I have been following Skyrocket development from day one, and yet I am confused about the push for NFC in current ROMs.
How is everyone using NFC with their Skyrocket at the present time? Certainly I understand the potential future uses for NFC -retail, data, ect; but what functionality does it serve anyone now?
A quick example. I have a nfc tag sitting on my nightstand. At night when I go to bed I set my phone on the tag. It automatically turns my wifi off, turns my alarm on, and turns the night mode clock on. Its really neat stuff. Paying with NFC (which we can't do yet) is only scratching the surface when it comes to this technology. If your interested more Google search it. There is tons of stuff.

that's something I haven't thought of! cool example. Where do you get the tags? I assume you might then use a program similar to tasker with NFC support?
Funny story. Its actually a rewards tag for a gas station I frequently visit. You just scan the tag at checkout, I'm sure you've seen something like it before. I was just thinking about it one day and came to the conclusion that the tag had to be NFC. So I stuck it to my phone but the pre installed NFC app just kept force closing, so I downloaded one from the market and it worked. I can read and write to it no problem. however my wife has a similiar tag for a different store and I can read it but I cannot write to it as for blank tags just Google search "blank NFC tags".

What app are you using as well?
I was using sky ics at the time. There are a few roms that have it enabled. As for apps look at the screen shot from market. I've palyed with most of them. I haven't however purchased any blank tags. I think im gonna look into that

I'll chime in as well I'm on Alien rom and I got my nfc tags from http://tagsfordroid.com/tags/Home.html. NFC Task Launcher is a cool fairly cheap app that lets you do quite a number of tasks from a nfc tag. If you want to write just standard nfc tags then I like NFC TagWriter by NXP.

Dude, that is cool as hell! You've inspired me to try something like this out...
I keep meaning to build an NFC into my house lock so I can just scan my phone to open the door, never get around to it though.
Android beam is pretty cool too. If I'm looking at a webpage I just put the back of my phone and my wife's phone together wait for the prompt and touch the screen. It opens up either web page, you tube, whatever and then opens up what I was looking at

Just started using nfc on superlite 5.1, ordered 5 blanks from ebay for around 5$ i presume, you could probably get it cheaper from the US sellers.
I'm using NFC task launcher which works great and you can combine it with Tasker.
At the moment I have a tag attached to my car dock which automatically reduces brightness to 0(so my battery wont overheat while charging) and opens the GPS.
Only got my tags yesterday and downloaded the apps so I still got a lot to learn but so far it seems really useful.
I imagine to people with an office or those who use the phone for work stuff it can be even more useful for forcing a sync or almost anything you can think of at a certain place.

At the moment there doesn't seems to be way to do it in the app itself, you'll have to contact the developer. But when I used the phone on a tag when silent mode is on there was no noise, so maybe you can use tasker to silence it right before and enable sound right after.
To the other guy just buy them, I bought 5 from ebay for 5$ and at the moment got no use for 4 of them.

At the moment it only works for Toronto-GTA because I live here and wrote this for me.

Originally I planned on making a widget. But then after I got the notification going I didn't think there was much point to a widget. Since I don't need it taking real estate on my screen when I already know the price from the notification. And once there is a new price, another notification will be generated.

This site you list is different than the one for Toronto. The Toronto site shows only a single price since almost all stations in the area are the same price. But your site shows prices for each location.
What exactly would you want to be notified of?

I think an extension for the Navigation app that show's the gas prices based on your location. It's rare, but sometimes you can find cheaper gas in different parts of a city

I'm having little problem the application though. it waking up device(turn the display on) every couple of minutes. I have put TGPT is ignore list(Advance Task Killer) and using lock2.0
any suggestions?

Might be a problem with lock 2.0? Can you try uninstall lock 2.0 and see if the screen still wakes?
Also, TGPT doesn't do anything every couple minutes. Unless you have the debug to always notify and force update every 5 seconds. Even then I don't purposely wake the screen other than creating a notification and toast.
Yeah if go to origional lock it doesnot wakeup but see tgpt running in task manager which should not the case. I check price, kill the app, it starts again in a min also i get error when restart phone for force close tgpt app

crimsondr, I gotta say that I've been using this app close to since you released it, and it has been working great for me being a fellow Ontarian. I did come across one MINOR issue/bug that I never have before, only because the stars (and time) aligned it as such.
I had my Desire connected to my PC in Disk Drive mode, thereby disabling access to the SD card. TGPT tried to fire a scheduled update (once every 12 hours, which is great btw), but couldn't read it's DB from the SDcard, and threw up a Force Close error.
While it's not a huge issue because you have to have your phone in Disk Drive mode when TGPT performs an update, I just think it might be better to have the .db file on the Internal Memory of the device, especially as seeing how mine is currently 4kb in size. This should get around the exception when the SD card cannot be accessed, thereby keeping TGPT from throwing FCs.
Just thought you'd like to know since it's something that doesn't happen very often, but still does cause an issue!

Make sure you have Force update disabled in the settings. Other than that I don't know what is causing it and I do not have an x10a to test.

I ws reading in a thread here that you can get a samsung nexus s car dock to automatically startup car mode once I plug it into the car dock.
Was wondering
1- where do I purchase some nfc chips.
2- how do I set this up?

Car dock mode does not automatically start when put into the dock, this is because the S 4g does not have the magnetic sensor on the back of it.
To get the car dock to activate you will need to download this app:
NFC Task Launcher
and buy some NFC tags from any of these sites:
tagstand dot com
tagage dot net
Then just put the sticker on the back of the dock and configure a profile in the NFC task launcher app to open up car dock when you get close to that NFC sticker. You will not have to worry about your battery draining by having the phone next to the sticker for long periods of time because the phone will only read the tag once. It will only read it again if you move the phone away from the tag then close to it again, or if you turn off the screen and turn it back on.
Go to youtube and search: "NFC Task Launcher 2.4 - Demo"

I have a T-Mobile NS, and the Samsung car dock doesn't launch the car home app for me. I don't think it's just an issue with the 4g.
If you have Bluetooth in your car stereo you can have that connection start car home though, that's what I do.

Yes - only because there's no built in functionality for doing things like manipulating the hardware radios or starting an application directly from an NFC tag.
There are a few demo videos here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=980741 as well as a specific car dock demo (at the bottom of the first post).
You can download the app for free and if it's something you like / use it's up in the Market as well as a paid app. I do keep the free app updated though and it is not limited.

I like the OEM Dock - the use of a stiff rubber for the corners make it a solid fit without scratching the phone. It's a bit pricey compared to a universal dock, but it fits the phone well.

There are services that will give a US address to ship to and then post it world wide for you when they receive it. I don't know what they charge for this, but people were using this to get the Nexus One a while back.
Alternatively, if you really want to get the Samsung Dock I'd be willing to pm you my address and send it your way USPS if you're willing to cover the shipping on it . This, understandably, requires quite a bit of faith that I won't rip you off, but I figured I'd offer if you really want the OEM dock.

I tried Android beam by touch my One X with my GS2 and both reacted with vibration and sound. So, yes, NFC works.

I'm assuming NFC based data communication isn't universal. That'd be pretty messed up if someone could walk around with a phone and run into people in a heavy tourist area and have access to their personal information.
Android Beam has to be enabled to both devices (or the equivalent on whichever other device) in order to pass information back an forth. I've tested it with MiFARE 1k tags and the HOX works just fine.
There's a cool app that can read standard & non-standard NFC tags like the ones in credit cards and ones that stores use for loss prevention. It's called NFC ReTag on the Market (errr.. Play Store..w/e).
Others like NFC Reader/Writer by NXP are designed to work only with NFC tags that are NFC Forum compliant or of certain/most MiFARE types.
What's the range on the reader? I thought I read 10cm (4 inches) somewhere? I wonder if it'd be possible to get a wrist band with an nfc chip in it that would unlock the phone when you're holding it in your hand, but then require a pass-code if the wrist band isn't present. Could be a silicon band like people get for the various causes they support, or even integrated into a watch band (for the few people who still wear those!)
Another possibility would be a ring, that would definitely be in range of the reader I'd imagine), though I'm not big on rings myself...

Never tested NFC with an US passport ... but I think someone mentioned that the passport musst be open ... due to some shielding metal foil within the cover ...

I tried NFC Task Launcher and it's definitely a nice app, but with the switches you have to tap the tag twice. And the tags can only be read when the phone is unlocked. Hoping a chef can fix this in a custom rom.

Yeah, good point. I don't have my sleeve anymore though. I've tried a half dozen apps with no luck. I'm beginning to think my NFC module is broken though. I even tried the wife's passport. Any advice?

Well, I got a glimmer of hope. I was able to read a tag in my library book. That's the only thing it's read so far, but I don't think my credit cards have chips afterall. Not sure what the problem is with the passport though =\

To use Android Beam, you have to have the app open from which you wish to share information. Bring the phones together and tap the screen. There's no way you could ninja someone's data without them knowing, as they have to push it to you, rather than you pulling it from them.
EDIT: Oh, and yes NFC works fine for me, at least to push contacts via AndroidBeam.

As long as you don't go around letting people touch your phone to their phone you should be fine... NFC literally needs to be right up against another.
Or just keep NFC off it you don't trust it.
This is such a farce. This is how NFC works - the radio is activated and an action is taken. The worst they could probably do is send you to a page where you *could* download something malicious if you were ignorant in what you were looking at. I can see how scanning an NFC tag could force a download depending on the URL provided but I don't believe there is any way that this action will install something without the user's knowledge. You might as well say that you can "hack" Android via the Internet because in his example, he used NFC to prompt the phone to go to a particular webpage.

Right, when I've played with NFC, the tag has to be close enough to almost touch (with millimeters) before the phone reads the tag. And the way NFC normally works when I've used it, the phone has to be screen on, and off the lockscreen. Unless there is some way around this?

Tags on AndyTags are little bit pricier, but if you want something with a cool Android logo on black background, then you might wanna check the Topaz 512 Tags (as well as NTAG203 tags) available here: http://www.andytags.com/ntag203-nfc-tags.html

Just bought them in soft PVC. I figured for a buck more, it would be worth the extra durability.

Just to update, I received my order yesterday and they work great! Quality is impressive, and I was happy to see they use 3M adhesive.
Now, to come up with some cool ways to use them One idea I have in mind, is opening up my ultrabook and sticking one in the space beside the trackpad (doing it internally, not to affect the aesthetics of my new rig ), so I can tap my phone to initiate an ad-hoc connection to wirelessly transfer files. Not sure exactly how to execute this idea (or if it's even possible, both technically or without causing interference), but I'm going to look into it.

I always want to get some tags, but I don't have a car and always have my data connection on, so...what else could i use it for?

Plenty of things to do with it. From inducting night mode when you put your phone on the night stand next to your bed, to launching apps on your phone when near. My current task is set my phone to wake up with hoovering my hand over it when I'm on my bicycle. to define 'on the bicycle' you would have to stick the tag to the bottom of the mobile pouch for bikes ...

That's great to hear!
It's a neat idea to integrate a NFC tag below plastics or other non-conductive surfaces. Let us know how we can help with your project and since you do have an ultrabook the material may likely be metal. Not all metals will allow the signal to pass through so be aware of this.

Pair a bluetooth device, use it in your business cards, serve an advertisement with NFC targets, set it to call your mom, have one that texts your girlfriend that you're not available tonight, make a task that tells your wifi thermostat to turn off the A/C, set one to send a Wake On Lan command to your computer, etc... The possibilities are endless but we don't want to keep telling you that. It would be nice to see what kind of cool ideas you guys have come up with.

Question can the tags toggle? If I tap it, it'll do something, if I tap it again it'll undo what it did or do I need two tags now?

Nope. You only need one tag. Toggling is entirely something you set up.
How is the business card idea working?
Also, something useful for me would be after touching one tag next to the door, to arm my ip camera, through the application that I have at my phone. Would this be possible?
Also, is there any site with normal round tags, with low price and shipping for European countries?

It works great for me but it does cost a lot more to give out business cards with the tags on it but I think it makes a good impression. I'm not sure about the IP camera thing though. I know it can be done but I don't even know what IP camera you use.
Also what's the difference between the round tags and square tags? Is there any performance difference? I find that the square ones read a lot faster than the circle ones I've ordered on eBay. It's seems to be a bit more responsive but it may just be the difference between Tagger's quality vs. eBay. I also ordered some on AliExpress but they were complete junk.
