[Q] Screen problem - Transformer TF300T Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I bought a tf300t and i think i have a screen problem.
In the upper right and lower left right corner, the screen has two areas more clear than in the other parts.
For example, if i set max brightness and i view a black image, i can see theme easily:
h*tp://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/259/dsc0046wu.jpg/
Is it a problem of my tf300 or is it normal?
What do you suggest to do? Should i change my tablet or not?
Thank you.

Brighter areas on edges when screen is dark are common problem with LED highlighting and in most cases this is not a factory fault (just technology limit) but if this bright areas are also clearly visible when screen is displaying desktop or movie or game etc. you should contact a service.
My tablet also have this problem but areas are almost invisible during nornal usage and do not bother me
I'm a little bit concerned about this small but intense area on bottom left side - light is not as much distributed as it should but also this shouldn't be a problem during normal work with tablet.

Screen bleed, all these have them but yours seem alot worse.
Could try swap it out for another one but could be worse

In your opinion, should i change the tablet?

I think - if you can change - change it and test the LED on other tf300t in shop before change

[Q] Transformer B60 vs B50 Screen/Color Temperature - Which one should I keep?

Hey,
I'm really loving the transformer, but am getting tired of the build issues/quality control. My first asus transformer had wifi issues (verified by asus support) and awful backlight issues. I returned this for a new one (B50 revision) that has no backlight issues, but has awful creaking on the left side. The right side speaker is better than the left, but I can live with this.
With the awful creaking on the left side I decided to get a third (and now fourth transformer) to compare. These 3rd and 4th models are B60 revisions. The 3rd is unacceptable, but the 4th has no creaking (at least not yet) - When I move the two tablets the power button shakes/makes a noise.
Here's my question/concern- at the same brightness level (whether 50%, 100%, or somewhere in between) the color temperature/screen display of the B50 is MUCH superior than the B60. Using the default background, on the B50 model I find the blue sky to actually be blue and the white color/text of the unlock screen to be white.
On the B60, the blue sky is grayish and the white text/color on the unlock screen is a little yellowed. This is on both tablet 3 and tablet 4 (B60 revision)
If I never had a B50 to compare it to, I might be fine. But there is a big difference and I think that you would all agree screen quality is most important. (I mean, that's what you stare at when using the tablet) - The B60's just look a little washed.
Here's what I'm wondering- are all B60's this way? Has anyone compared the two screens? And, do you think I should just keep the B50 and deal with the creaks (because eventually my B60's will get them) or am I better off just adjusting to the lesser screen and keeping tablet 4 as its build is a little better?
I need to send two of the tablets back soon and unsure how to proceed.
Also, is there any way to adjust the color temperate/contrast/other settings?
Anyone experiencing color issues?
Your help is really appreciated, thanks!
I'm not trying to be a troll, but I am getting sick of these threads that are flooding the general section. Just pick the one that you want. The chance of getting one that is perfect and has no flaws seems to be very slim. Just weigh the pros and cons of each and decide for yourself what is more important (in this case creaking or screen quality).
I understand what you're saying, but I'm trying to find out if anyone else notices the color temperature is off on their B60? Everyone raves about this things IPS screen, but if the color is dull than I don't want to keep it. (Maybe I have two defective units, or maybe Asus changed the way they calibrate these things) And finally, I wanted to know if there is a way to adjust the screen other than changing brightness.

Does it matter if anyone else notices it? No one else paid for your device. It obviously sounds like you want the screen of the b5, and the creaking isnt that awful.

Yes, I agree with what you just said, but am wondering if I try another b6 if it will improve.
The power button makes a noise when you move it? Is that really that big of a deal to you?
You've already gone through four units, give it a rest already.
Cool down people !!!
Being a hobby photographer myself noticing, that many other photographers use the TF, I think it's a very interesting find, that the B60's seem to have a very different color temperature than the B50's.
That was one of the reasons for MY decision to buy it ... the colors on my TF (B50) are great compared to the other current tablets, except the iPad.
But it's right, chances are nearly zero to get a perfect unit ... mine has slight light bleed and one dust speck under the screen glass, everything else is fine. Nevertheless I keep it to avoid getting an even worse unit.

I had the b50 and now the b60 and immediately noticed the warmer screen on the b60. colors are definitely not the same. i'm used to working on calibrated monitors for my work so i'm pretty sure it isn't just my mind playing tricks on me.

It has been reported elsewhere here too ... the B60 has a warmer color space ... there it was called "more yellow white tones".

I think we just need a "technical hardware problems" thread so that we don't have twenty threads a day saying I have this technical hardware problem!
It is confirmed that B60 tablet has warmer color than B50. See pic below. When put them side by side, B60 color looks terrible. Just my opinion. Maybe it look better for others.

It's has a different color temperature ... seems closer to 6500 kelvin often used for desktop publishing and photo editing.
The B50 has a higher color temperature with more blue tones.
I have a B60, and there is no yellow where there should be white. If I compare with the pictures from the last post the screen looks like the B50.

Hi. I just wanted to chime in.
I happen to own a B40 and have two B60's that I purchased for family. I did notice that the B60's have more of a yellowish hint on white (lower color temp) compared to my B40 with a cooler color temp, but has anyone also noticed a difference in brightness? My B40 looks much brighter than the B60's with brightness settings turned all the way up on both (about 10-15% brighter)
One other thing I noticed (isn't related to the screen), is that even though the B40 suffers from the audio balance issue whereas the B60 fixed it, the older revision has overall louder volume. It's as if they lowered the volume of the right speaker to match the left speaker, which match the volume of the newer batch TF's.
Anyway, that's it.
Oh, here's a picture of both screens side by side with both at max settings:

Nice comparision shot, which shows both color temperature and brightness difference.
Though most people might prefer the B40 in this regard, it tends a bit too far into the blue for accurate photo viewing, except in bright daylight.
I wish the TF's color temperatur would be adjustable ... this would be very helpful for photographers, who use it for photo presentations.

I have B40. I didn't notice audio balance issue but the volume of the speakers is... random. Sometimes it's great, sometimes it's too low to discern what people are talkin in videos. It happens on the same videos. There is sth wrong with setting the volume. Also I find the colour temperature is a little too high.
hey he paid 400-500 bucks for somthing that is flawed wha is wrong with wanting to get something that has nothing wrong with it

Strange Line on the Screen

Not sure how to explain the problem and if I had a better camera I would take a picture to illustrate.
I've had my TF700 for about 3 days now and just noticed a 1 pixel wide line that is about 1.5 inches long, running horizontally about 1/3 of the way down from the top when holding the tablet with the ASUS logo on the top and is right smack-dab in the center. The line appears on every application so I'm guessing it is a hardware issue. The line is most noticeable when the screen is displaying a white background. Yet, all the colors are displayed correctly. I can even see the line when the power is off and I'm holding the screen at the right angle in the light. I do have a Zagg screen protector on the tablet but I don't want to take it off to see if that is problem.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else has the same problem and should I get the tablet replaced?
Ok there are some pictures that I took hopefully the line is apparent on them.
Anyone else experiencing this? (note the redbox is not the problem, but where the problem is located.)
That would drive me crazy - I would definitely return for a new one or RMA (depending on how long ago you purchased it)... That is *not* normal....

I've JUST got this, down the left side on my 2 day old tab. I believe it is because my screen is seated badly and probably has been the insides somehow. Contacted amazon.de they will replace it as they have stock now.

"Official Response" from Asus about Screen Flex, clicking

I'vd had my TF700 for about 2 weeks now. When I first got it, there was little to none screen edge clicking. But now, entire top edge of the screen clicks when I gently press it. I am not pressing it hard at all to make the screen click. I have no other issues with the infinity. I thought about returning it for a new one, but I've read so many other defects such as no update issue, light bleeds, dead pixels, etc. So I called Asus customer service and explained the situation. They said it was normal for gorilla glass to have a little "flex" and make a sound. But they also said that if the screen was separating, then I should return it.
Now, I read couple of threads about this issue, but I don't know whether I have the flex problem or the screen separation issue.
Should I return it?
Absolutely, mine has no problem at all, return it to the dealer and ask for a replacement...that is what I will do..
Well if Asus is telling you to return a problematic tab...then I guess maybe that might be the thing to do.
I'm hoping I can get a second refurbed Infinity in the coming weeks for cheap-o...
Unfortunately, I imported mine from the us so a return is pretty unlikely, plus, its unlocked.

I too have the clicking, and it does not dock. no connection is made
I too had the clicking sound, on the right side of my screen, right above the speaker. It was not very loud, but it was noticeable. The lower right corner had some give to it when I pushed down on it as well. This in combination with the light bleed on the right edge of my screen and a lighter patch that would appear on the left side during boot up made me exchange my table with amazon. My new tablet has none of the clicking issues with the screen, and feels more solid, the light bleed on the right side of the screen is just about the same, but the light patch on the left is gone. Granted, the light bleed is only noticeable during boot up, so I'm not worried about that as much.

Problems

I am going to buy this tablet very soon but i heard from some people that there are some problems with it like lines flickering over screen and creaking bezels is this true or is it already fixed?
Both of those issues are still present. Black lines are still there and bezel creaks on every one of the units I have seen.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
Yes it is still present but those are actually EXTREMELY minor issues. Every electronic you buy will have something wrong with it. If its not when you buy it then probably later on. Why it is suggested to not unlock your tab for 2-3 months to make sure its working correctly.

Me thinks that you have an issue with the TF700
Oh how dreadful, the case creaks... Have you ever held an sgs3 or a galaxy tab2? Sounds more like a lousy horror flick.
You're obviously no gamer, or you'd know well enough the black lines are a vsync screentearing problem, and they happen with every app not designed to handle the device's higher resolution and refresh rate. Blame the devs, not the device. (face it, no other device has this high resolution, and the one that (nexus) does has people complaining about the same bloody thing.)

Not really - vsync-related screen tearing does not cause black lines and also is only visible with movement (especially horizontal movement). This effect appears on static images.
After a lot of research, my current theory about the black lines is that for some yet unknown reason the display controller is blocked from reading the framebuffer for a short time. Since the DC needs to refresh the panel 60 times per second, it must be able to continuously stream data from the framebuffer RAM to the display.
At 1920*1200 with a pixel clock of 154 MHz, the line rate is about 74 kHz - so shutting off the DC's RAM access for only 1/74000 second would cause a full black scanline.

For what it's worth, here's my anecdotal evidence having owned an Infinity since November:
- No black lines whatsoever. But I do *rarely* get some flickering (the whole screen seems to bounce left and right) that only lasts a split second. Some apps *do* get the occasional graphics glitch, such as non-textured polygons. Overall, it's nothing I ever think about and doesn't detract me from the tablet one bit.
- Don't know what you mean by creaking bezels - all around the screen? Or just the dock connection? I don't have any creaking. The dock connection does feel "looser" than in the beginning, but it never changes position. The tablet is heavy enough that you can easily cause it to tumble backward when docked, but if left alone it never falls back. I prefer the light weight of the tablet+dock to a solution with a heavier dock.
Overall I'm very very happy with this tablet. My only gripe is the office suites aren't perfect MS Office replacements (yet? ). Other than that I've been using it LOCKED and ROOTED on stock 4.2.1 for web browsing, laptop replacement (Word/PDF viewing and editing), gaming and e-book reader without major issues.
As I said in the beginning, this is purely anecdotal since I don't know anyone else who owns this tablet. Hope it helps!

Galaxy S IV - Screen, display, auto brightness, etc explained

As it seems there are a few threads on auto brightness and color issues, i figure i should do the best i can to explain how it works on the S4, and mobiles in general. I work in Television/Film and have been shooting for almost a decade.
ANY QUESTIONS, feel free to PM me, i'll probably ask for very specific photo's (ISO/WB and other data) so i can help you in a professional manner, and i'll try to reply within 6-8 hours. No one should live with a bum screen!
To fully understand what im trying to express, load the attached image onto your phone, and on a bright sunny afternoon, print out the attached image on a small piece of decent photo paper, grab your phone, and find a room in your house that has only fluorescent lights and close any windows or shutters.
Look at the photo in the sunlight; note the colors. Now go inside to the fluorescent dark room, note the change in what the colors look like, and that white is still pretty white (thats your brain), then turn your camera flashlight on (LED), and note the changes in color again (some reds may look purplish or greens bluish), but white still looks kinda white (should look very light blue). Now repeat and look at the print out versus the same image on your phone screen; it should match best under 6500k lighting, but still be off (thats a printed image vs monitor thing though). Also depends on your printer ink type (dye/pigment), color space, etc etc etc. Your eyes take raw data in, but your brain does the magic, and says 'nope, thats white', so you perceive it as 'white' or 'white enough' and you 'know' it is meant to 'represent' white.
Hardware - This includes an ambient light sensor. The way these work is similar to metering systems in cameras; they measure the amount of light hitting a photodiode. Even in high end (DSLR) cameras, sometimes the light meters are junk. On cell phones, they are typically pretty crappy. The iPhone 5's have excellent ALS (ambient light sensors) and they ramp up/down smoothly; much better than any other device i've used.
The way the ALS works in most devices is simple; there are several photodiodes, each tuned for a specific spectrum of light. Say two for 3200k, two for 6500k, two for whatever else, etc, and they basically average the reading, apply a curve, and adjust the screen appropriately. They do NOT accurately measure color temperature very well, and 'see' brightness only in limited spectrums, meaning their idea of what 'bright' and 'dim' is may be vastly different from the human eyes' perceived 'bright' or 'dim'. Also, the 'curves' applied don't match up that well with how the human eye perceives brightness; its really amazing we can fake it as close as we can, really, but most of the magic lies in your brain.
Lighting - this is kind of tricky; and i don't feel like getting into it too deeply, but what you perceive as 'white' is mostly dependent on your brain; not your eyes or the lights around you. Think about reading a book (a real book) inside a library under fluorescent lights; the pages are white, even though the color temperature might be 5000k or 6500k. Now that same book outside; thats 5800k. Now under some old incandescent lights; that might be 2800k. Yet you know it SHOULD be white. Thats your brain. And thats reflected light; its based on the ambient color temperature around you; so reflected light 'looks' white or blue or whatever.
Your phone screen (galaxy S IV) is basically white balanced at 6600k , so it will appear most white when around lighting around 6500k, which is on the bluer side of daylight/cloudy and indoors.
Screen Mode - The Galaxy S IV has a feature that allows it to dynamically change based on the ALS, or can be overridden by the user, which mostly affects color gamut, and either amps up contrast and saturation while shifting hues slightly, or flattens them to a more realistic (usually most people prefer high saturation/high contrast images) image.
Sampling frequency - i have no idea what the ALS sensor samples at, or any definitive specs on the exact sensor and how it interacts with auto brightness, its priority, etc (yet, ive emailed Samsung and i wouldn't mind coming up with a simple app to adjust this if i can figure out the sensor specs and their software). But certain lights (fluorescent mostly) flicker at either 50hz or 60hz depending on their AC current, which may, at times, interfere or give bad readings to the ALS depending on the ALS sensor reading timings (again i do not know exactly what those values are, i suspect they are long as my S III and S IV typically react about a half-second behind lighting changes).
DETERMINING IF YOU HAVE A BAD DISPLAY
All together, it works pretty darn good, if a bit slowly, but there seems to be a lot of confusion and people wondering if their screen is bad. The BEST and EASIEST way is to go to any cell store or mall, and compare YOUR screen and the SAME image to another S IV, with the same settings. The best settings for this are to turn power saving OFF, turn off ALL power saving apps, turn auto brightness OFF, turn brightness up ALL THE WAY, go to 'settings', 'display', 'screen mode', and change the setting to 'movie'. Compare several IDENTICAL images or pages. Then change the 'screen mode' to 'standard' and compare the same images.
While doing so, be sure to check out images such as the one i provided and make sure the colors match, grays are grays or at least the same slight caste of pink/green/etc, and while doing so, TILT THE SCREENS at various angles together (level surface, side by side, tilt to 45 degrees at the same time on all 4 axes), and look for discoloration or bleeding; if you see big differences between two or three other phones and yours, you got a bum screen. I haven't seen a 'bad' one yet, and i made the poor AT&T guy open up five of them and let me play with them (AMOLED also has jet black splotches with full blacks in a fully black room; i wanted the screen with the least noticeable splotches).
Thanks for this. Question though. When I pull my keyboard up to type on something or if I'm in a YouTube video and I tap the screen to bring up the progress bar the color shifts dramatically. I've tried many settings and it always does this. Also tried it on another s4 multiple ones did the same thing...

The white balance can actually be calibrated by changing the calibration levels of the LEDs sitting under the screen

ok, do me a favor, I would prefer if you had either a prosumer camera you could use, or better yet a DSLR you could borrow that i could guide you through how to take two shots of the differences with all the important variables locked down so i can figure it out for you. I believe the screenshot feature ignores the 'Screen Mode' settings, as it should (you wouldnt want a screen mode dictating recording colorimetry options), so it does require real photos to figure out.
Have you changed the standard 'Screen Mode' setting or left it at 'Adapt Display' or 'Dynamic'? Those will keep changing it; Professional photo and movie are more flat, but they do not change. Again disable power saving mode, power saving apps, turn off auto brightness, (in this case set brightness to where you want it) and check it out again; if it doesnt change colors, (which it should not), you have no issues; its a normal 'feature' of the device. The idea is to limit all variables. Try that and PM me the results. If the colors no longer shift, the issue was 'adapt display' or 'dynamic' Screen Modes. Auto brightness/powersaving mode/power saving apps should only affect brightness; we are only disabling them to limit perceived changes.
To try to trouble shoot this, change screen mode to a static setting like 'professional photo' or 'movie' in Screen Mode and turn off auto brightness, turn off power saving and turn off all power/battery saving apps/etc, bring up a Youtube video and play it, then bring up your keyboard and see if the color shifts (it shouldnt if you have changed Screen Mode to Pro Photo/Movie and disabled powersave/all battery apps/auto brightness). Then let me know if that fixes it via PM.

problem is most calibration settings/programs and methods i know of are non-pentile and are mostly software fixes for what ive used; AMOLED is different PenTile (RGBG) than what i tried to fix before which was Motorola Atrix 4G PenTile (RGBW, red green blue white), CCFL LCD is way different (more what im used to, as well as LED LCD and even IPS is easier as it is still RGB), and all the curves software etc are all proprietary to manufacturers. Granted controlling just the R/G/B/G LED's would help, but getting the curve right and correcting might take longer than the Galaxy S V arrival. I spent months calibrating all my gear; most of it is 2-3 years old, and at least 6-12 months old before i get it all settled and can rely on it for a given job. Usually i rely on calibrated displays, knowing my own color limitations, RGB histograms, vector scopes, etc (i have a very slight red/green color weakness, but extremely sharp vision and i know how to work around my limitations).
I actually emailed Samsung about this for as much information as i could get (not much so far but im digging). I have a friend playing with LUT curves on his S IV and he says its a close second to the iPhone screens for AdobeRGB in 'movie' mode, which i happen to agree with; its pretty flat, but the contrast on greens is still high, which again is a PenTile RGBG specific issue; we are both vets of backlit RGB panels. My friend also works with the same company i consult/represent; it took him almost three months to properly calibrate LUT curves between a single sensor and a simple 480P CCFL LCD display, and that was with full manufacturer support. Colorimetry is a science.

Same here. Thanks for the write up but I'm seeing the same thing.
I dim the display with the Screen Filter app for reading in bed and whenever my keyboard pops up (SwiftKey, TouchPal or stock) the entire screen gets a green cast. Under these conditions it is very dramatic.
I use manual brightness and turned off the Autoadjust Screen Tone setting
Some other apps exhibit a fluctuation in color cast when I put my finger near the screen which is double weird. :-\

yep, i have some old LG CCFL LCD monitors with a claimed 2ms (more like 6-10ms) response time from 2006; they were about $300 each back then. i also have a new IPS with 30ms response time; it is annoying.
also some pentile displays are slower between subpixels; my Atrix 4G had very slow blue white pixels (RGBW) so you had a weird dimming as well when scrolling through texts.
Settings, Display, disable Auto Adjust Screen Tone' as well, its a power saving thing i forgot to mention in the first write up.

yep, i have some old LG CCFL LCD monitors with a claimed 2ms (more like 6-10ms) response time from 2006; they were about $300 each back then. i also have a new IPS with 30ms response time; it is annoying.
also some pentile displays are slower between subpixels; my Atrix 4G had very slow blue white pixels (RGBW) so you had a weird dimming as well when scrolling through texts.
Settings, Display, disable Auto Adjust Screen Tone' as well, its a power saving thing i forgot to mention in the first write up.

it can be fixed with color adjustment though so maybe a software update can fix it as well
I bought the s4 the first day it came out, after using it for couple of days i started noticing weird stuff on my photos, especially on low light photos... i went to att and one of the rep said its a known issue its called "elephant effect" im into photography and i havent heard that term before, he also said that it will be fix on the next update... so i went home and did some research about "elephant effect" unfortunately i cant can find anything related with my issue... i also did some pixel peeping and im 100% positive there's something off on the display of my phone.

You can see those weird artifacts on the pictures, i also compared my screen display to my coworker's phone and my phone was way off...
What i would suggest for those who wants to buy the new s4 or currently users, is to check the display by taking a photo on a low light and do some pixel peeping...

Has anyone else noticed a color and contrast shift from the top to the bottom of the screen? In very low brightness settings my screen gradients from crushed black levels and a reddish hue at the top of the screen to a acceptable black levels and an more green hue at the bottom of the screen. I can try to get some pictures with my DSLR tonight to illustrate. I'll have to compare to other S4's in the same scenario. In every day use its not too noticeable, but while watching video in a completely dark environment with the brightness all the way down it now bothers me some.
Anyone have a similar experience? Thanks!
Yes I notice it. It fixes itself if you change the brightness with an app. so I'm guessing its a weird kernel thing. It only happens when the keyboard is up

I notice it with or without the keyboard. I use the Display Tester app to display a full screen white or 50% gray and now that I look at it, the red hue at the top of the screen is visible at all but 100% brightness levels. What app were you using to dim the screen, I would like to try it out.
Here is an exaggerated image I made showing the gradation (50% gray). The top of the screen would be to the left. Black levels get crushed at the top of the screen also.
(Sorry for the bad image compression, my screen doesn't have the extreme banding in it!)

screen adjuster, lags like hell but you can see it fixes it.
set values +5 for each color.

ill check that out; it looks like compression artifacts; what settings are you using when you shoot? also to internal or external SD card? and speed rating/brand/type of external SD card?

I tried that and it made little to no difference on my phone. I went to the AT&T store on my lunch and compared my phone to the display unit. My phone has a noticeable difference. The rep at the AT&T store suggested I take it to the local repair depot... I've never been there before but I hope they don't try to pawn a refurb phone off on me to replace my 17 day old S4. I'll let you guys know what I find out.
