Crappy wifi? - HTC Inspire 4G

i usually never have any trouble with the WiFi on my phone, but for some reason the wifi is seriously failing the last couple days. I'm connecting to the same wifi network my computer is on and the computer is running very fast. Is it possible to mess with the wifi adapter?

Have you taken off your battery cover lately? I believe the wifi connections are back there and if you have taken off the battery cover, they might not touching all the way giving spotty wifi...

Yep tried that. Everything is connecting tight.
I dropped the phone the day I started having the issue but it was only about a foot long drop, and the bottom of the phone hit the ground first.
Could that be affecting anything? I dropped my iPhone 3GS more times than i've dropped my Inspire and i never had trouble with the wifi in that. Not trying to knock the Inspire because i couldnt stand anything about the iPhone when i had it.

Don't be careless and drop phones! That deserves any wifi issues lol

Tough to tell ya know. Each drop will do something different, I mean I've dropped my phone from my balcony and no problems...I'm going to make a bold assumption that you're rooted? If you are, reflash the ROM and see if that will help.

Re-flashing will completely wipe the phone correct? I haven't devled into the world of flashing and re-flashing roms. I've only rooted, flashed CM7, and updated the nighties as they were available.

To be honest I would do a nand back up and flash a Non CM based rom and see if it helps.

I went into Recovery and didnt see anything that said Nand back up but i did see an option for Backup / Restore which I went into and created a backup.
Is there more to a nand backup?

No that is a nand backup. It backs up your whole rom.

I usually stick to sense ROMs, but this should be universal. once I had that problem and flashed a new kernel and it was better than ever. Might want to give that a shot if your reflash doesn't work or you don't want to reflash.

He dropped his phone. I doubt that suddenly made a kernel or rom act up.

Ok I'll give you that. I have also dropped mine. I'm just throwing out possible options for him. Possibly his battery jarred and a config file in his kernel controlling his wifi power corrupted. or something got moved and is interfering with the wifi signal but his computer antenna is strong enough compensate. Yes highly unlikely, I know. Like I said, just trying to expend all possible options. Sorry if that came off as rude or disrespectful to your senior member status, it was not intended in that manor.

Not rude at all.
Just mildly comical when people are so careless as to repeatedly drop phones and then wonder why things go wrong and think software is going to help it. If you drop your phone REPEATEDLY you kind of have it coming. Well see him next asking glass replacement help hahaha.

Have you tried releasing the ip address and re negotiating a connection?

Haha good point... And mine is in the otterbox so... I mean the worst I have done was dropped it in the blender. Is that too bad to fix? Jk
As for releasing and renewing... Good point there, and he may also need a router reboot if DHCP is Hung.

That's actually a pretty harsh and rude assumption from a senior member. Just because i'm not up to speed on the development portion of my device does not mean I don't take care of it. Yeah it's been dropped. It happens. This happened to be one of the VERY few times i don't have it in my Speck Candy Shell or Seidio Surface cases. I try to take care of my investments.

I've done a router and modem reboot a few times now (when I thought that was cause of the issue).
Haven't done the IP release and re negotiation before.

I have a fix for dropping your phone. Its really simple. Save up and pay for one full price. After dropping 500+ on the phone you will not drop it more then once.

Also, I just took the battery cover off and noticed that i'm missing one of the 2 screws that are supposed to be there. The one closest to the top, by the connectors on the door. Wondering if that may be causing and issue as well?

I doubt it dude. It might, but if the gold pronged are making contact, you should be good. I assume you have cleared your browser cache on the phone or at least done an actual reboot to clear temp files? I know sometimes I have force stop the problematic apps and clear their cache if my internet shows connected bit doesn't seem to work.

Dropping Data is killing me!!!

Ok I have been reading some but cant find all that I need. I live in VA and right now the city I live in has no 4g it will soon I hope but I know what soon means to VZW because I had the fassy before. But anyways I went in and turned it on to cdma only for right now so it wouldn’t be always looking for 4g I hope that is the right thing to do. But even before I did that I keep dropping from 3g to nothing to 1x to nothing then back to 3g. The bars never change and it is at places I have full bars. It killing me because I use Pandora all the time and it will go about 2 songs then drop and I have to wait like 10 mins for it to work its self around to start playing again. I was only stock for one day but couldn’t take it anymore so I used odin and flashed gummycharge 1.9.1. I love the rom but the dropping data is killing me. Do any of yall know anything to do for this or do I need to call VZW about it and if I do should I flash back to stock before I call or what. My wife has a charge and its all stock she wont let me touch it and she hasn’t said anything about dropping data. Is this a phone problem or is it a sim card problem?
This is a common issue with no known workaround. Sorry.

I was sent a new SIM card after complaining of this same problem. I would say it decreased the dropouts by 75% but they still happen occasionally.

It's all over a LOT of forums out there. Flashing gummycharged has helped immensely for me, but YMMV.
You may believe it's the placebo effect, but straight up, its been a night and day difference. I'm a firm believe in the fact that it's software related and Verizon needs to get it fixed, and fast.
Their "resolution" for me was to send me a refurb phone, I told them to sit and spin cause I've been down that route before and it aint gonna happen again.
Yea I might flash back to stock tonight and see how it goes and if it keeps doing it I will see if a new sim card will help.

Ok so get this last night after I dropped data for like the 100th time I got pissed I started opening all my apps as fast as I could. I was turning on data turning it right back off turning on WiFi turning it off like as fast as I could. well my phone went all to hell locked up tighter then a nun. But then it did so crazy stuff and the pull down menu thing was showing but I couldn't turn on or off anything like data or GPS. but I could hold in the power button and it would let me restart and stuff so I restarted it. on boot up it could not find my sim card so I was thinking great I f'ed it up well it made me restart again on this boot up it found my sim card. now with heavy Pandora uses I have yet to drop data. So in other words I kicked my phones ass and now it knows I'm the boss lol.

Sim card not allowing connections? [Help]

Flashed a few roms on my phone and never bricked it whats so ever. It shows the IMEI, how ever it doesnt match the IMEI it have on on the back of the phone. The phone came with 2.2.1 Froyo and i upgraded it with ODIN using KJ6 2.3.6 GB rom. I can connect to wifi and such. It's not the sim card cause it works with all my friends tmobile phones. I get bars on the phone with the sim card in it. But when i attempt to make a call it says "Not registered to Network" i went to Settings>Wireless and network>Mobile Networks>Access Point Names, i went there to do the APN Manually i tried setting it to Default and it didnt help either.
Anyone know's how to fix this?

I got all day to try to fix this. I don't want to try reflashing things cause i don't know if i can mess it up or cause more problems.
So.... you have flashed a few ROMs..... meaning you have at least ONE nandroid back up from when the phone worked?
If you do... you are good to go. If you don't..... good luck to you. You have what sounds like a generic IMEI.

Well i don't, didn't know i have to. So in other words it's impossible to get this phone back on?
I had the same issue with my phone, it just wouldn't stay on Network, and the SIM would go back and forth from being recognized or not. I flashed back to stock and it still didn't work. The ten minute battery pull was suggested in another thread and a few people swear it works. Mine played up before this was suggested so I never tried it.
I had the same thing happen with my wifes phone and all I could link it to was the Kj6 modem...see link below. I reflashed the whole ROM and it came back.
With my phone I just called T-Mo and told them that since I upgraded to 2.3.6 via Kies that my phone wasn't working properly (Technically true, but a little stretch). I flashed Bhundvens 1click to stock, factory reset, etc...etc... then paid $20 and got a replacement phone via UPS in about 4 days.
I not saying you are having the same problem as I did, but it sounds very similar.
As a side note, the replacement SGS4G (refurb) they sent me absolutely blows my original handset out of the water when it comes to signal strength. I get solid 4G speeds of 5MB+ in my house, where before I only got patchy edge. I was amazed at the huge difference in performance between two supposedly identical handsets.
I hope you can get this remedied without an exchange, but you should be able to get a new one for $20 as a last resort.

Back ups are suggested all over this forum. Now you know. It is not impossible... google 'generic imei' and look at the dozens of ways people have had success and failure trying to remedy it. There are a ton of threads in the SGS 4G forum alone.
And whether you fix it or get a new phone... make a back up of your efs folder FIRST thing along with a nandroid back up. It will save your ass if this ever happens again.

phone keeps shutting off

In the past month I bought a used mytouch 4g slide off ebay in good working order. Lately though the phone keeps shutting off on me whenever I try to do anything. The phone is rooted with S-ON OFF.
I have installed many different roms but of late they all seem to be shutting off. I had this problem but it only happened every few days beforehand. After install of the rom I am waiting around 7 minutes before using my phone. Right now I'm back to my G2, which in my opinion feels better and battery last longer. I also dislike Sense but the camera is fantastic compared to the G2.
I have used Bulletproof 1.1, DoubleShot Lite 1.2.3, and MikTouch-0.7 and all had the same problem.

Definitely a hardware problem. Multiple roms should not all have that same problem. Either your battery, battery connection might be bad. But with such a general problem, it can be nearly anything

Phone Powering off by itself Solved!
So I have bought several phones over the past year cause of this same problem. I take it to the service provider for troubleshooting and all they keep telling me is its a hardware issue. They do a hard restart and blah blah blah. Long story short. IT NEVER FIXES THE PROBLEM... BUT.... I realized it was the battery slipping loose. every time you place the phone down it gently slips out of place. Of course it doesn't fall out cause the phone has a back. So. I just taped my battery to the inside of my phone. PROBLEM SOLVED!!!! Did this with my Samsung Conquer 4g... and with my friends 4g slide. It stopped the mysterious powering off, Try it and see it if works for you! Hope this helps someone!

I'm going to say its a hardware problem but my phone has been on for days now, though I'm not using it as I'm using my old G2.
A part of me just wants to stay with the G2 but I miss the excellent camera on the 4g slide. Of course I need to find a use for the slide though. Gotta love turning a very minor decision into a big deal.
If you're going to go used . if you have your area supported in craigslist buy it from there. Then atleast you can check for full functionality before you fork any dough over. I dont think ive ever bought a new phone in my life and never got a lemon
I've bought most of my phone's used and never had a problem. I would get a new phone but my phone selection is limited due to the QWERTY and good camera I want.
My phone tends to turn off when connected to WiFi with WiFi calling on... or at least it used to with stock and the CM 7 kang, but I haven't tried other ROMs.
Since the CM 9 alpha just got WiFi calling, I haven't had much time to test for that yet.
Have you tried not using WiFi or WiFi calling?
Hi all,
I'm having a similar shut off issue, only mu phone is fully stock. No root, no s-off, and no rom. It seems to be completely at random either by using the browser or any app or no app at all(after I've set my phone down, I've tried using it only to find it shut off). I did a factory reset and the problem persist, though not as often. Any ideas? Thanks!

I did. Same thing happened with the replacement. I rarely use WiFi and I make sure WiFi calling's off when I do use it. I thought it might be an app but so far, it's turned out to be the battery. I got the phone in February so I didn't think it would go bad so soon. Got an Anker and been restart free since.

[Q] SK4G dropping keystrokes randomly

I've been looking around for any mentions of this for a while now, but i only found vague mentions of it a while back. I thought it'll eventually get fixed in one of the custom roms.
I'm starting to think this is an isolated case since no one is mentioning it at all. (or it's me going crazy. i hope not.)
When trying the key test in the recovery, it doesn't seem to drop anything at all, but when booting android, it drops whenever i type fast enough.
Can anyone confirm whether or not their phone drops keys randomly when typing?

this problem can be fixed from what i've read by using NXD's kernel as well

On the SK4G, keys are dropped at random when typing fast.
on the E4G, keys are dropped when repeating the same character quickly (eg. hello, according to that post anyway)

yeah... just figured id offer the only advice i could, aside from his device being messed up. i think its still worth a shot

well, thanks for the attempt, but it's still the same. I doubt it's hardware-related, since the keytest in recovery isn't dropping keys.
Yeah, the Epic 4G was WAY worse lol. I actually contacted the dev. that pretty much fixed the problem on the Epic, and he was curious and took a look at the SK. He said indeed that the SK shouldn't suffer nearly the same keyboard woes. But he did make a little patch for us anyway, to try and improve some other stuff, but it was never put into a kernel I don't think.
I do get a missed keystroke on this device every now and then, but not too often.

Sounds good. I wonder what happened to that patch though, and whether or not it worked.

Well, i noticed it happens VERY randomly. sometimes it's just once every 10 messages in gtalk, sometimes, it hits twice or thrice in a single message. drives me crazy :/
Lol, I hear ya. That patch was posted, possibly even in the thread you linked, so it might still be there. Sduvick didn't feel motivated to add it to a kernel, and even tho it is simple, my patching skills were limited, so it never got tested.
I'll see if I can find where the interaction took place, and see if the patch link is still good.
This is me typing as fast as I can I drop keystrokes all the tim but it only seems to be the e the g and sometimes t I think its a hardware problem I'm not looking at the screen at all so you can see where the keystrokes might be dropping also I've had sidekicks since 2007 so I'm used to the full keyboard and typing extremely fast on it lol lalalalalala typey typey typey...
And now a few 4 letter words typed 20 tmes in a row watch for drops
Time time time time time time time time time time tim time time time time time time time time time
Ding ding ding ding din ding ding ding ding ding digng ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding
Dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt dirt
And there you have it looking back on this post now I dropped a total of 2 e's and 1 g.
Currently running reactives cm6 merge v 2.1.0

as i've said, it drops them VERY randomly. And for some reason, it doesn't drop, or at least as much as during regular use, when you start testing for drops. That, or maybe we're testing it wrong.
In my case, I'm getting drops on seemingly all of the keys. Sometimes on T. Sometimes Space. Sometimes even Return. etc.
Can anyone else test in the recovery key test under advanced just to make sure it's not hardware related?

this problem can be fixed from what i've read by using NXD's kernel as well

It's worth a try, although I still don't see how the changes I made would alleviate dropped keystrokes. The printk logging statements have close to zero overhead compared to the rest of the Android stack.

If you can find the patch, I will try to integrate it into my kernel.

Just to be sure, would you check what kernel version shows up under Settings -> About Phone?
I'm wondering if perhaps sometimes, the kernel is failing to flash.

It's possibly the vibrate motor. It's not unheard of for them to go out.

+1. Hardware issue.
Still Charged Up
sounds like a personal problem - wore out your vibrator... j/k
never heard of that though - have you tried reflashing the ROM or resetting your sound settings?
tried everything but refreshing back from ep4. I was really hoping it wasn't hardware. wtf do I do now? haha
If you rule everything else out and it is the motor, it can be replaced if you don't mind a little disassembly. It's typically one of the easier repairs to do. In most phone, it's just a little round, flat cylinder, about the size of a small watch or hearing aid battery, clipped to the motherboard and connected by two wires.
how much would that cost and where do I buy the motor?
I'm pretty sure the motor is actually integrated (as in soldered) onto the board. Assuming you can actually find the motor, it's going to be a PITA desoldering and soldering that sucker. Why not just get your Charge replaced?

What I have done. (I also have insurance)
ODIN with PIT
In the middle of re-partitioning with the PIT pull the plug and disconnect all battery sources.
When you turn it back on It will say to connect to the computer and download mode will not
work... Take it to the store and tell them that the vibrate alert stopped working. You checked
to see if there was an update and there was. Take the update and then this showed up. Works
every time for me >.< Any time I frail up my phone I incorrectly PIT it and make an excuse to
get another one bahaha

THIS IS WHY WE CANT HAVE NICE THINGS.
But yeah, that'll work, but make up some other excuse than taking the update, FP5 is too mature for this to work, but then again a VZW employee likely wouldn't know on a phone this old.

I use swap and my vibrate works just fine.
Sent from my AOSPA N7 controlled by Metallice's a32 Kernel.
I've had my charge since the day after it came out haha waiting on the s4 to upgrade I don't think they'll give me any more charges (I'm on #4). But not having vibrate sucks. I did hear that swap was doing this to some people and I have swap activated, I'm going to try that out for size, will report back
so i don't think replacing my charge is a possibility (unless I pull the this phone is f#@$!ng terrible card) which I'm not in the mood to do. Also, disabling swap did not help wiped dalvik also just in case that could affect anything. I was scared my phone stopped accepting charge and was about to re-partition my phone last night but it was 4am and my phone decided to work again so that's probably the last thing I can do and I'll do it when I've got some free time this weekend and report back for anyone having this same issue.
on a semi-related note what are you guys planning on upgrading to? I want to wait for the moto x but would rather get the S4 because I like what samsung has been doing with extra features in their version of android, but also the HTC M7 looks super appealing and its not mumbo jumbo like the s4

I went with the ThunderBolt. HUGE ROMS but still one of the best LTE phones out ( as in being like a tank and being sturdy)
