[Q] Question for those of you that have the dock - Transformer TF300T Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all, got a question. Ive had the TF300 without the dock and have grown to love it. I ended up returning the blue one I had and ordered a white one with the dock. Ive been reading several threads of people with transformers that have had their screen get cracked and damaged due to the dock.
For those of you with experience with the dock do you see that being a possible issue? Ive already dealt with a cracked screen with Asus and dont want to go through that again. Ive been wanting a TF300 and dock combo for awhile, but now these threads have me worried about using the dock.
A few people said they came up with a potential fix for their primes dock by using some rubber pads. So Im hoping that Asus realized this and fixed whatever was causing this with the TF300 dock. But even if they did theres a couple threads with people with a cracked TF300 screen in the transformer forums.
Just hoping that this is a rare issue, and that I shouldnt worry about it. Thanks in advance for your replies.

Hey, the doc came with mine and i have to say unless you are slamming the screen when shutting it, that just not going to happen, loving the extra battery life from the doc tho its unreal!

I have been using my tf300 for over a month and am docked daily. I don't even have the slightest blemish on my screen. I am careful when snapping the tablet in but not overly so. When removing the tablet, I always pull at the same angle as the hinge and make sure to fully move the switch over. Finally, as warned by Asus, I never carry my docked tablet by the tablet piece, only the dock.
If you follow those guidelines, in the absence of a defect with either the dock or the tablet, I can't figure out how the dock could damage the screen. Unless you are really rough with your electronics, you should be fine. Go for it and get both, totally worth it.

Thanks for the input. Helps a lot.

personally i don't think the dock would be of any use unless you plan on writing a novel or something on the transformer.
regarding the scratches, i have some nasty scratches on the bezel from docking and un-docking the tablet to the keyboard but it doesn't really bother me much since it's only on the bezel, out of sight out of mind.

When you say scratches on the bezel are you talking about the outer plastic piece, or the black part of the screen edges? Thanks

so do you think it needs a screen protector or not?

i guess it's pretty well confirmed no gorilla glass on the device, but a generic version of the hardened glass instead. so curious how protective it is and what your experience/recommendation is.
i ordered the armorsuit, but not sure if i want to use it. the thought of getting lint trapped in between screen protectors and the screen always makes me anxious about installing them at all. i know that's weird...
my 2 year old samsung focus with gorilla glass has 2 scratches from sitting in a cubby hole of a golf cart after a round of golf. no idea how that happened but i'm sure it had to do with sand...needless to say i've never had another device with scratches, and i don't intend on taking the tablet golfing...
i'd say keep the device naked for a few days then apply the ghost armor. if you install it and it looks umbearable then take it off. even if you get a few light scratches they won't be noticible when the device is on.

I always keep mine on the keyboard dock so its not like a phone when its in your pocket with money or keys.
I probably won't put one on.
I have one on and use the dock at times. I find it does stick to the dock making it a bit hard to open at times. But, I feel much more comfortable with it on, even if there is still some unevenness with my shield.
To be sure I installed a Phantomskinz screenprotector. Less smudges on the screen too.

I just put one on cause I have a clumsy wife and 3 young kids. It's whatever BestBuy installs. If it was just me I wouldn't put one on. It makes the screen a little sticky or too grippy. It doesn't let your finger slide across so easily.
Mine took a 6ft fall onto a concrete stepping stone in our garden the other day, and aside from a small ding in the outer case, no scratches on it this is amazing since it landed face down right on the screen.

Just picked my tf300 up this month, i am still thinking about the screen protector. but i had a question about leaving the tablet docked and carrying it. I have heard that doing that would increase the chance of cracking the screen if it was placed in a spot with a bit of pressure example like a backpack. Also do you any recommendations for a case that is compatible with the dock and is it advised?
Thank you in advance.

I have been carrying the tf300 with dock to almost all the places while travelling, including on a ship while carrying out the ship's trials. It has almost replaced my netbook. Had absolutely no problems carrying on a backpack. Still have the screen protector applied though as it prevents stuffing due to docking and undocking.
I have a cheap cloth sleeve type of cover to avoid dust accumulation which fits the docked tab comfortably. It is my experience, YMMV.
Sorry for the bad English, it is not my first language.

I have SGS 1 for two years, always in pocket with keys and stuff without screen protector and I don't have a single scratch on screen. Casing is beaten, but screen is like new.
I had TF101 with dock for a year and a half, always in backpack with all kind of stuff (USB discs, cables, name it, it was there), writing on it with Adonit Jot pen, and I had not have a single scratch on screen.
Now I have TF300T without screen protector in same backpack with same stuff in it.
For me personally, those screen protectors were needed in times when we had resistive screens, now they are relic made with only purpose to rip you off.

[Q] Broken dock latches on tablet; any solutions?

Quite some time ago, my tablet fell off my nightstand while plugged into the keyboard dock. Fortunately, nothing dramatic happened to either device, but I noticed that the small little clips that are meant to lock in when plugged into the dock chipped away. As a result, there's nothing that keeps my tablet securely locked on to the dock besides gravity and friction. Has anyone experienced anything similar, and is there any remedy that anyone has found? I know it's the fault of my own carelessness (I have since bought a case for it all) but it's really annoying when I don't realize that the dock is slipping away and whatever program happens to be running at the time crashes... Thanks.

No idea, mate.
Maybe you should contact Asus' customer service, maybe they have something useful to add.
I just posted a reaction to this thread so you won't feel like everyone who read this don't care.
Keep us up to date, and hopefully someone else on this site knows the anwser.

I second this motion, OP. You might be able to get it exchanged.
Samething happened to me. plastic crumbles fell out.
Did you find any solutions?
I was trying to find a replacement for that but couldn't find it.
Let me know if you found any solution to that.
well mine didn't fall or something like that but the screws inside the part of the dock that actually holds the tablet in place were unscrewing themselves, and because of the angle I couldn't tighten them myself so I ended up taking small pieces of black ductape and sticking it across all the screws inside there so they won't scratch the screen, it takes a little more effort inserting the dock and taking it out but it feels more secure in the dock, so if your latch is broken, you could try something similar to increase the friction

[Q] Anyone have issues with their keyboard dock?

I bought my tablet with the TF201 keyboard a while back since its identical to the TF700 keyboard. It's always connected and locked, but every once in a while i notice my external mouse, which is plugged into the usb port of the keyboard, stops working due to the fact that the keyboard magically unlocks itself from the tablet. the lock bar or whatever it's called doesn't retract though so I can never tell unless I try to slightly lift the tablet away from the keyboard and lo and behold it comes right off. I noticed this tends to happen more often when the tablet is opened about 100 or so degrees from the keyboard.
Do you think I may have a faulty keyboard or has this happened to others?
Mine locks properly, so I can at least say it's not normal.
Mine locks safely too. But I do have to push relatively hard until it "clicks" into the dock and to be extra safe I tend to slide the lock slider all the way to the right.

+1. I've had my TF700 + dock since July 16, 2012. No issues as far as connections between them are concerned, though the tab sits a little loose. The clasps don't grab the tablet tightly anymore. There is some play about 5 degrees. Anyone knows how it can be tightened again?

That's the weird thing though, mine clicks and locks but i can only push the slider to the mid point.
My Transformer doesn't stay tight on the dock any more, because the tiny little clip inside the tablet itself has broken on one side (I think). The result is that it seem to clip in correctly, but then I can rotate it to the right and the left clip come free without any resistance.
I've done quick searches to find people with similar problems, but haven't found anyone else yet. Doesn't look very fixable, due to the size of the small clip. Don't know if you've got the same issue, but to check, look where the dock latches onto the tablet with a good light and see if your clips are still there.

Amazing... we both post on the same day... could be this is the start of an epidemic of broken platic clips inside the tablet section. Not sure if they are plastic or metal but they do look plastic and in any case clearly are not fit for purpose of docking/undocking dozens of times a day.
I sent mine back... see my post. They are blaming me! I barely had it 6 weeks and it never left my house. Never dropped. Only ocassionally used extra force to dock it because if you don't then the locking tab does not click!!!! SIGH
the only problem that i have with the dock is that the spring in the hinge has gotten loose

I posted in your thread as well -- locking pin snapped off yesterday. It is plastic, which makes it a Prime example <pun intended> of use of plastic in places that could do with metal. :S I'm going to take it up with ASUS Netherlands once my blood pressure comes within more or less normal limits.

We should track our own and any subsequent replies over time ... as long as it takes ... really ASUS should consider recalling these to reinforce the pins. Its highly likely some will witness their tablet fall off the dock and smash in front of their eyes... while assuming they forgot to secure it properly!
I have confirmed that It was plastic materials.
When it first happened to me about 1.5 months ago, ( at that Time, I didn't know why it was doing that)
I noticed that my Tf700 does not lock properly, doesn't make a clicking sound, doesn't hold the device in place,,,and etc.
So at that point, i decided to pull it out of the key board ( i always had it with my keyboard as it was mostly used for my university lectures)
As soon as I pulled it out, i noticed that plastic pieces about ~5mm fall out.
So as of now, my solution was to have an armour-like screen protector and skinomi carbon series (to add a bit of bulk).
It doesn't lock in, but it s enough to have friction to hold it in place a lil more nicely.
I used quite a few strips of heavy-duty doublesided tape.

Yep, I found the piece of plastic too, which is what made me look for where it came from.
I have gotten into contact with ASUS Support in the Netherlands, and without even seeing what the issue is, they said that as far as they are concerned, it is user-induced damage and therefore not covered by warranty. I am planning of getting into contact with my lawyers and just have a talk if this is something they'd be able to crack open. I'll let you guys know the outcome of said talk.
Sent from a comfortable chair from the outer ring of Purgatory. The red guy asked me to say 'hi'.
the problem i started having with my dock is ill clip it in and close it. when i come back to it and open it up the screen doesnt want to come on even if i press the power button. if anyone knows a solution for this let me know please it would be greatly appreciated.

When you say rotate it to the right do you mean lift the right side and turn the tablet anti-clockwise and then the left clip comes free...
or do you mean lift the left side and rotate it clockwise (right) and the left clip comes free? :cyclops:

Choice 2. My left clip is broken, so the left side can lift free. Doing so causes it to rotate clockwise (right).

On mine, both clips have degraded severely. However, the release from the dock is right side first.
Broken left clip here... I noticed it today. And I'm pissed. What a BIG FAIL from Asus. I won't even bother trying to get it repaired, it's unlocked anyway.
I was beginning to love this thing since I installed CleanROM Inheritence... It's was a nice and fast tab. Well, now it's a broken and fast tab. I'm thinking of selling it before it falls into pieces. It's sad because I love the size, the keyboard, Android, etc.
The right clip will probably fail soon too. What a let down...

Keyboard no longer locks.

Hey all. One day when I picked my pad and dock up by the screen it just came apart. Thinking I might have hit the slider earlier I didn't think anything of it. Next time it happened I looked at the locking ports. It looks like there were little plastic tabs that swivel up and down inside there? I used a pin and moved to back to its horizontal position and didn't think anything of it. However a few weeks later the same thing happened and when I looked in there I could see those plastic tabs on the tablet anymore. Now it just slides off and is there something you can do or do I just never remove it from the poetic case I bought.

I'm not sure if this is going to help you out, but over time my dock started to hold the tablet *very* loosely. I could pull the thing out without touching the switch. I ended up putting a couple strips of electrical tape on the padding inside the clamp (stacked on top of each other). Now the connection feels as solid as ever. If something has snapped off you might be out of luck, but it's worth a shot.
FYI, I was worried at first that the tape might scuff the bezel over time. After two months it hasn't been an issue.
I have the same problem. Its a bit annoying considering the price you pay for these things.
Mine just started doing the same thing not sure tape will help in that the locking mechanism does not catch at all. Has anyone contacted asus on the issue? Haven't dealt with their support at all didn't know if it was a lost cause

[Q] How to tighten the keyboard dock?

Hi all,
I have been using my tf700 with the dock for more than a year now. I realize recently over time the connection between the dock and the tablet becomes rather loose and the tablet wobbles quite a bit back and forth (luckily everything is working properly). Since my tablet is out of warranty, I am thinking about fixing this myself, if possible. I know the issue of the dock becoming loose is quite common, but I have yet to see a DYI solution. Is this something I can fix myself?
Thanks a lot for your help.

Check if the screws under the 2 feet next to the hinge have come loose?
On youtube I found this video describing the tear down of the dock.
Rats, I can't post a link yet. Well, search for 'Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime Dock Tear Down'
In the comments somebody is describing how to take the hinge apart.
The screws that you can see in the hinge (not the ones under the foam strip) might be worth tinkering with. The outer two seem to be sticking out a bit in my case. In fact they scrape my tablet a bit (two silver scratches just 2 cm outside the slots where the dock connects with the tablet). It might be that they could do with some tightening. Or perhaps by loosening them a bit more the fit gets more tight. I don't know, but worth trying, I think.

I just did it myself with the help from the instructions HERE. 4 possibilities: (1) The screws holding the metal frame of the clamp to the bottom (inside); (2) the screws on the outside of the bottom that sdbags mentioned; (3) the screws along the rails inside the clamp (there are 4 on the bottom underneath the 2 plastic strips); (4) the 2 nuts at both ends of the metal frame of the clamp. I just re-tightened them all. No big deal, just be gentle with the plastic tab holding the keyboard and the bottom together. Have fun.
