The Samsung Captivate Guide: FROYO 2.2 - Captivate General

This guide is for if you are on Android 2.1 and want to get 2.2. If you are fine with 2.1 use this guide. If you already have Cognition you can use this just skip the install cognition step. If you are on a different version of 2.2 you need to do an ODIN reset (second to last page of guide)
UPDATED 10/11
This is a guide that is similar to the other guide however it is for DesignGears Cognition ROM.
Drivers
Rooting
Clockwork Recovery
Unlock
Installing ROM
LCD Density Hack

This guide was created to be as user friendly as possible, so the easiest method was was shown for all of the above, even if it is not the best.
PLEASE READ THIS GUIDE BEFORE POSTING ANY QUESTIONS BECAUSE IT IS MOST LIKELY ALREADY BEEN COVERED
You can download the guide here.

No problem! If your still thinking about upgrading I would say its worth it. DesignGear(s?) makes great ROMS. However it does erase your userdata (although for something the files still remain on the SD card (like music). In addition in you want the official Froyo release you will have to use ODIN to flash back.

So, I just want to clear things up for myself.
Right now, I am running Eugene's ROM.
I will flash back to stock JF6
I can download the Cog 2.2 BETA6.zip file. Put it on my SD card and flash it using Clockwork.
If I want to flash back to JF6, I can use Odin to that.
Does all that seem right or is there more to it?
I did read the guide and it is excellent. I am just hesistant here, so just wanted some confirmation.
Thank you for your awesome work.

You use ODIN to get back to stock 2.1. Then follow the guide to the beginning. A summary of the steps to get cognition is:
Flash to 2.1 Eclar
Root the 2.1
Flash the zip file with clockwork

And skip JH7 altogether? Cognition contains the JH7 "fixes"?

That is what my understanding. I did this with an un modded captivate. I am pretty sure that was JH6. If you have a PC you can always just use his ODIN flash to install it and that is that. But I have a Mac so I made my guide Mac friendly.

pretty decent guide

Great Guide, Works Awesome!
Samsung Captivate

Install went smooth as can be. I had to install the drivers, as told by the guide, but I think you may have missed a step?
Under "Installing Froyo --> Prepare" you may want to add a note that the phone has to be in Mass Storage mode to transfer the ZIP. Not sure if this is always true, but I did have to do that on my own (it was not showing the phone when it was sitting in debugging mode.)
I will be sending you a $5 donation. Really wish I could send more, but simply cannot. I am hoping others are doing the same, as this guide is awesome...
I did have one question about the 2.2 update. I heard somewhere that this would fix the GPS issue, however, I am experiencing the same issues with connectivity. Does anybody know if Samsung/AT&T plan on fixing this?
Again, thanks!

I think asking for a donation for copy & pasting postings into a PDF is cheap.
But I suppose you can't blame a guy for trying to skim some money off what should be going to the actual cooks.

If you look @ the date on the OP (Opening Post) then you'll see where your issue is.
This is an older thread. So the file no longer available.
Although I do commend you for ACTUALLY LOOKING for a tutorial thread and not opening a new topic.
The steps will all still work though. You can get the most recent version of Cognition (3.04 i think) in the link in my Sig
Happy Flashing!

thanks marzo, i found it. i just finished flashing and now im waiting for it to boot up with FROYO!

Not a problem... And it really is a Rearity that a person actually searches for answers around here.
Better to *BUMP* an old thread then open YET another.
Be careful though.. This is a very addictive habbit that your forming!

Can you update the guide for theh persons with the update to froyo 2.2 from AT&T.
Thanks.

Thank You!!
Thank you very much for this it was just what I was searching for!

[Q] Help with my Samsung Captivate..

The last Android phone I rooted was the HTC Hero... I need help rooting and installing a rom and unlocking my Samsung Captivate (Not necessarily install a rom). My main concern is 1. I want to unlock & 2. Allow to install apps from unknown sources (which from what I understand AT&T blocks). Should I stick with the stock 2.1 that came with the phone or should I use a different rom? I am somewhat new but all I need is someone to point in the right direction and I can figure out the rest myself. I am also wondering if I need to use the internal memory or should I use another microSD card... Like I said before... unlocking and allowing to install from unknown sources is my main concern..

It's your decision to stay with 2.1 or use a custom leaked 2.2 ROM. The ROM's are really good with what the Dev's are working with. You don't need to use an external sd card but it is worth having for extra room.

Am I better off going with 2.2? Is it stable? Someone told me about the Serendipity Rom.. Which rom would you recommend that is 2.2?

The 2.2 ROM's are stable. I won't recommend a ROM though because each phone reacts differently. Serendipity is a good ROM and I am using it now, but you would be able to use pretty much any of the 2.2 ROM's and be happy. Mostly if you just want a ROM made by a dev you are really looking at the theme of the ROM. Check the threads in the dev section and read up on each one.
Try looking over the stickies and read the Wiki. Doing a search before posting is always appreciated, as well.

No need to get cranky.... No one is twisting ur arm to answer my question..
We get cranky when people expect answers to questions that are easily answered by looking over the forum and/or doing a search, much like all of your questions.
Anyway................
I reach the step where I do the Odin3 1-CLick Downloader but the program doesnt seem to see the phone. Any idea why????
P.S. I did my research but couldnt find an answer.

Yes & Yes
I downloaded the 1.3 version and the 1.0 version of ODIN3 but the 1.0 version was a 275MB file..
After you install the drivers, you put your phone in download mode
Then you open odin (whichever one you want to use, I normally use 1-click)
Then you plug in your phone and it should recognize it; if it doesnt, then somethings wrong with your drivers--reinstall them
if you start it, but it hangs at reading pit file (or some variation) then unplug some USB accessories and try again. (sometimes it takes me up to 4-5 tries before it begins to flash)
And I'm not getting cranky, I'm merely stating what I'm observing.
I barely ask questions on the forum because I can normally find what I'm looking for if I were just to read. Don't get me wrong, I want to be helpful; But when the information is all gathered in a few clicks, I don't see why some people can't find the most basic answers.

[Q] it is possible to...

Sorry, I'm new to this so sorry if this seems dumb.
So i bought the phone from rogers and immediately updated to froyo 2.2 official release by rogers/samsung.
I read about all the hype online about rooting and custom roms so i decided to give it a shot.
I used the superoneclick method to root my phone and it was successful.
I then used "rom manager - clockworkmod" and created a restore file before i did any flashing to my phone.
after creating a backup, i went on and flashed to the cognition 3.04.
Now my question is. Am i ever able to get my phone back to its original rom, kernel, and modem? the reason i want to know is because i might need to get my phone replaced due to some technical issues with the phone.
Also, does the backup of my phone after rooting play a part in any of this? if so, how?
Im sorry if there is already a post like this one. Its just that i couldn't find the answer through all the hundreds of pages of threads and replies, so I thought it would be easier to post a here with my specific question. Thanks.

danny

Do I not use that link in general, or just not to use the firmware given at the bottom? the steps are correct though, no?
also from my searching.
i can put my phone back to my backup point (just after rooting) through clockworkmod. Woud this change my rom back to stock from? how about kernel and modem and all that? would that all get reversed back to my backup point? meaning it will basically be a stock phone. But I think also read somewhere that my kernel and modem does not get changed back to rogers original one. is there a way to do it?
I then found this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846501
that says i need the original rogers rom for the captivate by the links there no longer work for download. Also on that thread, it was mentioned that the AT&T logo will still come up on startup, which would not be a good idea if i had to send my phone in for warrenty.
I then looked at : http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-I896
Here it tells me to flash to a i9000 before i reflash to a rogers firmware in order to remove the at&t logo. it also provides me with a link for the " Official Rogers Stock ROM ", but according to somebody on the first link i posted here, it isnt the "official rom"
Any ideas?
This is where I got the stock 2.2 file from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905042.
Edit: I have flashed a bunch of times and have never got stuck with the AT&T startup after flashing back to stock with the odin file.

Thanks. So im assuming now that the only time my kernel and modem wont go back to stock is when i flash with CWM. correct?
I haven't tried using the CWM file in that link so I'm not sure if it contains the kernel and modem. As far as custom roms go most if not all come packaged with the kernel and modem of choice.
So.. When I do a "master clear" from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989...
Would everything be wiped? I read somewhere that when you do a "wipe" from your settings it only clears user settings or something. What would a "wipe"
from the recovery menu do?
I flashed to a different rom today thinking it will help my battery issue. When i am flashing from one rom to the next, i do a restore back to my backup before i flash to a new rom. Is this the correct method? or am i supposed to wipe beforehand? The reason i ask is because this is my 2nd rom and my battery issue still seems to be there. I tried other methods of fixing hte battery but nothign seems to work. When i looked into root explorer, i see that there are a lot more files now everywhere, than when i first started. would some of them be from my previous rom? if so how do i remove them?

[Q] stable ICS and help un F-ing my phone please

ok, here goes. i saw a video on youtube
(i'm a new member, so i'm replacing this link. the video is "Root & Install Ice Cream Sandwich On The Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant No Computer Needed" by eddie1west)
it seemed so easy, right? i'm looking for the most stable Tmobile Vibrant ICS. Before i do that, now i have to un-junk my phone. i tried to follow that guy's instructions to put the new OS on my vibrant, but i messed something up along the way. Then i realized when he shows his phone's files, they have a different name and/or version than the links he provides. that may have had something to do with it, but it could also be that he started from stock in january, and i started from gingerbread in july....
well i put some update.zip file in the root (but was never shown when or if it needs removed), then finally got the phone rooted (but when i held all 3 buttons i never got the BLUE menu like he did. mine was RED until i applied his update.zip and then it was only GREEN until i rebooted. it always starts at RED), then installed his gingerbread over mine, then tried to load his link to ICSv13 (even though the one he used was v10), but all i got was a never ending boot. i thought maybe i needed to start from where he did, so i watched his other video (LINK REPLACED: "How To Go Back To Stock Eclair On Your Samsung Galaxy S With Odin 1.3" by eddie1west) and tried to start all over (but his download links didn't work and i had to find all the files singly). So, using odin v1.85 (but he used v1.3), i only ended up getting froyo (not eclair) and NO google apps icon....! Sigh
then it seemed like every link i clicked to try to fix my issues just brought me to this website. so i'm thinking you all must know your shhhhhhhtuff! i've read through so many forum pages like the "enable a lagfix"/"disable a lagfix" pages, the "flash with 2 files"/"flash with 3 and check a box" pages, sometimes Odin has PDA as the second button and sometimes it's third, some that say to flash without that update.zip file (so delete, flash, then put it there? then leave it?). and to top it all off, most answers take me to an older page (and program or file versions have changed or have updates since then....all newer stuff still compatible with each other?) AND a lot of the links i've clicked on are broken and i have to hope the file i find is the same as the instruction writer intended. (i guess if a file size was indicated, i could compare them kb for kb...)
about an hour ago, i was going to reflash some OS that kind of worked, then try to disable those 2 voodoo commands some page said to enable, then take the update.zip out, then try everything all over again when i got the message "CONVERT PARTITION, SYSTEM NOT AVAILABLE, CONVERT PARTITION, SYSTEM NOT AVAILABLE"!
THEN i thought.....HANG ON! JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE A P3N1S DOESN'T MEAN THERE ARE LAWS AGAINST STOPPING AND ASKING FOR DIRECTIONS!!!! LOL!
So I stopped messing with the phone. From where i am right now, how do i get to a stable version of ICS? Will someone please give me a step-by-step list on what to do now? And can the list include file links that aren't broken (or a single zip file with everything in it would be like hitting the lottery!) and things i can look for to know i'm on the right track at the 1/3 mark and 2/3 mark possibly?
and could i please get a little forgiveness for being so long-winded when i get frustrated? and a tissue? and something to hit? (well..while i'm begging...can i get a large stuffed-crust meat-lover's and some diet dew too?) i may have found the reason that so many people use drugs! lol!
FYI, i'm on T-mobile using a T959V
FOLLOW UP-----
I moved this question here because I was just informed that the Vibrant is NOT the name of the Galaxy S 4G!
So what ur saying is the update.zip works on the t959v? And gives you root......I had a good feeling it would.
But anyhow you should go to the dev tab here in this forum and dl gremlin remover (one click)! and use that to get u back to stock.
We do not have a stable ics.
We are just now getting cm9 ics but you've got to understand its not perfect yet.....stick with gb for awhile and learn how this phone functions.
And don't worry...like the vibrant .....this phone is in my findings.....unbrickable

That is quite correct. They are different animals. If the gremlin remover doesn't help or get you where you need to go, I'd suggest using The T959V Heimdall One-Click Collection. Following the instructions there will get you back to a booting, stock Gingerbread ROM. From there you can go find ROM/ROMS of your liking (we have great developers) and give it/them a go.
Let us know if you need help.
well i meant the MOST stable Android 4 (aka cm9? ice cream)... or, for that matter, Android 3 (aka cm8? french silk pie? twinkie? zinger? lol! yum.....) would work too...
ok, i'll go find that program this afternoon/evening and fix the phone. (i just have to remember not to get that prog wet or feed it after midnight....)
now that i feel like an accidental guinea pig because i found you an answer you didn't know, then do you want me to test the compatibility of anything else out on it before i fix it? post your working links and i'll report back.
also, thanks for the gremlin help.
@stephen_w
is there an Odin one-click zip dealy thingy (and yes, that IS the technical term )
Lol I'm good I use to have the vibrant and just had a feeling this phone could have been rooted without hooking up to a comp.
Gremlin remover is an an Odin one click in itself.

I need a whole lot more information to help you out.
1) What was the EXACT error you got.
2) Did you actually fxz to 2.3.6, before attempting to apply the blur zip file?
3) Did you try and root or restore anything before trying to apply the blur zip file, including signing into goolge?
4) Did you install ANY CWM bootstrap or the like, before trying to apply the blur zip file?
I would fxz to 2.3.6 and try again to apply the Blur zip file, and this time, please capture the error message with as much detail as possible, so that I know what to tell you to do next. Also next time please post this in my leak #1 thread, instead of a new one, thanks.

Yeah you can not just do a factory reset. You HAVE to fxz back to 2.3.6 from scratch, even if you are already on 2.3.6. Go grab the 2.3.6 fxz and flash that with RSD lite, then try again. It is real important that you flash the fxz and the do nothing, not even sign into google, or install ANYTHING, before trying to update with the zip file. I see that your build.prop was the issue in your error, that tells me you did not fxz, and you MUST do that.
Oh and By the way you can get the 2.3.6 FXZ from here:

And this is the file you want, if you are on AT&T:

Yeah you can not just do a factory reset. You HAVE to fxz back to 2.3.6 from scratch, even if you are already on 2.3.6. Go grab the 2.3.6 fxz and flash that with RSD lite, then try again. It is real important that you flash the fxz and the do nothing, not even sign into google, or install ANYTHING, before trying to update with the zip file. I see that your build.prop was the issue in your error, that tells me you did not fxz, and you MUST do that.
Oh and By the way you can get the 2.3.6 FXZ from here:
http://sbf.droid-developers.org/edison/list.php
And this is the file you want, if you are on AT&T:

Thank you so much, if you don't mind, I will update you when I finish doing what you recommended.
Ok, now I did use the RSD lite to go back to the fxz 2.3.6. All the process went will and I got the PASS under the status. When the device started I notice that I am in ICE not 2.3.6!! so do I have to do the next step in this thread ??

No. You are on ICS now the same version as the ota, which by the way is no longer off limits sine we have an ICS fxz, as you just witnessed. You can use the root from thread though, if you want root.

Thank you soooo much for your kind help and your time as well.
Do any of the sr contributors ever read what they post in NOOB sections or procedures
I see many SR responders that I can guess just live and make a living off of modifying and changing android system. Problem is that unless you do things everyday. Many of the abbreviations and shortening of terms is the cause of many of the questions us part time modify-er of phones ask.
But unless you do it everyday. Simple for many but many tasks have to be reviewed and gone over again and re-read. Many modify and then only do it again when they get tired or have a new phone. Many of us have some of the same desires and likes but don't have the time or inclination to do it fulltime or live for programming and Modifying. Were users. We don't like the stock bloats and addons that we get with stock phones.
Simple example is going from 2.3.6 operating version to 4.04. Have a thread [HOW TO] get your AT&T phone onto ICS Leak #1 - Process Updated 11/11/2012.
Simple questions such as ON GB or figuring out if my phone modifying OR I have put Leak 1 or 2 on my phone. or ICS OTA. just figuring out what a leak meant was a task.
With my Atrix2 I went from 2.3.5 to root to 2.3.6 with a modified ROM. So back tracking and knowing if I'm in ICS of 2.3.6 or a modified version . That won't work. By reading it seems to be that to go to 4.04 you need to be in stock ATT FXZ by using the RSD lite. Then get the new 4.04 over the air (OTA)
Then you have a stock 4.04 . You then can go do the root zip. Then load titimium backup and reload all of your apps and settings.
But read how your write your procedures. Probably get half as many questions if most of the links work. Example try to find RSD Lite 6.0 link.
You then add into all of this mix different phones, MFG's. etc. Example Atrix is almost in 3 different versions.
Also all the crap that is added to the end of post. Half the time there is more adds and quips and comments that get added and added to each response. That slows the reading from what is important to glaze over at the added 4 inches of not need to know.
Not a pretty picture. Sure many don't read more then one or two links. But doesn't help when you send a read and you'll find the answer. Just either answer or don't respond.
How you abbreviate the answer is only going to make part timers ask the same question time after time. It's nice sharing information. But just make a SR section if you don't want us to ask questions. That have been asked - and asked-

Where did this come from? And what did this have to do with the OP's question?
You just screwed yourself by doing to the OP what you claimed is an issue with:

Now if you have something to post to help the OP, even though this has been solved, then spit it out. If you have a question then ask it, otherwise go post elsewhere, as this post was utter crap and disrespectful to all of the people in the Atrix2 forum.
--EDIT--
Yeah I get one thing you were complaining about was peoples signatures, but too bad. People have every right to put whatever they want in their signature, and it does not need to have anything to do with anything, and sure does not need to even be related to android. I am guessing that your work e-mail signature is boring and dry and just has your name and title... Mine at work actually lists all my certifications in binary, so... Again if you do not like it, go someplace else.
Yeah I am being harsh, but for your 5th post total and, looking at the other junk you have posted you are not off to a good start. Stop whining and grow up, and read, read, and oh yeah read EVERYTHING again, you might actually learn something. If you do not understand an acronym, then ask what that means. I would rather have someone ask what is an FXZ or what is RSD lite and how do I get it, than having someone complain about it, in the insulting way that you have.
Oh and one last thing, ALL of us in here do this for free in our free time, and are not "pros" as you so insinuated, so you might also think about that the next time you post.

[Q] i am beyond 'newbie dot com', & so totally lost... :(

So I rooted my at&t infuse. I now owned it for just over a year, so the warranty on it is out. Here's what I'm so unsure of...
Googling til the cows came home, I thought I discovered that the official gingerbread update brought me to uclb3 2.3.6 or some such thing. I had the ulk2 or something? The unofficial leak back in Feb. Anyhow, found a way to root .6 on youtube. Followed along the whole way, pausing, rewinding, playing and pausing again. The guy on the video was using 'odin'. Finally, (long story short and after my heart started beating again), my screen said 'pass' just like his did and my phone rebooted. (thats when my heart started beating again, lol). So I was googling again, just to see what 'flashing roms' meant. I even had to look up 'rom'. All I wanted a rooted phone for was to get rid of those apps that at&t installed on my phone and I can't uninstall. Which I accomplished. But googling flashing a rom, somehow I stumbled upon another youtube video. This one was of some guy saying if you're not a rogers infuse owner, turn the video off now. So I watched. And he used 'odin'.
Did I root it right?
The only "problems" I'm having with my phone is with the wifi. When I click on fb, it says connection lost. I have to turn on data to use it. But if I click on the web icon, or play store, I can connect. Is it a root issue, or facebook update issue?
Baby steps with me now! I need the 'rosetta stone' version of your reply, haha! This is totally foreign territory for me!
Whether you are rooted or not really depends on what package you flashed with Odin.
On 2.3.6, to root you need to flash a custom kernel, such as entropy's dd kernel.
I suggest you take a look at the super iset thread stickied on the dev thread. You will find everything you need there.
also search on the q&a and general sections.. You should find many threads with detailed instructions
It may be helpful if you go back to the beginning of the Q/A section and read up on the earlier thread and work your way forward. It will familiarize you with the "lingo"
You can also start at the, "How To" thread for some basic info. That thread is pack with lots of info. You may need to read it several times to understand.

Thank you so much for taking the time - so if I understand correctly, *OFOURSE* I did it wrong. Time for a new phone! Really, as upset and lost as I am, I appreciate your reply.

Thanks for the reply, but if I read it for the next YEAR, I won't understand. All I needed, which you and the previous poster gave to me, was a straight answer - "No, you didn't do it right". I really appreciate that you took the time, and hopefully after Christmas and New Years, I'll have time to skim through!
Thanks for your time!
(is there anyway to delete this thread now?)
It's super easy. With a pc install kies...then run qkster's one click. Directions here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1524081
Then run entropys the same way. From same post.
Once you have recovery flash anything you want...
If you flash cm9, and it boots up in rainbows , start these directions over but flash qkster's oneclick twice. Second time have bootloaders checked.
Always flash cm10 only after cm9 or cm10 is on. (never cm7 to cm10)Follow instructions and ask questions in step form. Say "ok so I flashed this here, how do I flash this"
And always flash gaps after you flash your custom rom. (even just upgrades reflash gapps)
Newbie flashing
If I can add a little, you could use Odin. After you install Kies (for the drivers) look for GTG's Unbrick. Flash it. Boot it up.
Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1613523
Then load that into Odin. Flash it. You can connect your phone, turn on usb, then look in my computer. You will find your phone "drives" there. Add a rom you downloaded, Boot into recovery, do a reset/dalvik/clean and install zip from sd card. Choose the new zip, and hit the power button to start the rom installation. Check out Youtube. They all basically install the same way.Hope it helps. Learn to use the unbricking stuff they have made, and thank them.
