4gb internal storage is useless, or is it not

I know there are problems with android using or seeing over 2gb, so i wont bother with talking about that.
Instead, i wonder why i am running very low on memory when there is 2gb internal storage that android will see or use. I removed alot of the att crap using titanium backup.
Android install uses, really, that much for the rom and stuff that ONLY half (1gb) is free for us to use up?
I wonder if its possible to increase the internal memory seen?? Probably not. But i remember back using the hd2 with android we could increase the data file size to 2gb and it had alot more room to play with

What do you mean? I've got the Captivate, and it has a 2GB ROM and has 1.42GB free, and then both the internal and external SD cards are approx 16GB each and Android sees that.

This has nothing to do with sd cards. Im only talking about INTERNAL memory. The inspire has 4gb INTERNAL and android only can work with 2. So the other 2 of internal memory is useless, right now anyways. I think maybe in the future a newer version of android may be able to use it ..... but whatever

I've got a lot of apps installed. Including some that takes a lot of space like Need for Speed Shift.

The Inspire 4G has 4GB of internal memory, 1GB of which is usable.

I don't care about the other 2gb of memory. I want to know why the Rom uses almost a gig itself and we get left with almost nothing. I know I can move apps to storage card, but that's not what I'm looking for as an answer. Does the Rom actually use a gig and we get left with the other gig? I just don't get how a Rom can use that much.

It has 1GB of usable storage. Froyo allows you to install apps on the SD card. If you can manage to fill 1GB of non-SD apps then honestly, you have to many apps. That's probably approaching the 3-digit number of apps. Don't worry about specs so much and just focus on actual performance.

I asked HTC why, on a device that's advertised with 4gb internal memory, no one sees more than a little over 1gb free. This was the official response I got from HTC regarding the issue:

I understand the importance of being able to use the fully memory capacity of your HTC Inspire 4G. The 4GB of ROM on your device is shared with the operating system and all programs that are pre-installed on the device. I do apologize for any inconvenience that you may have experienced through this.

I mean I'm not gonna get my panties in a bunch about it. I have plenty of room on my SD...and if it's true that this space is used to optimize the OS, then OK. It would be nice to have access to all of that storage - but it's not necessary. I wish that this would be how they advertised it though, rather than just saying 4gb internal memory

Doesn't bother me at all. I have over 850mb of it free.
Gotta love CM7.

So the OS is using a whopping gig of the internal storage. Ok, i already KNEW that. It still doesnt explain why this phone is using that much and my dell streak has a gig and a half available when reset to factory default and nothing installed.
With the HD2 running froyo off the sd card, and the img set to 2gb, same thing, it had alot more than a gig left. Heck, some roms for that were set with 1gb img file and froyo didnt use it all up from the geckgo.
It just doesnt make any sense to me. Im not looking for more space for apps, i have alot of space left, but when i dont, im going to be going ....... WTF
Im sure there are going to be some app monkeys running out of room and asking the same thing.

On a related note (just to clarify that I am not directly addressing the main issue at hand), I have 21 apps installed, 6 of which are games, and still have .96GB free. How many freaking apps do you guys have installed to be running out of space? At my rate, I would probably have to install over 200 apps to run out of space.

Since you're not too good at this whole discussion thing, let me explain how we got here.
A) I realize that this thread is about the fact that we only see 1 of the 4GB of internal memory. I don't know exactly why that is.
B) You said in the first post "i am running very low on memory".
C) In a question relating to something you said in your original post, I asked how you could possibly be running low on memory.
D) Relax. Breath. It's going to be ok. Discussions sometimes lead to other questions on related topics. You can't let those questions weigh on you... the burden is too much for a single man to carry. You just have to answer these related questions to free yourself from the awful stress.

what about other phones with more then 4gigs like 8gigs of internal memory? do they still only have about 2gigs worth of space to play with? that's gotta be pretty bogus.

The galaxy s series has 8-16gb but about 3 is set aside for OS and apps. There's one example.

What I meant for running low on memory is more geared at the Rom taking a whooping 1 gig and out of the 2 gigs Android will see, out of the stupid 4 installed, and that leaves me with a whooping 1 gig. Not a whole lot. As it stands, I have about 800 mg left and I wouldn't consider that running low. We should have about a gig and a half available, if not more. Roms really are only about 250mb. REALLY?????

No. The OS uses a good amount of it. As it should.

If you want to see more info on the memory, download an app called 'Quick System Info' free from the market.

I noticed this too.
I downloaded and installed Quick System Info, but that shows total RAM as being 729MB !!!!!!!!!!!!
I spoke to Asus support about this, who didn't really have a clue! The girl there confirmed that their 1GB test model also showed the same RAM under settings (531ish), but didn't have quick system info.
She reckoned that the OS would be using the rest, although I didn't believe this. Surely system info would still report the RAM that the OS has reserved, but just show it as unavailable? Also, 295MB sounds like a lot for the OS to steal. They'd have no chance of installing Honeycomb on phones, that often only have 256 - 512Mb total RAM to start with!
She then tried to blame it on the different calculations that they use to calculate Gigabytes. This is usually down to taking 1mb to be 1000 kb, rather than 1024kb. To lose 295Mb out of 1024 would have to be one seriously optimistic calculation!
Anyway, if anybody can come up with a proper answer to this, I would like to know where the RAM has gone.
Does anybody have a Xoom to compare to? Surely that should show the same.

Don't forget that the GPU will be wanting some of that RAM as well, so we can maybe expect 128mb of ram to the GPU.

this post illustrate users and vendors story on Memory Free when its sold, and when enduser buy it.
Like getting a 1000GB Hardrive, you never get 1000GB out of it.
in our case the kernel can be configured to allocate what memory block size is allocated for gpu and vm.
but before all this happens, you machine do ineed have 1024MB memory.

I just double checked. This issue is also present on the Xoom.

I don't know why, i installed only 20 apps and the 2gb of internal memory are already full...

2gb of the 16 are dedicated to the app...the biggest one for me is the dictionary (60mb)...and yes, system apps are included

My situation as of now:
User-storage ("sd-card"): 9.93Gb, 6.03Gb free
Internal storage (apps): 2.21Gb, 1.70Gb free
System Storage (system): 0.98Gb, 192Mb free <-- could it be you're looking at this? This won't matter, it won't fill up as apps go to internal.
then you have the System cache, Memory(ram) and some other small partitions in there.
I have about 80-ish apps installed on top of the stock apps, and have removed a handfull or so of unwanted apps from system.

No, i'm looking to the internal memory...Now, after a reboot, i have only 108 mb of free memory without installing anything new....

Memory and storage are not the same thing. There is no way you are using the majority of 2 GB of app storage this early in the device. There is a way that you have 170 MB of free memory if you have memory abusing apps or just a bunch of apps that run in the background.

Internal memory is the RAM. I'm usually hoovering around 110-180Mb free here, out of barely 700Mb total (the last 300-ish Mb up to the advertised 1Gb is reserved for system processes)
Pull up quick system info pro from google play and get the full listing

back up your **** and do a full wipe, start a fresh and see what memory is left before installing all you apps

In that case, I'd look to other causes. Did you by any chance restore any backups from your last phone?
It's a good idea to install all apps fresh from market and restore data only, and to do that only after the app are confirmed working.
It might solve your problems to start from scratch; factory reset.
It's the best sollution I can come up with from the top of my head.....

Looking at the One X there seems to be full 1gb available for the user... it also has 1gb ram

i've done a full reset... now the phone seems ok.... i reinstalled all the previous app and now i have 1.90Gb of free internal memory...

Ok, what app is reporting that? Because when I use Quick System Info Pro, I see a total of 685Mb Memory, 252Mb Cache and 39.57Mb A2SD storage. This totals just about the 1Gb that should be available.

You do know that you can transfer your apps to the rest of the memory available, right? Go to apps, manage apps, downloaded and here you can transfer to the 'memory card' memory thus have more internal memory free.

Is One X using it's 1 GB ram in some other way then?
When I look in "active tasks" (forgot the name) in both One S and One X I get very different total amount of ram.
In One X it's about 1 GB , but in One S it's only 700 MB!
Isn't One X using 300 MB cache in ram or?

It shouldn't really matter but unused RAM is "wasted" RAM anyways..

They both have 1 GB ram (in spec)....

As much as this bugs the average geek, I don't think it's actually a bad thing that the RAM has been pre-hogged by the system on the One S. If you ever tried the HTC One X you'd notice how "laggy" the interface can get at times. Not sure if it depends on RAM but I'd dare to say that the One S has the advantage on responsiveness.
I have also only experience 1 FC in total since I got this phone.. mostly due to an old app. So there's nothing really bugging me about it.

My 1st day with Note3, quick review.

Was fed up with my Htc One camera tint issue and got this yesterday. Just finished 1 full day with the Exynos version this evening, thought id share my experience here which should help other people.

Nop, its still the same as my grey Note2. Cyan is a mix of green and blue. Yellow is completely green and with a bit of yellow.
White is red, green and blue.
Attached the pic of yellow which shows green. Sorry for bad quality pic. I only have my wife's iphone as cam.

Yesh. Its snapdragon.

I really like the Note 3 but it is too big for me (although I have S4 ) and I don't use the S-Pen on daily basis so it has no use for me.

That's why after running a few apps, nearly all of the available RAM is used. But this is ok, this just means that when you swap back to those apps, they're instantly available. When you open another app, the oldest app in memory is silently killed to free up the necessary RAM.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm sure the system is using up more than an average amount to account for the multitasking stuff alone, but saying that after a few apps have been used it's using 2.3GB of memory is a bit misleading. It may as well use that RAM, or what's the point in having it?

This is something most android users fail to grasp. :good:
Understandably of course since most of us use windows or other platforms, with less memory sometimes means better performance. But memory in general is there to be USED not the opposite.

Yup i agree. But the amount of Ram used on my One and Note 2 was much less. Im sure there are some background processes goin on other than the open apps.
Ill post a screenshot of open apps vs ram as soon as i get to my office wifi..

Here, screenshot of open apps and available RAM attached..

The only negative of ram used is power drawn else ram used is good. I remember when people were complaining that vista used ram all the while the machine ran smoother over all as programs were loaded into ram instead of much slower HDD.

1) - 32GB internal with 6GB allotted to system. Currently have 24.58GB available on mine.
2) - Disabled a few. 1.6GB ram on boot.
If i do not even use the device or open any apps, after about 30 mins the ram goes up to 2.0 or 2.1GB unnecessarily..

Thanks for this mate. I guess 24.58GB is decent enough (coming from an S4 with only 8.90GB), though i'm guessing you have the SM-9005 snapdragon as someone said his has 23GB+ earlier.
And when root methods come, or custom ROMs, RAM usage will change.

Nop i have the Exynos version..

I returned the HTC One before the 14 day return period, but for more reasons than just the camera. Battery life was terrible and non-expandable. There was no way I was going to stay tied to a charger. I liked the look of it, but after I stuck a case on it I realized what it looks like esthetically doesn't matter.

Heads Up - Motoral have sold 4GB models of their Peregrine???

I bought my peregrine the other day from Tesco Direct. When I plugged it into my computer it showed that the internal memory of the phone was 5GB and that 4GB was available. I immediately checked on my phone under 'settings' 'storage' and similarly it read 5.52GB total and 4.09GB free.
I called up Tesco Direct and got passed around the departments for about 20 minutes. When I was put through to their mobile tech support they told me I was the second person today to call about the exact same issue and that it's a problem on Motorola's part.
I haven't seen anything about this elsewhere on the internet so thought I'd give you potential buyers a heads up.

Basically, your phone won't have exactly 8GB to start with. It'll be like 7.5 or 7.6. Idk, ask someone who knows more about it (I think its because of rounding the MB to GB). Anyway, after that, the operating System takes a sizeable chunk out of that. So that leaves 5.52GB. You have 4.09GB free after all the apps/ updates n stuff.

You are about right. When I purchased the 8GB version of the Moto G x1032, it also had around 4GB free from the 8GB of storage. Now, I don't really need that much storage, but 4GB wasn't enough of me, so I traded it for the 16GB version of the Moto G x1032. That 16GB version had a little under 13GB (More like 12.9GB) storage space left. The only weird thing is that system images of stock firmware are around 700MB. So I don't really know what all those GB's are used for exactly…

700mb with compression. When you flash the system.img - files are uncompressed.

Actually more like 7.1GB is left and it's due to formatting and the file system overheads.
Then you've got to wonder which definition of gigabyte their using.
Windows uses gigabyte = 1024 MB what android uses I don't know.
But disk manufactures use gigabyte = 1000MB
Which is correct I might add.

Yeah it's a 1024 if you count binary.
gibibyte = 1024 MiB
gigabyte = 1000MB
Windows isn't supposed to report as GB it's GiB in binary.
Mac osx counts in decimal so can the Linux kernel there's only windows who's never changed it.

There is no 4GB model. This thread has explained that you have an 8GB model and why you have as much space as you do. My 8GB Moto G (non-LTE) also says 5.52GB 'Total space.' Oh right lol. Yes I'm planning on unlocking the bootloader and rooting eventually.
I was already aware of the reasons for memory usage but just not this much. That's why I've asked for someone with the exact same model to confirm that my case is normal.
Also, could anyone point me in the right direction for why the 4.4.4 update isn't available for me? I'm in the UK.
