Sorry, I'm new to this so sorry if this seems dumb.
So i bought the phone from rogers and immediately updated to froyo 2.2 official release by rogers/samsung.
I read about all the hype online about rooting and custom roms so i decided to give it a shot.
I used the superoneclick method to root my phone and it was successful.
I then used "rom manager - clockworkmod" and created a restore file before i did any flashing to my phone.
after creating a backup, i went on and flashed to the cognition 3.04.
Now my question is. Am i ever able to get my phone back to its original rom, kernel, and modem? the reason i want to know is because i might need to get my phone replaced due to some technical issues with the phone.
Also, does the backup of my phone after rooting play a part in any of this? if so, how?
Im sorry if there is already a post like this one. Its just that i couldn't find the answer through all the hundreds of pages of threads and replies, so I thought it would be easier to post a here with my specific question. Thanks.
regards,
danny

Do I not use that link in general, or just not to use the firmware given at the bottom? the steps are correct though, no?
also from my searching.
i can put my phone back to my backup point (just after rooting) through clockworkmod. Woud this change my rom back to stock from? how about kernel and modem and all that? would that all get reversed back to my backup point? meaning it will basically be a stock phone. But I think also read somewhere that my kernel and modem does not get changed back to rogers original one. is there a way to do it?
I then found this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846501
that says i need the original rogers rom for the captivate by the links there no longer work for download. Also on that thread, it was mentioned that the AT&T logo will still come up on startup, which would not be a good idea if i had to send my phone in for warrenty.
I then looked at : http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-I896
Here it tells me to flash to a i9000 before i reflash to a rogers firmware in order to remove the at&t logo. it also provides me with a link for the " Official Rogers Stock ROM ", but according to somebody on the first link i posted here, it isnt the "official rom"
Any ideas?
This is where I got the stock 2.2 file from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905042.
Edit: I have flashed a bunch of times and have never got stuck with the AT&T startup after flashing back to stock with the odin file.

Thanks. So im assuming now that the only time my kernel and modem wont go back to stock is when i flash with CWM. correct?
I haven't tried using the CWM file in that link so I'm not sure if it contains the kernel and modem. As far as custom roms go most if not all come packaged with the kernel and modem of choice.
So.. When I do a "master clear" from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989...
Would everything be wiped? I read somewhere that when you do a "wipe" from your settings it only clears user settings or something. What would a "wipe"
from the recovery menu do?
I flashed to a different rom today thinking it will help my battery issue. When i am flashing from one rom to the next, i do a restore back to my backup before i flash to a new rom. Is this the correct method? or am i supposed to wipe beforehand? The reason i ask is because this is my 2nd rom and my battery issue still seems to be there. I tried other methods of fixing hte battery but nothign seems to work. When i looked into root explorer, i see that there are a lot more files now everywhere, than when i first started. would some of them be from my previous rom? if so how do i remove them?

No problem! If your still thinking about upgrading I would say its worth it. DesignGear(s?) makes great ROMS. However it does erase your userdata (although for something the files still remain on the SD card (like music). In addition in you want the official Froyo release you will have to use ODIN to flash back.
So, I just want to clear things up for myself.
Right now, I am running Eugene's ROM.
I will flash back to stock JF6
I can download the Cog 2.2 BETA6.zip file. Put it on my SD card and flash it using Clockwork.
If I want to flash back to JF6, I can use Odin to that.
Does all that seem right or is there more to it?
I did read the guide and it is excellent. I am just hesistant here, so just wanted some confirmation.
Thank you for your awesome work.

Flash to 2.1 Eclar

That is what my understanding. I did this with an un modded captivate. I am pretty sure that was JH6. If you have a PC you can always just use his ODIN flash to install it and that is that. But I have a Mac so I made my guide Mac friendly.

Install went smooth as can be. I had to install the drivers, as told by the guide, but I think you may have missed a step?
Under "Installing Froyo --> Prepare" you may want to add a note that the phone has to be in Mass Storage mode to transfer the ZIP. Not sure if this is always true, but I did have to do that on my own (it was not showing the phone when it was sitting in debugging mode.)
I will be sending you a $5 donation. Really wish I could send more, but simply cannot. I am hoping others are doing the same, as this guide is awesome...
I did have one question about the 2.2 update. I heard somewhere that this would fix the GPS issue, however, I am experiencing the same issues with connectivity. Does anybody know if Samsung/AT&T plan on fixing this?
Again, thanks!

I've had my Charge for a few weeks now. I've been silently reading the forum this whole time. I've downloaded the tools and I'm ready to kernel/root/rom it... But I like to be cautious. Everyone always says "HAVE A BACKUP YOU TARD!" but I can't seem to find any information on the topic pre-root.
So... Is there some way to backup everything on the phone prior to tinkering with it so I can put it back if something goes bad?
I did search.. Couldn't find anything for the droid. Lots of mentions of titanium. I downloaded it but it's for rooted phones as well.
No. Clockwork doesn't do a proper backup now. (And it doesn't back up the kernel anyway.)
Just changing the kernel and rooting won't alter anything that flashing the original kernel can't undo. So do that, get Titanium (I suggest the pro version, since it's the flasher's best friend), and use that to back up your user apps before you take the step of flashing a full ROM.
I'm a total newbie to this stuff, so this is something I've been wondering about as well.
s44- So changing the kernel and rooting you would say is a pretty safe venture to start with? I'm a fairly technical guy in general, but haven't ventured into the realm of phone rooting before, so I'm a little anxious about possibly bricking my phone right after I got it.
Is there something I would need to do beforehand to enable me to flash the original kernel, or is that just something you can always do after rooting? Thanks for any info.
We have odin. Thanks to odin we can always flash back to stock rom. If you look at the development forum you will find the stock package that no matter what you do you can always go back. Just dont mess with the radio or the pit file. Always us pda in odin unless you are flashing a new radio and you are instricted todo so. For user apps and data you can use titanium backup

Flashing a new radio means replacing the current modem/voice radio's software with a new/different one. There's currently no flashable radio softwares that I know of for the Charge. There are two radio softwares for the phone, though: the original version shipped with the phone, and the new one that started rolling out last week with the EE4 OTA update. That update is a patch to the old radio software (a patch is a method that changes only portion of the current software rather than overwriting the whole thing).
Hope that helps you understand a bit better.

I'm sorry if someone already posted this. I've been hours at it re installing ROMs. I have GummyCharged 2.0. I've tried doing a nandroid back up for the past couple of days. I've tried Rom Manager to back it up many different times and every time it shows that open box for a few seconds then it's just the android with a triangle /!\. I've tried backing up while on Recovery but at the end it can't find my SD-ext and doesnt back up. I can't find anything online relating to it. I'm gonna reinstall the stock and root it. I'll back up every time I change my phone and see when exactly it starts to fail. I'm still a noob at this.

first of all don't use Rom Manager for anything on the Charge as it doesn't work right... second of all nandroid backups can be made on Gummy 2.0, you would need the most up to date CWM from Imnuts thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112804, it should be orange and version 4.0.1.4

Rom Manager and the Charge do NOT work.
Make sure you're using the latest Recovery as that's the only one that's able to backup/restore and even then there's known to be issues.
Just gonna latch on here since this is a pretty recent last post...
I have recovery 4.0.0.8 and am trying to go to gummycharge GBE 2.0RC1.5, do I need to update my recovery first? I'm assuming I do to backup, but just wanted to confirm. And on the subject of updating recovery, I use ODIN just like I did for Gummy (except following what it says on that link, no auto reboot)?
Thanks, I've done enough rooting in the past, but not too familiar with CWM updating and ODIN.

if you're trying to do a CWM backup first then yes you would need to update CWM to the latest 8/17 build which you can odin separately... odining or flashing the new Gummy rom should update your kernel and thus update CWM

Here's my 5 cents for what it's worth.
I only backup what I really need, rather than a full backup - that way I know I keep the DATA, not the old apps, outdated cache and setting etc.
To do this I use:
SMS Backup+ : Backs up SMS, Call Log
Evernote : I keep notes, screenshots, voice memos etc in sync using evernote. This of course only works if you like evernote
Eye-Fi : I move all my pictures of the phone using Eye-Fi. This cost of course, sorry, but it works (Plus you get a cool SD card for your digital camera). Other options exists, I hear a lot of good stuff about SugarSync.
Market and Amazon : All you apps are already backed up on Google Android Market or Amazon (dep. on where you bought/downloaded them from). Some people wants everything re-installed from the get go. I prefer re-install when I need it, I'm always near 4G so it literally takes seconds.
This has been working so well that I now don't think twice before factory resetting or upgrading firmware. I just do it.
Hope that helped...
Hello, boy do I have a mishap. Well, anyway to begin I will say that I decided I wanted to root my phone to debloat it. So what I did, is downloaded the EE4 update and did the VooDoo V4 Kernel that flashes CWM and EXT4 and other junk. Well that all went great. I got it rooted and such but then just tinkering around I went into Rom Manager and told it to back up. WELL, when I did this the phone got locked on the SAMSUNG boot screen for hours and continued to refuse to boot. SO, I attempted to fix it by installing altered beast just to get the os running again and went into clockwork and backed it up. Then I went to the rooted ed1 to bring it back up to EE4 rooted and with the voodoo kernel and such but it refuses to open clockwork! The voodoo kernel changes filesystems and roots it and such but clockwork wont load. When I try to flash it in rom manager it says its succesful and then i go to reboot in recovery. It takes me to the Samsung Recovery 3e, I try to the update.zip, (yes i took the cwm recovery-update.zip and renamed it and through it in the sd card root) but all that happens is that a progress bar shows up for a split second then the android guy with the triangle and ! shows up and it does nothing. Help? I really need to back it up, preferably in the rooted ed1 but in ee4 will work to. Any ideas would be appreciated. I used odin v1.3 by the way. Im willing to try anything to get clockwork to boot so i can back it up. What do I do?
EDIT: Also, now when I go into 3e recovery, it complains saying " cant mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p3 " or something like that.
Did you read anything on this forum beforehand? Or just go link by link downloading files and deciding what to try on your phone?
Just saying..
Yeah, I did. Ive searched everywhere. I cant find anything about my problem. Ive looked at things that are close, hoping a solution can be found but nothing and no I wasnt just downloading files and spoon feeding them to my phone.. I just wanted to be able to debloat it.
Go search about Rom Manager and let us know what you find out...
I dont see how thats going to get me one step closer to solving my problem. Ive done the searching, now im asking.
Start w/ this one. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1100384
I can't tell where you are currently on your phone from reading that as it's to much text in one paragraph and it isn't put together in a logical sense and seems to jump around. I would look at the instructions for going to rooted EE4 in the Dev forum as that should get you to where you want to be with voodoo/cwm/rom
Instead of being a Forum Snob. If you know the answer, why don't you just help him out?
There's an abundance of confusing information on here and everyone uses acronyms. I too searched for hours on how to solve a similar problem and ended up having it taken care of for me. People join communities like this one for help. Not to get flamed for asking a question. It may be elementary to YOU but not everyone.
Thanks, for the care. Sorry about that if its jumbled, im frustrated with this because ive flashed the rooted ed1 about a billion times now, trying everything to get it functioning. Id be glad to try to explain again if that could help? Ah, yes. Well, I returned to the forum about installing the voodoo kernel. I followed the process word for word. But it just doesnt seem to want to work. Right now I just flashed it again back to the rooted ed1. Would I be able to put CWM on there at that point?

Oh and sorry if Im not getting this. Are you saying use a application that imnuts made? If so, could you be so nice to link it? Or a method he used? I looked for stuff but I didnt find anything other then what looks like a stock rom/kernel ed1 from him
I know how it is to be frustrated, but like they all said all of your questions have already been answered.
Here's my attempt to help:
Your problem lies in trying to flash CWR through ROM Manager, it currently doesn't play well with our phones. Word is that Koush (the creator) needs to update something for it to work with our phones. The bootloader is unlocked.
To flash imnuts' version of CWR, you'll need to use Samsung's leaked software called Odin - it's PC only. The alternative is Heimdall which is supposed to be cross-platform compatible, but the latest version is command-line only.
You have to find out if you've converted your system to EXT4 or if it's still RFS. That depends on if you have the Voodoo lagfix enabled or not. Check out the dev section and look for the titles that say [RECOVERY], [ODIN], [ROM], and/or something like "Get yourself to EE4 successfully".
A few links:
[HOW-TO] Get a rooted version of EE4
[RECOVERY][6-11-11]Clockwork Mod Recovery

Well, currently right now its rfs. Its the stock file system. What I was going to do, or did before, was to put it in download mode and flash the VoodooV4 Kernel. It roots the phone, and all that good stuff and is suppose to put the Voodoo recovery/cwm on there.

You do need Odin to load that, but i'm wondering why you want to? Did you install the PBJ kernel following the instructions from the other link?

As j3r3goss stated, Shabby needs someone to help out. We need an unrooted phone so that we can grab the original recovery that comes on the phone. If you have an unrooted exhilarate and can donate some time/effort, Shabby would be the best person to contact. You can reach him by going to http://webchat.irondust.net/?channels=hitsquad Just type in his name (Shabbypenguin) and if he's lurking he'll respond.
Shabby had someone volunteer, but he said it didn't work out (no details as to why or what happened).

Unfortunatly when I was rooting the phone something weird happened and nearly hard bricked it, but I am currently running Tmobile blaze 4g on it with no sound or calling. So hopefully sometime soon someone will be able to help Shabby get a stock tar figured out and ran.

Shabby has the system.img and boot.img from my phone. Contact him and see if he can explain how to get back to a stock image. Also, if he can't help, get w/ j3r3goss about this as he had the very same issue, but I think he got his back to running the way it's supposed to.
Hope that helps!

stock tar
Here's what I used to get the stock OS back, minus recovery of course. The tar contains the system and boot and can be pushed via Odin. For some reason when I had the radio files in the tar it would fail in Odin so I found a script to update those via CWM. I'm not sure what all needs to be done but since mine was extremely messed up I pushed the system tar via Odin then booted into CWM Recovery flashed the radio.zip then performed factory reset x3, format cache x3, format dalvik cache x3 and fixed permissions. It took a bit but booted just and I have had no issues.
You will need to perform a touch key fw update after you boot recovery, but everything else appears to be fully functional. We still need to get some assistance in getting the boot.img rooted so that we can get a dump of the stock recovery.img.
Hope this helps.
Obviously these are to be used at your own risk.

Working on a Custom ROM

I am about to start working on a custom System ROM for this phone. What Apps should be included, what apps should be removed (AT&T crapware of course - but what else)?
I want to make a basic one with just a few key apps, and a more advance one for the ultimate tweaker/hacker.
All suggestions (but please be polite) are welcome!
We also still don't have the original restore.img - so if you want to help w/ that, let me know, I may have an angle that we can get it with.

Right now the biggest things for me are bloat and launcher. Everything AT&T needs to go. Is there a way to seperate Google apps or do they pretty much install together? Ther are way to many Google apps that I don't use or ever care to use. Not a big fan of the TW so I'm using ADW, but that can be easily changed by the user. One thing I have been trying to find is support for volume rocker music controls. I use this thing for for music all the time and hate having to skip tracks from the screen.

j3r3: The Google apps can all be installed separately AFAIK. What's TW? I'm familiar with ADW so I assume it's a launcher?
I think there is an app that does the vol control switch, but I don't know what it is off the top of my head.

TW = TouchWiz
Custom Binary Counter Reset
I take absolutely no credit for this, I merely tried it and it does infact work for our phone as well. I was at 42 BTW.

Hey bud. Does shabby need som1 to send him a phone? I got one of these phones. Stock of course. I'd like to root it. I'm hip to flashing. I've got the note running flapjaxxx rom. Samsung s2 running blu kuban. So anyhow. What does he need?
I don't know what's going on with Shabby. As far as I know there are some people trying to get ahold of him to test his rooted kernel and he's not responding nor has he posted his rooted kernel.

I don't know if Shabby needs a phone or not. I personally, haven't heard from Shabby since a couple of weeks ago.
You can always go to his site and PM him and make the offer.
I was actually hoping my wife would buy one of these, and I was going to try to grab the stock restore, but she opted for a Galaxy S II SkyRocket instead (larger screen, more memory, thinner, etc. - but she did like that my phone is smaller (edge-to-edge)).
Anyway, we're pretty much stuck at the moment. We don't have the original restore, and we can't seem to get it.
I think I know what needs to be done, but I'd have to consult w/ Shabby and j3r3. If you're willing to try yourself, you need to get the rooted ROM, and get it installed on your phone. Then, as I understand it, you need to adb the phone and dd a restore.img. Once we have that, we can then install custom ROMs and revert back to stock if needed.
Other than that, we have full root, and I have been able to uninstall AT&T crapware, Samsung Crapware, and also most of the other system stuff that isn't needed/wanted.
The next step is, as I find time, to create a minimal ROM that has only what is necessary for the phone to function. There will be a couple of other apps (to verify root, and allow you access to all files and system settings), but other than that - that'll be it.
Let me know if you think you'd be willing to be a guinea pig on this - and you should let j3r3 and shabby know as well (if shabby is still interested).

Got the Original Kernel and Platform.tar files
So, I found, DL'd and am currently uploading the original Samsung Exhilarate SGH-i577 Opensource Kernel and Platform Files... Good find? I think (hope) so.
If you need them, go here: https://docs.google.com/folder/d/0B7...VmckQwRnc/edit
You can DL any of the files I have posted there, or you can just DL the entire zip here: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B7nWFHy_HCE7aTBEbF83T2Z0Mzg11.
Or you can just them from where I did: The files were DL'd from the Samsung Open Source website: http://opensource.samsung.com/index.jsp - just do a search for "i577".

ROM for Exhilarate?
Hi
I am new to this...
I was able to successfully root my Galaxy Exhilarate (Thank you) - trying to unlock it so I can use it with other carriers - do I need a specific ROM file? are the files posted by Black-wolf what I need?
Thanks

GHORR: Here's the deal: As of right now, there is no way to unlock your phone for use with other carriers unless you can convince AT&T to send you the unlock code. To do that (I know this from experience), you'll need to be able to explain why you want it unlocked to them. Read this thread for more info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1812976
I know that doesn't help. However, you can also do a search for "SIM Unlock" - there are some phones that have had their system files hacked and you might be able to unlock it that way. Note, I am in no way responsible for anything that happens to your phone. This is at your own risk.
Good luck

Thanks for replying - but I thought that by flashing the ROM it removes the lock, did I get it wrong?
Alright, so i am having a bit of an issue. And it's probably because i'm a complete noob....
So, I have a new GS3, and wanted to give my (already rooted and flashed with Cyanogenmod 10) Skyrocket to my mom to use on Simple mobile (a company using T-mobile's towers).
I read that you can flash radios for T-mobile onto the phone, and so I figured everything would work.
Here is what I did.
I unlocked the phone while in Cyanogenmod10
Flashed LiquidSmooth RC9 - read it had less bugs
tried flashing multiple Tmobile Radios
I get NO service. I cant pick any of them up..
Baseband comes up as UNKNOWN...
So i'm currently downloading ODIN and going to try to flash to stock and just start from scratch...
Any suggestions on what to do?
Do you still have an imei?
Try unlocking the phone after you've gone back to stock. I don't know how you did it with cm10. I don't think it works with anything but stock.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I957 using xda app-developers app
No, the IMEI is blank when i do the *#06# code....
also, when i put the simple mobile sim in the phone, it automatically came up asking for the network unlock code. That's how i was able to unlock it.
Did you ever backup your imei? Flashing back to stock will hopefully bring it back if not you may have some issues. Also as mentioned above it's better to unlock from a stock ROM or at least stock based.
Alright, Flashed to stock, IMEI is back (thank god), and i'm getting service.
Now here are the issues ahead of me, and any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am on STOCK ATT ICS Rom.
I GET SERVICE (however, it's only 2g) i know i need to flash the radios for Tmobile,
Was going to use this ---> Blaze_4G_LB7_ICS_Radio_MOD ...... Direct DL, CAN BE USED FOR T-MOBILE/WIND ON ICS (from the skyrocket reference thread)
First i know i have to root, install CWM, all that.
Now, should i flash a custom rom? If so, which one would you suggest. ( i assume, i have to give her ICS, not JB, right?)
Also, you said backup my IMEI, i'll look this up in the meantime, but if you could include a link in your post on a how-to just in case i dont find it, i would really appreciate it.
Also, is there anything else i should do to get this working properly?
thank you very much for all your help.

Custom ROM is your choice. There are a lot of JB ROMS that are pretty stable. Also a new stock JB leak in the dev section. As far as backing up your imei. You'll need to root first as soon as you do get a file explorer and copy the whole EFS folder to your external SDcard. Then also copy it to your computer. The imei is held within the EFS folder. From now on do this as soon as you root BEFORE you flash anything. lol

Thank you very much! I'll start rooting now and back it up immediately. I would love to give her a JB rom, mainly for google now. However, that radio is for ICS. Is that going to cause a problem? or will it even work on JB?
I've been on JB for months using an ICS radio. I'm on ATT so I can't say for certain but it shouldn't be an issue. Just go to the DEV thread and spend a few hours reading up on what's available. Like I said most of the ROMs are pretty stable at this point.
FYI, on skyrocket the IMEI is stored in mmcblk0p18 and mmcblk0p19, not /efs partition. Might really want to back those up, especially before attempting a usb unlock. The /efs only really stores exports of certain properties from mmcblk0p18.

Thanks for the heads up. lol I thought for sure they'd be stored in the same place they where for my SGS4G. So what is stored in the imei folder in EFS then?
