Did i accidentally void my warranty? - General Questions and Answers

I have my HTC Titan with me for awhile. Last week, while i was demo-ing some stuffs about my Titan, i opened the backcover and showed my friends what it is inside. Then somehow , a single drop of water from a cup that i was drinking, dropped down to the "White Paper" (The paper that they change to red when water goes over them) and turned it into red.
Physically, HTC will use it to say that i dropped my phone into water (which i did not , just a small drop of water to that spot). So... anyone here, has been in this problem, please tell me if i just have lost my warranty.

shucks
ya I guess officially the warranty is void....unless you go to the service centre early enough and let them know what happened. From what I know there are three such papers in samsung phones to detect water damage.....the drop of water would have probably only changed the one most superficial.....try....there is nothing more to lose i guess

You need to explain it to them tactfully u know . Sometime it works.:good:

Well... it is not total red yet (Some white mark still on it , lmao )
But, technically, if that thing turn red, they void the warranty, is that right?

Yes...Most of the companies dont cover water damages since its a user-made damage
but i think you can continue the warranty if the problem is something that the manufactuer is responsible about it like system failure, bad components ETC.
and when there is water damage caused to the phone there is a corrosion inside the phone so they will see that there is no water involved in the phone defection

Well... but could it be another paper like that on the mainboard, inside the phone that we can't see it from the outside?
But can they tell if the motherboard has not been "swimming" in the water?

Dunno if there is anything like that, but logically if you explain to them what happened and they can see that the phone is still in perfect working order, they might believe you and somehow sort it out (probably by replacing that bit of paper or something).

water damage query...

hi,
i was wondering if you could void your water damage your phone even if you havent dropped it into water? Sorry about the stupid question, but i take good care of my kaiser too and next week will be sending it back to warranty and just read that someone's phone had been rejected for warranty as their sticker was water marked (? something like that). Obviously you'd know if you've dropped your phone into water, but is it possible for a phone to be water damaged without being immersed in water?
Sorry if the q is really stupid :S
Yes it bloody well is possible to get "water ingress" without being immersed!
My Magic developed a fault where it wouldn't turn on but showed a blue LED (orange when plugged on USB). I sent it off to HTC's service centre and it took them a week to diagnose it. They said that there was water damage and that I would have to pay £277 for a new motherboard, new LCM and new casing!!!!
I took exception to this and said that I did NOT authorise all those repairs and only give authority for the motherboard. They wouldn't do it and just kept telling me that it's either £277 for the full repair or under £20 to send it back. What really pisses me off is that there is a water sensitive sticker on the picture they sent me and it's WHITE (ie. no water present).
What also pisses me off is that I paid LESS than that on eBay for it a couple of months ago.
I'm tempted to ask for it back, smash the screen and put a claim on my house insurance.

[Q] How many water sensors are on the HTC sensation?

Hi I bought this faulty phone ... HTC sensation.. I'm looking behind the battery and the water sensor sticker is gone.. It's still under warranty but I don't want to send it in for repair and it turns out to be water damaged .. Their prices kill.. Even if I don't want to fix it theyll ccharge 35$ just for diagnosis .. So I'm just wondering if someone knows how to check if it's water damaged without the sticker behind the battery.. I just want to make sure it isn't before I send it in.. Any help is much appreciated! Thanks!

I didn't even knew they put such things on phone. I just popped my battery but can't see anything there that it could be. What would it look like ?
The past phones, that either my children or I have dropped in water or put through the washing machine, have always had water visible under the screen.
It looks like a white sticker, nothing special. As far as I know, every phone should have 3 in total. On the battery (close to the connections), under the battery (right below the battery connector and its a circle here) and there should be one inside the actual phone, close to a flex cable or something.
LOL,
Well you live and learn.
I played with the white sticker on the battery and made it go pink, just to see what'd happen ;-))
Thanks useful info, just in case.
yeah, they turn red/pink when get wet, dont try that at home because you will void your waranty. Use a old phone if you are interested, I know I lost my warranty ages ago on my K800i.

[Q] Trigger Water Damage Indicator... but no water damage?

Reading a thread here on XDA, I decided to look at my water damage indicator out of curiosity.
To my surprise, the water damage indicator had been triggered... well, only half of it has been triggered. I've never thrown it in water. It's never come in contact with water at all.... although, I do keep it in my pocket and the temperature around here is humid as all hell. The phone works fine, hell, there's nothing wrong with this phone. I'm just trying to rack my brain thinking what could have triggered it.
Is there anything I can do? Am I out of warranty? Are there more water damage indicators inside the phone that would prove this phone has not been water damaged? Does HTC have the same water damage policy like Apple? (where Apple will inspect the device a second time to find out if the indicator was falsely triggered)
Probably from moisture in the air.
Do you have it in the bathroom while you take showers? Because that could cause it.
Sent from my HTC One XL
When you take hot showers, leave your phone out of the bathroom. That will trigger it

I've seen this before, where several XDA users on past HTC devices reported the stickers changed colors, despite no known exposure to moisture. As mentioned, even highly humid environments may trigger the stickers to change. But I bet its possible that some stickers are defective altogether, and turn pink for no reason.
Not sure how AT&T deals with the stickers, if you go through them. But other folks on these forums report that HTC is pretty fascist about the stickers. If its pink, they will deny your warranty and send the phone back to you. They don't do any "secondary" inspections that I know of.

Hmm, while I don't take my phone into the showers, I do encounter similar environments with conditions like a hot bathroom. (Think kitchen and freezers, etc.)
Is there anything I can do? Am I screwed out of a warranty? Should I bleach the sticker?

If there is nothing wrong with the phone, don't mess with it. Sticking bleach in your phone is going to be worse than just some sticker being pink.
Plus, HTC always puts multiple moisture sensors in their phones. So you're not going to be able to get to all of them unless you take the phone apart. Again, you're likely to just do more damage than good.
If for some reason, you need to return your phone for repair, then maybe worry about it. Otherwise, if its not broke, don't fix it.
Not to bring back a dead thread, but my internal mic stopped working on my phone, and I took a look at the water damage sensor, the same thing had happened, half of it was red the other half white. My phone has NEVER been exposed to water, but it is possible that standard California moisture is to blame. AT&T would have denied my warranty claim because the sticker is pink, so I simply scratched off the sticker and replaced with a white label the same size and got it swapped out.
I couldn't find the water damage sticker on my HTC one X. Where it is supposed to be? I've looked at the SIM slot and there is nothing there. My phone has been to HTC repair once, is it possible that they took it out for any reason?

I think some has mentioned that there may be one inside the headphone jack. As I mentioned above, HTC typically installs multiple stickers, and they are not always in the same locations (even for the same model phone). There are probably also stickers inside that you can't see unless you take the phone apart.

[Q] Dropped In Water

I dropped my A2 into a bowl of water amd now have the red dot of death (moisture indicator)....dried out in bag of rice and now seems that the screen is shading lighter in spots, like streaking. Would Moto take phone back with moisture damage? Moto knows I was rooted because of signing up for the soak test.I do have insurance on phone, but, it's $125.00 to replace it. Just looking for some cheaper alternatives if anybody has an idea. Thanks
body glove cover
with the cover from "body glove" made it 2 minutes in hot tub.
Not the smartest but kept all moisture out.

If you can fry the motherboard, and open a warranty service ticket through Moto, you can send it back to them. The will ask that you remove the battery (which has its own water sensitive sticker on it), the sd card, the SIM, and the back cover plate, and send to them. I actually removed the sticker under the battery, where the serial number is found, after hooking my A2's motherboard up to a car battery. They replaced it in less than a week. All this assumes you're still within the 1 year manufacturer warranty.

This doesn't help the OP, nor does it address the concerns. If you're going to post something, make sure it's a useful post -not something that's just dribble (No pun intended).

It's no more fraudulent than purposefully flashing to perma-hard brick the device. Nobody asked anyone to agree or approve. Trust me, after you've had to deal with your new A2 after a while, you'll have no qualms in screwing Motorola if needed. A warranty is a warranty, if it doesn't power on, how it got there is inconsequential. I never stated I filed a claim through insurance for a new phone, that would have perhaps been the only way I could see something categorically considered as 'fraud'.
"@OP: your SOL. Water damage voids ALL warranties." So does rooting...

Ok, enough nonsense about "perma-bricking" etc.
I think most people, have rooted, bricked their device, tried installing some stock rom to screw it up enough so they can get warranty.
But, XDA is not a place to discuss how to "pull one over" on manufacturers. We can leave it up to the owner to decide.
So you guys give it a rest.
So you dropped it in the water. Suck it up, and own up to it.

[Q] Does removing back and/or disassembling Nexus 5 void Google Warranty?

My phone was briefly dropped in water. I quickly dried it off, and powered down the device. After letting it sit in rice for a day or so, I powered it back on. It boots up just fine, but the touch screen does not work properly. I can't even get past my pattern lock screen, because the touch screen does not sense all the places my finger goes. I am considering two things. 1 - going the RMA process and returning the phone to Google for another one. I'm sure somewhere along the way they'll discover that the phone got wet, and I'll be screwed. 2 - I've read online that you can disassemble the phone, and put rubbing alcohol on it, and blow dry it and fix the water damage.
My question is. Will removing the back, and trying to fix the device myself void the warranty. I would love to get the device working on my own, but also fear voiding out any possibility to use the warranty in the future. Or if I can't fix it on my own, I'd like the warranty/RMA rout to fall back on
Any help, or experience with this is much appreciated! Thank you!

You dropped it in water. You already voided your warranty. Opening the back and trying to fix it yourself really doesn't matter at this point does it. If you manage to use rubbing alcohol and through some magic of chemistry reset the sensor and return the device for RMA all you've managed to do is commit fraud. Be a man and accept responsibility for your actions instead of expecting Google to pay for your mistake.
This thread should be locked before I can't contain myself as nicely as poster above me.

Not true. The warranty doesn't cover water damage but the warranty is still intact so long as you don't try and repair it yourself
To the OP - just claim on insurance or buy a new one. You're not gonna fool Google by trying to cover it up
Doesn't anyone get insurance? Mine is against damage, loss, theft, drops, water, whatever.

That makes no sense. If the device is subjected to things not covered by the warranty, it is null and void at that point.
Same with opening the the device and perfectly putting it back together. They may never know it was opened and probably will still honor the warranty for other claims later down the road however. Water damage isn't covered by warranty as you mentioned but that doesn't mean you have a warranty anymore either. The microphone could stop working tomorrow and it wouldn't be covered by warranty because of previous water damage.

Not true. Say someone dropped it and the screen cracked. This isn't covered by the warranty but if the microphone went this would be covered unless it can be proven that the drop damaged the mic. OK, in this instance the water has killed the phone but the warranty isn't technically void in its entirety

Perhaps. Google MAY cover things clearly not affected by or caused by water. Something like the button rattle. However currently Google replaces the phone with a new one, not refurbished (at least according to the rep I spoke with).. They will NOT do that with a phone that has water damage. This would open the door for people to drop their phone in water and then get a new one claiming button rattle.
The OP is clearly having issues related to water damage and is therefore not covered under warranty.
To the OP, I would suggest leaving it in rice for several more days and trying again. Sometimes more time is required. Sometimes it doesn't help at all.
@joeman55 - if you paid for the phone using a credit card (that provides accidental damage warranty), you may want to go that route.
I wish. I just paid for it using my debit card. I think for now, I will let it sit in rice for a few more days. Then, if that's still not working, go the RMA route. I had a friend who did that, and it worked out for him.
I see, one guy has no honor, but he's your friend.
So its OK.
Things perpetuate if no one makes a stand to do different.
It's clear, the change won't start with either of you two.
