason other than to rain on the parade of those that are excited about the update and are happy with their purchase of a Touchwiz skinned device.

Hopefully this will help development for our phone in a 4.1 sense.
Same here. I would love to see a JB port for the Blaze.
It'll be easier to get a port once we have ICS. If Samsung releases it anytime this century... I am still confused for why Cyanogen Mod doesn't support our phone but still supports single core phones lol

That's what I'm thinking. It's more about popularity than actually good hardware. Funny thing is that if CM10 or at least CM9 were available more people would buy this phone. A bunch of people jumped ship and returned this device after looking at the 'slow' development. As of now it's picking up and hope it gets even better. Coming from a G2x, which was a huge waste of potential hardware, I hope this device doesn't meet the same fate. The only reason I didn't buy the Galaxy Nexus was because of its weird hardware (bad camera, random reboots, etc.) Lol

Be patient. As soon as Samsung releases ICS kernel open source for Galaxy S Blaze 4G, we will have more custom ROMs such as CM9 and CM10.

Should I get the Atrix 2?

Based on feature set, availability and price my reasearch has led me to this phone with the RAZR as a second choice(pentile screen, waker battery, no FM). The RAZR has better development though(incl kexec). I'm hoping to run ICS as a daily driver in the very near future and JB/CM10 down the line. What do you think?
Price-wise it's the best phone you can get. I myself owned a HTC magic and then a nexus one and can confirm that the build quality is solid. Webtop is also a great feature.
Rom-wise we've stock/modded ICS and soon ported CM10. But don't expect to unlock the bootloader. If you can live with it, buy it

Keep in mind, this is one persons opinion, but personally, I love this phone. We have 2 ICS Leaks, and CM10 is right around the corner.
It's mainly your preference, but i'd say just to be sure you want this phone, read all that you can from this forum.

Bootmenu is great man. With it, you can essentially dual boot so to speak. Check the thread out, it tells you ALMOST everything you need to know. Something's you can read around the forums and find answers to. I've become pretty familiar with it, so if you have any specific questions feel free to ask me.
Also others are here to help too

Oh, BTW, threw a couple thanks to you 2 for great advice to the new people. Way to go!
If you can live with a locked bootloader I don't see why not, the specs are decent, screen size is pretty good and overall quality is nice. We have ICS (leak), a few custom roms, and CM10 is being worked on (I believe camera isn't working just yet). Mine is currently softbricked because I got into a bootloop and my battery is low , but that's easy to fix once I can charge the battery, which I'm being patient with and not doing anything risky and potentially harmful to the battery or phone. In conclusion, if the price is right, it's a pretty decent phone, with a locked bootloader (Always a catch)
Hmm. How about making a bounty or making a collection for a donor device to a dev? Just thinking out loud...
The only feature I'm missing that a custom kernel might solve is 2-way call recording. I think...

You won't be disappointed. This is only the second phone I've owned in 16 years that I haven't wanted to destroy after a couple months of use.
Is the lack of support from Motorola annoying? Sure, but the amount of support from the developers and everyone in this community is all you will need. Whether you stay on Gingerbread or upgrade to the ICS leak, there are plenty of amazing ROMS and mods to play with.
Just make sure you read through the forums (especially the stickies) and familiarize yourself with phone and the community.

[Q] What phone currently has the most development?

I'm sort of new to Android and I currently have a lg vs910. I love the phone my only problem with it is there are only a couple of custom roms running on it. Don't get me wrong I love the broken out 2.0.1 and mtmichaelson did a great job. But I'm almost due for an upgrade and I want a good phone that has a few more options for custom roms. I know this question is sort of opinion based but that's what I want please let me know you're opinions.

I had previously had a Motorola Droid X and HTC Thunderbolt and neither of them could come close to the number of choices and fast updates that I have been able to get with my Galaxy S3. Its amazing when you consider the Verizon model shipped with a locked boot loader. I had Jelly Bean on my S3 before the VZW Nexus got the update officially. Plus the hardware is great!

I would say the HTC Evo 4g because it has been around since 2010, and there are still roms being developed for it.
sorry but the galaxy nexus no one considers, in addition to being a great device brings several customizations ... (this is my thought)
I have a samsung galaxy s more than 2 years now. Great device while many, many custom roms available. And they are stable too!
My next device will be a Samsung again. I am in doubt wether it will be S3 or Note.
The galaxy nexus GSM hands down. The Nexus 4 is also going to follow up with the same level of development when it is released

Better screen, higher MP camera, hover stuff that might make it into CM. Otherwise it will be the same software the S3 has.
I love newest/latest/greatest...but I think I will be ok with a RC CM10.1 on the S3 vs. back to nightlies on the S4, at least until my next phone comes out (if a nexus comes to vzw again, or if the moto x-phones look good, i'll jump).
an AOSP camera app that doesn't misfocus all the time.
If the S3 can't hold a decent signal in fringe areas with AOSP after a year or two, I don't have high hopes for the S4 to do any better.

Firstly did you eliminate the fact if it's a ROM issue, a modem driver issue, or the hardware issue? For eg you may want to put on a stock samsung ROM and have a go at the reception comparison.
Secondly, there wasn't any officially built AOSP for the S3.
With the S4, there's gonna be officially built AOSP release that will have all the correct integration with the components

It's a known issue. Samsung never officially released the RIL, so the bastardized versions just don't work as well. If you're in a great 4g area, you'll be fine with AOSP, but handshakes are terrible and reception is lacking. Believe me, I've tried pretty much all the roms with multiple phones. When they work, they work well, but when they don't...terrible. It's sad, really, as I would MUCH prefer non-TW...
