[Q] Trigger Water Damage Indicator... but no water damage? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Reading a thread here on XDA, I decided to look at my water damage indicator out of curiosity.
To my surprise, the water damage indicator had been triggered... well, only half of it has been triggered. I've never thrown it in water. It's never come in contact with water at all.... although, I do keep it in my pocket and the temperature around here is humid as all hell. The phone works fine, hell, there's nothing wrong with this phone. I'm just trying to rack my brain thinking what could have triggered it.
Is there anything I can do? Am I out of warranty? Are there more water damage indicators inside the phone that would prove this phone has not been water damaged? Does HTC have the same water damage policy like Apple? (where Apple will inspect the device a second time to find out if the indicator was falsely triggered)

Probably from moisture in the air.
Do you have it in the bathroom while you take showers? Because that could cause it.

When you take hot showers, leave your phone out of the bathroom. That will trigger it
Sent from my HTC One XL using xda app-developers app

I've seen this before, where several XDA users on past HTC devices reported the stickers changed colors, despite no known exposure to moisture. As mentioned, even highly humid environments may trigger the stickers to change. But I bet its possible that some stickers are defective altogether, and turn pink for no reason.
Not sure how AT&T deals with the stickers, if you go through them. But other folks on these forums report that HTC is pretty fascist about the stickers. If its pink, they will deny your warranty and send the phone back to you. They don't do any "secondary" inspections that I know of.

Hmm, while I don't take my phone into the showers, I do encounter similar environments with conditions like a hot bathroom. (Think kitchen and freezers, etc.)
Is there anything I can do? Am I screwed out of a warranty? Should I bleach the sticker?

If there is nothing wrong with the phone, don't mess with it. Sticking bleach in your phone is going to be worse than just some sticker being pink.
Plus, HTC always puts multiple moisture sensors in their phones. So you're not going to be able to get to all of them unless you take the phone apart. Again, you're likely to just do more damage than good.
If for some reason, you need to return your phone for repair, then maybe worry about it. Otherwise, if its not broke, don't fix it.

Not to bring back a dead thread, but my internal mic stopped working on my phone, and I took a look at the water damage sensor, the same thing had happened, half of it was red the other half white. My phone has NEVER been exposed to water, but it is possible that standard California moisture is to blame. AT&T would have denied my warranty claim because the sticker is pink, so I simply scratched off the sticker and replaced with a white label the same size and got it swapped out.

I couldn't find the water damage sticker on my HTC one X. Where it is supposed to be? I've looked at the SIM slot and there is nothing there. My phone has been to HTC repair once, is it possible that they took it out for any reason?

I think some has mentioned that there may be one inside the headphone jack. As I mentioned above, HTC typically installs multiple stickers, and they are not always in the same locations (even for the same model phone). There are probably also stickers inside that you can't see unless you take the phone apart.

Water Detection Sticker voids warranties

As you know Cell phones and PDA's are precious pieces of electronics. They cost a lot of money and they can be fragile. What you may not know, is that cell phones companies have a very clever way of knowing what you have done with your cell phone. It's the water detection sticker. Inside you phone you will find a small white sticker that will change color if it comes in contact with water. The only problem, if there is to much humidity near your phone, it will change anyway. Google it and you will find a bunch of angry consumers that got there warranties voided because of it.
And I am one of them. I will bet you guys, that my next phone will get a special treatment so the stickers dont change color.
Can you please take a closer photo of the sticker? The stickers generally comes with some pink crosses on it which are genberally there when the pink dye has not been activated by water/moisture.
The reason for the markings is that some people will bleach the sticker to remove the pink dye to circumvent the voided warranty situation. By having the pink crosses its obvious when that is done.
Wish I could send you a better picture but I have sent my Touch for repair. There for, I have no device on hand. But When I went to see the manufacturer, he showed me a good sticker, and there ware no lines. Just a white sticker.
I wonder if I could coat it with a spay or something to seal-it with out activating the paper ???

Questionable post dude, aint gonna preach on the moral issues of this stuff to get past the pink sticker issue but tbh if there is enough moisture to turn the sticker pink then there is enough in the air to possibly cause problems with the device, its not something put in to get out of fixing a device dude.
Mine is now solid red, I too have the Vogue, but it never got wet!
I think when I wiped it down the sticker went red, good idea, but very poor planning on their part.
Mine is red solid also and I never even touched (But yes I live in a very humidity place)
A lot of the time it happens if you leave your phone in the bathroom when you take a shower... Lots of people do it, including me. **** warranties, never needed one till now.
(Plus the Fuze didn't even have a warranty) :\
My phone has pink/reddish cross lines on the sticker. Does this mean it is showing moisture or does the sticker turn solid red when this happens?
A tale of two waves
I'm in Cocoa Beach Florida this week on my annual vacation. I was making a pretty awesome-looking skull sand sculpture and had my phone (AT&T Tilt (Kaiser)) laying on the sand about 20 feet higher than any wave had been in hours. Should be safe there I thought.
A rogue wave came in and completely washed over my phone before I could get to it. I quickly pulled off the protective case, yanked the battery, opened up the keyboard and placed it to dry about twenty feet further up the beach where my wife was tanning. A few minutes later another HUGE wave came in and gave it (and my wife )another good rinse.
I dried it all as best I could for a day, then tried it. I had a couple of the buttons that weren't working, the speaker was intermittant, but otherwise it all worked. The next morning it quit altogether, gave a red light only and wouldn't come on.
I went to harbor freight tools and bought a small yellow precision kit that had a T-6 Torx bit and a philips 00, tool it apart, submerged and washed every piece (except for the battery) in a cup filled with denatured alcohol (this immediately changed every moisture label red btw). I used the LCD replacement instructions and service manual both found on this site.
I allowed all parts to dry for about an hour and reassembled. Surprisingly enough, it all worked! My touch screen actually seems more sensitive and accurate.
I hope this helps someone else who finds themselves looking at forking over $$$ for a moment of stupidity.

I also wanted to point out that I didn't submerge my touchscreen portion. I don't know how it would fare and don't want someone to think that it had worked for me.
In fact, I wouldn't recommend anyone attempt to take their phone apart without nimble fingers, ample patience, and experience working with micro-electronics.
Let me know if you had any similar experiences!

water damage?

I got the tb on 3-28-11. From day 1 it has been in a protective case and has a screen cover. Today I took it out of the case and got in the phone for the SD card. When I pulled the battery out I noticed a white sticker on the battery with small d'a thru it. Then to the left while looking on the back on the left side I see a small black sticker with a white word saying void.
My question is does this mean it has water damage? I'm not sure how that's possible because I have kept it excellent condition. I have not once had the phone near water and pretty much treated this phone like gold.
Am I just reading it wrong or is there damage? I have not had any problems with the phone but I'm concerned.

Did you buy it from Verizon or best buy?
I'm pretty sure the void sticker is covering a screw that must be removed to open the case. Hence if you open the case this void sticker will be gone and Verizon won't honor your warranty.
Edit: there should be a white sticker with a red dot or line that will bleed and turn pinkish if there is water damage

When I worked selling phones we used to use stickers like that to tell if there was water damage and sometimes they would be activated inadvertantly by customers who would take their phones into the bathroom, close the door, not have a window or fan on, and take a very hot, steamy shower. Mind you though, these were POS flip/candybar phones at the time, nothing as sophisticated as a Thunderbolt.
I bought the phone from a Verizon store in fenton Missouri. I am 99% sure it was a corporate store. I searched the back of the phone and there is no other sticker. The only one seen was on the battery.
As far as the steam in the shower the phone has not entered the bathroom once with me. I know what the white sticker would look like cause I've seen it on the back of other phones I had but not this one.
This is puzzling me and I don't want an issue exchanging this phone out in the future I have a true malfunctioning issue.
Hmm usually the sticker turns red on the battery when activated by water the void sticker is covering a screw to get to it you must tear this sticker showing you have tamper with the phone. In my opinion the phone should be fine you can buy a new battery if your worried.

This is true. The sticker you see is for unauthorized disassembly.
There is another indicator for water.
Kk just double checking. I've had great phones in the past but this is the first time I spent this much money on a phone. Maybe I'm just being paranoid just wanna double check just in case. But other than that I love this phone.
U don't have water damage. That's how the strickers look on the TB. The comment about the void sticker is right. Verizon uses that to make sure the casing of the phone wasn't opened.

This is the easiest void sticker though I've seen to remove its not recessed like most. If you ever need to get into the phone the sticker is easily removed with a safety pin and care and replaced just as easy.

I'm in some serious trouble!!! My screen stopped working!!

Hey guys,
I was at work playing a mkv file in my car then I cool myself off by dripping water on me and I accidentally drip a little bit on the screen I suddenly notice my screen lowering the volume by itself and I quickly dried it off. Afterwards, I notice the screen brightest on the left side (facing up) started flickering I immediately knew there was going to be serious issues. I turned off the phone, checked the casing for any drippings and found no water drips inside the casing. I turned on the phone to find a quick pixelated screen for a quick season then booted to the HTC theme..
The phone booted to the home screen that's when the screen started to flicker similar to a computer's VGA, DVI or HDMI cable is loose in the back every pixel color on the screen starts flashing in colors. The screen turned pink then stopped working..
Here's the good news: I'm covered with tmobiles premium insurance and HTC's insurance...
Here's the bad news: I s-off, rooted and flashed a rom 12hrs ago..
Technically speaking, I'm screwed because I can't get the screen to function to revert back the changes and Idk what to do.. If you've any thoughts or ideas to help me fix this issue please I'll gladly appreciate.
There is 2 real options.
One is repair the screen all though somehow I don't think the water has caused the problem, modern mobile devices can usually withstand a small amount of water including light rain and maybe a light splash of liquid. They are all tested for this kind of thing. It sounds like something physical as I'm fairly sure it wont be the ROM to blame, so by this you should be able to claim on the insurance as its a physical defect and would of happened regardless of flashing etc. I can't be sure how successful you'll be with this though, its probably best to go to the HTC insurance for this as tmobile with blow it off as quick as possible.
The other option is not advised and is classed as insurance fraud which is highly illegal there for won't be putting it down in writing due to not wanting to upset the admins, mods and rules of the forum. But I'm sure you all know what the procedure is.
Hope this helps though bud. Good luck.
After fully inspecting the case and the phone itself.. I just realized the little drip of water could've made its way inside the phone small gap after noticing something white stuck in there..
I gotta have the idea that if the screen doesn't work then they can't see what's inside it right? lol.. I'm going to discharge the phone and let it dry then pray it works so I can revert the changes then make a claim.

Check your insurance policy, accidental damage might be covered. Surely they can't make all claims void if the device software has been modified. In my eyes HTC actively encourages it.

HTC won't blow me off despite it being rooted and having a different rom? I know tmobile would blow me off if they found out I rooted the damn thing.. Maybe idk honestly.. I could smash it to pieces and say I dropped in a 3 story building still be covered (I asked this question before purchasing the insurance haha)..

The best option is probably let the device dry off. Reboot it in a few hours, assess the damage if any, if its fixable or fine go for that, if its beyond fixing then take it as far as you see fit mate
Try drying your phone out on a windowsill or somewhere else warm, with the back case off and the battery out for a few hours, then give the phone a try again.
If that doesnt work then I suggest following RoganTheTwat's advice! You should be ok with the root situation...

Thanks RoganTheTwat,
I'm definitely going to do that and if not then claim it with tmobile or HTC! I hope I get more opinions and knowledge like yours.
If nothing helps,DO NOT drive over it, and DO NOT claim accidental damage. If you do, you would commit fraud and would take minuscule amount of money from their HUGE profits, which they get by ripping off customers. So DO NOT do anything like that mate.
I would say Take battery off and the cover then try to keep the phone in a warm dry environment
very important to keep battery out and phone off since there is a sign of possible water damage.
the drying part you can keep it in a zip lock bag of rice it will help absorbing moisture and water.
or "Carefully with this one" wrap it up with cotton cloth and apply Warm air by a hair dryer( Do NOT set it on HOT ) apply it randomly don't constraint on one area and make sure you keep distant.
let me how that work Good Luck

This was accidental damage I didn't purposely pour drips of water onto my phone because I wanted to know what will happen. There's no fraud under tmobile's policy if I claim it to be accidental or anything else.. I'm paying $7mo for premium insurance.

Finally, someone with some sense...Moisture will get into that thing like its no ones business if you let it.
If the rice doesnt work, try something stronger. You can get stuff at the grocery store that is meant for drying out moist rooms. I use it to keep the bathroom dry.

Did i accidentally void my warranty?

I have my HTC Titan with me for awhile. Last week, while i was demo-ing some stuffs about my Titan, i opened the backcover and showed my friends what it is inside. Then somehow , a single drop of water from a cup that i was drinking, dropped down to the "White Paper" (The paper that they change to red when water goes over them) and turned it into red.
Physically, HTC will use it to say that i dropped my phone into water (which i did not , just a small drop of water to that spot). So... anyone here, has been in this problem, please tell me if i just have lost my warranty.
shucks
ya I guess officially the warranty is void....unless you go to the service centre early enough and let them know what happened. From what I know there are three such papers in samsung phones to detect water damage.....the drop of water would have probably only changed the one most superficial.....try....there is nothing more to lose i guess

You need to explain it to them tactfully u know . Sometime it works.:good:
Well... it is not total red yet (Some white mark still on it , lmao )
But, technically, if that thing turn red, they void the warranty, is that right?
Yes...Most of the companies dont cover water damages since its a user-made damage
but i think you can continue the warranty if the problem is something that the manufactuer is responsible about it like system failure, bad components ETC.
and when there is water damage caused to the phone there is a corrosion inside the phone so they will see that there is no water involved in the phone defection

Dunno if there is anything like that, but logically if you explain to them what happened and they can see that the phone is still in perfect working order, they might believe you and somehow sort it out (probably by replacing that bit of paper or something).

water damage stickers?

Hey Guys,
I've searched the forum to no avail and was wondering if anyone knew where all the water damage stickers on the phone are located. I know there's one behind the battery and one on the battery itself. Are there any others I can see for myself?
I'm asking because I seem to have damaged my phone while applying a wet skin protector. After applying it my speaker has been popping and crackling more than a box of rice crispies. However those 2 water damage stickers have not been tripped (or i don't think they have -- still show red x's and no bleeding). Thankfully I have insurance and was wondering if I should take it to a verizon store and have them examine it or if I should just go directly through Asurion.
It's been 2 days now and the problem has persisted -- do you think the old rice treatment will help at all at this point? Thanks for your input, love the forums and the community.

Rice treatment will probably not work. And if the placement are anything similar to how Apple does it, than they put the water stickers on top of screws inside the phone on the mother board.
