newbie question

ok so i have flashed and flashed been messing around i got what i think i like so i want to back it up my question is this
1. if i use my 2 gig card will it be able to be used for anything else?
2. how do you do a backup?
3. if i flash it to something else to try and dont like it and restore from my backup will it go back to the way i have it right now providing i save it that way?
sorry for the noob questions i have only had the phone for a few days
thanks
joe
What are you trying to backup? Your ROM? You can backup the ROM using Mestrini's Wizard Service Tool (WST for short).

[Q] it is possible to...

Sorry, I'm new to this so sorry if this seems dumb.
So i bought the phone from rogers and immediately updated to froyo 2.2 official release by rogers/samsung.
I read about all the hype online about rooting and custom roms so i decided to give it a shot.
I used the superoneclick method to root my phone and it was successful.
I then used "rom manager - clockworkmod" and created a restore file before i did any flashing to my phone.
after creating a backup, i went on and flashed to the cognition 3.04.
Now my question is. Am i ever able to get my phone back to its original rom, kernel, and modem? the reason i want to know is because i might need to get my phone replaced due to some technical issues with the phone.
Also, does the backup of my phone after rooting play a part in any of this? if so, how?
Im sorry if there is already a post like this one. Its just that i couldn't find the answer through all the hundreds of pages of threads and replies, so I thought it would be easier to post a here with my specific question. Thanks.

danny

It guides you through the process of going back to a stock ROM. Btw, I've used it and it works.
Good Luck!!

Do I not use that link in general, or just not to use the firmware given at the bottom? the steps are correct though, no?
also from my searching.
i can put my phone back to my backup point (just after rooting) through clockworkmod. Woud this change my rom back to stock from? how about kernel and modem and all that? would that all get reversed back to my backup point? meaning it will basically be a stock phone. But I think also read somewhere that my kernel and modem does not get changed back to rogers original one. is there a way to do it?
I then found this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846501
that says i need the original rogers rom for the captivate by the links there no longer work for download. Also on that thread, it was mentioned that the AT&T logo will still come up on startup, which would not be a good idea if i had to send my phone in for warrenty.
I then looked at : http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-I896
Here it tells me to flash to a i9000 before i reflash to a rogers firmware in order to remove the at&t logo. it also provides me with a link for the " Official Rogers Stock ROM ", but according to somebody on the first link i posted here, it isnt the "official rom"
Any ideas?
This is where I got the stock 2.2 file from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905042.
Edit: I have flashed a bunch of times and have never got stuck with the AT&T startup after flashing back to stock with the odin file.

Thanks. Do you know if my kernel is going to go back to stock too or is it going to remain the same as the custom rom one?

If you use the odin file the kernal and modem will revert back to stock.

Thanks. So im assuming now that the only time my kernel and modem wont go back to stock is when i flash with CWM. correct?
I haven't tried using the CWM file in that link so I'm not sure if it contains the kernel and modem. As far as custom roms go most if not all come packaged with the kernel and modem of choice.
So.. When I do a "master clear" from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989...
Would everything be wiped? I read somewhere that when you do a "wipe" from your settings it only clears user settings or something. What would a "wipe"
from the recovery menu do?
I flashed to a different rom today thinking it will help my battery issue. When i am flashing from one rom to the next, i do a restore back to my backup before i flash to a new rom. Is this the correct method? or am i supposed to wipe beforehand? The reason i ask is because this is my 2nd rom and my battery issue still seems to be there. I tried other methods of fixing hte battery but nothign seems to work. When i looked into root explorer, i see that there are a lot more files now everywhere, than when i first started. would some of them be from my previous rom? if so how do i remove them?

[Q]Flashing related..basics

I was quite disappointed by not getting a reply to my questions in my phone section so i decided to post it here, hope you guys'll help me out.
Before i perform flashing a rom, i have a couple of questions to ask you.
1. I'm not familiar with nandroid backup and all that. So if someone can give me some explaination of how it works and what i need to do to have a backup of my rom so i can flash back to orignal one whenever i want?
2. Also i heard from people that after flashing some ROMs, you can't get back to stock rom (recovery), if so then how you know that certain rom isn't flashable
3. Is there a difference between recovering (flashing stock rom) and downgrading? if so then what?
4. How can one brick cellphone and how to recover back, is it easy to brick?
Also some basics if i need to know so that i don't brick my cellphone and can easily get back to my official rom whenever i want. Please do tell me anything which i should know, Thanks !

Need Stock Gingerbread for Unroot

I need to return this phone. Bad pixles. I have unrooted it and restored the stock 2.2 rom nandroid. But this phone was shipped with gingerbread. I can't get it to update using the LG software. It says my software is up to date. So I guess I have to root again and flash the stock gb. Will someone help me locate stock gb zips or nandroids?
you have to do some trick with that lg updater to get it to work. Atleast, I had to. If i can find those steps I'll posted.
try this: unless you found a gb zip..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1183168
or here are the zip files..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1037120
I havent looked but I am sure there is a nandroid or.zip of stock GB in the dev section. If not I just returned my phone to stock because I got a new one and I just wanted to mess around so went to my original GB from befor I played witht the phone and did a factory reset then made a nandroid copy of that on my old phone because the new one was used and the person had someone else do the rooting and flashing for him and they never made a backup of the original. So I took the nandroid backup from my old phone and restored it on the newer one and it worked perfectly. So If you need and it is allowed I can post the copy of that nandroid backup and that should work I think.
Note I am not an expert so if anyone knows better please chime in. But I think that should be okay to send back for warenty exchange. Unless they really look they wont know the difference. I'm sure that they can always tell if they try jhard enough. So when you are on the phone with them make sure you are polite and dont lose your temper for any reason because that will m ake them look harder for a reason not to help you. Thats just my advice. Good luck
You should flash the development section on your phone
Thanks. I cant seem to figure out how to flash those bin files
Now I've done it! I found this file 2x-v10b-1300166062-nvflash and flashed the "flash" app. Now my phone thinks its a p990. What have I done! How do I reverse this! It wont let me flash clockwork recovery anymore
HOT DAMN! I GOT IT! Finally found exactly what was looking for!

[Q] Update to new baseband

i know im really late on updating to the new baseband and i also used the search function to see if there was anything about this .. also sorry in advance if this is wrong spot. However i digress, my question is how do i update my baseband? im looking to go on to VRBLK3 but.. the deal is this .. im rooted and have an unlocked boot loader and have a custom rom on my phone .. of course .. now i was wondering if anyone knew how to update the boot loader properly .... and what steps i should take .. or if there is a guide or something please lemme know .......
also its a real pain in the ass to have to restore all of my data every time i put a custom rom on my phone .. like my homescreen settings and things of that nature ... is there something tha backs it all up .. everything.. so that when i put a new rom on i dont have to sit there and make a new homescreen everytime .. im anal about it because i have all my apps in specific locations as to .. how i use them ...thanks in adavnce chers

apps/loss
welp i certainly can agree with you about replacing everything at every turn but theres a backup called "Titanium" that some swear by as the best way to back up and return the apps you want. I myself having no certain apps that are all that important just reflash and sometimes i do a factory/user reset. losing everything have only had one app that changed from a freebie to a pay version while i was in the middle of reflashing. So i lost that app.. a good turket call. oh well, other than that i find i usuall reload and try some new apps.. even though i have used "Titanium Backup" to do a backup, I've never used it to reload my apps..
in your case that would be where i started .. its a freebie as of now, but you must be "rooted" to use it...
good luck on all the reworks, but if we were satisfied before why do we flash a new rom to restart with.
Download the K3 modem and rpm (found on rootzwiki) and flash in recovery. No wiping needed.
