I know there are problems with android using or seeing over 2gb, so i wont bother with talking about that.
Instead, i wonder why i am running very low on memory when there is 2gb internal storage that android will see or use. I removed alot of the att crap using titanium backup.
Android install uses, really, that much for the rom and stuff that ONLY half (1gb) is free for us to use up?
I wonder if its possible to increase the internal memory seen?? Probably not. But i remember back using the hd2 with android we could increase the data file size to 2gb and it had alot more room to play with

What do you mean? I've got the Captivate, and it has a 2GB ROM and has 1.42GB free, and then both the internal and external SD cards are approx 16GB each and Android sees that.

This has nothing to do with sd cards. Im only talking about INTERNAL memory. The inspire has 4gb INTERNAL and android only can work with 2. So the other 2 of internal memory is useless, right now anyways. I think maybe in the future a newer version of android may be able to use it ..... but whatever

I've got a lot of apps installed. Including some that takes a lot of space like Need for Speed Shift.
The Inspire 4G has 4GB of internal memory, 1GB of which is usable.

I don't care about the other 2gb of memory. I want to know why the Rom uses almost a gig itself and we get left with almost nothing. I know I can move apps to storage card, but that's not what I'm looking for as an answer. Does the Rom actually use a gig and we get left with the other gig? I just don't get how a Rom can use that much.

It has 1GB of usable storage. Froyo allows you to install apps on the SD card. If you can manage to fill 1GB of non-SD apps then honestly, you have to many apps. That's probably approaching the 3-digit number of apps. Don't worry about specs so much and just focus on actual performance.
I asked HTC why, on a device that's advertised with 4gb internal memory, no one sees more than a little over 1gb free. This was the official response I got from HTC regarding the issue:

I mean I'm not gonna get my panties in a bunch about it. I have plenty of room on my SD...and if it's true that this space is used to optimize the OS, then OK. It would be nice to have access to all of that storage - but it's not necessary. I wish that this would be how they advertised it though, rather than just saying 4gb internal memory

So the OS is using a whopping gig of the internal storage. Ok, i already KNEW that. It still doesnt explain why this phone is using that much and my dell streak has a gig and a half available when reset to factory default and nothing installed.
With the HD2 running froyo off the sd card, and the img set to 2gb, same thing, it had alot more than a gig left. Heck, some roms for that were set with 1gb img file and froyo didnt use it all up from the geckgo.
It just doesnt make any sense to me. Im not looking for more space for apps, i have alot of space left, but when i dont, im going to be going ....... WTF
Im sure there are going to be some app monkeys running out of room and asking the same thing.
On a related note (just to clarify that I am not directly addressing the main issue at hand), I have 21 apps installed, 6 of which are games, and still have .96GB free. How many freaking apps do you guys have installed to be running out of space? At my rate, I would probably have to install over 200 apps to run out of space.

Since you're not too good at this whole discussion thing, let me explain how we got here.
A) I realize that this thread is about the fact that we only see 1 of the 4GB of internal memory. I don't know exactly why that is.
B) You said in the first post "i am running very low on memory".
C) In a question relating to something you said in your original post, I asked how you could possibly be running low on memory.
D) Relax. Breath. It's going to be ok. Discussions sometimes lead to other questions on related topics. You can't let those questions weigh on you... the burden is too much for a single man to carry. You just have to answer these related questions to free yourself from the awful stress.

The galaxy s series has 8-16gb but about 3 is set aside for OS and apps. There's one example.

What I meant for running low on memory is more geared at the Rom taking a whooping 1 gig and out of the 2 gigs Android will see, out of the stupid 4 installed, and that leaves me with a whooping 1 gig. Not a whole lot. As it stands, I have about 800 mg left and I wouldn't consider that running low. We should have about a gig and a half available, if not more. Roms really are only about 250mb. REALLY?????

1 GB is all you will ever get to use.
The rest is taken up by the system.
Isn't 1 GB enough for you?
Your best bet is to use an SD card, which you should have anyway. malybru's right, the rest is used by Android, and manufacturers/carriers love to slap the total storage on there anyway. It's kind of like buying a laptop. If you get a 500GB hard drive, and Windows takes up 25GB, they're not going to advertise a 475GB hard drive - they'll say it's total storage.

Manufacturers commonly leave extra space available for future updates which will require more of that 3GB be taken up.

Yes, this is the point of my question. My rom uses under 300mb of the available 1GB. (actually 1.15GB) I want to know how to hack and recover some of the rest of this space. I thought I had read that using the HTC boot unlocker gave you access to this space, but I have not been able to find anything on if this is true.

It only unlocked the bootloader to run non-official software. No one has ever claimed it would allow you to repartition your phone.

Just got HTC One S in the mail today, I was aware of the limited storage of the phone by reading the forums here, users said I should have around 10GB of "user" storage. Quite far from the advertised 16 haha!
I understand the ~2GB is dedicated to apps etc.
My question is:
Has anyone figured out how to repartition the storage in order to decrease app storage, and increase user storage? (maybe by a different rom etc?)
I personally wouldn't mind having 1GB of app space just to fit a few more albums of music (I love music on my phone)
I'm thinking even if I used nobloat to remove the t-mobile preloaded stuff, I would only increase the application storage (which does nothing for but increase just the application storage space?)
Somebody give me some help here

Removing the bloat will only free up space on your system partition, not /data where your downloaded apps are stored. I'm not sure if anyone has repartitioned the One S yet, though.

Your HTC Hero prolly had S-OFF or a similar removal of protections in place. As of now, without S-OFF we cannot repartition, becaue we cannot write to locked areas of the NAND / NVRAM (whatever it is exactly...) and therefore we can't resize partitions.

That's assuming its an actual SD Card, and not some memory soldered in place (most likely)

Run some read/write speed tests, you'd be pretty lucky to get an SD card that could put up the numbers this phone does. It's a very tiny chance it's an SD card, but I refuse to give up hope until it's proven.

I am converted to no sd card phones, as the memory here is fine for me--got dropbox/google drive etc if needed
If you have decent coverage in your area you can try google play. And I'm pretty sure you can download the music directly to your phone from it, if the area you'll be in is spotty.

You definitely won't without s-off. Or, more likely an exploit like Blackrose which was developed for the N1. Where it simulates s-off to resize partitions. But, is not true s-off as related to the secure flag. I don't know if it is easy for dev to look at Blackrose in N1 sub-forum and carry that over to One S--
So were talking about this:
4 GB's for the OS, 1 GB for the system apps (after potential resize). Gaining only 1 GB for the User. Increasing the User avalible space to 11GB's.
That seems like a lot of work for only 1GB. Unless someone could trim the OS down by half. 13GB usable....hmmm!

I don't think that's going to be possible with out S-Off. Which as far as I know hasn't been achieved yet.

It Does. There are a handful (so far) of android phones that will - after reformatting the card. Look it up! The G2x happens to be one of them. I know this because I have been running this card for the last 2 days without a glitch.

You only loose 4GB there's 59.36GB Total space. He used the other ~35 GB.

ROFL. No it was meant to be 64 GB disk but its showing 59.xx hence 4.xx GB gone with the formatting. The available space is what left in his memory card after he filled it partially.

If you get a 320gb hd, you're only able to use about 95% of the total space.
Go to Google and ask why that happens, it explains it somewhere. Don't just jump to conclusions without first trying to solve/educate why some things are how they are.
Even on the back of some memory cards/hard drives it'll also tell you that you won't be able to use the entire space.

Computers see 1GB as 1024mb
Humans see 1GB as 1000mb
When they market their card as 64GB they do it the human version (64000mb)
When your computer sees it, it counts a GB as 1024mb, so obviously it wont end up being 64GB counting that way.

You actually do get the full 64gb...if you paid attention enough. But it's a matter of the discrepancy between binary numbering and decimal numbering schemes used.
If you do a right click and hit "properties" of your hard drives (where you see the pie chart), and look under "capacity", you'll see a value that hits what you're looking for, if not close. Be it 64gb or 320gb.
My laptop drive is 120GB and shows: 119787220992 bytes (read, 119 billion, just a hair below 120), for a capacity of 111GB. You're not losing 9gb, it's just information being represented differently.

I switched from a 32GB Pny class 10 to this 64GB Sandisk card. I don't see any difference in performance or speed. I use my G2x to stream audio files to my bluetooth headphones all day at work. I have watched a full length movie, taken and watched other videos with my phone during this week. I dont see any drawbacks at all. It took a long time to transfer 29GB from my old card to the new, but this is understandable and normal

Short answer? No. The internal memory is reserved only for the system partition. Even if you could throw some mp3's into a folder in the system side. There's not a music player out there that would look for the files in the system partition. So, no man. You're outta luck.

From there you could move a folder of music from sd to /folder name..... Then from root explorer you could use the music files one at a time .... Best bet go to rat shack and get a 32 gb sd for like $20.....

Well, actually you don't want to stick in /system or /anythingelse, you will bootloop.... If you copy anything to internal storage, it is best to "attempt" put it in /data/music or something, but that is still not a good way to do it. Now this is all just in theory mind you, as it is known that putting things that were not meant to go in certain places on this phone has caused way more heartache than it should and caused more bootloops than I care to elaborate on now.

all of my internal memory is going waste..i hardly use any apps....all i do is music and vids.....i had 16 gb card but it had problems with my ph.....my battery wasnt lasting long enough.... so internal memory problem is the same with other phones also ....i wonder how ppl use nexus phones?
Some phones have user accessible internal storage and in those phones it's done in a way that the user wont be able to modify critical system files. The Atrix 2 is not one of those phones so if you make a mistake you will get a bootloop like hankbizzo5 said. How did you determine that the SD card was reducing your battery life?
Just make sure you get a class 4 card and you'll be fine.
my battery was draining very fast...so i used battery monitor widget...i showed me 200-300 mA discharge even when screen off....so i formatted....same peroblem....i changed the sd from 16 gb sandisk class 4 to 2 gb ....nw everything is fine

Yeah, I got an idea.... go find Jims sig and click on his dropbox link, sign up, and you will have 2.5gbs free online storage and you can even put your files in a public folder to play them from anywhere. Its not 4gb but it could be if you then get other people to sign up.
FWIW, I used a 32gb class 10 from time to time and never really noticed a battery problem. That's interesting.

No nothing can be done as far as actually utilizing the internal storage for your personal use. Yes, I'm not surprised your note can do it, add I have access to my internal storage on my skyrocket. But you just can't do it with the A2.

We all know that an 8GB Tab 2 has half of its storage for the system and the other half acting as a virtual SD card.
Is it possible to shrink the system partition and increase the the size of the virtual SD card? I know there are several partitions in use, but I hope you can see where I am coming from.

I was thinking of having 2gb for the system and 6gb for the virtual SD card, like on an S2. Wouldn't that make more sense?
Seems nobody has an answer...
With so many posts complaining about the 4gb of user data I would have thought my post would have attracted some responses.
As it stands other devices have had their partitions resized. It seems to be a case of using ADB and using the "parted" command. I might give it a blast when I'm not so busy at the moment, but surely others must have thought the same as me.
Am I really the only one who thinks that 4gb for the system is way excessive?

My guess is they have a JB rom that supports apps to extsd or they have swapped the extsd for sd, so that the external is the main http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1961097 there are tons of solutions to this and getting past file sizes greater than 4 gig. Just use the search engine http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php
