[Q] What phone currently has the most development? - General Questions and Answers

I'm sort of new to Android and I currently have a lg vs910. I love the phone my only problem with it is there are only a couple of custom roms running on it. Don't get me wrong I love the broken out 2.0.1 and mtmichaelson did a great job. But I'm almost due for an upgrade and I want a good phone that has a few more options for custom roms. I know this question is sort of opinion based but that's what I want please let me know you're opinions.

Thank you. I kind of thought that would be most peoples answer but wanted to see If someone would mention a phone I haven't yet heard of. Thank you for the quick response though.

I had previously had a Motorola Droid X and HTC Thunderbolt and neither of them could come close to the number of choices and fast updates that I have been able to get with my Galaxy S3. Its amazing when you consider the Verizon model shipped with a locked boot loader. I had Jelly Bean on my S3 before the VZW Nexus got the update officially. Plus the hardware is great!

I would say the HTC Evo 4g because it has been around since 2010, and there are still roms being developed for it.

sorry but the galaxy nexus no one considers, in addition to being a great device brings several customizations ... (this is my thought)

I have a samsung galaxy s more than 2 years now. Great device while many, many custom roms available. And they are stable too!
My next device will be a Samsung again. I am in doubt wether it will be S3 or Note.

The galaxy nexus GSM hands down. The Nexus 4 is also going to follow up with the same level of development when it is released

Agree what you said. Many forumers tend to REQUEST REQUEST adn REQUEST yet only a few willing to try and give a flash to it.
?
That wasn't a request but a question.
Coming from the epic forums i thought this would be more adult.
Maybe i was wishing for a little too much.
But i digress, anyway i heard of a few people working on it but time will tell.
I am not a developer but will gladly donate the first $20.00 to buy a true Dev a nexus s to get it done.
I also would like an approx rough idea when we can expect Cyanogen stable working for our Nexus-S 4G ?
I heard it will be version 7.1 that has Android 2.3.4 code in it.
Have no idea when that is due? But I NEED Cyanogen on my Nexus, stock just blows and is limited. If CM 7.1 is not by the time the EVO 3D is out I am jumping back to HTC and dumping this Nexus

Getting a Nexus S 4G, any advice?

Hi, all. I currently have an Epic 4G. But it is broken, (mic and phone speaker don't work at all) so I am entitled to a warranty replacement. This was an Asurion replacement so I talked to them. I asked them to give me a Nexus S 4G instead and I got it without too much problem. The rep I was talking to said he couldn't do it but his boss said yes without hesitation (maybe I should have asked for an Epic Touch 4G instead and seen what happened but I digress). If I am lucky the phone will arrive tomorrow but probably the next day.
Anyway, I am hoping that I can get some advice on this phone. How to root it? What Roms/Kernels are the best. Ect.
Thank you very much!
About which roms or kernels are the best, there's not an easy answer to that. Being the developer phones, the nexus line has a lot of people working on the source. This is good and bad, because there are a lot of cool things you can get on your phone, but a lot of stuff will not work. Often times there will be a tradeoff between getting bleeding edge updates and having a stable system.
That being said, NANDroid backup is your best friend. Before every flash, backup your entire phone's state. Then if nothing works, restore your backup and it is like nothing ever happened.
Well to start off, and always a good impression, is to search for the first request. Shouldn't be hard to find a thread about rooting a NS4G or a YouTube video. Just looks better on you.
As far as ROMS go, well Cyanogenmod is a well respected name in that realm. Also you could pick from any of the other hundreds of ICS Roms. Just make sure you get it from the Nexus S "4G" forum.
Dig around in the forums. Shouldn't take long to find a thread with the topics you are asking about.
Good luck and welcome to the Nexus club.

Best ROM hands down is gummy nexus. I promise you, you WILL not find a better ICS ROM for the NS4G. The kernel baked into the ROM is Mathkids 14.5 and works great.

And the is currently a one click root method in the NS4G forums. Check it out.

Unlock boot loader as soon as possible because it will erase everything on your phone including SD card.
As far as ROMs you've gotta use a ICS ROM. There's lot of great GB ROMs but you're not getting a Nexus to be stuck on last year's OS. CM9 Is currently my favorite. Lots of other ROMs have more tweaks like quad and octo locks but CM9 is the smoothest for me. But try em all, why not?
As far as kernels there are a lot of good options. Personally I like Steve Garden's latest. Has the best colors without using Voodoo so there's no annoying green flash when locking. But again, try em all!
Oh... and how to root? Well, it's basically "fastboot oem unlock" "fastboot flash recovery whateverrecoveryyouchoose.img" and flash the SU binary in recovery. Or just flash a ROM.
*if you didn't wipe /system and /boot it is NOT A FULL WIPE* (relax, it's a signature)

Agreed 1millon % that's what I run. Can't find anything better. Rom is super stable and battery life is insanely good.

It is all depend on how much budget you have. If you have a high budget, I would say look at the Galaxy Nexus instead. Otherwise, the normal Nexus S is good enough. There aren't many 4G carrier available, and you won't need 4G in daily life.
I come from an epic. No regrets whatsoever. The only wins the epic has over the ns4g are the better camera, and speaker. Also the epic seems to get better 3g and 4g reception. Other than that everything else is so much better. Development included.

+1 to what rush said. I had to bring my epic in for repairs but they didn't have any refurbs so the sent me a nexus. Check out shabby's one click root and there is also a one click unroot. Qbking has some good videos of various roms also.

Great read! I too am a new comer here, coming from the misfit phone Droid X2, which was a decent phone, but with no unlockable bootloader, will never reach its potential, but we had great devs that made some decent roms with what they had. But anyways I'm really liking this phone so far, & with unlockable bootloader & so many roms, I'm feelin all goody like a fat kid in a candy store! Lol And seems like a good community here

GummyNexus is good, I just don't like the visual changes. I would go with Bigxie's ICS Rom. That, combined with the Matrix 14.5 kernel set to lulzactive is perfect. 9 hours unplugged and I was at 86%.

oICS v43 is good too, but I am thinking of giving gummy another try. I've been hearing that it's doing quite well and oICS hasn't been updated in awhile(although it is reportedly still in development.)
great phone! im coming from a evo 4g and didn't want to use my upgrade so I bought this phone off ebay. Loving it so much. I think I'm stuck on nexus phones from here on out (^_^)
Yeah advice is get an epic touch lol better phone. Better battery. But its not free like the nexus is right now. My advice, get free nexus from sprint online and then just grab the galaxy nexus when it drops later.

Should I get the Atrix 2?

Based on feature set, availability and price my reasearch has led me to this phone with the RAZR as a second choice(pentile screen, waker battery, no FM). The RAZR has better development though(incl kexec). I'm hoping to run ICS as a daily driver in the very near future and JB/CM10 down the line. What do you think?
Price-wise it's the best phone you can get. I myself owned a HTC magic and then a nexus one and can confirm that the build quality is solid. Webtop is also a great feature.
Rom-wise we've stock/modded ICS and soon ported CM10. But don't expect to unlock the bootloader. If you can live with it, buy it

Keep in mind, this is one persons opinion, but personally, I love this phone. We have 2 ICS Leaks, and CM10 is right around the corner.
It's mainly your preference, but i'd say just to be sure you want this phone, read all that you can from this forum.

Bootmenu is great man. With it, you can essentially dual boot so to speak. Check the thread out, it tells you ALMOST everything you need to know. Something's you can read around the forums and find answers to. I've become pretty familiar with it, so if you have any specific questions feel free to ask me.
Also others are here to help too

Thread Move in progress.
Oh, BTW, threw a couple thanks to you 2 for great advice to the new people. Way to go!
If you can live with a locked bootloader I don't see why not, the specs are decent, screen size is pretty good and overall quality is nice. We have ICS (leak), a few custom roms, and CM10 is being worked on (I believe camera isn't working just yet). Mine is currently softbricked because I got into a bootloop and my battery is low , but that's easy to fix once I can charge the battery, which I'm being patient with and not doing anything risky and potentially harmful to the battery or phone. In conclusion, if the price is right, it's a pretty decent phone, with a locked bootloader (Always a catch)
Hmm. How about making a bounty or making a collection for a donor device to a dev? Just thinking out loud...
The only feature I'm missing that a custom kernel might solve is 2-way call recording. I think...

You won't be disappointed. This is only the second phone I've owned in 16 years that I haven't wanted to destroy after a couple months of use.
Is the lack of support from Motorola annoying? Sure, but the amount of support from the developers and everyone in this community is all you will need. Whether you stay on Gingerbread or upgrade to the ICS leak, there are plenty of amazing ROMS and mods to play with.
Just make sure you read through the forums (especially the stickies) and familiarize yourself with phone and the community.

Is it bad to want a Galaxy Nexus?

I have the Galaxy S3 and there is nothing wrong with it but lately I've been wanting to buy a Nexus to use and switch back and forth from. I also been getting the AOSP itch and tons of accessories for the Nexus.

Why would you think its bad? Not everyone likes the same phone, that's why Verizon offers so many different phones to each his own . Good luck with whatever decision you make. I'm sure they are both good phones, you will just have to see for yourself which one is best for you.

It's fine if you want to downgrade. S3 with AOSP is a Samsung Nexus with better hardware. They discontinued the Verizon Nexus cause they all came back and ended up giving S3s for replacements. If talking LG Nexus that's a different story.
I prefer the AOSP look and feel but I have the GS3 .. I installed CM10 and then added mods to show the Nexus style nav bar, works great now. Basically have a Galaxy Nexus system running on the Galaxy S3 hardware. Best of both worlds!
Hey man don't let anyone tell you what phone YOU should use..
I had the HTC DNA, and I traded it for this SG3 black.
I love this phone and am very happy I made the switch even though most think that it was a crazy decision,, but as long as I am happy that is all that matters.
Plus if the HTC M7 makes its way to VZW, I'll be grabbing that
My wife ended up convincing me to let her get the Nexus instead of the S3 because she doesn't like TouchWiz, even though the hardware is better in the S3. I've never seen her more happy with a smartphone! Plus she's now got it rooted and running CM, and she brags all the time to her friends about how awesome it is. I however like TW, and run GalaxyMod at the moment (I'm always switching cuz they're all awesome in some way). So, just weigh the pros and cons of what you like then go for it dude!

granted if the HTC M7 comes to VZW I'll be getting that.

No, it's not bad to want one. I loved that phone until I saw how amazing the s3 was. Battery life was absolutely atrocious and I couldn't stand it, I love not having to worry so much about my battery when heading out. I would definitely prefer AOSP over touch wiz though.

Both phones are really good an both running jelly bean. I'm sure as the user said above, the sgs3 has more development being the more popular phone. But that's irrelevant if you don't plan on rooting and modding your phone.
Best bet is to play with them in hand. Both offer similar performance which hardware difference such as screen size, navigation keys vs hardware keys, etc. I can't always use my sgs3 with just one hand. Depends what I'm doing. My gf has the RAZR m and everything can be done one hand.
IMO, the sgs3 is the better device. Bigger screen, and camera. But the form factor and edge to edge screen of the RAZR m is awesome once you pick it up.

I hate the Motorola phones but I have to admit as phones you can have a clear phone call and not drop the call. The S3 even after the JB update still has issues. Not everyone has that problem but if you read the forums, certainly enough do that you might want to consider it.
P3droid has one, if it can be hacked, he's the guy to do it. He's been kinda quiet lately about it. Maybe he's done. Give him a follow on Twitter.

Motorola phones are not so great if you like to root & flash roms. I came from a Razr Maxx. I know this. And the Photon on Sprint can't even function fully if you unlock the boot loader. It's ridiculous with Motorola phone's.
If you want a smaller phone and a UI that's close to stock Android, go with the Razr M. If you want a phone that has better features, more user friendly functions, great camera, good wireless radio, and good development, go with the S3.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I wouldn't touch a Motorola phone with a ten foot pole.
i will admit, that, while i love my S3 and would NOT trade it for my wife's RazrM, i do get jelous sometimes with her better reception. IN the same exact place, she has a better chance of hooking up with a weak reception than i am. HOWEVER, i do love all the DEV support the S3 has, all the tweaks and various hacks on it. SO would still pick the S3 over the Razr M for that reason alone.
:cyclops:
I was in this exact scenario a month ago. I tried the Razr M first and didn't like it for three big reasons: 1) the camera is horrible. I don't know how they messed that one up so badly, but they did. 2) The phone was really slow on ICS. I'm not sure how much better it is on JB, but it was driving me nuts. 3) I actually didn't find the reception to be that great.
The S3 has better specs and better dev support as mentioned, but it is a bigger phone. At first that is why I went with the Razr M but I ended up being a very, very happy S3 owner. Everything from the camera to speed to especially the dev support... all awesome.
Thanks for your input, but I'll be going with the M.
The S3 feels like crap compared to the M, and the compact device fits my smaller hands perfectly.
Both devices are equally fast and speedy.
As dev support goes, I'll just have to port some good ROMs.

What radio issues? - the S3 is perfect and works better than any other phone on the market! JK Someone usually posts this sort of defensive thing when I mention the crappy radio on the Samsung phones with Verizon, I'm glad others mention it as I hope somehow that feedback will get back to Samsung and they will improve the radio as I really like their phones otherwise.
I think the Radio issue is a hit or miss on the S3. I have no issues. I get better reception in bad areas with my S3 than I did with my Razr Maxx. But I probably got lucky with a good one. I use to have the S2 on Sprint and I know exactly what people are talking about when they say the radio is bad. That phone was the worst for wireless radio.
