I have been following Skyrocket development from day one, and yet I am confused about the push for NFC in current ROMs.
How is everyone using NFC with their Skyrocket at the present time? Certainly I understand the potential future uses for NFC -retail, data, ect; but what functionality does it serve anyone now?
A quick example. I have a nfc tag sitting on my nightstand. At night when I go to bed I set my phone on the tag. It automatically turns my wifi off, turns my alarm on, and turns the night mode clock on. Its really neat stuff. Paying with NFC (which we can't do yet) is only scratching the surface when it comes to this technology. If your interested more Google search it. There is tons of stuff.

that's something I haven't thought of! cool example. Where do you get the tags? I assume you might then use a program similar to tasker with NFC support?
Funny story. Its actually a rewards tag for a gas station I frequently visit. You just scan the tag at checkout, I'm sure you've seen something like it before. I was just thinking about it one day and came to the conclusion that the tag had to be NFC. So I stuck it to my phone but the pre installed NFC app just kept force closing, so I downloaded one from the market and it worked. I can read and write to it no problem. however my wife has a similiar tag for a different store and I can read it but I cannot write to it as for blank tags just Google search "blank NFC tags".

What app are you using as well?
I was using sky ics at the time. There are a few roms that have it enabled. As for apps look at the screen shot from market. I've palyed with most of them. I haven't however purchased any blank tags. I think im gonna look into that

I'll chime in as well I'm on Alien rom and I got my nfc tags from http://tagsfordroid.com/tags/Home.html. NFC Task Launcher is a cool fairly cheap app that lets you do quite a number of tasks from a nfc tag. If you want to write just standard nfc tags then I like NFC TagWriter by NXP.

Dude, that is cool as hell! You've inspired me to try something like this out...
I keep meaning to build an NFC into my house lock so I can just scan my phone to open the door, never get around to it though.
Android beam is pretty cool too. If I'm looking at a webpage I just put the back of my phone and my wife's phone together wait for the prompt and touch the screen. It opens up either web page, you tube, whatever and then opens up what I was looking at

Just started using nfc on superlite 5.1, ordered 5 blanks from ebay for around 5$ i presume, you could probably get it cheaper from the US sellers.
I'm using NFC task launcher which works great and you can combine it with Tasker.
At the moment I have a tag attached to my car dock which automatically reduces brightness to 0(so my battery wont overheat while charging) and opens the GPS.
Only got my tags yesterday and downloaded the apps so I still got a lot to learn but so far it seems really useful.
I imagine to people with an office or those who use the phone for work stuff it can be even more useful for forcing a sync or almost anything you can think of at a certain place.

At the moment there doesn't seems to be way to do it in the app itself, you'll have to contact the developer. But when I used the phone on a tag when silent mode is on there was no noise, so maybe you can use tasker to silence it right before and enable sound right after.
To the other guy just buy them, I bought 5 from ebay for 5$ and at the moment got no use for 4 of them.

I am ultimately looking for an actual monitor that she can carry with her and attach it to her phone via bluetooth or cord and then use an app to manage the data like the DigiFit app.

This would actually be awesome as an EMT. I mean, a steth and cuff are usually what I use but on the fly this would be kind of cool. Let me know if you find anything.

Their scale works with android, why not the bpm.
I have the scale from this company. when you weigh yourself it sends your data over WiFi to their site, and there is an android app that pulls that data.
I'm surprised their bpm doesn't have a similar feature. I pulled the manual and read it just in case but yes, its ios device only. stupid of them. they should have included the same WiFi functionality (and your wife could enabling wifi tethering during measurements.)
Hopefully they will figure this out for the next version.

I bought qardioarm and it seems good or more accurate than expensive omron, other digital, and cheap manual. Problem with these or this specific device is i need to have location enabled. Then it transfers data to the company and then i can email it to myself of others via the app. I wish i knew how to make an app to connect with qardio and save data locally without enabling location and sending data to them online.
I just noticed that Walgreens is not activating any of their nfc payment systems because of security issues and just today I found out that wawa gas stations no longer have them due to some type of issues they were having with malware with their system. Seems more companies are discontinuing their use over setting the systems up.
I hope they get this supposed security problem figured out soon. I love using my phone to pay.

This was only ever a pipe dream to be honest. Too many ways it can be hacked, far too insecure for real world use.
Far, far too unsafe for public use. You can hack it with stickers for goodness sake.
Not to mention, people are far too moronic in the way and guard they use their phones to make this work. On an average day at Uni, I see about 200 phones I could nick without them noticing it. And consequentially use to pay for anything, because apparently people are not smart enough to realize that a pattern lock leaves a fingertrail. And their code is pretty much always a date of relevance. Which they've undoubtably mentioned somewhere on their Facebook.
I don't think the reason is security on the phone but on the unit in the store. The phone itself is more secure than using a debit card. If someone steals your card they are able to use it at most stores without ever being asked for id. My phone not only has a passcode but once you try to use the wallet app it asks for another code. Overall I think the security issue is with the store and if that can be resolved nfc payments can continue.

Mobile NFC payments are far more secure than any other form of physical payment.

If you could provide details about how a sticker can hack nfc then maybe you could have a point. But as far as all the research I have done nfc payments are more secure than paying with a debit card.

Because the NFC tag can be set to many things like storing and sending the info used to pay. And it doesnt take much to reprogram the tag, They are about as safe as a debt card which we all know is not 100%

What tag are you talking about. The phones use an nfc chip and the stores use an nfc system. No one uses a sticker. The stickers your talking about are the ones sold that can let you perform tasks on your phone. What do they have to do with making secure payments from the phone.

Its the Same tech. I installed these in a few stores and saw how easy it would be to allow it to be reprogrammed.
That's why just like if you see a weird looking atm and don't use it you should not use an nfc scanner. Plus you can tell if their is some weird sticker on the nfc scanner. And this proves again that using your phone is not unsecure it's the system that is at the store that can be compromised by idiots. Plus if your Google wallet app doesn't activate after swiping then that should be an indication of something going wrong. Plus those nfc task stickers do not have access to the Google wallet app. So what your saying is flawed and not the reason why stores are removing the units. I think the units are being tampered with by people or the store employees and stores don't want to deal with this. With updated nfc systems this security issue can be resolved. It's just a matter if this makes money for Google. If it doesn't they will just scrap it

Just found out there's a new more secure nfc payment system. Saw it for the first time at toysrus. The swipe area for nfc payments is built in right to the touchscreen where you would enter prompts. This is a lot more secure and a solution to all these so called sticker problems. No one can put a sticker on the screen as it will block everyone from using it. Hopefully nfc payments get back on track. Just used mine at cvs and McDonald's

Hey everyone!
I got my Nexus 5 last week and I feel that one of the features that is often overlooked in most of the reviews and forums is the "Tap & Pay" feature using NFC. I didn't try it out myself till a few days ago and it has turned out to be one of my top reasons to love the Nexus 5.
After you link the google wallet app to Tap & Pay and setup a pin, you are able to use your phone to make payment at PoS devices that support this feature. Now, a lot of people say this is very limited but I live and work in Jersey/NYC and a lot of major retailers have this option. ShopRite/ Walmart/ NYC cabs/ Pharmacies etc.
The best part is the look on people's faces when i whip out my Nexus 5, complete my transaction with a light tap and answer their questions with "It's the new Nexus 5 !! " Even my friends who have HTC One/S4/iPhone can't compete with that because they can't have google wallet due to stupid carrier/bank restrictions. Their version of google wallet, Isis, is nowhere as good and iBeacon (ios) isn't releasing anytime soon.
If you live in a major city, then there are bound to be a lot of places where this will come in handy. Anyone else have any experiences with Tap & Pay?
Definitely a cool feature. I tried this out last week for the first time ever. I have to see how many stores have this feature in Miami / ft Lauderdale. Coming from ios this say never possible.

Definitely a cool feature, but not limited to N5. I love the reaction I get when I use my phone for payment. Just today, at Sports Authority, I used Tap and a Pay, the cashier was definitely surprised, she asked about it and was so disappointed to hear that iPhones can't do the same thing.

anyone figured out how to get this working in Australia?
The REAL and the only reason why I returned my Note3 back to T-Mobile, is for this tap-&-pay service through Google Wallet.
I've gotten fed up with all the carrier restrictions crap, and the fiasco with ISIS.
I really really do enjoy Google wallet with my Nexus 5.

You'd have to get the cards into google wallet, which it won't let you here.
OTOH since most of the functionality is now in the OS, it's entirely possible someone could write a tap & pay app using that framework that worked in the UK.
Since I live in Salt Lake City, I was in the test market for Isis. I must say it was pretty neat to be able to use my Note 2 to tap and pay to get on the transit system. The bad thing was, half way through my ride back home my phone died. The police on the transit system have NFC scanners that they use to verify if you actually paid with that device or not so having a dead phone wouldn't prove that you made a payment. In that case they either give you a ticket for a first offense or fine you and kick you off at the next stop. Thankfully they didn't check in time for me to get off at my stop.
I only used Google Wallet twice and it worked just as well as Isis, if not a bit faster.
I will say though, its either really cool when it works but its also really embarrassing when it doesn't. A few times I tried tapping the phone and nothing happened. Pretty awkward situation

Wow. I'm amazed that any police department would invest in the equipment and training to do this. Very cool.
I haven't gotten it to work yet. It's setup, and to be fair i've only tried at Walgreens....
I've been waiting for this feature in Canada since GNex time, but Google Wallet doesnt work here, and theres no alternative either..
How do you know if a register is NFC enabled? Is there a sign or something where you would normally swipe a card or something that says tap here?
I've been using NFC payment on my N4, and before that on a rooted S3 with the Xposed patch for Google Wallet. It always surprises people when I pay with my phone, and one woman (who runs a Pho restaurant near my offices) has to show everyone when I come in and pay with my phone.
I find a few things humorous about ISIS:
- ISIS is not available on the Nexus series of phones, even though they have the hardware and software to support it.
- ISIS SIMs are not available locally through the carrier, even after launch.
I hope ISIS succeeds, but if it doesn't I hope that Google will buy the consortium out and integrate them into Wallet.

Look for either the NFC, Mastercard PayPass, Google Wallet, or Isis logos. Lot of the registers here in SLC has the Isis and Paypass logos.

These Utah cops don't play around. I'm not quite sure how the scanner actually determines whether or not you paid though. Maybe the device stores an ID in the system or something. They've been using the technology for years since University Students get an NFC card that grants them free rides.
I haven't tried an nfc payment on my nexus 5, even with my nexus 4, I have wanted too but I didn't want to be "that guy" at the register incase something goes wrong.
I would love to start using this.. unfortunately, google doesnt like anywhere else except US.. lol

I saw the phone's announcement, and in my opinion they should never let Charlie Chang present a phones again.
It was one of the most awkward announcements I watched. He looked like he is going to explode, and every feature he presented it looked like he is praying to god that it will work.
but that's one thing.
during the presentation he tried to activate google assistant through the Edge Sense, and it didn't work, then he tried again and it failed again, then he made the most awkward "ooopss" he could make, while trying again couple of times until he continued presenting the google assistant without mentioning or talking about the incident (which is understandable but still troubling).
the weirdest thing is that I can't find any review or post that talks about it, I thought the press will destroy Htc for this screw up.
for me it's really troubling, this gimmick can be nice, but it's the first time we see something like this on any phone and I have doubts about its quality.

Meh, to say that I've never had stuff like that happen on any phone I've owned would be a huge understatement.
Had a unit in hand to test it one week ahead of the official announcement. On my test unit the Edge Sense worked really good, after getting accustomed after the first 30 Minutes and configuring it to my pressure sensitivity in settings.

Jeah some other people already tried Edge Sense and said something similar like @5m4r7ph0n36uru said. Its working okay or good - better then many expected. But for me its just a nice to have. Lets see how much they can improve this feature with future Software updates. Maybe its just a feature that ends up being a public prototype which would also be okay. If this feature is any good they will probably improve the hardware behind it in a future device.
I mean its the same with the fingerprint scanners, the first and even second version in the iPhone was quite bad in my opinion. The one in the 6s is good, but the ones before where too slow and the failure rate was too high (for me).

I wouldn't read too much into it - could be nerves, could be the phone wasn't set up properly for him, old software, etc.
Microsoft launched a version of windows (I think it might have been Win98) and during the launch they encountered the Blue Screen Of Death... it didn't seem to have much impact on their future!
I'm not too worried. If it doesn't work well I will just disable it. The phone is still nice.

They will update it. As HTC told in the same briefing, they are already planing to implement Double-Tab as a possibility to take further actions with Edge Sense, though they couldn't tell the date at this time but only that it is on the list. So I guess they are definitely planing to implement more gestures by such a step making short press, long press and double press available. With two different force settings, this would give us six gestures in total to configure for separate actions.
Something further is App based actions that'll be implemented to change the action resulting from a short press depending on the App you're using.

I hope so and i am sure they will but all I'm saying is that the hardware will be limited like i said with the fingerprint or another example the pressure sensitivity from the surface pen. In the first iterations it only had 256 different steps now they have around 2000. (not sure about the exact numbers here )
My hope is not too big about this squeeze feature in the first iteration but i am curious and will give it a try.

during the presentation he tried to activate google assistant through the Edge Sense, and it didn't work, then he tried again and it failed again, then he made the most awkward "ooopss" he could make, while trying again couple of times until he continued presenting the google assistant without mentioning or talking about the incident (which is understandable but still troubling).
the weirdest thing is that I can't find any review or post that talks about it, I thought the press will destroy Htc for this screw up.
for me it's really troubling, this gimmick can be nice, but it's the first time we see something like this on any phone and I have doubts about its quality.

I thought the same Totally agreed with you... But I'm still buying the phone.. I hope after 1-2 updates it will work better.
I am lucky I wasn't in his shoes. Very awkward indeed. His hands were shaking.
I don't think it will damage sales. And in a live event anything can happen.
I don't think it even had to do with edge sense TBH... I think it had to do with the assistant apps themselves and probably the internet connection within the venue.
Mine works well do far. I just need to remember about it. I've left it starting the camera and it's good.
Honestly, I was hoping the edge sense would have worked just as the early videos showed of a couple walking the street and navigating the app drawer with the edge. Maybe version 2. But that was sick!

Can't say I've every been walking the street and needed to navigate the app draw. I have shortcuts for everything already. Actually only time I navigate the app draw is when I'm adding a shortcut lol. But I see what you saying. Maybe if they added volume up down or scrolling, but don't think that's how it works.
well... it would probably have worked better if she took them off..
