[Q] Suggestions for the lack of SD/Removeable battery - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

First of all, for the most part, after about a month of owning the one x, these haven't been much of an issue for me. With that being said, I want to keep it that way so I am wondering how people are handling a couple of things:
First, because of the good battery life, when I go to bed, my battery is usually sitting around 40-50% left. That puts me in a bit of a dilema because if I don't stick it on charge, I will be hurting the next day. I'm also hesitant on putting it on charge because I've always heard that you should let the battery drain a bit more than that and that charging it at that level over and over isn't good. So, what do I do? Before, I'd just not charge it and swap batteries with a fully charged one and then rinse/repeat.
Second, with 10GB of space available, I'm sitting at around 5 GB free. The two main things I have that are eating up some space are nandroid backups (at 1 GB a pop) and my titanium backups (around 500MB). Add to those my couple of ROMS (around 300-500MB each), some themes & other misc mods, not to mention a handful of videos... well, things are beginning to add up quickly. I'm trying to come up with some sort of automatic/hand-off/set it and forgetit type of setup to handle this. I'm starting to try out a product called folder sync to move files up to dropbox at some scheduled time. I'm just struggling with how best to set things up. For example, a really need the last nan backup sitting locally. I also think my titanium backups (set to only 1 in history btw) would be best sitting locally. My current rom .zip (I dunno), if I need to reflash, then locally would make sense. Some videos could go up to dropbox, some that I use more frequent should be local cause I don't want to get that dreaded throttling on my unlimited (cough cough) data plan. I do own tasker (although I'm no expert and mainly use it for syncing accounts). Foldersync has scheduling (and also a tasker plugin).
So basically, I'm just looking to find out what other people are doing. For the non flashing/modding people, maybe nothing, but for folks like me, I would have to believe you are running into some of the same issues I am.
Thanks (sorry for the long drawn out post)

First point: i charge every night no matter what and plug in whenever there's a charger available, e.g., at home, work in the car. not concerned about battery conditioning, etc. if the battery presents a problem i'll get another device.
Second point: i keep one nandroid, current recovery and my current ROM on my device. this will get me up and running in emergencies if needed. themes and other tweaks can be added later so i don't keep them locally. i can reload apps via Play Store if needed. i keep prior nandroids, TI Backups, system/app and data/app folder backups and anything else on Dropbox. i fluctuate between 2-5 GB of available space on my device depending on how much music i want to keep locally. just keepin it simple
hope this feedback helps...

Yes, except the getting another device part. Not sure if I'd want that expense after plopping 550 for this.
I had a 32gb card in my inspire and usually used about 20gb. Just gonna have to change some habits i guess.

Do your backups automatically upload to Dropbox? If so, how?
If not, ignore this haha.

wanted to clarify my statement. i meant that if i had battery issues, i'd get a replacement HOX. i'm in 100% agreement with you that i wouldn't pay $$$ for another device.

no, i usually backup and copy to Dropbox when i'm connected to a laptop, e.g., at home or work.

Im debating how I want to do this. Tb has a built in feature for that but it has flaws like if I uninstall an app and delete its backup, it still sets up on dropbox kinda things. Foldersync might be a good solution cause it can do syncing (both ways if desired). Another nice feature is it can delete the local files after uploading to dropbox. It also works with other cloud services. Sorry for plugging the app, but although I haven't really set it all up yet, I went ahead and purchased the full version cause it seems to have everything needed to handle what I believe should be part of any new smartphone that doesn't have a sd card.

hopefully when S-off comes our way and we gain access to the kernal, USB host will be the way to go. I have a short right angle USB host cable and a micro USB drive so I can store everything in my pocket if need be and just save any apps on the phone its self.

That is a myth, Lithium Ion batteries do not need to be run down all the way. Feel free to charge it whenever you want.

In fact, running down all the way is bad for lithium ion batteries. The reason why some people recommend doing that is to calibrate the charge level circuit on the battery. That said, don't do it too often!
Lithium ion batteries like to be charged often. Charge as often as you can. Keep it topped up.

Tell me hows your battery life after root.

My phone has been charging awfully slow on the A/C Adapter. And it drain that battery on 3 hours. I'm still looking at what could've caused this.
Very good thus far. First charge was a little slow which I chalked up to conditioning.
Check Google Talk make sure you are not signed in. Open it, menu then settings and remove auto sign in. Then menu and sign out.
Make sure 4g isn't on
Make sure gps isn't on
Make sure bluetooth isn't on
Same with wifi unless you are using them. They are easy enough to turn on and off as needed.
Screen brightness to auto
Check facebook, twitter, weather etc.. refresh settings.
Check mail settings if not using IMAP. POP3 searching every 5 or 15 minutes in low signal areas can be a huge drain.
I also removed all the bloat crapware that I didn't want on anymore. I also used a program called "Startup Manager" to prevent all the other crap from loading all the time on reboot and randomly throughout the day.
The epic gets a little less signal than my EVO did. Although the EVO had 3 or 4 radio upgrades to get it where it is now but for now it is a little less which will use a little more power until we get a few updates.
I'm getting excellent life thus far.

When I got my phone, surprisingly it was almost drained. So I plugged it for about 3 hours and it completely charged. Now I put it on the AC Adapter and it was around 20% and when I look at the time 4 hours had passed by and still wasn't 100%. I would say it took 4 hours and 20 minutes. And I looked at the Battery used and it said 73% Display. The rest were like 5 things with 3 or 5%.
Thank You!
Yes.. Yes..! Please Do so tell..
I will make this short and sweet. I am arguing with my fiancee cause I just showed her two videos the Epic's camera and how they looks amazing. I saw a few videos taken today on the tube and this was to much to handle. I have an Evo and I compared and yes the Evo has more density due to the extra 3MP but the capture and sharpness of the Epic is amazing. The extra LED is great, a little brighter on Pictures. Not Much! The screen is a tad bit bigger, but horrid in the light, but who's outside like 24? Eh, I need everyone to convince me in.. So I have questions!
Dlna.. How has video Playback been?
Battery Life?
Smoothness, ADW Launcher Pro, Come on guys you know the drill..! I wanna know all the above!

I haven't messed with DLNA yet. Looks like you can stream from the PC and other media devices fairly easily with "All Share" but I haven't had a chance to mess with it. Basic codec support is still significantly better than the EVO. No need for rock player. Although the music player is different than the Touchwiz 3.0 devices which should be updated with Froyo.
My battery life has been equal to my Evo. Maybe a little better.
There is no comparison with smoothness or in Camera / video taking quality. The Epic beats the EVO hands down and this was the big reason my evo is on Ebay right now. Hands down the Epic wins.
Keyboard is very nice. Swype is also nice (had it on my evo as well).
Screen is much better and brighter. It seem to be easier to clean as well for whatever reason.
The downsides?
Nothing major that I can see. Developer support should be good since the Galaxy S has been released on every carrier. Porting to the Epic should be trivial once the keyboard files are isolated.
Regardless, the EVO needs to be rooted to even be a decent phone. The Epic far less so. I've removed some of the crap ware and stopped some of the auto starting apps and that is about it. Thus far the Epic has been very good. It does have a fair bit of crap preinstalled but its easy to remove.
I do find the Epic's screen, while better than the Evo, does seem a bit high in contrast. Its still much better in all regards IMO but I do notice it. We might be able to adjust this at some point.
The side power button is something to get used to, not a huge deal but odd.
Having the micro usb port up top is a mixed thing as well. Its a little farther from the power source if you are on the device talking to if your cord is short it could be an issue. Otherwise its easier to hold IMO without the cord and such getting in the way when resting in your hand while surfing.
I think JuiceDefender is killing my battery.. :S I used it Yesterday without Root and old apps and I could swear the phone lasted the whole day.

That's perfect, I still need to hear if it gives errors in the DLNA playback. From TV 2 PS3 whichever anyone can confirm. I know the Evo has codec issues when playing video from it. Just wanted to be sure this was not an issue in it there.
Otherwise the camera quality yes is amazing on the epic. I dint get it the Evo is 8mp, err? Anyways I am happy, I am going to exchange my Evo from what it looks like. I guess I have to get used to not having sense anymore. Thats about it.
More would be great if anyone cares to share to a fellow Evo pondered mind?

Well. I'm gonna find a way to remove root. Since I am 100% sure its draining my battery and fast. It's either that or Juice Defender (Plotter) I took it out of the charger at 5 am, left it on my bed and when I checked on it 55 minutes later it was 94%.
Battery life is exactly the same, all we did was root there are no ROMs to install which could impact battery in a positive or negative way so far. Again all we did was gain super user permissions root does not impact battery life whatsoever.
My battery life appears to drain slower now that I've rooted, that probably is because I have SetCPU underclocking my phone to 200mhz when the screen is off so it won't waste battery. Also if you are draining quickly you can look in Settings> About Phone> Battery Usage as to what is using the most battery. A good chance if you have f.e. Live Wallpapers on or something is that they will drain your battery. Also depending on what you have enabled for email syncing, etc. that may play a role. I keep my phone signed into Google Talk + Google Sync + TouchDown Exchange syncing all day and seem to have no issue at all. (I was at 60% after a full day's use yesterday, and that included some foray into the world of 4G in the area.

All of those settings are off. Email, Facebook, No LWP, no SetCPU. I really think its juice defender the culprit here. Cause it all happened when I restored my apps using Titanium Backup.
When you restored did you restore the apps plus data or the apps by themselves? When you add the data in that can lead to problems because the data was for another phone.

There isn't a backup in Titanium Backup of only apps. You can restore Apps with Data only.
Slow battery charging via USB after rooting? unplug the USB, go to settings and disable USB debugging. Plug the cable back in and select "Charging" from the pop-up.
problem solved.

i to have noticed significant drain after the one click root process... i have had my phone running for maby 4 hours off a full and with it in my pocket it can go dead.... doesnt happen all the time and i must say as well that the charging is extremely slow for me as well... hopefully there is a fix for this soon.. might have to do a restore and see if that helps.

Ummm... Yes you can. Open up Titanium Back up, press Menu -> Batch -> (Choose your restore function), then tap the radio button next to "App Only" instead of "App+Data". You can even just restore the data instead of the app!

So I love the phone but I just can't stand this battery anymore I'm starting to think t mobile gave me a used battery. Ive tried draining the battery to 0 then charging it to 100 nothing. I tried the restart nothing. I work from 8 to 4 and I start the day with 100 and end with 10 if I'm lucky! As I'm typing this its at 87% and its only 9:04. Running services like app pack car home and such are off wifi is off brightness at 50 and I kill tasks a lot with ATK can someone please give me a step by step on how to calibrate even if I have to mod the phone Thank you =)

I'm having the same issue as well. I just received my phone yesterday and I charged it fully last night and kept it unplugged over night. Overnight it only lost about 3%. But after medium ussage this morning which consisted of checking email/texting/surfing the web, the battery dropped a significant 25% over the course of 40 minutes. Any suggestions?

Root phone if you havent already
Charge phone to 100%
Flash clockworkrecovery
Boot into recovery and under the advanced menu select "Wipe Battery Stats"
Reboot

That kind of behavior is normal. The phone loses very little while idle but checking email and web surfing both require a data connection and that uses a lot of power. More usage = faster battery drain.
My galaxy s would easily last a full day with constant email/text and a couple hours of talk. This phone doesn't even seem to be able to last me a few hours. Do you also experience this significant battery loss?
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
You prolly need to do a factory reset. For some reason some peoples phones use more power even at idle than they should. My phone was one of them. There is a whole thread about it but pretty much doing a factory reset should correct this issue. Did for me. I get almost twice the battery life of my Galaxy S.

No need to go into recovery to wipe the stats, just use Battery Calibration(requires root) its in the market and also includes instructions on how to use the app.

I had the same problem. I followed the thread below and it worked. I've ben getting 10-15 on moderate-heavy use. I also did the htc battery calibration before I ran the battery calibration app. I use juice defender as well.

Check out the link jsauce75 posted. If you are running stock that means you most likely have background services running that are pulling significant battery. You will need to root and then use titanium backup to either remove or freeze those services.
Before doing that thought I would download Battery Monitor Widget. Use it to see how much power (mA) your phone is using. When I first got mine I was draining battery fast and when I used that widget I learned that the phone was using over 100mA even when idle. It was like the phone would never go into a sleep state. After doing a factory reset my phone idles at 1-2mA.
There isnt much you can do about battery drain while you use the phone because the screen and data connection are huge battery drains. All these tips are to improve your power consumption while idling. As I said before all I have done is factory reset and removed unneeded services and I have been getting double the battery life of my Galaxy S with the exact same apps and usage for weeks now.

1) You said you're using ATK "a lot". This is adding fuel to the fire. ATK is not needed with today's android systems. These apps you see sitting in ATK are sitting dormant. It's like the task manager of a computer. I have 3-4 apps running in my system tray and around 20 other services running in my task manager.. They are all sitting dormant, using zero CPU. They have ram allocated to them. That's it. That's the same as the Android. They are sitting dormant, and they have memory allocated to them. The best thing about the android OS is that it will automatically shut down dormant apps on its own. A PC doesn't do that. So, look at it this way. Let's say I'm on my laptop's battery. I have 20 apps/services running, and they are dormant. They are doing nothing towards drainage of my battery. But, I decide to turn on my screen "a lot" during the day, and kill the apps. Boom... Battery usage for the CPU to turn the screen on, the screen takes away from the battery, usage for the task monitor to be running.. Then, there is a process to shut down the apps, that takes battery.. Then on top of all that.. When the apps restart on their own.. guess what, they have CPU/Battery usage. You're adding fuel to the fire.... a lot of it, imho.
2) Install Watchdog and Titanium Backup (pay the small fee so you can freeze the apps.. or you can learn how to manually remove them yourself. I like using the app). Now, just to prove the point.. Open up ATK... Then go into Watchdog.. You'll see the apps that are running in ATK are not using any CPU. But.. when they do start up/shut down, there is some usage going on that will contribute. So with Titanium backup, freeze the apps. The apps I have frozen: AppPack, Broswer (have dolphin installed instead), Car home (2 of them?), com.android.provider. applications, com.logmein.resecuesecurity and .rescue, email (using gmail instead), My account (2 of them?), nfs shift, nova, street view, tmo TV, tegrazone, telenav, videochat voice dialer, zinio reader, zsprovider. From there, you can see the apps running in watchdog and you don't need ATK.. But, watchdog also uses processor to "monitor" the usage of other apps.. So place the threshold setting at like 40%, and the frequency at 3 or 5min. This will keep Watchdog from using too much battery, but it'll also notify you if an app is running wild on cpu usage. Maybe for 1 day, put the threshold at 30% or maybe even 20%.. so you can see if 1 or 2 apps are using a lot of power. If they are system apps or apps you want.. just leave em be. If they are not, freeze them/uninstall them.
3) I have found that using wifi and wifi calling GREATLY increases my battery life. As soon as I turn on 2g/3g/4g... my battery starts to take a fast dive. Whenever possible, use wifi/wifi calling...
4) Screen down to the lowest brightness setting. Shut off screen manually whneever you are done, or set it to 15sec shut off. I only bump up the brightness when i'm outdoors.. The glare makes the low setting impossible to see the screen.
5) Shut off syncing, bluetooth, and gps unless you need it. If you're around a computer at all where you can get your email and such, there is no need to use the phone for it. I only use tmo's network and syncing when I'm away from work or the house... typically when I'm on the road.
Lastly, yes, some people want to use their phone... use the 4g service.. etc. I understand.. But also understand that if you're going to use the phone like a computer.. and you're going to get 8hrs out of the battery... I say that's pretty dam good. This post is not meant to say that there is nothing wrong w/ the battery... It's to help you out to determine if there is a problem in the first place. There was a guy complaining about battery usage left and right. When I got involved in disussions with him, he admitted that he's on his phone all day long... txting quite a bit. Well.. duh?
I don't doubt there could be some challenges with a bad app running wild, a bad battery, etc. But I also don't doubt there are people who are using the crap out of a dual core phone.. and are doing things themselves to add to the problem... and then they blame the phone.
That's my 2c....

Thanks for the great detailed response. The OP actually was the one who stated he uses ATK, I don't. I looked through the thread with the recommendations for 20+ hour battery life and noticed that those apps you mentioned above required rooting the phone. I hate to sound so naive when it comes to this stuff but i'm a fairly new android user and have not yet discovered a lot of the technical aspects behind it all. I'm not exactly sure what rooting is and what it entails. Is it something you suggest I do? Also, my battery is slowly approaching 0%. Should I let it drain all the way before charging it again? Others suggested letting it drain all the way and doing a factory reset and that seemed to help their issues.
By default Android restricts certain areas of the OS from being accessed by third-party applications (prolly for security reasons). Only problem is a lot of great apps require such access to function properly. In order to give them that access you must root the phone.
Here is the rooting thread. It is extremely easy to do.

Thanks.
Does rooting affect warranty in any way?
or the ability to perform a factory reset for that matter?

New to android is not an excuse, I was a religious crackberry user for the last 8 years, and I just switched over to android last month. I'd suggest you to root you phone so that you can remove the stock cr4pwares, and the ability to install custom ROMs. Took me 10 mins to figured out how to install andriod OS into my hd2, 25 mins to perm rooted and unlocked my g2(this beast is little bit more "lockdown" than the other), and 5 mins to rooted the g2x. Google is your friend, bud. If you want something more out of your g2x, use the "search" button. Just my 2 cents.

FYI: I'm a first time android user (smartphone user at that..) and I rooted my phone easily. You can unroot your phone just as easy as you rooted it. It's a 1 click method with that software.. check out the link. Seriously, it's easy.
You may have to have ABD ADB or whatever installed first.. Not sure. I heard about it, and did it... and then rooted.. and it worked.
Thanks for the help guys, appreciate it. I'll let you know how it goes
I'm also having another issue with the phone. I'll see if you guys can help without having to make a new thread.
Yesterday I installed Zedge and downloaded one of the wallpapers there. When I applied the wallpaper I noticed a bit of lag on my home screens, so I reverted back to the default wallpaper and the lag was still there. I deleted the app and wallpaper I downloaded but the lag was still there. I applied a default live wallpaper and the lag disappeared and everything was moving as smoothly as it had been originally, but when I apply the regular wallpaper the lag persists. Any ideas?
now if u do root and remove bloatware what all is safe to remove i have all but my account car home and i think one other can anyone provide a definite list and battery is significantly better after just that
LOL think there's not driver issues. Swapped a dead battery with a fully charges one today and been running almost 2 hours still shows 1%

Can switching between the stock battery and the anker battery cause problems?

So, my boyfriend and I are having a debate. We both have the Doubleshot, bought on the same day. We are both rooted, and he is stock and I am running Bulletproof. I exclusively use the Anker battery, while he constantly switches back and forth from the stock battery and the Anker battery.
Here is the issue, he is having a lot of reboots, and freezing issues, he says it seemed like any time he launched an application that seemed to use a lot of processing power. I have none of these issues, and have come to believe it is because of his constant battery changing between two different capacity batteries, what do you guys think?
Well i think his is acting ****y because hes running tmobiles crappy rom, tell him to root it and it will stop

I did make him root it months ago, I am trying to convince him to flash Bulletproof.
I think he should stick to one battery and reset the battery stats via recovery and do a few recharge cycles.

Should run this app at least to get the battery stats updated.
Swapping back and forth between the batteries is probably confusing the batterystats.bin file and making it work harder to keep it right - if the batteries were the same capacity it would be a non-issue.
I don't think that's the source of the troubles though -
When's the last time he did a factory reset?
On the stock ROM that's something you'll have to do from time to time to keep it running right, it just gets jammed up after a while from all the bloat, rogue libs, and other random crap floating around in it.
Tell him to backup whatever he can, get it to a pc, then do a factory reset AND wipe the sdcard in the process - start fresh.
It'll take a few hours to re-install all the apps, get your contacts back in, etc...etc... but it should run well after that. Also make sure you have a full and fresh battery for running the install - it'll all be better that way.
If he's S-OFF, make sure he stays that way, and if he wants to run stock then have him flash the most recent PG59IMG.zip after doing the factory reset and before he puts all his stuff back on.
Here are the restore to stock directions and links to mirrors i'm hosting for the packages:

...and here is the above mentioned battery thread:

To me it just sounds like his ROM (stock one) is just full of random libs from uninstalled apps and whatnot, leftover directories unused and generally just not very 'clean' anymore - factory reset or a refresh of some kind along those lines should get him squared away.
( might be best if you just do it, so it gets done right, since you seem to be the more tech inclined of the two of you? )
oh...and if possible just toss that stock battery in a drawer somewhere and forget about it. Once a month run a charge through it to keep it working, and carry it with you as a spare for trips or something, but try to keep it out of the general rotation.
If he does want to swap back and forth, then do it with the two stock batteries you guys have (your old one and his) and leave the anker out, or split another two-pack between you and have him work with two anker batteries. As long as he's using batteries of different capacities it's gonna play hell on the batterystats.bin file.

Battery Usage Question

So I got my phone from craigslist, used. It's been in a pretty good condition so far and I am satisfied with everything but it's battery life. Now i'm not sure if i'm used to my phones lasting longer or if my battery really does run out of life faster.
So, here are some facts, I installed CM9 20120706 from stock (got comparable to stock battery life) then migrated to AOKP milestone 6-02 and upgraded to 6-03. The transitions have been smooth, I haven't had any problems and am getting the best battery performance (so far) on AOKP.
I use my phone a lot, listen to music, read books and surf the web etc. My wifi, data and gps are always on. Upon continuous usage, my battery lasts me around 2 to 2 and a half hours. I have the stock battery, and i have no idea how old this phone is. I will try and upload screenshots tomorrow (I've been restarting the phone a lot today and have it on charge so the screenshots won't show anything definitive right now).
As far as new batteries go, I have This in mind. But really I'm looking for anything under $20 that'll fit in our phone without an extended cover..
Thanks for your help in advance. Virtual High five :highfive:

The 2300mah battery works you just may have to rig it to work. I was getting about 4 hours max on the stock battery and now I get a day and a half. The improvement was amazing.

Thanks bud, just bought the 2300mah battery, should be here in about a week (maybe even faster)! I can't wait to use it
I have the regular battery. So far I'm at 1d 10h 8m on the current charge, with 54% left. That's pretty amazing.
Usage plays a large part in the length of battery life. I didn't think I used mine heavily but from what I've read from others (not just on this thread) mine might be considered a bit more heavy than others. My wifi is on most of the time, I use my phone as a phone a lot (gasp! LOL) and that really chews the battery. I ordered and received the 2300mAh battery recently. I didn't have to mod anything to make it work. I had to press the back cover down a little harder than before but otherwise it was a great fit. It says you have to go through 4 charge cycles (100% down to dead, apply, lather, rinse, repeat) and I'm on the 2nd cycle currently.
That being said, I was probably getting around 14 hours of battery life throughout the day using AntonX's barebones ROM, his kernel, and the stock 1650mAh battery. Right now I'm at 11 hours, 56 minutes and still have 63% life left on the 2300mAh. I'm not sure at what level it'll find it's sweet spot but so far I'm happy with it.

While doing some more reading about the mediaserver issues, I found that another work around is to put a file named .nomedia in the folders you dont want mediaserver to scan. I tried this and it wasnt excluding the folders. If somebody else gets it to work let me know por favor.
This seems to be a issue that rears its ugly head every so often. Its been happening off and on since Froyo.
---EDITED TO ADD----
This weekend I used pandora to stream music for about 30-45 minutes mediaserver went nuts and chewed through my battery. It wasnt horribly bad but it used more in that time then it did all day. I cant remember where I read it but I did read somewhere that some of the issue was caused by VBR files. Somebody re-ripped them as CBR and mediaserver stopped error looping and chewing the battery up. The fact pandora triggered media server leads me to believe this is a valid point. Pandora has to use a VBR format since the Pandora One service increases the bit rate to 192 kbps. Also if your data connection drops to 2/g or 1/g the bitrate has to decrease to limit the amount of buffering.

Did you delete the database files after creating .nomedia? They will rebuild and shouldn't include anything with .nomedia afterwords. Try deleting data/data/com.android.providers.media/databases/anything with a .db. Reboot and give it some time to rebuild then check to see if the folders contents are still listed.

LOL. It's easy to forget the small things. Could looking out on the .nomedia file. I should of mentioned that before. It's just that I have 10gigs of music and my media server is usually only at 3-5% after listening to tunes for hours. Guess none of mine a corrupt.
I tried using this
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.yschi.ID3Fixer
1. I used the first option and applied to all music
2. Then i used the second option to all music and during the process it said that some files failed (usually a whole album folder)
3. Got rid of the files that error during the second process
And today my battery lasted longer with much less media server drain.
22%
I'm using a stock battery 1500mah and I unplugged at 7 this morning and its been on 13hrs and 21 mins and 1 hr 49 mins screen on time.

Battery Life Help Thread

Ok guys I have prbassplayer's blessing on this thread and he feels it may work so lets keep this civil and make it a helpful and definitive thread to help any and all users get better battery life. From here on this will be the only thread on battery life all others in q&a and general will be reported and hopefully closed. it is open to people in the skyrocket section on any rom and kernel combo. There are rules and standards that any who wish for help on this thread.
Rules
All requests for help must be in this format as this will help in speedy and decent recommendations.
1.Rom & Kernel Combo
2.How long you have been on said combo ex. 3 days and number of cycles will help considerably too.
3.Screenshots
1.Battery Graph
2.Screen on time
3.Better Battery Stats info (If applicable but not required).
4.general usage info as in how do you use your phone give us details into what you do through the day.
You can not suggest another rom.
this thread will not be turned into a best rom thread it is to help others get the most out of their current setups you may suggest other kernels but if you suggest another rom i will report your post and it will be removed.
My hope is that this will cut down on tons of threads and give everyone a good place to get help please guys lets make this section awesome like it used to be.
I think u should also ad to the op (nrm ) a few simple guidelines or places/things they can go and independently research. Not spoon feeding mind u, just a starting point. here are a few examples that come to mind:
1) Underclocking/governors
2) Undervolting
3) Wakelocks (pre-established thread anyone?)
4) Droidwall/background data usage & sync
5) CPU Sleeper & alternatives
6) Auto brightness controls (cm9, lux, etc...)
7) Wifi as alternative
8) H+ instead of LTE
9) Modem/radio choice
10) Sleep/display time outs etc...
And MOST IMPORTANTLY, avoiding apps like Juice Defender
I'll look into adding as we go thanks for the ideas bro

I'll start, because I just got the best battery I've gotten to date yesterday. WOO!
Note: I used stock charger to charge the night before, although no wake locks, i always restart in the morning. Dont know if it helps... I feel like it does.
1. CM9 Stable, InstigatorX 5.4.5
2. installed 2 days ago-ish
3. see attached.
4. Forgot to get a screen on time screeny... was like 2 hours. light useage. auto brightness
5. badass governor, used the cwm script to get both cores to be governed. 1.72/192
6. LTE/Wifi all day, baby. Mostly wifi.
7. there was a slight period of charge when i moved over some music. wasnt more than ~10 minutes of being plugged into my laptop.
8. exchange email on 15 minute syncing periods. Turned off push, as i can deal with the 15 minutes between emails... BEST. BATTERY SAVER. EVER.
9. gps off. didnt use it at all. I missed the key screen shots... I know. I only have this because i was bragging to my friend who's got a s3 on verizon and a sucky battery.
couple phone calls, probably 30 texts. it was pretty light usage these days. Color me impressed.

Not having bad battery life, but hey, it can always be better right!?!
First off, GREAT thread idea, it's a shame it hasn't really been utilized though. How about I start. I'm wondering a bit about how much battery I can save if I get rid of Google maps. Also, if you have any recommendations of a replacement for it if I do dump it. Even if I don't open the application the entire day, it is consistently in the top stats on my BBS reports. I'm not really sure of the effect it will have if I get rid of it though. I mean, if it is only going to get me another 40-60 minutes per charge, I don't know if it would be worth losing the convenient access to reliable maps.
Anyway, I thought I'd toss this out and see what everyone thinks.
I'm currently running Majicks Orthus One (quite happily I might add) and I've been on it for almost a week now. I generally don't use my phone too much during the weekdays while at work but, once I get home, the screen is generally on until I go to bed. On weekends, which is when I grabbed these screenies and BBS dumb, I am on WIFI most of the day, but I use my phone ALL DAY LONG even though I've got my laptop and rooted Kindle running CM10 sitting right next to me. LOL!
Other than the apps I've added (around 70 total), I've got it set up pretty much as if I just flashed it. By this, I mean that I haven't really done any battery tweaking. It's on badass gov by default, and I am utilizing the bln feature (I know it hates my battery, but I LOVE this feature). I get pretty good life usually (12-16 hours with 3-5 hours of screen on time), and I haven't really seen the media wake locks which are affecting others. Also, and I know I'm asking a ton (and maybe even being a bit of a battery miser considering I'm already getting decent time on my charges), but do you see anything else that should be a cause of alarm to me? Everything looks minuscule to me compared to Maps, but I know that there are many people who know much more than me when it comes to this stuff. So all thoughts are welcome.Without further adeau, here are some of my screen shots and BBS dump...
Thanks in advance! I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
Great idea. I'll contribute as well.
I'm also on Orthus-One, and whatever kernel comes with. One change I made was to change the governor to Conservative. Not entirely sure what that does, but I thought I'd throw it out.
I've been on this ROM for 28ish hours, so today was day 1. I've rebooted a few times. Can't remember how many.
I don't know that I've done a whole lot to reduce battery usage. Today I was on wifi almost all day, but normally I fluctuate between H+ and LTE (LTE near work, H+ most of the drive home, wifi at home).
Brightness is set at a constant ~35% with auto brightness removed. I don't use my phone for anything other than answering calls in the car, so that suits me.
I don't play any games that would be battery intensive, and only watch videos (from sd) when it's plugged in. Rarely listen to music, but that's likely to change next week on vacation.
These shots were taken about 3 hours ago. There's been another hour and a quarter of screen on time since then. I used my phone a lot today, as you can see.
Also, I don't know if it makes a difference, but I took the case I had off of my phone yesterday, and it doesn't seem to get anywhere near as hot. Probably a coincidence, but I thought I'd mention it.
Since it was mentioned above, this is all on a Standard battery.

That's actually not half bad battery life. I noticed a few things, though. One is the NetworkLocationLocator wakelock. Leaving network location on will chew away your battery like that. If you can do without a location service more often than not, I'd leave it and GPS off. I actually think network location is less useful than GPS--GPS doesn't use *that* much more battery, and it's precise. With network location, if a couple of wifi networks near you have "_nomap" appended to the end of their name, you're lost.
The only other PWL I saw was Avast. Personally, I don't think any of the "anti-virus" apps are worth the time it takes to download them. They sit there eating up battery, when really all you need to make sure your phone doesn't pick up a virus or malware is common sense. Only install apps from Play, Amazon and XDA (third-party markets will often put bootloaders and other bad stuff in their apps), don't click anything on shady-looking websites, and leave USB debugging off unless you need it.
KWLs all look ok. BLN is murdering you, but if the feature's worth the battery sacrifice, more power to you.
Alarms look fine, but keep an eye on Facebook. It used a ton of network data for apparently only being active 28s (according to the PWL data). Do you have it set to use push notifications or refresh on a short schedule?

Not a coincidence at all. "Naked" phones run cooler than phones in a case. Shouldn't be by a ton (if it is, get a new case), but a case, naturally, restricts airflow, which allows more heat to build up. I had to stop using my Otterbox Defender for that reason--the phone was just getting too hot inside the case, and I was starting to be concerned.

Yeah, after seeing maps eating up so much power, I changed it to not automatically update my location. I was using it cause the wife is a bit of a worry wart and she heard a story from a friend that their husband was in a motorcycle accident not involving another car and wasn't found for about 12 hours cause he fell into a ditch off a country road. Now, she thinks that if one of us ever get into an accident, that latitude is going to save us. Lol! I get the theory behind it, but her iphone only updates it sporadically anyway so it's not really worth much. I unchecked all location services, and I'll just turn on gps when I need it and see how that treats me.
Anti-virus is more for if I lose my phone. I like the remote wipe feature, as well as the Web and app firewall. Plus, it doubles as a security blanket for me lol
BLN is a power monger, but I love being able to have that option so I deal with it.
FB is a pain in the butt in general, but I haven't found an app I like to use in its place so I've just dealt with it. I do have it set to push notifications, but I've read that you think it may be misbehaving even when it's not set to push data, so I may just dump it and try fast for Facebook or friendcaster for a bit to see if I can deal with one of those.
I appreciate you looking into this for me as you are pretty much the battery guru around here. I was a bit worried that no one was looking at this thread cause it wasn't really being utilized. I don't understand why, when everyone wants to open a thread for battery life, they don't seem to want to utilize the one sanctioned by our mod. But that seems to just be xda in general lately.

Yeah, after seeing maps eating up so much power, I changed it to not automatically update my location.

If you're willing to, freeze/uninstall Maps and use MapQuest and/or OSMAnd instead. Both eat up far less battery, and MapQuest has basically all the same features. I use Waze as well, but that's more for speed trap notifications than anything else.

Just an FYI, you can have the Avast theft protection app (the one they tell you to give a custom name to) on your phone without the full Avast suite. Eats up almost no battery, and can be set to wipe upon X number of failed attempts to sign in.

Friendcaster and Tweetcaster have both had great results for me. The Twitter app's biggest sin is a stray alarm that'll hold you awake for 10-15 seconds every so often. The Facebook app, though, is (I can only assume) downloading ad data and sending usage info back at set intervals, even if you have it set to refresh every X hours. I caught on when I had it set to never auto-update, but saw that it was still using mobile data.
As far as mobile protection I don't use antivirus but I have Cerberus for tracking wiping and the like

First problem is you're using juice defender. Imo, that app does more harm than good on ics. It also looks like the gtalk app is waking you up way to much. If you don't use it, I'd say to delete it or, at the very least, log out of it when you aren't using it. Maps, like with my last setup, is killing you. I'd recommend following tj benders advice to me and either freeze it, or delete it all together and try one of his suggestions for a replacement.
Also, we're you charging at any point during that cycle, running at 384 for over 3 hours suggests to me that you had either charged for a while, or ya got an app going crazy. That is, unless your screen on time correlation is similar. Without the screen shots Illnevertell asked for, I can't really tell much more.
If ignorance is bliss, you must be orgasmic. Don't let your pants get wet and use that search button.

FYI, if you zip your dump, I will not look at it.
AOKP JB (R4INS)
9/16/12 release with stock kernel.
I've been using this rom for some time now but still can't get past the wake locks. When I updated to the 9/16, I did a clean updated. Wiped everything and fresh install. As you can see my phone rarely goes to sleep, so if anyone knows any secrets or tips on how to fix these wake locks it would help a lot and get the battery life I deserve.

Solved
My apologies for not having followed thread rules on my prior post. I had just come from another battery thread that actually wanted BBS in zip form as the only post.
My prior BBS dump showed that my culprit wakelock was Suspend_Backoff. Searching I found the following thread:
productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/chrome/rT0ewNsBx18/0_RqLGBQr70J
I unchecked "Enable Tilt Scrolling" in Google Chrome settings and recharged my battery to 100%.
I then left it on idle all night just like it had been when I generated the last BBS file dump.
As you can see the results are drastically improved. Went from losing 65% of battery in 5 1/2 hours to losing 25% in 9 hours. Also went from 5% deep sleep to 94%!
Still not pefect but definitely a significant improvement. Thanks for the great thread!
Spectre one thing is network location I would turn that off until you need it also that giant cliff dropoff I'm assuming was a reboot of sorts that went uncaught I know that for me I don't get reboots on jb I go to recovery and clear my caches first thing then I make sure to close every app as I'm done using it as far as bbs I'll leave that to tj as he is a wakelock god at this point lol

Google Maps, basically, is the answer. It's polling NetworkLocationLocator pretty constantly. If you turn location services off, you'll help yourself tremendously. I still recommend uninstalling Maps (usual disclaimer about uninstalling system processes) and using an alternate app like Mapquest, OSMAnd and/or Waze to clean up all of those Maps-generated alarms.
Beyond that, HD Widgets is definitely keeping you awake some, so you might want to change the refresh time on that. That being said, I can't imagine HD Widgets is doing too much damage to your battery life or people wouldn't use it.
Post up another BBS dump if you get a chance. Also, BBS dumps are a great way to tell if you've randomly rebooted (which, yeah, can chew through a ton of battery) because they'll differ from the "up-time" shown by your battery screen. Also, if you set your phone down at 9:00 PM and wake up at 7:00 AM, but your BBS dump says it's only been five hours since boot, you know you've got some random rebooting going on.
