[Q] SK4G dropping keystrokes randomly - T-Mobile Sidekick 4G

I've been looking around for any mentions of this for a while now, but i only found vague mentions of it a while back. I thought it'll eventually get fixed in one of the custom roms.
I'm starting to think this is an isolated case since no one is mentioning it at all. (or it's me going crazy. i hope not.)
When trying the key test in the recovery, it doesn't seem to drop anything at all, but when booting android, it drops whenever i type fast enough.
Can anyone confirm whether or not their phone drops keys randomly when typing?

It is fixed in my cm merged v2.0.0
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium

i am using CM merged 2.0.0 and it's still dropping.
but if it's really fixed, maybe it's something i installed? will do a clean install and report back

I know that the stock ROM did this (KG2, and KJ2), and my install of GOv2 does this, as well.
I'm just waiting for some extra time to get CMv2 installed.

this problem can be fixed from what i've read by using NXD's kernel as well

Formatted /system, dalvik, cache, deleted userdata, reinstalled CM merged 2.0, still drops.

try flashing nxd's kernal over what you already have it might work

yeah... just figured id offer the only advice i could, aside from his device being messed up. i think its still worth a shot

interestingly enough, the Samsung Epic 4G also had dropped keystrokes issues. But this one seems to be a different problem.
On the SK4G, keys are dropped at random when typing fast.
on the E4G, keys are dropped when repeating the same character quickly (eg. hello, according to that post anyway)

well, thanks for the attempt, but it's still the same. I doubt it's hardware-related, since the keytest in recovery isn't dropping keys.

Yeah, the Epic 4G was WAY worse lol. I actually contacted the dev. that pretty much fixed the problem on the Epic, and he was curious and took a look at the SK. He said indeed that the SK shouldn't suffer nearly the same keyboard woes. But he did make a little patch for us anyway, to try and improve some other stuff, but it was never put into a kernel I don't think.
I do get a missed keystroke on this device every now and then, but not too often.

Well, i noticed it happens VERY randomly. sometimes it's just once every 10 messages in gtalk, sometimes, it hits twice or thrice in a single message. drives me crazy :/

Lol, I hear ya. That patch was posted, possibly even in the thread you linked, so it might still be there. Sduvick didn't feel motivated to add it to a kernel, and even tho it is simple, my patching skills were limited, so it never got tested.
I'll see if I can find where the interaction took place, and see if the patch link is still good.

This is me typing as fast as I can I drop keystrokes all the tim but it only seems to be the e the g and sometimes t I think its a hardware problem I'm not looking at the screen at all so you can see where the keystrokes might be dropping also I've had sidekicks since 2007 so I'm used to the full keyboard and typing extremely fast on it lol lalalalalala typey typey typey...
And now a few 4 letter words typed 20 tmes in a row watch for drops
Time time time time time time time time time time tim time time time time time time time time time
Ding ding ding ding din ding ding ding ding ding digng ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding
Dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt
And there you have it looking back on this post now I dropped a total of 2 e's and 1 g.
Currently running reactives cm6 merge v 2.1.0
Sent from my SGH-T839 using XDA

as i've said, it drops them VERY randomly. And for some reason, it doesn't drop, or at least as much as during regular use, when you start testing for drops. That, or maybe we're testing it wrong.
In my case, I'm getting drops on seemingly all of the keys. Sometimes on T. Sometimes Space. Sometimes even Return. etc.
Can anyone else test in the recovery key test under advanced just to make sure it's not hardware related?

It's worth a try, although I still don't see how the changes I made would alleviate dropped keystrokes. The printk logging statements have close to zero overhead compared to the rest of the Android stack.

Just to be sure, would you check what kernel version shows up under Settings -> About Phone?
I'm wondering if perhaps sometimes, the kernel is failing to flash.

Crappy wifi?

i usually never have any trouble with the WiFi on my phone, but for some reason the wifi is seriously failing the last couple days. I'm connecting to the same wifi network my computer is on and the computer is running very fast. Is it possible to mess with the wifi adapter?

Have you taken off your battery cover lately? I believe the wifi connections are back there and if you have taken off the battery cover, they might not touching all the way giving spotty wifi...
Yep tried that. Everything is connecting tight.
I dropped the phone the day I started having the issue but it was only about a foot long drop, and the bottom of the phone hit the ground first.
Could that be affecting anything? I dropped my iPhone 3GS more times than i've dropped my Inspire and i never had trouble with the wifi in that. Not trying to knock the Inspire because i couldnt stand anything about the iPhone when i had it.
Don't be careless and drop phones! That deserves any wifi issues lol

Tough to tell ya know. Each drop will do something different, I mean I've dropped my phone from my balcony and no problems...I'm going to make a bold assumption that you're rooted? If you are, reflash the ROM and see if that will help.

No that is a nand backup. It backs up your whole rom.
I usually stick to sense ROMs, but this should be universal. once I had that problem and flashed a new kernel and it was better than ever. Might want to give that a shot if your reflash doesn't work or you don't want to reflash.
He dropped his phone. I doubt that suddenly made a kernel or rom act up.

Ok I'll give you that. I have also dropped mine. I'm just throwing out possible options for him. Possibly his battery jarred and a config file in his kernel controlling his wifi power corrupted. or something got moved and is interfering with the wifi signal but his computer antenna is strong enough compensate. Yes highly unlikely, I know. Like I said, just trying to expend all possible options. Sorry if that came off as rude or disrespectful to your senior member status, it was not intended in that manor.
Not rude at all.
Just mildly comical when people are so careless as to repeatedly drop phones and then wonder why things go wrong and think software is going to help it. If you drop your phone REPEATEDLY you kind of have it coming. Well see him next asking glass replacement help hahaha.

As for releasing and renewing... Good point there, and he may also need a router reboot if DHCP is Hung.

That's actually a pretty harsh and rude assumption from a senior member. Just because i'm not up to speed on the development portion of my device does not mean I don't take care of it. Yeah it's been dropped. It happens. This happened to be one of the VERY few times i don't have it in my Speck Candy Shell or Seidio Surface cases. I try to take care of my investments.

I've done a router and modem reboot a few times now (when I thought that was cause of the issue).
Haven't done the IP release and re negotiation before.
I have a fix for dropping your phone. Its really simple. Save up and pay for one full price. After dropping 500+ on the phone you will not drop it more then once.
Also, I just took the battery cover off and noticed that i'm missing one of the 2 screws that are supposed to be there. The one closest to the top, by the connectors on the door. Wondering if that may be causing and issue as well?
I doubt it dude. It might, but if the gold pronged are making contact, you should be good. I assume you have cleared your browser cache on the phone or at least done an actual reboot to clear temp files? I know sometimes I have force stop the problematic apps and clear their cache if my internet shows connected bit doesn't seem to work.

FP1 radio = still snap crackle & pop

So I flashed the new radio onto my device (TweakStock with kernel version 2.6.35.7-EP4-g311a209). Baseband confirms FP1.
Still get snap, crackle and pop on calls whenever I change the volume during a call.
Hate this phone compared to my old Fassy.
Maybe if you stop adding milk it won't snap crackle and pop?
Have you tried a warranty replacement?
Sent from my handheld Linux computer using electromagnetic radiation.
Doesn't the kernel communicate between the hardware and software? Perhaps you need the FP1 kernel as well to get all the benefits mentioned in the update package.
I have updated to full FP1 stock, but I have never had the popping/crackling issue so I can't tell you if it makes a difference.
Wrong thread
I am still getting the static/pop and I am completely stock. I going to go back to a EP4D rom later this week.

As imnuts said in another thread, the fix is most likely a combined radio+kernel update. You shouldn't expect it to fix anything if you're still running EP4D. I haven't experienced any call quality issues whatsoever running Nitro's FP1.
Fwiw I've never had a sound issue w/volume changes, Froyo, gummy, various leaks, ep4x, fp1 stock, or eclipse ohm Food modem. Very rare static on outgoing calls, like 5 since 6/11, but that's it. Maybe hardware?

Made a few calls, did the usual things to reproduce the issue....I *think* I heard it happening on one of my calls. I'll have to make a few more but so far I'm not hopeful
I just hope it fixes the rare, but horribly loud shrieking that has hurt my ears on a few occasions. Admittedly, I don't think I've had that problem since the EP4D radios, but...
I still drop calls on these radios. I don't think I can tell a difference with these radios, however, it does sortof seem like I get a bit more throughput. What boggles my mind is how insanely variable bandwidth and latency is on the cell networks. I can't ever seem to get consistent results unless its like 4am and the phone is on the case's stand, stationary. Even then the speedtest results vary a lot.
One interesting thing is that my connection appears to be more stable since I've un- 3G Turbocharged. That script seemed to make the radios more unstable. I've been comparing my Charge's 3G to the Verizon MiFi by Novatel, and I gotta say, the Charge does appear to be more stable and provide a better overall connection (except when it doesn't.)
Didn't want to derail, but I cannot scientifically conclude much about the radio performance- it seems to not suck as bad. Then again, I am not running the FP1 ROM or kernel...

Yeah that would be the only way to determine if it had any effect is comparing it to something like the MiFi before and after. Speeds in my area don't drop during busy hours or anything like that because on a mifi they stay steady around 20mbits all the time, apparently they aren't overcrowded yet. So I must say the new radios do seem more consistent. Before I would jump around from 5-20mbits. Now I'm constantly 18+mbits down and 15+mbits UP

Issue is not fixed. I am on stock and the first call i made after the upgrade I had static and pop. So lame. This is also my second replacement for the same issue.
I basically STILL get a "squeal" that lasts about 1/4 second and happens at random. I have updated to FP1 and it is still there!!! AHHH!
Any chance not mounting the system could affect the accuracy of the flash in CWM? I didn't mount before flashing. Now I went back and did it...we'll see.

Suspicion was confirmed, I still have the annoying snap/crackle/pop sounds while making phone calls
Horrible Shrieking
Though it happens very rarely, I've gotten an intermittent LOUD 1/4 second shrieking static sound during phone calls that makes my ears bleed and kills all puppies and kittens in my immediate vicinity. It only happens maybe once every few months but it will continue happening every few seconds until I end the call. This is my second Droid Charge, been through every ROM and radio under the Sun on both phones.
I'm now on TS1.4/PBJ/FP1 and it still happens. As mentioned above, it is likely a combined kernel/radio problem, so maybe going full stock FP1 will resolve it. It is such an infrequent issue, however, that I will probably just continue to deal with it.
Since I got EP4D radios, my data connection has been flawless (before EP4D I was better off using carrier pigeons), but the FP1 radios have given me a noticeable increase in speed. That said, I don't really need more than 25Mb/s, but now I get 40 down and 20 up according to Speedtest.

There is a thread out there someplace where a group of coworkers with the same phone narrowed it down to specific hardware versions of the charge. I used to have the problem as well but after calling for a replacement and receiving a device with a different hardware version, I've had no problem! Search for that thread....check you hardware version under your battery yo see if its one of the affected listed on that thread. For the life of me, I can't remember the thread title otherwise I'd just post it.

Should I get a replacement phone?

So I have had my s3 since around the 10th and I've loved it so far. Lately I have been having issues that surly aren't annoying but on the other hand im not exactly sure if a software update would fix anyone of these things. As of now I am not rooted at all and everything is stock. These are my main problems for the phone
1.) While texting on stock messaging app (I just love the stock app) the keyboard constantly freezes up while im texting
2.) Screen flickers yet not too drastically
3.) For some reason when I try to set my custom vibration pattern it only stays as the basic call vibration and only changes when im getting a phone call.
Like I said these issues really aren't drastic and im not sure if it really warrants a replacement phone at all. I talked to the VZW tech support and she said that its up to me really because I am deff able to get one for these issues. The only thing that made me have second thoughts was the fact that she said most likely im getting a "certified like new phone" meaning that its basically been used before and im not sure if I should really trust it. Anyways im really on the fence about this so if anyone can give me some in sight id really appreciate it.
ps: I did factory resets and everything and it still has not fixed these issues

Ok thanks ill do just that. My final question now is does this count as rooting my phone? just in case I do end up sending back my phone I dont want there to be any problems with it
Turn off Settings | Display | Auto adjust screen tone to address the flicker problem.
The keyboard is probably searching predictive text; I've only used the stock KB for a few minutes. Wife and I use SwiftKey without any problems (including right now).
I have vibration disabled completely, so I can't even guess on that one (I can't even find the option you're talking about and I know I've seen it before!)

reason #2 is enough to try and get it swapped.
That is a hardware issue, and will only get worse.
I have had a dozen smartphones, and anything that CONNECTS stuff (headphone jack to the motherboard, cables connecting screens etc) only get worse until they stop working entirely.
Good luck!

Flashing the stock image through Odin is not the same as rooting your phone. It would not trip the flash counter so you could still return it if you wish.

I am having an issue with GPS on my TF101. ive tried a few different Team EOS and CM roms but doesnt seem to have an effect. I am currently running EOS 81 (last EOS that still works with wiimote). I just get no satellites connected. Below are two logcat logs, one from K.A.T when i try to install the GPS quickfix i get an error, then the other is starting GPS Status.
Im starting to wonder if my GPS is actually broken and it's not a software issue.
Please help, even if it is just to say my GPS is properly shagged.

Edit:
I just tried EOS 113 and the K.A.T. GPS Fix installed successfully, however still no luck in GPS status. Logcat:

Strange not to get any fixes at all, mine takes a while but does eventually lock on
When you say K.A.T, do you mean KatKernel or the Kat-App ?
Kat-App has some GPS fixes in it
And not to sound arrogant but you are trying to get a fix outdoors under a clear sky ?

I'm not great with logcats, hopefully a dev will have a look at them for you

Hey,
Thanks for your response.
I mean the KAT-App, it has a GPS fix that wouldnt apply but i eventually go it that working. it didn't however fix my issues.
As for clear sky, apart from the crappy UK cloudy weather i'm all clear sitting outside on a bench (and within wifi reach, winning!).
Im starting to think its a hardware failure but not sure how to test.
Thanks,
Piercy

Don't forget the tf101 was always plagued with a crappy GPS. Some say the aluminum case, some say weak signal from the hardware. There are tweaks and such to the GPS.conf file but I gave up on it.

yeah, it's a shame cos id love things like google now to work. Plus i wanted to try ingress and as im stuck on this crappy iPhone for a couple more months it would of been nice to get it going.
Ah well, back onto 4.1 and using it as an emulator
Thanks all that tried,

Until I went back to stock and started over with root and flashing a new ROM, I had the same exact issues with GPS. I know it sounds strange; but, after a year plus of flashing, my system was laggy, the GPS would never work, and had intermittent sound issues. While that may be more than you are experiencing, it still may be an issue. So, after making a huge mistake of wiping everything off my system (no ROM at all) and having nearly having an expensive paper weight, I went back to ground zero. After the process of going back to an Asus stock ROM, rooting, and flashing Team EOS, Kat Kernel, and the Kat app, my Transformer was better than new. GPS works perfect, sound has no issues, no random reboots, and blazing fast.
So, it might be worth a try of starting entirely over... just a thought. :silly:

I feel your pain. My situation is absolutely the same. I beleive it could have started after I used the chinese car charger and power bank on vacation. Did you use something like that?

The problem is in the touchscreen firmware and the fix have to be released from synaptics and not frome Oneplus.
The fact is that it may take a few or a long time based on the issue and it may be enven never be fixed, who knows.
As now i am really disappointed. They should have never release da device knowing of such a major bug.

No, nothing related to the charger tho haha. the problem started as soon as i turn on the phone for the first time and it went crazy like that since then. i flashed almost every rom on here still no good. i flashed fusionjack slimsaber rom earlier and it really improved alot . you might want to check that rom out.i'm gonna stick w/ slimsaber for a while now i guess

Thx for the advice. For me the issue seems to be solved randomly when I restored the 33R in Twrp. However some other problems remain: like not getting back to the mobile Internet after leaving the wifi area or loseing the network at all ( curable by switching on and off the airplane mode or rebooting respectively).
My phone is cursed really xD

I'm not sure if this is the same issue, but when you run a touch screen test, does it work with more than one touch? IE is multitouch working? I had an issue the other day and I resolved it by turning off the phone, attaching it to the charger and then turning it back on (read it on the oneplus forum). It is a known issue and they are working on bringing us the fix.
Hope this is helpful.
I have this issue too, although it's been mitigated somewhat by the most recent software patches they pushed in 30O and 33R. I'm on a CM nightly at the moment and it's certainly usable. I made the issue a lot better by disabling haptic feedback in the SwiftKey settings - it almost feels like that extra effort to run the vibrating motor causes the screen to respond badly or something.
Is it doing this?

If so this is what mine is doing and it's soooo annoying trying to type.

Some-not me, have been able to mitigate the problem by running a code through terminal emulator.
This has been brought up in CM bug log as Bacon 55.
You don't have to be rooted to do this.
Type: su (if you're rooted)
Type: cat /sys/class/input/input0/baseline_test
Press enter.
Note that you will need to do this every time you reboot your phone.
Credits to a member on jira cm. Forgot to name! Hope it works for you
I've tried everything and everything failed.
Let's hope synaptics pushes out a fix soon. I can't stand this issue. Basically two different touches near each other are recognized as a swype -_-'
i did a test using multitouch test app. i use 1 finger touch on the phone and got a red dot, finger #2 gave me a blue dot . as soon as my 2 fingers get close together 1 of the dot disappear, also test w/ 4 5 fingers same result .thats why if you text really fast , you get alot of missing words and sometime it lag and get stuck.
I think that until this gets fixed the phone will be not ready to be sold,too...

Is this phone worth purchasing since customer service is not readily available. I'm not sure if I want to spend my money and not be able to get quality customer service. What are your thoughts?

As long as the touchscreen issue is not fixed the phone has to be considered to be bugged and faulty. I would not spend my money on a defective phone at a very few weeks from N6 release that will be a superior terminal by far.
Even if it gets fixed it will be not worthy the same as N& is near to come anyways.
I wish i didn't buy mine.

Thanks, I started becoming more concerned because users have been paying long wait times for service and possibly having to ship back to China at the customers cost. That's a bad deal.

Definitely. I would stay away from this thing.
And by the way who knows if the ghost touches/swypes problem is not even a software issue just as the multitouch not working when placing the phone on a non-conductive surface...
