i've owned more touch screen phones than I can count. None of them ended up with broken screens. My first sk4g screen cracked in my empty pocket and my second ones screen went complete fuzzy while browsing never to work again. The screen clearly isn't mean to last.

So, get a new phone that is built to last and learn to count higher.

This is easily the biggest waste of server space I have ever seen.

Wow, I lol'd
I was rather dissappointed when I learned this phone would not include Gorilla Glass or even any type of fancy glass so as to protect it from breaking.
That being said, however, it's not difficult to purchase a case/protector on Amazon. Hell, I just bought 4 for less than $30.

I think this posted thread is completely useless, and could have easily just been a unwanted, uncared for and opinionative comment on a post that definitly already exists.
I also think the post should be moderated and removed.
As for your phone, either you have bad luck or need to care for your belongings better.

100% agree. Just FYI, the moderators don't always watch every thread. Next time, instead of responding, just report the thread.

Where do people get the idea that gorilla glass is indestructible? If you apply focused pressure on a small area, it will indeed break. It is not magical.

my LCD screen cracked while in my pocket!

I bought my HTC S710 just 5 months ago, and my LCD screen cracked while in my pocket!
Did anyone has such a problem?
Is this problem common with this phone?
Do you know if warranty is valid for this damage?
Not a common problem, seems like you would have put too much pressure on it or bumped it against something. I've sat on mine after forgetting it's in my back-pocket, but I keep the LCD inwards and have had no problems.
You probably won't get it warrantied, but it's worth a shot.
@beijmanli wtf!
@SAHILISTHEBEST yeah your device needs to go for service.
and no its not common, i have dropped my device couple of times but not a single scratch yet. I have a scratch guard film on the screen.
yes, i've found in other forums also that this has now become a common problem for VOX and many users have complained about this matter. I think that since this is a manufacturer's technical defect and the Company should take the matter into consideration as this damage is caused not due to mishandling. the below mentioned url proves the same:
http://www.htcwiki.com/thread/1120701/HTC+S710+-+LCD+SCREEN+CRACKES?t=anon
Had the same thing happen to me, basically my fault (screen turned out)
If you have it in your pocket, turn the screen inward and you have a lot less problems
Yes the display is a bit touchier because its so big. (for a phone) its up to the user to be carefull I doubt you'll get it serviced free, although the trend to "not my fault, all your fault" is clear

I felt amazing when i saw that no physical damage is caused to the housing or any other part. The screen cracked by itself within the housing.
It seems there is some problem with the internal structure of the phone. It cant resist too much pressure i guess.
Hope HTC manufacturers understand this problem soon.
Well in my case it was just a bit too much pressure on the center of the screen, this can happen easily, by hitting the corner of a table for example. You wouldn't see an effect on the housing sind your pants would stop any scratches etc.
Lesson is: Always put the phone with the display to your leg/arse/whatever, just don't let it face outward.

thanks Voxer,
The manual was really cool n helpful.
I called the HTC Authorised service executive in India n told him the problem. I told them that since the damage was not due to mishandling and my screen broke by itself. they exaxmined my mobile and after makingsome more calls to some of HTC officials, they agreed for the screen replacement of my phone and allowed me a discount of 40% on the new screen.

[Q] Removing dust under the screen

Got another One X last weekend. I checked the screen thoroughly in store to make sure it was flawless. I have now however noticed that there is a spec of dust under the screen. It was definitely not there when I checked it in store, spent ages on a solid white background making sure.
So is there anyway I can try and get rid of it. It got there on its own somehow so I must at least be able to move it off the side of the screen one way or another. It's no big deal if I can't get rid of it as its hardly noticeable in every day use.
I have tried gently tapping the screen and knocking it on its side but it hasn't moved so far. I don't want to try to hard encase I damage the phone. Don't want to try and take the phone apart and attempt to separate the touch component from the LCD and try either as the phone is so new.
Att will exchange for dust under the screen. But. When the phones been on and in use allowing the screen to get warm about 30 minutes lightly tap in the opposite direction. Should move the dust out.
Work on my iPhone back in the day. :/

Thanks for the reply's. I'm in Australia so now ATnT for me. This is my 9th. Very happy with this one. Won't be returning it for this unless more gets under there. I must be able to move it. I'll try leaving it on max brightness as you suggested and go from there.
It must be possible to separate the digitizer from the LCD because you can buy a replacement -

Um not to be a complete **** but after working retail for 6 years as a store manager for At&t and several years in I.T / EE / and project management. The chances of you running into 9 defects of a single model and brand new replacements are are probably slimmer than you getting struck by lightning and winning the lottery together. My first had dead pixels and a yellow spot. Second had creaking and a rattle. 3rd dent in the lcd panel under the digitizer. The next 5 I unboxed in store. Some had dead pixels and the others had bad dust under the screen.
I didn't tell them were the dust or pixels were, just that there was something wrong with the screen, they pointed them out. The dust under this one is nothing like the ones I unboxed in store a while back, some specs were almost as big as the dot on the letter i which is why I'm going to stick with this one.
I don't think it's to much to ask to get one without dust under the screen seeing as how there are many out there with defect free phones. I feel like I am entitled to the same experience as them, paid the same hard earned money as them after all.. I suspect though that many probably have dust etc but have either not noticed or choose to live with it.
Your right about the phone being extraordinary, which is why I haven't stuck with a refund. Really no going back after you have had a phone like this.
Edit: check this forum out. I'm not the only one with issues and multiple returns. It's a shame so many are having repeat issues.

LOL
This guy worked in retail & engineering and the bases of his argument is the fact he thinks dust and imperfections are ludicris for someone to complain about! Now if he worked at the HTC manufacturing plant where they made these phones and can honestly produce manufacturing data depicting margins of error of defect in the manufacture of these devices in several respective categories then we can break the odds down mathematically and prove whether this poster is full of $hit, delusional etc!
Until then I'll keep lolling @ the response It was good
He's got a point... Say the odds of you getting a messed up screen is 1 in 1000... Multiply .001 by itself 9 times. Those are the odds of you actually getting 9 broken phones in a row.
Edit... It's 1x10^-27.... So yeah, you'd win the lottery a couple of times.

Nope, never seen this before -- I do have some "fluid-like" sheen when ushing on the screen with some force (especially on lighter backgrounds), but that can only be seen with the unit turned on.
Off-topic: I would like to request you to not double-post. It is generally frowned upon -- not only because it clutters the forum but since it splits up the answers to your question in two different places. That makes it harder to see what has been taken up and what is let to b answered and/or amended. Just ask once, and if we know the answer or can help out in some other fashion, we'll get in here. that definitely looks like a warranty covered issue, i'd guess that there's a bad adhesive seal between the screen layers.

I wouldn't count on it, since the 'stickiness' is probably due to electrostatic charge. You might try wiping the screen with a damp cloth -- that fixed it on older monitor I had -- but if there is a separate layer underneath (which is entirely possible, and even probable, in nowadays' displays) you're basically scre*ed.
Judging from your location, a little dust might be expected, but two weeks is a little too fast. Obviously, there's an opening somewhere. You might want to try and find it, and shut it.

Wow, yo useem to be irritated fairly easily, my friend. Nowhere do you read any mocking, except for what you want to read into.
1) I do not know if the TF700's display is a layered display, so I do not know if there's only a glass layer to take into account (you could open it up and clean it yourself, if you're handy) or a base layer of some poymer which would retain dust particles probably beyond your (or my, before you feel "mocked again") capacity to clean it.
2) Since you (or I, before you feel "mocked again") do not know what "underneath" means in the physical sense -- see point 1 -- this is a too vague statement.
3) It states "Johannesburg" in your avatar space -- while it is not the Sahara, I would think it is more dusty than where, say, I live. Don't feel mocked again, though.
Again, before you accuse me, at least make sure you have an adequate command of the English language and please refrain from reading "into" racist comments (that's what I sense if I "read into" yours). I do not care where you're from, what you may or may not believe in, or what the color of your skin is, but the 3rd point of your reply I find in need of more ridicule than I can provide after a work shift. If you want to accuse me of something, please try and get something better than this.

I know how you feel, I hate hiding my beautiful S4 in this ugly Incipio (getting a nice Spigen soon). The phone is built to extremely high quality, don't buy into the "metal" ignorance. Polycarbonate is much more durable and just as strong per pound as aluminum. Don't be afraid, the S4 does not take damage easily if not no more then any other phone.
If you want 100% relief that you can replace your phone for under a couple hundred bucks then get a dependable third party phone insurance program (Don't bother with AT&T's...)

Well, I loved the iPhone, but I was constantly waiting for a jailbreak to come out for each iOS version, just to quickly lose my jaikbreak if something went wrong and a restore was needed. And knowing that these headaches don't happen as often on android, and that rooting is not as necessary as a jailbreak on iOS, made me make the switch. And I'm glad I did.
I still prefer the iPhone's build materials though. I've never been a fan of plastic.

The Samsung fanboyism here is just as bad as Apple fanboyism, but because its here, its okay right? Its hilarious that the fanboys here don't see the hypocrisy of their statements. Pretending there is no issue and kissing ass to Samsung isn't going to get us, as the consumer, anything positive. Samsung doesn't care about you and more then Apple does.
Read the thread yourself. One person witnessed the screen crack while they were having their contacts transferred to their new S4 at the store. Obviously he got a new one right then and there but it WAS just sitting there.
For all those who say it's impossible for a screen to crack with no external force applied, that's not necessarily true. I believe I read somewhere that the S4's AMOLED screen and the Gorilla Glass 3 are glued together. If that's true, then it is possible that poor assembly technique could lead to internal stress in the assembly. For example, the two pieces should be allowed sufficient time for temperature normalization in a (temperature & humidity) controlled environment prior to assembly (gluing together); failure to do so would cause a bending stress (bending moment) pre-load in the assembled display.
I imagine poor assembly procedures would end up as batch-to-batch variation, so maybe there are some bad batches out there.

I'm thinking the same thing (bad batch).. or maybe these are all late friday models (for those who don't know this term, its used in the auto industry. cars made late on a friday afternoon are said to be generally inferior since workers mentally 'check out' and start thinking about the weekend and don't pay attention/care to what they're doing.
Its dissapointing that Samsung is pretending its not an issue. This should be covered under the 1 year manufacturer warranty. I don't know if it'll happen to me but
now I'm forced to pay for extra warranty just to protect myself in case this happens. My next phone probably won't be a Samsung because of this.

Every time someone complains about a possible defect there's always a chorus of nerds who say "well, it's not happening to me so it must be your fault". It's tiresome. Maybe many of the cracked S4s weren't treated like raw eggs, but maybe the S4 cracked where other phones (notably the iPhone) would not. It's obviously kind of a delicate device.
Now, maybe people should be aware of that when they are selecting a phone, but the responses here swing too far into a weird kind of victim-blaming type area. It's not unreasonable to expect some durability from a phone.
My gf dropped her s4 case less on concrete 4 times now and has only had a few scuffs on bezel/rim.. Clearly the phones that broke so easily had defects

If the glass and the screen are glued together, I would wonder what the effects of cooling and heating would be? Two devices glued together, expanding and contracting at different rates would do some strange things.
This would explain the story about the screen cracking while contacts were being transferred; cold phone sitting in a box, and it heated up too quickly as the battery, wifi, data, processor all revved up after just being powered on.
I understand why folks would be suspicious of stories on the internetz of phones breaking; today, very few people seem to want to take responsibility for their actions, such as sitting on their new expensive toy. But to dismiss such claims right away on a newly-released device when we don't know of all its faults yet is not wise either. Sometimes karma is a *****.
